Break-up day; lottery night

I’m headed to the Rangers’ practice facility this morning for break-up day, and will post some reactions from players and John Tortorella during the day.

In the meantime, here’s the release from the NHL about tonight’s draft lottery:

NEW YORK (April 12, 2010) — The National Hockey League Draft Drawing, a weighted system to determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, will take place Tuesday, April 13, at 8 p.m. ET.
The League, in cooperation with TSN, will unveil the results of the Draft Drawing live during a 30-minute program, 2010 LG NHL® Draft Lottery — produced and televised by TSN in Canada. The special presentation will also be simulcast on VERSUS and streamed live on in the U.S.
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly will be live in TSN’s studio to reveal the order of selection for the top picks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. The Draft Drawing involves Clubs that do not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, or the Clubs that acquired the first-round drafting positions of those non-playoff clubs.

Per NHL rules, the Club selected in the Draft Drawing may not move up more than four positions in the draft order. Thus, the only Clubs with the opportunity to receive the first overall selection are the five teams with the lowest regular-season point totals, or the Clubs that acquired an eligible Club’s first-round draft pick. No club will move down more than one position as a result of the Draft Drawing.
The percentage chance of a team being selected in the Draft Drawing:

Edmonton        25.0%
Boston (from TOR)        18.8%
Florida        14.2%
Columbus        10.7%
NY Islanders        8.1%
Tampa Bay        6.2%
Carolina        4.7%
Atlanta        3.6%
Minnesota        2.7%
NY Rangers        2.1%
Dallas        1.5%
Anaheim        1.1%
Phoenix (from CGY)        0.8%
St. Louis        0.5%
The 2010 NHL Entry Draft will take place at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. The first round will take place on Friday, June 25 commencing at 4 p.m. (local time) and the subsequent rounds (two through seven) will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 26.

About Author

  1. Hopefully the scouts have been working hard to mine some gems from this draft. Anything after the first 3 or 4 is a guess (hello Nik Zherdev! at #5)

I wonder if any of the Rangers have been reading the blogs lately? I guess we will know if any of the players burst into tears when they see Carp.

  2. Gotta love this little snippet from TSN’s power rankings:

It’s tough to miss the playoffs on the results of a shootout, but after getting outshot 47-27, it’s not like the Rangers can claim they deserved a better fate in Sunday’s must-win game at Philadelphia. It’s such a strangely mismatched roster, with overpaid underperforming veterans on one side and improving young players on the other and the Blueshirts haven’t quite figured out how to make that work. Having fewer overpaid underperformers is, generally, a good start.

  3. Carp and Everyone –

Thanks for a great blog. This is the place to come and learn about (for the most part) the real scoop on our team. Hope for the Fall!!

  4. Of all of the free agents this year, Tomas Plekanec might be the only forward the Rangers should go for. He has good production and should be relatively cheap. As long as the price is right, I would do it. A steady and physical presence on D is up in the air. Those guys seem to come to NY and falter, so I am not sure about that signing.

  5. “If I had the Rangers payroll we’d win the Cup every year”.

    – Sather with Edmonton

  6. do you know if the rangers have equipment sales like the other teams do?

i see on ebay equipment from phoneix detriot etc.. etc.. but have never heard of the rangers doing that.. any idea? if not can you steal me a stick?

HI Carp,Thank you for another great season in which you gave us the opportunity cheer, vent, criticize and discuss the rangers.
I don’t understand why the NHL has this lottery system when the other pro sports conduct their drafts in reverse order of the teams standings?

I guess msg will be airing more “best of the rangers” and the 94 cup finals reruns.

And a thank you to the ny rangers for keeping the tradition of mediocrity intact ..

  8. You’d really want a Rangers player’s stick? Anyone’s besides Gaborik’s at least? What are the odds that Redden played with the same one the entire season?

  9. Normally I’d take what Brooks says with a tremendous grain of salt, and although he’s pointing out things the hardcore fans already know, he’s not that wrong with most of his assessments. Now there’s some names of his list of core players that I think are somewhat marginal but at some point the turnover needs to stop.

