  1. Wow, what a d-bag. Thank God the rangers didn;t go out and get him. Now which center are we trading for?

You know they’re stockpiling defense prospects for a reason. Right now the Rangers have 3 1st round defense draftees (sangs, DZ, new kid) plus Gilroy who also would have been a #1 this year. Tampa’s defense was miserable last year. They could use Rozival, Zherdev, a good d prospec and a pick. For, say, Vinnie. Then Sather will sign Komisarek and we’re done.

  2. Wow! Sens owners must HATE Danny boy now. And to boot, the players from Edmonton were told they were being traded and now they are staying. That must be one hell of a confidence booster for those guys, ha. Man, what is going to happen next?

I just wonder where our focus is now? Are we going to go after a legit first line center (V L) or a scoring winger with no solid center to set him up?

Who knows what ol’ Glen has up his sleeve. I guess we will find out soon enough.

    Goodnight all.

  3. Remember everyone 2pm tomorrow on the NHL network 4 hours of free agent signings.

  4. TSN and RDS in canada both say Heatley killed the deal.

Wow – can’t say I blame him though – I would think Edmonton would be a defense-first team with Renney hired as an assistant.

  5. WOW !!! Heatley is a jerk-*** !!! haha

In his defense though he apparently blocked a trade to Edmonton a couple of days ago, and the Sens were foolish to keep trying to work a trade out with them all the way up until the zero hour

Heatley will be a Ranger next season (if he moves at all) …. This just proved it

  6. Dr. Ogrodnick on

Well, if he already blocked a trade with Edmonton a few days ago, then Murray is an idiot for continuing down that road.

  7. Man, am I GLAD we didn’t get Heatley. His refusal to waive his no-trade clause after demanding a trade and forcing Murray to bust his ass to try and get a deal done quickly…What a total and complete assclown.

Selfish isn’t the word when it comes to Heatley. I’m glad we didn’t go for him. Sure says alot about his character, as in he has none.

Okay…nitty gritty tomorrow. I’m curious to see what’s gonna happen.

    Good night all!

  8. I dont see how the price for Heatley goes up here. You think management or the coaching staff wants Heatley to show up in the locker room? If anything, I think what OTT can command in trade value goes DOWN from here. No team takes sympathy that they had to pay 4 million. Everyone knows Heatley wont show up to training camp and the coaching staff, as young as they are, cannot afford to lose face by having a star undermine them. OTT is #$%$#% completely in my opinion..trade value goes DOWN not UP, there are no other options for them

  9. i was really hoping heatley would go to deadminton.. now i have to sleep and get nightmares Sather will do something stupid that involves THE TALENT

  10. Dr. Ogrodnick…you make a very good point. I guess considering that you’d have to think Murray wasn’t too bright to keep trying with the Oilers.

Either way, when you’re crying in your soup that you want out of town…you should go where they trade ya. And he couldn’t deal with the press before? How are the Sens fans gonna react to him next season??

  11. Oh and the price for Heatley did not go up! Teams now know Heatley makes the deal and not the Senators. The Senators lost their leverage.

  12. Very Important From Bob McKenzie:

“A lot of confusion has existed because there is a $4 million bonus payment due to Heatley on July 1. It was the understanding of many involved, including the Senators and Oilers, that once the clock struck midnight and turned over to July 1, the Sens would be on the hook for the $4 million bonus payment, which may have been a serious impediment to getting a deal done after midnight.

But as it turns out, the NHL says as long as a Heatley trade is concluded before midnight eastern tomorrow night, the bonus payment allocation can be transferred to the new team.”

  13. I’m going to give Heatley the benefit of doubt.

When he resigned with Ottawa, they may have made promises about improving the team, etc.

If management then gets rid of good players and doesn’t actively pursue FAs, then changes coaches on you, how is that his fault? He negotiated the no-trade clause and Ottawa accepted that. He’s simply exercising his right.

If he were to sit out the season (ala Yashin), would Ottawa be on the hook for his salary? Would the league give them a cap credit?

Someone else mentioned that Heatley already told Murray he wasn’t going to accept a trade to Edmonton earlier in the week. That’s just dumb of Murray to continue to pursue that avenue as a landing spot for Heatley.

  14. That is absolutely correct …. If you thought there was no way Ottawa could play Heatley next season after making trade demands …. How the hell is Ottawa gonna be able to bring Heatley back into the locker room now??

Heatley’s price just went down a few more notches.

Who cares about the 4 million dollars?? Ottawa can afford it

  15. lmao! this is just too funny! how stupid are they to continue trying to trade him to a team he had already put the kibosh on earlier? what kind of rocket scientists are running the sens? I swear I hope we don’t wind up with him now…he just seems like bad ju ju now!

  16. MikeA: Good post. Certainly Sather has an extreme amount of leverage now to make a deal, since it was a two team race to begin with, and now it’s a one team race as far as we all know.

  17. A lot of confusion has existed because there is a $4 million bonus payment due to Heatley on July 1. It was the understanding of many involved, including the Senators and Oilers, that once the clock struck midnight and turned over to July 1, the Sens would be on the hook for the $4 million bonus payment, which may have been a serious impediment to getting a deal done after midnight.

But as it turns out, the NHL says as long as a Heatley trade is concluded before midnight eastern tomorrow night, the bonus payment allocation can be transferred to the new team.

So, in effect, the Senators have another 24 hours to find a suitable deal that Heatley will approve and NOT be on the hook for his $4 million signing bonus.

  18. This is worse than Sundin... on

Now Ottawa has another 24 hours to deal him w/o being responsible for his bonus?

Does this mean that he only wants to come to us?

  19. Dr. Ogrodnick on

According to Mckenzie at TSN, if a deal is concluded before the end of Day July 1st, or within another 24 hours, the bonus can be transfered.

    http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/bob_mckenzie/?id=283382

“But as it turns out, the NHL says as long as a Heatley trade is concluded before midnight eastern tomorrow night, the bonus payment allocation can be transferred to the new team.

So, in effect, the Senators have another 24 hours to find a suitable deal that Heatley will approve and NOT be on the hook for his $4 million signing bonus.”

    Slats, go fleece Murray.

  20. If the 4 million can be delayed until tomorrow at midnight, and Sather now knows that Heatley wont go to EDM, he better drop his offer lower

OTT has no other options. We should be in PRIME position now to package Rozi, a prospect, and a pick for Heatley. No need to give up Dubi or Cally or Staal now that its a one horse race

  21. The way Heatley has handled this trade, pretty much EVERY TEAM will be out of the running for him.

Sather can now go to Murray with a mask and a gun a rob him blind ….. way to go Slats, committing “highway robbery” must be fun

  22. Expect Phil Kessel tomorrow guys. Once we resign Callahan and the boys, Sather will probably realize that Heatley is too much trouble and offer Kessel the 6 million he wants.

    Or in *Sathers world*

    We Sign Hossa
    We Sign Komisarek
    We Get Heatley for nothing
    We Sign Kessel
    and everyone else resigns.

  23. anybody think with the revamping of the 4th line … John Madden is heading to NY ???

  24. nice try ottowa ;)

they probably were asking for ridiculous offers from every team, just testing their limits. now they and everyone else know they are going to have to deal with this whiner or deal him.

  25. Maybe we will be able to deal Rozival tomorrow, which would be good for us.

We’d instantly become more mobile on D, and it seems we have a glut of young talent on the blue line. No to mention the salary going back.

Heck, I’d make the deal Rozi and a pick or a prospect for Heatley at this point. If they don’t take it, you pursue one of the UFAs available.

I’m not so high on Kessel… I dont think he’s worth 6 million a year, and we may need some of that cap money in case someone signs Callahan or Dubinsky to an offer sheet.

