Today’s line-up (updated, part 2)

537

Good morning Sally and all! Here’s your game line-up for today, featuring two of your New York Rangers. Should have been three, but Gabby’s still sidelined, now for three games as per Gross. I feel bad he’s missing the Olympics, but not so bad if he’s properly healed by the break’s end, and at least he’s not missing any Ranger games.
Olli takes on Belarus at 3 p.m. on USA.
Hank takes on Germany at 7:30 on CNBC.
Slovaks v. Czechs at midnight on CNBC.

Some side tidbits:
• According to nhl.com, Parise is USA’s “secret weapon.” Your thoughts?
• Here’s an interview with AO after yesterday’s men’s Russian root.
• And a recap of the women’s eventual mercy on Russia.

And finally, what is hopefully the last word on that MSG “mariage proposal,” from Gross:

“A third source has shed some more light on the much-talked-about fake marriage proposal during the Rangers 5-2 win over the Lightning on Sunday. The third source confirmed what the first two sources said Sunday; that it was a hoax. However, the third source said today that the “couple,” “Nick and Melissa” were actually actors hired from an agency and that it was meant as in-game entertainment. So the Rangers and the Madison Square Garden people knew all about this, which, to be fair, is different from what I heard Sunday. At first I was told they were a real-life couple who decided to do this on their own to generate some publicity for themselves and that the Rangers and the Garden did not know about it.

By now, almost everybody has seen the video of the “Blueshirt Bride” proposal from “Nick,” with “Melissa” covering her mouth, looking somewhat angrily at “Nick” and then storming out with “Nick” following. It’s actually on The Huffington Post sports page with a link to this blog.

Essentially, this is just something that got out of hand once the Lightning television crew actually put some of the proposal on their broadcast of the game, which is how it got up on YouTube so quickly. Having been there, it was funny and it did get the Garden crowd buzzing. But there might be some Garden officials second-guessing themselves at this point.”

Post Finland Update

Here’s the Hank v. Germany preview from nhl.com. NHL players per team: Germany 7; Sweden 19.

Everyone can go back to using only one A per word now when needed.

Post Hank Update

I like the Rangers headline best, “A Royal Shutout,” with a refer to the King. Nhl.com has to be unbiased I guess, but they offered “Stifling Swedes.”

Anyway, here’s the links to their stories. Rangers, and nhl.com

See you all tomorrow.

  1. Wow this place is dead during the Olympics!

Can’t wait for that Slovak/Czech game tonight to see Jagr!

  2. Jagr tonight! I miss the big guy :(

Imagine what this team would look like with Jagr AND Gaborik. (daydreams)

  3. to get your mind off the rangers. the building hasnt been that loud at all this season. (excluding the blue jackets game…)

  4. That US women’s game was really embarrassing. Russia starts a 16-year-old kid in net and EVERYTHING goes in (did I say EVERYTHING?).

It’s time to put women’s hockey on hiatus for awhile until the rest of the world either catches up or gives up.

  5. A lot of the “effort” displayed by the Rangers during some games has been a hoax as well so what’s the big deal.

  6. Curling is on the ice?

It’ll get busy later with some hockey in a few hours. Until then, maybe it’s time to improve our economy. Go do some work, everyone. That includes Izzy. Time to roll some crepes.

  7. Besides Lundqvist, who here is not going to root for *Jaromir*, even rather than Gabby in these Olympics.

  8. The fake marriage proposal was awful… The chick was such a bad actor, and apparently the couple were a bunch of “actors”

Whatever! Man, I think I have the flu again (second time in less than 2 months) and therefore won’t be able to stay up till after midnight to catch all of the czech/slovakia game =[

  9. Wicky, he was skating ok and delivered a couple pretty mean hits.

Did you get my message in your inbox on FB, by the way?

  10. LOL @ Johnny LaRue – “A lot of the *effort displayed by the Rangers* during some games *has been a hoax* as well so what’s the big deal.” Hahahaha…

    Excellent point…

  11. Hmm…I’ll have to convince the GF to watch Hank tonight…I tried staying up for Russia last night and passed out before the women’s game was over.

Hopefully I’ll stay awake for the Czech/Slovakia game…I’m really pumped for that…too bad Gabby won’t be in.

  12. “According to nhl.com, Parise is USA’s “secret weapon.” Your thoughts?”

and drury + cally are playing on the fourth line…what does that say about the NYR?

  13. Back from getting ashed and lunched… and working.

mightymatt, I have NO problems with Cally and Dru on the 4th line for Team USA. Dru’s been on teh 4th line a few times for the Rangers this year. And ok, we’ve beaten to death what the issues/problems are with him, so not going there. As for Cally- he’d be a really good 3rd liner on a very good NHL team, but with the Rangers lack of depth/players/etc, he’s been playing up a line or two. On Team USA, he’s a *perfect* 4th liner. Energy guy, PKer, hard on the forecheck, willing to bang. Just what a 4th liner on a team of “all stars” should be. Plus, I have no problem with him getting reduced minutes for Team USA, considering all the minutes he gets for the Rangers.

  14. I guess fake marriage proposals, noise meters, human puck races, and other assorted nonsense is what passes for entertainment at the Garden these days since there hasn’t been an entertaining product on the ice in 13 years.

  15. Hank got his gold, so id rather have Cally get his, along with the rest of Team USA.

That being said, if Hank comes back to NYR and plays like he did when he came back from Torino, then i would be all for that.

Im still hoping to tank. Id hate it if NYR were buyers, which seems like the route that Slats will take. Shame.

  16. I hear ya, NYR….after all he’s been through this season he deserves something!

I loved his answer in an interview I saw a while ago, a fan asked him which he’d rather have, a gold medal or the Cup…..he said the Cup.

  17. I never go for Team USA as a rule, but it’s hard for me to dislike a team that includes boys from Rochester, Buffalo & Ithaca.

That said, I’m rooting for Finland. They have the COOLEST names.

  18. Saally – LOL…. completely agree that Finnish names ARE the coolest… Used to work for a company that partnered with Nokia and the people’s names were the best.

  19. I too am making my name Finnish for the olympics, though I’m taking a bit of a different route.

They have nice colors as well.

  20. I wonder what Slats is doing? Is he on vacation from his normal vacations? Is that called double secret vacation?

    Just wondering………

  21. Avery and Voros are on vacation apparently.

Voros tweeted that him and Avery were abroad working on their “wrist shots” but Avery is tweeting about islands lol

  22. The marriage proposal was supposed to be entertainment? Is that because the hockey game was too boring and they needed to spice it up a little?

What a stupid idea. I’ll bet Sather thought that one up.

  23. CHARLIE

The game was boring. The crowd was pretty much dead where i was, and i was yawning non stop. That scene actually woke me up.