  10. good morning evrybody!! yes, i have to thank you carp for creating a great atmosphre for the blog and keeping it fun. it was a little too uptight when i first got here(before you joined us!!)and we all appreciate your dedication to teh blog and that you helped keep the blog alive for us. the place has grown immensely since i started coming here and you give great insight of the team, while keeping it casual enough so anybody can come here and feel welcome. i am addicted to this place!! the guest blog spots you gave me and some others was a fun thing to do. you better stay here forever uncle carp!!!! haha

    morning ilbzo!!! almost forgot!!

orr, greg- i do like you both and are cool peeps. i just dont get why you can blame hank on the shootout. he was awesome in the game!! he was dead tired because they spent nearly the entire game in our end pressuring us, and forcing him to make save after save after save!! the team sucked in front of him. i know i have been hard at times on him during the season but the last few weeks and even months, he has ben tremendously tremdous and olli and ec shouldve scored on bouch-league!!! they blew it!! our ahler for life scored, but 5 million dollar nostrildamus couldnt even atrtempt a simple deke!! and the whole game only shelly and prust,AA had chances!! one maybe 2 nice shots from gabby and duby all game long. and dz too. nothing much else.

  11. Good article by Brooks today. Especially agreed with tha notion of not turning over 3/4ths of the roster for the third sraight year. That has really hurt this team.

  12. CTB- if you look carefully at our FWs under the contract for the next year, exreme makeover isn’t even possible. The decision should be made on 1st line center at the moment. If they don’t go for one, then we will have just a little better production next year, providing that Callahan, Dubinsky and AA score more. Could be enough to get us into playoffs. May not be a bad idea. The available centers are either too expensive or on decline.

  13. TheREALMikeyNJ on

    Paul MArtin – Nuff said

He’s a free agent, and if Uncle Lou Hasn’t resigned him by now, he prob isn’t gonna

Trade Rosi in the offseason, and sign him.

  14. Robby Bonfire on

Good morning, world. Things look brighter, today. Next year is here, for us. Putting this year behind us is a big plus.

  15. Yeah, Larry really has no personal issues with Torts. At all. Except half of his article is spent on discussing exactly that. I still feel that Torts needs another year. And I would have Shelley talk to media instead of him. Problem solved.

  16. CT – i agree. I read Brooksie’s article earlier and i would agree with his list apart from PAP and Christensen. I don’t imagine we’ll be seeing any of Stepan, Kreider or McDonut for 2-3 years unless they really tear it up in the juniors or AHL.

I think our entire offseason depends on whether we can remove Redden and/or Roszival from the roster and whether our GM remains in place.

I also think we should draft this guy (recognise the name…?):

  17. All of you folks who think Girardi should be rehired ( including Brooks)are whistling by the graveyard. This guy has repeatedly shown himself to be a stroller. I think that he’s been watching too many Redden moves). He only puts out in sports( and very few ofthem at that.) He’d join wholeheartedly, my list for “detachables” But DON’T kick out the kids. I still can’t get over it. Jokinen for the shoot out and Artesimov ( among others) on the bench, and Lisin not even dressed. Yeah he’s a great tactician. If he only kept Lisin for the POSSIBLE shoot out it would have been a
smart tactic. But this guy is strictly minor league.

  18. I mentioned in a previous post, the NYR should have a 2 year plan. Don’t sign any crazy UFA’s fill the spots with guys from Hartford. Only sign UFA’s that we need to fill holes (none for more than 2 years). Drury and Rozi expire then, THAT is when the Rangers can make a serious move to be contenders.

    2 years from now.

  19. cwgatti- that what a real GM and the owner would do. But we have neither. So I’m sure they already talked it over and the plan is to do whatever necessary to make the playoffs next year.

  20. ilb, Larry and Torts are BFF’s. Their “tiff” this year was all an act to try and get the team motivated and playing better.

Obviously it didn’t work as well as they thought it would.

And yes, I say all this in jest.

  21. I think Girardi is too young to give up on (25), he is not really due much of a raise (10%?) and if we can rid us of the 2 R’s he plays well when partnered with Staal. He’s been OK this year (bad at times), but i think the constant changing of partners and playing too much with Redden has caused his development to level off.

I’m really hoping every morning i open IE now to see the NYR headlines : “Sather fired/retires after Rangers miss playoffs again” ….i live in hope!

