News and insight about the New York Rangers

Old No. 1, and a new No. 1 winger

November
20

First of all, sorry for the late mention, but Jim Cerny is interviewing Eddie Giacomin at noon on Rangers Radio. You can hear it here.
———————————————-

Steve Zipay reports from practice that Ales Kotalik is the newest autioner for the job of the Mairan Gaborik-Vinny Prospal left winger. Kotalik is naturally a right-winger.

No doubt that Enver Lisin has lost some of his speed due to the fractured foot.

And yesterday it was reported that Chris Drury is starting to feel better. However, having been through LaFontaine, Lindros, Beukeboom, Richter, et al, we all know not to jump to conclusions on concussions, right?

    its a programmable drum machine

i only used it cause the day i decided to switch my name d-nice “just call me d-nice” was on the radio. he is the “tr-808”. hence the name. that and if you search for my “handle” it can only come back w/ the drum machine and not where i live, what i do, delinquent social networking accounts etc…

    adds to the mystery, lol.

Staal- Rodent posts within hours after the game. Always a good read. His glass is usually half emrty though.

Patrick- $61 for floor seats in Philly? Does it come with the protective cup?

  9. Carp

Thanks for the explanation. Now I understand the Peas too.

  10. Staal Wart

    ilb2001,
read a post game thread here…the glass is always half empty.

I don’t know abnout you folks but I’m getting pretty dis-gusted watching replay of last years hockey style over and over again, the casual dump in and timid attempts to chase after it, resulting in scurrying back to the hole in the wall ( notably the Ranger’s defenseive zone.) It’s such a waste of time.

  12. morg

Zipay reports Brash on 3rd Lisin on 4th,Avery centering 2nd PP unit.

    i wish i could
but i refuse to go to that site

  23. Jlone

never heard of coupling.. what channel and day/time is it on?

  24. CTRANGER

Agree with most of what Rodent said. Have to get some points now before December’s brutal schedule kicks in. At best, we will be fighting for the 8th spot again in April.
No help in Hartford for the center position and hamstrung by the cap.

  25. morg

Drury worked out off ice sez Zip,yay soon we will have 8 3rd line players in the lineup again

sorry, we are supposed to be explaining our call signs.
Mine is a nickname that started in the military and has followed me since “wicky” and then when I started racing motocross again, I used the #229 out of memory for my father who is buried in a military cemetary, headstone #229.

    So there you have it!

  29. wicky229

it easily ranks up there with seinfeld (and I LOVE seinfeld)! it makes friends look like an infomercial!!

  30. CTBlueshirt

I suppose the fortunate thing is that despite their poor play over the last dozen games in any other division the Rangers would be at least tied for 2nd place on points (winning pct is a different matter).

We all knew, but didn’t want to fully admit to ourselves, that they weren’t as good as when they first started and you just have to have some faith that they’re not quite as bad as they’ve been playing the last month.

Even among the more optimistic people here, very few predicted anything better than a 4th or 5th seed finish and they’re still very much in the mix for something like that.

Let’s put it this way, if their current record came as a result of not a prolonged winning streak nor a prolong losing streak, basically alternating wins and losses the entire season would there be as negative sentiment about the team now?

  31. morg

CTBlue, you didnt think we would be 18th and about to be 19th behind the isles, league wide, did you?me either.this team is a clutterbuck, and we are about to head into a tough stretch.

  32. CTBlueshirt

I think last year’s team was less talented but was also more experienced and they made the playoffs. I also remember the Rangers in 07/08 struggling out of the gate and again at mid-season and still making the playoffs.

I look at a team like Philly, that half the “experts” predicted to win the East and they started off with matching winning and losing streaks and look like they’ve found some traction.

Or a team like the Devils that I don’t believe has more talent, but play a better style and team game, rip off a pretty impressive streak.

Every year in the post-lockout era, the Rangers have gone through significant personnel changes, whether through addition (Shanny, Drury, Gomez, Redden, Gaborik) or subtraction (Jagr, Shanny, Gomez) especially amongst it’s top players. There’s something to be said for team cohesion and the annual shake ups and it somewhat explains why the team looks completely out of synch lately.

  33. Jlone/Bubblehead

    Thanks Wicky.
I will just start with the first season then.
    ..off to sit in traffic.

  34. Joe in DE

My name is Joe, and though I’m from NJ, I’m living in DE… hence Joe in DE. Clever, I know.

