Duck hunting (updated)

60

The Rangers have played four games, and won three in a row, with the same 19 players. But today they expect two lineup changes. Sean Avery goes in and somebody — Aaron Voros or Enver Lisin, we suspect — comes out. And Steve Valiquette plays goal to give Henrik Lundqvist a breather in the first of back-to-back and three-in-four-nights at MSG.

So much going on today: Giants, Yankees, other NFL games, other MLB playoffs, the Presidents’ Cup (I may be in the minority on that one, but I live match-play formats), and of course Ducks-Rangers at 5 p.m. No way you can watch all of them, and I have a family function around dinner time so I might not get to watch any of them. I’ll catch Rangers in 60, I guess.

The plan is that I will be at MSG tomorrow night for the Leaves (isn’t it time we get gramatically correct with that name?).

I’ll check in later when the Rangers post their pregame notes.

Enjoy.

Here are the pregame notes (just for feedback sake, do you guys check out these notes when I post the link? do you download the long version?).

  1. Boyle out, Avery center fourth line? Probably not a good idea but just a thought. Be at the bar from 1 til 10:30? No cable and I need to see my Bills, Rangers, and Yankees.
Man work will be rough tomorrow.

On the Heatley (vs. Hossa) comment:
I can understand people being upset that Heatley got a second chance in Ottawa (post-Snyder incident) and seems ungrateful for that. It’s true, the guy is developing a reputation as a player who 1) NEEDS to be needed and 2) ONLY wants to be part of cup contenders (not rebuilding teams).

However, to say that Ottawa traded away a BETTER player for him in Hossa is truly under-rating Heater’s skills. Heatley is a point per game (PLUS) player, Hossa is NOT. Heatley has over a point per game in playoff performances (Hossa is about .75 pts/game). Heatley is only outscored in points post-lockout by 3 players (Thornton, Ovechkin, Crosby). Hossa is #12 and they’ve played the same number of games. Heatley is also a +86 since then while HOssa is a +30 (both of them splitting the 4 years with 2 good and 2 bad teams, arguably, Hossa having the 2 GOOD teams as cup contenders).

Heatley doesn’t get the props he deserves for his on-ice skills and Hossa is too often over-rated.

  3. as i said in the last posrt i turned 21 yesterday and im looking for my first hockey bar experience, any good ones by the garden?

Carp, thank you for the post. Fortunately, i’m a bit younger so I don’t have the family and stuff to worry about but if you were to ask me NOW about those things…
    1) If it ain’t the President’s “Trophy” then I’m not following.
    2) If it’s not the World Series, the Rangers take precedence.
    3) Commercials and intermissions were created to get football updates.
    4) Family functions can be circumvented via radio, Orb, or an incontinent bladder. Your call.

Give me some years and I’m sure those will change, but hopefully they’ll have like sunglasses TV’s by then.

  5. Good afternoon, Carp! It just took me like 5 minutes to get that Leaves comment. I guess I’m a little slow today…

LOL RangerAndy! You’ve got quite a day ahead of you!

  6. Happy late birthday, jcalz5! I liked watching games at Plan B on Vanderbilt in Brooklyn. I guess it wasn’t that special, but they were always so nice. Also, good wings.

  7. I don’t blame anyone for wanting to be on a Cup contender. What’s the point of playing, if you never get a chance to win the Cup. I mean, the money is really good, obviously, but i lose my mind after losing a fuggin game in NHL10, i don’t even wanna know how id react to missing the playoffs.

I don’t blame Heatley at all. Heatley is in his prime, and the Sens just aren’t good enough to win the Cup, why waste time there ? Same deal with Lecavalier, except he’s already won a Cup. But he’s definitely gonna ask for a trade at some point.

And Ortmeyer scored last night !!!! God Ortsy ! And Heatley has 5 goals in his last three games now, so he’s getting it together.

  8. Good afternoon, Sally. Not as slow as I am. I got home after 1 a.m. from a football game on Long Island and slept all morning … hence the late post.

    How are you feeling?

True Fans … I know about the bladder/update scheme. But I do care about the other sports, and not just because of my job. I like the sunglasses/TV idea. Want to try to patent it?

  9. True Fans … in addition to that, how about:
    A) A rollout tie dispenser?
    B) A sunroof periscope for seeing traffic ahead?
    C) A pizza place where you make your own pies?
    D) Ketchup and mustard in the same bottle?
    E) A rubber-ball bladder to line oil tankers?
    F) Mouth vacuums?
    G) Levels?

  10. BTW

Anybody who has NHL10 for PS3 , we should get a league started. I just joined one as the Kings, and im 2-0, but the league is full of losers who quit when they realize there’s no chance of wining. Id rather start a league with people that have some fuggin honor !

