You guys are always a step ahead. You had the Vinny Lecavalier discussion yesterday, and it took off today with Vinny and the Lightning in town to play the Rangers on (god forbid) Versus.
I would normally think, if you could get a team to give you a legit first-line talent AND take Wade Redden’s contract, and even if it cost you a good young player or prospect or draft pick, then do it.
But the thing with Lecavalier is the length of the contract, and therefore the cap hit. If the hit goes all the way out to 2019, there is no way you can take on Vinny or his contract, no matter how much comes off the books by ridding yourselves of Redden. There aren’t enough adjectives to even imagine describing what Lecavalier’s cap hit will mean, and how severely it will handcuff the Rangers in the latter part of this decade.
I don’t care what he would do for the immediate team, or what his relationship to John Tortorella. That’s a lethal contract that nobody, least of all a 30-year-old who may already be in decline, could justify. And isn’t that why he’s available in the first place?
I’m on the way to MSG later on. See youse then.
