The official word from the NYR:

NEW YORK RANGERS TRANSACTION/PRACTICE UPDATE
New York, December 3, 2009 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that goaltender Chad Johnson and defenseman Ilkka Heikkinen have been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL), and goaltender Steve Valiquette has been assigned to Hartford.
Johnson, 23, has appeared in 18 games with Hartford this season, posting a 10-6-1 record with a 2.10 goals against average, .926 save percentage and three shutouts.  He is currently tied for second in the AHL in shutouts, fifth in wins, eighth in save percentage, and ninth in goals against average.  Johnson registered a season-high four-game winning streak, beginning with his first career AHL shutout on October 31 against Providence to November 7 at Bridgeport.  He also notched back-to-back shutouts on November 13 vs. Manchester (26 saves) and November 14 at Worcester (35 saves).  The AHL rookie made his debut with Hartford on October 9 at Providence, and recorded his first AHL win the following game on October 10 against Springfield.
Prior to joining Hartford, Johnson appeared in 79 games over four seasons with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), posting a 25-34-11 record with a 2.33 goals against average.  Last season, he earned CCHA Player of the Year and CCHA Goalie of the Year honors, and was named to the CCHA First All-Star Team after establishing career-highs in wins (14), goals against average (1.66), save percentage (.940) and shutouts (six) in 35 appearances.  Johnson was also selected to the NCAA West All-American Second Team, and was a top ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in collegiate hockey.
The Calgary, Alberta native was originally the Pittsburgh Penguins’ fifth round selection, 125th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.  He was acquired by the Rangers on June 27, 2009, in exchange for a fifth round selection (Andy Bathgate) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Heikkinen, 25, has skated in 24 games with Hartford this season, registering five goals and 11 assists for 16 points, along with eight penalty minutes.  He is currently tied for fifth among AHL defensemen in goals, sixth in points and ninth in assists.  He also ranks second on Hartford overall in shots (54), fifth in points, and is tied for second on the team in shorthanded goals (one), third in assists and seventh in goals.  Heikkinen has recorded four multi-point performances on the season, including two multi-assist efforts.  He tallied a point (assist) in his AHL debut on October 3 at Binghamton, and notched his first career AHL goal on October 11 at Providence.
The Rauma, Finland native skated in 283 career SM-liiga games with Lukko and HIFK over six seasons prior to joining Hartford, registering 31 goals and 82 assists for 113 points, along with 255 penalty minutes.  He finished last season ranked third among all SM-liiga defensemen in points (34) and led HIFK defensemen in goals (eight), assists (26) and points, while finishing second on the team overall in assists, fourth in points and seventh in goals.  In 2007-08, he established SM-liiga career-highs in goals (11), assists (26), points (37), and penalty minutes (96).
Heikkinen signed with the Rangers as a free agent on May 20, 2009.
Valiquette, 32, has appeared in six games with the Rangers this season, posting a record of 2-3-0 with a 3.74 goals against average, .852 save percentage and one shutout.  He registered his fourth career shutout with an 18-save effort in his season debut on October 11 against Anaheim.

  1. This from The Hockey News – info on Christianson – take a special look at the “Career Potential” scouting report – you could sub this line in for ANY of the Sather picks the last five years or so

ASSETS: Owns a big shot and excellent offensive instincts. Has good size. Can play all three forward positions and is a good face-off man. Excels in shootouts.
FLAWS: Loses a lot of puck battles in the corners. Doesn’t do the little things that help win hockey games. Takes too many shifts off to maximize his scoring potential.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Inconsistent forward with great hands.

  2. CARPED !

“February 10: John Tortorella hospitalized due to a burst blood vessel in his forehead. Paramedics did not know what to do because he was speaking gibberish and they thought he was having a stroke. Turns out he was just saying “safe is death” in Italian”

Hahaha, i can just see that now, Torts grabbing the paramedic by his collar and whispering in his ear “safe is death” in italian. Buahaha, that makes for a great episode of Hard Knocks:Hockey Edition.

