So my usually reliable Game 2 stat was mediocre in the first round.
Through last year’s playoffs, when Game 2 winners won 11 of 15 series, here is the stat I got from Elias Sports Bureau last season and updated after the 2009 tournament: Game 2 winners have won 392 of 546 series, or 71.8 percent.
Well, in the first round of 2010, only five of eight Game 2 winners went on to win series. And of course, one of those which lost was Washington … blowing a 3-1 series lead.
So we move on to Game 2s in the conference semifinals. And though you never say never, and there never is an absolute must-win in the playoffs until you face elimination, this is as close as it gets for Montreal. To go down 2-0 to the defending champs, even for Cinderella, would be an enormous hole.
Today’s Game 2s:
Montreal-Pittsburgh, 2 p.m.
Detroit-San Jose, 8 p.m.
Have a happy Sunday.
