Ocho’s out, Zaba’s in

This is just a wordy way of saying that Chad Johnson is not going to get any starts for the next few days, so he’s going to Hartford to play some games while Matt Zaba (zaba-doo) backs up Henrik Lundqvist here. Ocho will be back, I’d think, before the back-to-backs on the weekend.

From the Rangers:

New York, January 10, 2010 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that goaltender Chad Johnson has been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL), and Matt Zaba has been recalled from Hartford.
Johnson, 23, registered one assist, made 31 saves through regulation/overtime and stopped three of five shootout attempts while making his first career NHL start on Thursday at Atlanta.  In two appearances with the Rangers, Johnson has registered one assist and posted an 0-0-1 record with a 2.29 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.  He made his NHL debut with 17 saves on December 30 vs. Philadelphia.  Johnson returns to Hartford where he has appeared in 22 games with the Wolf Pack this season, posting a 12-7-2 record with a 2.07 goals against average, .927 save percentage and three shutouts.  He ranked fifth in the AHL in goals against average, and was tied for fourth in shutouts, seventh in save percentage and eighth in wins at the time of his recall on Tuesday.  Johnson registered a season-high four-game winning streak, beginning with his first career AHL shutout on October 31 against Providence to November 7 at Bridgeport.  He also notched back-to-back shutouts on November 13 vs. Manchester (26 saves) and November 14 at Worcester (35 saves).  The AHL rookie made his debut with Hartford on October 9 at Providence, and recorded his first AHL win the following game on October 10 against Springfield.
The Calgary, Alberta native was originally the Pittsburgh Penguins’ fifth round selection, 125th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.  He was acquired by the Rangers on June 27, 2009, in exchange for a fifth round selection (Andy Bathgate) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Zaba, 26, registered a combined 2.01 goals against average and .932 save percentage (55-59) in back-to-back games this weekend – a 5-2 win at Worcester on Friday and a 3-1 loss at Albany on Saturday.  He has posted a 2-3-1 record with a 3.59 goals against average and .884 save percentage in 10 games with Hartford this season.  Last season, Zaba ranked seventh in the AHL in goals against average (2.33), tied for eighth in save percentage (.920) and 12th in wins (25).  He also led the league in shootout save percentage with a .930% success rate.  Zaba was named AHL Goaltender of the Month for February, and he finished the regular season with a 14-2-0 mark and a 1.84 goals against average, a .937 save percentage and one shutout in his final 16 contests.  He made his AHL debut on October 18, 2008, at Toronto.  In addition, Zaba has dressed as Henrik Lundqvist’s backup in two games with the Rangers this season.
The Yorkton, Saskatchewan native was originally the Los Angeles Kings eighth round selection, 231st overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.  He was signed by the Rangers as a free agent on August 20, 2007.

  1. Yeah, I would think in St. Loo or the next night vs. Montreal … then one game on that three-game western trip at the end of the month.

    love the costanza popcorn link!!

    Predictably…i got FRAKKING CARPED!!!

yep, that is where he had all his success (read cups) and everything else is just an after thought (except to some ranger fans). I will admit I miss hockey on ESPN and i miss it even more hearing clement and thorne on nhl10!

  3. I agree with Grabby. Hank more often than not just flat out sucks against the Habs.

Play Ocho Cinco in that game, for sure.

Cant wait to watch a 15 minute Devil game later. I hope thousands of mice run through the stands this time, causing a riot. Actually there’s probably not enough people to officially call it a riot.

  4. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

Another young player who shows potential, won’t blossom in NY, but my have his development stunted in NY. Fantastic. Let’s ruin another prospect, and then ship him to wherever Lundmark, Dawes, and Malhotra play.

  5. from last thread, i wasnt involved in, but im from the same area as linda and youve got gold. i cant remember all teh long island pizza places i went to or had, but bella roma is a good one, alfredos in ridge is pretty good too. had plenty of pizza in teh city, which is better, but right now, anything beats iowa pizza. for all you guys down on the southern east coast youre pizza is probably better. and AZ too tony. do you know that they actually havesomethin called a texan pizza? its a pizza with lettuce, tomato, taco sauce, and crunched up doritos!! its blasphemous and just a slap in any ny’ers face. just leave it where it should be, at taco smell!! then they have this abomination called the buffalo chicken pizza. ohh man i will say no more because it ruins both hot wings and pizza at teh same time!! i almost oredered it just for a goof, but i couldnt bring myself to pay for it, so my friend did and he loved it, well of course u loved it ahole cuz u never had real pizza before!! i just wish the iowa folk would crawl out of their little hole in the ground like the hobbits of teh shire that they are, and invest in an actual pizza place or restaurant for that matter and stop the communization of food!!!

