NEW YORK RANGERS POST-GAME NOTES AND QUOTES
October 12, 2009 – New York Rangers 7, Toronto Maple Leafs 2 (Game #6, Home #3)

Here are the official Game Summary and event summary.

The Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs, 7-2, in front of a sold-out crowd (18,200) at Madison Square Garden to extend their winning streak to five games.
The last time the Rangers scored seven goals in a game was April 1, 2007 vs. Toronto; New York have now out-scored their opponents, 12-3, in the third period this season.
New York have sold out 159 consecutive regular season games, dating back to November 5, 2005 against New Jersey; the last regular season non-sellout was October 31, 2005 vs. Montreal (17,697); including the playoffs, the Rangers sellout streak is now at 173 games.
The Blueshirts improved to 5-1-0 overall, including a 3-0-0 mark at home; the Rangers are in the midst of a seven-game home winning streak dating back to last season, and are 11-1-0 in their last 12 regular season games at MSG.
New York tallied two goals in six power play opportunities, and have now registered seven power play goals in their last four games (7-20, 35.0%).
The Rangers had eight players record two-or-more points in the contest, led by defenseman Wade Redden’s three-point (one goal and two assists) effort.
Dan Girardi registered his first career multi-goal performance with two goals, including the game-winner, and has now recorded three goals in two days.
Marian Gaborik tallied two, third period points (one goal and one assist) and registered a game-high, plus-three rating; he has now recorded at least one point in each of the Rangers six games (five goals and nine points) this season.
Sean Avery notched two goals, including one on the power play, and has registered three points (two goals and one assist) in the last two days.
Artem Anisimov recorded his first career multi-point game with two assists; Vinny Prospal extended his scoring streak to five games (one goal and seven points) with two assists.
The Rangers practice schedule for tomorrow, October 13, is 12:00 p.m. at the MSG Training Center.
The Rangers return to action on Wednesday, October 14, when they will face-off against the Los Angeles Kings at Madison Square Garden (7:00 p.m.), in their third game in four nights at MSG; the game will be televised live on MSG Network and can be heard on 1050 ESPN Radio.

POST-GAME QUOTES
John Tortorella on the third period…

“We have had some good third periods and we had another one tonight and I think the conditioning had something to do with it. That is an important part, finishing the game. We felt we were fortunate, Hank made some good saves there in the second. We just wanted to get back on the attack and try to play in their end zone. I don’t know if it is conditioning related but we had another good third period so that is good news.”

Chris Drury on the team’s early start…
“Like I said before game 1, you are not going through a camp like that and not coming out together as a group…as physically demanding as it was. It forces you to come together. You can’t do it alone.”

Henrik Lundqvist on the defense…

“Our defensive game actually improved. It is tougher for teams to create scoring chances, I think, when we stay aggressive, when we play the way we want to play. We can see that already last year when Torts (Coach John Tortorella) came in and we changed our style of play. It is tougher for teams to create chances. When we play the way we play, we are great offensively and defensively. It has been good. They have done a great job the last couple of games.”

Henrik Lundqvist on the offense…

“It is a good feeling to know you have guys that can score when the game is really tight. This year we have a lot of guys who can step up and score. We had a couple of goals tonight that were mentally really important. Not only the first line, (we have) three or four lines that can score – it is huge for us.”

Dan Girardi on the team…
“I think we feel pretty good. At the same time we have to respect our opponents (and) make sure we play hard. We have to keep working hard every day in practice. Good things will come with hard work.”

    not any more.

  3. UESBlueshirt

Coming home from the game, how can you not love this team?

No more “we gave the m something to think about” games vs scrub squads.

BTW MSG was holding a nice sale on merchandise over $75, 25% for AmEx holders no restrictions on the type. I am getting an authentic Gaborik jersey for a lot less than normal retail.

  4. Chuck Woolery

    Well played Mr. Carpiniello.

  5. Dennis

Huge game by Girardi who might be playing his best hockey since he came up.

Check out REDWHITEANDBLUESHIRTS.COM for more analysis.

  6. Rick Carpiniello

Yes, but now you’re last again. Ooops. No you’re not.

