“A third source has shed some more light on the much-talked-about fake marriage proposal during the Rangers 5-2 win over the Lightning on Sunday. The third source confirmed what the first two sources said Sunday; that it was a hoax. However, the third source said today that the “couple,” “Nick and Melissa” were actually actors hired from an agency and that it was meant as in-game entertainment. So the Rangers and the Madison Square Garden people knew all about this, which, to be fair, is different from what I heard Sunday. At first I was told they were a real-life couple who decided to do this on their own to generate some publicity for themselves and that the Rangers and the Garden did not know about it.

mightymatt, I have NO problems with Cally and Dru on the 4th line for Team USA. Dru’s been on teh 4th line a few times for the Rangers this year. And ok, we’ve beaten to death what the issues/problems are with him, so not going there. As for Cally- he’d be a really good 3rd liner on a very good NHL team, but with the Rangers lack of depth/players/etc, he’s been playing up a line or two. On Team USA, he’s a perfect 4th liner. Energy guy, PKer, hard on the forecheck, willing to bang. Just what a 4th liner on a team of “all stars” should be. Plus, I have no problem with him getting reduced minutes for Team USA, considering all the minutes he gets for the Rangers.

The NHL will not go to that point scoring system any time soon. The current one gives the casual observer the illusion of parity. They want to keep all the teams bunched up together so that the long season doesn’t become boring for fans whose teams have fallen out of the playoff picture.

In my opinion, most of the X-Games stuff if more of a sport than Curling.
You can be completely out of shape, and be able to play Curling, Golf, Nascar, Bowling, Ping Pong, Poker, etc. X-Games is different, you have to be an athlete to do that. You cant just pick up a snowboard, skateboard, or something like that, and just nail it.
But, all i have to say it….POKER IS NOT A SPORT !!! I still don’t get why ESPN plays Poker and not Hockey. It’s embarrassing. Stupid Buttman.

Yeah man! He looks fantastic out there, no doubt. It’s one game though. He could not even compete a full 82 games in the NHL at 36… I really wonder how things would go now. It would be interesting for sure, and I’d take him at the right price.
But yeah, it’s awesome to see him play again on TV, no doubt. Funny how quickly people forget how he coasted very often as a Ranger though, not to mention divided the locker room and had players he didn’t like kicked out of the room within minutes.

It was more likely due to his age and injuries that he played through without complaining, and the fact that playing with the Rangers, he got strangled every time he had the puck, and the referees were not of much help after his 54 goal season.
He rightfully saved as much energy as he could for the playoffs.

Dude you have a blurred reality. Jagr had been hinting he was done playing in the NHL for ages. If he wanted to be a Ranger so badly, he could have played at an affordable rate, no problem. He’s a greedy, selfish dude. For such a big Jagr fan, you really don’t seem to know ANYTHING about him or what goes on with him. I do enjoy this though.
Jags was nasty throughout his career and still is nasty. I don’t see how some of you can be down on him after all he did for our rangers.

cr9- actually jagr got a lot more money to play for the khl. the generous cash offer mightve been the deciding factor. not his love for the rangers. if that was the case, he wouldve taken a hometown discount like other players do.
Jags always said he would return to the NHL to play for the Pens if Mario asked him to.

He went to the B league voluntarily. That’s a fact.
He gets a boatload in Russia and I’m pretty sure he does not have pay any taxes, or if he does, not that much.