  26. Why does anyone even look at sportsnet..its like looking at Eklund….they said it was done too…seriously they are useless

  27. Maybe it’s a three way deal – Edmonton trades with Ottawa to get Heatley, and the Sather calls his Edmonton buddies up and trades for Heatley giving up Rozi (or Redden?) and prospects?

  28. “Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun says in his blog that the Heatley-to-Edmonton deal has been killed by Heatley”

Thats not the only thing that’s been killed by Heatley

Im sorry but i couldnt pass up the joke…

  29. Rangers could get Heatly, and still sign Kessel or Gaborik if they trade Rozsival and still have a decent buffer of cap space.

  30. July 1st, 2009 at 1:05 am

get this. Murray said that Dubinsky and Rosival were not enough. so the Rangers are supposedly going after Hossa or Havlat tomorrow.
    —————————————
    from the Ott Sun

“the Rangers and San Jose Sharks were both in on the bidding, but they had concerns about the $4-million bonus.

The Rangers cleared money by sending Scott Gomez to Montreal for Chris Higgins yesterday. Sources say the Rangers may have been willing to offer centre Brandon Dubinsky and defenceman Michal Roszival. The Senators said the offer wasn’t enough. The Rangers may pursue Marian Hossa or Martin Havlat as free agents today.

The indications are the Sharks were ready to move winger Jonathan Cheechoo and defenceman Christian Erhoff to the Senators.

  31. if the rangers trade away brandon dubinsky ill will pull a dany heatley and kill somebody, namely glen sather

  32. i dont want hossa either.. get cammalieri

now ill wait about 4 mins until someone says hes too small

  33. screw Murray. don’t give him any young Ranger key players. I would be happy to watch the kids play and give AA and Grachev ice time than watch the same ol’ merry go round of big contract bigname washouts in blue.

  34. I want Hossa..you know why? Because then we’ll get to the Stanley Cup Finals, lose then get rid of him and we’ll win the Cup!

  35. scratch that.. sign sedins for 5.5 each.. cleared 7.3 from gomez, if u get rid of rozi we have enough for those 2 monsters that would b siiiick

  36. its a stretch but i heard thats what the twins are askin for so if its true do that if they r down to come to NY

  37. Dont want the Sedins. If one goes down, the other one will be pissed if we get rid of his brother.

  38. “I’m not so high on Kessel… I dont think he’s worth 6 million a year, and we may need some of that cap money in case someone signs Callahan or Dubinsky to an offer sheet.”

He’s not worth $5million in an inflated market with no cap room.

  39. that same OTT Sun article says that Heatley and his agent wanted to play for NYR

    ———————————————–

“Sources say Heatley, along with agents J.P. Barry and Stacey McAlpine, weren’t happy with the Edmonton trade and were trying to broker a deal with the New York Rangers.”

    —————————————-

so, we have not heard the end of this crap.

  40. I would take Ehrhoff in a trade from San Jose way before signing Mike Komisarek,,,,,,get it done Slats!

  41. if one goes down? we woudlnt get rid of one of them just because they got hurt.. those 2 guys are the 2 best free agents out there much rather have even just one of them instead of hossa but i know they are a package.. they have the best chemistry in the league, they have played together since they were 3

  42. Chris from Buffalo on

Why not go after Jaroslav Spacek? He was the Sabres best defenseman last year. He had 8 goals, 37 assists, which is more than any other D-man on the Rangers. 4 of his goals came on the powerplay. And he only had a cap hit of 3.3 mil last year.

  43. why does everyone want these spaceks and komisareks and what not? we have a great crop of young d-men and bet on at least one of them making the team this year.. if anything trade rozi and try to get a crease clearing d-man such as a hal gill or someone who will be pretty damn cheap

  44. and i dont even want to give rozi up i think he is solid, just woudl be nice to clear that money of his.. he gets underappreciated very often by most of you

  45. Is he going to pull an Oiler’s jersey over his head or not?

Dany Heatley has not completely squashed a trade to Edmonton as first reported.

According to his agent, J.P Barry, who spoke to Sportsnet.ca, “Dany is going to sleep on it.”

Edmonton is offering Andrew Cogliano, Dustin Penner and Ladislav Smid for the star forward. The trade was agreed to by the Senators and the Oilers and all that is left, is for Heatley to waive his no trade clause. (jc, mp)

  46. that is the only page like it on the feed i have here
everything else says the deal is dead.

  47. We’ve not heard th end of this – it will drag on throughout Wednesday…

  48. The Heatley as killer thing is overdone here, in my opinion. It was a horrible, avoidable tragedy, but a mistake and accident nonetheless. We’ve probably all gotten behind the wheel when we shouldn’t have or sped stupidly or had one moment of stupidity that could have become tragic. There but for the grace if god, I say.

Not to mention none of us know the actual maneuverings or talks that led to heatley rejecting that trade. If Heatley said he didn’t want to go to E and the team hasn’t improved itself, how is he the real a-hole?

  49. this kinda reminds me of sedin
remember how much of a sure thing it was
he was in chillin w/ lundy
    hahahahaha

i would love to wake up tomorrow and see phil kessel in a ranger jersey

    im not bankin on it.
but i am surely excited for tomorrow.

  50. MissionHossa on

Spacek??? Seriously? He sucks something special. Only guy I would want out of Buff is Afinogenov.

I think Uncle Glen goes out and gets Hossa and Cammalieri. That would be a great day!

  51. afinogenov?? u mean the guy that looks like a grey alien from roswell?? yea ok. hes scott gomez without the charm

  52. go get dany boy.

no dubi and cally in deal

PLEASE FOR GODSAKE NO HOSSA DEAL. I HATE HIM. HE IS A BORN LOSER

  53. just remember

when sather does one thing good he takes 2 steps back. any way have a feeling today will be a disaster.

  54. DanTheRangerFan on

OooooHhh Danny Boy the Rangerssss, the Rangerssss are calling Please let it be. Lets make some moves today boys.

  55. onecupin69years and counting on

sign Gustavson and trade hank ,that will clear more cap space and make a better package for a trade.

  56. I don’t mind if Slats splashes the cash today – as long as he’s not signing any more 5+ year overpriced contracts. I get the impression he is going to spend our cap space on 2 players: Komisarek being one (or maybe Beauchemin) and then a sniper, although i did see a Brad Richards rumour but i think that was just another one of those “Torts likes him” type rumours.

Bye bye party boy Gomez, hello??

  57. Just when I thought we were out of the Heatly sweepstakes, we’re now the ONLY team in the mix? Ah yes, I love the drama of NHL hockey.

  58. Please, you guys are too much. The top of the thread, everyone is saying…good, glad we didn’t get Heatly, selfish this and that. By the end of the thread, lets get Heatly and give Ottawa our crap. Then, there’s all this about signing Hossa, and all these high priced guys. You wonder why Sather goes out and signs these guys? Because YOU all want them all!! Then when they are a bust, you blame Sather. Let’s take our cap money, sign a bunch of young up and comers rather than the Hossa’s of the world (and Cammilari…off one good year, is going to get a bundle….too risky that he doesn’t repeat). And he’ll go and sign Hossa and whoever and we’ll be in this same cycle next year, having to trade away one of these bad signings for nothing. It’s almost enough to turn me into a Devil’s fan (at least they generally have a plan on what they want to be)…well not quite. Let’s take this year to develop our young guys, see what we have. C’mon, they can’t do much worse than these overpaid clowns are, and even if we suck….we get a lottery pick and a top five kid. THATS the way to build a team.

  59. I don’t understand WHY anyone would trade for a 40 goal scorer when you can just sign Hossa. The market is dead, so I bet Hossa could be had for a fair price and we wouldn’t part with any players.