  22. UKRanger, I have no problem with them keeping Christensen. He seemed to have some chemistry with Gabby and has a higher skill set than some of the other players on the roster. I just think he hasn’t quite figured out how to make his skills translate at the NHL level. He may never get that, but he’s an RFA, so it wouldn’t hurt to qualify him and bring him back at about 1 year/1 million.

I’m not crazy about him being the #1 center on the team, but he can slot in on a lower line, say with Dubi and Cally, IF the team makes another move to get a true #1. That would pretty nice third line, actually.

  23. Why oh why did Torts break up the Girardi/Staal pairing? I will never understand that.

  24. Forwards for next year under contract:

    C: Drury, Dubinsky, Anisimov, Boyle
    LW: Avery, Brashear, Voros
    RW: Gaborik, Callahan

D: Rozsival, Redden, Gilroy, Del Zotto

Center is a logjam. But assuming Brashear isn’t playing, even if his cap hit remains, you got 2 wings on both the right and left side. Ok, so you slot Dubi over to LW and then you have 3 C, 3 LW, 2 RW. Not massive turnover but still 1/3 of the existing forwards.

  25. “Brashear isn’t playing, even if his cap hit remains, you got 2 wings on both the right and left side.”

If he clears waivers and nobody picks him up isn’t he off the cap?

  26. “April 13th, 2010 at 9:49 am
Seeing Brashear on that list makes me wanna cry.

Seeing Huggybear AND Voros as our leftwingers makes me want to kill someone. There is no way either of them crack the lineup. Maybe Voros to use as a human punching bag if someone gets hurt.

  27. I’d be ok in bringing back Girardi for another year if they got rid of Rozsival. And the only reason I hold out hope for them disposing of Rozsival is that his contract has reached the stage where he gets paid less than his cap hit so for teams looking to add a cap hit – and there are some that will need to hit the cap floor – he could be an option. Otherwise they’ll have to figure out what they’re doing with the deepest part of their propsect pool which is on D.

No Paul Martin, if Lou’s letting him go there’s probably a good reason. There’s a list of teams that the Rangers should avoid taking their FA’s and the Devils (Gomez, Driver) and Sabres (Drury, Kotalik) should be on it.

  28. LI RangerFan on

Noonan – unfortunately, no, Brashear is not off the cap. Not sure of the exact details, but there is a clause in the CBA regarding a player being over the age of 35 when he signs a contract and the cap hit if relegated…

  29. CTB- Prust is likely to come back. If they decide to keep one true enforcer, then Shelley is a good option. I wouldn’t count Brashear at all. That makes Voros 13th FW. If EC is back too, they only have 2 position left.

  30. That’s why I don’t think they should resign Prospal. He lost a step by the end of the season, his contract will count as above 35,and he will hinder the development of our young guys.

  31. Noonan, that’s the hitch with contracts when the player signs when he is 35 or older. Only way to remove their cap hit is via trade. Waiving, even retirement doesn’t remove the hit. That’s why people were scoffing at the Pronger deal for Philly because even if he retires he’ll still count against their cap.

  32. Damnit I’m sure you’re right about the age not that I think about it.

Sather was dumb enough to sign this worthless geezer whose technique of intimidating players is bearhugging them to the ground. While getting rid of a fan favorite (who could have lightened Cally’s workload on the PK). What a jerk.

  33. I like Prospal, and he is definitely one guy who really cared this year. He was a good Ranger this year. If we can not get a first line center this year, then I would bring him back for one more year. If we can, then it was very nice to know you Vinny. We will miss you, and your tan, and your funny expressions.

  34. Prospal needs to come back. Get it done for 3 years if you have to. I love this guy. He is a playmaker and still wants to play. I love his interviews too he is so funny.

Give Shelley and EC two year deals.

  35. But Prospal would be my #1 priority signing as of right now. The kidzz can learn a lot from him and he’s a team player.

  36. ilb, you referenced the forwards under contract. I understand that some of the FAs will be brought back. I honestly don’t think that anyone outside of Staal should come back with the caveat that none of Rozi/Redden/Drury are disposed of via trade/waivers/buy out, and then work to see if there’s a deal to be had with Chicago.

