OK, so Mike Richter caused some queasiness among Rangers fans when he appeared in Flyers owner Ed Snider’s box after Game 6 the other night.
And it sparked a little discussion on the Rangers’ goalie (the only one to win a Cup in the last 70 years, we might add). Some of that discussion was based on what Richter is doing, politically. Part of what he’s doing is saving the planet, which makes stopping Pavel Bure on a Cup finals penalty shot seem like blinking an eye.
Here’s a press release I received (you can go to the web site and read an op-ed piece Richter wrote a few months ago):

New Organization will promote health, clean energy and protecting the planet
NEW YORK (May 13, 2010) – Mike Richter, Stanley Cup and Olympic silver medal hockey goalie, today announced the launch of Athletes for a Healthy Planet, an organization of athletes dedicated to promoting a cleaner, healthier environment.
“Athletes recognize the special relationship between our health and the health of our planet,” said Richter. “We also know that clean energy and protecting the environment is about creating new jobs, building a stronger economy and protecting our national security.”
Richter is promoting the launch of Athletes for a Healthy Planet and its website, www.A4HP.org, this week on a nationwide radio tour.
“We are introducing Athletes for a Healthy Planet at an important moment,” Richter said. “This week U.S. senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) introduced new energy and climate legislation in the Senate. We will be working hard urging Americans to tell their Senators that our nation needs this critical legislation this year.
Mike Richter, a former National Hockey League (NHL) goalie, who helped lead the N.Y. Rangers to the Stanley Cup and the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team to a silver medal, is now a partner at Environmental Capital Partners, which invests in clean energy and new technology companies.
The impact of environmental change hit home for Richter, a father of three young sons, when he realized the frozen hockey ponds of his childhood had disappeared. Sports born in the outdoors now routinely are played indoors.
“No one has a greater stake in a cleaner, healthier planet than athletes,” said Richter. “But the state of our planet affects everyone, rich or poor, liberal or conservative. It is in everyone’s interest to understand the magnitude of the challenges and to work towards solutions. This is perhaps the defining issue of our time.”
Richter said Athletes for a Healthy Planet will capitalize on the celebrity status of athletes to serve as positive role models in “a nationwide effort to promote greater understanding of the direct relationship between the health of the planet and our health, economy, jobs, national security, social justice and quality of life.”

Now there’s an idea- swapping Redden and Rozival for Ollie. Combined, R2 could be just as non-effective as pitchers as they are as Dmen and just thought of Torts trying to deal with Ollie makes me giggle.

was getting a little crazy so i walked away from PC (at that point it was 5 unanswered goals). there was no sound on that link the whole game.

Lucky? Lucky that they decided to focus on neutralizing Crosby and Malkin and let the other players on the Pens try to beat them? Lucky that they have the leading goal scorer in the playoffs on their team? Yes the Pens flopped big time, but the Habs still had to play at the other end of the ice when they weren’t surrendering 40+ shots a game. They had a good game plan and more importantly they executed it well.

Agree, TR that Lundqvist will need more rest. However I think some of Torts reluctance to use the backup comes from the Rangers problems with scoring. If they had a team that could overcome the drop off in talent with more scoring I would think Torts would be more willing to use the #2 guy. In short, score more and that let’s Henrik get some rest.

yea they were lucky that halak played so damn good. and that fleury gave up some of teh worst goals ive ever seen. they had a better gameplan that suited them because they wouldve lost if they run and gunned with caps or pens. of course they executed that plan very well. im not saying they are a fluke. im just saying yea,as good as cammy has been for them scoring,without halak,no gameplan wouldve worked against either of teh 2 teams they beat. martin is a great coach and yea,he definitely out coached bylsma and boudreau. so,despite the skill level differences,the habs have definitely earned to be where tey are right now. they were very good at frustrating the 3 best players in teh league and i give them props for being able to neutralize them. just goes to show how far goaltending can take you in teh playoffs.
Safe is death sounds good in theory but you have to have forwards who can, you know, score and defensemen who can, you know, play defense for it to work. We lack both.

If your theory of “it’s 3-3 now, 0-3 down doesn’t matter anymore” then more teams would have come back over the course of history. Still think it’s too big a hill to climb.

GCBlue – It’s not a theory, it’s just basic probability.
Only two teams in history have come back from 3-0 down to win a series, but only five (I think) before now have even come back to tie it at 3-3. So, very crudely, that would suggest there’s a 40% chance of the team who was 3-0 down winning the series once it got to 3-3 (realistically, you’d expect it to converge towards 50% in the long run).
It’s winning the three games to make it 3-3 that has the low odds. The odds on Philly winning when it was 3-0 can’t be the same as they are now.
Blue, wouldnt THAT be appropriate. I love when shows have that disclaimer before a particular episode (JAG did it a few times) saying the story is not based on a real person, yet you KNOW it is.
Of course when it boils down to one last game you’d figure the odds at the beginning have nothing to do with it. Generally speaking, you’d figure it was 50-50 with some marginal weight given one way or the other for home ice, injuries, momentum, etc. Can’t explain it in terms of math, I just think if it was that balanced, the down 0-3 comeback to win in 7 would have happen much more often than it has.

I was hoping Boston would come out of the east from the start because they were the least of 8 evils.
If every game had a perfectly balanced 50/50 chance of either outcome, then yes, you’d expect more series to go from 3-0 to 3-3 than have in history. But teams usually go 3-0 up in the first place because they are much the better team – that’s why the circumstance itself is so rare.
But say getting from 3-0 to 3-3 is a 1-in-1000 event. It doesn’t mean winning Game 7 is a 1-in-1000 event. So far in NHL history, it’s been a 2-in-5 event and could be 3-in-6 after tonight.
For what it’s worth, I think the Flyers win will. The Niemi-Leighton/Backlund/Hextall/Richter goalie matchup in the Final has been destined from the start. If only to pacify the Trade Lundqvist Fraternity.
I don’t know. I think it’s the Sabres fan in me that just can’t root for Boston. I think I have to root for them to lose slightly more than I’m rooting for Philly to lose. But I’m not happy about any of it.
