The day after (updated)

429

I don’t have a lot to say, or much time to say it. One of the disadvantages of not being on the long road trip is that things that happen out there are happening three hours later here. So the guys staying up to work on the story last night were doing so at 10 p.m., while I was doing it at 1 a.m. And, of course, if I got up at 10 a.m. here, they were still sleeping in at 7 a.m. there.

So I’m tired, and I’m trying to do the job of the departed Kevin Devaney Jr. (I told you about him leaving last week) and the job of Josh, 26, who’s out of town this week, and my own job, and the blog, and I’m pretty much out of gas. And it’s only Tuesday afternoon.

I will say this. I think the trade made last night was a good one in that it releases $3M per year from the salary cap the next two years. And maybe Prust turns into a legit NHL player/tough guy. He’s certainly willing. But Jokinen won’t be around after July 1, and he might not even be around after March 3. So I don’t expect this deal to have a major impact on the team going forward (although a rejuvenated Jokinen might provide a couple of months of good hockey playing with Gaborik … maybe).

I really think it will be unfair if Voros is removed from the lineup, or worse, from the roster, because of these moves. Limited as he is, he deserves to stay, and he has said and shown he will do anything to be part of this team.

I suspect more is coming … perhaps the cleansing of one of the albatross contracts on defense and the addition of a D-man or two. We’ll see. I don’t know if it’s imminent or not.

I do know that Glen Sather is going to address those lucky, rested, on-Pacific-time reporters in L.A. later. So if I’m not around — and I probably won’t be — maybe you guys can lift it and place it in the comments, with attribution of course.

I have a hoops game this afternoon, so I won’t be back until late evening. Therefore I’m happy that the game doesn’t start until much later and I’ll be able to see it. No guarantee I won’t be sleeping in my chair by the first period, though.

Thanks for hanging in with me. See youse later.

AFTERNOON UPDATE, 12:35 p.m.: Both Jokinen and Prust are expected to be in the lineup tonight, according to the Rangers.

  1. REPOST

I can’t wait to watch my boys Dustin Brown and Wayne Simmonds destroy the Rangers tonight. I mean I’m a Rangers fan 1st, Kings fan 2nd, but we aren’t going anywhere and the Kings are fun as anything to watch. I love watching them play because they never disappoint and as they’ve proven numerous times (see last game against NJ), they aren’t out of a game until the final whistle is blown.

  2. Jeff S from DE on

I gotta agree with your take on Jokinen, unfortunately, Carp. His value to us will be in the cap space he clears and the players/picks we receive in a trade for his services (if any).

  3. NO !

Gabby and Hank need to burn out, and the team needs to completely tank. They need to draft the 2nd overall pick, waive / miraculously trade / buy out Dredden, and trade Blowzy, and figure out someway to get rid of Dreary, then use that money properly.

Then we have a nice piece for the future, who might be able to play in the NHL now, or might be a year or two away, and we can have players that care.

    Keep Torts too !

If all of this happens, the future will be brighter. It’s already brighter, now that Kotalgeeks big forearms are no longer blocking the sun.

  4. You gotta hand it to Sather…

How many GM’s could cripple their team with not one…not two…not three…but FOUR albatross contracts that are killing his cap room and given to players who, based on their performance and effort, should consider themselves lucky to be in the NHL?

And to chime in on Drury plugging his pizza place when Mr. Mumbles either refuses to speak to the media or talks like (and I forgot who said it, but they nailed it) someone on a hostage video when they do ask for a quote…

Some pair of balls on this guy. Bad enough he’s a joke on the ice and couldn’t lead the Hakawi Tribe in F-Troop…but he finally decides to speak up to plug his business when the team is on a 5 game losing steak.

MSG can spin it any way they want…We all know Drury is without a doubt the worst “leader” this team has ever been saddled with.

Christ, Kelly Kisio gave more as Captain than this clown…and I thought Deputy Dog hustled every night despite limited skills.

  5. maybe at some point we could get someone to write for this blog, who a) actually has the time and energy to do it, and b) actually likes the Rangers.

  6. None of this still answers or responds to the problem that faces this team ……they don’t play NHL calibre hockey. Period. They cannot pass worth a lick, they don’t skate hard enough, often enough,…and they do not make serious body contact where and when they should…like around their own goal mouth. Still too many “swordsmen” on this team…you know, the guys who jab and poke at the puck
( while the goaltender goes nuts trying to find it), but never take down the body of the guy who threatens. And this goes on and on and on, game after game after game.

And someone please tell Del Zotto to stop with those mile long passes over three time zones, not because he can’t do it..but nobody on this club knows how to RECEIVE them!

It’s their MECHANICS that are all screwed up. And they do love those boards. I keep waiting in expectation of sereing some shooter move over to center of the ice before unloading ..like the real players do. And the non existent hard slap shots that ever team in the league (except them) use constantly and with telling effect.

  7. WannaBe – no matter what happens this year, this team isn’t making waves in a bathtub let alone the playoffs…

  8. I’d be wary of what they could spin Jokinen for.

He’s not going to have a lot of games with the Rangers before the deadline so let’s assume that any scouting done on him will be based on his performance this year for the Flames.

And based on the fact that the Rangers were able get him for a deadwood contract in Higgins and a mini-albatross contract in Kotalik, I don’t think his value will be too high on the trade market. Plus it’s not like he could even be sold as a proven playoff performer.

I’m more than fine with letting him wind down the remainder of his year with the Rangers and then bidding adios to him after the Rangers season ends sometime between early April and most likely late April.

  9. Yeah, you’re getting better Carp ;) Thanks for that. For me after Sam lef that blog was pretty much dead but now it seems like it’s getting better. Keep it up, man!

  10. Sounds like you could use a vacation, Carp. Some place warm and with one of those drinks with an umbrella in it.

Totally agree on Voros staying in the lineup. We all know (and I think he knows this, too) that he’s not the most talented player in the room and is far from it, actually. But he busts his ass every day, is willing to fight anyone at risk of his own life it seems, and from his comments, he gets what an honor it is to be a NY Ranger and to play in the NHL.

  11. Hey Brendan-
Eat Shattenkirk. Carp is our boy. This is the only Ranger Blog I read cuz it’s the best. Now go back to being a Devils fan.

  12. ESPN Insider has a batting average below the Mendoza Line. You’re paying for sports speculation and gossip…aka tabloids. Not worth the money or time spent reading it.

  13. cjp – whats the 4th bad contract?

theflynn – thank you for pointing that out. they never go to the slot. at least other people are seeing it too. it’s the #1 reason why they don’t score. Which reminds me, I have some stats for you guys:

95% of goals in the NHL are scored between the faceoff dots. The Rangers shoot from outside the faceoff dots 60% of the time.

If they want to know why they can’t score, there is your reason.

  14. CJP,

As bad as it is to have a mediocre team saddled down with killer contracts, it’s almost just as bad to have a legitimate contending team saddled with bad contracts. Chicago needs to shoot for the moon this year because based on their current roster they only have 15 players under control for next year and they’re already over the cap (assuming it even stays flat, let alone if it goes down).

Just imagine if they had savings on players such as Campbell, Huet and Sopel. You could probably save nearly $10MM on those 3 alone if you replaced them with players that produced like they did with only more appropriately sized deals.

This isn’t an excuse of Sather’s ineptitude of the past decade, but the Rangers aren’t the only team to have mismanaged the cap or hamstring their team with bad deals. Look at Calgary too and see why they’re having a fire sale.

  15. Cat hair? Fingernail? Wha?

Brendan – has anyone introduced you to the coat check? Seriously, Rick was up late with us Reporting last night. He doesnt travel with the team like Brooks does. AND he does all of his reporting for FREE. He doesnt get paid for it. We love him like our Uncle! Piss off if you dont like it here.

    Have a nice day :)

Re: Voros I said since the beginning of the season, this kid came to play. He wants to be a Ranger and even though he may not win every fight. He plays his heart out every single shift. His last two fights he was cut & he didnt care. He’s a great team guy. Brashear should be the one banished.

