Callahan signs, avoids arbitration (updated)

As expected. Here’s the release:

New York, July 13, 2009 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with forward Ryan Callahan.
Callahan, 24, established career-highs in games played (81), goals (22), assists (18), points (40), and penalty minutes (45) last season.  He also won the Steven McDonald Award, voted by the fans as the player who performs “above and beyond the call of duty.”  Callahan ranked second on the team with a career-high, 237 shots, first with a plus-seven rating and tied for fourth on the club in goals.  In addition, he led the team and ranked fourth in the NHL with 265 hits.  Callahan posted a team-high, six-game scoring streak from March 12 at Nashville to March 22 against Ottawa, recording eight points (four goals and four assists) over the span, and tied for the team-high with a three-game goal streak (March 17 at Montreal to March 22 vs. Ottawa).  He reached the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his career on March 28 at Pittsburgh, and skated in his 100thNHL contest on December 16 at Anaheim.  Callahan also skated in all seven playoff games with the Rangers, and tied for the team lead with two goals.
On June 30th, the Rochester, New York native was one of 34 players who were invited to the U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Camp to be held August 17 to 19.
Callahan has skated in 147 career regular season games in three seasons with the Rangers, registering 34 goals and 25 assists for 59 points, along with 85 penalty minutes.  He ranked fourth in the NHL among rookies with 139 hits and tied for third on the team with a plus-seven rating during the 2007-08 season.  He finished that season recording a plus or even rating in 36 of his last 40 contests.  In 2006-07, Callahan tallied two goals, including his first career NHL point, on March 17 against Boston.  He made his NHL debut on December 1, 2006 at Buffalo.  In addition, Callahan has skated in 27 playoff contests with the Rangers, recording six goals and three assists for nine points, along with 20 penalty minutes.
Callahan was originally the Rangers’ fourth round selection, 127th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

EVENING UPDATE: Hey, everybody, it’s Carp and I want to say something here.

The tone of this blog has gotten a bit, shall we say, off course lately. You guys know it’s about hockey, and that we stray to include other interests, mostly in good fun. We’ve had some hysterical laughs here, for sure.

But there are some things that aren’t going right. One of them is the personal stuff. It has happened among a bunch of you lately. It’s not acceptable. It’s not good. Nobody wants to see it or hear it. And I certainly don’t want to ban anybody if I don’t have to … but I will.

Also, the name calling. Let’s try to be a little more sensitive, OK? It takes a lot more creativity to come up with a point that to simply bash somebody’s race or sexual preference or to simply call him/her a $%&@!. Again, not acceptable.

And finally, the fraud factor. Don’t post as somebody else. Your screen name should belong to you. I’d hate to go through technical hoops to force everybody to use a working, legit email address and to make it so that it will be impossible for anybody other than the original person to use a screen name. Again, if I have to do it, I will.

This stuff really makes me lose a lot of my enthusiasm for this blog, and I’m sure it has the same effect on others, our good readers, our Boneheads, the Festivus bunch, Capt. Clutch and everybody else. If I lose my enthusiasm, this thing will suffer. Ditto if our real, loyal blog-folks lose theirs. Let’s clean it up, OK?

If you have something that needs to be ironed out, you can always email me at and we’ll try to fix it. Thanks to all.

Here’s a link to the Coyotes’ announcement of the Korpikoski trade

About Author

  1. Its not good to make snap judgments on rumors, but James Mirtle reports that the Rangers may have traded Lauri Korpikoski to Phoenix.

If true, Phoenix is an obvious choice because GM Don Maloney, loved Korpikoski and pushed for the Rangers to draft him when he was the Rangers assistant GM.

Will report more if/when more comes available

  2. Who the hell on Phoenix is even worth Korpi? What, did Sather want Prucha, Dawes, and Montoya back?

    No givesies backsies, dammit!

  3. as i said in the previous post..its not a nothing monday, and that is my belated bday gift from crazy yeti!!

  4. onecupin69years and counting on

sather is like an old frontier trader ,he trades with the same clubs,Coyotes, leafs and oilers. What hidden treasures these club have , I don’t know? he gets journeyman players and draft choices in return.he still hasn’t uncovered any gold

  5. great to wrap up Cally –

sending the Korpedo to the west is ok – he’s a grinder.

  6. What the HECK on

Does anyone know how much we got Cally for? And I wouldn’t mind having Prucha back and I don’t think Torts would mind either. What we need right now is an experienced Dman though, someone who can take a one timer.

  7. Maloney confirms the deal and says that the Rangers acquire Enver Lisin.

…Riiiiight…..anyone know who the hell that is?

  8. Guys- I hate Voros as much as anyone, But did’nt he play on a line with Gaborik in Minnesota?

  9. cally gets 2 years $1.8 million as per zipay. dubi should get about the same. voros did play with gaborik in minne

  10. As per the hockeyftures article

Says he played 17 games for pho before he was reassigned to the AHL, he refused and was suspended, and we went back to russia to play.

But since then he has really matured and earned the trust of his coaches, etc.
Was this trade made just for contract reasons?