Two LOL moments from last night’s games. 1) the Leafs giving up the tying goal with 3 secs left after getting the go ahead goal 27 secs prior, only to lose in a SO. Wow that sucks. 2) The fans in Anaheim brawling over Niedermayer’s stick after he threw it into the crowd. Awesome.

Glad to see Kotalik on the top line. Vinnie and Gabby are a scoring threat from in close, so bringing Kotalik onto that line may create a new avenue to score some goals with that howitzer he has. He can dial that up from long range or even in the slot (a la Shanahan). May work out.

Avery is never one to shy away from shooting, so his linemates need to be aware and go looking for the rebounds.

Rozsival should be fined by Torts every time he passes up a shot on the point

  35. morg

heres what Joe was talking about,Niedermayer looks baffled.

  36. 3 steps to save our season:

    1) Shut Chris Drury down for the season.
In more ways than one, for team and player, it’s for the best.

    2) Put Michal Rozsival on waivers, give him permission to sign in the KHL (Avangard Omsk with Jagr maybe).

    3) Trade Dubinsky (when he gets back), Staal, Sanguinetti, Grachev, and our first rounder in ‘10 to Tampa for Vincent Lecavalier and Paul Ranger. Yes, Tampa will make that deal.
Tortorella will get his top man back, and we’ll finally have our #1 center (don’t expect him to be the 2004 version of himself but he’s better than anyone we have now).It can be done cap-wise.

  37. NYRanger4Life

Drury back on the rink skating today according to Zip

  38. NYRanger4Life

Edit: back in the BUILDING…. my bad!

  39. 4Generations and only 4Cups

3 steps to save our season seems like 20 steps backwards in a real hockey situation. So you’re saying, trade the farm (including a guy, amongst others, we could have packaged for Dany Heatley) Staal, a high prospect of ours, Sangs who you probably dont know jack sh*t about seeing as how you’re making this trade proposal and Grachev is basically our hope for the future.

Why not trade Anisimov, Grachev, DZ and a 1st for Vinny? Sound good? Paul Ranger, too! Left the team for personal reasons. I sure want that luggage.

This is why the Rangers never win, because their fans are idiots. I’m a Rangers fan, and ive heard so many more times than not to just ‘trade the guy for somebody better.’

I’ve had my fair share of conversations with devils and islander fans and they’re both complacent with where they stand, usually. The Ranger fans for some reason just want it all right now. They want to have their cake and eat it. Too fxxckin bad.

How many times are Rangers prospects thrown directly under the bus by Rangers fans, compared to Devils fans and Islander fans? I never heard a single word about Tavares’ production this season, or the breakout year Moulson has had, because it’s still early and they HAVENT WON A THING!

Staal is TWENTY! TWO! This very young man is playing a ton of minutes for a young defenseman and is getting way too much pressure on him by stupid fans telling him that he wont fit into a system 20 games after playing it. Mike Green was never a goal scorer, do you beg to differ now? Marc Staal has big shoes to grow into, and for everyone who ever takes a shot at Marc Staal i’d like you to take a look at the stats of guys like Chara and Pronger and Niedermayer and see how they did their first years. Trust me! It wasn’t Norris material.

We were blessed with one of the most gifted defenseman of all time in Brian Leetch, and we’re all expecting somebody to become ‘the new brian leetch’ but it’ll never happen. Everybody wants a ‘new Mess’ well it aint gonna happen. Stick it in your pipe and smoke it Rangers fans because your herb isnt changing for quite some time.

Slats isnt on his way out, and things wont change if we lose this year, like we likely will.

Id like to have one person tell me that Rangers fans dont throw their guys under the bus and give me a good reason, then i’ll stop my rant.

  40. CR9

Because of Drury’s lack of production in his time in NY, does anyone else despise him for that goal against Buff?

Would anyone love him for eternity if he got us one more goal all season, the SC winning goal this year?

  41. 4Generations and only 4Cups

P.S. Rozsival will never shoot from the point because he’s not fit for that job. Maybe if he were told to be a crease-clearer then he could part take in that sort of job, and have DZ go in for the rush and hang back.