I agree that Prospal should not come back due to his history of inconsistency from year to to year and his age. And Christensen might be lightning in a bottle. I’d like to see Artie get a shot with Gaborik. I think out of the centers he has the best natural passing vision and stick skills.

  37. Voros is good as a scratch/black ace. I wouldn’t mind him staying around in the role. Now if he plays everyday, that is a problem.

  38. Anyone else see the story from the Daily News that Torts is back for next season? It was printed in the Star Ledger this morning (which of course does not have its own Rangers coverage any more). Surprised not to see it mentioned here yet.

  39. CT, I agree with you on bringing Girardi back. One year or two year deal max though, considering all the D in the system. He and Staal play well together and he doesn’t turn 25 til later this month.

  40. Prust and EC are RFA’s, if I’m not mistaken. I could see both of them being qualified by the team. Would LOVE to see Shelley back. He can enforce, he can actually play(as opposed to Huggybear) and he seems to be the positive/outgoing counterpoint to Drury in the room.

  41. I’ll take Prospal back, but only at a contract similar to what he signed for this year. With the understanding that he needs to play less minutes. I really think he wore down in the second half not only from age, but from the minutes Torts was giving him in the first half. I wouldn’t underestimate his knowledge of how to deal with Torts either.

  42. If they wanted to get rid of Prospal they should have traded him. Haggle him down to two years. Did you not see what he did for the Rangers this season?

Of course bring Girardi back. Don’t throw a fat wad of cash he hasn’t earned at him but bring him back.

If EC wants more than he thinks he’s worth he can walk. This was his last chance before becoming a permanent AHLer or going to the KHL.

Throw Shelley an even smaller bone.

  43. I would re-sign Prospal if he does a discount year again, i’d say sign Christy but he’s not a 1st line center and we have plenty of 2/3/4 line centers on this team already.
Save the money and go sign a center to play with Gabby (plekanec?).
I liked what i saw from Shelley and Prust and those guys will also come cheap.
We’ll need an extra $3m for Staal who we need to get signed up for 3-4 years or more if possible, i think he showed he is clearly the only top pair D-man we have this year.

Huggybear will count against the cap due to being over 35 when he signed the deal. Pronger won’t count on the cap if he retires as he signed it at age 34 – hence the uproar.

  44. I read the other posts talking about Francesa and the Rangers. He knows as much about the Rngers as Glen Sh**head does. Both of them are pompas….Please don’t even consider taking Vinny L with that contract. Just get a scoring winger like Kovalchuk and a stay at home defenceman like Exelby; let the kids from hartford play and go with it. If you can trade Rosi or Dredden and get back a bag of pucks, do it. The team needs to keep the younger players together. Get rid of our GM PERIOD.

  45. TheREALMikeyNJ on

Sorry we dont need another 7-10 mil dollar player on this team, and we cant afford it anyway

Christensen – if he stays cheap/ one year deal at 800-900K
Center 2nd or 3rd line with cally & Dubi. I like that

Shelley – def found a spot on this team as the enforcer and played damn good minutes with Artie and Prust – Resign – 1 year 800-900K

Prust – again and same as Shelly – resign 750-800K 1 year

Prospal – will be determined by his asking price. 1 year at 1.0 to 1.5 and I’d resign him. He might want to stay since he collected all that cash from Tampa and doesnt want to move his family again. if he wants more $$ and years, bye bye

Jokinen – no, bye bye, see ya!!

Brashear – Is gone one way or another. retires, stays in Hartford, whatever he will never be in blue again

    Lisin, Voros, Are question marks

Rosival can def be traded his value went up a little in the 2nd half of the season, and cap hit is goign down so he is moveable. Maybe him and a prospect for KAberle? you knwo how Sather lvoes dealing wiht his buddies

Redden – Onyl way he’s gone is by demotion, and I jsut know Sather is too much of a pussie to admit he’s wrong, so were screwed

Girardi: IF he asks for too much, let him walk. HE was decent but nothign special

    Staal – Resigned absolutely

  46. “I read the other posts talking about Francesa and the Rangers. He knows as much about the Rngers as Glen Sh**head does. Both of them are pompas….Please don’t even consider taking Vinny L with that contract. Just get a scoring winger like Kovalchuk and a stay at home defenceman like Exelby”

    1. Francesa is a joke and shouldn’t have a radio show.

    2. You say don’t give Vinny L that contract THEN go and sign Kovalchuk who is going to demand the most money in the NHL? Do you realize we still have Drury and Redden on our team and are in the midst of a salary crisis where we have to re-sign guys like Staal and Girardi? LOL

  47. CCCP, Does Jerome Iginla have a native American half brother named Gerome? SWEET. He can led them onto the ice with a yell of Geronimo.