It’s documented bro. Even Sam Weinman would allude to the “divided locker room” on this very blog. Jagr was all smiles, but he had his own agenda, always. Always.
Just look at Roszival… he still thinks he’s not allowed to shoot from the point, no matter what the coach says.
Do you guys not remember that glen sather just said “goodbye” to jagr. He didn’t offer him a contract. He said it was time to move on and didn’t want to offer him too little because it was insulting. I remember this well because it might have been one of the most disappointing days I’ve seen in the NHL

I wonder why PIT wouldn’t want a “leader” like Jagr in the locker room… probably because his ego would have completely stunted that team’s development by addressing his own agendas.
cr9- u make some good points, but just dont agree about some things. basically the loafing it through teh season. that season was very close to being an early golf outing for us. ya gotta get there first. i understand he had to carry the team while in the playoffs, but i just dont agree with it. we want players to give it 100 percent every game. he gave 100 percent maybe half teh season. imo, if you want a bigger raiose and be the highest paid player on teh team, then play every damn game hard. unless your winning by 3-4 goals, but there werent many times we had that luxury with renny safe is death system

Divided locker room = Shanny’s crew (N.A. guys) vs Jagr’s crew (Euro guys)
You had a team going in two different directions, and Jagr was pulling in the direction opposite of the coach’s.
Avery is irrelevant in this conversation. He was a problem, but not the problem.

Jagr is the only player I would ever root for on a non NY team, aside from maybe Jeter.
If he went to Pittsburgh, and was not playing the Rangers or the Rangers had no chance at the Cup, I’d go for Pitt and Crybaby Crosby the whole way.
My only dilemma would come if he played for the Bruins; I’m pretty sure I would have to root against him in that case.

Not at all, I’m just an objective fan who calls it like I see it. I saw Jagr do a lot of wrong while he was here.
I feel like you have this blind loyalty to the guy and are unable to admit he’s not what he once was. If he was still that good, and even close to worth the money, he’d still be in the NHL, and maybe on NYR.
The guy didn’t want to play NHL hockey anymore unless it was n his own specific terms, when he didn’t get his way, he walked… it’s documented proven fact… why are people even attempting to deny this? It’s comical.

I did not contradict myself once.
I did not backpedal once. Jagr is a the perfect blend of class, leadership, brains, and beauty. Whatever he did, he had a good reason for (i.e. loafing).

Honestly man, it’s pretty well known by anyone who was playing attention at the time, and especially those of us who were on this blog at that time. Sam Weinman was ALWAYS in the locker room and at practices and has alluded to this, as have the other beat writers. It’s really not that hard to understand, and if you knew anything about hockey, you’d have visibly SEEN the team going in two different directions, Euro guys playing a slowed down East/West style game, and NA guys trying to play a fast paced, North/South game. (Most obvious example: Why do you think Gomez/Jagr never worked? Complete opposite styles) And it’s not just on ice, it’s a locker room mentality that needs to be taken on as a team. It was a divided locker room. Yes, it actually happened. Sorry you missed it.

I’m sure there is a mutual respect and I doubt any animosity whatsoever. Shanny is FAR from innocent as far as dividing the locker room, the only thing is he was pulling his guys in the direction of the coach while Jagr had his guys doing what he wanted (i.e. “give me the puck no matter what coach says”). They had their crews, is it that hard to believe? It’s not an inherently evil thing. This happens in hockey, sports, and life.

Jaromir helped Nylander to his highest goal total in a single season and goal total in 2 consecutive years at 26 and 23 goals.
Mr. Give me the Puck Jaromir Jagr helping Nylander to his career best of 49 goals in 2 seasons, all this in a defensive style system.

We played a defensive system. If you look at the statistics, As Jagr’s goal total went down following his 54 goal season, our Goals Against ultimately went down to 199 goals in Jaromir’s final season with the Rangers.
One could argue that as his goal total dropped off, and our Goals against went down, that would be evidence of him following Renney’s style.
Now, to the subjective part, I remember numerous times during his final season, the talk of him backchecking more and playing more defense. That would be buying into Renney’s system.
In my opinion, him playing more defense and coming back on plays cramped his game and was a detriment to his scoring.

Wrong. I said that’s what Jagr was eventually doing in NY. Having all his guys playing the way he wanted, East/West puck control game… while Renney wanted shots from the point and crashing the net. You’re starting to get it, just don’t confuse the trap with East West style offensive hockey. The Devils never had THAT skilled of players that they could dominate a game like that. They play ugly hockey, and score ugly goals by scrapping and scrambling and waiting for a mistake. But that doesn’t mean “East/West” in this context. East/West is Nylander slowing everything down to a halt upon entering the zone with the puck and looking for a play/Jagr, as opposed to someone putting the puck on net with 2 guys crashing like hell. You’re getting warmer.