He wasnt a PPQB last year, the year before, the year before, or the year before. Get over the fact he doesn’t shoot because thats not the player he is. Play to his strengths, not constantly his weaknesses like we have been. He’s a very solid puck mover if it isn’t constantly relied that he had to jump up into the play and risk back checking because our WORLD CLASS goaltender can seemingly save everything. People have said that our defense is lacking, but it just isnt. We’re playing the go-go-go and we have a goalie who is a sieve when he’s put one on one now. He is not somebody we can rely on to stop a puck if there is somebody coming down for the break. Stop this go-go-go tempo and start being aggressive with some good backchecking and some good forechecking. Playing 3-2 in the zone and playing on full defensive pressure is the reason we give up tons of stupid goals and make our defense look stupid. It isnt the guys who cant put rockets on their skates to catch up to a guy going forward at full speed its the guy in the net who cant find the fxxking puck for his life, even if its Matt Bradley.

    okay, ow im done.

  42. 4Generations and only 4Cups

CR9 you dont get to the cup without clutch scoring and timely goals from your Captain. Sorry if the acid you got was bad.

  43. Salty

However, having been through LaFontaine, Lindros, Beukeboom, Richter, et al, we all know not to jump to conclusions on concussions, right?
    ......

I only hope they all come to the same conclusion.

Drury was already DONE as an “offensive threat” in the NHL, I can’t even imagine how sucktacular he will be after this injury. I’ve never, ever a Ranger as much as this guy.

I never say stuff like this, but I sincerely wish his career would end and we’d get a free $7M in cap space to work with.

  44. Salty

I’ve never, ever a hated Ranger as much as this guy.*

  45. morg

This is why the Rangers never win, because their fans are idiots. I’m a Rangers fan, and ive heard so many more times than not to just ‘trade the guy for somebody better.’

that makes no sense, fans dont win games for teams do they?
i enjoyed your rant tho,Rant on!

  46. 4Generations and only 4Cups

THANK you salty. Somebody who can be MEAN about things once. I couldnt have been more ecstatic when drury got hurt. Captain Heartless. Truly the most overpaid player in hockey. Wade Redden can make many, many solid, unnoticed defensive plays, yet, our captain will never score a clutch goal again in his life.

  47. 4Generations and only 4Cups

Uhh, morg, if you’re a business, you cater to your customers, no? Sather has been buying and trading players every single summer because if he didnt there would be an uproar in new york as to why we ‘gave up’

  48. Salty

Because of Drury’s lack of production in his time in NY, does anyone else despise him for that goal against Buff?

Would anyone love him for eternity if he got us one more goal all season, the SC winning goal this year?

    ...........

Honestly? I would just loathe him even more. It would be perpetuating that same BS “Drury Story”... he’d get all the glory and credit, nenewed NY contracts (can’t let your captain/hero walk away, can you???)

  49. 4Generations and only 4Cups

This team rebuilt one time that i feasibly remembered, and that was trading Leetch and Kovalev WAY! after their primes. Leetch could have won a cup, or trophies on cup contenders but because of the selfishness of Ranger fans (and also his own winning desire for NY) he stayed. I’d have love to have sent him to a young and aspiring team for a 1-5 pick in the 00’s to ‘04.

  50. trade all the kids

what a joke. why not throw in Del Zotto, AA and Gilroy too. in fact, why not just have jerseys at the NHL draft that say “trade bait” on the front so that the kids know their status from day one. and make it clear that the ranger organ-i-zation operates like a fantasy league, scamwow 3 card monty fly-by-night disgraceful carnival barker operation

  51. Salty

This is why the Rangers never win, because their fans are idiots.

    .....

    flawless logic

  52. morg

BS 4Gen,did Sather and Dolan ask the fans,or even think about the fans when they signed Brashear?for instance?

  53. Salty

“This is why the Rangers never win, because their fans are idiots.”

    ........

Honestly, if this is going to be your big theory of the day, wouldn’t you think the fans hurt the team more by requiring BIG NAMES over QUALITY UP AND COMING PLAYERS that may not be as well known yet?

  54. Salty

did Sather and Dolan ask the fans,or even think about the fans when they signed Brashear?

    .......

They went after the big name enforcer. End of story.

  55. 4Generations and only 4Cups

Im pretty sure businesses revolve around the aspect of a business, to satisfy the customer. Im pretty sure it is flawless logic seeing as how Glen Sather will do anything at the will of ‘the people’ and not what’s right for the team. How many Devils fans were happy to see Rafalski, Niedermayer and Gomez walk away? A LOT! How many times did they miss the playoffs? NONE!