Too bad it was fake. Im sure they weren’t even Ranger fans. So many bandwagoners go to the game, it’s sickening.

  24. Actually, the hoax marriage proposal was done so Sam could chime in:

“Should have had Chris Drury pop the question…In a clutch moment, he never misses”

  25. Voros34- Abroad with SeanAveryDotCom working on our wristshots for the next week… about 21 hours ago from UberTwitter

seanaverydotcom- Going to see Bobby M in his homeland 11:35 AM Feb 15th from UberTwitter

seanaverydotcom- The jungle is hot tomorrow night says the locals about 17 hours ago from UberTwitter

  26. Lol, I was in 315…the place was dead for the 1st…buzzing for the 2nd and dead again in the third

  27. TR, the whole team went? Jeez, you’d think they’d want to get away from each other for a little while.

  28. Izzy Mandlebaum on

123rd birthday to the famous Finnish composer, Leevi Madetoja

    I think he’s a de-composer….

  29. SCX, it’s a combination of fanta and sunkist and I think the story had something to do with Linda and MAKO reading each others minds in that creepy way they do…

  30. @MickeyM you sort of stated exactly what I meant by my comment. No problems with either of those players playing on the 3’d or fourth line, but that just emphasizes how desperately the Rangers need some first and second line talent.

  31. Izzy would have been paapered on the nose, but he corrected himself, so he can still play. (and I assume the “ire” was over calling Fankiist 35, not being humorous about the esteemed but way-to-old-be-upset composer :)

  32. cccp- why come the ukraine isnt in the olympics? did latvia beat thenm out? what hl’ers besides antropov are from ukraine? vanek is austrian right? hard to believe austria or ukraine couldnt get in over latvia. i mean cmon latvia has a player named ants in pants or hanky pants

  33. Lev-sson Etienovich Rabinowitz on

do you guys know why they stopped giving out those rally towels in the playoffs?

  34. They only stopped for that one game last year. Since it turned out to be a disaster of a loss, they distributed the towels for the next game…

  35. Update with Hank v. Germany preview link above. If I don’t pass out later, I’ll see ya later. If I do, I’ll see ya for the TR v. Mandlebaum first comment showdown tomorrow. Enjoy!

  36. Lev-sson Etienovich Rabinowitz on

noooooooooooo JR you just took away all the respect i gathered for you in last 24 hours… edge to Fins over Swedes in terms of goaltending?? noooooooooo

  37. bunny rabinowitz- i think both dingleberry and JR puffenstuff both didnt understand what bill was asking them. neither mentioned hank vs kipper. and even if finns have backstrom too, hes not been great this year. i think they were talking about the teams themselves. but yea, sweden will win i believe.

  38. yea salty- i agree. i love having so many games to watch every day during teh break. theyre always some team yopu kinda root for even if theyre latvia or the chinee womens team. its all fun dude

  39. Lev-sson Etienovich Rabinowitz on

    Mike in IA,

ye i am “Lev” and no its not my real name. heh. i just figured id change it since everyone was changing their names to sound Finnish, so I made Lev-sson (Swedish) Etienovich (which is my Russian middle name, dads name is Etien) Rabinowitz (random Jewish last name that came into my head).

  40. Lev-sson Etienovich Rabinowitz on

carp, 2-0 Canada :( hopefully Hank puts up a better showing than the Swedish babes.

  41. ha nice lev!! that name rabinowitz is familiar to me. my dad used to say the name rabinowitz when i was a kid. i would ask him who somebody on tv was and hed say, “mike, thats bunny rabinowitz”. i have no idea why he did that. i guess he found the name humorous. no idea where bunny came from though lol

  42. just created an awesome frosty treat. ideal more for summer though. i took a carton of dole pinapple-orange-mango juice and poured it into an ice cube tray last night. idk why but sometimes after work i get soo thirsty and drink soo much juice, or water. but theyre good. like little italian ices.

ohh man, i cant even get into this womens game. another lopsided affair. looks like a practice drill. wake me up when hank is on

  43. I hope these idiot NBC people do not make us miss any of the Rangers game for this garbage USA curling!

I was listening to the radio today and the ESPN radio idiots were talking about the Canada hockey game not being put on at the start. Their comments were the biggest joke. They said that NBC knows what it is doing and if they left off the Canada game for the curling, then the curling must get better ratings!!!!! What a bunch of idiots.

The only reason why the swadouches at NBC left it on was because it was USA curling.

  44. Glad you made it home safe Sally.

Grabby, you mean you feel like a little italian ice, don’t you?

CR9, ha! old habits die hard, but it would really be something to miss Rangers for curling :)

What is with the crush on curling!?!?!

  45. turn on msnbc bonus coverage of sweden once canada women game is over until 8 pm then they switch over to cnbc

  46. Linda says GOOD LUCK TEAM USA!!! GO CALLY!!!! on

i am watching a game between Sweden and Germany being called in French….

  47. and curling is still on so we miss the first 10 mins and the last 4mins of the first.

6 out of 20 mins in the first we see

  48. Extra round for icedarts (LOL Salty)….I’ve been so not paying attention I just recently realized they’re probably showing it because it’s the USA team and they have a chance to win gold. Now that I know that, I feel so much better! ARGH!

  49. Linda says GOOD LUCK TEAM USA!!! GO CALLY!!!! on

they still have the curling on! thank God for hockeystreams!

  50. This is a joke!

I hope the USA curling team loses solely because they made us miss Sweden today, and Canada yesterday.

  51. CR, if you’re on the East coast and make the JJ game, bless you. No way I will.

I wonder if these curling guys can sweep up my terrace. It gets awfully dirty after winter.

  52. Linda says GOOD LUCK TEAM USA!!! GO CALLY!!!! on

from what i’ve actually been able to see, sweden looks a bit out of sync, hopefully they’ll pick it up in the 2nd when everyone else here can see it! Enough with the curling, it has been on all freakin day!

  53. Linda says GOOD LUCK TEAM USA!!! GO CALLY!!!! on

laurel, had stream problems, then they decided to keep switching back and forth between the french and english feeds of the game…

from what i saw, Hank looked fine. I’m hoping this curling will be over soon so all of ya can see the game.

  54. I wonder if Jagr’s still dating that Czech model. She was all kinds of hot. I remember he brought her to the Garden when they had that ceremony for both he, and Shanny for scoring 600 goals. It’s on youtube somewhere.

Jags is a Czech legend. He’ll be dating 18 year old chicks when he’s 70. Go Jags !

  55. We must be missing something about this sport, but I sure don’t get the fascination. I just saw three young shirtless guys with USA painted on their chests (Puddy anyone?)….not that I mind that, but for curling!!??

  56. Absolutely. He’s Jaro. I will never miss any game that Jaro is involved in willingly. I’m on the East coast.

The guy is an international treasure, and the fact that Sather kicked him to the curb to resign Roszival and sign Redden is the biggest disgrace. He should have been fired with cause and not had his remaining contract paid for letting the best player in the world go.

