NHL DRAFT DRAWING TO BE CONDUCTED TUESDAY
NEW YORK (April 12, 2010)—The National Hockey League Draft Drawing, a weighted system to determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, will take place Tuesday, April 13, at 8 p.m. ET.
The League, in cooperation with TSN, will unveil the results of the Draft Drawing live during a 30-minute program, 2010 LG NHL® Draft Lottery—produced and televised by TSN in Canada. The special presentation will also be simulcast on VERSUS and streamed live on NHL.com in the U.S.
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly will be live in TSN’s studio to reveal the order of selection for the top picks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. The Draft Drawing involves Clubs that do not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, or the Clubs that acquired the first-round drafting positions of those non-playoff clubs.
Per NHL rules, the Club selected in the Draft Drawing may not move up more than four positions in the draft order. Thus, the only Clubs with the opportunity to receive the first overall selection are the five teams with the lowest regular-season point totals, or the Clubs that acquired an eligible Club’s first-round draft pick. No club will move down more than one position as a result of the Draft Drawing.

It’s tough to miss the playoffs on the results of a shootout, but after getting outshot 47-27, it’s not like the Rangers can claim they deserved a better fate in Sunday’s must-win game at Philadelphia. It’s such a strangely mismatched roster, with overpaid underperforming veterans on one side and improving young players on the other and the Blueshirts haven’t quite figured out how to make that work. Having fewer overpaid underperformers is, generally, a good start.

Of all of the free agents this year, Tomas Plekanec might be the only forward the Rangers should go for. He has good production and should be relatively cheap. As long as the price is right, I would do it. A steady and physical presence on D is up in the air. Those guys seem to come to NY and falter, so I am not sure about that signing.

Normally I’d take what Brooks says with a tremendous grain of salt, and although he’s pointing out things the hardcore fans already know, he’s not that wrong with most of his assessments. Now there’s some names of his list of core players that I think are somewhat marginal but at some point the turnover needs to stop.

orr, greg- i do like you both and are cool peeps. i just dont get why you can blame hank on the shootout. he was awesome in the game!! he was dead tired because they spent nearly the entire game in our end pressuring us, and forcing him to make save after save after save!! the team sucked in front of him. i know i have been hard at times on him during the season but the last few weeks and even months, he has ben tremendously tremdous and olli and ec shouldve scored on bouch-league!!! they blew it!! our ahler for life scored, but 5 million dollar nostrildamus couldnt even atrtempt a simple deke!! and the whole game only shelly and prust,AA had chances!! one maybe 2 nice shots from gabby and duby all game long. and dz too. nothing much else.
Good article by Brooks today. Especially agreed with tha notion of not turning over 3/4ths of the roster for the third sraight year. That has really hurt this team.
CTB- if you look carefully at our FWs under the contract for the next year, exreme makeover isn’t even possible. The decision should be made on 1st line center at the moment. If they don’t go for one, then we will have just a little better production next year, providing that Callahan, Dubinsky and AA score more. Could be enough to get us into playoffs. May not be a bad idea. The available centers are either too expensive or on decline.

CT – i agree. I read Brooksie’s article earlier and i would agree with his list apart from PAP and Christensen. I don’t imagine we’ll be seeing any of Stepan, Kreider or McDonut for 2-3 years unless they really tear it up in the juniors or AHL.
I think our entire offseason depends on whether we can remove Redden and/or Roszival from the roster and whether our GM remains in place.

All of you folks who think Girardi should be rehired ( including Brooks)are whistling by the graveyard. This guy has repeatedly shown himself to be a stroller. I think that he’s been watching too many Redden moves). He only puts out in sports( and very few ofthem at that.) He’d join wholeheartedly, my list for “detachables” But DON’T kick out the kids. I still can’t get over it. Jokinen for the shoot out and Artesimov ( among others) on the bench, and Lisin not even dressed. Yeah he’s a great tactician. I mentioned in a previous post, the NYR should have a 2 year plan. Don’t sign any crazy UFA’s fill the spots with guys from Hartford. Only sign UFA’s that we need to fill holes (none for more than 2 years). Drury and Rozi expire then, THAT is when the Rangers can make a serious move to be contenders.

ilb, Larry and Torts are BFF’s. Their “tiff” this year was all an act to try and get the team motivated and playing better.

I think Girardi is too young to give up on (25), he is not really due much of a raise (10%?) and if we can rid us of the 2 R’s he plays well when partnered with Staal. He’s been OK this year (bad at times), but i think the constant changing of partners and playing too much with Redden has caused his development to level off.
I’m really hoping every morning i open IE now to see the NYR headlines : “Sather fired/retires after Rangers miss playoffs again” ....i live in hope!
UKRanger, I have no problem with them keeping Christensen. He seemed to have some chemistry with Gabby and has a higher skill set than some of the other players on the roster. I just think he hasn’t quite figured out how to make his skills translate at the NHL level. He may never get that, but he’s an RFA, so it wouldn’t hurt to qualify him and bring him back at about 1 year/1 million.
I’m not crazy about him being the #1 center on the team, but he can slot in on a lower line, say with Dubi and Cally, IF the team makes another move to get a true #1. That would pretty nice third line, actually.
Why oh why did Torts break up the Girardi/Staal pairing? I will never understand that.