I love to talk to Ranger fans, because it’s ever-so hopeless. Then when I talk to islander and devil fans they all say how the Rangers were headed in the right direction in building their own rosters, then we just kind of said fxxk it and went back to trading and signing.

  56. The Messiah

    4GEN,

You have no clue what your talking about. If anyone is an idiot, its you.

You really think Dolan or Sather really give 2 SH*TS what we think about trades or who we want on this team?

    Honestly?

  57. 4Generations and only 4Cups

“Honestly, if this is going to be your big theory of the day, wouldn’t you think the fans hurt the team more by requiring BIG NAMES over QUALITY UP AND COMING PLAYERS that may not be as well known yet?”

Yes I do, because you see how many goals Brashear has gotten, how much we all love him and how great he is on his skates compared to a guy we plucked out of Boston for league minimum and started playing him and made him what he is. The same way we jettisoned Avery out of here because he wanted 500,000 dollars more for playing the way he does, in NY.

  58. ORR !! What Is It Good For ?!?!

Lol, Brash*t on the 3rd line.

    That wont happen.

    Funny stuff though.

  59. morg

Im not a season ticket holder, but do you (ST holders)get a questionnaire before you order tickets that asks what coarse youd like the organization to follow?
The blame is on Dolan and Sather, point blank.

  60. 4Generations and only 4Cups

I think that Dolan and Sather are on the same path with you morons, that they want the biggest names on their team, just like Salty said, and they just want it in broadway lights.

  61. Staal Wart

the big name enforcer who hasn’t enforced crap!

  62. 4Generations and only 4Cups

Im not sure why mocking the point of following what your customer wants is such an idiotic ideal, but go on and bastardize it, I honestly could care less. Apparently the blame is on the Owner and the Pres/GM, who do everything to fill the building every night, LIKE SIGN THE BIGGEST NAME PLAYERS.

They had their eyes on Gaborik because he was an all in one package just like Jagr. A superstar with a lot of skill. I’m not saying a guy like Hossa isnt a superstar, because he is, but im going to say guys like Gaborik and Kovalchuk and Jagr have much more talent than he does. It’s all about putting a face on your season ticket package to make you smile about the losing season ahead.

    Of course, I’m DEAD wrong.

  63. The Messiah

If i didnt know any better, i would say that 4Gen = Local.

    Morons?????????? HAHAAHAHAHAHA

You have no idea about anything, but as long as it makes you feel better, keep going.

    Talk about idiots….

  64. morg

Just sayin,Prospal will fetch a pretty penny come Deadline.just sayin..

  65. 4Generations and only 4Cups

I mean, if you had something intelligible to reply, something to say in rebuttal i’d agree with you about everything you say about me. You haven’t said a single word that is anything but arbitrary stalling, ‘O…WE’RE IDIOTS???? NO U!’ That’s some great stuff. Love to be a fan of the same team as you, chief.

  66. 4Generations and only 4Cups

morg, i’d absolutely trade prospal at the deadline if he didnt have completely magic chemistry with Gaborik, although it doesnt seem to matter who centers him, they definitely click instantly.

  67. The Messiah

Thankfully, it doesnt look like you are.

  68. 4Generations and only 4Cups

My Great grandfather was a Ranger fan, My grandfather was a Ranger fan, My father was a Ranger fan, and I am a Ranger fan that’s sick of idiot Ranger fans. I completely understand why fans of the Islanders have a passionate hate for us, because there’s two kinds of Ranger fans.

    1. Complete and total belief/Trade/Sign everyone- Cup every year.

These are your friendly guys telling you that you have to just believe in the team, believe in the management and believe in the guys that Slats put in, because that’s whats best for the team. Because, really, it is, but honestly, where does that get us? Trading away our picks for guys like Brian Boyle (oh my god, what a stud!) and Alex Bourret (#1 Winger) has turned out to be straight up diasasterous. We’ve traded away guys like Pascal Dupuis, Petr Sykora and Fedor Tyutin for guys like Alex Bourret, (we didnt re-sign sykora), and Nikolai Zherdev. Great.