  57. Izzy Mandlebaum on

One thing about curling, if you’re not very good at it you could get stoned during the game.

  58. Wow I so hate curling right now! On a lighter note if any of u guys like meatballs check out the meatball shop in the Les. I don’t work there and I’m not friends with anyone that is. It’s just really good and not expensive.

  59. Linda says GOOD LUCK TEAM USA!!! GO CALLY!!!! on

this programming is atrocious. they are already calling this the worst olympics ever in regards to that poor luger from Georgia dying, the technical glitch during the opening, and the weather. The PROGRAMMING is the bigger issue. Honestly, a little curling makes me laugh, but almost an entire day of it??

  60. Reason number infinite x2 that Bettman needs to be fired; you get a Men’s Hockey Game postponed by curling?

It’s almost like the NHL is afraid to get fans and only wants it to remain a small cult.

  61. I still cant believe Prospal isn’t on Team Czech. Even Pruchs, he’s having a decent year.

It was too bad Pruchs missed it in Torino. He had that injured knee from a Flyers game. We would have had aboot 5 or 6 Czechs on that team.

I miss those two seasons, 05 to 07. Great years.

  62. Linda says GOOD LUCK TEAM USA!!! GO CALLY!!!! on

how did they NOT attempt to get some of the hockey onto Versus?! This looks really bad on NBC

  63. Linda says GOOD LUCK TEAM USA!!! GO CALLY!!!! on

heck, just think Fankist spending a week workin on the tan. he’ll look insane when they come back from the break! Can’t wait.

  64. I wouldn’t mind if it were Women’s curling, but what straight guy wants to be watching grown men sweeping, squatting and shouting “HARD”?

  65. update to all

the czech slovakia game is due to come on cnbc at 1230 am and it starts at 1159. there is a switzerland slovakia womens hockey game on that starts at 1000 and wont end until 1230. we will miss first period of jagr

  66. JB

The women are not that special. I think the mothers of the Torino Olympic Curling chicks were playing instead of their hot daughters.

Team Russia was full of supermodels, but now they’re old and wrinkly. I don’t know what happened.

  67. Linda says GOOD LUCK TEAM USA!!! GO CALLY!!!! on

i WISH i could bring you guys in on the stream, especially since you’ll also miss the first period of the Czech game too.

  68. This has to be a new Report record…the most (and some of the funniest) comments about a sport that drives everyone nuts but is still watching :)

    Linda, I did!

CR, good for you. I’m still not gonna make it if I want to get paid tomorrow.

    It’s Hank time!

  69. Doodie Machetto on

As long as the NHL uses the shootout, I think it should adopt the Olympics’ scoring system. 3 points for regulation win, 2 points for OT or shootout, one point for OT loss or shootout loss. Erases the addition of the magical addition of a third point.

  70. How was that not goalie interference? Sedin jumped right into him.

I’m no curling fan, but at least it’s a sport, unlike all this X-Games snowboarding crap.

  71. I think I understood that CT :)

Game on just in time! I’m gonna go plotz and watch. WhooooHoooo and Hankster amongst youseselves….

Sally, Izzy inadvertently raised a good point. Should everybody’s names be Swedish now?

  72. Izzy Mandlebaum on

how long before Sather signs Forsberg?

Not for a couple years yet- Forsberg still looks like he has some skill.

  73. Doodie Machetto,

The NHL will not go to that point scoring system any time soon. The current one gives the casual observer the illusion of parity. They want to keep all the teams bunched up together so that the long season doesn’t become boring for fans whose teams have fallen out of the playoff picture.

  74. Linda says GOOD LUCK TEAM USA!!! GO CALLY!!!! on

LMAO they are playing ABBA again! where’s the scorpions? they played 99 red balloons earlier

  75. LW

In my opinion, most of the X-Games stuff if more of a sport than Curling.

You can be completely out of shape, and be able to play Curling, Golf, Nascar, Bowling, Ping Pong, Poker, etc. X-Games is different, you have to be an athlete to do that. You cant just pick up a snowboard, skateboard, or something like that, and just nail it.

But, all i have to say it….POKER IS NOT A SPORT !!! I still don’t get why ESPN plays Poker and not Hockey. It’s embarrassing. Stupid Buttman.

  76. ORR, i think the ‘biggest’ Nascar driver is Tony Stewart, most of the drivers are not fat.

  77. Not saying it’s not athletic, but anything that relies entirely on being judged isn’t a sport in my eyes. Figure skating too.

  78. Rangers Report is taking up a new game? Curling! Does anyone know the rules?
Hank looks good. And Germans are no pushovers , eh

  79. Izzy Mändlebäum on

LW I agree about figure skating. After the judging scandals last time they should have dropped it from the Olympics. It’s a political popularity contest.

  80. Oh yeah, Jeff Gordan. I always confuse him with that Dan Patrick guy, he’s like the original ESPN guy.

I think im related to Dan Patrick, through marriage or something. I never met him, but if i ever do, ill tell him to put hockey on ESPN.

  81. lmao! yea, because poker is definitely NOT a sport. Do people actually sit on their couches and watch that?

  82. It’s Danica Patrick, fyi.

I miss seeing Hank! This is sweet!

fyi, laugh at it if you like, but you have to be seriously athletic to figure skate, and there is sweating involved.

I so love a game without TV timeouts! Is it just me though, or are a lot of these men’s games involving very low shots on goal?

  83. Laurel, Izzy… GO TEAM SWEDEN!

Just bought a ticket to Chicago for spring break! I can already smell the superdawgs, cheeburgers, deep dish pizza, good mexican food, superdawgs, heart attacks. Oh and I can’t wait to drink Boulevard again! It’s gonna be funnnnnn!!!

  84. wicky...FrancoNeanderthal on

curling is great on the wii if you do not have a local rink!!

We sign forsberg in about 5 minutes after teh olympics end!

    ilb
    got it!!

  85. ‘you can just see the talent, the way the guys on the team control the puck’…. LOVE HANK!

  86. Sally, come again? I have no energy to find that translation online! But everytime I heard Zetterberg tonight I thought of you :)

Everytime I heard Oduya’s name I thought of Pete Townshend (you’ll either get that, or you won’t. Clue: Listen to it this way…o. du. ya!)

  87. Laurel, “Do you have a bandaid? Cause I scraped my knee when I fell for you.”

It was one of the pick-up lines I learned just for Henke. Then when I finally ran into him I couldn’t even remember English.

    Eyelashes.

  88. Shite, I think my first comment got lost. Pardon if this repeats, but just wanted to thank you all for another great day here. Five games tomorrow! Three men, two women, starting with Rangers USA v. Norway at 3 (preceded by curling as noted above).