  48. You know who would be a good next GM. Nolan Ryan. Can we steal him from the Texas Rangers and tell him that if anyone gets outta line, Torts and Jimmy D included, that he has full authority to throw a 90 mph fastball at their heads?

  49. CCCP, you are pardoned, pardner ;)

OH JEEZ. I just realized I spelled it wrong, too. *facepalm* It’s JArome, not JErome.

  50. I think Ryan probably knows more about building an NHL team in this day and age than Sather.

  51. Good morning all! I’m starting to come out of my coma.

I’m so glad I’m not alone in wanting Vinny back. Since many of you seem to agree with Brooks’ column, I’ll assume you also agree with me that Aves is part of the “core” and should stay, too!

Doesn’t baby Beuke look just like his daddy!

Wade Redden is tied with his long time teammate Daniel Alfredsson for the most playoff games played (among active players) with 101 w/o winning a Cup. Who hold the all time record for most playoff games w/o Cup?

I just heard it on NHL Network. :P

  53. noonan, I said sign Kovalchuk if we could move Rosi and or Dredden….also said I don’t want Vinny L would rather have Kovalchuk who is better player and younger to take pressure off Gabby. 1 front line scorer and 1 solid physical defenceman, thats it. If you can move Drury then great otherwise you are looking at the same season for the next 2 years of fighting for 8th place

  54. Mama, I’d agree about Aves, but mostly because no one else wants him or his contract. Don’t get me wrong, I like Aves and I like his game when it’s on. But like most of the rest of the team, he needs to play that way consistently. Torts also needs to give him a longer leash, IMO. He’s a good third liner that can move up when needed.

Would LOVE to see them draft baby Beuke.

  55. “noonan, I said sign Kovalchuk if we could move Rosi and or Dredden….”

That’s not happening. If it does, sure. When pigs fly.

“also said I don’t want Vinny L would rather have Kovalchuk who is better player and younger to take pressure off Gabby.”

Hey I’d rather have Kovy over VinnyL but there is this thing called cap space.

  56. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

    Morning Guys and Carpy!

lots of good posts so far this morning.

OneCup, if what you said wasn’t so true, it would be hilarious. cw has a good point too, stay the course (unless you can totally get rid of Redden and Rozsi), no hugeass contracts to anyone from the outside, let the kids get another year or two under their belts, they are free of Drury. This constant change of 5+ guys every off season is not freakin working. there is no continuity. Be a man, get rid of the mistakes that you can ANY way you can.

  57. I have been a proponent of a 2 year plan, but don’t confuse that with keeping young guys who are useless. P.A., and Christensen are not good. I thought Christensen was a keeper, but he is not up for the big moment. That was a big moment Sunday in Philly and E.C. completely wet his pants. Same for P.A. who almost blew the only thing he can really do: The Shootout.

Gabby thrives with Prospal as his center. Torts screwed that up. Vinny was consistent. Not sensational, but he played better than most in the big spots. I would even give Prospal a two year deal if it was reasonable $$$$.

  58. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

i’m sure you guys already know, but it seems the Redden for Souray thing might be picking up steam again.

  59. c’mon kids!! It’s Dale Hunter with 186 playoff games played w/o winning Stanley Cup! All time NHL record. :P

  60. LOL @ Sundin. I’ve heard the Souray thing too and as I said wouldn’t mind it. It’d get Redden outa of here free up a little money and SOuray would be hurt so often that we could let another kid get some experience on the blueline

  61. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

love the daily news keep’em dump’em… gabby, cally, staal, mdz with 95% keep Hank with 93% and Prust with 91%.

