On to Game 2s

199

So my usually reliable Game 2 stat was mediocre in the first round.

Through last year’s playoffs, when Game 2 winners won 11 of 15 series, here is the stat I got from Elias Sports Bureau last season and updated after the 2009 tournament: Game 2 winners have won 392 of 546 series, or 71.8 percent.

Well, in the first round of 2010, only five of eight Game 2 winners went on to win series. And of course, one of those which lost was Washington … blowing a 3-1 series lead.

So we move on to Game 2s in the conference semifinals. And though you never say never, and there never is an absolute must-win in the playoffs until you face elimination, this is as close as it gets for Montreal. To go down 2-0 to the defending champs, even for Cinderella, would be an enormous hole.

Today’s Game 2s:
Montreal-Pittsburgh, 2 p.m.
Detroit-San Jose, 8 p.m.

Have a happy Sunday.

That Jordan Staal injury is bad news the longer these playoffs go.

They probably make it past Montreal and Boston/Philly but that’s going to kill them in the Finals against an elite team.

Darn Vancouver looked good last night, yes it’s only one game and Chicago has to be better but that team is running on all cylinders now and is dangerous.

  2. I’ve never seen the Hawks look this badly before. And the goal tending by Niemi was abominable…( I really despise that “butterfly” style. Here’s this mope sprawled out on his knees, while a Canuck circles around like a shark looking for a good place to bite, and this one leaves his entire upper net exposed. So the Canuck says “thank you kind sir” and deposits the 5th goal without a bit of interference from anyone wearing red. What a disappointment from a team that has been so much better than this.

You know – if the Hawks had Lundqvist, despite his B/F style
    they’d be well nigh unstoppable.

But I tell you this – There is not a single Ranger who can make passes like the Hawks can…those hard directed accurate passes that stick to the receiver’s sticks, and all done at top speed. So help me – the more I see of the teams in this playoffs the more despair I feel that Rangers will ever reach their level.

  3. Man, it’s quiet in here. Feels like a lot of Boneheads are sliding into offseason mode. It would be nice if the Rangers played some games in May once in a while.

  4. I was in the pool!! on

Any Ranger fan that has been around 20 years or more has a tough dilemna here. Montreal or Pittsburgh. Can’t they both lose? :)

  5. Hey fran – I have to disagree with you about the passing. I think that Gaborik and Del Zotto are capable of that kind of passing – but that’s about it for the rest of the team.

  6. Agreed, Carp – and that really is a very sad idea…

Speaking of Rozsival – how is it he only had 3 goals this season?? As much as I hate having him on the team, the guy actually has a very good shot from the point – how is it possible that NO coach is able to get him to shoot more often?

  7. Isn’t it very unprofessional to call your colleagues and players by their nicknames on the air?

  8. Blackhawks look so bad last night, I couldn’t even bring myself to post a single comment during the match. If they keep this up, they’ll be promptly dismantled in five games.

  9. >>Isn’t it very unprofessional to call your colleagues and players by their nicknames on the
    >>air?

I absolutely hate it when announcers do that with players.

  10. >>Isn’t it very unprofessional to call your colleagues and players by their nicknames on the
    >>air?

Is there a hockey commentating pair in this day and age that actually is professional?

  11. Since I love the pen()s, I love the Pen()s’ Captain, I LOVE SIDNEY CROSBY at least for the next month!!!

  12. good afternoon. and i turn the game on just in time for the talking appendages

  13. thanks milbury for not commenting on marco sturm but going right into talking about hotdog lips for the 9 millionth time. blah

  14. CCCP, i dont think anyone could love the pen()s with quite the same intensity ;-)

  15. Yeah but it should be “Mario’s pen()s” or “Crosby’s pen()s”… Henrik’s got nothing to do with it. Right?

  16. You’re right Sally.

I dream of Jaromir’s Pen()s!!!! I love Jaromir’s Pen()s!!!! Must have been fun to play with!

  17. What a joke.

Sidney and the Pens were turning the puck over in the last 2 minutes leading to that game ending goal.

Almost as if Sidney didnt even care.

Does Sidney want the Bruins to win too?

  18. It looks like the secret to beating Montreal is to never let them take the lead at any point during the game.

  19. The secret to beating Montreal is to wear a Bruins jersey.

Montreal is in the Boston-gift-giving mood.

  20. CHUCK WOOLERY

I responded to your email about the Rangers 1994 Rounds 1 and 2 games, and you never got back to me!!

Poor Sidney and the Pens. They’ll get ’em next game.

  21. The White Plains Batman on

Mara had season ending shoulder surgery. Hopefully he’s still around doing what he usually does in the lockeroom keeping those guys loose. Too bad he’s not a Torts guy, he was awesome in NY.