Re: D, albatross, Rick if there is something in the works to rid the team of ONE of them. Preferable Rozi – I will never wear NEON AGAIN! (inside joke with linda)

  17. For the love of God stop feeling sorry for Voros, I know he tries but he is real bad, with real bad penalities, real bad skating, real bad fighting abilities, spare me the heart that’s the only way ne can stay in the NHL this is his last shot. Stop falling in love and look at the guys with the best chance to give the NYR’s 2 pts. and he aint it.

  18. Some of the scholars posting here lately remind me of people on other sites who read articles and then post “who cares”. Well asshat, you cared enough to read it and post something, and made yourself look like a totaly Horses Sather!

Are people actually being forced to read the blog by someone holding a gun to their head?? Get the hell out if all you wanna do is complain. Maybe we just need to ALF some of the mental snookies who’ve come here lately.

  19. What initially attracted me to this blog was the sense that you were really getting behind the scenes/lockeroom info with Sam usually around the team and covering practice, and every update felt like exclusive info…even if it was what kind of cereal Straka was eating.

However, I’ll quite enjoy Carp’s realistic/objective view of the team over Sam’s puff pieces at this point.

Although he was always fun to read, Sam’s formula became very predictable…especially when the team was on a slide and we’d want to be angry… Sam never wanted to be too hard on the team/Renney, etc.

Why? Because the people here are entertaining. And all the news I need get’s here soon enough for me. Or sooner than others as in the Kotalik trade.

    My two cents.

  21. Brendan your a d*ck not in the Avery mode in the Ken Linesman mode, not willing to drop the gloves. Rock on Carp

Mako, did you clear that with the boss of the house yet???

  23. Looking forward to seein the new guys in action tonight! Will be interesting to see the lines and how they fit in.

AGrossRecord Agent: It’s a “feeling-out situation” between Olli Jokinen and #NYRangers in terms of a possible new contract between sides.

WOW YETI,just do give a no trade no movement clause and 8 million per!

  24. Linda

I dont know. He did say he is excited to be playing “with one of the better players in the league” He knows Torts pretty well too since he played for Fla.

Prust seems pretty excited to come here….

Rick (Yes, that one) – Thank you.

  27. Linda

I made an announcement as I was typing!!!! She had NO idea what I was talking about in terms of the contract. But when she heard the words “NEVER” “NEON” “ON MY BODY” She shot out of the room like a champagne cork LMAO

  28. its gonna be strange to NOT hear CHristopher Higgins shoots wide!! At least the new guys already have blog nicknames! Makes it more fun eh!?

This is how it is going to go; and it is not good especially for Calgary or any other team in this league as well. From NY to Atlanta: Ollie Jokinen along with Wade Redden plus a second round draft pick From Atlanta to NY: Kovalchuk

NY will rent Kovalchuk from the trade dead line and make a legitimate Stanley Cup Run this year. They will dump Jokinen contract on the Trashers to deal with, and come July 1st, will try to negotiate a bargin price for Kovalchuk to stay or let him go looking for his 100 Million Dollar contract. Because of Calgary’s stupid trade, this now opens up room for Kovalchuk to potentially be sent to the New York Rangers and give them Gabby and Kovalchuk in a deadly sniper cup run of 09-10′

This was on TSN’s comments, LOL.

  32. Hey Carp, I could not agree with you more about Voros. He might not have much skill, but he has loads of heart. He is almost, and i wynce as I say this… like Gravey… minus much of Gravey’s skill of course. Brash was a huge mistake. Especially after last seasons playoff fiasco. 10yrs and no accountability. Sather has got to go!

  33. It will be interesting to see how they play tonight. Is there anything preventing Sather (other than pride) from sending Redden & Drury as well as Brashear to Hartford? I believe that works to our cap advantage. Than buy them out at the end of the year. Brashear is a waste and Redden is atrocious. Drury is not much better, just my 2 cents.

  34. LMAO SHOR!!!

I just read that and was going to post it here.

Apparently, lots of fans think that NY is looking to get Kovy. Lemme tell you… I wouldnt put it past Sather’s ego to really try to get him.

  35. AFLY – I actually pay for ESPN the Magazine and the Insider sign-up is free. I recently renewed the magazine for a year for $1 total, so yay for me.

    Here’s the info from Hradek:

_E.J., will my Rangers ever be rid of Glen Sather?_ — Eric, New York

“Eric, the end might be in sight. Remember, I said might. Over the past couple of months, there have been a number of rumors concerning Sather’s future in New York. In fact, there have been more of these kinds of rumors than at any other time during his decade-long tenure.

In looking into the matter, several individuals with knowledge of the club’s ownership infrastructure — speaking off the record — have told me that Sather might be pushed to step away from his current role as both President and General Manager (he’s also listed as an Alternate Governor). Logically, I would think that means he’d cede the GM title to club icon Mark Messier, who currently serves as a Special Assistant to Sather, while retaining the Team President gig. In that circumstance, he could serve as a veteran mentor to Messier.

One Western Conference exec didn’t believe Sather helped his cause internally when he made a deal to send winger Ales Kotalik to the Flames without remembering that he’d given Kotalik a limited no-trade clause as part of the three-year contract signed last July. Kotalik was able to hold up the deal — which finally went down on Monday night — because he tagged the Flames as one of the clubs he could refuse assignment to.

In the past, Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan has stood firmly behind Sather. So this might just be a case of wishful thinking from those inside the organization who’d like to see a change. The internal drumbeat for such a move, however, has never been louder.”

Look, Brendan, Carp did some reporting and contacted the Rangers! Shove it!

  36. Also Voros plays with heart and the team does’nt seem to have too much of that this year. He should stay

  37. The saddest part about Drury is that its all about the money. And by that i mean, if Dru was only costing us $2.5m a year we would all love him. We would say he is a good experienced guy to have around… blah blah blah. Now he is just a cap block. Sux, because I wonder if less expectation would make him a slightly better player. IE… less pressure. No excuses tho. right now as it is Dru is a waste.

  38. According to the Rangers roster on their website, Prust is wearing number 8 and Jokinen is wearing 12, former -lik numbers worn by Malik and Kotalik. :P

  39. Carp,

You actually think that they will be able to get rid of one of the two “R’s”???????????????

    Really?

  40. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

Brendan and E.J. Hradek have their heads up their corn-holes.

Sather, fired? Haha… as GM, perhaps, only to assign him to President as Messier becomes GM. Technically, yes, fired. But not gone.

Jokinen is a -80 because he’s only played on one good NHL team, the flames! Unfortunately for him, those days are gone! LoL. Seriously though, LA Kings were terrible, Islanders were terrible, Panthers were more of the same… the guy might throw up decent numbers this final stretch.

  41. Drury has a no trade no movement clause and cannot go to hartford. Charmins $$ hits our cap because he’s an antique.

  42. Mako,if you saw how jersey huge my hair is right now you’d fall out! Come on straightening iron heat up!!

    lmao messed up genetic clone!!

  43. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

Aaron Voros is great. He works hard, he has heart. He’ll take a licking for his teammates and he has no problem trying his best to do what the coaches say when they want something changed.

    BUT!

He still makes 1.0million a year AND he will take a dumb penalty every other game. The NHL, like the Pizza Galory near Trumbell, CT, is a business. Not everyone deserves a complimentary mouthguard with their delivery no matter how bad they want it, similar to not every NHL contracted player deserves to be in the NHL. Heart is great, but at some point you gotta play and I think (unfortunately for him, I do sympathize for the guy) his gig here might be up.

  44. OMG LINDA! Do go into the light!

Would it make you feel better if I hung upside down and sprayed aquanet in my hair?

  45. True, you’re correct. The entire MSG/NY Rangers complex needs to be cleansed of the stench of Sather. He really needs to be totally gone from the organEYEzation, with Mess having strict instructions to have NO CONTACT WITH HIM!! It’s bothersome that Mess is learning at this guy’s hem. We need a restraining order of 1000 miles in effect to finally be rid of his tentacles!