  7. Jay T

What a game…Was at the Garden and let me tell you, it was bumping tonight. We looked really good tonight. I do not know if anyone had a bad game. Lets keep it up with a tough one on Wed vs Kings

  8. Pavel

I like that they never stopped attacking. Look at Calgary. The pulled a Renney Rangers and gave up a 5-0 lead and lost 6-5 in OT to Chicago.

  9. MAKO

Yeah the Kings are no joke this year – they have some solid players. I watched the game this afternoon but they played against the Islanders… that’s not saying much though.

    Rick,
From a professional POV other than the obvious pressure what do you see that is different this year that wasnt there last year?
Anyone else wanna chime in ?

  10. Liza from LA

Token Kings fan here. As much as I love Avery, and in turn root for and follow the Rangers, Wednesday’s one of the times when my team comes first. I’ll be at MSG in my Kings jersey so I’ll be expecting the verbal jars that come along with wearing an away jersey, but I’m hoping for something more creative than when a fan told me to go back to Sacramento during my last MSG (Kings-Rangers) experience.

Both teams are atop their respective conferences (not that this means much 5 games in but trust me, Kings fans will take whatever glory and success we can get) and on lengthy winning streaks. It’ll be a fantastic game.

    Avery scores, Kings win.

  11. Sally

Liza, Brown scores, Rangers win :)

    Goodnight, Carp!

  12. st0w

Liza, Kings are one point behind Calgary.. So not quite completely atop :D Maybe you should go back to Sacramento and look closer at those stats! ;)

Gonna be a good game, that’s for sure!

  13. 4Generations and only 4Cups

I really dont need to be creative when it comes to telling somebody off, I think “f*** you, a**hole!” works most of the time. Arguing doesn’t necessitate intelligence

  14. ddebened

Liza, what kind of beer do you like to wear? ;)

  15. Jerry

Definitely a good game up and down the lineup tonight. I’d think of some areas for improvement but can’t really find any. The three runs at Hank are unforgivable and should’ve been repaid in kind at the other end. That said, however, the guys who ran him aren’t known as the running types, so maybe it was a weird coincidence.

  16. Liza from LA

    Hahaha you guys are great!

st0w – That’s what I get for relying on Yahoo! It’s always behind on the updates. I’ll take second though, much better than 15th.

  17. ddebened

Was Lunqvist asked about being run? I didn’t hear the question and only heard part of his answer. It seems like he deflected the question(another save?) and said something like “we’ll address it”. Did Torts comment or was he asked about it?

  18. MAKO

    ddebened

Yeah he was… he really didnt have a comment or WANT to comment on it.

  19. ddebened

Thanks MAKO – I kind of sensed he was trying to hide his displeasure but didn’t want to throw anyone under the bus.

  20. MAKO

No problem he was all smiles as usual during the interview – I would hope that Torts will have something to say to the officials….

  21. NYRangersFan

Kessel might make them better but they will rot in the seller before that happens. Nothing against Lisin. I like him with Anisimov also but Kotalik is simply playing great. Avery and kotalik on the third line make up a very good third line and Anisimov is getting his offense going. He will still be a little challanged this year to score goals but will get plenty of assists. Especially if he centers Avery and Kotalik.

  22. CCCP

I miss posting during games!! So far this season i havent been able to do it! BUT… was that a great game or what?! I just finished watching… Who said coaching doesnt matter?! Safe is DEAD my children!! I cant even believe this is Rangers!! Love it!

    few thoughts…

whats up with all the crashing into Henrik? Better not let it happen again!

Orr vs Brash was an instant classic! Great fright! I was waiting for Orr to score…oh well..maybe next time.
The goals just keep on coming! We couldnt even dream aboot this type of offense!

The only thing that sux is that there is nothing to complain aboot! Hahah

  23. ZzZz NYR ZzZz " The King Vs The Kings , I can't wait !!! " ...says Greg L.

“UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The talk before the season was that the Los Angeles Kings were ready to contend for a playoff berth. Five games into the season, they’re turning words into deeds.

The Kings made it four wins in a row as Jonathan Quick, named earlier in the day as the NHL’s Second Star of the Week, continued his early-season excellence by stopping 28 shots Monday afternoon and leading the Kings to a 2-1 victory”

Gonna be another good test again a good young team . Beutey.