Will have update with times, channel and more in update tomorrow, way before the crack of noon.

Enjoy JJ for those who last….night all!

  89. Sally, this didn’t post either….same thing would have happened to me…(jaw drops to floor, breaks in pieces…)

The line is kind of carpy in English, but I bet he would have enjoyed the Swedish :)

  90. lol oh god i missed the game!! hank got shutout though so thats cool. only 2-0? damn. germany has some nhl’ers though in sturm, erhoff, kolzig??? theres gotta be a few more sprinkled in there. this slovak-swiss match should be a 0-0 tie. we’ll be missing all those goals very soon!!

  91. guys, idk what kinda problems u guys are having with not seeing the games due to the “sport” known as curling, but ive been able to watch every hockey game in its entirety on msnbc or cnbc. havent missed one minute, until i fell asleep during swedens game. and im in the middle of nowhere USA

  92. oh salty- i said granato was dooable. shes not a babe though. theres another girl who does color commenting but they show granato soo much more. thats the girl i was talkin about. maybe i got my post mixed up.

  93. come on over everyone!!! party ova hea!!! porn in the corn!! porn in the corn!! everybody drop ya drawers cuz we got porn in the corn!! and full olympic hockey coverage. not watered down like those other channels. no curling!! just hurling!!

  94. Update above in post for Hank re-caps. Wicky, this does not count as a laurel…..this is mama being dedicated. There is a difference….:)

  95. Lev-sson Etienovich Rabinowitz on

CCCP, really? Jagr’s looks a bit better but I was thinking about remembrance for Cherry. will sleep on it, and decide tomorrow, hehe.

  96. Linda is worried... Sather might be THINKING!! on

i’d put up the link for the HOT GUYS, but crosby is on it so it negates the list… for shame!!!!!!!!!!!

  97. I can’t decide if I’m more upset that Lundqvist shutout doesn’t count for the Rangers or for my fantasy hockey team. Kidding though, I can’t help rooting for him.

Also, looking forward to seeing Jagr play.

  98. Linda, such a shame!

CR, you have a great time! Give us updates and color as you can, you devoted one!…Mama really has to go Greg ZZZZZZZZZ….I tried, I really did, but now I am gone.

  99. for orr, if they had four feet, it would work. sister blog is not that kind of cat blog, but thanks for thinking of it!

Crack-boneheads be gone….let mama get her sleep and move on!

  100. Linda is worried... Sather might be THINKING!! on

sunuvabeyotch, they are stickin with the chicks on hockeystreams..grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr this is just horsecrap all the way around!

  101. and now my cable has gone out. only the hd channels work, for some odd reason, and CNBC is not in HD, so adios to my dreams of seeing Jaromir once again!

  102. Lev

I think wearing Cherepanov’s jersey would be kind of weird…at least for me because that whole thing with Cherry is still sort of fresh.

  103. Izzy Mandlebaum on

I find Olympic Hockey a pleasant diversion from the NHL, AND Sather’s Frankenrangers. I think he put the team together in his basement.

  104. Linda is worried... Sather might be THINKING!! on

4 shots on the pp so far, 3 bombs from kaberle…OOH JAGRS on the ice!

  105. Linda is worried... Sather might be THINKING!! on

so was the previous one NYR..he was on for a long time..strong as a horse

  106. Linda is worried... Sather might be THINKING!! on

“tallest player ever in the National Hockey League”…so kenny, the casual fan wants to know…HOW TALL IS HE???

  107. Thanks CCCP, but my service came back in time for me to see that Jaromir has only an A on his jersey.

Then I hear that Elias is the Captain.

What kind of demeaning joke is that?

Did Jaromir only get cheated out of the C because he played for the Rangers?

Who in the world cares about Elias or looks up to him as if he is a captain?

  108. Linda is worried... Sather might be THINKING!! on

now now NYR!! still don’t want to see the guy miss time. I’m enjoying watching him on a nightly basis, would like that to continue!

  109. Izzy Mandlebaum

I’m part Slovak. And don’t ask which part….

    ………..

    Izzy

you part Slovak and I’m full Jew… asking me NOT to ask is asking too much! So, which part Izzy? :)

  110. What a great game. Seeing jags and gabby play against each other is making my day. My favorite player against my favorite current rangers forward.

  111. Izzy Mandlebaum on

It’s got to be tough to have your first game to be so important. The winner only has to beat Latvia, the loser would have to beat Latvia AND Russia.

  112. Linda is worried... Sather might be THINKING!! on

wait for it CCCP, we’re still stuck with him for 2 more periods!

  113. lol CCCP

Thanks. Seeing Gabby get called for that cross check in front of the net was kind of amusing.

Though that was an actual penalty, he must have thought he was wearing a Rangers uni.

  114. LOL @ Jagr “deserving” captaincy. The guy left the NHL to big big fish in the Kontinental. What a joke! Surprised he’s even got an A.

    There you go Gabber.

  115. All I could think during that pp was “I wonder how many goals gaborik would have if he had just one more good player along side of him.

  116. I think all 12 teams advance anyways.

LOL @ your assertion that Jagr does not deserve the captaincy.

    So he left the NHL?

    What does that mean?

He is still the best leader in all of hockey. He puts a team on his back despite his age, takes hits unlike everyone’s assertion of Drury, got strangled every time he touched the puck as a Ranger, and still made everyone around him better (except Scott Gomez, through no fault of Jagr’s)

Jagr was one of the best leaders the Rangers ever had, and only went to the KHL was because the Rangers did not want him back, so he went to the KHL out of loyalty to the NYR!

Class, Beauty, Brains, Physique. Jaromir Jagr is the perfect human being!

  117. CR9 you are a real piece of work if you believe half of what you just spewed out, especially this instant classic:

“Jagr was one of the best leaders the Rangers ever had, and only went to the KHL was because the Rangers did not want him back, so he went to the KHL out of loyalty to the NYR!”

As much as I loved Jagr for what he did in NY, it’s well known that he was a brat of a player and he left the NHL because he wanted some freedom and openness in terms of game play, translation: he wanted an easier gig. Coaches also did not want to coach him, nor did he want to play in systems where he wasn’t “the top guy”. That’s documented.

  118. hossa had sick shootout skills orr. he also played good with jagr. idk get why a kid with his skill couldnt be more productive here. it must be hard for some people to get paid lots of money to play a game that they love for a living. another bust.

  119. Linda is worried... Sather might be THINKING!! on

    JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!

  120. And he scoreeeesssssssss. Jjjjjaaaaarrroooommmiiirrr jagr!!! Idc what he costs. I want him back!

  121. “some freedom and openness in terms of game play, translation: he wanted an easier gig. Coaches also did not want to coach him, nor did he want to play in systems where he wasn’t “the top guy”. That’s documented.”

You are a real piece of work.