  46. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

I watched the Jokinen post-game interview from last night and I think this guy gets it. Maybe he is lazy. Maybe he didn’t play well in Calgary.

But he does say “it’s a slap in the face” to be traded (ie. he’s embarrassed) and then “It’s a business, you make 5million and score 11 goals… that’s not gonna cut it.” He is very honest with the press, himself, and realizes he wasn’t good enough. Now, besides Avery and Hank, who amonsgt the Rangers ‘leadership’ (cough, cough, DouchebagDrury) will admit that?

  47. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

Pizza galore or pizza gallery if I recall. I could be wrong because I didn’t see the interview.

  48. Lets not get too ahead of ourselves re: this trade.
According to Gross (via Twitter) Slats and Jokinens agent are discussing long term contract opps.

How many of you would change your tune this instance if the money we just freed up went right into the pockets of Ollie for the next 4 yrs?

  49. If I recall Jokinen played his best hockey under Keenan. And Torts is very much from the Keenan school of tough love and leaning on his best players. Who knows, maybe it will work out. But as I’ve said already, I’m ok with letting him play out the string as his contract expires.

  50. I think this mudak Brendan got plenty of love on the site from you guys already. Let me know if you need more. I can come up with a few Russian phrases. I’m in that mood today too…

  51. Spiderpig – Good for you. I’m glad you don’t actually pay for the Insider and thanks for posting the text from the article.

There is no way that the best deal Atl is going to get is Redden, Joks, and a 2nd rounder. I know their hand is forced, but I would be shocked if Sather could twist their arm like that.

  52. What if Olli works out here? He’s got size and skill. Say he has instant chemistry with Gabo and turns out not be a huge a-hole, then what?
How much is he worth after a relatively bad year?

  53. always the pessimist:

This is the actual tweet from Gross:

To clarify previous Tweet: Agent saying it’s a “feeling-out period” does not mean #NYRangers and Jokinen have talked contract.
    16 minutes ago from web

  54. hedberg, I don’t think I’d call it love for Voros. I think my point, and many agree, is that if it’s between Voros and Brashear, for example, Voros should stay and play. I think he has shown something that Brashear, for one, hasn’t. And many others, I might add. I don’t think he’s very good or very effective, and this is a last chance for him, and if they can find somebody better, so be it. But until then, he deserves anything he gets.

Thanks all, for having my back. As always. You guys rock.
Spider, thanks for posting that story by E.J.

I remember a graph a while ago someone posted on here fan per city around North America. But just seeing the fans alone in attendance – I think the Rangers have the most fans in the US in the league. What do you all think?

  71. Well Mako
I live in a small town in east coast Canada, I do know a total of 3 Ranger fans here. I do agree when you see the Ranger games even out west, there are usually lots of Ranger jerseys.

  72. I was at the Avalanche game and it was awesome. My buddy couldn’t believe how many Rangers jerseys there were. There were a few Lets go Rangers chants and even a Potvin sucks one near the end.

Pretty good defensive game by the Rangers too. I celebrated so much I missed work yesterday

  73. a couple of thanks
to Carp for doing what you do
(and i know how busy things can get…)
    and
Spiderpig for that espn insider info on sather
(damn, it’s hard to type when my fingers are crossed all the time in hope that the cigar chomper leaves!)

    also one more thanks
to everyone’s get well wishes for my wife after i mentioned
her getting in a car accident.
right now, she seems to be doing quite well. a little sore but quite well. i’m guessing the airbag helped out a lot!
as for the car…..now, dealing with insurance crap.

  74. Hockeymon

Its pretty cool to see :)

    Domi
yeah because Lou Lam always goes after that big fish LOL

  75. hedberg – I agree with you on Voros, but we only wish that everyone else played with as much heart as he did.

Domi, Rob, True Fans – I want the Kings to win because they are going somewhere. Them being successful and getting back on the main pages in LA would be huge for the sport of hockey. Guys like Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar should be much better well known instead of guys who nobody knows. Dustin Brown might actually be one of the best all around players in the league. If I asked anyone in here who Wayne Simmonds, Erik Ersberg, Raitis Ivanans (who is a beast btw), or David Drewiske was most people wouldn’t have a clue.

I’ve been a Rangers fan since day 1. I’m just sick and tired of this franchise being a joke under Sather. We need to start over and the only way that happens is if we start playing worse that we are now. I don’t want them to lose, but if it means we’ll be better off in the future and I don’t have to go to the Garden and watch a crappy team like I have for the last two years plus, then thats what I want.

You can question if I’m a real fan or not, but I am a Rangers fan. I want them to win the cup, but I know it’s not going to happen with Sather. I wouldn’t say I’m optimistic or pessimistic, just realistic and frustrated with our chances under Slats and I just hope you guys respect that.

  76. Carp I got no problem with Voros over Brash, i didn’t say that and neither did you. I said I want the best players on the ice for us to get a important 2 pts. and it aint Voros no matter how you slice it or the heart factor. Sit them both.

  77. Also I hope Glen or Mess aren’t GMs come July. We are missing 2 key types of players on this team, playmakers and defensive d-men. That’s one of the reasons why Higgins and Kotalik were even more terrible than they usually are. They aren’t all-stars, but they should’ve been good for at least 15 goals. Without playmakers to help set them up, they just sucked ever more.

And our defense has great offensive upside in spots, but we don’t have one guy that I would say is even close to a legit shut down d-man. People think Staal is close, but he isn’t. He’s better than everyone else on the team, but if we had a real shutdown d-man, he wouldn’t be looking so good.

    I respect that.

I get what your saying. I have been a Ranger fan a long time. I watch a lot of hockey. There are some teams I like to watch, simply because their fun for one reason or another. When it comes down to it though , the Rangers always come first for me.

  80. jpg, adding my well wishes for your wife. I can sympthasize on the dealing with insurance crap thanks to 3 of my own accidents in less than a year. Keep plugging away and eventually you’ll get through it.

Lines for tonight that I’d love to see:
    Prospal/EC/Gaborik
    Dubinsky/Jokinen/Callahan
    Avery/Anisimov/Lisin
    Voros/Boyle/Prust

Yeppers, that means Charmin and Captain Emotionless sit.

It’ll never happen, but a girl can dream, right?

  81. I am the same way Hockeymom. To me, You go through good times and bad times with this team and no matter how they are season after season they always come first. I love the sport, watching Hockey Night In Canada, NBC’s Sunday afternoon games, versus, heck even KHL games and no matter what Rangers are always 1st for me. I bleed Ranger blue like many for you.

  82. The reason why I fell in love with the Kings is that most of their games come on right after Rangers games. And for the last 4 years I’ve been able to check them out. Even in previous years when they were kind of frustrating at times and traded away my favorite guys like Cammalleri and O’Sullivan, they were always exciting to watch and I knew they were building to something better.

Plus its a team I don’t have to really hate since they barely play the Rangers. I like listening to Bob Miller and Jim Fox do the games, they have great TV coverage now (especially with Heidi Androl who is pretty smokin btw), and they do things the right way.

I enjoy watching the Kings play and have gotten into following their whole team from top to bottom including prospects. I used to have that same feeling about the Rangers and I loved the fact that I had season tickets and could watch the team live at MSG during those 05-06 and 06-07 seasons. I want that feeling back.

  83. THE REAL MikeyNJ on

    Good trade

    I like it
Sather must have drugged Sutter to do it

    Cap space Cehck
Short term on both players – Check
    Impact scoring center – Check
Rids us of two players who didnt do much – Check

All in all a good deal

  84. Hockeymon and Domi – its funny because as much as I complain about the team, I still watch every single game with hopes that they win. And all through that 7 year stretch of no playoffs, I watched every single game hoping they would win. So I haven’t necessarily lost my passion for the team, I just wish they would be more exciting like they were a few years ago, especially when I know the team could be so much better than they are playing.