That said, I am a little baffled by all of the concern about trading Dubi or Cally. Good players, but not great by any means. The two combined do not equal Heatley or Hossa. And soon their salaries will combine to equal that of Hossa or Heatley. I would pack Dubinsky’s bags if he were traded for Heatley.

  60. I would personally not sign anyone now, and wait til the deadline next season and trade for a player that will help down the stretch. Then you can really take advantage of the market.

  61. I turn on ESPN today to get some insight on possible free agency moves..what a laugher. I should know better by now that this blog is the place to hear about all the possibilities. (Carp and the boneheads know all)

ESPN did not even cover hockey today (except for on the bottom line ticker)

  62. I am really sorry. But the “take one year to develope and see what he have” comments dont work here. You either go rebuild and do it right (5 or so years of young up and coming players) or you go for the gold season after season. I pay way TOOOOOOOOOO much in season tickets to be spending thousands a year to go see a mediocure team year in and year out.

This needs to happen, and it needs to happen now. We are in need of three things now.

    1- a top line center
2- a high profile, high powered top line winger
3- a defenseman who can QB the power play.

Lets cut the crap with this oh i want Heatly, or I dont want Heatley crap. We really need Sather to pull through here. If this means to lose a couple of our young guys, to get a well developed high profile guy, I say do it and do it NOW.

Callahans, Dudinskys………..these guys are a dime a douzen and i dont know what all the drama is about trading them. Duby had 1 good year and thats because he played on a line with Jags. Callahan is a good th line guy on most top NHL teams. CASE CLOSED.

  63. little green men on

A trade will be made today! We have too many young quality defenseman(and redden and rozi). Sather will get a stud today (or a dud).

  64. It would be very foolish for Sather not to include Dubi in a deal for Heatley if thats what it takes. Everyone was whining that the Rangers do not have enough scoring and when a player who is capable of putting in 50 is available, you must get him. I like Dubi and all, but the kid has no hands.

  65. “I turn on ESPN today to get some insight on possible free agency moves..what a laugher. I should know better by now that this blog is the place to hear about all the possibilities. (Carp and the boneheads know all)

ESPN cares about two sports only….Football and Basketball, and during the off seasons of those, they STILL talk about it as if it’s big news. Baseball is talked about ONLY because they HAVE to, and hockey? It might as well be badmitten to them. I don’t even watch Baseball Tonight anymore. Why watch them when you have NHL Network for Hockey and MLB Network for Baseball? I used to watch hours of ESPN, now I only put it on if the Yankees are on Sunday Night Baseball.

  66. Swiz- couldnt agree more.

I would be glad to see Duby or Cally go to get a guy like Heatley………..

Attitude or not, he can score. CASE CLOSED!

We arent looking for a Miss America winner here. We need talent and we need scoring.

Sather- if you come accross this BLOG- PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE lets shake up our line-up. The More the better. This team as it stands now, will not make the playoffs next year!!!!

  67. “I am really sorry. But the “take one year to develope and see what he have” comments dont work here. And this is the reason why we ARE mediocre. We keep signing these high profile guys and they are busts. I agree with your first assesment….rebuild. The second way NEVER works until you have a foundation of young stars. While Dubi and Cally are never going to be big stars, perhaps AA or Grachev will? But how will you EVER find out if you keep trading them, or retard their growth by bringing in high priced busts? I’m sure you sat here and drooled at the thought of geting Gomez, Drury and all the high priced guys you thought would put us over the top, and here we are, in worse shape than before. I think that the worst thing that happened to the Rangers was making the playoffs after the lockout. Sather was in full rebuilding mode until then, yet, because of this, he started brining in guys that he THOUGHT would put us in contention, and all it did was retard the growth of this team. Pittsburgh, Wash, Chicago, those should be the models we follow.

  68. Another thing about Heatly…you do realize that both his goal and point totals have gone down each of the last 2 years. That should be a red flag to anyone.

  69. we need 2 superstars to compete with the likes of Pitt or Wash.. I love Cally.. I really really like Duby and Stall.. but if you have to give up one packaged with a bad contract (Rozi, Redden or Drury).. to get a certified superstar.. you have to pull the trigger… 2 superstars.. Hank.. and hopefully a strong defense that develops around some of these young guys.. gives you a shot in the next couple yrs… but you still have to get thru the likes of a Pitt or Wash

  70. its so funny that all of you are bitching about our cap space being eaten up and then say sign all of these free Agents which will cost a minimum of 6 million for the good ones and probably 7 years in length or trade for Heatley (7+mill) or VL(10years at 9-10mill and a NTC) why does everyone keepp wanting to step in the same beartrap?

  71. Steve,

    Go back to bed.

“Sather was in full rebuilding mode until then, yet, because of this, he started brining in guys that he THOUGHT would put us in contention, and all it did was retard the growth of this team.”

Tell me one good thing that came out of that REBUILDING that Sather did. NOTHING (other than Lundqvist) which was complete luck.

When are people like you goign to learn that as long as stupid people like me, keep filling the seats, and as long as Dolan, still owns our team, this team will not go anywhere.

Look at it from a business standpoint- if you are making a ton of money, and your customers keep complaining that you dont ave the new products, but they still keep coming back, why would you change anything.

I think that Sather didnt rebuild, he never did, never intended to, never planned to. It was an excuse used to ease the fans.

Get rid of some youth and bring in some young developed talented high profile guy so at least it gives us a chance.

Oh- and talking about Pitt and Washington……….The league gave Pitt Crosy because they didnt want to losee the franchise. Washington was handed Ovy. We are the Rangers, the biggest NHL market, we dont “need” hand-me-downs, right?

Get off your high horse and realize that it has been 15 years since we had a winning team, already getting pretty close to the 54 year number. Cut the crap and lets go for it, as we are in no way, shape, or form, going to be able to rebuild with Redden, Drury, Rozy, and the other “underacheivers” on this team…………

Sick and tired of hearing that!

  72. If it were me, looking at the free agents, none of them really excite me. I’d bring in someone like Jason Williams, who can probably play with some ice time and won’t kill the cap. I’d bring in Chris Neil to replace Orr, a tough guy who can actually play, unlike Orr. And then, I’d go out and trade from our D* depth (and maybe package in a Rozi) for a good young up and coming forward. Then keep my cap money and go and see how things develop with the kids and if it looks like things are meshing, go out and get some pieces during the season.

  73. onecupin69years and counting on

When are ranger fans going to realize that you CAN’T buy the Cup with Free agents, you can’t.
It’s through good drafting for a foundation then a trade or two.
Sather is trying to buy a cup

  74. And one more point. HEatley is a GOAL SCORER……….

Gomez and Drury, were playmakers. They need people who can put the puck in the net in order to achieve their potential skill level.

Mark my words………..GOMEZ will most likely break his best points season next year, especially if Kovelov signs with Montreal and plays on his line.

So, stating that i was sitting here drooling when i heard those signings is completely true.

But how was I supposed to know we would never habve a valid goal scorer on our team( with the exception of Jags)

  75. So let me get this straight…

…just because some of you guys foolishly give the Dolans all your money for season tickets it means that the team HAS to do the wrong thing and keep throwing good money at over the hill ex-stars and players that won’t fit in NY… just to keep you happy???

    Yeah.. that’s the ticket. Sure.

Well, maybe just this once they’ll do it right, and hold on to the kids until they become home-grown stars in their own right. No more Big Name saviors.

I don’t care if they miss the playoffs a couple of years as long as they are building with the kids and drafting well, because then they will grow together and they will go far beyond their perennial first round playoff exit.