  6. Good afternoon Boneheads.

TR never tire of the Costanza popcorn clip!

    Not to change the subject–
They’re having a love fest in Philly over Blair Betts. He scored goals 5 & 6 last night… artical in local paper today saying he’s one of the top 3 on the Flyers…”Betts is the Flyers’ best faceoff center. He’s their best penalty killer. He’s their best forechecker. He sets a tempo with the way he plays, skating hard night in and night out. His energy, along with that of linemates Ian Laperriere and Dan Carcillo, has blurred the gap between the third and fourth lines.
They make up a unit that most teams in the NHL dream of having as a fourth line. How many fourth lines offer 12 goals, 16 assists, the best shot-blocking penalty-kill duo in the game, and average about 13 minutes of ice time a game?”
    And all that for $550,000…

does anyone else get the feeling that if it wan’t for his affinity for being out west, souray would be a ranger??

  8. Orr how’s my contract with cigarpuss coming along? I’m getting ready to take Redden’s spot on the blueline. Crease clearer time

  9. I think Sather is gna try and pull souray from Edmonton which if he can get rid of redden in the process wouldnt be a bad idea. Theres a guy named tom there that used to give redden lots of minutes

  10. joke- its been said here that grachev isnt doing that well in hartford so far. but hes still very young. he was a 3rd rounder and last season in the ohl was way below his talent level. thats why everybody that wants to rush up grachev to the rangers need to see this kid develop and play against similar talent. i doubt hes gonna be a bust at all, but the hype was a little overboard. he will be much better off in hartford for a year maybe 2. get him a few games next season up here like they did with cally and duby. i do think that there is somethin there with grachev, but hes gotta climb the ladder just liken everyone else. hes gotta see thats why papsmear and byers gota shot before he did. i dont follow the pack like u or mikeA for example, but it could be his getting used to the NA style and hes gotta adjust. idk what is the reason but he’ll be fine. just gonna take awhile for him t make an impact. he played fairly decent during preseason, but u could see the difference with AA and him. u could see how harder it is for AA to doiminate now like he did in preseason, so u could see the kid needs at least another full year in hartford maybe getting a few games next season, but hes gotta earn it. hopefully he does.

  11. lmao @ NYRGuy!! I’m on his ‘other’ one, where “he’s” actually replied to discussion topics. I wonder if any of them are real! Either way, the guys is a miracle for this team!

  12. we should invite DRURY to the page tony, he can give all of us tips on how to be CLUTCH in every situation of life! WOO HOO wouldnt THAT be grand!

  13. RAN

Ive been playing NHL10 all day. You’ll get used to that. I just cant leave the game while im hot.

I think Dubi is going to Edmonton, along with Danny G, and maybe a prospect or pick, and we’ll get Cogliano, and Souray.

    Souray will definitely come here.

  14. BANJ says replace Redden with Revis! on

Sunday 4:40pm Jets-Chargers…7pm Rangers Montreal a little overlap, but we can handle that!

  15. NYRGuy Maybe one of Prucha’d players act as assistants were answering for him in the pressbox.

  16. With our offensive problems, I don’t think Torts would agree to swapping Dubi for Cogliano…it doesn’t make sense

And Torts said Staal and Girardi are his 2 best DMen…he won’t trade one of his 2 best to get Souray and a guy like Cogliano

  17. Drury wouldn’t give us any good tips until the very last second, when we needed them the most.

  18. name is clutch clutch, i speak but my actions don’t say much
I speak tongue in cheek, with 7.5 million in the bank things never lookin bleek. thats weak, 7.7 seconds was my peak
A clutch clause and 30 million more is what i seek
My jobs to hold Sathers Johnson(oh wait? goalie?) while he takes a leak. Your point is moot. yeah 7.5 million is all i’m aboot.

  19. Evening, heads! Loved pizza discussion. If someone is interested in gourmet pizza places in Brooklyn and SI, let me know, I can direct you.

Cogliano isn’t the answer to our first line center issue. And Dubi is just starting to find his new way to score while on the wing. I’d wait with that trade for now. Not to mention, what are we going to use as our FB page picture? :)

  20. great white,

good points. and since you mentioned byers, I just want to say that he did play a pretty solid game and was engaged physically. he was also wearing the C.

  21. wicky229 (gabby, just get 27 more!!) on

    bro, you are hilarious!!!!

Question for everyone……which kind of tv do you guys think is better to have in the 40 to 50 inch range, plasma or lcd??

  22. Great White … I felt the same way about Buffalo chicken pizza … until I tried it. I am a convert. Though I prefer chicken parm, scarpariello or marsala pizza.