  85. LA Kings announcers are great, i agree. I like the kings alot too, i was at work behind the bar on sunday night watchin that game seeing them down 2-0 and i said to my father watch this, this game isnt over, ryan smyth made great plays on the 2nd and 3rd goals to get in martys way in front of the net and doughty had a sick shot, i am not saying theyre my “2nd favorite team” but im rooting for them to come out of the west, but as for tonight i hope they get shutdown and shutout and do nothing.
As for staal, dont say that hes not even close to a shutdown d-man but he is close, he’s not robyn regher status or anything but the guy plays against the best players on the other team’s he’s facing everynight for the last 2 years and he does a damn good job, no matter who he’s paired with. If he starts making some more big hits people will notice him even more, this guy can be a great defensive d-man and he has offensive skills, not saying hes going to look like bobby orr anytime soon but as he matures and gets older his offensive game will continue to improve, we rangers fans were just expecting it too quick i guess after watching what he did in the OHL on youtube, going from coast to coast burning 3 guys.

  86. Just got my FIOS installed. It’s amazing. Those widgets are bad ass.

The tech that was out at my place was a huge Rangers fan too, and didnt think there was much of a chance MSG HD would be in their channel lineup before the end of hockey season, if this year at all.

  87. I just always felt he was overhyped because of the name. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a solid defenseman, but the way the media hyped him up, it was like he was going to be one of the elite defensive guys in the league when I just don’t see it. He’s definitely got a great poke check and probably needs to use his size a bit more to his advantage, but I just think he’s a bit overhyped.

However I will say, his younger brother Jared is the most overhyped of them all. He’s really living off of the last name.

  88. Jonny D – from your post @ February 2nd, 2010 at 2:19 pm
“Also I hope Glen or Mess aren’t GMs come July.”

As much as I think it would be a HUGE mistake, don’t you think that the GM job is going to be handed to Messier once Sather is fired / resigns / whatever?

  89. Doodie Machetto on

    LI Rangerfan, yes, it will.

Sather will never be fired. When Sather is ready, he is going to step aside and hand pick his successor, which is clearly going to be Messier. Dolan will do whatever Sather says.

  90. onecupin69yearsandcounting on

Why does sather get a ata-boy for making this deal.
He’s dumping some salary but is trying for the cup run with some toughness.
He makes these crap trades every year at this time, (morris, andropov)then he has nothing to show for it.

He’ll clear cap space and then he’ll sign players to big number contracts repeating the cycle.

I wonder who is in his $ight$ next year?

  91. We build FIOS at my office. No Rangers in HD no me. I can’t believe I’m still paying Cablevision. And no employee discount. :(

  92. Doodie – which, that it will be a huge mistake, or that the GM job will be handed to Messier?

  93. A lot of jibberish today. Hey, it’s a game day with two new players on the roster. Time to talk line combinations.

  94. Doodie Machetto on

    onecup,

This trade is good. There’s no two ways about it. It’s not like we gave up any value for the future. Instead, all we did was clear 3 million a year for two years.

Now, whether Sather kills us with the extra 3 million in space remains to be seen (and he likely will, possibly with Jokinen). But for the rest of this season, the trade only has upside (not counting finishing higher in the standings so we get a lower draft pick).

I’m not about to say he’s a good GM or that he shouldn’t be immediately fired, but this was a good move, any way you slice it.

  95. Doodie Machetto on

    Line combos (total guessing):

    Prospal-Jokinen-Gaborik
    Dubinsky-Drury-Callahan
    Avery-Anisimov-Lisin
    Voros-Boyle-Prust

    Defense as usual.

  96. just heard that nhl radio saying that lecavalier + picks to flames for kots, sarich and langkow.

makes sense cause they have all those wingers and need a center
also makes sense cause now kots wount play for the flames.

    NOT OFFICIAL!!
    just saying what i heard
    thats all

dont hold me to this when it doesnt happen

    thank you

  97. fIRE

That is God awful! What a douche! Too bad he has a family of hero’s & couldnt follow suit. Maybe he’s the black sheep of the family?

    TR

That kinda makes sense about Kotalik. His agent probably told him. “Dont worry you arent playing for Calgary you’re gonna get moved again” AND it also makes sense that he’s still in NY and not still out west with Higgins.

  98. I am guessing Torts will play jokenin between Gabby and Prospel. it might not last long though.

  99. Lets not forget fellas that Jokenin and Prust havent practiced with the team and Im sure they will be “off” for the first couple of games. Lets give them the benefit of the doubt.

  100. lines from practice

    stevezipay

    Avery-Dubi-Cally..Drury-Boyle-Voros Brash-Anisimov-Christensen…prospal-lisin-gabby.

ollie will go where lisin is

  101. forgot to mention how funny it is where drury is. he should go to glen and say please sign me for 3 more yrs at a mil each.

  102. Doodie Machetto on

Yeah… I don’t think those lines stay. No way does he put:

    1) Chris Drury on 4th line
    2) Brashear on third line (or Prust in his place)

Alternatively, if you think that the Drury line is third, there’s no way Voros is on the 3rd line while Anisimov is on the 4th.

and bklynblue, I wasn’t saying Voros SHOULD play over him, I was guessing what Torts would do.

If it were up to me, lines would be:

    Dubinsky-Christensen-Gaborik
    Prospal-Jokinen-Callahan
    Avery-Anisimov-Drury
    Lisin-Boyle-Prust

  103. Doodie Machetto on

Dubinsky-Christensen-Gaborik scored a lot while Prospal was out. But I’d easily do a center swap, moving Jokinen to first, Anisimov to 2nd, and Christensen to third.

  104. As far as the trade anything is better than nothing. Getting rid of that 3 year contract is a start. Is there more work to be done hell yes. Like getting rid of sather, drury, deadden, miss rosi, miss girardi, brash,Lisin Im fast like Gene Carr but suck and even though he gives his all Mr Voros. You can’t do everything without making a first step. If it only means Prust kicks carciellos ass it will be worth it. Now whats next?

  105. doodie,

drury has started games with the 4th line. it happend around the same time redden was sitting in the skybox watching.

i think lisin goes where brash is and prust where voros is.

  106. Doodie Machetto on

Matt, but I’d argue that the last game was one of Drury’s best, even if he didn’t score. He looked good, although he sucks.

  107. stevezipay

Tortorella: Jokinen will start with Gaborik and Prospal, Prust in as well; Lisin, Brashear healthy scratches

  108. Tony from AZ,

Agreed, i think Prust is gonna be one of those guys that the garden will love!

  109. No way those lines that Zip is reporting stay together. No of them make any sense whatsover. Chances are the lines will be a total mish-mash tonight, with everyone playing with everyone.

  110. How about this line the next time they play the Flyers:

    Voros/Brashear/Prust

Just tell them to go out – one runs the goalie, one fights Gagne the other beats the crap out of Carcillo.

  111. Anytime folks! It was really nice to see. Great job on his part!

Yeah the pup was cute being all curious LOL

  112. WOW, you go lil lady!! I HOPE TO GOD this guy has this moustache!! That is STELLAR!! he looks like the dude from Office Space without hair!!!

  113. Put Lisin out with Voros. Give the guy with some upside a chance we aint going anywhere the way we are currently made up.

  114. another nickname for Jokinen… LAWRENCE! wow, this guy already has what, 6 nicknames and he hasnt even put the jersey on yet!!!!!!!!!!

  115. If any of those line combinations stay together for more than one period, I promise I will become a vegan. We can talk whatever we want, it makes no difference. I, for one, think that Jokinen should be on a different line than Gaborik. He is not a setup center, he is used to being a go to guy, he wants to score. Gaborik needs someone who can create a space for him. But it’s certainly worthwhile to give them a chance together.

  116. Enver is scratched again eh? To bad I know he hasn’t done a whole lot, but for some reason I get a kick out watching him play. I am hoping he will become a good player, he has potential I think.