Center is a logjam. But assuming Brashear isn’t playing, even if his cap hit remains, you got 2 wings on both the right and left side. Ok, so you slot Dubi over to LW and then you have 3 C, 3 LW, 2 RW. Not massive turnover but still 1/3 of the existing forwards.
Seeing Brashear on that list makes me wanna cry.

Seeing Huggybear AND Voros as our leftwingers makes me want to kill someone. There is no way either of them crack the lineup. Maybe Voros to use as a human punching bag if someone gets hurt.
I’d be ok in bringing back Girardi for another year if they got rid of Rozsival. And the only reason I hold out hope for them disposing of Rozsival is that his contract has reached the stage where he gets paid less than his cap hit so for teams looking to add a cap hit – and there are some that will need to hit the cap floor – he could be an option. Otherwise they’ll have to figure out what they’re doing with the deepest part of their propsect pool which is on D.
No Paul Martin, if Lou’s letting him go there’s probably a good reason. There’s a list of teams that the Rangers should avoid taking their FA’s and the Devils (Gomez, Driver) and Sabres (Drury, Kotalik) should be on it.
Noonan – unfortunately, no, Brashear is not off the cap. Not sure of the exact details, but there is a clause in the CBA regarding a player being over the age of 35 when he signs a contract and the cap hit if relegated…
CTB- Prust is likely to come back. If they decide to keep one true enforcer, then Shelley is a good option. I wouldn’t count Brashear at all. That makes Voros 13th FW. If EC is back too, they only have 2 position left.
That’s why I don’t think they should resign Prospal. He lost a step by the end of the season, his contract will count as above 35,and he will hinder the development of our young guys.
Noonan, that’s the hitch with contracts when the player signs when he is 35 or older. Only way to remove their cap hit is via trade. Waiving, even retirement doesn’t remove the hit. That’s why people were scoffing at the Pronger deal for Philly because even if he retires he’ll still count against their cap.

I like Prospal, and he is definitely one guy who really cared this year. He was a good Ranger this year. If we can not get a first line center this year, then I would bring him back for one more year. If we can, then it was very nice to know you Vinny. We will miss you, and your tan, and your funny expressions.
Prospal needs to come back. Get it done for 3 years if you have to. I love this guy. He is a playmaker and still wants to play. I love his interviews too he is so funny.
Give Shelley and EC two year deals.
But Prospal would be my #1 priority signing as of right now. The kidzz can learn a lot from him and he’s a team player.
ilb, you referenced the forwards under contract. I understand that some of the FAs will be brought back. I honestly don’t think that anyone outside of Staal should come back with the caveat that none of Rozi/Redden/Drury are disposed of via trade/waivers/buy out, and then work to see if there’s a deal to be had with Chicago.
I agree that Prospal should not come back due to his history of inconsistency from year to to year and his age. And Christensen might be lightning in a bottle. I’d like to see Artie get a shot with Gaborik. I think out of the centers he has the best natural passing vision and stick skills.
Voros is good as a scratch/black ace. I wouldn’t mind him staying around in the role. Now if he plays everyday, that is a problem.
Anyone else see the story from the Daily News that Torts is back for next season? It was printed in the Star Ledger this morning (which of course does not have its own Rangers coverage any more). Surprised not to see it mentioned here yet.
CT, I agree with you on bringing Girardi back. One year or two year deal max though, considering all the D in the system. He and Staal play well together and he doesn’t turn 25 til later this month.

I’ll take Prospal back, but only at a contract similar to what he signed for this year. With the understanding that he needs to play less minutes. I really think he wore down in the second half not only from age, but from the minutes Torts was giving him in the first half. I wouldn’t underestimate his knowledge of how to deal with Torts either.

If you can trade Rosi or Dredden and get back a bag of pucks, do it. The team needs to keep the younger players together. Get rid of our GM PERIOD.

Mama, I’d agree about Aves, but mostly because no one else wants him or his contract. Don’t get me wrong, I like Aves and I like his game when it’s on. But like most of the rest of the team, he needs to play that way consistently. Torts also needs to give him a longer leash, IMO. He’s a good third liner that can move up when needed.