Pretty cool to see Heineken get the call up. Hopefully he plays.
And by the way, that Lisin trade was a joke. It still amazes me that people fall for that. It’s ME !! I do it like 12 times during the season, and like 8 times for another team during the deadline.

Kind of like when i said Gabby got traded to the Pens at the deadline last year, and everyone went nuts. Haha, that was funny.

Penis, and Beer make their debut in Buffalo !!!!

  3. I’m surprised it took so long for the Rangers to figure out that they should put Dubinsky on LTIR to facilitate this move, but they could have dropped Voros and nobody would cry.

  4. Gross misconduct on

here from Gross is his explanation as to why they don’t put guys on LTIR without thought of later in the season ramifications
    ———————————

    Gross…

“As for the cap, I know there were some questions as to why the Rangers didn’t put Brandon Dubinsky or Donald Brashear on Long-term injured reserve. Doing so would allow the Rangers to temporarily exceed the salary cap to afford the team some flexibility. However, one disadvantage is that the team is then not saving salary cap space for use later in the season, when it might need it around the trade deadline.”

  5. REPOST

Here’s a fun game to play while we wait for Saturday:

What was the single best and single worst TRADE the Rangers made in the 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s, and 2000’s?

Carp, looking forward to hearing your nominations.

  6. Well, 2000s best is easy. Anson Carter for Jaromir Jagr. So is the 90s: Messier.

I wonder if calling up Heikkinen means Redden isn’t quite ready, or if it’s just insurance if he isn’t.

Oh yeah, Steven Seagal Lawman is carpin’ awesome. Watch it.

  7. How does it not save space for later in the season? When the injured player returns and the player that replaced him leaves, you will be pretty much in the same position as if you dropped a player to add a different one, depending on differences in salaries of course.

  8. HEIKKINEN!!!!

    so friggen excited!

ive been watching him for a bit now. very excited about the possibility of him being on the point for the power play.

  9. Orr

I used to love Seagal and Van Damme when I was a kid. I think I’ve seen Under Siege and Bloodsport like 1000 times each. Still the only two actors/actresses who can get me to buy straight-to-DVD movies. I don’t care how bad actors they are, though I think they catch too much flack when there are far worse (Vin Diesel, any rapper, etc.).

Another rookie d-man isn’t what we need, but they probably wanna see what Heikkinen’s got. Give him a chance. He can’t be worse than Roszival, can he?

  10. i missed a lot of stuff about warren
who is planning on going on the 12th? ill get you guys a table now and then ill end up meeting you all after the game.

  11. Adam Z

    Worst
    70’s-Middleton for Hodge
80’s-Ridley/Miller for Carpenter who turned into a washed up Dionne.
    90’s-Zubov/Nedved for Robitaille/Samuelson
    00’s-instead of trades-aLL OF THE F.A. Signings.

    Best
70’s-Irvine for JD (don’t know how correct)
    80’s-6 players for Barry Beck
    90’s-Getting Messier
    00’s-Jagr

  12. CCCP- it’s good. We’ve seen this team making playoffs 4 years in a row. Happy with that. But we also know how far they can go. Not too far. Not with the have beens. We need to see more young, home grown blood. That’ll push the team further. Not this year, but in a few.

  13. Worst trade of the 2000s is a tie between a young Mike Knuble for a washed up Rob Dimiao, and Zidlicky/Kloucek/Murray for Dunham.

Yeah, poor Thomas K’s career never recovered before the trade but Zidlicky could have been the PP point man to work with Leetch.

  14. this is all great news imho

i thought heikkinen looked good in tc

anisimov i had penciled in for first line center maybe someday if all worked out because of his creativity with the puck, i just didn’t think it would be so soon.

youth movement is now fully under way it seems. might as well get these guys some play time now unless you think we’re winning the cup this year o_O

why does our training camp take 4 months though? chad for valli was plainly obvious in september. anisimov the only one with hands to play with gabby and vinny, same thing.

as for trades, i dont know about best or worst ever, but i didnt like the rangers trading gartner…he shoulda been with us for the cup.

