These busy nights (updated)

259

The best part about the first round is that there are so many games, and games every night. As soon as they get down to eight teams, the games dwindle. So enjoy this while you can.

Tonight’s sked: Game 4s in ‘Yotes-Wings, Pens-Sens, Devils-Flys, Hawks-Preds and Sharks-Lanche.

—————————-

I’m going to be honest with you and say when I’ve got nothing, and that’s going to happen in an off-season that’s going to be at least three weeks longer than last off-season. Today I’ve got nothing, and a busy sked.

But each day I’ll  try to have a blank canvas for your Boneheading experience. See youse.

—————————–

AFTERNOON UPDATE, 12:07 P.M.: Selke finalists: Pavel Datsyuk, Jordan Staal, Ryan Kesler.

  1. Carp,

You’ve gotta have something! A story maybe? Your favorite story of “The Captain”… Kelly Kisio.

  2. TheREALMikeyNJ on

Here’s a question for you Carp and everyone:

The oilers admitted today they HAVE to move Souray, even it it means eating salary and not getting much in the return.

So my question is this: Do you (and the Rangers management) inquire about a straight up trade of Wade REdden for Sheldon Souray?

To me it benefits us, Souray is older, and has health issues, but is def looking to prove himself after this year, and at the very least provides a Power play point man with a huge shot. Plus he only has one or two years left on his contract, as opposed to Redden’s 4 or 5 years right?

To me, I do this in a heartbeat, just to get rid of Redden.
Plus Souray’s cap hit is lower (I think by a million and change)

Plus good ole Tom Renney would help as I’m sure he loved Redden

    Thoughts?

  3. mikey- i would do that deal, but i think we would have to give up somebody in order to make that trade. i just dont think they would do a straight up dud for dud when one has a higher and longer contract. theres no incentive for them to do that unless we give them a prospect. haha lets give them lisin!!

  4. REALMikey, it would be better if they just dumped Redden to Hartford and got out from under the whole mess, than to trade his dreadful cap-hit for another dreadful cap-hit. But if they aren’t willing to do the Hartford thing, then yes, I’d make that deal.

mike in ia, I have no way of knowing, since I only saw him play a couple of Olympic games. He was good there. But there’s also a reason he wasn’t drafted. They’re throwing a dart and trying to hit something here. No risk.

  5. or, maybe we work out a deal that we send redden, duby, sangs and our first for souray and their first. if that wont do it, trade redden, duby, sangs, our first and second picks this year for souray and their first(which is either hall or seguin. imagine that!! no chance lol!!

  6. carp- so what youre trying to say is, hes hartford bound!! lolol. no but i really think he is. playing in the olympics always brings the best out of players usually. so im not gonna base my opinion of him on that. i know he was sel’s mvp, but yea, like you said, its a low risk move. at worst,he takes papsmears spot and pap stays up on teh big club

The next to last No. 11 before Messier.

Ah yes, Graves wore #11 for that one game in 91-92 before the Steven Rice trade. In Boston, no?

  8. Mike and Mike- straight up won’t happen. Souray’s cap hit is $5.4 mil for two years, Redden’s $6.5 for 4. We will have to give up something, but I would strongly consider it. If Souray helps, fine. And he still can. He’s got a cannon from the blueline. And he is physical and can fight well. Having said that, he’s been staying away from the physical part lately. If he doesn’t help, I doubt he can be worse than Redden. This could be the best way to rid the team of his contract, because I doubt that Redden will be sent to the minors as long as Sather is around. And btw, Lisin won’t cut it, Mike.

  9. I think they’re going to try really hard to get rid of Redden this off-season. Funny though that he was the only one “protected” by Torts in his breakup day throwing the players under the bus-a-thon.

  10. Maybe if the deal was Redden/Sanguinetti and a pick for Souray? DI’ll admit to knowing nothing about Edmonton’s prospects, so I have no clue if they need another D-man.

  11. Also remember this: he can’t be demoted to AHL until the training camp. And this limits their moves during the summer. The cap can only go 10% above the cap over the summer, with his contract that lives very little wiggle room.

  12. I agree with Carp though, sending Redden to Hartford would be the easiest and least painful route.

If he doesn’t like it, tough tiddlywinks, ya should have played better.

  13. Thanks, ilb. I didn’t know that little nugget about the sending to the AHL. Just puts another cramp in the plans. Blech.

