DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that it has acquired defensemanBrian Fahey from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Nigel Williams
Fahey, 28, recorded 24 points (4g/20a) in 66 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL) in 2008-09. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound blueliner spent the 2007-08 campaign with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, where he helped lead the club to the Calder Cup title by recording 10 points (2g/8a) in 24 postseason contests.
A native of Glenview, Illinois, Fahey was originally Colorado’s seventh selection (119th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Fahey played collegiately at the University of Wisconsin, where he was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team in 1999-2000.
Williams, Colorado’s second selection (second round, 51st overall) in the 2006 Entry Draft, totaled 21 points (7g/14a) in 70 games for the Lake Erie Monsters during the 2008-09 campaign.

Here’s the Rangers’ release on the Williams-Fahey trade (which really probably isn’t worth all this space, but, hey, it’s the internet):

Acquire Nigel Williams from Avalanche

New York, July 16, 2009 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Nigel Williams from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenseman Brian Fahey.
Williams, 21, skated in 70 games with the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League (AHL) last season, registering seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points, along with 55 penalty minutes.  The rookie defenseman ranked seventh on the team overall and second among Lake Erie defensemen in points.  He also tied for the team lead among defensemen in goals scored.  Williams posted a season-high, three-game point streak from January 10 against Hamilton to January 13 vs. Quad City, collecting three points (one goal and two assists) over the span.  He also recorded his first career multi-point performance with two assists on March 28 at Syracuse.  Williams notched a goal in his professional debut on October 11 against Grand Rapids.
The 6-4, 226-pounder skated in 113 career regular season contests with the Saginaw Spirit and Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) prior to turning pro, registering 32 goals and 50 assists for 82 points, along with 192 penalty minutes.  In 2007-08, Williams split the season between Saginaw and Belleville, and established OHL career-highs in games played (67), assists (31) and points (46).  As an OHL rookie in 2006-07, he set a career mark with 17 goals.  In addition, Williams has collected 21 points (nine goals and 12 assists) in 27 career OHL playoff contests with Saginaw and Belleville.  He tied for fourth on the Bulls in playoff assists (11) and points (18), and tied for fifth on the team in goals (seven) during the 2008 OHL Playoffs.
Williams also skated with the U.S. National Under-18 Development Team during the 2005-06 season, registering three goals and four assists for seven points, along with 23 penalty minutes in 19 games.
The Aurora, Illinois native was originally Colorado’s second round choice, 51st overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
Fahey, 28, appeared in 66 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL) last season, collecting four goals and 20 assists for 24 points, along with 67 penalty minutes.

  1. Hopefully Orty will make the 4th line for the Sharks. I miss seeing him play in the NHL. Although im happy, cause i hated thinking aboot the day we would have to see him play against us.

Gotta love the guy. Nothing but heart, and balls.

  2. “This guy alone will win us the Cup, and help release a Megan Fox sex tape, all in the same year.

    Cheers !”

lol nice. I have no idea who this kid is but Ideally Fahey, someone we signed last year right?, fetched us a 2nd rounder young guy…doesnt sound too horrible to me eh?

  3. His ohl numbers look nice considering he’s a D-man but thats pretty much irrelevant when it comes to the NHL.

  4. Dont know if this means much but according to Hockey’s future. Nigel Williams was ranked 3rd in Colorado’s Prospect List.

  5. #3 prospect for a career minor leageur? I’ll take it. Is this part of the Aronson deal?

  6. i am thinking of putting my NY plates back on my car and telling an HPD officer or Alabama state trooper that my lawyer is Seth Katz! I wonder what’d happen!

    Funniest headline about Dawes ….

Damnit, now I gotta check the Preds schedule to see when they play the Sharks! Would love to see Ortmeyer!!!! I might come home to NY for a Rangers game this coming season..with the man going back to school full time, I don’t think we can take a 3 day vacation. If I make it back home, would love to meet up with some of you knuckleheads!!

  7. I like the quote “unusually good puck handling and skating skills” it’s very nice.

  8. this guy obviously isn’t that great of a prospect or else they wouldn’t have given him up for a career minor leaguer…

  9. I really don’t get why the Avalanche made this trade. Williams is actually a pretty decent prospect, while Fahey is a 28 year old career minor leaguer who from all accounts, was terrible for Hartford.

  10. “this guy obviously isn’t that great of a prospect or else they wouldn’t have given him up for a career minor leaguer”

You’re right, this isn’t something to get excited over.