  15. Those are some pretty good/bad trades, and obvious ones, for sure.

Here’s the worst trade in NHL history: Vancouver trades Cam Neely and a first-round pick (Glen Wesley) to Boston for Barry Pederson.

Only the Middleton trade comes close to that.

  16. the Rangers are doing pretty well in PP and Pk stats. it is 5-on-5 where they are failing

the only plus players on the team are Gabby +8, Dubi +7, Vinny +6, Gilroy +2, and Avery +1

Kotalik is -12, and Higgins is -10, Drury -7, and useless huggy is a pathetic minus 7 in very limited minutes

it becomes quite obvious who are the biggest problems up front

  17. “stats” Kotalik played a bunch with the 4th line. So…. most of that -12 was being paired with huggy bear AND he spent some time with Captain Mouth Chew.

I’ll give him a pass for about -6 of “minuses” LOL

  18. what about the lindros trade? i’m just saying (well wikipedia really):

In 1992, the Nordiques worked out trades for him with both the New York Rangers, and Philadelphia Flyers. Eventually an arbitrator, Larry Bertuzzi (granduncle of Todd Bertuzzi),[4] ruled in favour of the Flyers, for whom Lindros played from 1992 to 2000, most of the time as the team’s captain.[5]

Many consider this trade a key reason that the Colorado Avalanche (the new name of the Nordiques after they relocated before the 1995 season), went on to be an NHL powerhouse. They received in the trade eventual Hart Trophy winner Peter Forsberg, as well as Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Mike Ricci, Kerry Huffman, Steve Duchesne, a 1st round selection (Jocelyn Thibault) in 1993, a 1st round selection (later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, later traded to the Washington Capitals – Nolan Baumgartner) in 1994, and $15,000,000 cash. Since the trade, the Avalanche have won eight division titles and two Stanley Cup championships, due in part to the play of Forsberg, and the later addition of Patrick Roy, whom the Avalanche received in a later package deal that included Thibault.[6]

The trade between the Nordiques and the Rangers that was ruled invalid by the arbitrator had Lindros being traded for Doug Weight, Tony Amonte, Alexei Kovalev, John Vanbiesbrouck, three first round draft picks (1993, 1994 & 1995) and $12 million.[7]

    .[thanks wikipedia]

  19. (Singing)…Come to think of it, I’ll have a Heikkinen…
Come on, old school guys, join me!

Patrick, come on down! It’ll be fun to watch the game with a head! Before the 12th I’ll tell you exactly where you can find me….

TR, so far, you, me, Patrick, I believe ilb, and, um, your two regulars (J and S) :) So yeah, get the booth, we’re at least 6 post game….gonna be fun!

  20. Carp, I agree on that Neely trade 100% There are some good power forwards in the league, but When Neely had to retire, I consider it the last of the real “true” power forwards.

  21. Forgot another thought re: trades….

22, you dissed my dance partner!

OK, maybe not the worst trade, but hey, Beezer! That broke my heart.

  22. I hope Sangs getting sent down for another prospect to take his spot doesn’t ruin his Christmas…

    Oh wait, wrong guy.

But seriously, i hope he’s not a baby aboot this, and takes it like a man, and uses this to fuel his fire, and become what we all hope he can be. It would be great to one day have Sangs, and Del Z on the point on the PP, doing massive damage.

I don’t get why the Hawks signed Toews to only a 5 year deal, but Keith to a 13 year deal. Kind of strange to me. Keith is really good, but you’d think they don’t want to worry aboot this same deal in 5 years with Toews, or Kane.

Eh, still gonna be a damn good team for a long time, only if they get the goaltending.