Wow is PK Subban nasty. I heard he was good but he looks like the real deal. For all you fantasy buffs next year, grab him as a #3-4 DMan.

  22. Can only imagine what his beard looks like by now …

as for the Pen()s stuff, let’s be careful, OK guys and gals. If you can be clever, I’ll let it slide. If it gets too overt and obvious, I won’t.

Worse, I might let Blogmama be the judge. Then you’ll all be in trouble.

  23. NO! Dont tell MAMA!! Shell think Im a little piggy! With all my clamoring about Jaromir’s thingy!!!!!

  24. Lets go Sharks!
It sure does not feel like hockey weather today in the tri state area today.

  25. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

    CR,
I hope you got your share of Crosby today. Geez, I was nauseated after the first period and had to turn the game off. I cannot understand how the pre-game show = Crosby. The TV timeouts return with “star cam” coverage and hilights that = Crosby. The intermissions = Crosby interviews. And the post-game (I assume) is some other form of an “exclusive discussion with the gold-medalist, Stanly cup defending captain, and NHL dancing Buttman-monkey, Sidney Crosby.

Seriously, NHL?! Few people outside Pittsburgh like the guy. Avery said it right when discussing the NHL’s publicity, they do not market the right people. If they picked up on a fierce/hard-working leader they would attract more people than this carp.

  26. True, i changed the channel during the first intermission, and honestly forgot to put the game back on. (although i did take a nap lol) The overkill with that guy is just too much.

  27. just watched tape of habs game. I HATE THE PENS WITH A PASSION.

GO GOMEZ JUST FOR THIS ROUND.

IN REALITY MONTREAL CANT WIN THIS SERIES THOUGH

  28. Johnny LaRue on

Rangers can be summed up in one quote:

“It seems like every week a whole new set of problems would just crop up out of nowhere… except for summer where nothing seemed to happen for months at a time.”

  29. No problem, ilb. Hopefully I’ll be done soon. This is incredibly boring and my paper is bullcarcillo.

  30. Um… “Integration Paper”. Guess they can’t all be as much fun as “Resisting Dominant Narratives of the Sex Trade”…

  31. Good evening all! Even though I’ve been quiet lately, don’t think Carp is wrong. I work for a newspaper. I have lots for your noses and I’ll sniff you out!

Saw part of last night’s “game” between Canucks and Hawks at warren. They turned it off for the fights after 2nd period. Manager said, “game’s over, right?” None of us watching disagreed.

TR and Mrs. TR, a blast as always…love u guys!

  32. Im doing a project too. “How to not resist the dominant sexual traits of one Sidney Crosby”

True, I did not get my fill of him today, unfortunately. Was busy watching a Yankees game and a Sox game.

Can anyone seriously imagine how big Sidney’s Pen()s is this May?

  33. Actually Carp, 5 of 8 is 60%, and 6 of 8 is 75%, so really it was off by one game and even that is give or take. And when you consider the Capital meltdown, well…

  34. NO! Not Okay!!

    I’ll talk about Sidney’s … whenever I want to!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ;-)

  35. Sorry mama, we’ll try to keep it in the boneheads group from now on, right heads?

Sleeping kitten! Soo cute! I’ve got two of my own right here :)

  36. CR, if I ever meet you in person, and I actually hope to one day, heaven help me, be prepared to get such a slap upside your head!

  37. Sally, Stanley is actually a lot smaller than she appears in pics. She looks like a wide load, but is really slim and tiny cute for a grown-up….Aren’t sleeping kitties the best!

and yes, the boneheads group is the best place for “pens” talk….:)

  38. CR, in case Sally doesn’t see your question…oh yes, they are! Here’s one: Princess Dubinsky Wobbles….now, is that awesome or what!!

  39. CR, Princess Dubinsky Wobbles & Gomez, look them up on the sister blog!

Mama, I came home yesterday and one of Dubi’s eyes was watering really bad. Of course I assumed it meant imminent death, and I totally freaked out (I’m going to be a horrible mom, but that’s another story), but she’s been okay since. Maybe she just had something in her eye? Or was half really sad? Has that ever happened to your kittens ever?

  40. Thanks, Sally! I will check them out!

    Gomez…not named after Scott, right?

Aww, I hope the princess is okay.

  41. Sort of named after Scotty… it just fits him really well. He’s kind of dopey and sweet. He’s just such a GOMEZ.

  42. LOL

    I was only kidding.

Scotty Gomez is a great guy, and Gomez is a great name!!!

    What are his nicknames?

  43. Sally, no it hasn’t (has she been watching the playoffs?) It sounds like she doesn’t need to go to vet, but maybe call for advice just in case?