    2. The realistic fan. Why is Sather REALLY in control still? When can the bleeding stop? When can we rebuild?

These are the fans that wanted to sit back and sign nobody 2 years ago when we signed winners like Naslund and Kalinin, boy, they were sure great Rangers. Guys like ORR what is he good for, i see him posting and just being realistic all the time with where this team is headed. Its unrealistic to have high expectations of a team with 4 very young defenseman and 2 somewhat washed up veterans. Redden has been good this year, but for 6.5, thats dumb

I’m sorry if people feel like there’s a Rangers united, because there isnt. The Rangers can be like a normal club and play the guys they drafted rather than sending them away for basically anyone. We gave Korpikoski one single year. Is that fair, at all?

    Oh well. Hopeless.

  69. morg

Hypotheticaly,if the Rangers are out of it come Deadline, what players do we have that teams will want, that we would be willing to part with?
I mention Prospal cause i see him as our most valuable, but tradeable asset(due to his contract that makes him an UFA)

  70. CCCP

    Carp

  72. post of the month

    2:02

    great great post

  73. CTBlueshirt

Two things have doomed this franchise since 1994, the lack of an architect and a lack of a person that is good with figuring out what parts are of good quality and what parts are bad.

Trading away youth has not been as big a problem under Sather as it was under Neil Smith. Very few of the youngsters that Sather has traded have gone on to become legitimate NHL stars, particularly in the post-lockout era. Smith on the other hand freely traded away the likes of Weight, Amonte, Marc Savard, and Mattias Norstrom.

Sather’s weaknesses have primarily been signing players to inflated contracts and a poor record of drafting cornerstone players.

There is also no single organizational “vision”. Or if there is one, it’s never properly executed and seen to completion.

Right now the team is a mix of building through in house development and signing players to fill in the rest. I don’t have a problem per se with a team like the Rangers using their largess to attract talent even if that ability is somewhat muted by the salary cap. The issue is when you pay 1st line money to a 2nd line player, 2nd pair money to a 3rd pair D and so on. Drury/Gomez/Redden are prime examples of this, but Gaborik is an example of when the valuations actually make sense.

There is also a disconnect between the development of players in the AHL and then when they arrive in the NHL. You ever wonder why the Red Wings and Devils churn out new players year after year that seem to easily fit into the big league club? It’s because the style they play in the AHL is very similar to what they play in the NHL. The 3 best looking homegrown Rangers players since the lockout have been Lundqvist, Staal (this year non-withstanding) and Del Zotto. And guess what? They all skipped the AHL and went straight to the big leagues.

I think once they begin to get a better focus of how they want their team to look, from top to bottom through the organization, the franchise will be able to make more significant strides.

  74. CCCP

i have 3 more steps to save our season:

    1) kill the guy under the name “3 steps to save our season”

    2) chip-in and buy the Rangers

    3) Fire Sather

  75. Laurel Babcock

Good afternoon Staal and all! I swore I wouldn’t visit today (in fact, just told Carp I wouldn’t) but I’m a known liar in that regard so….

    4 Gen,

Some of the things you say are legit.

But you destroy your credibility and sound like a jackass saying things like (I paraphrase), “The Rangers suck because of their fans.”

Sather is the problem. Dolan is the bigger problem. They don’t give a rat’s ass about the fans, or the players for that matter.

They care about the $s. If they never won a Cup again and sold out every night, they’d be pumped. The fans would be miserable.

But I forgot, the Rangers suck because their fans are idiots.

    Right.

  98. Staal Wart

I totally agree with 4 Generations…especially throwing young players under the bus. I laugh at you posters who say stuff like…Staal is overrated…we should have traded him.
The idiocy in that thinking is profound! Its laughable!

  99. tares

I think Drury should be very careful and return after the olympics.

We all know this is not a championship team, it is at best a second round playoff team.

Until we get a legit 1st line center and a tough gritty dman don’t hold your breath in the meantime enjoy the effort and the great game of Hockey

I ranted a lot today. Im not so sure why, but I think it has something to do with the fact I have only one test left until vacation and ive been going stir crazy….

I love the Rangers. I want to see them WIN. I may have been misguided when I said the fans are the problem, possibly should have sectioned out the idiots.

I’m passionate, and people on this blog are passionate, thats why when I feel something I feel like its no better place than where there’s a ton of caring Rangers loyalties.

We need a lot of things, a lot of them have even become jokes around here like ‘Have a hard hitting, crease-clearing d-man day!’ because we need it so bad. Orpik turned us down for 6.5 mill to stay in Pitt for 6 and got his Stanley Cup Ring. Shows you who knows better.

