Ouch. They just showed the 2002 New Year’s Eve game in Raleigh, which dredged up all sorts of bad memories for me … spending all those New Year’s Eves on the road. That one was particularly terrible. I remember the game was bad (the Rangers won, but good God were they bad). I remember the clown at the hotel bar wanted to close before midnight. There was another New Year’s Eve in Denver where these rednecks were firing guns in the street. There was one in Edmonton when it was 14-below.
For that 2002 game , it had already been determined that I was leaving the beat. I was down to my last few games at that point, and with a lot of mixed emotions.