  11. From the Twitter —

NYR trade Korpikoski to PHX for Lisin. Interesting trade. Very even on the surface even though they’re quite different players. #nhl

  12. What the HECK on

13 goals in 48 games? Sign me up…

    Gomez-16 goals in 77 games
    Dubinsky 13 in 82

This sounds like a great deal to me…except the fact that we really needed Defensemen

  13. Carp –

What are we missing?? Young guy for young guy? Seems like a strange trade for both sides. Salaries are probably a wash – Korpikoski showed potential. Is it just a case where the GMs like the other kid better or is this maybe a precursor to another move, like maybe some team wanted Lisin in a deal????

  14. What the HECK on

As much as I criticize the guy…Sather hasn’t done that bad so far. I’m sure once the season starts and I witness how much Defense we are missing and how Gaborik breaks in the first game I’ll get right on his tail. He has been addressing our one huge problem last season though, putting the puck into the net.

And can anyone else see Dubs playing well with Gaborik? I think he just needs a bigger name by his side to succeed.

  15. Skating: An amazing skater…the fastest Russian skater and possibly the fastest skater in the world born in ’86…excellent technique. — Russian hockey prospects

  16. Agreed on the bickering Carp

Don’t we Rangers fans have the rest of the NHL’s fans to constantly defend ourselves against? We dont need to fight with each other

  17. lisin is a good player. picked in later round than korpi, but i think hes better offensively. good potential to be 20g guy.

  18. I have Lisin on a dynasty fantasy hockey league so I know a little bit about him. He is very fast, maybe a replacement for Zherdev, at least more so than Kotalik. I haven’t watched him that much, so I would say he is similar to Korpikoski except a right wing (Why? we need LW). Clearly, Maloney likes the people that he helped draft. I don’t think Lisin plays any penalty kill, so that makes me more worried for that aspect of our team.

  19. good stuff aaron. i hate the imposters and the fighting on here. its pretty immature.

  20. i LOVE!!!!!!!! Enver Lisin! I am so happy we got somebody with a great future ahead of them. A great player for a great player.

  21. Thanks for the note about the blog — it is turning me off —

I’m here to talk hockey. Let’s leave the other stuff behind.

  22. Laurel Babcock on

Carp, excellent comment. It’s July and everyone’s rabid, but the point is to keep this about hockey and have fun. Geez, I warned you guys (not the bad guys).

asides: Balcony Bob…nice catch. Here’s his obit.

Linda, yay! Let’s pray for Sally and Dubi…

stf..whatever. read what Carp said above.

  23. Plus/minus is the worst stat in hockey. It’s a reflection of how good or bad your team is at even strength. It’s not a defensive stat as many hockey analysts will argue — Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky always had great plus stats. When the Rangers were awful, Brian Leetch was a minus player. Why? Because he played 28 minutes a night on a dreadful even-strength team. Are you going to tell me that Colin White, who was always a big plus, I imagine, on a great even-strength team, is better defensively than Brian Leetch? Not.

  24. I heard they only signed Cally for two years… was hoping at least 3. What happens when he gets better and wants to get paid?

Jesus Sather do you know how to handle RFAs or not? CALLY IS THE REAL DEAL LOCK HIM DOWN CHEAP @ 4 YEARS YOU SILLY DUNCE!

Carp am I allowed to rant about Sather? Or is that too negative

  25. Lisin is a speed demon with great hands and plays a 2-way game. go on youtube and check out some of his highlights…truly special.

13 goals in 48 games for the Coyotes last season is pretty impressive.

  26. noonan

well if you want Cally at 3 or 4 years, you have to pay out more money which we dont have the luxury of doing…

  27. I really hope Redden gets his stuff together this season, we could really use a nice first pass to help set up some of the speed we acquired

  28. Just saw on a couple of Coyotes blogs (I know I was surprised they had any too) that they sound upset about trading Lisin – guess that’s a good sign for us. My guess is Torts makes him great or run to Russia!

Thanks, Carp. I did not like the way things were heading. And, folks, don’t encourage them by responding. If you ignore them, hopefully, they’ll get bored and go elsewhere where they can provoke somebody.

  30. Guys

In terms of the length of a contract, does it ever dawn on you that the PLAYER is asking for these terms?

Seems to make sense Cally wanted a raise, got one, but only wanted 2 years, He probably figures he will improve, and will want a bigger raise after 2 years

  31. Good stuff Carp I agree- this is my number 1 hockey blog- Interesting day here though- is this setting up another deal or is it simply rounding out are team?

1.8 is a number that puts Z back into the equation in my opinion- has that been confirmed btw?

  32. Just finished watching highlights on youtube of lisin looks very talented hopefully he is not lazy like some other russians we have had here (Kovalev Zheredev) hell if you put him and Gaborik on a line together the other team might have to get rockets attached to their skates to catch them LOL.

  33. Carp,

Thanks for laying down the hammer. I honestly haven’t been as prone to coming to look at the comments since things took a turn for the…bizarre.

That said, did Sather (gulp) make another good trade?

(Vince Lombardi voice) What the hell is going on out here?!

    Phoenix Coyotes
    Monday, July 13, 2009

GLENDALE, ARIZONA — Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have acquired left wing Lauri Korpikoski from the New York Rangers in exchange for right wing Enver Lisin.