  170. 4Generations and only 4Cups

Staal Wart I just cant stand people trying to legit trade Marc Staal. Im pretty sure I made my case by stating Pronger and Chara didn’t start out as Pronger and Chara. Nor did Mike Green.

  171. Staal Wart

4Gens…I did the same thing a few days ago comparing Staal to Orpik and Bouwmeester
It just shows a staggering lack of hockey knowledge or impatience. I tend to think its the former.

  172. Staal Wart

The funny thing is I bet at some point in this season or next, DZ and Gilroy will regress a little and some will be calling for trading them…then when they come storming back and become great players, these same people claim to be huge supporters. pathetic really.

  173. 4Generations and only 4Cups

It’s disappointing when you find a place for yourself in a website like this, but get turned away because of a lot of people telling you the wrong thing. I’ve been reading these comment sections long before Sam Weinman left, so i’ve been a regular on-looker of what goes on here. I just feel like every (stupid) Blue Shirt loyalist is someone who wants Slats to go for the biggest name during the deadline and get the #1 FA come July 1st. I had one name on my wishlist all year, it was Marian Gaborik. I just thank Sather for at least doing that. At least bringing in a guy that no matter what puts up points. He commanded the team in Minnesota, this man is driven and we got super lucky to have him. I haven’t heard much about him being injury prone, because I was reading it ALL over this blog when he missed 2 games. Nobody gets a break. It’s absurd.

I love my Rangers, I just wish that Ranger fans would understand its a process- to win. This isnt Brian Burke and ‘I don’t rebuild’ because that’s straight dumb and childish. Look where the Leafs sit now, DEAD LAST IN THE LEAGUE! A guy like Peter Chiaralli knows EXACTLY the plan he had in mind when he went to Bean Town and thats why I really have become a bruins fan. Its so nice to see somebody who thinks about logic, and reasonable thinking when going about picking players and hiring staff members. Savard was a perfect pivot on a Lucic and Kessel line. Chara is their Captain, and not just some douchey step in like our captain is, he’s their CAPTAIN.

It’d be nice to pick and choose the right people, like, just Kotalik, Gabby and Prospal this year, and not spend our picks and money on Arnason (lol), Voros, Brash*t and the likes. It’s how your GM uses discretion to see how good he truly is.

  174. LW3H

    Breaking news…

Brian Burke discreetly announces to TSN, Sportsnet, CBC, the Globe and Mail and Toronto Sun his intention to offer Vesa Toskala, Alexei Ponikarovsky and first round picks in 2012, 2013 and 2014 for the “truculent” monthly metrocard.

Glen Sather immediately signs monthly metrocard to nine-year, $84m contract extension. Sather was unavailable for comment.

  175. 4Generations and only 4Cups

I’m not sure if you remember all the offers for Heatley that included Del Zotto, do you? Because i do, and when i saw that i simply said no. Even Dubinsky, who at the time, was in my good graces because he deserved a clean shot. The kid lacks consistency hardcore, and we busted on keeping him cause we could have a monster team if we moved Dubi, but keeping the faith, I’d love to see him turn into that goal scorer that I see him being. He has such a wonderful accurate shot, i wish it’d be used more.

  176. Staal Wart

    Agreed 4Gens…
I did bust on Gaborik’s injury-proneness we are only 20 games in soo….
    Brashear…here is what I remember…
    http://www.hockeyfights.com/fight-of-the-week/video/donald-brashear-vs-wade-belak-mar-10-2009/

  177. 4Generations and only 4Cups

Gaborik is injury prone, but the fact is, as far as what we could have gotten, how many players would shine under the lights like he has? He has almost 30 points already, and this is the Rangers we’re talking about. Remember, the team who’s leading scorer didnt manage 60 points? He’s amazing, and makes more of an impact than anyone we’ve signed since Jagr, or Prospal. I made my o-face when i found out slats really signed a good-deal guy with a good heart. Love prospal.

  178. CCCP

Martin Straka was great as a Ranger too. One of my favorite Rangers… Classy hardworking hockey player.