  14. leetchhalloffame on

Real Mikey – a real no-brainer on the Redden/Souray deal. redden for anybody or anything would be nice.

  15. yes carp we want to hear your thoughts on who gets the Ds, Fs, and incompletes this year….any A’s???? I dont think im handing out any A’s- a few A-‘s!

  16. I don’t understand the great trepidation ( among Ranger management) for sending Redden to Hartford. Is it because of his stellar play? His longevity ?( after all the great Chelios was sent to the minors and did a stint before being reclaimed – for a while)…there is so much pussy footing in this management system ..enough to as they say “gag a maggot”.

It’s perhaps the greatest single reason why Rangers have floundered so long with mediocrity..they make a mistake in over paying a player, then haven’t the guts to admit the mistake and compound the error by refusing to chastise or remove or demote him. Incredible management practices. The ones that this Ranger management should really fear is the great unwashed…(to them),yeah the fans.

Redden can’t hurt them…(other than the way he normally does…on ice.) But they are so tepid in their reactions. Torts carries out his frustrations by berating many of the team players ..but without coming down really hard on those who truly deserve. it…..no–those are the ones who are usually given extra ice time. ( Oh, Alice…ready to step back thru the looking glass yet?)

  17. TheREALMikeyNJ on

    Carp:

Dont you have the feelign that Sather jsut WONT send him to HArtford?
I mean we had all season of him palying terrbile and he didnt get sent down, so I doubt Tomato Face will own up to hsi horrible mistake now.

Redden plus a prospect for Souray I would def do.

And agree with above, even if Souray gets injured again, we have depth in Hartford that could be brought up

I guess the whole poin tof this si one way or the other, Redden has to be GONE from this team beofre next season. For the cap space, for his terrible play, for our future.

Drury is imoveable, and Rosi can be traded, but out of the three Redden is the MUST BE GONE!!

  18. why would you give up a prospect, on a team so badly in need of top personnel, when you can just Wolf Pack him?

  19. TheREALMikeyNJ on

Carp thats the point Sather REFUSES to Wolf Pack him and admit he was wrong. The guy is a total egomaniac

A trade is the only way out of Redden’s nightmare deal

  20. In fairness, he did admit mistakes in the past: Holik, Kasparaitis, Gomez, Brashear, Kotalik, Higgins.

Why wouldn’t you think he’d admit this one?

  21. Linda says SIGN PRUST!!!! on

Good morning Carp, Sally and the usual boneheaded suspects!

forgive me if i am wrong, but didnt slats wolfpack (new verbage!!!) Kasparitis? Just freakin send this DOT Traffic Cone to Hartford. Who in their *RIGHT MIND* will actually do a trade for him?? The guy has nothing left in the tank and a humongous contract.

  22. Linda says SIGN PRUST!!!! on

Carpy, maybe because this one is the most expensive one, and he made it seem like this guy was going to be the answer to our power play problems?

  23. Well, we are talking $6.5 mil for 4 more years, being paid in AHL. How’s that for a mistake? I would love to see if he has guts to admit to that magnitude of a mistake.

  24. hooray! I heard through the rumor line (Meaning I made this up) that rozival and redden played 18 holes with a final score of -20! When asked why they did this, they said, “Well, we ended the season with minuses, so we figured we just copy our game to the golf course! “

  25. Linda says SIGN PRUST!!!! on

lol ilb, to go along with the 1.4 pillowhands will be getting next season ;-)

  26. There you go, Linda. Think of it, in a few years the retirement home will move to Hartford, with payroll of around $25-30 mil. Along with $56 mil payroll in NY that will amount to above $80 mil. Isn’t that what Rangers payroll was in 2002-2003? Without making the playoffs? So remind me, please, what changed?

  27. Linda says SIGN PRUST!!!! on

    what changed? hmmm.

They do actually let a few young kids play now.
We have a crazy Italian coach, an assistant coach who reads the blog and dresses sharply.
They charge more for tickets and concessions and cablevision.

other than that, NOTHING lol….so sad

  28. joey, that’s especially funny to me because my father said he saw Rozsival and Prospal on the golf course the other day. Doubt they were -20, though.

  29. Adam Graves is right with #11, what # did Espo wear when he came to NY………#12 kinda weird hun?

  30. Hedberg,

He didn’t wear it for long right? I know #5 was in there before he went to #77.

