Cup finals contest(s) for Boneheads?

What do you think?

I still have two copies of John Halligan’s book “100 Ranger Greats” … I think I do, anyway. I’ll check. If so, those will be the prizes.

I’m thinking of having two separate contests.

I have two ideas rattling around my brain, and I’m just trying to come up with a way to present them. Are youse all in?

Details to follow Thursday and Friday. Game 1 Saturday.

In the meantime, I have to go introduce Mr. Nike Sasquatch to Mr. Titleist this morning. I am really taking today completely off!! I’ll check in tonight. If the Rangers make any more earth-shattering trades you guys can take care of it yourselves.

Watching “Everybody Loves Raymond” during Yankees rain delay last night. It’s Ray’s wedding day. He’s in his tux. His uncle walks in and says to Ray, “You look like a bus stop toilet.” I dunno. It cracked me up.

Yesterday was the anniversary of The Guarantee game … And, The Captain never said the word “guarantee.” But he did predict victory, and you know the rest. Which means tomorrow is not only Mrs. Carp’s 26th birthday, but it is also the anniversary of “Matteau, Matteau, Matteau!”

Speaking of captains … what do you think of the Flyers’ captain, you know, compared to some other captain we might occasionally discuss here?

Good morning, carp! 7am post? This place is reallly getting a little weird.

  2. I think both players(Drury and Briere) were better when they were sharing the captaincy in Buffalo. Drury seems to be a better “Captain”, whatever that means, but Briere is the better signing on July 1 based on money and production.

One thing you can say about Drury is he’s been relatively healthy while he’s been in NY. The same can’t be said for Briere in Philly.

  3. True fans bleed RW&B on

However, Such healthiness kept AA from staying in the nhl for a year and basically destroyed the offensive production of any winger paired with drury over the past 3 years.
The only good thing about drury (and his contract) is that they are closer to leaving and more than 50% paid.

  4. Good morning, boneheads!
What do we really think about Flyers captain? Especially since we could have him during that pathetic draft day? Even if I tried to use all the cover words we came up with on the blog I would still get banned.

    Have fun today, Carp!

The book is awesome, Mike. I think it’s a beautiful piece for any hockey enthusiast to have, but for Rangers fans it has a ton of sentimental value. The top 10 players include the ’94 cup core (Leetch, Richter, Messier), so it’s big for my generation. However, the top-10 also include guys like Andy Bathgate (who I only know as the answer to every other MSG trivia question) and Ratelle; players I should know more about, but as a young’n don’t really know where to get that information. The book is a great place.

  6. ilb, that one draft was a mess and set us back bigtime. plus our 07 pick wasnt even healthy enough to play teh game!! but jessiman had no excuse. we needed a power forward but how can we get so unlucky!! and of course the other pick from that draft plays on our 4th line!! and hes not gonna get any better!! lol . but ever since slats doesnt do the drafting anymore weve been getting much better picks. hopefully kreider becomes a star. hes big, fast, and is looking like at least a 2nd liner. were movin on up!! no more 3rd liners.

  7. yea i grew up with mess n gravy. leetch, gartner, beezer, richter, erixon, ogrodnick, kocur, domi, nemchinov, kisio, patrick, sandstrom, granato, ridley, nicholls, etc… late 80’s i was old enough to like the game but early 90’s i was really starting to get into it. at the time, i said, wow im so happy we won the cup. i was 13 then and i said to my dad, “thank god we finally won”! as if id been waiting 30 even 40 years like older fans. but yea i do love the history of the rangers but dont get to hear about except for here. carps stories and fran, onecup, and others are great to listen to. of course i know some history but mostly what i see on msg, and they show way too much 94 stuff even though it is the greatest time in rangers history.

  8. Agree Mike, we can put out some of the 3rd liners we have on ebay auction lol.

I think Stepan is going to be good too. That’s one of the reasons we should not be getting a lengthy, debilitating contract for a center at the moment (or as wicky says, centre)

  9. CTBlueshirt on

Is this the same Richards that was leading the Flyers locker room in the wrong direction when they seemed to be melting down and having spats with the media? The same captain who’s authority was being undermined by Pronger?