  62. Come on guys, Dru is upset, he is angry. He won’t even be watching the playoffs he is so mad.

  63. “I would even give Prospal a two year deal if it was reasonable $$$$.”

Of course. He’s going to want three but haggle him down to two at a decent price. He earned it.

58 points and a PLUS 8 on the Rangers. Can you name another player aside from Gaborik with closer stats? You can’t.

  64. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

lmao, 6% of the voters want to KEEP SATHER!!! lmao thats funny stuff right there

  65. Anyone that doesn’t want Prospal back:

    1. You’re not a fan

    2. Don’t talk to me

  66. If by “keep Sather” they mean let him stay so they’ll know which address to send a box of exploding cigars…well then.

  67. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

did brooksie actually call sather one of the most good hearted people in the game?

“There is no reason on Earth that Sather, who is one of the truly good-hearted people in the game,”

    why yes, yes he did!!!

  68. James G, Never really liked Souray as a player. Can’t explain why either. How many years does Souray have left on his deal? If it’s two, then I’d do the deal, reluctantly. Still think they best way is just to bury Redden in Hartford, once Sather is ‘retired’.

And are you making fun of my Aunt Bunny? Grrr. (being srs here, I actually have an Aunt Bunny, no lie)

  69. AGrossRecord #NYRangers Chris Drury on playoffs: “It’ll be awful. I have no plans to watch it.”

  70. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

lmao Nor! I thought Nasty had gotten Dru and Nancy Drew mixed up for a moment!

  71. I believe Souray has something like 2 years at a little over 4 million a year left on his deal with Edmonton. Idk I just can’t see them demoting Redden with his salary what it is. Even though he played Sunday like he’s in an old timer’s game.

Aunt Bunny is a skit from Eddie Murphy delirious btw..I’d never wish anyone’s aunt to fall down stairs :)

  72. I can see how he could confuse him with Nancy Drew since it’s a mystery how he earns all that $. lol

  73. LOL Per Gross: “Wade Redden knows he has a lot to prove to brass. Not happy with his season.”

LOL. Is this a post from the end of last season, or this season?

  74. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

sorry Stan, just saw your comment. I am not surprised. I truly think that Torts gets half a season with whatever new fangled roster Yeti gives him this summer. The more i think about CW’s plan, the more i like it, and the more you know it won’t happen. They will try to make some kind of splash, which, if past indicators are correct(lol) will be the WRONG kind. the constant turnover year after year makes it hard for a team to ‘gell’ because there are always 5 or 6 new guys who have to get acclimated.

  75. Linda, I think you are right about the birth certificate. He needs to just bow out. Go coach pee wee or something. Kids league or Herman for all I care.

  76. on Souray Mickey- 2 years left at 4.5 million (5.4 mil cap hit) and his nmc expired this season. stats in 3 seasons with EDM

    2007-08 Edmonton Oilers NHL 26 3 7 10
    2008-09 Edmonton Oilers NHL 81 23 30 53
    2009-10 Edmonton Oilers NHL 37 4 9 13

  77. Drury should be getting used to figuring out what else he’s doing with his spring.

Teams that Drury has been on the past couple of years:

06/07 Buffalo: lost in conference finals to OTT
07/08 Rangers: lost in 2nd round to PIT
08/09 Rangers: lost in 1st round to WSH
    09/10 Rangers: missed playoffs

  78. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

CT, maybe he should be put out to pasture also, along with redden and rozsi ;-)

Nasty, agree with you completely. I think i’ve been calling for his retirement since last season!

  79. Remember when Redden was described to us as a “Good” skater. And that he had such a silky glide. Ha. Silky Glide sounds more like a tampon slogan than how you describe a skater. Hell, I don’t want any of my players to glide anywhere.

  80. James G, Ehhh, if it’s only 2 years, then yeah, I’d do the deal.

Ohhh, got it now. I’ll have to check out that skit, really liked Eddie Murphy at one point. Thanks :)

ABSOLUTELY agree with this, Linda. They need to NOT turn over 3/4ths of the roster again.

  85. cw – I also don’t understand the love for Christensen other than the fact that they don’t pay him much. He’s horrible.