Definitely. Do you remember how big of a deal this was? “Wow, Jaromir Jagr is listening to the coach a little bit…What a GUY!” truthully though, it was nice to see sometimes.
Look, if Jagr’s putting up 50 goals… yes, by all means, you let him do whatever the hell he wants, no questions.
But when those numbers dropped… you can’t just ignore it and let this guy do as he pleases anymore. That was the whole problem with both Renney and Jagr. Jagr owned him after that 50g season, and everyone knew it, especially the locker room. That’s why I started to really dislike Renney and eventually was ready for Jagr to move on… (and just imagine the picks we could have gotten him if we traded him at the deadline to a contender!)
I liked Jagr a lot after I got to see what he did in NY, but the guy had some awful years (before getting here), and certainly had his faults… he’s not a “perfect” player and his “ultimate” leadership can easily be argued against…that’s all. I certainly don’t hate the guy at all, but I can argue all day about damn near anything. Gretz is my fave ever, but I could shoot him down too and say X, Y, or Z is/was/will be better for whatever reasons.
Jagr was a great OFFENCIVE hockey player and will certainly be a first ballot hall of famer for it. He was also a KNOWN moody and one zone oriented player, who rarely gave 100% continuously! He was a great wingman (see 2 cups with super mario as the captain) and the rest of his career as a LEADER (no cups in washington or new york) produced nothing because he is a BAD example of what a CAPTAIN should be. With all of his marvelous leadership ability the rangers struggled to get into the playoffs every season just like the ones without him here and did nothing once they got in. He is no better and just as bad a captain of the rangers as drury is (except drury fights once a season and actually throws the occasional hit). Success rate with jagr and drury are equal for the rangers and their leadership ability is on par with each other as well!!
Bottom line…jagr is a one zone player that is a first ballot hall of famer due to his offencive ability, not his leadership ability!! Great offencive player, piss poor captain!!

i think the fact that we werent taken seriously at all combined with hank emerging and jagr scoring surprised everyone but after that, he was contained easier. they made gameplans just for jagr. thats also a reason his point totals dropped. both gomez and jagrs ego’s got in the way of the team chemistry that prevented them from getting far in the playoffs that year. they had all the tools of a winning team- leadership,talent,goaltending, the best agitator in the game, the avery factor, good team defense. 5 in the fox. and last but not least, a clutch goal scorer in the playoffs. that lockerroom was divided to an extent. when avery left, drury,duby,and few others, were happy. dru did not like avery,they still dont look like they get along. i dont remeber exactly what went on in teh room, but even the pp units had distinctely different styles. jagr and his czechmates, and shanny, with gomez playing a totally different style. the chemcistry was limited and with 2 guys liek shanny and jagr, who both command tons of respect, there was definitely conflicting personalities and that screwed up teh chemistry. remember our 5 on 3 pp during that season? it was pretty damn pathetic. jagr and shanny both hogged the puck. shanny had his followers and so did jagr. it only works if you have those types of players who will put egos aside and come together to build a great team. not just that, but sather has a revolving dooor in that lockerroom and so many new players each year didnt help chemistry and team cohesiveness either. that was the most talented team we had since mess and gretz.