Goes to show you how much winning changes the perception of players. In the hypothetical exercise of “who would you chose to build a franchise around?” Richards ranks somewhere in the top 30, but not 10 and certainly not top 5. But if the Flyers manage to shock the world and win the Cup (gag) his stock skyrockets.

Signature play though on that SHG, I can’t deny that Richards is a great PK guy. I wouldn’t mind Dubinsky developing into a Richards-lite type player, 50-60 points a year and can play in all situations.

  10. yes ilb. i really like our youth movement we have goin on right now. as bad as sather has been, he didnt trade any young prospects and i gotta be happy about that. who knows, what if we got parise in 03? slats prob wouldve traded him anyway back then. lol. but yea, weve done well the past few years and we’ll be getting the highest pick since 04 in this draft. but if prospal isnt resigned, then we have duby, artie and EC is resigned. drury is 3rd line for sure, but duby and artie? idk. duby is not a 1st liner. artie could be one day. id still like to see us get someone to center gabby. just dump redden. we could get a guy for about 4-4.5 range to at least make that top line something to give st louis and atlanta something to think about! ;)

  11. Mike, we need a first line center, period. But not Vinny with his contract. If they can send a reasonable package for Richards, I’d do it. Plekanec is another option. Marleau I think will want a big, long contract. Besides, he is not a typical set up center, but he could work.

  12. And This One Will Last A Lifetime on

I see very little former Rangers personnel in the finals this year.
Chicago…Kim Johnsson who I guess has been hurt all year
Philidelphia…Betts and asst coach Paddock ?

Is that all there is ?

  13. TheREALMikeyNJ on

    To Hell with Richards

Yeah he’s good but he’s a dirty piece of Carcillo, and gives more cheap head shots than I’ve ever seen by any other captain

Karma is a biatch and it will come back to him.
Really hope Big Buff Lays him out, that would be some poetic jsutice right there

At least you can resepect Drury, I have zero Respect for that piece of Carcillo, or any of the philthy Flyers

Have fun losing the cup, hahahah

  14. Mike Richards is not that different to the Drury of a year ago. Look at his regular season stats, 62 pts – he’s just turned it up a notch in the playoffs. Briere and Giroux (and Leighton) have been the biggest surprises on that roster for me.

I still think Chicago will steamroller them in 5 games, they are so good at playing different ways when the time requires it and Philly can’t have Pronger play a full 60 minutes and i think the other 5 d-men will be exposed by Chicago’s speed and skill.

  15. ZzZz NYR ZzZz "I feel a draft comming in!!! " … says Greg L. on

Carp , That bookie contest…IM IN!!! This time im gonna win. No messiering around either by me. Ill be staying tuned for the details so make’em juicey!!!

Morning all!!! The Mikes and Ilb ,you too lifetime and truefans.

The Flyers making it to the cup shows what garbage teams can when they actually make it to the playoffs. No fooling anyone , the Flyers odds were like 26 -1 and now it seems destiny is in there favor.

    Wanna bet?

    * With the odds set at +1600 a $100 bet on the Philadelphia Flyers to win the Stanley Cup would pay out $1700 dollars. This is a risky bet, however very profitable if the Flyers can stay out of the box and get consistent scoring from their top two lines. Betting on Philadelphia to win the Stanley Cup would be a lot of fun to watch if they do well.

  16. ZzZz NYR ZzZz "I feel a draft comming in!!! " … says Greg L. on

Flyers are scum but Carsillyocarp is a decent player when he doesnt act like an idiot. Pronger is solid and old ,slow and not as nasty but gets the job done. Simon Gagner is a still a sniper but the real beast is Mike Richards . He is as solid as they come. I hate all the Flyers but I know a great player when I see one. Mike Richards needs to be covered at all times. I hated him on the ice when he played us Rangers. Richards is a handfull and he is pritty determined. He could win the conn smythe , you heard it here first …

  17. If the Flyers win I think Richards gets the Smythe. Otherwise unless he completely sleepwalks through the Finals, I think Toews gets it.

Has Richards caused some damage to players in his career? Yes, of course Booth and Krejci come to mind. But lest we forget that Messier delivered more than his fair share of questionable hits during his career.

