I was thinking last night, as we post the finalists for the major awards each day, that I haven’t heard much from my Boneheads about the awards—except for the Vezina, and the usual distaste for a certain No. 30 who plays not far from MSG.
Now, I know you guys are smarter than a lot of NHL GMs (they vote for the Vezina). And I’m sure you are smarter than a lot of the broadcasters (they vote for the coach of the year). I doubt you are smarter than sportswriters (just kidding) who vote for everything else.
But I am curious about your thoughts on the big awards: The Hart (MVP), Calder (rookie), Norris (defenseman) and Adams (coach).
By the way, I will be out working, so I won’t be able to post today’s finalists. You guys can feel free to get them at NHL.com at noon or so and put them in the comments. Usually I’d count on Laurel in a situation like this, but she’s out partying, probably at some Blackjack table as we speak, in Vegas.

My thoughts on the NHL awards as mentioned above:
Hart- Henrik Sedin, carried the Canucks to a high seed.
Calder- Matt Duchene.
Norris- Drew Doughty, maybe Keith, but I just like the way Doughty plays.
Adams- Dave Tippett of Phoenix, not even close in my eyes.
Error, I mean Ecklund, is reporting that Risebrough will be named the next GM of the Rangers and that Slats is being shuffled to another position.

Chasing a rumor this morning from an A1 source…It is looking like Doug Risebrough could be the next GM of the NY Rangers. According to my source, Sather would be moved to a “new” position in the organization.
Moving Sather out would not be much of a surprise given the past decade or so, however bringing in Doug Risebrough wouid be an interesting departure for the Blue Shirts. I really like Doug as a GM, however he is widely looked at as one of the most conservative/stand pat GMs in the league…quite the opposite of the NY Rangers M.O.. Could Doug shange hos ways and make the sorts of mood this ownership requires? We will see…

I agree about the big guy grabby MZA isn’t going to cut it obviously. Holmstrom is a free agent, but he is getting up there in years and is more of a front of the net guy. Armstrong is a free agent in ATL I believe. Iggy could be had from calgary perhaps…...It just sucks because the rangers just suck at drafting physical d men and physical forwards (they always pass on them to take puck movers or little guys, the one time they do they should have taken the little guy…..parise). Not sure who else is out there yet, but we do need to get bigger!

I would go with Miller for Hart, Duchene for Calder, I am not sure for Norris, and Tippett for Adams. Green will probably win the Norris just because he has the most points, but he isn’t the best defenseman. Keith, Doughty, and Pronger were all the most well rounded this year.

GM Chuck Fletcher wanted to give Thompson plenty of time to move on, and frankly, the Wild is so convinced Thompson will be employed by future Lightning or Rangers or xxx GM Doug Risebrough any day now, the team won’t include Thompson in any meeting in an interest to protect their internal info when it comes to its draft list.

I am upset with the fact that the Chi-Nash series is a game behind the other series. that could mean a delay after the other first round series are over. one of the big problems last year was the long delays between rounds that took away the momentum, excitement, and carryover enthusiasm
I understand that some series will go 7 games and others will not. that is unavoidable. but if we have to wait 2 extra days for the end of one series when the others are over becuase of scheduling, and it takes 4 or 5 days between rounds again,well that is unacceptable.
Each playoff game I watch I am reminded how bad the rangers suck..
A goalie like Hank watching the playoffs….trade him now and let him win somewhere…This ship is sunk.

Dave Tippet could easily win coach of the year, and deserves it, but that team does have some talent, and some leadership, and a capable goalie. He did a great job, but i think Sacco deserves it, cause the Avs were supposed to finish dead last, and it was a team full of kids, with a few talented players, and a goalie who was for the most part, a no-name goalie.
I think Sacco deserved it a little more than Tippet.

Being a hockey fan, I realize that I am in a minority of sports fans. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s nauseating how much an off-season NFL DRAFT dominates an amazing battle for the oldest and most difficult (and most prized [to some]) trophy in all of professional sports—Lord Stanley’s Cup.