This doesn’t apply to Dubi or Cup (black cats) or half of Stanley’s mutt face. I don’t why this is, but I figured it out from Stan and a friend’s white cat….they get icky stuff in the corner of their eyes that you have to pluck off to clean. Maybe a sensitive thing cause of the whiteness? Dunno….I’ll investigate…

sorry non cat people for non hockey diversion….

  44. Haha I just finished! Still need to proofread, print, and mail it to my lazy professor, but I’m definitely done for the night!

Mama, actually Dubi’s the one that gets weird eye gunk sometimes. It’s not so bad though. They’re both way overdue for a checkup. I’ll call tomorrow. Dubi keeps rubbing her tuchus on the carpet which is NOT cool. Sorry guys, I’ll stop now.

  45. No CR, Laurel is Blogmama’s evil twin….she doesn’t use newspapers but bricks :) but both are technologically stupid :)

  46. CR, Gomez’s nicknames are fattypants, little man, pooper, stupid guy. I swear they’re all said affectionately.

  47. Sally…hmmm? I’d say a call is in order. My cats haven’t seen a vet since before I brought them home. Silly. Cats seem so easy and self-healing…Zamboni saw a vet four times in his 18 years…the last two were too late….I think I gotta make a call too.

  48. peter, you’re right. And that Game 2 of Caps-Habs was the one in which the Caps were down 4-2 in third, tied it, fell behind late (I think) and scored again late, then won in OT. So if the Habs win that game, the Game 2 stat is 6-2 in the first round.

Johnny Larue, I miss you when you’re not around. I wonder how many Boneheads even got that one.

Sally, those are nice nicknames. I approve. Plus you get a lot more latitude than anybody else. I feel like I’ve said that before. Deja vu?

  49. Im coming, just to get an up close look at you Carp, you fine looking Stud!!!

Sally, those are all great nicknames!!!!

  50. i planned on coming to NY last year Carp, I havent seen my parents or friends in 2 years!! Out of that, the May Bonehead fest was born

  51. Now, that’s hockey. I suppose we truly have been watching the bush league all year, Miami was right

  52. 1-nil, Red Wings! As soon as that puck left Datsyuk’s stick, I knew it was a goal. Weird!

  53. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Next season ,plz!!! " … says Greg L. on

    Ummm Next season …please.

  54. Manny Malhotra got robbed. John Macklers’ protege. It’s alright, we have our own checking center. Got him for $8 mil per year.

  55. Are the Wings the hottest (looking) team in the NHL?

The Pens have Talbot, Malkin, and Fleury all take away from Crosby’s superbly dynamite looks!

  56. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Next season ,plz!!! " … says Greg L. on

Yo ORR , USA lost already . Luongo beat usa ORR. The olympics are over. No more hate for each others countries.
ORR , Shark have Team Canada’s top line. You cheer for Sharks , yer a cunuckhead lover!! HAHAHAHAHA!!! An American boy trapped in a Canadians body …sweet.

    USA! USA! USA!

And Fluery looks like a Pony, and Malkin looks like Sloth from The Goonies.

  59. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Next season ,plz!!! " … says Greg L. on

Cr9 , CCCP will give ya his pony.

  60. greg

I hope your use of ‘pony’ is not a euphemism for a body part of CCCP.

    I want a real Poni!

  61. I think Poni is my favorite word!

Now the Rangers have to go out and get a Poni!

  62. Johnny LaRue on

Thanks Carp. I come here every day but there just isn’t much to say.

By the way, I hate anyone who had a pony when they were growing up.

  63. heres a lil interesting Rangers tidbit from Brooksie today:

“Rangers, who conducted organizational meetings last week, are believed keenly interested in signing Ryan McDonagh, whose rights they acquired from Montreal in the Scott Gomez deal, but the Wisconsin defenseman has a fair amount of leverage as he awaits an offer.

McDonagh, who turns 21 next month, would play his senior year for the Badgers if he does not turn pro. If he remains unsigned through next year, McDonagh would become an unrestricted free agent as of Aug. 15, 2011.

Chances are, then, if the 6-foot-1, 215-pound McDonagh, who is regarded as a proficient, stay-at-home type physically ready for the NHL, does not sign this summer, he will not sign at all with the Blueshirts.

And though it would seem necessary for Sather to offer the Entry Level max, we’re hearing McDonagh will make his decision based less on the contract and more on his perception of the Rangers’ program.”

    ******************************************************

preception of the Rangers program! WOW i hope HE doesnt read this blog lol!!

  64. I want a Sidney!

  66. Damn you Orr!

Im walking around my home constantly saying “I Want a Pony” and asking my gf “Can you get me a pony”

All BECAUSE YOU HAD TO MENTION PONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  67. Im just going to try to get this damn PONI out of my system.

PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI PONI

  68. Sally, the Tony can take you to Sardi’s.

Johnny, I never saw a picture of an immigrant sitting on a pony.

Linda, sounds like the birth of Festivus (sorry, Seinfeld reference).

CR, I’m still not sure if I can make it, but please don’t scare me away. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  69. I hate anyone who fed that pony cocaine for breakfast when they were growing up, and cause the pony to sneeze his brains out of his nose while he suffered slowly.

We might hate the same guy, i don’t know.

    CR

The word “Pony” originated from a Bostonian.

  70. I know about festivus! lmao, i actually watched part of that one a few weeks ago, thanks to you guys

  71. Orr

Since I can neither confirm nor deny your claim, I will cease use of that “filthy disgusting word”

Much thanks! Whew! I feel like a weight has been lifted!

  72. Johnny LaRue on

Who would leave a country packed with ponies to come to a non-pony country?

  73. wicky (Positionally sound=soft in NHL speak!!) on

    carp
why else would we come to NY not during ranger season!?!?!?!

  74. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

The evening posts get more bizarre, even when you think they’ve hit the backside bullseye on the bizarro target… they still find their way to the next level. Nice work fella’s/ladies.

  75. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

    Let’s go, Little Joe!

What’s the story in that game, linda?

  76. Another 5v3 for San Jose. Red Wings are self-destructing with all these penalties.

  77. True fans

Mets had a 5-2 lead with Santana on the mound, and gave up 9 runs (8 two out runs) to go down 11-5.

The problem with Santana is, he has lost velocity off his slider, and lost the effectiveness of his slider.

  78. Exact quote from announcer, “Look at Pavelski, like a shark.” Hmm, he IS a Shark, no?

  79. Do not stick a fork in a Poni!

    Or a Sidney!

    Or a Fleury!

    Or a Bylsma!

    Or a Malkin!

    Or a Kennedy!

    Or a Talbot!

    Or a Gonchar!

  80. reginald dunlop on

hmmmmmmm………seems like the Penguins and the Sharks are the NHL’s darlings this year……. enough 3rd Period powerplays for both……

Good night John-Boy. Good night Jim-Bob.

    Good night, Sally!

  82. HOLY ****

Wanna feel your warmth upon me, I wanna be the one

Im so tired of not having you Jaromir that I cant sleep

I am screaming inside for Jaromir, but cant be heard

Im not afraid to love you Jaromir, and not afraid to lose
Clinging to a nonexistent reality that doesnt let me choose

  86. STILL NOT DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    and it’s still burning hot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and Im back to stallling agaain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  87. Good morning, boneheads!

Great games last night. Sharks look like real deal this year. I still believe that Vancouver will win it all. They look more solid and have better goaltending than Sharks.

On the other note, I’m not sure if people want to talk about it, but I do. This place is starting to be more and more difficult to read and more unpleasant to visit. I wonder how many people who just read and don’t post stopped visiting. There are a lot of incoherent, almost psychotic, self centered posts that have very little to do with the spirit and nature of this place. I might be the only one who feels this way, but something tells me I’m not.

  88. ilb – I’m one of those who always read and rarely post and I agree with you. I’m all for a little TV trivia, pet stories, even the beer jingles had me laughing. Its conversation among friends. Some joking around when there is nothing else to talk about is great, but I agree things are going a little too far. Not quite in the right “spirit”, as you say. I’m skipping way more posts than I used to, and it seems like some of the old regulars are leaving. Hopefully just a product of the off-season. Still love the blog and even the comments, just wish it would tone down a little. For the most part though, you guys are hilarious – and I’m one of Carp’s biggest fans for sure.

  89. “use of deadly ebow pads” – lol

jpg – I know I’m not a regular poster, but I actually did speak up when people were complaining it wasn’t a “hockey related” post — I like the friendly conversation and think it adds to the board. It’s just a few subjects & the type of posts ilb was referring to that I was talking about. Just my 2 cents.

  90. Staal Wart on

Is that the sequel to the sequel…damn how many batman movie’s do we need?

  91. haven’t been to the board all too much lately. been too busy to keep up and barely have had the time to watch the playoff games.
so, i don’t know what’s going on. can’t blame the subject matter swirling down the drain when there’s not going on in Rangerland.

as far as Batman, i guess they’ll keep making sequels if it makes a studio some money. at least director Christopher Nolan has been doing some interesting things with the franchise…so far.

  92. conspiracy theory on

    ilb

completely agree on some of the posts. until carp cares about quality and not numbers then the cr9’s and orr’s of the world will continue to ruin things.

they should take the outrageous stuff to the facebook area.