  76. TheMessiah

Thanks for making my point for me.

First of all, Sather never COMMITED to the rebuilding he started right before the lockout (remember him trading away guys like Leetch for draft picks and prospects?) because the year AFTER the lockout we made the playoffs. This gave him a false sense of hope, so he went back to doing the same old crap…the crap you are advocating, buying this and that free agent. All that stuff about Crosby handed to Pittsburgh is nice conspiricay stuff that means nothing. They had the worst record in hockey, the deserved him as did Wash the year before. It takes a few really bad years (and not the years where the Rangers kept buying at the deadline to make the playoffs, barely missing and getting middle draft picks) to really get top guys and rebuild. You might be right, Dolan and Sather will never allow it. But that doesn’t mean they can keep doing what they are, and win. You ticket holders will keep getting finishes from 7-10th in the east standings, maybe win a round or two, and be done, because there’s NO DEPTH. Guys like Cally and Dubi ARE your depth. Any team with a decent D can shut down a top scorer…look at what Hossa did in the finals this year. But if you have 3 lines of depth, it’s impossible. It’s not ME who doesn’t understand it’s YOU. I say to you, would you rather watch an up and coming bad team, knowing the team is building for the future, or a mediocre team with a star or two, knowing this team will be mediocre for the forseeable future?

  77. Cally is a star. his work ethic is unmatched and he is on his way to being a 30 goal may on sheer effort. I love Dubi but he is a bit overrated here. He is a rod Brind’amour/Mike Ricci type. 2nd or 3rd liner in my opinion though I hope he proves me wrong this year. I thought Gratchev was going to be a monster with Gomez after seeing him fly down the ice in juniors. Now we have to hope he meshes with Dubi. Only free agent that I want is Sullivan on a 2 year low price contract

  78. And this one will last a lifetime on

The Rangers should completely forget Heatley.

What they should do is play this year as is, play the kids.

Then next year, sign Kovalchuk !!!!

  79. Yeah thats the ticket.

With our GREAT draft choices, we are going to be the Detroit of 2013. you hit it right on the head.

Obviously, you are either young or not have been a Ranger fan too long so you dont really know how things work. In order to rebuild with youth, you have to have talented youth that are going to develope into something.

Ok, so we have Callahan and Duby, they are regular players, Dubinsky is at tops a 3rd line center on a good hockey team and Callahan is a 4th liner.

Stall- i beleive out of all the brothers in the league, we got the less talented one. Now that being said, he is great, but he isnt going to live up to the offensive defenseman everybody said he would be. He isnt anywhere near Leetch.

Cut the crap and lets do something to make the team better. If that is getting rid of some youth for a fgoal scorer, you have to pull the trigger.

I never said they should make moves jsut to please us “foolish” guys. But i do expect something better than what i am receiving.

Would you buy a $10,000 Rolex is if was plastic and didnt tell the time correctly?

That is all i am saying.

Please, if you are going to make a comment, make sure it has meaning and holds water. Otherwise, stay the fugg off!

  80. BTW, Heatley would do well in NYC because you cannot really drive 90mph on any of Manhattan’s streets.

  81. TheMessiah, and you’ll sit here and drool over Heatly or whatever big name that Sather signs, and when he disappoints as they ALWAYS do, you’ll be the first one whining about how bad the signing was…fire Sather. It’s not only us. Think Chi is regretting signing Campbell for big bucks? Or The Flyers with Briere?

  82. Oh and one more thing- nobody is saying to make moves to make the playoffs. I am saying make moves to secure goal scorers on our team, then build accordingly.

We have the goaltendind, we have defense( and prospects)

    we DO NOT HAVE OFFENSE.

You need offense to win games. That is all i am saying.

  83. I have to aggree with you on the FIRE SATHER part, and while we are at it, lets get rid of Dolan too.

  84. Cally is not a 4rth liner on a “good” team. he is much better than that. Under Torts he will score 30 goals. He is a perfect fit for the system. Drury Cally and Higgins will be a great hard working Blue collar line that gets some good #s. This team will be uptempo and in your face next year and remind everyone of the year after the lockout when you see the work ethic

  85. The Rangers will not go after Heatley. They need a center. No way, no how do they go into this year with Drury/Dubinsky/Anisimov/Boyle. Not a chance. They need a center. Richards maybe, as Brooks said? (he was here for Avery’s bar opening, Torts loves the guy) Doubt there’s any shot at Vinnie. Hopefully they don’t think Cammaleri is a solution – he’s not even an upgrade over Gomez.

Don’t be surprised if Rozie and Zherdev are packing along with a D prospect for Dallas. The Stars would love to get out from under Richards’ contract and they need to shake things up.

  86. Johnny LaRue on

Everybody’s stats were skewed because of the dumb Renney system. Keep the young forwards under Tortorella and we’ll get a true picture of their capabilities.

  87. What is Z’s situation, Slats was saying over the weekend that he was having trouble talking to his agent but had registered the qualifying offer – is he worth much while he remains unsigned? He could bolt to the KHL and be worth nothing in a trade.

I saw the Richards thing but i’m putting that down to old connections. Buddies with Avery and used to play for Torts doesn’t mean Big D want to let him go and again it would leave us with 5 centers (unless 1 is included going the other way – AA or Dubi)

  88. LOL… HE F’ED UP 2 TEAMS BECAUSE HE IS SUCH A D-BAG!!! PLAY HOCKEY YOU WHINER, GIVE ME 5 MILL A YEAR AND I WILL CLEAN THE FLOOR WITH A TOOTHBRUSH.

  89. Big day today boys!

To any computer guru’s out there…any idea why I can’t post from home? I could a few weeks ago…now nothing?

  90. Nevermind, I found this from The Fourth Period (June 26th):

“Cammalleri, 27, made $3.6 million last season and could see his annual salary climb around the $6 million range.”

    Yikes. Stay away.

  91. BRING ON KESSEL!!!!
NO HOSSA…Too soft and does that stupid disappearing act in the playoffs!

    NO Gaborik!!!…too many injuries

  92. No need to create more mistakes just because we have cap room- If we can’t get a top talent (vinny, heater) without giving up a TON then I would stay away-

Ideal scenario today is us giving up Rosi + Sangs + Z + picks for some high end scoring talent-

  93. Is the fourth period running an all day update blog like last year? or only on twitter? twitter is blocked at work =/

  94. Kessel is not worth the $ he and his agent are seeking. Callahan could have scored just as many goals on that team last year…

  95. “Obviously, you are either young or not have been a Ranger fan too long so you dont really know how things work. In order to rebuild with youth, you have to have talented youth that are going to develope into something.”

Young? I’ve been watching the Rangers since Giacomin, Gilbert, Hatfield, Arnie Brown (remember him?)

You have no concept of how to build a team. And that goes for ANY sport. You start with a young foundation, and bring in guys when you get close. Reggie put the Yankees over the top because he was the last missing piece. The team was built through the farm system and astute trades (not for stars, but for role players). Think the Giants win the Super Bowl without their home grown guys? Plax was brought in as the missing piece..the go to guy for Eli. Is Heatly the ONE piece that brings us over the top? Not a chance, plus his production has declined over the last two years. By trading Cally, Dubi, for Heatly, you wind up robbing Peter to pay Paul. Yes, you get a goal scorer, but if that goal scorer is shut down, where is your secondary scoring coming from? Let’s keep going down that road…not to mention, who’s feeding Heatly the puck? Certainly nobody on our D* right now. And certainly none of our centers. Look if you can get Heatly for a package of Rozi, Korpi and one of our young D* in the minors, then ok, go for it….but I’m not trading my core young guys for a malcontent who already quit on one team, and might quit on another with declining point totals.