Korpikoski, 22, appeared in 68 games with the Rangers last season as a rookie, recording 6-8-14 and 14 penalty minutes (PIM). He also collected two assists while appearing in all seven of the Rangers’ playoff games last season.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Korpikoski spent the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons with Hartford of the American Hockey League (AHL) where he registered 34-54-88 and 94 PIM in 157 games. He also played in five games for Hartford in 2005-06, collecting 2-1-3. A native of Turku, Finland, Korpikoski represented Finland at the 2005 and 2006 World Junior Championship tournaments. He helped lead Finland to the bronze medal in 2006 while ranking T-5th in assists (5) among all players in the tournament,

Korpikoski was originally selected by the Rangers in the first round (19th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to his North American career, Korpikoski played two seasons of professional hockey in Finland.

Lisin, 23, recorded 13-8-21 and 24 PIM in 48 games with the Coyotes last season. In 78 career NHL games, all with the Coyotes, Lisin has registered 18-10-28 and 46 PIM.

  35. “well if you want Cally at 3 or 4 years, you have to pay out more money which we dont have the luxury of doing…”

Yea you spread that money out over four years @ a little bit less per year.

Look at Franzen. Took less money for mad years.. who wouldn’t? It’s guaranteed!

  36. ThisyearsModel on

Enver Lisen? All those good prospects in Phoenix and we get Lisen? Hard to figure where he fits. Unless he is headed to Boston, San Jose or Ottawa in another deal.

  37. Hey noonan, all we did was buy out a rfa year- It’s sort of like baseball- the arbitration years are cheap to buy out- once you start buying out free agent years its much more expensive- which could have been the smart way to go- however it seems as though we are trying to save cap room for something-

  38. Laurel Babcock on

Should be an interesting morning tomorrow :) Keep coming back Report faithful….Carp rules, don’t forget that….nite.

  39. Enver Lisin (born April 22, 1986 in Moscow, Russia) is a Russian ice *football* player currently playing for the New York Rangers organization. He was Russian champion in bear fighting in 2006 and won European champion’s cup in 2007 after killing Winnie the Pooh.

He is known for being a very fast date.[1] His nickname in the Coyotes locker room is Webster

  40. It really is kind of funny, this whole Maloney thing. I mean, I understand he drafted all these guys, and I do see potential upside in Dawes, Prucha, Montoya, and Korpikoski, but isn’t it pretty clear by now that these guys are not key players? Does he expect these four guys to help lead Phoenix back into contention for a playoff spot? I just don’t see it.

  41. Enver Lisin is pretty fuggin fast, hopefully he does well with us. Not exactly the trade i was hoping to hear from, but if this means we may get Z back, then im all for it. But at the same time, it sucks to lose Korp, i was hoping he would become a worthy 1st round pick, now either way, that 1st round was a bust.

And what the fugg is with Maloney ? Bourett, Montoya (Which may still be a good pick), Korp, Pruchs, Dawes. Who’s next ?

Rozi better be the next to go !!! Time to dump Korp in NHL 09 !

  42. Interesting from hockeysfuture about our development camp…

Standouts among the defensemen were Gilroy, Heikkinen, Kundratek, and Dowzak. Gilroy is very fast, confident with the puck, and sees the lanes very well. He can move the puck quickly, but doesn’t panic with it. His passes are accurate and he also has a good shot. The combination of Gilroy’s offensive skills with his solid play in his own zone made Gilroy very impressive this week.

Heikkinen has very good on-ice vision, an excellent shot, and moves well along the blueline to find shooting lanes. He contributed to much of the offense in Friday’s scrimmage and should be competing for a spot on the Rangers blueline in September.

Somewhat disappointing this week was the play of Del Zotto, who had not been on the ice for several months and looked rusty. He was often beaten to the puck, displayed poor positioning, and did not have good gap control. More will be expected of Del Zotto when he takes the ice in the Traverse City Rookie Tournament in September.

Here’s the link to the whole thing..

  43. if this deal is official then next goal will be to trade roszival plus prospects/picks for a play-making center, say brad richards.

then you go into camp with this in pencil:

    lisin richards gaborik
    higgins drury kotalik
    avery dubi cally
    byers boyle brashear

    not bad.

  44. glad to hear the prelim scouting report that lisin is fast….korpedo was going to be a valuable penalty killer and he was a pretty smart guy out there on the ice but in his limited time here i do not think he was going to be much better than a role player…..we will miss him on the pk but drury/callahan/dubi/higgins plus maybe boyle will see alot of pk time..with the trade tonight and the way callahan was signed im excited for the rest of the week-somehow someway whether postive or negative sather is bringing in richards or st louis or heatley

  45. If Callahan is averaging 2.3 mil per year, what do you think Dubi would get if he resigns? Something in the 2 million per season range?

  46. Wayne Gretzky said Enver Lisin is the fastest skater he has ever seen i remember hearing that during the season last year.. i loved korpedo but i am excited to see Lisin play for us

I will root for the coyotes next year to improve, i loved dawes & korpedo and didnt mind prucha, think too many rangers fans fell in love with him too much though guys scored alot of garbage goals on rebounds and waht not in front of the net on the PP but i did like him and thought he got a raw deal with renney

I really think we can have 3 really solid lines even if we dont make another move, and especially if Zherdev gets signed
    Depth Chart:

Thats 14 forwards, starting to think Grachev might get another year in Juniors but still depends on his camp and on Zherdev situation bc if you bring him up he has to be a 3rd liner not a 4th liner, no point for a guy liek that to play only 6-7 mins a game if hes on the nhl squad

  47. bull dog line on

it appears that in your scenario, anisimov is gone.
not sure i like that. richards is overpriced, i would stay pat at center.