  24. Rob M

korpikoski with the game winner in the shootout to get the coyotes the win over the sharks, good for him nice to see that

  25. TR-808

wow. i left the bar when it went into ot. i shoulda stayed… oh well. good for the korpedo! i still feel like the coyotes are our farm team.

  26. Alex T

    My take on the game:

    – Fantastic at times in first and all of third. – Another strong efford by all “role”-players. Boyle is groing on me. Kotalik makes tha 4th line alot better. – First line great again. Gaborik is not making things easy for us fans, but he is brilliant at times. – Girardi with another stellar performance. All D was above average, even though Gilroy has been a bit quiet as of late. – Third line could be the best and most skilled “checking line” in the leauge. Arguably Averys best game as a Ranger. – Is Artem Anisimov turning into Sami Påhlsson? – Hank with a strong performance, and a soft goal. Grabby, you’ve jinxed him. – And once again Torts wakes the team up for the third.

  27. UKRanger

One thing that i think is having a big effect this year is that Torts is lighting a fire under their a$$es when necessary and the team are responding – could be that they are better conditioned and able to respond, or could be that this is the type of coach the team needed instead of one like Renney, who liked to try and look for positives and coddle the players a bit. Torts just tells it like it is and they seem to respond better.

Redden’s best game yet – can he keep it up?

  28. gregm-section_403

    Rick,

Awesome game. Everyone (well almost) is scoring! A well balanced attack.

But, what’s up with MSG saying it was another sellout? About an hour before the game, I went on ticketmaster and there were seats available in every price level … Dozens! So, are we supposed to believe that all the tix were sold in the last hour?

Is this all spin from MSG to make it seem like the Rangers are a hot ticket?

  29. tomb

Once Anisimov gets some attitude, he is going to be a monster. Our third line is admittedly goiong against the other third line, but they will be way more dominant than the second line in a few weeks.

Avery, thanks for giving us another forward who will hit somebody. Please teach Anisimov to plaster guys to the boards instead of pushing them and reaching for the puck.

This group has the potential to get a lot better and really dominate this season. I predicted in the offseason that we would beat Boston, Philly, New Jersey. I didnt think Philly was gonna be that good, but they have surprised me so far.

I watched that game two times already.

  30. Jeff M.

awesome game. wouldn’t it be great if Redden continues to play as he has so far this season? as much as we ripped into him last year, he’s really really improved and thrived under Torts so far. I am definetly rooting for him and if I were at the game last night, I would have given him a standing ovation during the announcement of the stars of the game. Love this team. and even though last year’s start should be a warning not to get over excited this early, i can’t help it. and this team is so drastically different than last years, this early start feels drastically different as well. if i had to gripe about anything, it would be that i’d love to see kotalik off the 4th line, but i have no idea where or who should be put on the 4th instead of him. i’d also like to see higgins finish, i think once he gets that first goal out of the way, he could gain a little consistancy. here’s to hoping. LGR!

  31. GIFT OF GAB-orik ( Vinny V )

Great game to watch, great offense… now i want to see that effort against a team than has some wins, and against a goalie who doesn’t have a GAA close to 5.

This years Rangers are really giving me hope for a great season, and giving me plenty of reasons to be excited. Top to bottom this lineup is getting stronger, and our D is really stepping up, even Redden.

Gaborik- Better than i could have hoped for
MDZ- I’ll admit i wasn’t impressed with this kid early on… now i’ll just shut up and let him play!
Gilroy- Confident with the puck, great skater
Avery- REAL GLAD to have him back
A.A.- should be good for a long time

  32. GIFT OF GAB-orik ( Vinny V )

THIS FROM AN ARTICLE IN TODAYS NEWSDAY…. MUST HAVE BEEN AN ISLANDER FAN…

” A New York City Police officer was suspended without pay Monday following his arrest Sunday on charges that he pointed his gun at a group of passengers on a Long Island Rail Road train while off duty, law enforcement officials said Monday.
According to MTA Police, Hendrick was riding a Ronkonkoma-bound train that left Penn Station at 9:17 p.m. Sunday, MTA police said.