  18. Good morning all! Maybe if it paid out $1.7 mil I’d choke and place that bet. but no way. Carp, I’m not feeling the love today :)

Jim Cerny is claiming that the Rangers have another announcement to make, regarding a player personnel move

  20. G’morning all!

Gonna be 91 here upstate. Feels like summer is here and I’m not about to complain.

Richards and Toews head-to-head? I give the edge to Toews, who is becoming one of my favorite players in the league.

  21. Toews has been great, but are we forgetting how many GWGs Buff scored so far?

    Gravey- are you carcilloing us?

  22. TheREALMikeyNJ on

Probably gonna be the Zuccarello signing

But Lets Hope its Redden Retiring !!!

  23. Gravey – please elaborate. Was this on Twitter (which my work network blocks aarrrggh!)?

  24. TheREALMikeyNJ on

Adn thats true, the Hawks can win in so many different ways, and Philly just cant.

Hawks in 4 or 5 and I’ll be laughing in Philly’s face!!

  25. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

I’m pretty sure Philly gets the last laugh, even without the cup. Montreal eliminated Caps and Pitts (did the dirty work), and then rolled over and played dead against Philly. Overall, a Stanley Cup finals ticket purchased by a game 82 OT circus act, and thus they really are laughing all the way to the bank (city revenue, management and players won’t be changed significantly, and the fans still having hockey to watch). Oy!

    1. Lots of guesses on #NYR announcement today; most of you guessing/hoping a Redden move, others speculating on a signing of a European star…

  27. Gravey - Formerly known as Jor71 on

    Official NY Rangers tweet:

Stay Tuned for Announcement by #NYR Later Today!

  28. If IT Redden related, it’ll be like Christmas, Hanukkah and everyone’s birthday all rolled into one.

  29. LMAO at Jim! That’s his latest:

My favorite guess of yours: Cerny being promoted to President/GM of #NYR! I like the way you think!! half a minute ago via web

  30. “If IT Redden related,”

Jeez, way for me to forgot the English language, lol. Should be ‘If it IS Redden related…”

  31. Thanks Gravey.

I pray for a Redden announcement, but no doubt it will be something like the predicted MZA signing or maybe a Staal contract signing?

  32. Or maybe it’s that Darth is stepping down. That would be just as sweet as Redden going bye-bye.

  33. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

Anyone savvy with the cap, players association, and UFA movement know if the Rangers could/would release/demote Redden before July 1?

  34. TheREALMikeyNJ on

    No truefan totally disagree

Whats worse getting bounced in the first round/not makng the playoffs, or getting all the way to the finals and losing

Screw Philly and there disugsting retarded ignorant fans

  35. I dont think he can be demoted till end of training camp, it was discussed last week some time. If its about Redden for the moment trade or retirement would be the only subjects, hence its probably something like MZA signing.

  36. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

I agree with the last part… but if i had the choice of the Rangers losing in the cup finals or making 9th place on a lost circus show in the OT of game 82, I choose the loss in the Finals. It’s more hockey, a sign of a better team, and offers a very positive outlook for the next season.

You’re saying you would prefer this year’s finish? That means in the past 15 years, you’d prefer 15 9th place finishes!! Yikes.

  37. True fans-no, he remains under contract. They can not demote him until after the end of training camp. They are stock with his contract and full cap hit through the summer. He can retire any time, of course.

  38. Gravey - Formerly known as Jor71 on

here you go from NYR official tweet

#NYR sign free agent Mats Zuccarello Aasen; Mats, 22, was Swedish Elite League’s top scorer and MVP with 64 points in 55 games this year

  39. not for nothing ive been waiting to hear this since the end of march. im glad it finally happened.

  40. Tiki Barbarr on

    NYR Announcement

New York Ranger President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today and Valeri Kamensky will rejoin the Rangers as the power forward they have been seeking.