He wanted freedom and openness in terms of game play.

Translation: He was tired of getting raped and strangled every time he touched the puck as a Ranger, and wanted to play actual hockey.

Coaches also did not want to coach him: Is that why he remained one of Tom Renney’s closest friends and remained in contact with Renney daily while in the KHL?

To think, he was still one of the best players in the NHL 2 years ago, at 36 years old, and with the added challenges of the referees and wearing the Rangers jersey.

    JAROMIR creates again!

  122. Badabing! Thanks sather

    we needed redden and rozi

we sure did not need jagrs pathetic scoring touch.

  123. There is Mike Boston Milbury.

“Jagr may be moody and may only show up 1 out of every 3 shifts..”

Hey, Milbury, Jagr did not go into the stands to attack Rangers fan like you did, you scumbag.

  124. Translation: He was tired of getting raped and strangled every time he touched the puck as a Ranger, and *wanted to play actual hockey*.

Coaches also did not want to coach him: Is that why he remained one of Tom Renney’s closest friends and remained in contact with Renney daily while in the KHL?

    …..

there are 29 other teams in the NHL… why is he not playing anymore? NHL hockey is not real hockey? You are really grasping at straws dude.

And absolutely, Jagr LOVED Renney because Renney stood back and let Jagr do *whatever* he wanted, _to a fault_. There are not many other NHL coaches who were willing to let a 37 year old Jagr control and divide their locker rooms into North American/European alliances…which absolutely was the case in NY.

Jagr left the NHL because he couldn’t handle his own aging process and taking on diminished roles. Great player, decent leader at times, but by no means “best leader in hockey”… you are embarrassing yourself again man.

  125. Great White

And that goes to show that coaches had no problem coaching him.

Also, he does not want to be the top guy…..He is on the 3rd line for the Czech team and has only an A on his jersey, and he goes out there and is still the best player on the ice.

  126. well he didnt give renny his job, but he kept teh team in contention so there was no reason renny would be fired. look what happened the year after jagr left. renny got fired. he let jagr run teh team and he was there to cater to him.

  127. why is he not playing the in the NHL anymore?

Because he remained loyal to the NYR.

Playing with the NYR comes with the acceptance of getting raped any time you have the puck.

Diminished role….Sort of looks like he’s got a diminshed role in these Olympics, but that does not stop him from succeeding.

38 years old, and still one of the best players on the ice in an international competition with the world’s greatest.

    Speaks volumes.

  128. Izzy Mandlebaum

    Hey, we still have Drury…

    Thanks, Glen!

    …….

You got it, Izzy! Trade date line is coming…just wait and see what i got up my sleeve!

  129. CR9 is letting his emotional attachment to a player blur his perceptions of reality.

“And that goes to show that coaches had no problem coaching him.”

How old are you? Did you follow his career? Everyone knows Jagr was a known “coach killer”. Do you even know what that term means?

  130. i loved jagr as a ranger. im just saying he was moddy and a guy like renny was the perfect coach for him. a guy like torts wouldnt put up with half assing it for half teh season to save himself for th playoffs when the playoffs arenta gauranteed thing. i know he brought it when we needed him most, and he is one of my fave rangers, im just sayin he wasnt that easy top coach for anybody with a pair of balls to bench him if he wasnt tryin hard enough. thats what i dont get about torts and drury. its gotta be from glen himself not allowing drury to be benched.

  131. All of this garbage about Jagr leaving the NHL is just that, garbage.

He would be playing for the Rangers right now if Sather had not been stupid enough to commit bundles of money to Roszival and Redden.

Jagr rightfully expected to be paid for carrying us (along with Henry) on his back during his time in NY.

  132. Diminished role….Sort of looks like he’s got a diminshed role in these Olympics, but that does not stop him from succeeding.

38 years old, and still one of the best players on the ice in an international competition with the world’s greatest.

    ….

Yeah man! He looks fantastic out there, no doubt. It’s one game though. He could not even compete a full 82 games in the NHL at 36… I really wonder how things would go now. It would be interesting for sure, and I’d take him at *the right price*.

But yeah, it’s awesome to see him play again on TV, no doubt. Funny how quickly people forget how he coasted very often as a Ranger though, not to mention divided the locker room and had players he didn’t like kicked out of the room within minutes.

  133. I understand what you are saying…

But if a team has a guy like Jagr, you let him play the way he wants to play. He is a leader and a coach on the ice.

Do you think Jagr loafed because he was lazy or moody?

It was more likely due to his age and injuries that he played through without complaining, and the fact that playing with the Rangers, he got strangled every time he had the puck, and the referees were not of much help after his 54 goal season.

He rightfully saved as much energy as he could for the playoffs.

  134. He would be playing for the Rangers right now if Sather had not been stupid enough to commit bundles of money to Roszival and Redden.

Jagr rightfully expected to be paid for carrying us (along with Henry) on his back during his time in NY.

    …..

Dude you have a blurred reality. Jagr had been hinting he was done playing in the NHL for ages. If he wanted to be a Ranger so badly, he could have played at an affordable rate, no problem. He’s a greedy, selfish dude. For such a big Jagr fan, you really don’t seem to know ANYTHING about him or what goes on with him. I do enjoy this though.

  135. Jags was nasty throughout his career and still is nasty. I don’t see how some of you can be down on him after all he did for our rangers.

  136. cr9- actually jagr got a lot more money to play for the khl. the generous cash offer mightve been the deciding factor. not his love for the rangers. if that was the case, he wouldve taken a hometown discount like other players do.

  137. Jags always said he would return to the NHL to play for the Pens if Mario asked him to.

From the looks of it, if i was Mario, id tell him to come back.

Put him with the Crybaby, or Evgeny Sloth, doesn’t matter, he’ll put up nice points, and make their PP even dangerous.

I hope he returns. He’s not like these useless old men that are taking up roster spots for kids. He can still play the game !

  138. I dont care that he’s greedy or selfish. He deserves to be.

Even though I was aware of his loafing with the NYR, I never cared. I always attributed it to injuries, age, and the stigma of wearing the Rangers jersey.

I actually respected him more for understanding the treatment he received as a Ranger, and loafing as a result of it, saving his best game for the playoffs.

  139. Salty,

how do you know about how he acted in the lockerroom? Are you in there? How do you feel about Avery? Do you really believe that a happy lockerroom means a better team? See 08-09 rangers…

  140. But if a team has a guy like Jagr, you let him play the way he wants to play.

    ……

Yeah, in 1992, sure. (Were you alive then?)

Renney tried that approach in 2007, and 2008. It didn’t really fly bro.

36 also isn’t THAT old for NHL. Yet, he looked very old in his last season here.

He went to the B league voluntarily. That’s a fact.

  141. He gets a boatload in Russia and I’m pretty sure he does not have pay any taxes, or if he does, not that much.

Sure, he could have taken a discount to return, but why?