  179. bull dog line

    4Generations, and Staal Wart,
I have been a Ranger fan since 1972, and I think I am a pretty knowledgeable fan, and I think the Rangers should absolutely trade Staal for the right price. The guys you compare Staal to have always had an edge to there game, Staal has none. Those players have always had an offensive upside, Staal has none. Staal is a finesse defenceman, a soft one at that. Watching him peel away after someone throws snow on Hank, or runs Hank makes me sick to look at him. So yeah I would trade him, hopefully before the rest of the league figures out how overrated he is.

  180. 4Generations and only 4Cups

Bouwmeester has always had an edge to his game? I basically see Staal as the next JBo, because JBo has never had ridiculously hard hits, has never fought a ton and has never really took the body hard until quite recently. I’m not sure when the last time you saw a defenseman come up through the organization that was a youngster since Dave Maloney, but given time, this kid will be good. Pretty sad how much you throw this kid under the bus considering he plays top tier minutes and yet doesnt look that stupid. He’s 22.

  181. MAKO

    Good evening all!!

    RE: Heatley
After Gaborik was signed how do you think they were going to afford HEATLEY? They didnt move Drury, Redden and Rozi wasnt enough money to make space.

Prospal is going to go for $3-$4mm in the offseason. I will be damn surprised if he doesnt.

  182. Hockeymon

4gen I agree Staal is going to get better. He’s having a hard time right now, but the kid has talent. He is no where near fully developed physically or mentally.

  183. bull dog line

    4gen,
What you do not seem to realize about Staal is that he is coming up on contract time. Do you want to pay him on what you hope he going to be. This is his 3rd full season, a time when the good ones start emerging, Staal has regressed since the middle of last season.
I know we are supposed to look at all the Rangers with rose colored, especially home grown Rangers, but I prefer to call a spade a spade. Staal is a soft player with no offensive skills, and no mean streak.

  184. bull dog line

Staal is 22 now, and in 10 years he has a chance to 32.

  185. wicky229(and no, I don't wear a visor!)

Jbo has been physical recently because he is now in calgary! You go to calgary you develop an edge quickly, same with philly, same with vancouver. I have no doubt if staal played in one of those 3 places, he would play with more edge to his game! Problem is the rangers never seem to go for the guys that naturally seem to have that edge. Quite honestly when they do get them, they always seem to trade them for a softer “scoring” type player or waive or demote them to make room for that type player. Quite honestly the players with the most “edge” to their game since the lock out or just before it are simon, purinton, reitz, and neiminen that I can remember!

  186. wicky229(and no, I don't wear a visor!)

    TR

So I guess i’m not going to w77, oh wait I’m the only “frog” that has never worn a visor, so …I should be ok??

  187. wicky229(and no, I don't wear a visor!)

I wouldn’t trade staal personally, but I would trade dubi and girardi at some point. Not that I want to get rid of all our good young players or whatever, but because you have to give up something to get something. We really do need a couple of physical d men and a first line pivot for sure. I do not think another team is going to part with those type player for a rozy or a drury. Just saying!

  188. bull dog line

Trading Girardi is a no brainer. He has maxed out potential wise. He is now, what he is always going to be. Dubi, I am not so sure about. He brings value to the team wether or not he is scoring. He hits, drops the gloves stands up for his teammates. That kind of player is hard to replace. He may be nothing more that a 3rd line center, bou he will be a valuable one. Staal right now brings the most value in a trade, he may command a worthy package in return.

  189. wicky229(and no, I don't wear a visor!)

    bull dog

I agree with you on dubi….until this year. since the hold out and fatter contract, I have not seen him stand up, fight, or hit nearly as much as he used to!

  195. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " It's almost time to put out the Cats !!!"... says Greg L.

  196. wicky229(and no, I don't wear a visor!)

    mako

    I agree 100%

  197. Ilb2001

And another thing about that Detroit-Florida game. I don’t know who are those guys on the air for Detroit, but they sound like they are reading archived obituaries.
Sometimes we don’t know how good we have it with Sam and Joe. I mean, my anatomy professor sounded more exciting.

  198. Olga Folkyerself

Geez Greg, Buy a map, will ya?

Everyone in Minnesota loves Iowa- it keeps them from touching Missouri.

  199. Ilb2001

Florida won in OT. McCabe with the winner.

  200. Olga Folkyerself

    Boston beat Buffalo in OT.

  201. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " It's almost time to put out the Cats !!!"... says Greg L.

    Olga;
Missiouri ,missasippi, tomato ,tomooto ? I’ll buy a Map if you read it to me. Heck I see like 20 Sprinfields , ya think I can find Iowahiomaha? Amerikan is kinda screwy like the crap around here!!