  117. Doodie Machetto on

ilb, see, that’s the exact reason I think they SHOULD be together. Gaborik doesn’t need to be setup, he creates his own space using his skating, deception, and his quick shot. Jokinen, somewhat of a scoring threat, would help draw some defenders, maybe open up more space to let Gaborik do his thing.

  118. Gaborik has scored a lot of goals this season without the so-called #1 center.

What the team hasn’t had is scoring from the 2nd and 3rd lines consistently. I’d put Olli on the 2nd line to see if they can get some goals from somebody other than Gabby.

  119. stevezipay

Sather on Jokinen: “He’s a proven goal scorer. In Calgary, I’m sure he was trying 2 feed Iginla all the time & the chemistry wasn’t there.”

  120. The next time Brash should play is Philly, i agree voros-brash-prust and call somebody else up for the game. Targets should be carsillo of course, how about Richards I hate that spot picker, typical Flyer. We are dreming though it’s the Rangers after all.

  121. there is no way Christensen should be playing instead of Lisin. What has this guy done to warrant all these chances. they need to move forward with Lisin, not stay still with Christensen.

  122. *Tweets from Zip:*

  123. LMAO, Mako at Jokinen’s wife comment. Linda, go easy on Oli with his nicknames, unless you want to deal with mrs Jokinen lol.

Oops, sorry for jibberish with Rusiian accent. Back to lines now..

  124. just a thought on who Jokinen should play with. Gaborik has managed 30 goals without a regular centerman, why not have Jokinen play with 2 other wingers, maybe get some secondary scoring.

  125. ROFLMAO!!!!!! poor Kots! we need to have an annual forearm contest in his honor!!

    Doodie, again, good point!

  126. Sather on Jokinen: “He’s a proven goal scorer. In Calgary, I’m sure he was trying 2 feed Iginla all the time & the chemistry wasn’t there.”

And Gaborik will be different how??

  127. Bull Dog

Agreed. Lisin has played well and deserves to be in the line up with Voros. He’s got some great speed to him and who knows what he can do now that Jokenin is with the team.

  128. stevezipay

Sather: Original deal discussed was bigger, but declines to say whether Phaneuf was involved. I say: Connect the dots.

    stevezipay

Sather on Prust, who he saw play vs Yotes: “He’s got lots of spunk to him. I always think you can never have a team that’s tough enough.”

  129. Doodie, perhaps. Except that the team with one good checking line and one great d-man will kill all our eggs in one basket.

  130. Hey Adam, thanks for that Sather on Prust quote! Comedy gold!!

I have a sneaky feeling all day long that Nostrils is gonna do well here. Can’t explain it! Just remember this… I called that Fankist goal for Mako and his dad!

  131. LIRanger Fan – Yes, Mess will be handed the GM role. That’s what scares me. I can hope he doesn’t get it though, right? If we’re gonna take anyone in the system for it, take Shoney.

  132. This is true Linda. Do you have a prediction tonight for PAPA Jaws? He is a bonehead in training.

  133. Why all the love for Schoenfeld, beyond the fact that’s he not a Sather protege? What exactly is he good at?

  134. Linda, I’m sooo hoping you’re right on Oli. I have a prediction too, but I’ll keep it to myself for a couple of reasons.

If Oli does well here, I’m sure we will all think that he has the most beautiful nostrils ever…

  135. lisin and Christianson should both be in Voros out. Bulldog I agree spead the scoring Gabby-Vinny-Christianson, then oli-cally-lisin, then Avery-Dubi-Artie, 4th Boyle-Drury-Prust. Maybe some balance we still need a upgrade in talent but better than yesterday.

  136. Dru- for a 110% of what you can give you should still be only paid a 20% of what you are paid now. Plus the inflation rate, perhaps.

  137. what people are forgetting is that the 3 mill that was saved by kotalik over the next 2 years will probably go to staal since he is a restricted fa and the rangers will lock him up before he becomes a in 2 offseasons from now

  138. I know Orr (and a few others might enjoy this) but google Katerina Jokinen and you’ll see some pages of Finnish hockey players wives.

  139. Carp, how are we supposed to talk lines here if with our coach they last together as long as Drew Barrymore lasts in her marriages?

  140. just crack out the line generator ilb…change the name to Torts, put all the new guys in, and have Brashear as prucha’d

  141. ok guys, im just gonna say that i do think some of you have the right to be cool. if im gonna spend my precious time reading this blog, i have to tell you, i want entertainment. like brendan, i just wish carp could chime in from clutch headquarters to let us know which holiday dru is planning on not ruining next and what planet prospal is originally from. fantasia?

  142. Slap me in the face!

Anyhow, who likes my new facial hair? Definitely better than Jagr’s, wouldn’t you say?

  143. Rick (No, not that one) on

I really don’t think Christensen will be here much longer.
Seems as if they are just trying to increase his value a bit before moving him.
Playing a waiver pick up on the first line is one way of doing it.

    Or not.

    LMAO, Linda

  145. does prospal come from th never ending story movie? oh btw, anybody remember the guy that rides the raciung snail? i swear, its joe beninati

  146. Jokinen means Drury in Finland on

I am actually beginning to believe that Sather is on the hot seat now.

  147. “Sather on Prust, who he saw play vs Yotes: “He’s got lots of spunk to him. I always think you can never have a team that’s tough enough.” ”

AHAHAHAHAHAHA HAS HE WATCHED ANY OF HIS TEAMS PLAY IN THE LAST FEW YEARS!?

Lisin is useless… He is Prucha all over again. Voros is good or what he does(4th liner), most irrational ranger fans dont get that.

  148. ilb

You wont find a bigger fan of Jagr than me ;) Ask wicky =P
You have to take pics of it for us !! :)

    What’s going on Linda?

  149. captain dreary on

Burke picks 4th liner Dreary for the Olympic team, and also has 2 injured dmen out needing replacements. nice job Burke. he is getting rid of guys in Toronto, but if he is such a big Dreary lover, then Sather ought to offer the little league pitcher to Burke for a used jock strap.

  150. well, you guys know I’m a “Deadliest Catch” fanatic..well, one of the captains had a stroke. GET WELL SOON PHIL!!!

  151. lmao Ghost! thats funny, but bad karma ;-) you better take it back, he’s so clutch, he may make your hair fall out or something!

  152. Ovechkin’s gf got a nice tan… wonder if she’s related to Prospal.

They met online…how sweet! was the website called “Barefooted and always pregnant Russian brides”? lol

  153. what people are forgetting is that the 3 mill that was saved by kotalik over the next 2 years will probably go to staal since he is a restricted fa and the rangers will lock him up before he becomes a in 2 offseasons from now

    ***

I have a feeling that Staal will get similar money to what Dubi and Cally got. I mean if I was his agent, I’d use those two as a good starting point at least. Staal’s current hit is about 825K, so if you use about half of Kotalik’s hit you can bump him up to around 2.25, which given his RFA status is a decent offer. From Staal’s standpoint he can argue that he’s poised to be their best shutdown D. But the Rangers can argue that for anything more than $3MM or so a year he needs to be putting up at least 40-50 points, which he doesn’t appear likely to do any time soon.

  154. Adam Z. – Shoney knows the game and he knows the business side. Messier can’t count so he’s likely to give out some laughable contracts.

Seriously though, Shoney has been through many parts of a few organizations. He’s coached, scouted, assistant coached, and assistant GMed. He’s ready for it. Messier hasn’t done anything to prepare other than watch Sather screw up.

Chris – Lisin is 10x more talented than Prucha. He’s the same in the sense that the coach doesn’t know how to use him.

And I love how people knocked Renney and made the line generator and Torts does it so much more than Renney does.