OneCup, if what you said wasn’t so true, it would be hilarious. cw has a good point too, stay the course (unless you can totally get rid of Redden and Rozsi), no hugeass contracts to anyone from the outside, let the kids get another year or two under their belts, they are free of Drury. This constant change of 5+ guys every off season is not freakin working. there is no continuity. Be a man, get rid of the mistakes that you can ANY way you can.

I have been a proponent of a 2 year plan, but don’t confuse that with keeping young guys who are useless. P.A., and Christensen are not good. I thought Christensen was a keeper, but he is not up for the big moment. That was a big moment Sunday in Philly and E.C. completely wet his pants. Same for P.A. who almost blew the only thing he can really do: The Shootout.
Gabby thrives with Prospal as his center. Torts screwed that up. Vinny was consistent. Not sensational, but he played better than most in the big spots. I would even give Prospal a two year deal if it was reasonable $$$$.
i’m sure you guys already know,but it seems the Redden for Souray thing might be picking up steam again.

sorry Stan, just saw your comment. I am not surprised. I truly think that Torts gets half a season with whatever new fangled roster Yeti gives him this summer. The more i think about CW’s plan,the more i like it, and the more you know it won’t happen. They will try to make some kind of splash, which, if past indicators are correct(lol) will be the WRONG kind. the constant turnover year after year makes it hard for a team to ‘gell’ because there are always 5 or 6 new guys who have to get acclimated.

No to Souray. The Rangers have their Souray and his name is Del Zotto. Souray will spend most of his time on IR. That is just the type of signing that keeps the team in mediocrity.

I am no genius. 2 years makes sense because it gives the NYR time to get Rozi and Drury off the books.
But is there not a better time than RIGHT NOW to let Sather go? I mean any owner with any sense has to see where the NYR are right now. Torts has either 2-3 years to go on his deal, and 2 of the 3 worst contracts ever signed will expire. NOW is the time to sign a new GM and give him 2 years to put together a great team around Henke.

There are a lot of “Good guys” on our hockey team. But just because they are “good guys” doesn’t mean that they should make up our club. You need what is best, and if saying goodbye to some of them is what has to happen, then it has to happen.

So basically the core of the team, who are more than 95% to 100% coming back next season are the following:
Forwards: Drury, Gabby, Cally, Avery, Artie & Dubinsky (if not traded)Boyle & Voros(but figure he’ll be traded or sent to Hartford)
Goal: Hank
Defense: Del Z, Staal (once resigned)Gilroy, Rosival & Redden (Unless Sather can trade him casue he aint getting demoted)
13 Players total
Out of which Voros, Boyle, Redden & Rosival are all maybes for next season
That leaves us with 9 absolute will return players
No roster turn over my ass!!
More than half the team will be new players unless.
If it were me, the players back next season would be:
Drury, Cally, Gabby, Artie, Dubi, Shelley, Prust, Prospal (for cheap)
Staal, Del Z, Gilory
Hank
USE the cap space to BUILD A SOLID TEAM WITH A CONCEPT
No mercenaries, no big time contracts.

Another reason we lost this year is because Piggins could not score and he brought the team down. Players were trying to set him up and All we got was Gaborik scoring. Even when Gaborik was scoring , everyone is like….I want someone else to score …WAAAAWAAAAAA WAAAA like little babies.
Torts had to deal with Avery’s antics,Voros dumb penalties, Hanks soft goals,Brashear useless play, lack luster Redden who got benched, He had Rozi acting like a dummy ,Drury was invisable and got some flack from the coach, Vally was awful and Torts freaked again,Kotaleek wasnt hitting the net and Torts couldnt stand it. Torts even had a struggling Gaborik that he benched!! Dubinsky was label , not too bright by torts for missing the start.Torts even had issues with reporters.
Alot of crap went on this year and Torts had to deal with it all …guy must have nerves of steel by now.

people are clueless if they can’t see that puck control is the rangers problem. if your players, starting from the d, are just banging the puck up the wall, and dumping the puck, they are going to get badly outplayed and outshot like they did. look at the better teams approach. it is puck control. that means all 5 guys involved, not just pass to the forward and then become a spectator

It’s the brain dead messy passing and puck handling skills that the Rangers have displayed for the past 3 years now. No one seems to know how to corral a hot pass ( which is not the type they deliver), but even the softies bounce off their blades. They are strictly a dump and coast club, and that’s one of the reasons why none of them post at the crease ( except the new guys). Their passing is long range butterflys that are oft intercepted by the opposition…and then they can’t seem to gin up enough ardor to throw hard slap shots from the blue line even when they have ample time. Coaching coaching coaching…non existent
I saw Roger Waters on the pro’s and con’s of hitchhiking tour. 1st half all that album 2nd half all Floyd with Eric Clalpton playing guitar simply stunning. Then I saw him about 3yrs ago in the Garden excellent again, getting a little long in the tooth though. Ego always in his way what a shame. Gilmore is great but it’s not Floyd without Roger.