Sather and the Dolans ARE the problem, if they continue to go up the slippery slope you’re suggesting.

  96. If we are going free agent route, give me Gaborik- only dynamic, dynamic guy out there in my opinion-

If we can’t get him then lets get some good quality guys for reasonable contracts that become assets in the future rather than albatrosses

  97. Rumor – Ottawa asked for Rozie, Dubi and Higgins for Heatley. Rangers laughed.

  98. Doodie Machetto on

There’s still time to make the Heatley deal, although judging by what Edmonton was going to pay, it might prove too expensive.

And Cogliano was the piece Ottawa wanted, not Penner or Smid. Penner is just a replacement forward and Smid is a solid young defensive defenseman. But Cogliano is the offensive defenseman that Ottawa has craved over the past 2 years. Any media outlet that says Penner was the centerpiece is retarded. Penner was just something to help balance out the cap issues. Penner is a reclamation project, not the centerpiece of a deal for a superstar.

  99. At least Kessel is a young guy who’s shown potential. I’d rather throw money at a 22 year old with the world in front of him than at Heatly or Hossa. 36 goals at age 22, +23. For him I’d trade Dubi guys, a top D* prospect (Gilroy, DZ, Sangs, whoever)and a pick (and if you can get them to take Redden or Rozi, so much the better, swap the contract out with Kessel and you are set.

  100. Steve,

I dont understand why you are arguing with me, when we are saying the same thing. Your last line sums it up!!!!!!!!!

Sather and the Dolans ARE the problem.

  101. little green men on

If you think cally is a fourth liner I gotta questioned your hockey knowledge messiah.

  102. We need a center.

Unless they are planning on going into the season with Dubi centering an elite sniper (and they may be planning that), we need a center before we need a scoring wing.

We don’t need another defender. They have stockpiled high level defensive prospects. They know most of them very well and will move some today along with some salary (Rozie will be gone). They may then sign Komisarek. But they will bring in a center. And it might be Cammallleri. guess 39 goals is a bit of an upgrade over Gomez. Is he a little guy?

  103. Gaborik S-U-C-K-S!!!!!!!!!

    Yea, I said it.

He’s a 1 dimensional player coming off a huge injury who wants a long term contract at $8m+/year.

    NO THANKS!

  104. HEY CARP…. RUMOR OUT OF DETROIT IS HOSSA REJECTED DETROIT’S CONTRACT OFFER…. ANY TRUTH HERE??

  105. Doodie Machetto on

I don’t know how I feel about trading for Heatley now that Gomez is gone. Part of my motivation for getting him was an effort to get Gomez going since we were stuck with him for 5 years. It would’ve been like getting two players instead of just one. Now that we aren’t, I’d rather hang onto our young players, I think.

Although, if my original proposed deal of Rozsi-Zherdev-Sanguinetti is still on the table, I’d go for that. Throw in Higgins too for good measure if they want.

  106. Tell me what about Callahan makes him a GREAT hockey player./ He is a good third/fourth liner on any other GOOD TEAM.

You can question me all you want. Does the kid work hard? absolutely.

Does he have a good sense of hockey? yes

Is he a goal scorer? HELL NO

  107. noonan,
in 70 games Kessel scored 36 goals. So in 82 games he probably would have scored over 40…
    And he’s 21…

  108. Doodie Machetto on

    “Gaborik S-U-C-K-S!!!!!!!!!

    Yea, I said it.

He’s a 1 dimensional player coming off a huge injury who wants a long term contract at $8m+/year.

    NO THANKS”

Let’s be clear here. Gaborik is amazing. His injury history and contract demands are what suck. But Gaborik is a truly elite offensive talent.

  109. What scares me about Cammalleri is he’s coming off a career year, and there’s no track record says he’ll do that again. Kind of like we got Drury after 30+ goals, when he’s always been a 23-25 goal scorer.

  110. Doodie Machetto on

Say no to Kessel because he is RFA, so we’ll have to give up a substantial number of draft picks to acquire him at 6 million per season.

Anyone else think that Montreal will resign Kovalev and together with Gomez, they will become the most dynamic duo of Ranger killers in history?

  111. If we sign Gaborik, there’s a 100% chance he’s the next Lafontaine/Bure. Elite talent, plays a few games and retires.

  112. “in 70 games Kessel scored 36 goals. So in 82 games he probably would have scored over 40…
    And he’s 21…”

OMG he had one good year on a top seed team! No need to overpay the guy.

  113. Yeah I guess 39 G 43A does warrant 6 mill. Cammalleri can thank Drury (37-32-69 last year on Buffalo) for that one.

  114. Thanks, although i cant judge you as i dont know you. But stating that you want CAMMALLERI, i would say that makes you the BIGGER IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!

You should reaslly stop worrying about me and start worrying about your stupid comments.

  115. Callahan is a winner. The type of guy who makes your team better, even if he’s not scoring. And he WILL score under Torts attack system. He did score in the AHL as well.

  116. Cammalleri is also only 27. I have a feeling that Brooks is right about the Richards for Rozsival package deal.. Brooks was right about Drury/Gomez (I think) and about Redden last year.

  117. Make room for the sedins to play with their fellow gold medal winning contryman.

  118. Went to physical therapy this morning and all anyone could talk about was how we were gonna get Heatley today after he nixed the Edmonton deal…I have a feeling that Murray is so pissed at Dany now that he will either hold on to him just to spite him or if he really believes Dany wants to come to NY he may pull the same move the Pens did with Jagr all those years ago when they traded him to the caps instead of here for much less (Kris Beech????) Than we had offered…this could be a long day but I just have a feeling unless we trade dubinsky or callahan, Murray isn’t just gonna dump Heatley in our laps.

  119. little green men on

Under Torts (as opposed to Renny) I think Cally has the potential to score 25 to 30 goals. He is still learning the game. How many fourth liners can you name that can score 30 goals? If we hold on to him this year and he doesn’t score 25+ goals feel free to call me an idiot :)

  120. Cally will score at least 25, mark it.

People forget that Renney coached this Rangers team most of the season. Did any full-time Ranger score 30 goals?

  121. I don’t want Heatley any more. He wanted a trade, requested it to the friggin media.. and then he nixes the deal? What a selfish person.

  122. Doodie Machetto on

“Is he a goal scorer? HELL NO”

He had 22 last year. Other guys with 22 or 21:

Nik Backstrom, Henrik Sedin, Mike Ribeiro, Todd White, David Krejci, Chris Drury, Kris Versteeg, Ryan Clowe, Andrew Burnette, Jordan Staal, Nathan Horton, Niklas Hagman, Kristian Huselius, Daymond Langkow, Bill Guerin, Patrik Berglund, Blake Wheeler, Chuck Kobasew.

None of these guys are goalscorers either? What number makes you a goalscorer? Is it 25? Because if it is, you are leaving out Danny Alfredssen, Andrei Koystitsen, Chris Kunitz, Dustin Brown, and Milan Michalek.

Is it 30? If it were that would mean there are only 38 goalscoring forwards in the league. Barely one per team. Also, Vinny Lecavalier wouldn’t be a goalscorer.

The guy is a goalscorer. Is he an ELITE goalscorer? No. But to say he isn’t a goalscorer is foolish.

  123. understand that gaborik is injury prone- but when healthy (and that is a huge issue) he is about as top a talent as there is in the league-

Doodie- I hope your offer comes true, that would be great and leave us with cap room to make another move(s)

  124. He scored 22 playing more than half the season under Renney, so I don’t think 25-30 playing uptempo is a reach. Plus he does all the little things:

    He HITS!!!
He sticks up for his teammates
    He mucks in the corners
    He goes to the net
    He skates pretty well
    He backchecks well
    He can score on shootouts
    He’s clutch

Many of the things that Heatly doesn’t do by the way.