  155. Hey Linda, I may be with you soon!

My company was purchased back in the summer and slowly but surely they decided to take over and move our operations out to Kansas today. They came in, let go of ppl today and gave everyone else, including me till 3/31. And our company was on the upswing, we weren’t even in the red! Oh how I hate businesses

  156. NYRGuy – sorry to hear that about your company; I was in that same position last year. It sucks.

  157. atlanta will demand minimum a YOUNG very good forward, a top prospect and a top pick in return for Kovy.

they have zero interest in getting ANY old high paid players in return. so forget the nonsense about Joker going for Kovy

  158. oh no NYR, sorry to hear that! Is your company offering relocation, or are you pretty much stuck? Wow I really hate to hear that! We have to figure out a way to go into business for ourselves.

    BRAVO Jonny D.

  159. Yeah…definitely does…I just got out of school in May and didn’t go for my Masters right away b/c I was part of a company that was on the upswing and doing extremely well (I was there part time through college)…and then this…it’s in healthcare too! I hate when people mess with a product they don’t know about

Oh and I apologize for those who only wanted to talk about lines for tonight!

  160. Linda…there may be an opportunity to be a customer service rep from home…but I work with schools, not students, and I’m not sure if I want to do that but I may have to for the time being. I was one of 5 to be selected for the opp, so I guess that’s a good thing. And no offer to relocate, and I don’t wanna move from Jersey to Kansas anyway LOL

  161. Good luck, NYRGuy. Hope you have better success at getting another job than I have. I’m a little more than just out of college, though… ;-)

  162. Thanks lol

This is why this is the best blog in the world…it’s like a family even though we don’t even know each other

  163. Linda, I dont remember. I know for sure he won money though. He told me that the cab stops you. then refilms you getting in and tells u to look surprised. haha

  164. Doodie Machetto on

I looked at the Olympics hockey schedule. Best day of Men’s qualifiers by FAR is Sunday, February 21:

    Czech Republic v. Russia-3PM EST
    USA v. Canada-7:40PM EST
    Sweden v. Finland-Midnight

    AWESOME.

  165. ATL can demand a lot, but that doesn’t mean they’ll got a ton. ATL is painted into a tighter corner than any team that is looking to trade with them. The whole world knows by know that Kovalchuk has essentially zero interest in staying in ATL as well as testing the FA market.

Especially if they’re dealing with a team in a somewhat tight cap situation, then they might have to take back some less than desirable talent to get it done (the Rangers for example). And you know who they can thank for their diminished bargaining positioning? Their good friend Marian Hossa. After what he pulled after getting dealt to Pittsburgh, few teams are going to want to back the proverbial truck up to make a deal.

  166. I know what you mean nyrguy. me and mike are like bloodbrothers except with a blog instead and no blood. Linda, is my word feeder. word=rap. haha. bam

  167. Doodie Machetto on

eric, looked at your Staal idea. That is a possibility. More likely, Sather will blow it on another slipping veteran, probably Jokinen.

  168. lmao 909 the power of TV!! glad he won some money!

NYRGuy, well, at least you have that opportunity. If you decide its not for you, I wish you the best in your job search. I’m at the point where I”m thinking I might have to go back to retail. At my age, it’s really NOT what I want, but you have to make money.

  169. Atlanta can be alright if Kane can develop over the next few years and they can use the Kovy money smartly along with getting a few players for him. Plus Bogosian on the back end. They can be alright if they do it correctly. But that is a big IF these days.

Also, some guy in an Edmonton paper said that Pitt may trade Malkin eventually and use Crosby/Staal as 1/2 centers…interesting

  170. Phew you guys are making me dizzy today! My work’s been keeping me away, but I’m always lurking….

btw, totally psyched for LOST. I skip the commercials, too, but like listening to the ABC promos cause it’s the voice of a friend of mine.

jpg, just hearing of your wife. glad she’s OK.

    LGR!

  171. Doodie Machetto on

“After what he pulled after getting dealt to Pittsburgh, few teams are going to want to back the proverbial truck up to make a deal.”

Helping them get into the Stanley Cup finals? Pittsburgh have only themselves to blame for him not resigning.

  172. I have to go back and read the last 30 hour of post…
    But this is interesting….

New from L.A: Quotes from John Tortorella & players on Olli Jokinen, Brandon Prust, Chris Higgins, Ales Kotalik…http://bit.ly/HHgEY
    27 minutes ago from web

*From blue-notes. Sorry this is so long…*

Excerpts from today’s interview with the Rangers President and General Manager here in Los Angeles:

“We just needed some type of change to make us a little more alert, a little more aware…..

“The deal at one time was bigger, it evolves…. There were more people involved at one time.” Was Dion Phaneuf involved? “That’s all speculation, I can’t talk about guys in other organizations.”

The complications in the deal? “I think that’s something Calgary should talk about.

Did Kotalik balk because of his limited trade clause: “I wouldn’t say that he hung us up, we had to work through that. When players get traded, it’s always a shock, well, most of the times it is. It just takes a little time for him to reflect.”

On Jokinen and the pairing with Gaboirk: “He’s big, he can skate, he can shoot, he’s competitive. If they can develop the same type of chemistry, it’ll be fine, If for some reason they don’t click, we have other guys who can play there, but it gives us a lot more options. “

More on Jokinen: “We’re looking for him to step in and play the way he can play. He’s a big center-ice man who covers a lot of room in front of the net. He’s been a proven goal scorer. In Calgary, he wasn’t. I’m sure he was trying to feed (Jarome) Iginla all the time and the chemistry wasn’t always there….When he was in Florida, he had 91 points and nobody thought he get traded. Florida had budget problems. He goes to Phoenix, they had same problems. He ends up going to Calgary and didn’t have the right chemistry, I guess. I don’t think (GM) Darryl (Sutter) expected he was going to get this guy and trade him a year later. He played well in the playoffs for them and the 10 or 12 games leading into them. I think he’s in good shape.”

On Prust: “He’s got 18 fights…a tough kid, we watched him play in Phoenix. He handles the puck well, sees the ice well, got lots of spunk to him. I always think you can never have a team that’s tough enough. Except when you have too much and you can’t score.”

On Higgins: “Higgins was a good soldier, he worked hard. He did everything he possibly could do, except he had trouble scoring. For some reason, he lost his scoring touch. Even when I talked to him last night, we said he wished he could’ve scored more. It’s not as if he didn’t have the ice time or the chances….Higgins got started real well and his scoring just started to disappear on him and he starts to press, really the same thing happened with Kotalik. Fans get on him, you get tighter, a little more uptight. I always find it a mystery when a bad bounce goes over a guy’s stick and he gets blamed for it. Players are sensitive…Everybody would like to be a little more thick-skinned…

On Kotalik: “He didn’t play for nine games, it was pretty obvious we were going to have to do something. We didn’t think we were going to have to trade him either.”

On another defenseman: “We’re always looking. We thought we had enough depth in the organization, but we have six guys out in Hartford with injuries. If something else happens Schoney’s going on the point. Then we’re in real trouble. Heikkinen can come up and play.”

  173. Sather – “I always think you can never have a team that’s tough enough. Except when you have too much and you can’t score.”

    ———

now it ios christal clear what the problem is and why we cants score…

  174. So Glen, that’s great that Jokinen can score…BUT WHO IS GETTING HIM THE PUCK?!?!?

I said it before but Higgins and Kots would’ve scored a bit more if they had someone to get them the puck. Maybe not 25+ goals, but at least 10-15 by now each. We have 0 playmakers. It’s amazing Gabby has as many goals as he does. We need someone who can feed the other guys, not shoot because if he’s a shoot first guy, he’ll carry the puck into the zone and fire a shot right away instead of looking for the open man.

  175. ilb – he played hockey, he never went to school. that’s why he can’t talk and why he overpays for every free agent. I’m not even kidding.

  176. From WIKI…never knew this…

He earned the nickname “Slats” because of his gritty style of play where he would regularly aim for opposing player’s testicles with the blade of his stick.