  48. ZzZz 13 ZzZz Arbitration saga continues... says Greg L. on

Speed and youth …sound like Zherdev does have a spot here on this young dynamic EURO team!!!

Yeah you tell’em Carp!!! We are all Rangers fans and I love you all!!!! well …yes , and if I spat with a few ..nothing personal!!!

Speed , youth and Torts…It’s gonna be a hell of a year!!!!May have to order a few extra bulbs for that goal light next year!!!!

  49. agree with bull dog line, keep the 4 center as 1 dubi 2 drury 3 anisimov 4 arnason and see what happens, seeing anisimov and grachev on that 3rd line this year would be awesome to see, we need some youth besides dubi/cally up front

  50. anyone think Sather can whisk Patrick Sharp away from the Hawks becuase of there terrible cap situation or Marleau away from the Sharks? I would much rather see one of those 2 than Richards or St. Louis.

  51. The moral decline of America continues, why should this blog be different. It is sad, I see the decline in morals in my life and I am not alone. America is decaying from within, and we are to proud and so full of it to change.
Now that I got that off my chest, the rest of the world is in tow, so where to go?

  52. lets all hug it out with a big

LETS GO RANGERS (music to my ears)

  53. bull dog-

if they don’t get a top center then anissimov is probably penciled as 3rd line center with dubi first line. just hard to see sather willing to go into the season not giving his gaborik investment the best chance of success with an established center. i’d like to see dubi get the shot but i don’t see sather doing it. anissimov could also get his shot centering 4th line with boyle on left and brash on right.

  54. Swiz- Sharp would be more than ideal- The 2.3 cap hit for Cally may make it tough to bring back Z at what he will ask for-

  55. taries, great point. very sad, very true.

I’d like to think we’re better than that here, though.

RobM, don’t get too nuts about Arnason the Wolfpacker.

  56. ZzZz 13 ZzZz Arbitration saga continues... says Greg L. on

Taries said:”The moral decline of America continues, why should this blog be different.”

Why you ask? Should this blog be different? Cuz it is different!!! It’s not just American too. Russians and Canadians are on here regularly so we get a kinda worldly look over here. American as you say is in decline but this blog is world wide buddy and it’s as strong as ever with Carp , Jane and journalist Laurel running the show. Cheer up buddy …psttt The Rangers are comming!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. ZzZz 13 ZzZz Arbitration saga continues... says Greg L. on

Your a Ranger fan right Taries? Then yer ahead of the game (wink wink)

  58. bull dog line on

it really depends on the price you pay for the top center. i would be willing to give up more to get marleau, than trade for richards. and if dubi not in the trade, you can move him to wing, and still have room for anisimov.

  59. Doodie machetto on

    Carp, you’re a $%&@!.

Korpikoski being traded means we officially got nothing in return for Brian leetch.

    Sather really is a $%&@!ing $%&@!.

  60. I don’t know if a couple of idiots fighting on blog is really evidence of the moral decline of America-

  61. Rob M

I heard that gretzky quote as well. Gretz said that he doesn’t think there’s a faster skater in the world.

  62. The Rangers now have 3.5 mil in cap space so Zherdev is completely out of the question unless more space (at least 1 mil) is freed up.

play Lisin opposite Gaborik. That would be something to watch…

  63. Noonan- in terms of the arbitration years?

Cally would stil lhave been restricted next year- so that year costs less- if we bought out some of his unrestricted years, it costs more- thus bringing the overall value of the deal up, and the way the nhl works with the average salary counting against each year of the cap the rangers probably didn’t want to bite off more than they could chew for this year/next years cap hit-

  64. Hey guys, just watched Lisin’s highlights. Pretty pleased with his burst and he seems to like to go right towards the net. I think pretty fair. Korpi hadn’t shown me much, and Torts must have felt similarly. Any word on whether he is wing or center?

Also, I’m here every day for hockey, not ignorant squabbling, so thank you Carp. Much appreciated.

  65. I loved Korpikoski. He was my favorite Ranger. I’m sad to see him go, but it looks like this guy could be the real deal. We’ll see.

  66. Dr. Ogrodnick on

I have the Rangers with 6.6 mil in cap space, and that is counting Boyle, Gilroy, and Voros.

  67. Im still not that impressed with this team. Kotalik wont help Dreary, he’ll have another garbage year not owning up to his contract, and Kotalik will be be boo’d every now and then. Lisin is a 3rd liner, so we cant expect him to be the one we count on. Gabby cant do it alone, or this will be 05-06 all over again. Superstar winger having a good year, but has nobody to back him up. Cally, and Dubi are really gonna have to step it up this season.

Something needs to be done. Id really like to see Artie, or Grachev make the team, but it doesn’t seem like it’s gonna happen, since most of these spots are getting taken. Unless Slats doesn’t try to acquire a #1 center, and Artie becomes the 3rd line center, or either Higgins centers the 3rd line, and Grachev can fill the spot on wing.

Like i said, id much rather have Z under contract. At least he has some creativity, and can possibly have nice chemistry with Gabby.

We need more trades, damn it !!!