  125. Messiah… I disagree on your assessment of Staal. He is better than Jordan, but not as good as Eric. He gets the puck out of our zone, and always seems to be in position, so he is not as bad as you think. Every time Rozi gets the puck, my natural reaction is to look at the ceiling, because i already know she is giving it away if she’s is pressured at all. Staal is a stud d-man for a long long time on this team.

  126. Doodie Machetto on

“Did any full-time Ranger score 30 goals?”

No fulltime or partime Ranger did. Antropov had 28 between two teams.

  127. Callahan is definitely not a fourth-liner. He definitely proved that last year. With that said, I do think many Ranger fans vastly overrate his offensive abilities on this board, especially since he’s a fan favorite for his hustle and drive (I really like the kid). I dont understand how people are so sure that Cally is going to score 30. Honestly, I dont see it, Callahan scores most of his goals around the perimeter of the net and he played mostly with GOmez (he’s gone). Someone earilier mentioned he could be a 20-25 goal scorer, I could see that, but I dont think he’ll ever score more than 60 points in a season, so in that sense, I think people need to stop valuing him higher to say a 28 guy who has scored 50 goals twice and 40 goals 4 or 5 times…with that said, I’d rather not give up cally for him for the reason that Heatley seems to have a me first personality, plus what’s to say in two years he doesnt say he wants another change of scenery. He’s done it in ATL (though this one was understandable) and now Ottawa.

  128. “Did any full-time Ranger score 30 goals?”

No fulltime or partime Ranger did. Antropov had 28 between two teams.

What’s worse is that no Ranger had at least 60 points last year. THat’s just abysmal.

  129. “He HITS!!!
He sticks up for his teammates
    He mucks in the corners
    He goes to the net
    He skates pretty well
    He backchecks well
    He can score on shootouts
    He’s clutch”

He’s also the best forechecker on the team. He may not have the softest hands, but he is a goal scorer and a finisher.

  130. PeteK I agree. And he’s still very young with barely 2 years in the league. I have the hockey package and I listen to what others say about him and they ALL love him. He’s still raw, and D* develop later than other positions. Pronger was considered a bust his first couple of years. He really shows signs of developing into a great shutdown D* with some offensive skills. Will he be a Leetch? No, there’s probably only been a handful of D* better than him in the history of hockey. But he could develop into a top tier D* for sure. Be patient everyone, and stop selling the future for now.

  131. Everyone screams about Sather’s drafts, but then, the first decent guys we get, you’re ready to trade them away.

  132. jcl agreed we may overrate his goal scoring abilities (I see him putting in 30 soon) but he does so much more than just score goals.

  133. Doodie Machetto on

    “He HITS!!!
He sticks up for his teammates
    He mucks in the corners
    He goes to the net
    He skates pretty well
    He backchecks well
    He can score on shootouts
    He’s clutch”

I like Callahan, but I’ve seen nothing to suggest to me that he can score on shootouts or that he’s clutch. I’m not saying that both of those are wrong, just that he hasn’t been given the opportunity to prove them one way or the other.

As for the rest, Heatley hits a bit (certainly not at a clip like Callahan or Dubinsky, but neither of them score like Heatley, battles in the corners, goes to the net, and skates very well. I don’t know about his backcheck. But I do know that the shootout isn’t really Heatley’s thing.

  134. UESBlueshirt on

Heatley is an elite talent. Not Ovechkin, Crosby or Malkin level but talent-wise he’s a top tier winger. However he’s basically ensured a reputation as a me-first player after requesting to be traded from two teams. With ATL it was somewhat understandable, he didn’t want to deal with the tragedy on a daily basis and the the Thrashers did their best to get equal value. This time however no one is going to give him a free pass. Yet, I don’t blame him for not waiving his NTC if in fact he had already vetoed a trade to Edmonton only a few days earlier.

With regard to other UFA’s, there are no guarantees that Hossa/Gaborik even want to come to the Rangers.

So perhaps working out a trade with the Sens is the best way to ensure getting a 40+ goal scorer. If, and that’a a big if, Sather could manage sending Rozsival as part of the deal (and not taking any bloated contracts back in return) then the net savings of cap space on that deal along with the Gomez trade net cap space and combined with Naslund’s retirement then the Rangers have a golden opportunity to properly retool.

  135. May i ask a question and receive an honest answer based on nothing but truth?

    Why such HATRED towards Heatley?

  136. Doodie Machetto on

I see Callahan being a consistent 22-27 scorer, like Chris Drury. One or two years he might go above that, but I don’t think consistently.

  137. Heatly has a lot of personal baggage, hence the hatred. The car accident from way back when is still on his resume.

  138. Mister Delaware on

“May i ask a question and receive an honest answer based on nothing but truth?

    Why such HATRED towards Heatley?”

Half the people hate the idea of moving some of our young (cheaper) talent in order to get him when you could instead get a free agent for just cap space. (The Sabathia over Santana logic, to make a baseball analogy.)

The other half of the people hate him because “I’d play sports for free!” and g-d forbid he’s exercising the NTC he earned from Ottawa so this makes him spoiled or selfish or something.

Although it certainly seems that the board is in agreement to pass unless Ottawa looks at this as a dump rather than a near even exchange of talent. So that’s a plus.

  139. Callahan is a dime a dozen…………

We have 10 Callahans in our farm team.

  140. I give you credit about the accident on his ressume, but personaly, i dont care if the guy is an a$$hole or the nicest guy in the world. He has every right to try to make the most money he can as this is his job. If he can put the numbers up, I really dont care what he is or does in his personal life.

Now, with that, i am not saying we should go for him, i am just not sure whether to pass this up or not.

  141. If we get Heately, especially for Rosi, a pick and say Voros I have absolutely no problem with that
Even if we have to throw in Dubi (Even though I love him as a Ranger) I do it. But Sather for some odd reason has been decent so far in his trades.

Buit the fact is, and I agree with other posts above, we have ZERO 30 goal scorers on our team.
NAd to expect Cally or Dubi to magically turn into one is VERY wishful thinking

We need a legit 30 goal scoring winger, period
Were stacked on D so no worries there.

  142. Stop with the Callahan is a dime a dozen. Hes young, a great forechecker, kills penalties, and scores goals. He was invited to the USA team camp. He clearly is a talent. Not a Heatley level talent, but not dime a dozen. We don’t have a dozen young, 20-something goal scorers with a couple years of NHL experience.

  143. Going to play in Ottawa… see, this it where if I’m Slats I make a call to the Heatley residence and court him to PUSH to be traded to the Rangers. If we can get Heatley to sign off on a deal, I’m sure the Sens would approve of just about anything to be rid of his attitude and contract.

That said, I’m sure we’ll pay Kessel 6 mil and then give Sundin 8 mil and that’ll be all the signings we get.

  144. UESBlueshirt on

Why do people assume that Gaborik and Hossa are going to accept a 1 or 2 year deal? Hossa tried that out last year, didn’t work out for him but these guys are in the primes of their careers and probably feel they’ve earned multiyear deals with NTC’s attached.

  145. UESBlueshirt on

“Going to play in Ottawa… see, this it where if I’m Slats I make a call to the Heatley residence and court him to PUSH to be traded to the Rangers. If we can get Heatley to sign off on a deal, I’m sure the Sens would approve of just about anything to be rid of his attitude and contract.”

I believe that would be big time tampering…but if they got Sather fired I’d be for it.

  146. “TheMessiah

    Callahan is a dime a dozen…………

We have 10 Callahans in our farm team”

    We do? Please name them.