When Sather is out there shelling dough for Drury and Gomez and Roszi and Redden, why should Jagr not get his proper reward.

The guy carried us on his back year after year, brought us back to respectability, and deserved to be compensated.

  142. Salty,

how do you know about how he acted in the lockerroom? Are you in there?

    ……

It’s documented bro. Even Sam Weinman would allude to the “divided locker room” on this very blog. Jagr was all smiles, but he had his own agenda, always. Always.

Just look at Roszival… he still thinks he’s not allowed to shoot from the point, no matter what the coach says.

  143. Do you guys not remember that glen sather just said “goodbye” to jagr. He didn’t offer him a contract. He said it was time to move on and didn’t want to offer him too little because it was insulting. I remember this well because it might have been one of the most disappointing days I’ve seen in the NHL

  144. 36 years old is pretty old in the NHL for a guy with the mileage that Jagr had, and with the 4 “Strangled” years with the Rangers.

4 years with the Rangers is like 8 years everywhere else.

  145. Jags is awesome. So skilled, so strong on the puck. Anyone who talks crap about him really doesn’t appreciate hockey. On the Rangers, he was surrounded by junk and allowed to be abused on the ice by a league that is still a bastion of Canadian cronyism and favoritism.

    Go 68. HOF.

  146. Salty,

we all heard about the divided locker room. But most people pointed the finger at Avery. You can’t just go wagging your finger at jags just to prove a point. You weren’t there and don’t know that it was jags fault.

    …….

    You are admitting your denial.

Guess what bud… He’ll never be a Ranger again. Sorry.

ORR brought up an absolute nail in the coffin of your arguement too: He’s on record saying he wanted to play in PIT. So much for ranger loyalty.

I wonder why PIT wouldn’t want a “leader” like Jagr in the locker room… probably because his ego would have completely stunted that +team’s+ development by addressing his own agendas.

  148. cr9- u make some good points, but just dont agree about some things. basically the loafing it through teh season. that season was very close to being an early golf outing for us. ya gotta get there first. i understand he had to carry the team while in the playoffs, but i just dont agree with it. we want players to give it 100 percent every game. he gave 100 percent maybe half teh season. imo, if you want a bigger raiose and be the highest paid player on teh team, then play every damn game hard. unless your winning by 3-4 goals, but there werent many times we had that luxury with renny safe is death system

  149. What the heck

It’s just a lack of appreciation.

Not that Jagr is not greedy or does not get along with other teammates…

but to believe Sam Weinman or everything the media has to offer is a joke by itself.

You say Jagr has an agenda, always. The media has an agenda, always. ALWAYS.

So when the media spews negativity about Jagr, it’s probably just their jealousy of a truly great man!

  150. Who gives a flying fugg aboot his “loafing”

Doesn’t matter how old he is, of all the Rangers, *he* was always the one showing up for the playoffs.

That’s all that matters. But, sadly the rest of the guys couldn’t show up and help him out.

Who knows, maybe if we had Jags last season, we might have won that series. Or maybe we wouldn’t, cause Hank reeeeaally stunk it up in those last few games.

  151. Salty,

    with the utmost respect,

I feel that you feel like jags has personally offended you. He would be great for our rangers team still to this day. Look at our squad. He would be a star here right now

  152. we all heard about the divided locker room. But most people pointed the finger at Avery. You can’t just go wagging your finger at jags just to prove a point. You weren’t there and don’t know that it was jags fault.

    ……

Divided locker room = Shanny’s crew (N.A. guys) vs Jagr’s crew (Euro guys)

You had a team going in two different directions, and Jagr was pulling in the direction opposite of the coach’s.

Avery is irrelevant in this conversation. He was a problem, but not _the_ problem.

(Jagr and Avery also got along very well, FWIW)

  153. So he cannot also have loyalty to his original team, Pittsburgh, and to the Rangers?

I do not take that as a slap in the face.

Jagr is the only player I would ever root for on a non NY team, aside from maybe Jeter.

If he went to Pittsburgh, and was not playing the Rangers or the Rangers had no chance at the Cup, I’d go for Pitt and Crybaby Crosby the whole way.

My only dilemma would come if he played for the Bruins; I’m pretty sure I would have to root against him in that case.

  154. Shanny’s crew versus Jagr’s crew?

Is that why when Shanny was being interviewed by the Lightning guys this past week during the Rangers game…. Shanny brought up Jagr out of the blue without being prompted by the lightning guys, and spoke of his admiration for Jagr????

  155. Id love to see him return, and end his career with the Pens. As much as i hate to say it, it would be pretty cool.

Stupid Pens fans, always booing him. Fuggin tools.

They should retire that number 68. If they don’t, they suck !

  156. good argument fellas. loyal hockey fans like youse staying up to watch hockey, not even ranger hockey, when some of us have work in a few hours. damnit i got 4 hours sleep if i go right now. ohh boy being a hockey fan is gonna kill me one day! lol. goodnight everyone.

  157. I feel that you feel like jags has personally offended you.

    ……

Not at all, I’m just an objective fan who calls it like I see it. I saw Jagr do a lot of wrong while he was here.

I feel like you have this blind loyalty to the guy and are unable to admit he’s not what he once was. If he was still that good, and even close to worth the money, he’d still be in the NHL, and maybe on NYR.

The guy didn’t want to play NHL hockey anymore unless it was n his own specific terms, when he didn’t get his way, he walked… it’s documented proven fact… why are people even attempting to deny this? It’s comical.

  158. Salty

where are you getting this na vs euro split? Youre making this stuff up now. It’s in your mind.

  159. CR9

You’ve done an excellent job contradicting yourself, back pedaling, and ultimately pulling things out your ass Re: Jagr.

You’ve admitted you are basing everything you say soley on your admiration for the guy, as opposed to documented facts, which is never a very smart move.

The guy had a great night too! I look forward to seeing him play more in this tourny.

Now just cue ORR’s Britain/”Wood” joke and I’m calling it a night.

  160. “You’ve done an excellent job contradicting yourself, back pedaling, and ultimately pulling things out your ass Re: Jagr.

I did not contradict myself once.

I did not backpedal once. Jagr is a the perfect blend of class, leadership, brains, and beauty. Whatever he did, he had a good reason for (i.e. loafing).

I did not pull anything out of my ***. I believe you did when you mentioned North Americans versus Europeans clique, Shanny versus Jagr.

I apologize for having to call you out on that. Why exactly would Shanny talk of his admiration for Jagr less than one week ago, when there was no need to and Jagr’s name was not mentioned or implied?

It goes to show that you have put to much stock in the NY bashing media and the all around jealous media.

Leave it to the media to make Jaromir Jagr into a bad guy, and leave it to an idiot fan to actually believe everything the media provides, especially in regards to a great man like Jagr.