  31. Espo was 77. Graves wore 11 in Boston on opening night (Bernie Nicholls wore No. 9). As soon as Nicholls was traded for Messier, Graves switched to No. 9. He will barely admit it, but he knew that was going to happen.

  32. If it wasn’t for Tim Kerr and his 7 goals we’d probably have #12 retired right now.

  33. Carp,

Maloney was gone by the time Graves signed in NY. Kerr was traded for a few months earlier I think.

  34. Linda says SIGN PRUST!!!! on

ya know whats weird. Whenever i think of 14, i think of mike allison! Don’t ask me why!!!

  35. Espo wore #12 for a bit. But ultimately known for his #77. Regarding #36 – I’ll always remember that number for the great Glenn Anderson but the last player to wear it was Byers, no?

  36. CR, yup.

Kerr was definitely on the team when Messier arrived. I remember his famous freudian remark after all those surgeries: “I hope to have a health-free season.”

Mike Allison, after a game, once gave my little sister flowers he had gotten from a fan.

Another great No. 12 = Kris King.

  37. Grr…Glenn Anderson, along for the ride Glenn (traded for the best ‘stache the Rangers had in my formative years of watching the team, Gartner).

There’s a few things the Rangers need to avoid in personnel decisions, both in the front office and on the ice:

    – guys named Glen(n)
    – former Devils
    – former Sabres
    – former Oilers execs and coaches

  38. Famous Ranger Sweaters
    #2 – Tom Laidlaw
#9 – Bernie Nicholls and Pavel Bure
    #11 – Wilf Paiement
    #23 – Ed Boxcar Hospidar

Who can forget the great number 37:

Paul Broten – who was the Islander he dumped over the boards? He checked him and just finished it by dumping his legs over the boards.

  39. Datsyuk for the Selke, I have a feeling he’s going to be like Lidstrom and the Norris for the next few years.

  40. Linda says SIGN PRUST!!!! on

lmao! looking at the all time roster by jersey number is hilarious. I swear i forgot some of these guys played on the Rangers!

  41. Ray Sheppard has to be my favorite #23. He had some pretty good years after signing in Detroit.

  42. Carp April 20th, 2010 at 2:18 pm

The Rangers bought Ray Sheppard for $1.

Firetrucking inflation! Now you have to pay $6 mil per year for a pile of carcillo.

  43. Linda says SIGN PRUST!!!! on

lol orr. wouldnt that mean drury, puddin, and rozsi are done also?

  44. Linda says SIGN PRUST!!!! on

omg what the hell happened to Kelly LeBrock? damn new york post scaring me today!

  45. ALL HAT - NO CATTLE on

So Redden being younger than Souray gives Redden some value? Whether the worst player in the NHL is 20, 30, or 40, whatever you can get for him, or just plain bombing him to the Moon if you can’t move him to another dolt NHL organization, works.

  46. ALL HAT - NO CATTLE on

I am sure Jean Beliveau appreciates what Arnie Brown did for the #4, in NHL folklore. Lol. Arnie Brown was the Redden-Kalinin-Roman Endur of his day. (Not the biggest tribute you can pay a man.)

I remember, one night, after the Rangers lost to Montreal at the Old Garden, 2-1, some extrovert in the lobby, leaving the building, loudly shared his observation: FINAL SCORE: ARNIE BROWN 2 – RANGERS 1. As regards Redden we can all relate, and sadly there is not much humor in that remark.

  47. Linda says SIGN PRUST!!!! on

Reminds me of the couple of weeks I worked with Neil Smith. Prior to July 1, Neil asked for a fax machine to be installed in his office. He wanted to sign Mike Sillinger and Tom Poti, and Ted Nolan requested Brendan Witt and Chris Simon. “Here’s how it works,” said Neil. “You target your priorities. You ask the agent what he wants. If you really want the guy, you give him what he wants and send it through the fax. If he gets another offer and wants more, you put another fax through the machine. It’s not rocket science.” Except for Aaron Ward, who got an extra year from the Rangers, Neil signed every player the staff targeted.

  51. tr-808 interesting. I read from a few sources that Neil Smith really targeted Stu Grimson before he signed with Anaheim.

  52. Thanks for MZA info, TR.

LMAO, that explains it! Sather has two fax machines in his office. The agent asks for the price and the genious sends it through both machines, just to be sure. i bet you that’s how R&R got their salaries.

  53. Always loved Wilfy #11 dirty and tough as sin. Too bad we got him so late, like usual, but in my top ten non rangers until he came our way.