Good assessment by Wicky oh Jagr, though. Having said that, I’d take Jagr any day of the week over 95% of our players now or starting next year. Forsberg, by the way, can still play. Not sure if I’d want him on our team at the moment.
Canadian media doesn’t like players who have a personality. That’s why they criticize Ovechkin and make Crosby out to be a hero for every boring thing he says. They didn’t like Jagr because they had made Lemieux a saint, and Jagr would dare to speak his mind.
Jagr would still make a huge impact on the Rangers. His size alone would help. Tiny Drury can’t take a hit or hold on to the puck, much less make a play. And mentoring younger players is something Jagr did constantly—who has Drury helped? Look at the success Bill Guerin has had in Pittsburgh—who thinks Guerin is better than Jagr?
Jagr has always been criticized for every single shift, yet no player plays every shift perfectly. Canadian media are xenophobic. And this leadership argument is nonsense—putting a team on your back is leadership—has Drury or even Messier in this century been able to do that? Love Roenick for dissing Milbury every chance he gets.

messier may not have been able to carry the 05-06 team at age 35, like jagr did, but teams didnt play us with much respect. we snuck by undetected for awhile and hank coming out of nowhere took everybody by surprise. u put messier in the new nhl(non clutch n grab/shootout points,etc…) you couldve seen similar results. but yes jagr had the ability to single handedly take a team on his back moreso than mess. but mess was better in other areas of the game. and he did win a cup here. not jagr, even with shanny,gomez,straka,aves,hank,dru, the best pk duo in shoe n betts… but yea our d was nothing like 94. and aging jagr and shanny is different from a early 30’s messier and kovalev,leetch,richter.
i really do not like comparing players like that from different eras or acheivments, so thats all speculation. but yea, let this jagr argument die already. im done talkin about it.

Alas, I was sound asleep by the time the game came on.
Messier in this century was horrible on the Rangers. He never took a back seat on the Rangers when he was in his 40s, including his horrendous penalty kill play. He was a huge part of the disastrous Rangers Sather era.
Jagr saved the Rangers and brought them back to respectability—the best thing about the lockout was that Messier finally retired.
Mickey – Gaborik scored a signature Gabby goal. Positioned himself in a soft area around the net, received the puck and snapped a perfectly placed shot into the upper corner. He looked pretty happy scoring for his country and against their natural rivals.
My thoughts on Jagr, when his declining stats are mentioned, don’t forget the injury he suffered in the Olympics in 2006 and then him throwing out his shoulder in the playoffs that year chasing after Gomez. He never regained his signature snap shot or when he did there was far less zip on it.
I think the hockey media went a little out of their way to vilify him in Pittsburgh after their ugly divorce. He had a right to be disappointed that they weren’t surrounding him with talent like they did with Lemieux – although surrounding Lemieux with talent all those years did cause a lot of their financial problems that led to Lemieux converting his deferred payments into an ownership stake – but Jagr was also at fault for being a bit of a prima donna by the time he inherited the team. They even tried to bring in a Czech coach just for him (Hlinka) and him and Jagr didn’t have a good relationship.
He was essentially exiled in Washington, never surrounded with talent to make the team a winner and he probably could have sucked it up a little better but superstar talent or not that situation was never going to work out.
I think overall he did a good job embracing his role with the Rangers. I was disappointed that he did not give 100% effort 100% of the time in his last couple of years but with the exception of his last season, he was still at least a point per game player.
I’d like to think that him and Sather had a mutual understanding about how the team would be built after Jagr’s contract was up. Jagr did march to the beat of his own drummer, he made no secrets about his desire to play in Europe both in the KHL and in his native land while he was a still a serviceable player. I don’t think you can underestimate his pride in being an all time great and to be able to showcase his talents, albeit diminished, in Europe was important to him.
He did a lot of good in his years wearing the Rangers jersey. He was also part of an equation that didn’t quite work out after Sather decided to load up for a Cup run when the salary cap was aggressively raised. To give him full credit or assign full blame to either is however very short-sighted.

Excellent take on Jagr, too. I agree that pride and his desire to play in his homeland while still somewhat of an impact player had as large a role in his leaving as Sather kicking him out the door did. If there was one thing that cannot be denied about Jagr (besides his talent), it was that he was a very very proud man.
Guys, I Don’t know if this was discussed but…Since Gabby is still out, what does that tell you about the complete f-ing idiocy of trying to have him play against the Pens.