  147. Dr. Ogrodnick on

Mike, that’s called tampering, and would cost the Rangers a player or draft picks.

  148. You guys are obssessed with Cally. He is a good hockey player and i know him personally and is a great kid, but take it easy with the comments about him being a savior.

He is an average hockey player, with less than average hands. His work ethic is epic, and i beleive we can get a lot of value back for him in a trade. Hence why i would pacckage him in a deal for someone who is a goal scorer.

WE ARE IN DESPERATE NEED OF THIS!!!!!!!!!!

  149. Doodie Machetto on

BTW, poor Edmonton. What free agents will want to sign there after Nylander chose DC over them, Jagr chose Russia over them, and Dany Heatley nixed a trade there? Not to mention the ridiculous offer sheets they had to tender to Penner and Vanek for them to sign there (even though Vanek’s was matched). They’re like the Islanders of Canada.

  150. Doodie Machetto on

Dr. O, you’re right that that would be tampering. But Ottawa gave Heatley’s camp permission to broker their own deal, so if Heatley calls Slats, it wouldn’t be tampering.

  151. I don’t think most of us are over-evaluating Callahan. He is a 2nd line player, not a 3rd. I would trade him for Heatley because Heatley is a top line scorer. That being said, when people say he isnt good or he is a dime a dozen is ludicrous.

  152. I have no hatred for Heatly, I just think getting him for one or more of the best young players we have just retards this team’s future. I really believe that:

A)Heatly does NOT make us a Cup contender, any more than Dubi or Cally do. We need more than just Heatly

B)Heatly is a guy with declining talents, his best years are already behind him (hence his declining goal and point totals the last 2 years)

C)You don’t need a 50 goal scorer to win the cup, you need balance and enough guys who CAN score when called upon. The Devils won all those cups with a balanced team, not a superstar and crap.

D)If I could get Kessel for the same package I could get Heatly for, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Remember, the Bruins played a defensive style similar to what Renney played, and he STILL scored 36 goals. AND he’s 22 (in October)

When we get Heatly and he scores 30 goals and Torts ends up benching him one or two times for quitting on him, I can’t wait to come here and tell you guys I told you so.

  153. OK- maybe not dime-a-dozen, but you have to admit, he is being WAY overratted on this blog, and for that matter, in general.

  154. Jane's Addiction on

ya know you all hate on doobie for some reason, homegrown 2 way center who hits and mucks is good on faceoffs, and cmon did you see that move against the caps in the playoffs to score that game winning goal? doobie is 22 damn it! imagine the kid at 26!! gonna be one of the top centers in the league

and for callahan, the kids 24 and is our future capt, he will be a consistent 30 goal scorer from here on out, cmon doodie!

  155. I find it interesting how short-sighted some people on this blog are. Instant gratification and the lure of big names is what put us in this hole since 1994. That cup team was assembled to win, they did, then we haven’t really come close since. We’ve blown through overpaid-over the hill vets, put a bunch of ‘stars’ on the ice who couldn’t play together, traded away people that went on to great success, and didn’t focus on youthful talent.

I applaud Sather for, at least the moment, not dealing away Cally, Dubi, or Staal. We need a strong nucleus that will make us GOOD FOR MANY YEARS, NOT JUST ONE YEAR.

Stop looking at today, and start thinking about tomorrow.

  156. “When we get Heatly and he scores 30 goals and Torts ends up benching him one or two times for quitting on him, I can’t wait to come here and tell you guys I told you so.”

So if we get Heatley, you cant wait to come back and rub it in our faces? Wouldnt you be more inclined to hope he does well as opposed to looking forward to him failing?

  157. While I’m generally against bringing in an older guy, I’d for bringing Sundin here if we don’t take a huge cap hit, make him Captain, and use him the way we used Shanny, as a teacher for the young kids and as an attitude changer. While he never proved he could win with TO (another mismanaged franchise), he has won as Captain of the Swedish O team and he’s a work ethic guy. Would I pay him more than $3 million, not so sure…

  158. Sundin?? Jeez man…. i couldn’t be happier we didn’t sign him. We don’t need him.

  159. I think there is a very good chance of us trading Rozy, especially once Komaserek and Ohlund, and Kaberle start falling into place.

As much as i dont want to see Brad Richards here. There may be some truth to the Brooks proposal because as of now Dallas only has 6.1 million committed to their D-line

Look for Rozsival to be traded to :
TB – 4.9 million committed so far
Anaheim – 5.4 committed so far
Dallas – 6.1 committed so far
FLA – 9.6 committed so far

all these teams have very little Defensive Depth, and Rozsival at 5 million could fit there nicely

  160. Jive, of course I would want him to do well of course, maybe that was a poor choice of words. But the track record suggest I will be right.

  161. Doodie Machetto on

Sorry. Just don’t see him consistently scoring 30. I don’t think he has the release or the shot quality to do it. He scores garbage goals mostly. Not too many consistent 30+ garbage goal scorers. I’m having a hard time coming up with one in the league right now.

I’m not saying that he isn’t worthwhile, just that he isn’t a consistent 30. Not in my opinion anyway. Honestly, I hope I’m wrong.

  162. Brad Richards…. $7.8 million for 16 goals? WAKE UP GUYS… WE JUST TRADED GOMEZ’S 7 MILLION AND UNDER 20 GOALS AWAY…

  163. key word…. WAS. Brad Richards has 61 goals…. WHEN YOU ADD UP THE LAST 4 YEARS! c’mon. You gotta do better than that.

  164. Zherdev has 59 in 3 years to Richards 61 in 4 years… should we pay Zherdev 7 million a season??

  165. If we get Brad Richards, I will go back to blasting Sather

He has had a good few months, let’s hope he continues his new streak of wisdom and doesnt touch Richards. Unless it involves Redden. I would definitely take Richards’ 2 years remaining over Redden’s 6.

  166. Richards is a very good player but NOT 7.8 million a year good.

Apparently, Heatley is down to San Jose and NYR. I almost want San Jose to sign him so maybe we could make a trade with them for Clowe and Grier who are rumored to be on the Block

  167. Doodie,

Phil Esposito made a career of scoring 50 garbage goals a year, as did Tim Kerr, Cam Neeley, and Adam Graves. What those guys have that Cally doesn’t is size. SO that’s why I don’t think he’ll ever be a 50 goal scorer, but I do think he can be that second line mucker that scores 25 goals and 60 points every year. You think it’s easy to find guys like this? Consider that our top scorer last year didn’t crack 60 points. There are some really talented guys that just don’t do this even though they have all the tools (Alexandre Daige anyone?). But this endless cycle of trading away youth for superstars has got to stop somewhere. Kessel. I say, go for it. Heatly, unless it doesn’t cost us our future, I say no. A guy who scores 35-40 goals next year isn’t giving us the Cup. Even Jagr didn’t do it for us. A young developing team with a couple of young snipers (Pittsburgh anyone?) will do it. We have the young D* and we are set at goal, we just need to develop the young forwards.

  168. No Heatley, no Sundin, and the Rangers are not that stupid. No way does Tortorella want any part of Sundin. He is not a first line center, he is an accesory part and a second liner at best and we already have 3 second line centers.

The Rangers will add either Calamari or trade for Richards or stand pat.

  169. Doodie Machetto on

“I find it interesting how short-sighted some people on this blog are. Instant gratification and the lure of big names is what put us in this hole since 1994. That cup team was assembled to win, they did, then we haven’t really come close since. We’ve blown through overpaid-over the hill vets, put a bunch of ‘stars’ on the ice who couldn’t play together, traded away people that went on to great success, and didn’t focus on youthful talent.”