  11. Orr I’ve got NHL for PS3…how many games do you have a chance to play a week? I don’t want to hold anyone up if I can’t keep up the pace

  12. Haha! I’m feeling much better, Carp, thanks for asking. I’m almost 100%, but I’d be a lot happier if I didn’t have a research methods midterm on Tuesday :/

The TV/sunglasses idea is good, but is there any reason we can’t just get the TVs implanted directly into our brains?

Carps full of good ideas today!

  13. My ID is Freburg…I dunno if I can get 30 games a week in…I usually get about 10/wk in my Franchise at most

  14. I def wouldn’t stop playing, but I have a Madden online franchise too to keep up with…If I get some time freed up I’ll def let u know but hit me up on PS3 and we can play randomly…I guess one of us can’t be Rangers huh lol

  15. hey Carp, a football Sunday and hockey at MSG. Tho we’re not going to this one. We sold it. I would keep Boyle in for his PK work and sit Voros. We need Brashear in because of Parros.

Plus the third line showed a pulse versus Washington. So, they stay put. Staal and Girardi did a nice job versus Ovie. Now, they get the big line centered by Getzlaf. We’ll see how they do.

Let’s go Vally! And Avery returns.

  16. Sally

research methods SUCKS!!!!! Hated that class!!

My horrible @ssed raiders play the giants today, another loss, c’mon first pick in the draft!!

    Carp,
They have bluetooth audio sunglasses already, the next LOGICAL step is to make a semi-transluscent screen which fits into (or projects on) the glasses, turn that bluetooth into stereo, and you have the sports fan’s dream. Forget those old fashion wire a headset through the coat tricks, designer sunglasses or reading glasses become a mobile theater.

Next, i’m working on the logistics of the helicopter ejector seat and the solar powered submarine, stay tuned.

could you figure out a way to get pillows or cushions above urinals in the mens room. You know after a “good” night of drinking, you go to the restroom and you kind of want to lean against the wall….pillows/cushions would make it so much more comfy!!

  19. Wicky, you feel my pain! I’m pretty miserable.

True Fans, you know what would be really great? If you could design some sort of blanket that has sleeves. I know it’s crazy, but…

  20. Orr. I got NHL 10 for ps3. I only played online a couple times but my name online is jiveseed I think

  21. Damn it, again, another league game, and somebody quits ! I cant take this.

Ill add you Jive, so far that’s probably, you, me, Nyrguy, Jcalz, and i gotta see if CCCP, Shor, and Jaymz will join. Gotta get some more people.

To make it fair, maybe we can play some playoff matches, and who ever goes undefeated, instead of winning the Cup, they win the chance to play as NYR.

  22. JCalz Stout is a good choice for a “classier” pub. Blarney Stone a few doors over is where a bit of a grittier type of fan does their pre/post game drinking. Either way bottoms up and enjoy.

  23. Sally

HAHAHAHA Yep it is… it was a big thing in the 80’s. Im sure you can find one on eBay LOL

  24. sally

internal consistency is what adam graves has. No matter what happens, he will always stand up for his teammates, finish his body checks, and work his butt off. Also know as intestinal fortitude!

Split half reliability is what the defence partner of rozy must have. Rozy is horrible, so who ever is paired with him must be the reliable d man due to the fact that rozy will not offer any support or help at all, thus giving rozy’s partner the “split half reliability”!

Other than that, I’m probably not much help. I had my methods class as an undergrad. I played football in college and my degree was one of the “jockologies” (sociology) as they were called and I had to take the class to graduate, socially loafed through it with a “C”. Couldn’t tell you three things that I remembered from it!! Sorry, if I had had it in my masters program (I actually paid attention getting that degree), I might be of some help to you! Sorry again (i do remember hating that methods class though, one of the three things I do remember).

  25. LETS GO RANGERS!!!! T – Minus 2 hours!!!!

    Rangers win 4 – 2.

Drury, Dubinsky, Prospal & Kotalik will score – Gabby with 2 assists ;)

That is my BOLD prediction =D

  26. Reeshay (or Riche') on

    Carp,

I’m at the Pres. Cup… yesterday was the day to watch… this one is gonna be over early. Plus it’s gray and cold here… not much fun.

  27. Carp – That stinks that you can’t get to today’s game! Oh well.

Avery and Valiquette in, Voros out as reported by Zipay and Gross.

At least there’s no local football game at 4:00, but I’ll be flipping between ATL-SF and NE-DEN on TV while watching the Rangers online/on Slingbox.

  28. Gravey - Formerly known as Jor71 on

According to Zipay on Twitter, Avery in and Voros is out. Vally will start tonight, not surprised on that one.
