U.S. Men’s National Team Earns 4-0 Shutout of France at 2010 IIHF World Men’s Championship
COLOGNE, Germany – Nick Foligno (Buffalo, N.Y./Ottawa Senators) scored twice and Brandon Dubinsky (Anchorage, Alaska/New York Rangers) added a goal and two assists to help the U.S. Men’s National Team to a 4-0 win over France here this afternoon in its second of three relegation-round games at the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Championship.
“I thought we controlled the play for most of the game,” said U.S. Head Coach Scott Gordon. “In the end we got the job done and that’s what matters most.”
It was a scoreless first period. France had the game’s first shot on goal 62 seconds in, however, Team USA recorded the final nine shots on goal in the frame. T.J. Oshie (Warroad, Minn./St. Louis Blues/University of North Dakota) wheeled around the net and had his rising shot hit the cross bar 12:30 into the period for the best U.S. chance of the frame.
Foligno staked the Americans to a 1-0 lead at 4:49 of the second period. He took a nice feed from Jack Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Los Angeles Kings/Univ. of Michigan) at the left edge of the crease and scored on his own rebound. Dubinsky tallied the other goal of the middle stanza when he went from his forehand to backhand in front and beat Eddy Ferhi. David Moss (Livonia, Mich./Calgary Flames/Univ. of Michigan) and Mike Lundin (Apple Valley, Minn./Tampa Bay Lightning/Univ. of Maine) assisted on the play.
While on the power play, Oshie converted on the rebound of Keith Yandle’s (Boston, Mass./Phoenix Coyotes) shot just 1:36 into the third period to give the U.S. a 3-0 advantage. Foligno finished the scoring at 13:41 when came from the corner, spun to the middle and beat Ferhi from between the circles.
U.S. netminder Scott Clemmensen (Des Moines, Iowa/Florida Panthers/Boston College) turned aside all 10 shots he faced to earn the victory.
Team USA will conclude play in the 2010 IIHF World Men’s Championship Tuesday (May 18) with its third and final relegation-round game against Italy. Opening faceoff is set for 12:15 p.m. (6:15 a.m. ET). The game can be seen on a tape-delay on Universal Sports and at UniversalSports.com at 5:30 p.m. ET.
NOTES: Nick Foligno was named U.S. Player of the Game … The last time the U.S. recorded back-to-back shutouts in the World Championships was in 1967. The U.S. tied East Germany, 0-0, on March 25, before beating Finland, 2-0, on March 26. How about trading Gaborik for Malkin (again not sure if it would be straight up and who everyone thinks is better) but once we move Gaborik we now have a center and we go out and get a winger. Wanted to generate some talk so I want to know am I loosing it because I think this would be awesome.

That would be a very good trade. Gabby probably has 150-250 games of wear left on his career. Malkin definitely has more and is a guy who can take over the momentum of the game. It would give them a top center allow them to try for Kovy or a B-list winger this (and next off season). I like that trade if it’s straight up, but it’ll never happen.

I think we should just paint the versus logo in the bullseye… this way it’s sort of all encompassing. Cherry hates American hockey, and the versus tv crew is just awful.

Madrid has won La Liga not so long ago. And they at least are always in the hunt for the title. It’s their Champions League performance that has really slacked since their last one in 2002. I think we’d feel a lot better about the Rangers if they came close to RM’s performance.

Habs have a tendency to get right back in and dominate if opposing team let’s off the pressure.
I find myself not being able to root for either of those teams.
Prust and Shelly were scoring down the stretch , thats a good thing. We still had 4 olympians on the team for the stretch run and we just came up short… Delzotto is playing for team Canada right now . Our defense was bad but good enough to make it to the shoot out. We lost to a team we should have beat. Heart breaking still!!!

and there is my theory of the habs getting lucky!! very lucky to beat the caps and pens. halak!! if he is just good the rest of teh way this wont go 6 games. he has to be amazingly amazing for teh habs to go anywhere. and i cant see leighton playing even half as bad as fleury did in that series. honestly,i dont care who wins. just hope the hawks win in teh end. but i just cant se habs pulling it off. after what philly accomplished last series, i just dont think anything will shake them.
about he gabby trade, that would be an awesome deal for us, but then we need a winger. i know we could sign sharp or somebody. but i doubt even if the pens did that trade, we’d have to send a good prospect or 2 or maybe cally or a duby along. gabby still hasnt played a full 82 game season yet. but to think if we basically just flipped gomez for malkin in a years time, that would be incredible. i think truefans is right about gabbys longevity though. i really cant see him fulfilling his contract fully. if he does, i will be shocked. just look at his play from the beginning of teh season to the bitter end, he was obviously not even close to being teh same player. really sucks. just look at rozy. hes ben a shell of his former self even if he wasnt that great to begin with all after his surgery.