Didn’t we build that team in a very similar way? I mean, yeah we had homegrown Leetch, Richter, Zubov, a rookie Kovalev, and Nemchinov. But we traded away Amonte, Messier was a trade from a couple of years earlier, Graves was a free agent, Larmer was a free agent, Anderson, Matteau, Olczyk, Lowe, Tikkanen, Beukeboom. All outside guys.

Now, compare our homegrown talent now to the homegrown telent then. Hank can cover for Richter. Kovalev and Nemchinov, thats Callahan and Dubinsky. But if you think we have a Leetch or Zubov right now (nevermind both), you’re wrong.

And besides, I’m getting away from my point here. We didn’t do it in 94 with home grown talent. I’m not saying we should go out and sign every free agent around, but sometimes, using only your homegrown players is a mistake. You need to supplement them if they aren’t good enough.

Truth is, ours aren’t good enough.

  170. steveknj, nobody’s predicting him to be a 50 goal scorer. we’re not that dumb/foolish to think he’s going to be the next ovechkin or anything, but he’s got 30-40 goals a season talent if he keeps developing.

  171. Doodie Machetto on

Stevek, first of all, I’m not saying I don’t think Callahan isn’t valuable. I think he is very valuable. I was just saying that I don’t think he becomes a consistent 30.

Second, goaltending has improved quite a bit from the days of Esposito, Kerr, Neely, and even Graves. Goaltenders are so solid on low pucks that it is much harder to jam things in. What i said about not being able to think of a consistent 30 garbage goal scorer was qualified as saying that I can’t think of one in the game today. I really can’t.

Franzen. I think that’s it. And I really had to think about it.

  172. Kevin Allen: “Based on interviews this a.m., NHL consensus is NYR were winners in Gomez deal. Higgins, McDonagh and $5 mil cap space is high value.”

Sather still knows how to trade! Let’s see if he makes another trade or actually makes some smart signing(s). Sjostrom and Betts are out there for the taking! Betts is already gone in my mind, unfortunately, especially with that Boyle trade, but he is going to be a better even-strength player, I think.

  173. Here’s the thing about 94. We knew we were close by the time we got there. We won the Prez trophy 2 years earlier. We had some GREAT young talent. Graves…a YOUNG free agent, just starting to develop. Amonte, Weight, they were used to get the FINAL pieces of the puzzle. Are we sure that Heatly is the FINAL piece? If we get to the East Final this year, and our good young players develop, I’m all for bringing in the sniper if that’s the one piece we need. I’ll even trade one of those young guys to develop. But to throw money around for a guy who’s a second tier superstar, when we are NOT EVEN CLOSE to winning the cup right now is stupid and retards our growth. I want young developing guys, under 25 to grow together.

  174. Mister Delaware on

“Phil Esposito made a career of scoring 50 garbage goals a year, as did Tim Kerr, Cam Neeley, and Adam Graves. What those guys have that Cally doesn’t is size.”

    Adam Graves has tiny feet.

  175. UESBlueshirt on

Larmer wasn’t an FA, he was part of the Turcotte/James Patrick 3 way trade with Hartford.

But back then at least they had top guys to make those bad trades (Weight, Norstrom, Savard, etc).

The Rangers might not have been like the Wings of the past couple of years with a majority of home grown talent but the 94 team still had Leetch/Zubov/Richter/Kovalev and they were all big centerpieces of the team.

The farm has gotten better over the past few years, I’d hate for them to go screw it up but even if Grachev skews more toward the reward end of the risk/reward spectrum, he’s still at least two years away from meaningfully contributing at the NHL level. We haven’t even seem what he does in the AHL.

Point is, if they want to add a 30-40 goal scorer this year, it will have to come from outside.

  176. I think it’s foolish to think that just one player (any player) would make us a cup contender.

  177. Steve,

What you are saying is a moot point.

Doodie never said to throw money away, what was sais is that the 94 team wasnt exactly home grown, and our homegrown guys back then were alot better than our home grown guys now. It doesnt take a genius to see the talent differences.

Not to mention, we had a real leader, and a lot of talent who could put the puck in the net.

I will however compare Henrik to Mike.

  178. Greir is a nice hard working Grinder that would be good for the 3rd line but we got a # of 3 liners waiting for the call up. I think Moore makes the team as a 3rd or 4th liner. I also bet that we sign Joel Lundqvist to compete for our 4th line center position

  179. Rick any news from camp yesterday? Or was everyone wiped out from day 1.
jpg thanks for the website Rangers improved themselves capwise and depth wise. Sather made cap room and like he said made alot more possibilities. I understand where the Canadien fans are coming from. It is the opposite of when Gomez came to the Rangers. Maybe he will click with their fowards better than he did in New York. I think with lower expectations they may be surprised. I was excited when Gomez was signed but he did not blend with any line combinations not even Jagr. I hope Sather learned his lesson with big UFA contracts.
It makes no sense to trade Callahan, Dubinsky or Stahl until we see how they play a full season for Tortorella
with his conditioning & system. They all have tremendous upsides and are truly Rangers. Heatley is hard to fathom. His 180 goals over 4 years are very enticing but how much of that was possible due to his linemates. His downside is would he be desireable in the lockerroom or worth the price of the players lost in trade.

  180. 1- the callahan/dubi debate over Heatley. Dubi and callahan are still in there growing phase.
2- heatley plays on a line with alfresson and spezza, two very good players where callahan and dubi play with average players at best.
3- I was extremely happy yesterday when I read sather pulled of the trade to get rid of Gomez and I praised sather which is extremely rare. After sleeping on it I know in the back of my mind sather will use that money and spend it like a drunken sailor and sign another bad player/contract and the rangers will be back to square one.

  181. I understand what Doobie was saying. But here’s the thing, by the time that we develop a cup contender, Heatly will really be a dimishing talent. Do you seriously think bringing in Heatly and two other FA is going to bring us a cup in the next two years? When has this EVER worked…for anybody?

  182. Darcy Loewen on

So it was reported on one of the Sens Forums that Doug McLean (former Blue Jackets GM) was reporting on Sportsnet that the Oil trade has enticed Sather to send the following to Murray:

Dubinsky, Callahan & Del Zotto FOR Heatley.

Murrey is apparently holding out for Staal in any deal to the Rangers.

Still no luck finding a link for this, but I know how much you guys love your Dubi, Cally & the kids on D.. and how much you’d RIOT if this deal went through.

Have a great Free Agent Day!

  183. Forget that trade Darcy. And it’s probably so much speculation, just like here, being a Sens fan forum.

  184. Darcy Loewen on

I think it’s wishful-thinking to get that kind of package back, and the only reason I mentioned it was that McLean had reported it.

And by the way, the Sens aren’t interested in Rozival, Zherdev OR Redden in any potential deal for Heatley, thanks all the same :)

  185. My Perfect Day today would be to :

    1. Trade Rozsival to Tampa Bay for Paul Ranger
    2. Heatley signs with San Jose and we trade for Marleau (some picks and/or some prospects since they cant take money back)
    3. We sign Cammalleri
    4. We resign Mara

    Cammalleri(5.5) – Marleau(6.3) – Zherdev(3.5) = 15.3
    Higgins(2) – Drury(7) – Callahan(1.75) = 10.75
    Dubinsky(1.75) – AA (821k) – Avery(1.9) = 4.47
    Korpi(1) – Boyle(700k) – Byers(700k) = 2.4

    Staal(826k) – Girardi(1.55) = 2.37
    Redden(6.5) – Sangs(855k) = 7.35
    Mara(1.75) – Gilroy (1.5) = 3.25

    Hank(6.87) – Vally (750k) = 7.62

TOTAL CAP HIT OF 53.51 MILLION