The Korp/Lisin deal is different. Both have a future, and a ton of potential, so it’s pretty much a wash, unless one becomes a bust, then the other team get screwed in the end.

Hopefully Korp is nothing more than a 4th liner, and Lisin becomes a 20-30 goal scorer.

  11. Ocarina,

Fahey was awful all year, had concussion problems and clearly didn’t want to be there.

  12. Orr

the thing is hockeysfuture has him as their #3 prospect and considering his numbers (7 goals and 14 assists +1) in his rookie season in the AHL (at age 20) this a complete steal for us.

  13. Can’t complain about this deal…while Williams might be a bust we already know that Fahey is. What’s not to like about that?

  14. “Sather has always been decent on trades.” I will NEVER forgive him for acquiring that lazy-ass, whiner LINDROS. Wonder if he is milking cows yet?

    Where is Brandon Dubinsky?

    I got a better question

    Where is Michael Jackson?

  16. Savard for Hlavac and eventually Lundmark? worst trade I remember. I remember hating that one when it happened.

  17. while sather has made some terrible signings, some of his trades have been amazing.

Jagr for Anson Carter (and Washington pays 60% of Jagr’s contract) was a complete steal.

  18. per wiki.

The New York Rangers acquired Bure on March 18, 2002, along with Florida’s 2nd round pick in the 2002 draft (Lee Falardeau) for Igor Ulanov, Filip Novak, as well as the Rangers’ 1st and 2nd round choices in the 2002 draft (Petr Tatí?ek and Rob Globke, respectively) and a 4th round choice in the 2003 draft.

i was very excited when Bure came here! He scored like 50 point in 51 career games for NYR! I remember when we got him at the end of the season he scored a goal in every game!

12 goals and 20 points in last 12 games of the season! he was great, too bad we got him too late.

  19. minor move but a good one on the surface, Fahey was never going to do anything but take ice time away from kids

6’4″ and 7 years younger than Fahey… not a bad move for Hartford

I see this as someone to take Potter or Sauer’s spot on the farm as one or both of them stick with NY this year, it moves out the top offensive dman there so a young guy like maybe Sanguinetti can take over the #1 PP QB job and develop some more and also gives the wolf pack a big dude to protect the prospects. Judging by his PIMs I’d say he doesn’t mind dropping the gloves.

Plus he was a 2nd rounder, maybe he’s got a shot at the NHL someday… not likely if all NY gave up is Fahey but… you never know.

  20. July 3, 2003

Sabres acquired center Chris Drury and Steve Begin from Calgary for Steve ReinprechtRhett Warrener, and Keith Ballard.

  21. one of the biggest trades in Rangers history:

F Hugh Jessiman to Nashville for future considerations!

might as well traded him for a bucket of air!

  22. OLEO

On paper it definitely is a steal, and i didn’t realize that he i coming off his rookie year, so you never know, maybe he might be decent, but at the same time, the Avs must know something aboot him that we don’t.

But eh, more depth on D, i cant complain. And like Mike D said, we already knew Fahey was a bust, so it’s worth the gamble.

Also, if he’s great in the AHL, then that’s perfect. Im hoping the Wolf Pack can win the Calder, that’s why i want PA Par on the team, and guys like Krog, they might suck at the NHL level, but at least their like baby Gretzky’s down in the AHL.

  23. Best EA trade in EA history !!

NHL 09 – Redden to the Jackets for a 1st round pick !

Funny thing is, NOW it doesn’t work. It’s almost like the game realizes he sucks in real life, so there’s no point in getting him in the game.

My season just ended in the game, and his numbers were 0 goals, 20 assists. Horrible !! He’s going to Dallas with Rozi. Unfortunately he’s gonna have to win a free Cup, while Del Z, Zubov, Gilroy, Staal, and Danny G do all the work on the blue line. Loser !!

  24. I heard Michael Jackson was interested in trying out for baseball..He wanted to start with the “Minors”..He and Elton John were supposed to collaborated on a new version of..Dont Let Your Son Go Down on Me.

  25. onecupin69years and counting on

I’ve been collecting air sick bags from airlines in preparation for watching the Rangers this upcoming season.
    BLAAAHHH gaggggg caaacccc blaaaahhh

  26. there is Del z in NHL 09? i haven’t seen him!

Redden aint that bad in the game though… physical and skates well!