No to Souray. The Rangers have their Souray and his name is Del Zotto. Souray will spend most of his time on IR. That is just the type of signing that keeps the team in mediocrity.

The 7% that has voted to dump Henrik must either be Devils or Islanders fans or else on drugs.

I don’t agree with Brooks a whole lot, but I do agree that there can’t be a massive turnover of personnel. They tried that this season and where did it get them? Now, if they had a real GM getting the players, then maybe.

  86. From Gross and Everlast:

#NYRangers Aaron Voros: “I can play. I signed to be a player.” Played last 4 games with hurt left knee (MCL).

  87. I am no genius. 2 years makes sense because it gives the NYR time to get Rozi and Drury off the books.

But is there not a better time than RIGHT NOW to let Sather go? I mean any owner with any sense has to see where the NYR are right now. Torts has either 2-3 years to go on his deal, and 2 of the 3 worst contracts ever signed will expire. NOW is the time to sign a new GM and give him 2 years to put together a great team around Henke.

  88. Re: Souray

If he can be swapped for Redden you have to do it. Souray has the one thing that 90% of the Rangers lack: BALLS.

That personality is sorely lacking at MSG.

And Id still want to see Heikinen back in traingin camp and give him a shot
He’s a big tough D man that htis everything

  90. There are a lot of “Good guys” on our hockey team. But just because they are “good guys” doesn’t mean that they should make up our club. You need what is best, and if saying goodbye to some of them is what has to happen, then it has to happen.

  91. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

Mikey, i had read earlier in the season that he may go back if he didnt get a chance to play. that’s too bad. he should have been given a better shot. But no, why carry seven d? oy carumba

  92. Interesting, yet not surprising that Voros played the last few games with a hurt knee. I thought he done for the year after that take down by the ref.

Will be really interesting to hear what Cally says about his knee now that he doesn’t have to cover up and lie about it.

  93. Charlie, that works for me. I can’t imagine that Redden would dream of trying to get another NHL contract after this one.

Are Sather and Tortorella going to grace us with interviews, or do they think the season re-cap is none of our business?

  111. TheREALMikeyNJ on

So just a quick rundown for reference:
These are players signed for next season:

Forwards: Gabby, Drury, Cally, Avery, Dubi, Voros, Artie, Boyle
Defense: Redden, Rosival, Del Z, Gilroy
    Goal: Hank

    Total: 13 Players
    (I’m not including hartford Players)

    Definite Resignings: Marc Staal
Possible Resignings: Prospal, Shelley, Prust, Auld, Girardi
Possible Demotions or Trades: Rosival, Voros, Boyle, Dubinsky, Redden, Gilroy.

So basically the core of the team, who are more than 95% to 100% coming back next season are the following:

Forwards: Drury, Gabby, Cally, Avery, Artie & Dubinsky (if not traded)Boyle & Voros(but figure he’ll be traded or sent to Hartford)
    Goal: Hank
Defense: Del Z, Staal (once resigned)Gilroy, Rosival & Redden (Unless Sather can trade him casue he aint getting demoted)

    13 Players total
Out of which Voros, Boyle, Redden & Rosival are all maybes for next season

That leaves us with 9 absolute will return players

No roster turn over my ass!!
More than half the team will be new players unless.

If it were me, the players back next season would be:

Drury, Cally, Gabby, Artie, Dubi, Shelley, Prust, Prospal (for cheap)
    Staal, Del Z, Gilory

No mercenaries, no big time contracts.

Crease clearing Dman, Puck moving Dman, Some decent wingers, and a center for Gabby

    Oh and Fire Glen Sather!!!

Kotex …tampons..????? OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! If our team made it , we would be talking Ovechkin, now were just talking tampons.

Another reason we lost this year is because Piggins could not score and he brought the team down. Players were trying to set him up and All we got was Gaborik scoring. Even when Gaborik was scoring , everyone is like….I want someone else to score …WAAAAWAAAAAA WAAAA like little babies.

Torts had to deal with Avery’s antics,Voros dumb penalties, Hanks soft goals,Brashear useless play, lack luster Redden who got benched, He had Rozi acting like a dummy ,Drury was invisable and got some flack from the coach, Vally was awful and Torts freaked again,Kotaleek wasnt hitting the net and Torts couldnt stand it. Torts even had a struggling Gaborik that he benched!! Dubinsky was label , not too bright by torts for missing the start.Torts even had issues with reporters.