  177. Linda – She’d probably do a better job signing free agents than Sather anyway.

Ryan – He was really upset about coming to New York. He wanted to finish his career in Calgary. Moved the family there and everything and was pretty down about leaving. I don’t think he’ll be happy in NY.

  178. he’s known as the genius, in his own mind and his dumb boss’s. Sounds like he blew some of that deal. Pheanuf was in it, by the sound of his bs.

  179. sarah has that cute personality type look to her, plus shes roomy in the hips, ohh yea!! cushion for crushin baby!! and she likes pirates!!! hey, good for her that she cant read. dont want her smarter than me anyway. id go digging for her buried treasure anytime. maybe i should see if shes on i-harmony

  180. jonny D,
every winger the Rangers have(or had) would have more goals if they had a decent play making center. how would you go about getting them.
eric, I would not give Staal big money, he is not worth it, very overrated.

  181. Nah Burke gave Sutter a better offer. Burke found out about the Calgary scouts at the Rangers game (probably thanks to MSG network) and knew it was a great chance to go after Phaneuf. Can’t blame Sather on it. Plus we’re much better off without Phaneuf. 6.5 million a year for a bum of a defenseman that gets a decent amount of points, throws some big hits, but sucks terribly in his own end.

  182. bull dog – agree on the Staal point. he’s solid, but not worth big money.

as for playmaking centers, try to get one in a trade. We have Jokinen now who is actually attractive for some teams. The problem is that we went into this year thinking Dubinsky was that playmaking guy when hes not. He has terrible offensive vision. Definitely skilled, but his vision of the ice is not all that great.

Arty is probably our best playmaking center right now because when his head is actually up, he sees the open guys. We could try to find the rare playmaking wingers and bring them in if possible. Not saying we should go after him (we can’t because he’s hurt), but a winger like Hemsky would help our drastically. Thats one thing about Dawes is that he saw the ice incredibly well despite the fact he was a midget. I would’ve loved to see Radim Vrbata on the team, but he seems to only play well in Phoenix.

Either we trade for one at the deadline to set us up for next year or we try to move some pieces around in the offseason and sign a guy who is out there. I have to look at the list of UFA forwards, but I’m sure there are a few. That, and I want Joe Corvo to QB the PP. He’ll be cheap coming off the injury he had this year (he’ll have a full recovery though).

  183. i’m guessing jonny D, That if the Ranger had a couple of good centermen they would not have had to trade Kotalik. he never had a regular center to play with this season. would not be surprised to see him score a few for his new team. I felt right from the start of training camp that Higgins was taking things for granted, and it showed with his lack of production.

  184. Dreger:

Oilers pushing trade hard. Moreau and others, but deals unlikely unless Edmtn sweetens the pot.
about 2 hours ago from mobile web

  185. Hemsky’s done for the year though and I think he’s one of the only guys the Oilers want to hold on to along with Gagner.

  186. ilb

Its feel great to be home. But back to work tomorrow :(

Dont know yet. That’s all what Dreger “tweeted” I never thought it would be a “twitterer” LOL

  187. bull dog – yeah Kotalik isn’t a guy who could skate the puck up ice and score. Higgins kind of did at first, but he turned his act around towards the end here. He’s another guy who needs a playmaker. When he got time with Plekanac, he scored goals. When he was playing with 3rd and 4th liners, he didn’t. Not saying they were great players by any means, but a real center would’ve helped them out a ton. Jokinen will have a similar problem.

Shoryuken – thanks for that vid. Nik is still one of my favorite players and I think he was just completely misunderstood and mislabeled during his time here in the NHL.

  188. Shor

Thank you for that Link. Its great to see Nikki Z again! Glad he’s doing well in the KHL.

  189. i hope i can make it through the game tonight!!

hmmmm i think i’m gonna order one of ricks books from amazon!!

  190. Shor- I just looked at that interview. The translation doesn’t do any justice at all. I want CCCP to look at it too. I don’t think he is very happy there and I think he would go back to NHL in a heartbeat. At least this is what his tone of voice and his choice of words told me.

Btw, the guy who interviewed him is a total amateur. Bush League!. Joe Beninati is a pro comparing to him.

  191. say what you want but i think slats wanted phaneuf real bad.

to me, it looks like slats had a deal for phaneuf. burke said he had called sutter multiple times throughout the year and asked about phaneuf’s availability but sutter never budged. After the rangers put an offer on the table for phaneuf, sutter called burke to see if the leafs had a better deal. sutter decided on the leaf package (which was probably better) and then told slats he’d still take higgins and kotalik off his hands but that phaneuf was off the table.

it’s pretty strange to me. i wonder who, in addition to higgins and kotalik, we’re involved in the deal and i wonder if jokinen and prust we’re even a part of the original deal.

even more strange is how i can’t get over slats thinking avery and phaneuf could coexist on the same squad. talk about a disaster in the locker room.

i’m pretty certain that kovalchuk won’t be coming to ny but i don’t think slats is done yet.

  192. Niki Z didn’t sound too happy… left off of the KHL All-Star team…left off of Russian National roster…playing in Siberia…OUCH! He’ll come back very soon…will it be to play for the Rangers again? I wouldn’t mind…

And yes, the guy who was interviewing is a total bush-league! Cheesy questions and at the end of the interview for whatever reason goes in broken English “Niki Zherdev”… what a schmuck!

  193. My guess is that Callahan and Gilroy probably would have been part of the Phaneuf trade.
Those 2 names were floating around a lot yesterday.

  194. gosh what a long thread…i skimmed

i’m kind of excited to see the new guys and to not see the old guys o_O just kind of sucks for higgins to get traded from home to the tundra but they earned their trip to siberia

the joker has some skill and is playing for pay so he should do well

i watched some prust fights so i’m ready to see him make a statement early.

  195. I think Olli will be fine because as Walt Frazier would say he can still dish it as he’s always been an underrated playmaker, so even if no one can get him the puck, he can get other people the puck.

Nik Z won’t be back as long as Torts is in control. Too bad. I liked him a lot. Very misunderstood and he just wasn’t developed in the right place or in the right way.

  196. Well as a fluffer of Higgins in the off season, and as someone who was very happy when he landed here. I honestly dont know what the Byfuglien was up with him this year. I thought he would get along great with guys like Duby and Cally(American/Younger/Forechecker/decent points)…but as we all know he fell completely flat and I’m glad hes gone. I wont be suprised if he has a great year/career ahead of him, like some of the other recent players that have been dealt. Kotalik speaks for himself that guy is finished. I should know better but im looking foreward to Vinny-Oli-Gabo, Duby-Christ-Cally, Aves-Dru-Enver, Prust-Artie-Voros. Along with Fire Sather Tshirts, start making Wolfpack Brashit jersey/tshirts.

  197. okay, 2 things….

    1) just watched Phaneuf fight White.
Dion wears a shield. i thought you get an extra 2 for having a shield and not taking it off during a fight?

  198. 2) happened to catch NHL Live earlier today….shortly after noon……..and one of the guests via phone was Brock Beukeboom.
sounds like he’s got a good head on his shoulders.
liked what he said about fighting and the advice from his dad.
basically, that a lot of it is for show nowadays
and if that’s the case he doesn’t bother
    but
he will if he’s avenging a dirty play or something like that.

  199. wow anyone catch the leafs intermission?
    rippin on sather

    did i miss something
    kotalik 3yr 3 mil
    is he worth it

    well sather thought so

    drury
    gomez
    etc

  200. Knew you’d like that Linda :)

I’m off for the LOST marathon tonight…usually DVR but not on opening night! If they kill Sawyer this season I will start a new rally to fire…somebody!

    TA!

  201. No problem…I love the Jagr “email” asking for Kovy’s information.

I’ll be MIA until the LOST marathon is over as well. Namaste!

  202. count von count! LMAO!!!
Roger Goodell has rejected your friend request!
It’s really hard to clean this thing with Stephane Auger swept under it!!!!!!!!

    LMFAO!!!!!

    Great find Noah!!