  68. I’m right at Ogrodnick’s number-

Also think we are really jumping the gun- they are highlights for a reason- remember Zherdev’s highlights last year- let’s check out this kids lowlights and then see where we net out-

  69. Fly Line

    Marian Gaborik — $7,500,000
    Chris Drury — $7,050,000
    Ales Kotalik — $3,000,000
    Ryan Callahan — $2,300,000
    Chris Higgins — $2,250,000
    Sean Avery — $1,937,500
    Donald Brashear — $1,400,000
    Artem Anisimov — $821,666
    * Dane Byers — $750,000
    Tyler Arnason — $700,000
    Brian Boyle — $525,000
    Wade Redden — $6,500,000
    Michal Rozsival — $5,000,000
    Matt Gilroy — $1,750,000
    Daniel Girardi — $1,550,000
    Ilkka Heikkinen — $875,000
    Bobby Sanguinetti — $855,000
    Marc Staal — $826,666
    Henrik Lundqvist — $6,875,000
    Steve Valiquette — $725,000
    SALARY CAP $56,800,000
    PAYROLL $53,190,832
    BONUSES $0
    CAP SPACE $3,609,168

  70. Dr. Ogrodnik

did you forget Callahan??? what about the healthy scratches???

i have designated Heikkinen and Boyle as my healthy scrathes

  71. I am hearing the Sharks love this kid Lisin and a bigger trade is coming, probably by tomorrow.

  72. Not all of those players will count against the cap- they will most likely only dress 20- 12 forwards 6 d and 2 goalies…similar to last year-

  73. Dr. Ogrodnick on

You are making a lot of assumptions about the roster. If they get up to 20 players and still have 3.6 in cap space, they are in pretty good shape.

  74. Fly Line

healthy scratches count against the cap too…you always have at least 1 healthy scratch on hand in case someone is injured during warmups plus extra cap room in case a player needs to be called up in an emergency…

most teams use a 22 man roster although the Rangers got away with 21 for most of the second half however the cap room was always there in case of an emergency callup…

  75. Dr. Ogrodnick

3.6 million and that is without Dubinsky or Lisin signed. Those two will cost at least 2.5 mil between the two of them…

  76. Dr. Ogrodnick on

That would be fine, as the Rangers would then have 13 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 2 goalies while still having 1 mil in cap space. At least going by your roster.

  77. If Gretzky is so impressed with Lisin, why let him go for Korpedo? I think the “new NHL” is all about speed, so that’s good, but what’s wrong with this kid that they shopped him?

  78. wtf mike in la. if the rangers move rozi or redden the cap space will open enough for resigning z dub lisin n a cheap replacement d

  79. Dr. Ogrodnick

that 2.5 mil is at the very least. I would say Dubi gets 1.75 and Lisin gets a little over 1 mil. either way that leaves no money to acquire anyone better than we already have…

  80. Just agut feeling ,but I think Dubi is gonna be involved in a bigger trade if and when it comes(and it will)I’ve been says over the past 2-3 weeks with all the singing lately.
Oh ya it WILL be a center.

  81. ORR-

I absolutely agree. This team doesn’t impress me either. I’m not even excited about this season. Usually by now I’m getting the itch to watch hockey, but maybe this year I’ll start watching some more Coyotes games

  82. Dr. Ogrodnick on

Dubi has no leverage if nobody gives him an offer sheet. Without one he might have to sign for his qualifying offer.

  83. It’s very very close- If we had the 1.8 million number that was originally thought to be the case then it would make it much easier-

    we’ll see what happens-

Have you seen anywhere that was 100% reported that Z was asking for 4 million? He’s obviously asking for more than 3.25, however the only real quotes I ahve seen are from his agent who says Sather won’t talk to him which forced them to go the arbitration route-

  84. Ogrodnick- get ready to get pounded…I said that Dubi had no leverage before and could be forced to play out the year for the QO and got hammered-

  85. Dubi does have leverage. His agent can get on the phone and tell the other teams that his client has not received an offer from the Rangers.

He’d have an offer sheet in 24 hours…

  86. Where's Pavelich? on

    Thanks, Carp.

We are def running short on salary cap with Cally signing for that much and Lisin needed to be paid more that Korpi.. pretty much takes Morris out of the mix (that’s okay).. it would have been nice to get Keith Yandle from PHX for one of our lower tier D prospects (whoever that is)

  87. Fly Line

even if Zherdev were to accept the qualifying offer right now we cannot afford to sign him and Dubinsky unless more salary is taken off.

I dont know why you can’t understand this simple fact…

now is Sather trying to trade Rozsival or Redden to fit Zherdev in who knows. I doubt it very much but even so until someone is moved, Zherdev is not coming back…

  88. Im looking forward to the Women’s U.S. Open than Rangers hockey, sad to say.

Im still looking forward to the season, but if this is supposed to be a Cup contending team, then someone is stuffing Slats’ cigars with LSD.

  89. Dr. Ogrodnick on

A team would have to be willing to out price the Rangers for Dubinsky and his career high 14 goals. I also believe that since Dubinsky’s rights belong to the Rangers, Dubinsky’s agent would need the Rangers permission before he starts talking to other teams.

  90. Where's Pavelich? on

dennis – thnxs for posting – a couple of those goals (esp the one against detroit) were pretty nice, of course it was a “highlight” reel!

  91. Dr. Ogrodnick

but see if Dubinsky’s agent gets a team to offer let’s say 1.6 mil for 2 years and the Rangers match the offer sheet, Dubinsky’s agent just made Dubi an extra million dollars.