  41. What do I think of Mike Richards? He’s a punk, he cheapshots with intent to injure, and he’s a Flyer. And I think that if in June of 2003 Glen Sather steps up to the podium and drafts Mike Richards instead of Hugh Jessiman, we are anointing the guy the next Messier and Ranger history over the last 4 years is an entirely different beast, and probably for the better. In fact, I would say that more than anything else that Sather has done over the last 7 or so years, it is this one move, not just taking the one guy in the draft who never made it, but specifically failing to draft either Parise or Richards (both of whom were still available), that could have had the most upside and the most beneficial impact on the franchise this decade. People always bemoan passing on Parise but passing on Richards was a worse move. That one move.

The guy plays his heart out, scores clutch goals, is a leader and loves the physical game. By definition he is not a Ranger, but I wish Sather had made him one.

  42. I’m excited! MZA!! I think he’ll be good. Look at the Habs. They just had too many smurfs and that hurt them.

  43. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

Why not push it to something really crazy?

‘Former Ranger Ron Duguay nearly left his Manhattan apt this morning after using just 5 of his 7 hair products. On the way out, he also considered closing the top button on his dress shirt. You heard it here first.’ (e5)

  44. Reginald Dunlop on

would take Richards in a heartbeat………that there is a real captain

  45. When I saw MZA playing in the Olympics, I said that I wished the Rangers would get him. Now they did! It’s a good day in NY!!!

  46. tr – I did but still concerned that over the course of the entire NHL season he won’t be able to hold up. Hope I’m wrong would love for him to be the next St. Louis.

  47. kevin – him scoring as much as he did along w/ the olympics (nhl size rink playing w/ nhl players) im not too concerned. he eludes the defense w/ ease.

i do get what youre saying w/ more games and wouldnt be shocked if from time to time he is scratched.

adamn z. – he plays RW but ive watched him take a number of face-offs and he usually wins because he gets a lot lower than the other player, lol.

  48. I’d still take Parise over Richards, but, yes, let’s be honest- we would love him in NY.

MZA will be good. He is here to provide a solid secondary scoring. He is fast and shifty. He is feisty and has an excellent scoring touch. Any small player would have issues dealing with huge crease clearing D-men. But remember, the opposing team will have to choose who is going to defend against Gaborik and who is defending MZA. If he is used properly and carefully by Torts, we just may have ourselves a new offensive threat. For not much money. And if he doesn’t work out- it’s a two-way contract. Not a big head-scratcher here.

  49. MZA and Gabby on the same PP unit could be mighty interesting. With their speed and MDZ threading both of them passes, it gives the PP a whole other dimension.

  50. LMAO, TR..I guess he’s been reading RR for awhile. He forgot to mention it’s a two-way deal, that’s the agreement for international players of his age.

  51. ilb
im trying to find my comments on here around the end of march to beginning of april. i said something like 2yr/825-875,000. its really the bonuses.

so now that this has come to pass lets all talk about sondre olden…

  52. The small commitment of years and $ along with it being a two-way deal obviously makes this a low risk move for the Rangers.

  53. Leatherneckinlv on

    Hello Carp,
I have been a long time Ranger fan, lets just say Brad Park used to be one of my favorite point is this through thick or thin this is our team, don’t make references towards Drury, he brings a lot more to the plate than just scoring. He is a good Captain, and we do not see what goes on behind the closed doors. Now will you please start lobbying for the Rangers to draft Dylan McIlrath, Derek Forbort or Jon Merrill. Riley Sheahan will drop into the second round. We get 2 of those 4 in the draft and it will be an awesome draft

  54. one thing is for certain. you can sharpie marker in MZA for 3rd shooter in the shootout, lol.

for the people who have met me and know how i talk please insert “violation of TOS” word where it needs to go

***** can dangle w/ the best of em!
    MZA baby!!!

  55. m tired,. need a nap. but finally some good news in rangerland. now we just need to put him between shelly and boyle for protection. man i hope he doesnt get prucha’d every game. i mean prucha’d as in either getting scratched, or getting utterly destroyed by big hits like pru did. man that was brutal but funny as hell to see him get destroyed every game. i miss prucha!!! damnit glen get him back!we need him. if anything we need to get him back and send him out as a decoy so opposing players go after pru and leave mza alone!

  56. Ha, Ha you individuals are thinking, this dude will probably be leader til 2016, and I feel many of us ought to just get use to it, Hes Just as well Dammed Potent To quit.