  203. yea tony, you know, the person at the hotel who fluffs up your pillows and put the little chocolates or mints on them.

  204. Yeah I was going to post that…. but I remember you cant link two websites on one comment post.

    Nice try Orr LOL

  205. Wait a minute, I barely started reading the Brooks article and he quotes Sather, “I always think you can never have a team that’s tough enough.” WHAT? Glen, your team has been a bunch of pussies, who never fight for each other, for years. Maybe it’s a misprint. Maybe he really said, “I always think you can never have a team that sucks enough.”

  206. Haha, did anyone watch the Devils intermission when they were talking aboot childhood food they love. Broduer had a field day. No wonder why he struggles with his weight.

Popcorn, Fries with gravy, and ice cream, and yogurt all for dinner, with Lamchops on the side.

    Hahaha !

  207. to the idiot who put the LA kings over the Rangers…you either with the Rangers or against us….i dont care how bad the rangers are…least of all a team from L.A.

  208. Love how Sather blames fans for putting pressure on Kotalik, and booing if the puck jumped over his stick. It sure seemed like it was Tortorella who wouldn’t forgive him for every error, while we watched Drury get away with everything. Do Rangers management really think blaming the fans for management’s obvious problems is the solution? The arrogance and inability of Sather to grasp reality is astounding.

  209. The arrogance and inability of Sather to grasp reality is astounding.

loveit! PAY NOT ATTENTION TO THAT ASS BEHIND THE CURTAIN!

now we all know why Crazy Yeti doesnt talk to the Press! He can’t for complete sentences,or ones that make sense!

SPIN SPIN SPPPPPPPPIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN OH SOULLESS ONE

  210. Toronto fans are happy they are leading the Devils, 3-0. The shoe is playing I like Freddie.

  211. A little “Did ya notice”….

Did ya notice how pathetic our PP has been since Tortorella has declared that Chris Drury is needed on the point?

I definitely get the feeling Kotalik will show a much better game in Calgary. Not that he wasn’t EXTREMELY overpaid and underperformed here…but Torts love of all things Drury is still crippling this team on a nightly basis.

  212. From Brooks:

Jokinen: “The media cost the Flames two points last night.”
    7 minutes ago from web

  213. Toronto finally has a real PKing forward, Freddy Sjostrom, first forward to block a shot on the PK for Toronto this year…

Still miss Sjostrom, he was great — and great article on Z, miss him as well.

Name the 3 D-man to have scored 20 goals in their first NHL Season, Brian Leetch, Dion Phaneuf and?

  214. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

    Ignorance is bliss, Rangers fans.

I find it amusing guys calling out Johnny D. What i read, this guy knows hockey… actually more than most the guys calling him out (hedberg).

  215. “Love how Sather blames fans for putting pressure on Kotalik, and booing”

Which came first, lousy play or booing?

He was booed because his play was lousy, so blaming his crappy playing on the booing makes no sense.

  216. Harsh words by Engblom for Jokinen…can’t say I disagree lol

Could be disasterous putting him with Gabby according to him.

I don’t think they should put him with Gabby anyway, Gabby doesn’t need him

  217. Kotalik is certainly no Torts player, and over all he was bad in NY. He may fit in the Calgary line up and play well, but personally I doubt it. The GM & president of the Calgary flames was on TV tonight, and he seemed to think he would fit right in.

  218. ddebened February 2nd, 2010 at 8:55 pm

Shoot the Puck, Barry, Shoot the Puck

    Barry Beck

    NICE

  219. Beth – Ever heard of the Pet Rock?

A million rocks sold for $3.95 apiece in just a few months back in the 70’s.

Unfortunately, one day Linda was not paying attention blasting her Toot-A-Loop Radio, and her’s was hit by a car.

  220. i had NEITHER a toot a loop radio NOR a pet rock that was paid for ;-)

i DID have metal roller skates with a skate key and a donny osmond pillowcase

  221. ORR!! cluster*&%$ should be a Ranger, what a great name!
whose that other guy with the funny name…boychik as beninati says it!

  222. In case you missed it!!!

Tune in to MSG right now for the 1,345th showing of the Chris Drury ProFiles!!!

YES!!! Remember how lucky you all are that we have the greatest clutch player in NHL history on our team!!

I throw up a little in my mouth whenever they play this propoganda piece…and they play it CONSTANTLY!

  223. are they seriously playing that AGAIN???? wow, as much as I hate not being in NY and getting the pre and post game shows, I am sooooo glad i havent seen that piece of brainwashing

  224. Devils were shut out by Giggy. Congratz to GIGGY!

And a BIG congratulations to the Juggernaut of the Eastern Conference Washington Caps! 11 in a row!

  225. definitely not – just different personalities based on how many Blue Moons I’ve had lol

BTW, I was on the Boneheads page the other day, checking things out and I got one of the scare-ware pages. Anyone else have any problems?

  226. “I throw up a little in my mouth whenever they play this propoganda piece…and they play it CONSTANTLY!”

    ***************************************

LMAO!!!!!! Its funny ’cause its true. WHO WANTS A SLICE OF CLUTCHARONI!??! with a side plate of “little things and intangibles”

  227. From Bob McKenzie:

Boston Bruins have made it known to teams throughout the league that Michael Ryder is available for trade.
    21 minutes ago from UberTwitter

  228. i got one of those earlier today when i clicked on Krisy’s link!! dont know why. waited 2 hours, clicked again and no problem! I was freakin out because that crap was what infected my last computer! I think its actually something with facebook, because it’s happened to me before, just clicking on the my puppy thingie

  229. Linda, I honestly think it’s repeated several times a week. And if it’s not the ProFiles it’s the Game 365 show on him.

I guess to the people who don’t actually watch or know hockey, they’ll watch the special and think that Chris Drury is the second coming of Mark Messier.

To anyone with half a brain and who has seen this putz in a Rangers jersey, they know it’s propaganda trying to sell an overpaid, has-been mercenary as the heart and soul of the Rangers.

“The only place I wanted to play was the New York Rangers” Drury says…

So needing a no-trade clause to turn down an offer from LA has nothing to do with his love of the Rangers? Jeeeeeeez

  230. orr…”Rangers waive Brash*t”….time to change your diaper and get back in your crib……

  231. Devils score with 7.7 seconds left in 1994 to tie Game 7 against the Rangers…

Thanks to Stephane Matteau, we survive.

Chris Drury scores with 7.7 seconds left to tie Game 5 against the Rangers…

And the damage is still being felt…

Funny how 7.7 seconds is common with both the highest and lowest points of this franchise.

At least Matteau had the balls to admit he got paid because of one goal and didn’t earn it otherwise.

When’s Drury gonna admit the same? LOL

  232. Bklynblue

Orr’s been joking around with fake trades forever. It does no harm to anyone …. let the kid have his fun.

  233. I almost cant wait for someone to crash into lundy tonight

lets hope olli is a better #12 than daigle

  234. Tonight would be a great night to have the chat. The chaos & shenanigans that would go on there would be historical for the Bonehead Nation LOL

  235. MAKO, I’ve been a fan since 1979 (I’m 37) and a die-hard since ’89…So I’ve seen plenty and most of it hasn’t been good. LOL.

My hatred of Drury comes from many angles. But mostly it’s the fact that he’s got this huge myth about him. I’ve watched almost every game of his tenure here and all I see is a small player who rarely hustles, can’t shoot, can’t pass and seems awfully disinterested in what’s going on around him.

Yay, he blocks shots. Woo Bleepin Hoo.

Can’t blame the guy for taking the money…but stop lying about how this was the only place you wanted to play. And stop plugging your dumb ass pizza place.

Captain material this guy certainly is not.

  236. Linda, Stogiepuss is going to be interviewed by Giannone. I’m sure he’ll ask all the hard hitting questions, like if he knows about the Fire Sather rally lol

  237. ThisYearsModel on

OK. In a hotel in Des Moines watching on the computer. Hope the Rangers make it worthwhile.