  92. What ever trade it is I hope it is small please no Richards, no Marleau, no Heatly, no Savard. If you think the Rangers are going to contend for the cup this year you are nuts, but it is a step in the right direction we need to build a team for the future, everybody bashes Sather for all these bad contracts but it is all the Fans fault for always wanting to win now build a team let them grow and eventually when the pieces are in place make that 1 big move that can help you win the cup probably about 2-3 years away when Drury, and Rozy are off the cap.

  93. Carp,

I have a request tonight would you please not go to sleep until you can confirm for me that the rangers are going to sign gauthier (or someone of his hard hitting ilk)!!

    Thanks and happy researching!!!

  94. I love Cally at least as much as the next guy, but that is just way too much money in a salary cap world. Sather continues to completely fumble the free agent ball. Too much for Kotalik by about 300-500k, at least 500k too much for Cally etc. Add it up, and thats a couple million in cap dollars wasted, just in the past week. Never mind the disasters of the more distant past. If you’re going to give Cally $2+mm, you have to lock him up for 3 years, not just 2.

  95. Oleo- do you know how many players have been signed to offer sheets in the last 5 years?

  96. Dr. Ogrodnick on

But why would a team do that? The Rangers would obviously match. Teams know that the Rangers have 6.6 in uncommitted cap space. So what is the magic #? Is it 2 mil? 3 Mil? higher? As much as a team might want Dubinsky, you can bet that they don’t want to pay 3 mil per for a player who scored 13 goals last season.

  97. I just remembered that Brashear is on the Rangers and I threw up in my mouth a little.

  98. ZzZz 13 ZzZz Arbitration saga continues... says Greg L. on

any woman sport is worth watching , even those diva’s in the WWE!!!

  99. I watch a load of Phoenix during the season, and this kid Lisin is good, real good. Way better than the Korpedo, we made out like bandits on this deal. He’s young, faster than all Hell, and is still improving. If a bigger trade is coming, it better be a good one, because this kid is worth hanging on to.

The problem we’d have with him is where to place him. He’s not good enough yet to play 1st line. Maybe in time, but not now. But he can’t play 2nd line because Drury can’t keep up with him. Would have to slide in at the 3rd line wing centered by Anisimov

  100. Fly Line

thats b/c players of that caliber get treated fairly by their clubs and are given proper contracts. The offer sheet is designed so these RFAs dont stay at entry level contracts until age 27…

Sure Dubinsky is no superstar but he’s had two 40+ point seasons to start his career and is only improving from here on. To not offer him a raise would be insulting at the very least…

  101. Hey guys,

I’m coming to NY on Wednesday and I was wondering what’s the best night club in the city… thoughts?

  102. Dr. Ogrodnick

where do you keep getting 6.6 mil from???

I just showed you that the Rangers have between 3.5 and 4 mil (depending on which 4th liners and 6th defenseman make the team)

  103. A raise is one thing- above 1.5-1.7 million- i just don’t see the basis for that happening-

as I said before, just don’t think Dubi has much leverage in the situation- but similar to this Cally deal, Glen will prob overpay-

  104. Dr. Ogrodnick on

6.6 mil is how much is left over after you add up all the contracts of probable rangers. Granted, its only 16 players, but the end result is the same. They have enough to sign Lisin and Dubinsky, while rounding out the roster with some kids.

  105. well you have 5-6 guys left to fill that 6.6 million.

    Dubi: 1.75
    Lisin: 1
    someone: 750 K
    someone: 750 K
    someone: 750 K

thats 5 million right there (and those are very low figures) for those 5 guys and with one roster spot left you have 1.6 million

who can we get for 1.6 million that is that much better than what we have now that we should spend it now instead of waiting for the deadline???

  106. Fly Line

that is what the RFAs get. look at the other RFAs with similar numbers and you will see the same salaries…

  107. 2.3 mill a season for Cally is a bit high IMO

I had him at 1.75 – 2.0 million, and i think that Dubinsky WILL GET THE SAME EXACT CONTRACT. The Rangers arent gonna “play favorites” between the two players.

Interesting (AND LAME) side note …

About a month and a half ago on my NHL 09 game i traded Korpi and Sjostrom to PHX for Lisin and Prust

Just though it was a weird coincidence??

This trade was nothing more then Maloney courting more of his past draftees, and 2 rumored players possibly bound for the KHL to get a fresh start on another team … I DONT think this sets up Lisin for a biiger trade.

Rozsival and his 5 million are gonna be traded, and we will replace him with a “Derek Morris type veteran guy” to fill his spot for cheaper (like 2 million)

  108. I don’t have time right now to do the research, but I doubt heavily that too many guys who score 14 goals in the year before their first year of restricted free agency get on average 1.7-2 million

We love Dubi for his grit, heart etc- unfortunately those intangibles are not rewarded too often in restricted free agency/arbitration-

  109. Somerset – Yup, in my mind, I had Dubi and Cally getting the same contract as well. If that still holds, man are we gonna be Cap Choked. Roughly $1mm in Cap Space wasted just between those 2 guys. That should be about the value of Lisin’s contract. I like that trade alot, BTW – never was impressed by Korpi’s hands, and Lisin is even faster. If he can approach Korpi’s work ethic, and continue to develop – pretty nice!

  110. Damn… it took me 28 minutes to sift through all this… my brain is toast!

    Here’s to antiblogging abuse!