  202. MAKO

blah FL won in OT… and the Islander look like they have a stranglehold on their 2 – 1 lead. OY VEI THEY HAVE TO WIN TOMORROW!!!

  203. Hockeymon

I watched Flordia play they other night, and I can tell you tomorrow will be no cake walk for the Rangers. I just hope it’s a good game. I can stand a loss if they play well.

  204. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " It's almost time to put out the Cats !!!"... says Greg L.

Who cares aboot geogragphy , Rangers are based outta New York , thats all that matters. It’s that place where that woman is standing outside in the harbor waving a torch.

  205. Olga Folkyerself

geogragphy? Spelling doesn’t seem to be your strong point either.

  206. Staal Wart

    Hey Greg L.
I used to live in IA.
    Davenport baby!

  207. Staal Wart

Oh and I still think trading Staal would be a colossal mistake.

  208. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " It's almost time to put out the Cats !!!"... says Greg L.

Hockeymon , Yeah florida wont be easy BUT isn’t our team due for another shut out? Or maybe a hat trick night for the great Gaborik? Gaborik is getting well over 50 goals this year …time to pot in a few hatties!!

We are blessed with Gaborik. The Rangers were never supose to get him at all , we never had a sniff of the 2000 draft , ok we got Fillip Novak ? Gaborik was drafted 3rd with heatley 2nd pick. We are blessed to have suckh a good high pick!!!!

  209. Olga Folkyerself

Staalwart- Who’s trading Staal, and for what?

  210. CCCP

Islanders are two games over 500 for the first time since March 2008!

so kids…we dont have it that bad after all.

  211. Olga Folkyerself

Being a few percentage points ahead of the Isles is not the great success that I had hoped for…

    Fire Sather!

  212. Glen Sather

    Fire Olga Folkyerself!

  213. Chuck Woolery

ZzZz NYR ZzZz ” It’s almost time to put out the Cats !!!”... says Greg L. November 20th, 2009 at 10:02 pm

Who cares aboot geogragphy , Rangers are based outta New York , thats all that matters. It’s that place where that woman is standing outside in the harbor waving a torch.

    This post made me smile

  214. Olga Folkyerself

Hey Glen- There are enough people to hate in the world already without your working so hard to give us another?

This is an excellent time for you to become a missing person.

  215. Olga Folkyerself

Chuck- It made me wince about NY’s educational system…

  216. MAKO

    oooh good they lost

  217. Rodney Rangerfield

A girl phoned me and said, “Come on over. There’s nobody home.” I went over. Nobody was home!

  218. Chuck Woolery

    Olga,

    Greg’s from Canada.

  219. Chuck Woolery

I’ll tell ya, my wife and I, we don’t think alike. She donates money to the homeless, and I donate money to the topless!

  220. Chuck Woolery

I asked my old man if I could go ice-skating on the lake. He told me, “Wait til it gets warmer.”

  221. Olga Folkyerself

    Greg’s from Canada.

Wow! A Frostback. I should have guessed when I saw “aboot”. That explains the geography… My bad about NY’s educational system. I feel much better.

  222. *Rodney Rangerfield*

I tell you, with my doctor, I don’t get no respect. I told him, “I’ve swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills.” He told me to have a few drinks and get some rest.

  223. Chuck Woolery

    Olga,

No offense, but you seem like an asshole.

    FIRE SATHER

  224. Olga Folkyerself

    Chuck-
I’d like to see things from your point of view but no one can get their head that far up their ass.

  225. CCCP

“Don’t sweat the petty things and don’t pet the sweaty things.”

  226. Izzy Mandlebaum

Sounds like Chuck and Olga need a time out…

  227. Chuck Woolery

    Olga,

That really doesn’t make any sense.

  228. Izzy Mandlebaum

    I understood it… :)

  229. Chuck Woolery

    Izzy,

I understood his point, but the statement contradicts itself.

  230. wicky229(and no, I don't wear a visor!)

missouri or mississippi, tuque or touque, frostback or…...hey, olga if you weren’t a girl…..

  231. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " It's almost time to put out the Cats !!!"... says Greg L.

I actually did the “aboot” on purpose , I never say it that way.

Staal wart , Davenport IA sounds like a great place to date a sheep.