  24. TR, definitely….I think we’ll have enough people (if not more maybe, but that’s OK) and if people don’t show then we’ll at least have our booth and room for, um, S’s friends :)

P.S. Tell J hey and can’t wait to catch up….

  25. Nasty, most folks show up after…(TR, listen to me, I’m an expert :)

I go for the game cause I have to train in, so I’d miss the game if I waited for the late group. Trust me, it’s a great place to watch (all TVs on game), but if you want to show up after, the party is just getting started, so no worries.

If you want to go and find us, let me know and I’ll give you the info u need.

TR, I am the new blog warren door master :)

  26. Yeah, I think I can definitely go in for the game. I have to train in too. Want me email or my blackberry PIN or something?

  27. Nasty, I am so happy! So far 2 heads watching game with mama, and more after….TR, book that booth!

Nasty, save the contact info. I’d love your atm pin now :) but the rest will get lost in mail during my week off. I’ll e-mail you before the 12th, and Patrick too, so we can all connect….

  28. Nasty, got it :)
See, this is why Carp needs a separate way to get comments of of the week, or he has to wade (not redden) through all my crap…

warren folks, we’ll all catch up when I get back back, or e-mail TR off his link here.

TR, careful what you wish for, it looks like it’s gonna happen..:)

  29. look at the stands at the game in Atlanta. I mean there is NO ONE there

Bettman is smoking something if he thinks he can keep the 30 franchises, AND add more in Canada by expansion instead of moving some of the financially ailing, poor drawing teams to Canada.

  30. Its early, but I want to wish “the Monster” a successful surgery tomorrow. Hope all goes well and your recovery is speedy and you’re back playing at 100%. God Bless!

  31. I echo what MAKO said…..OK heads, got to be up at 4 a.m. so time to really say TA!
Warren folks, catch you next week.
I’m crying that I’ll miss Saturday’s game and all the news…CCCP, this is for you….OY!

  32. Would someone mind elaborating on what and where is going to be going on the 12th? I rarely ever post, however I do read all of your comments and would love to hang out with some Ranger folks to watch a game.

And as far as the LTIR, Hockey Rodent has a great rundown as to why it would be illogical to put Dubi on it.

  33. blogmama

im going tonight after the phish show so ill let em know (note – i am not going to the phish show, i do not listen to phish, i eat fish).

anyone else “d-nice” isnt my website so dont email that, lol.

  34. Thank goodness that trade with the Nordiques never happened for Lidros. Way too much to give up.

I know he was dominant for a few years but Colorado ended up winning the Cup and Philly didn’t.

  35. Matt Moulson with a hat trick tonight against the Trashers. LA is having a good season, bubi don’t get why they never really gave this kid much of a chance. I thought Tavares was making him better, but he looks pretty damn good on his own.

NYR pays top dollar for scorers, and a garbage team like the Isles gets this kid, along with Streit totally out of luck. Unreal.

  36. 2003-04 Lukko Rauma FNL 20 0 1
    2004-05 Lukko Rauma FNL 48 0 2
    2005-06 Lukko Rauma FNL 55 5 10
    2006-07 Lukko Rauma FNL 55 7 17
    2007-08 HIFK Helsinki FNL 51 11 26
    2008-09 HIFK Helsinki FNL 54 8 26
    2009-10 Hartford Wolf Pack AHL 24 5 11

Heikkinen’s stats from hockeydb for those who are interested; numbers are games played, goals, assists.

  37. Oh man, I hope the draw doesn’t inclue the US and France in the same pool!

Great to see the rangers bring someone up that actually plays with an edge on D, I really hope somehow this ends rozy’s time here (it won’t, but I can hope)!

Worst trade of the 2000s, simon to calgary and graves to san jose!

Worst trade of the 90s, close but gotta go with trading ulfie to the wings!

  38. Nasty, I don’t know if he was the last of the true power forwards. There were Tkachuk and Shanahan and Guerin and Messier and Graves and Lindros and (before his crime) Bertuzzi and now Getzlaf and Lucic and Thornton and, geez, you’d have to say Ovechkin.