  161. Salty

where are you getting this na vs euro split? Youre making this stuff up now. It’s in your mind.

    ……

Honestly man, it’s pretty well known by anyone who was playing attention at the time, and especially those of us who were on this blog at that time. Sam Weinman was ALWAYS in the locker room and at practices and has alluded to this, as have the other beat writers. It’s really not that hard to understand, and if you knew anything about hockey, you’d have visibly SEEN the team going in two different directions, Euro guys playing a slowed down East/West style game, and NA guys trying to play a fast paced, North/South game. (Most obvious example: Why do you think Gomez/Jagr never worked? Complete opposite styles) And it’s not just on ice, it’s a locker room mentality that needs to be taken on as a team. It was a divided locker room. Yes, it actually happened. Sorry you missed it.

  162. I apologize for having to call you out on that. Why exactly would Shanny talk of his admiration for Jagr less than one week ago, when there was no need to and Jagr’s name was not mentioned or implied?

I’m sure there is a mutual respect and I doubt any animosity whatsoever. Shanny is FAR from innocent as far as dividing the locker room, the only thing is he was pulling his guys in the direction of the coach while Jagr had his guys doing what he wanted (i.e. “give me the puck no matter what coach says”). They had their crews, is it that hard to believe? It’s not an inherently evil thing. This happens in hockey, sports, and life.

  163. Salty

Where did you come up with this.

The style of the team was controlled by Tom Renney, remember him.

Last time I checked, jacques lemaire, the inventor of the neutral zone trap, the slow down game. He happens to be North American.

Tom Renney also preached the same type of game. Also, North American.

Euro guys play a slow down East West game? you mean like Alex Ovechkin or Evgeni Malkin, or Pavel Bure, Alexander mogilny??????????

    You are truly embarrassing yourself.

  164. Euro guys play a slow down East West game? you mean like Alex Ovechkin or Evgeni Malkin, or Pavel Bure, Alexander mogilny??????????

    You are truly embarrassing yourself.

    …….

You clearly know absolutely nothing about this sport, let alone the concepts of East/West hockey vs North/South hockey.

All the Devils have _ever, EVER_ played is N/S hockey.

And to even mention those players in this conversation just hands me the Gold medal. It’s too bad this is so late in the thread, I’d love for more people to read this exchange/serving in the morning.

  165. Jaromir helped Nylander to his highest goal total in a single season and goal total in 2 consecutive years at 26 and 23 goals.

Mr. Give me the Puck Jaromir Jagr helping Nylander to his career best of 49 goals in 2 seasons, all this in a defensive style system.

Jagr just wants the damn puck!

And with Ovechin in 2 years, Nylander with a grand total of 11 and 9 goals!

  166. The style of the team was controlled by Tom Renney, remember him.

    ……

I remember him all too well.

Why don’t you enlighten us all if you’ve got such a grasp on this, what exactly would you say Renney’s style for this team was?

IF you can answer me that, would you say that Jagr played into that system? Or would you say he played the way HE wanted to play?

  167. By your definition, the “Euro guys playing a slowed down East/West style game”.

You also said that North South is fast paced.

Then, by your definition, that is not what the Devils play.

They play the neutral zone trap, slowed down defensive game.

I never said that all Europeans play only one style or all N.A. play only one style. You did.

Your contention is that because Shanny is N.A., and Jagr is Euro, that their styles collided.

That is the farthest thing from the truth.

  168. “IF you can answer me that, would you say that Jagr played into that system? Or would you say he played the way HE wanted to play?”

We played a defensive system. If you look at the statistics, As Jagr’s goal total went down following his 54 goal season, our Goals Against ultimately went down to 199 goals in Jaromir’s final season with the Rangers.

One could argue that as his goal total dropped off, and our Goals against went down, that would be evidence of him following Renney’s style.

Now, to the subjective part, I remember numerous times during his final season, the talk of him backchecking more and playing more defense. That would be buying into Renney’s system.

In my opinion, him playing more defense and coming back on plays cramped his game and was a detriment to his scoring.

  169. I never said that all Europeans play only one style or all N.A. play only one style. You did.

    ….

Wrong. I said that’s what Jagr was eventually doing in NY. Having all his guys playing the way he wanted, East/West puck control game… while Renney wanted shots from the point and crashing the net. You’re starting to get it, just don’t confuse the trap with East West style offensive hockey. The Devils never had THAT skilled of players that they could dominate a game like that. They play ugly hockey, and score ugly goals by scrapping and scrambling and waiting for a mistake. But that doesn’t mean “East/West” in this context. East/West is Nylander slowing everything down to a halt upon entering the zone with the puck and looking for a play/Jagr, as opposed to someone putting the puck on net with 2 guys crashing like hell. You’re getting warmer.

  170. One could argue that as his goal total dropped off, and our Goals against went down, that would be evidence of him following Renney’s style.

Now, to the subjective part, I remember numerous times during his final season, the talk of him backchecking more and playing more defense. That would be buying into Renney’s system.

    ….

Definitely. Do you remember how big of a deal this was? “Wow, Jaromir Jagr is _listening_ to the coach a little bit…What a GUY!” truthully though, it was nice to see sometimes.

Look, if Jagr’s putting up 50 goals… yes, by all means, you let him do whatever the hell he wants, no questions.

But when those numbers dropped… you can’t just ignore it and let this guy do as he pleases anymore. That was the whole problem with both Renney and Jagr. Jagr owned him after that 50g season, and everyone knew it, especially the locker room. That’s why I started to really dislike Renney and eventually was ready for Jagr to move on… (and just imagine the picks we could have gotten him if we traded him at the deadline to a contender!)

  171. I liked Jagr a lot after I got to see what he did in NY, but the guy had some awful years (before getting here), and certainly had his faults… he’s not a “perfect” player and his “ultimate” leadership can easily be argued against…that’s all. I certainly don’t hate the guy at all, but I can argue all day about damn near anything. Gretz is my fave ever, but I could shoot him down too and say X, Y, or Z is/was/will be better for whatever reasons.

  172. wicky...FrancoNeanderthal on

Jagr was a great OFFENCIVE hockey player and will certainly be a first ballot hall of famer for it. He was also a KNOWN moody and one zone oriented player, who rarely gave 100% continuously! He was a great wingman (see 2 cups with super mario as the captain) and the rest of his career as a LEADER (no cups in washington or new york) produced nothing because he is a BAD example of what a CAPTAIN should be. With all of his marvelous leadership ability the rangers struggled to get into the playoffs every season just like the ones without him here and did nothing once they got in. He is no better and just as bad a captain of the rangers as drury is (except drury fights once a season and actually throws the occasional hit). Success rate with jagr and drury are equal for the rangers and their leadership ability is on par with each other as well!!