  54. orr- i got an awesome lineup in nhl10. before you start a season,go to roster management, player movement, put all high potential young guys on your ahl roster. i got filatov, mats frodo from modo assen, then i have a created trio of kreider, stepan, grachev, and i think i had to make dz too. then when you stock up your team full of 19-22 year old rooks with a or b potential, trade some of them for some good players. i got nik backstrom centering gabby and duby. then i have kesler centering cally and aves, then dru centering AA and prust. then boyle, shelly(who has 3 goals in 6 games) and weise.

  55. orr- you play it on hard? i put teh ai all the way up and play on all star. its hard enough for me that i actually resemble the real rangers when i play! lol. i can barely get a shot off.lol

  56. i like franchise mode. i do get trade crazy though. and free agent signing crazy too. i wanna always build a realistic team. i also sign top free agents and trade them for a teams 1st draft pick. i got like 10 first round picks already and its only in december in teh game.

  101. >>How the freak Devils fans handle these two annoying commentators on regular basis is

Those fans probably don’t deserve any better. There’s another goofy guy who subs in for Emrick; he’s equally as annoying.

  102. Didn’t Mike Seaver have his own entrance later on in Growing Pains? I bet Boner had the key though. Maybe Cooke is Cindy’s Boner. hahaha

  103. “Lundqvist makes 7.75 million and we call him King”

That really bugs me. Hank is overpaid, and he’s overrated.

But, everyone is willing to throw the bank at a solid goalie these days, so you can’t really complain aboot how much he’s making. With Dredden, and Dreary it’s completely different.

  104. Why do people want the Preds to win? They play boring hockey – they’re the Devils West. I love the way teams like the Hawks and Caps play. It’s exciting to watch. Washington-Chicago would be an awesome final!

lmao ORR, thats odd! i guess the southern connection is working better tonight. then again, we’re like the only ones posting right now, along with chuck

  115. Linda says SIGN PRUST!!!! on

lmao, that lady behind Trotz had big southern hair, and at one point it looked like he was a big haired blonde with no neck

  116. Yes, I knew you were kidding Linda… I just wanted to take the opportunity to insult Tawmmy Heinsohn.

    :)

    __

By the way, if you are going to break a law in Boston, I would suggest public urination on Tim Thomas. He is well-deserving of being peed on.

Theres nothing I’d love to see more right now than a first round exit by the Devs.

  118. Oh Manny! I am glad I am still at work and didn’t go to the game. Aves really needed this one

Those pics of Del Z And Boyle are classic

Natty Light and some college ladies.

Good for the kid,He had a great rookie year.

He’s prob got so mmany “fine young ladies” getting thrown at him he doesnt know what to do with it. That’s why Boyle is there, to show him how to handle all that college booty.

HAHA Eat it devils, one and done.
I mean I really hate Philthy, but they dont have enough talent and discipline to make it past the second round, no mater who they face, so beat the devils fo rus ranger fans, then get knocked out next round

  120. Thanks for the birthday wishes from yesterday. I was tied up with work most of the afternoon and then the Mrs. and I went out for dinner last night.

Restaurant tangent: Wolfgang’s steakhouse on 33rd and Park. It was opened by the former head waiter from Peter Luger’s so it’s essentially the same restaurant but in Manhattan and not Williamsburg. Took almost an hour past our reservation to get seated but it’s well worth it. Tomato and onion salad, porterhouse for 2 medium rare, German hash browns, creamed spinach. Good thing I did my running before dinner otherwise I think would have needed medical assistance to extricate me from my seat afterwards.

Well for those on Facebook, I got a happy birthday from Dancin Larry. I replied back to him that a Devil’s loss was almost as good as a Rangers win et voila, it looks to me that it’ll be another one and done playoff appearance for Lardy Marty. Now despite him being the sole goal scorer for the Devils last night, how much do you think a 1st round bounce is going to cost Kovalchuk on the FA market?

  121. Happy belated CTB!

Their defense has been suspect all year and now it’s really falling apart. And at 37, as great as he is, Marty can not save them. I actually predicted their loss, but I think I said in 7. Would be very happy if I was wrong and they go out in 5.

Kovalchuk has been pretty mediocre in the playoffs so far, but even if he was great, it wouldn’t matter. It’ll take a miracle for Lou to revamp their defense during off-season.