  111. Steve Bernier 13 goals 10 assists gets 2.0 mil
Louis Erickson 14 goals 17 assists gets 1.7 mil
Alexander Steen 15 goals 28 assists gets 1.7 mil
David Backes 13 goals 18 assists gets 2.5 mil
Mikhail Grabovski 20 goals 28 assists 2.9 mil

Brandon Dubinsky 13 goals 28 assists

you still think Dubinsky isn’t getting at least 1.5 mil???

  112. my rough estimates …

    Gabby – 7.5
    Drury – 7.05
    Kotalik – 3.0
    Cally – 2.3
    Dubi – 2.3 —— ESTIMATE
    Higgins – 2.25
    Avery – 1.94
    Lisin – 1.4 —– ESTIMATE (made 900k last year)
    Brash – 1.4
    Anismov – 822k
    Arnason – 750k
    Byers – 750k
    Boyle – 550k
    *OFFENSE TOTAL – 32.012*

    Redden – 6.5
    Rozy – 5.0
    Gilroy – 1.75
    Girardi – 1.55
    Sangs – 855k
    Sauer – 847k
    Staal – 827k
    *DEFENSE TOTAL – 17.329*

    Hank – 6.88
    Vally – 725k
    *GOALIE TOTAL – 7.605*

    *GRAND TOTAL – 56.946 (22 man roster)*

Rozsival has to be traded !!!!!

  113. somerset

1.4 for Lisin and 2.3 for Dubi are both rather high

change that to 1.25 and 2.2 and it fits…

  114. oleo …

Thats still TOO close to the cap and i really dont want to play this season with 3 rookies on Defense.

Id like to see Rozy traded and 2 cheaper Veteran D-men brought in his place.

Then we can have 2 rookie forwards (my guess is AA and Byers), and 2 rookie D-men (my guess is Gilroy and Sangs)

I dont think the Rangers will rush Grachev and MDZ into the lineup this year

  115. somerset

well the Rangers are not winning anything this season so why not play as many rookies as you can. I mean is getting a 4 seed instead of a 7 seed that important to you???

plus you only play 6 d-men at a time so thats only 2 d-men at a time, plus all 3 wont be up there at the same time, a journeyman like Fahey or someone they bring in will be the 7th d-man

  116. maybe Maloney feels that all these kids he drafted and got from the Rangers are future lottery winners who will be able to bailout the Coyotes financially

  117. oleo …

I think we are a playoff team, and as long as we are a playoff team we can win it all … stranger things have happened and its all a matter of team chemistry and the right players getting “hot” at the right times.

No matter what your seed # is … if you make the playoffs you can win the Cup, but I dont think you make the playoffs with too many rookies on your roster all at the same time

  118. somerset

so you are telling me that Derek Morris and some other veteran D-man will do that much of a better job than Rozsival and let’s say Sanguinetti that that one move is going to put us over the top and make us stanley cup contenders???

  119. oleo …

Take the whole “Cup Contending” scenario out of the argument because it is impossible to tell how good a team is gonna be in July but YES

I think the Rangers are stronger “playoff bound” team next season with say:

Morris (2 mill), MA Bergeron (2 mill), Gilroy (1.75), and Sangs (855k)

Rozsival (5 mill), Gilroy (1.75), Sangs (855k), and Sauer (847k)

  120. apparently Gretzky said this about Lisin: “if there’s a faster skater in the nhl, i dont know who it is.” If this is true he would be a good fit in the Torts system, I like the trade. I think hes got more potential than Korp does, watch some of his goal highlights and hes got some nice dangles. Hope hes not another Z and has a shitty attitude…

  121. Sangs is going to be a bust will not make this team and probablly never will play full time for the Rangers just my opinion I think it will be Gilroy and Heineken that will be with this team this year with Redden, Rozy, Staal, and Girardi with sauer being the 7th d-man and if it does not work out Sather will send a highly touted prospect for a veteran d man.

  122. hello all back from the honeymoon landed and arrived home around 11 and just had first chance to hear your take on tonight.

i think cally at 2.3 rather high was hoping 2 max. dubi i think will get packaged in bigger deal

as of now this team on paper doenst impress me.

korpi for lisin could go either way.

we need a number 1 center asap

  123. Hope the honeymoon was nice. I went to Manhattan for my honeymoon… I think that you’re right and wrong in saying that the team on paper is not impressive. I think it’s a risky team. We’ll either be very happy or very sad at the end of this next season.

  124. Guys and gals, remember one thing. You pay your own guys good money which is why I’m cool with the Cally deal. He’s earned it with his hard work and he’ll be RFA again.

    Lissin looks good.

I keep putting his name out there but Jordan Owens is very fast and makes nothing so he could be a 4th line/PK option.

  125. No Country For Old Rangers on

i’m not shedding any tears over korpedo

torts wasnt kidding about the overhaul

i think it’s beautiful, this team needs it.

assuming they are on the team, i’m giving drury and redden a clean slate for next season. if those guys can get it together we might be a pretty solid team

    i hate baseball

  126. Gutted to lose Korpedo, but Lisin sounds like da bomb (if we keep him and don’t trade him and Roszi for Marleau)!
Slats should have been looking to keep Cally’s contract below $2m, mainly because it will impact Dubi’s deal too, but hey Slats has never been very good at negotiating against himself.