But Neely was awesome. And, well, nasty.

  39. Orr, Streit was no crap shoot for the Isles. He was the PP QB for the Habs the season their PP was #1 in the league. It was lethal. Remember the 5 goal blown lead for the Rangers at the Bell Center? Sather decided he wanted Redden instead, and felt that 6.5/per was reasonable compensation for his services. Streit would have made more sense as a Ranger signing because the PP needed a QB badly, he would have been a great fit. Blame Slats for that one

  40. people are now complaining about all the good moves the islanders have made. maybe i am crazy but have the islanders sucked for about half of the lifetime of the average blogger on this site?????

they have not made the playoffs since the lockout and have sucked for about 20 years……..

  41. little trivia…

Anaheim’s Corey Perry had his franchise-record 19-game point streak snapped…

Who owns longest consecutive point-scoring streak in NHL history?

(something i learned watching Ducks vs Stars tonight)

    no cheating! :)

  42. CR9 (Red Sox farm system = Hydra, except cut off one head and 6 more grow back) on

    AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW….Steve cleared waivers.

I was hoping he would no longer be an option. Like maybe, another team would be stupid enough to waste an active roster spot on him.

The only GM stupid enough to employ Valiquette is of course Slats.

Once again, we suffer from Slatsitis. I wished he would have just released Vally as soon as he cleared.

But I guess Vally is too good a guy.

  43. im building a roster for NHL 10 with all top two NHL draft picks starting from 1999 draft…it was a horrible draft year…a$$landers had 3 top 10 picks and rangers had 2 top 10 picks!! Talking aboot a bad year and a bad luck for both franchises! Vancouver took Sedin bros at #2 and #3 pick… and big winner of the draft was Ottawa picking Martin Havlat at #26! Just thought it was sort of interesting to mention…

makes you kind of wonder… what if…?

    4. Pavel Brendl
    9. Jamie Lundmark

    Isles picked

    5. Tim Connolly
    8. Taylor Pyatt
    10.Branislav Mezei

  44. Wicky-The Simon and Graves trades were both good. Simon got the Rangers Betts who we all loved on the PK and as a sometimes shutdown guy, and Greg Moore who probably helped a lot of guys like Dubi, Anisimov, etc. by playing with them in the minors.

Graves got them Samuelson who was a pretty decent player and could have been a good third liner until he blossomed in the post lockout. He had a bad second season on a horrible team and was shipped out for Kovalev part 2.

My friend who roots for the Islanders said that Moulson’s brother and Tavares are buddies and the families are good friends so they brought him in as a familiar face and he’s been a huge bargain.

  45. ZzZz NYR ZzZz "just win ,baby!!!!"... says Greg L. on

goooooooooooooooooooo Rangerss!!!!!!!!!! oh wait…saturday , Right!!!!

  46. greg, games on saturday bro. i dont get why the big gap in games. weve actually done a few minor moves but is johnson that good? is he gonna pump the rangers up? will he make the skulking human dumpling rozy become erect and come to play hard?? is he gonna be creeping up on hank and thrusting his way to stardom?? idk but this johnson looks like a big mean monster. hes tall like an elevator shaft. and hes got a good head on it

  47. hank is gonna be there. dont u all worry. he’ll be there and probably win it all. hes probably saving himself so mr johnsons can to take over. johnson will most likely have to stand on his head and penetrate the ice to get us some wins!! hey, when mr. johnson is playing, even a goalie can score!!!

  48. I was going to mention LeClair, but he didn’t have one quality the other guys had: He couldn’t or wouldn’t fight.

  50. Kevin Stevens, pre-smashing his face against the Isles. Tocchet was a decent power forward in his day too. Old man Gary Roberts and not as prolific a scorer but Shayne Corson was very gritty.

Also let’s not forget the player appointed best leader in the game, Jarome Iginla.