MTA police said Hendrick was attempting to quiet down a group of unruly passengers on a train containing several hockey fans returning from a New York Rangers game at Madison Square Garden.

MTA and Nassau police removed Hendrick from the train at the Mineola station and arrested him, MTA police said. ”

HAHA…. ok which one of you guys was it???

  33. Joekuh

Really hard to call that 2nd goal a softie. Blake’s bank shot was a good one.
Great to see Redden be recognized last night. Wasn’t happy to see him get blown by during one rush. But for the rest of the game, he was solid defensively. If there’s one thing he’s good at, it’s breakout passes.
Gilroy + MDZ were VERY quiet last night. But, they didn’t give anything up defensively. So I’ll take that, their time will come.
    Orr/Brashear was great.
    LGR!

  34. GIFT OF GAB-orik ( Vinny V )

I’d say Blake’s goal was more luck than skill. Hank was in position, it just found it’s way through him. I have more of a problem with the ref’s swallowing their whistles when Hank was getting run.

If that happens on the other end and Avery is involved, you can put that penalty on the board right away. There was no attempt on the second one for whoever that was to get out of the way.

  35. New Newman

    Thoughts:

This team is super fun to watch and they are young, fast, and full of energy.

DRedden….slowly getting some life. BTW, the cheer when they announced his name after his goal last night spoke of, “OK, we’ll give you a clean slate this year…Go ahead. It’s your slate to dirty.”

    Girardi another solid game.

Gilroy is quiet but not making any huge gaffes. So he’s OK.

Brash/Orr…during their fight, I had this weird feeling that Orr was telling the fans, “Last year he got away from us, I had to take a shot at him.” Maybe I was just imagining that thought process…but I can dream right? I call the fight a draw.

Avery…welcome back kid. I think Torts’ summed it up perfectly in the presser. He basically said that Avery stayed within himself and out of the box. That is perfect. Keep it up Aves. We need you on the ice.

Cally continues to be a stud.

    Everyone else playing well.

Let’s not plan the Canyon of Heroes just yet though folks. We were 10-2-1 last year in the first 13 and we see how that ended up. It’s how you play in May, not how you play in October!

Like what I see so far though.

I was on that train. I was drinking all day so I passed out on the ride home and missed the action. Too bad.

  37. GIFT OF GAB-orik ( Vinny V )

I can’t imagine what would posess a NYPD cop to flash his gun just cuz some guys are celebrating a win?
    He’s a d-bag for doing it(if that’s indeed what happened)
If it’s that bad he could have switched cars on the train.

  38. Troj has a Zherdev jersey for sale... cheap !!

Last night there were mixed reactions in my section during the Orr Brashear fight. My 9 year old daughter asked me why and I told her the Orr was a Ranger last year but he got traded. So she replies with “oh now I know why he is so angry” !!! She had everyone rolling all night. Every game she come to she asks me why they say Potvin sucks when he doesn’t even play anymore…. I think she just likes that she gets to say Potvin sucks !!!

  39. somerset

I know its early but how weird is it to be ranked 1st in Goals for and 3rd in Goals against in the whole league???

    Averaging 4 goals a game …. I cant believe it !!!!

  40. Troj has a Zherdev jersey for sale... cheap !!

Oh and another very cool thing… riding home on the LIRR last night, got to sit next to former NHLer and long time LA King, Dave Taylor who was in town scouting for the Dallas Stars. Great guy, he got a kick out of it when I brought up the Barry Beck punch that exploded Rick Chartraw’s face back in the 81 playoffs !!! He was able to recall every detail of the Rangers-Kings bench clearing brawl and Nicky Fo in a suit applying a beating to the Kings backup goalie…. it was pretty cool, just thought I would share !

  41. Rob F

anyone read brooks’ article in the post this morning? what a douche

  42. Ilcat

I’m curious about the “sell-out” thing too. Remember that guy that worked for Sadaam Hussein who was always like “We’re annihilating the Americans at every turn. Their surrender is imminent!”...

And the Rangers are hosting a viewing of club seats this week to try to get rid of as-yet unsold season and partial packages.