Bottom line…jagr is a one zone player that is a first ballot hall of famer due to his offencive ability, not his leadership ability!! Great offencive player, piss poor captain!!

  173. Blueshirt in Paris on

C’mon, I know its not saying much but he is better then our ‘1st’ line center…who ever that may be.

  174. Blueshirt in Paris on

Should and will are two different things; Especially in Sather World.

At least this would not cost anything but money. But I guess at this point we should just continue to suck and get a higher draft pick…sigh

  175. i think the fact that we werent taken seriously at all combined with hank emerging and jagr scoring surprised everyone but after that, he was contained easier. they made gameplans just for jagr. thats also a reason his point totals dropped. both gomez and jagrs ego’s got in the way of the team chemistry that prevented them from getting far in the playoffs that year. they had all the tools of a winning team- leadership, talent, goaltending, the best agitator in the game, the avery factor, good team defense. 5 in the fox. and last but not least, a clutch goal scorer in the playoffs. that lockerroom was divided to an extent. when avery left, drury, duby, and few others, were happy. dru did not like avery, they still dont look like they get along. i dont remeber exactly what went on in teh room, but even the pp units had distinctely different styles. jagr and his czechmates, and shanny, with gomez playing a totally different style. the chemcistry was limited and with 2 guys liek shanny and jagr, who both command tons of respect, there was definitely conflicting personalities and that screwed up teh chemistry. remember our 5 on 3 pp during that season? it was pretty damn pathetic. jagr and shanny both hogged the puck. shanny had his followers and so did jagr. it only works if you have those types of players who will put egos aside and come together to build a great team. not just that, but sather has a revolving dooor in that lockerroom and so many new players each year didnt help chemistry and team cohesiveness either. that was the most talented team we had since mess and gretz.

  176. Good morning, all.
Sounds like a good game last night. DVR’d, will watch later.
Can you try to give more insight on the USA game this afternoon? Most of the space on the blog was taken by self centered pissing contest between a couple of people. I suggest you go back and look at it again. It has very little meaning.
Good assessment by Wicky oh Jagr, though. Having said that, I’d take Jagr any day of the week over 95% of our players now or starting next year. Forsberg, by the way, can still play. Not sure if I’d want him on our team at the moment.

  177. Canadian media doesn’t like players who have a personality. That’s why they criticize Ovechkin and make Crosby out to be a hero for every boring thing he says. They didn’t like Jagr because they had made Lemieux a saint, and Jagr would dare to speak his mind.
Jagr would still make a huge impact on the Rangers. His size alone would help. Tiny Drury can’t take a hit or hold on to the puck, much less make a play. And mentoring younger players is something Jagr did constantly — who has Drury helped? Look at the success Bill Guerin has had in Pittsburgh — who thinks Guerin is better than Jagr?
Jagr has always been criticized for every single shift, yet no player plays every shift perfectly. Canadian media are xenophobic. And this leadership argument is nonsense — putting a team on your back is leadership — has Drury or even Messier in this century been able to do that? Love Roenick for dissing Milbury every chance he gets.

  178. messier may not have been able to carry the 05-06 team at age 35, like jagr did, but teams didnt play us with much respect. we snuck by undetected for awhile and hank coming out of nowhere took everybody by surprise. u put messier in the new nhl(non clutch n grab/shootout points, etc…) you couldve seen similar results. but yes jagr had the ability to single handedly take a team on his back moreso than mess. but mess was better in other areas of the game. and he did win a cup here. not jagr, even with shanny, gomez, straka, aves, hank, dru, the best pk duo in shoe n betts… but yea our d was nothing like 94. and aging jagr and shanny is different from a early 30’s messier and kovalev, leetch, richter.

  179. Mornin’ all.

Looks like I missed a fun night of hockey, and a lovely argument here.

So, Gabby DID play? How did he look? Could he push off on that leg?

I’m sorry I missed Jaromir :( Love that guy.

Alas, I was sound asleep by the time the game came on.

  180. Messier in this century was horrible on the Rangers. He never took a back seat on the Rangers when he was in his 40s, including his horrendous penalty kill play. He was a huge part of the disastrous Rangers Sather era.
Jagr saved the Rangers and brought them back to respectability — the best thing about the lockout was that Messier finally retired.

  181. Mickey – Gaborik scored a signature Gabby goal. Positioned himself in a soft area around the net, received the puck and snapped a perfectly placed shot into the upper corner. He looked pretty happy scoring for his country and against their natural rivals.

My thoughts on Jagr, when his declining stats are mentioned, don’t forget the injury he suffered in the Olympics in 2006 and then him throwing out his shoulder in the playoffs that year chasing after Gomez. He never regained his signature snap shot or when he did there was far less zip on it.

I think the hockey media went a little out of their way to vilify him in Pittsburgh after their ugly divorce. He had a right to be disappointed that they weren’t surrounding him with talent like they did with Lemieux – although surrounding Lemieux with talent all those years did cause a lot of their financial problems that led to Lemieux converting his deferred payments into an ownership stake – but Jagr was also at fault for being a bit of a prima donna by the time he inherited the team. They even tried to bring in a Czech coach just for him (Hlinka) and him and Jagr didn’t have a good relationship.

He was essentially exiled in Washington, never surrounded with talent to make the team a winner and he probably could have sucked it up a little better but superstar talent or not that situation was never going to work out.

I think overall he did a good job embracing his role with the Rangers. I was disappointed that he did not give 100% effort 100% of the time in his last couple of years but with the exception of his last season, he was still at least a point per game player.

I’d like to think that him and Sather had a mutual understanding about how the team would be built after Jagr’s contract was up. Jagr did march to the beat of his own drummer, he made no secrets about his desire to play in Europe both in the KHL and in his native land while he was a still a serviceable player. I don’t think you can underestimate his pride in being an all time great and to be able to showcase his talents, albeit diminished, in Europe was important to him.

He did a lot of good in his years wearing the Rangers jersey. He was also part of an equation that didn’t quite work out after Sather decided to load up for a Cup run when the salary cap was aggressively raised. To give him full credit or assign full blame to either is however very short-sighted.

  182. CT, thanks.

Excellent take on Jagr, too. I agree that pride and his desire to play in his homeland while still somewhat of an impact player had as large a role in his leaving as Sather kicking him out the door did. If there was one thing that cannot be denied about Jagr (besides his talent), it was that he was a very very proud man.

  183. Staal Wart is now...2ranger4 on

Guys, I Don’t know if this was discussed but…Since Gabby is still out, what does that tell you about the complete f-ing idiocy of trying to have him play against the Pens.
How did he ever get a nod to play in that game?
Is that how you deal with your players?
Makes me wonder about who told him he could/should play…

  184. Nice to see that Gaborik can play for Slovokia. Anyone think he rested so he would not miss the Olympics? Jagr look good, huh?