  127. Uk Ranger the Dubi, and Rozy for Marlaeu would be about equall under the cap rozy 5mill Dubi assume 1.5mill Marlaeu makes 6.5 mill but then we would still have to fit a defensmen under the cap so it would have to be a youngster. I dont see SJ doing this deal Marleau comes of the cap next season and rozy has 2 more left.

  128. I hate the trade. It’s just another example of how impatient this franchise is. When do they ever practice what they preach? Korp had good speed and instincts. He got screwed over. And for what? Another Russian enigma who will wind up overseas anyway. Slats panicked.

He also managed to foul up the Callahan deal only giving him two years. May as well have made it more affordable. What happens when Cally turns RFA again and boosts his price? Slats is a fool.

And the shame of it is we’re stuck with him thanks to that idiot Dolan. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks axe Tallon for his idiocy even though he had a much better track record. Probably overreaction. I’d kill to have a management who really cared.

  129. ZzZz 13 ZzZz Arbitration saga continues... says Greg L. on

Korpi was good but lisen is speedy. Speed wins , sorry.

  130. bull dog line on

all seem to making the assumption that Boyle is a 4th liner or healthy scratch. Sather did not give up a 3rd rounder for him to sit, or play in the AHL. He is going to be on this team, and play. 31 goals in the AHL last year, and 6 ft 7 250 lbs. he is going to play.

  131. As I have been saying for 3 weeks now, Brad Richards will be the #1 Center for your NEW YORK RANGERS!!!!!

  132. onecupin69years and counting on

Sather really wanted Linzer tart but settled for an enver Lisin , I hope sather get an Embolism in the end.

  133. First, Carp you do a great job. I very rarely post and often avoid the comments because they can be ridiculous but I wanted to make sure I said thank you and keep up the good work, This thread shows there are a lot of readers like me that appreciate your work even if they don’t think so highly of some oof the riff raff that posts here.

Second, on the Korpikoski trade: You can’t keep every prospect and while I think Korpi has more upside than he showed last year his ceiling is limited in comparison to other first round picks. But you can’t kill the Rangers for not having patience or letting the kids play. They have put a ton in the lineup over the last 4 years after the lockout and they really haven’t moved any homegrown player that has shown tremendous upside or consistancy since the lockout. Callahan, Lundqvist, Dubinsky, Girardi, Staal, Sanguinetti, Del Zotto, Grachev, Sauer, Anisimov ect are all still here. And this summer its not like they have only gotten back aging vets. Linsin is another young kid who may be a better fit with the new staff and McDonaugh (sp?) Is apparently another elite prospect that they have picked up in trades.

  134. I’d have sacked Tallon anyway – just for giving that contract to Brian Campbell who is effectively their #3/#4 d-man now and for letting Havlat go for $5m per and signing Hossa for 12 years!! Also, he was also the only GM in the league spending $12m+ on 2 goaltenders last year and you thought Slats cap management was bad!!

As for Korpedo, he was fast too, versatile and probably needed another year of development to establish where he fits in. This Lisin kid looks like he is an out and out scorer and he is very fast, he may provide good scoring depth on the 3rd line with AA and can play either wing apparently.

  135. cwgatti

and once again i will tell you that the Rangers cannot afford Brad Richards so the only Rangers team he will be centering is in your video game…

  136. According to beyondtheblueshirts both Korpedo and Lisin have offers on the table from the KHL and the GM’s think they may not be able to sign them so they are swapping “problem children”. I guess Maloney has some sort of affinity with Korpi having drafted him and thinks he might be able to convince him to stay – that and Gretzky may not like Lisin as he benched him for poor defensive play on more than one occasion, something that won’t be too much of an issue with Korpi.

  137. UkRanger

the reason Lisin was moved is that he was a healthy scratch for at least 20 games last season and he doesn’t want to go back.

If the Rangers plan to play Lisin on the top 3 lines every game than there is no reason why he wouldn’t come back…

  138. i will miss Korpedo but he waned too much money for a kid that has one year of XP. i thought he would be another Jan Erixon in a few seasons and was going to replace betts or Sjo on the PK this year. I bet he gets 15 goals next year in Pheonix if he signs there. Lisin is a good swap though. different players but an even deal in my opinion

  139. tyree- its just another step in the right direction(albeit small step) to get more offense on the team and balancing out the 4 lines. we may have 1 superstar, but we have a lot of good offensive players who will all help in the scoring dept. i just wish we had 1 more elite forward and redden gone. if sather can trade rozy and picks for sharp wed be in good shape. but at least we have more balanced offense throughout the lineup. just gotta hope all these new guys and 2nd year players pul their weight and duby and cally gotta have 20-25g seasons and dru has to have high 20’s -30 in goals. gabby cant carry a team like jagr can.

  140. everybody has got to understand that torts is in sather’s ear telling him what type of player he wants and who fits into his system best. i like korpi but torts must have another opinion and he obviously was not putting up offensive numbers. plus, he was due to get a raise somewhere around 1.5 million.

if you look at the moves made this summer, the players who has been brought in are aggressive, bigger and are faster. thats torts’ system. renney is not coaching this team any more. its a new philosophy and everyone’s personal attachment to some of these players are clouding their opinion of the moves made.

  141. Jeff S. from Delaware on

Mind letting us all know where you read that the Rangers plan to play Lisin on their top three lines next season? I don’t necessarily disagree, but how can you know that for certainty?