The Rangers organization deserves better ownership…

  43. joe

haven’t read brooks yet, i’ll check it out later, after my dogs are finished with it

  44. Rob F

@ troj – your daughter sounds really freaking cute…that remark about being angry is hysterical

  45. ORR !! What Is It Good For ?!?!

Lol, Cops are such losers these days, must have been a jealous Islandorks fan.

Probably thought his team would have at least two wins, instead of being winless.

Good to see the Korpedo win the game last night. Yotes don’t look too bad.

  46. Pavel

Gilroy has just 1 point in 6 games.

    Bust.

    jk

  47. A F L Y

Troj – Orr wasn’t traded, free agent signing. Wish we were sitting next to you and your daughter instead of the guido and guidette sitting behind us in 316 though. She asked what everyone was yelling during the “Potvin Sucks” and when he didn’t answer, I explained it to her. But she only heard Pot-man for some reason no matter how much I corrected her. So I had to listen to her yelling “Pot-man sucks!” and then hear her brag that no matter how many “hot dawgs (thick unattractive Long Island accent)” she ate she didn’t gain any weight.

Thank god the Rangers were killing it on the ice.

  48. Laurel Babcock

Troj, that’s hysterical. Your daughter is a hoot.

Good morning Staal and all. Sorry I missed the online festivites last night, but what a game huh??

  49. SCX

A couple people mentioned that MDZ and Gilroy were “quiet, but didn’t make any big mistakes.” I think that’s all we can ask or ever hope for with 2 rookie D (especially a 19-year-old). Anything above that (great plays, scoring) is a total bonus. If they are just quiet, without major gaffes, all year, then that’s pretty darn great.

  50. Rob F

i don’t really understand the whole “well we were 5-0 last year and look what happened”

do you guys understand that tortorella’s system doesn’t allow for slackers? we had a MUCH different team last year, both talentwise and coach/systemwise

we were not winning games early last season as well as we are winning them this season

renney’s soft coaching is what allowed the team to slip last year, which is why he was fired

i know it IS early, but making comparisons to last year to me seems ludicrous

  51. kuppuck

funny with the best or tied for the best record in the NHL…...not more pot shots at sather anymore….....

  52. Staal Wart

I know its early but this team overall is playing fantastic!
I was pretty happy for Redden last night.

  53. Troj has a Zherdev jersey for sale... cheap !!

A F L Y….... thanks for the correction, I didn’t even realize I said that until reading that just now !!
And you were actually close, our seats are in 314 and she loves the Potvin Sucks chant because it’s the only time she gets to say sucks without getting in trouble !!
She had everyone in 314 cracking up….. especially when she looked up at the Jumbotron and yelled “look daddy, Avery scored his second goal of the game !!!”

  54. Staal Wart

Oh and Cally is flat out awesome! So far the “old kids” (Dubi, Cally etc) are really looking like they are hungry.
    2 enthusiastic thumbs up!!!

  55. Mike D.

Talk about making the correct decision. Gilroy was seriously considering signing with the Maple Leafs in the off-season: http://nyrangersblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/gilroy-was-close-to-signing-with-leafs.html

  56. GIFT OF GAB-orik ( Vinny V )

I love the passion they play with, and the edge most guys have to their game. Torts is A-OK in my book!

  57. ORR !! What Is It Good For ?!?!

Redden is slowly winning me over. He’s overpaid, and has a NTC, and he’s going nowhere, so all i ask is that he plays solid defense, i don’t care if he scores two goals again, i just want solid defense !

I wish Rozi can do the same, but when it comes to him, im always nervous, even though he played decent last night.

  58. GIFT OF GAB-orik ( Vinny V )

Microcosm of the season thus far…

6 games in, and 4 of our 6 D men have goals. Torts system in a nutshell.

  59. Rick Carpiniello

    new post.

  60. Miami Pimp

I’m nominating Brashear for the Nobel Peace Prize

  61. theflynn

Hey Ilcat\\So you remember Bagdad Bob? You’re a true believer. I thought sure that he’d wind up on the Letterman show along with Tariq Aziz, who said that his Republican Guard would “eat our troops flesh”, because this “wasn’t Panama and would be “no picnic”.

    Well…nobody’s perfect.