Alot of crap went on this year and Torts had to deal with it all …guy must have nerves of steel by now.

  114. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " Locker clean out time !!! " … says Greg L. on

Blond bimbos…well thats a good start!!!

  115. Great Prust Twitter quote. TBH I thought of him as little more as a bit piece in the jOinkinen trade. Who’d have thought he’d turn out more valuable to the team than Pig-Nose? Same with Shelley. I remember a lotta WTF’s going around when Sather picked him up. He has a good chance of being resigned as well, IMO.

The future’s really not as bad as people are making it out to be. We have a chance to make a good pick, the kids are doing well ( which reminds me, I need to check for a Stepan update). Now if only someone would push Cigar out his fishing boat…..

  116. Ok folks, GREAT NEWS: I have from a good and reliable source that works with MSG (Madison Square Garden) that Mr. James Dolan gave Mr. Glen Sather until tomorrow Wednesday April 14 at midnight to either resign or to be FIRED. Also, along those lines, if Mr. Sather does either of the two, Jim Shoenfeld will be the new NY Rangers coach with Mark Messier as our NEW GM

per some dude on fb! lol

  121. Puck Control on

laughable. Exelby is not even good enough to play regularly with the lowly Leafs. he cannot handle the puck or pass. stay at home? that is what is wrong with the rangers. they have no offensive ability from the backend. their dmen now are mostly stay at home types ,and thus when the playoffs start, they stay at home. get it?

people are clueless if they can’t see that puck control is the rangers problem. if your players, starting from the d, are just banging the puck up the wall, and dumping the puck, they are going to get badly outplayed and outshot like they did. look at the better teams approach. it is puck control. that means all 5 guys involved, not just pass to the forward and then become a spectator

  122. Younger? That’s the line from the Rangers 6 years ago. That’s his excuse? Well, Lundqvist isn’t getting any younger — might be nice to try winning, how about that concept?

  123. On second thought, maybe some botox for Torts might be good — he couldn’t make his irate facial expressions, and he’d look “younger” too.

  124. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

no way should he get botox! i love seeing his anger face, it’s classic! i even have a pic i make as my wallpaper on the computer from time to time, thanks to, i believe it was jgp!!

he will show his hockey ignorance, which is just barely better than that fat hockey hater, mike francesa

  131. puck control

    You are singing my song.

It’s the brain dead messy passing and puck handling skills that the Rangers have displayed for the past 3 years now. No one seems to know how to corral a hot pass ( which is not the type they deliver), but even the softies bounce off their blades. They are strictly a dump and coast club, and that’s one of the reasons why none of them post at the crease ( except the new guys). Their passing is long range butterflys that are oft intercepted by the opposition…and then they can’t seem to gin up enough ardor to throw hard slap shots from the blue line even when they have ample time. Coaching coaching coaching…non existent

  132. I saw Roger Waters on the pro’s and con’s of hitchhiking tour. 1st half all that album 2nd half all Floyd with Eric Clalpton playing guitar simply stunning. Then I saw him about 3yrs ago in the Garden excellent again, getting a little long in the tooth though. Ego always in his way what a shame. Gilmore is great but it’s not Floyd without Roger.

  133. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

how does NHLLive have people on there who know absolutely less about hockey than i do about physics??

  134. Could have sworn Hank is a top guy, and that he showed up in Philly.

Torts seems to confuse, or perhaps conflate, passion with anger.

  135. Linda says FIRE SATHER!!!! on

a hot pass!! it’s been a long time since anyone on this team delivered or received one of those, on the ice at least.

  136. Uh, how much younger do they want to get? Cally, Dubi, Staal, DZ, Girardi, Gilroy are all pretty young.

Gaborik and Lundqvist are under 30, Avery just turned 30.

The Bust-a-teers (R&R and Pizza Boy) are over 30.

If they get too much younger they will have to get parent’s permissions forms to let the kids stay out late on a school night.

  137. Torts wants to get younger? How much younger could this team get? I thought they were one of the youngest teams in the league.