  27. CCCP — that’s too lopsided in the Rangers’ favor, I’m sure that bucket has value!

  28. ZzZz 13 ZzZz Arbitration saga continues and is getting uglier and uglier!!!... says Greg L. on

a whingo whip~ a whingo whip~ —la dee dee dum dum awayyyy!!

  29. Rangers trade Brian Leetch to Toronto for Maxim Kondratiev, Jarkko Immonen, a 1st round pick in 2004 and a 2nd round pick in 2005 (Michael Sauer).

wow… this trade should’ve made VH1 show “Where are they now!” lol

  30. I vanted a vatch for mines birthday, Mr Cheepo says Vats wrong vits the clock on mine stove!!

  31. Orr

funny thing is in my NHL 09, Redden finishes in the top 10 in Norris voting every year. That was before i edited the rosters to make them realistic.

  32. acquiring more young (and apparently decent) d men. Anyone think maybe, just maybe that there is a deal coming down the road and a couple of d prospects are going!?!? Hated losing verbeek, ulfie, simon (yes him, he played well here for us), brad brown, lappy, norstrom, zubov (but it got us ulfie, so I accept that one I guess), churla, avery (glad he is back, pilon, and reitz (yes he was out of shape, but man could he hit) to name a few over the last decade or so!!!

and this trade accomplishes what? haha

sather felt bad that there is no news so he just traded somebody!

  35. I had a girfriend in college who played with my chips.
    Sather reminds me of her.

yOu can’t lose. stay in every hand. as long as you’re playing you have a chance.

yes she always lost it all. but I was OKay with that.

Sather is dolan’s girlfriend. he likes him so much he will keep giving him chips. It won’t break him but it will keep Sather happy

  36. Just read through Tort’s comments on the 1st line center he says Dubi, and AA are going to get a shot if they dont work out in training camp then the originazation will look to acquire a top line center (atleast thats what I took from the comments). Not once was Drury’s name mentioned we pay him 7 mill a year and he is not even being considered a canidate for the top line center if that doesnt say you royally F’D up then I dont know what does.

Also Carp are other teams willing to trade a big time center ala Marleau, Richards, Sharp, ect. during training camp it just seems to me it would be much more difficult because those teams wont have enough time to plan accordingly for the season.

    ref the WIlliams deal.

Hockey futures are pretty accurate from what i have found and they rate his talent as a ‘7.0b’

that means a no 3-4 D man and the b means his talent is likely to project accurately or maybe slip a notch which would mean no.5-6 D man. So if this is true, eventually we have oursleves a big sized NHL defenceman for an AHL’er – good deal.

I have followed their site for a few years and alot of what they said has been true, even if prospects are an inexact science.

  38. this deal pretty minor and insignificant now, but it could turn out to be pretty big in a few years. could be a 4 or 5 d man with size and we could use more big physical d men like him in the system. alot of these small trades and signings are done for a reason. even if its nothing more than trying to get younger, we did that.

  39. Rome wasn’t built in a day. It takes time to build a championship team. The Rangers should forget about trying to get a #1 center or a physical d-man and see what we have in house first.

If Anisimov or Dubinsky doesn’t step up this year then you go out next off season or at the deadline and get a #1 center…

  40. Ya gotta just love all these moves and signings Sather is making. With the system and and type of players torts wants for his new system this is gonna be a fun team to watch for the next few years(we hope.)
The pre-season games should be a blast with so many spots pretty much open.
I still say there must be a significant trade coming.

  41. Its a great deal when you can trade a loser career minor leaguer for a prospect with potential to be an NHLer.

Lots of d-men lead me to believe the rangers will have three “new” for rotation at 5-6-7. Rest in Hartford. DZ will get another year of junior or make the team. Either way Hartford will have a glut of new defensemen. But sadly none will wear Redden on their backs.

  42. Laurel Babcock on

Beth, send them my way! Carp, let those who prefer knuckleheads keep it will ya!

  43. Hey I saw Ron Greschner on TV the other day . He looked like he could still play. He would block shots for sure.

  44. audiosmirf

This statement about waiting to take a look at the kids is the best thing that they can do for now. They will always have time to engineer a trade later on for someone if they find that they need it. But look at all the young kids that came up to the NHL and stuck -look at Toews and Kane Filppula, sid baby, Greene, etc. Why not give it a look?

  45. I feel like Sather is really trying to get some D going for now and the future…D seems to be a stand-out point on building the Rangers…save for the Redden contract.