  122. I agree ilb, the Devils defense is very low on high end talent.

I’ve never understood the infatuation with Paul Martin, or at least why analysts thought his absence from the US team was a huge blow. He’s decent in all areas, but not dominant in any particular facet of the game. Suter and Erik Johnson were better all around D, Rafalski is a better option from the point, Orpik and Gleason are better hitters. Maybe he’d be on the same level of Jack Johnson but I think Johnson has a higher upside.

Then you go down the rest of Devils D and no one stands out as perennial all-star or even “best D that no one’s heard of” type talent. I think Staal has the ability to be a better shutdown D than anyone on their team and Del Zotto has the potential to be a better PP QB, point man than anyone they have as well.

Funny though if you read the comments over on Fire and Ice blog, all the fans are butchering Lemaire for the constant line shuffling

  123. Happy belated b-day CT!

I was hoping that the Devils and Flyers would beat the carcillo out of each other over 7, but looks like the Devils decided to not show up. Anyone who thinks the Rangers should sign Kovalchuk is downright nutso.

  124. So which member of the Coaches With No Neck fraternity will get furthest in the playoffs? Barry Trotz, Bruce Boudreau, Claude Julien? No Ken Hitchcock this year though. Since Torts isn’t in the playoffs, Mike Babcock automatically wins the Scowl Face contest.

  125. bull dog line on

    Boucher = Elite.
Mickey, why is that, because the Rangers have to many 40 goal types, and to many high skilled guys. I think anybody that doesn’t want to sign him, or somebody like him is nutso.

  126. Boucher = Elite.

    …….

Sure he is… against offensively challenged Devils…Let’s see Elite Boucher against Pissburgh or Craps… or even Ottawa

  127. bull dog, for starters, they won’t be able to fit him under the cap. Also because while he’s a 40 goal scorer, I honestly just do not see him suceeding in NY. He’s more suited to flying under the radar in some smaller city. I have a feeling he’s going to the KHL, too.

  128. I worry about Babcock. His face is gonna freeze like that one day and it’ll scare all the kiddies.

  129. Send Redden to Hartford and have Potter take his place.

Redden for Souray? Sure. Hopefully Souray can stay healthy because he is a beast.

  130. bull dog line on

    MickeyM,
the Rangers ought to make you an advisor, this way you can tell them who is cut for NY, and who is not.
CCCP, of course Boucher is going to get torched by any of those teams you mentioned, but it is looking like he is going to get to play in 2 more rounds than our elite goalie Hank. do you think that is because Boucher is better than Hank, or is that the Flyers have just a little bit more talent and toughness than the Rangers.

  131. I’m pretty convinced that Kovalchuk used his salary demands as a way to divorce himself from ATL. I mean he’s asking for more money than Ovechkin and Crosby and he hasn’t achieved quite what either of those players have either in terms of personal or team awards. Him going to the KHL would be a big coup for them, but who knows about the viability of the league and their actual ability to pay the large sums of money they promise (promise being the operative word).

Now I know I’ve heard people mention that he wants to stay out of the spotlight, but honestly in hockey circles, even if the Rangers have a loyal and passionate fanbase several players have mentioned (including Jagr) that in NY you kind of have the best of both worlds. The team is well supported inside the arena, but off the ice, the players are pretty anonymous when compared to the other celebs in the city.

I’d be amenable to signing Kovalchuk if it meant dropping Redden and letting some of the other deadwood go. I actually think it would help with Anisimov and eventually Grachev. It would certainly give them scoring depth that they haven’t had in years. I’d keep Gaborik and Kovalchuk on separate lines just to not put all the eggs in one basket, but put them on the same PP unit.

But I have a feeling that if LA lets Frolov walk, they’ll have a pretty decent amount of cap room to use.

  132. Good morning, Carp! Facebook lets me know when it’s a bonehead birthday. Wikipedia lets me know the rest…

Happy birthday Iggy Pop, Tony Danza, Robert Smith, Vinny Lecavalier, and the drummer for Rancid!

    Happy Grounation Day, Rastafarians!

  133. Bouche is far from elite, but he’s been surprisingly solid when needed to.

Kovalchuk would give a serious offensive boost to any team, let alone an offensively challenged Rangers. Players with his type of skills are as difficult to find as a true elite goaltender. But not for the price he is asking. That would kill our cap, not to mention it isn’t in great shape already. And not before (and if) we find a true first line center. And a physical d-man.
