Sather live …

GLEN SATHER:

“We’ve got lots of cap room now, and it opens lots of options.”

Thinks Higgins will be a goal-scorer … was hurt three times last year. Likes the other two kids as future NHL players, too.

“Torts has talked about the young guys all year and we wanted to make some room for them, and we did.”

“Since this deal happened I’ve had three calls (from other teams), and it doesn’t take long for people to realize you’re going to make some changes.”

—————-

“I spoke with Chris. He’s very excited coming here. He’s very optimistic.”

Sounds like he doesn’t expect any trouble signing him.

—————-

CHRIS HIGGINS:

Called his injuries bumps in the road. Had an injury in preseason, came back and hurt his shoulder.

Was surprised about the trade. Heard his name thrown around all year “but you never believe it’s going to happen.”

“When I heard it happened, I was thrilled. If there was one place I was going to play other than Montreal, it would be in front of my friends and family.”

Was a Canadiens fan growing up, even though he was a New Yorker. But always wanted to play for the Rangers and watched them more than any other team. His first memory was the ’94 Cup. He was only 11. Had to hear from friends how the Rangers were better than his Habs.

Watched and rooted for Leetch, who went to the same high school.

“l like to play a relentless style. I like to be moving the whole time I’m out there for my shift. I pride myself in my work ethic.”

“I’ve always liked the way (Tortorella’s) teams have played. They don’t seem they take their foot off the gas pedal very often. Playing against the Rangers, they were one of the hardest teams to play against.”

—————–

Said he had a groin injury in camp last year, missed the first six games. Then was “just getting back to steam” when he hurt his shoulder in mid-season and missed 19 games. Felt he was at 100 percent by playoff time and expects to be that when camp begins.

  1. heatley next. do not trade dubi for heatley. give them; roszival, zherdev, and a good d prospect or a high pick.

that is fair. the rangers will not be adding any salary, and get a sniper and they have a ton of D men prospects………..

higgins can play, 2 way player also, he has grit also…….

  2. this just in:

Heatley and Mike Comrie to NYR for Rozi, Korpi, Dubinsky, and next year’s first round draft.

hold on…let me find the link… my browser just crashed lol

  3. NYRjurgenno88 on

great news… i for oen think Higgins, Callahan, Avery and potentially Heatley makes for a very nice top 4 wingers. Add to that Anisimov Drury and Dubinksy potentially through the middle and its a good young top set. Obviosuly one of these and Zherdev will be moved for Heatley????

anyway, we just got better for the long term.

  4. From Craig Custance of The Sporting News:
Sather on Higgins: “He’s excited to be coming home.”
Sather: “It gives us some options tomorrow.”

  5. CCCP… I hope ur wrong. Dubi and Korp are two of the more important players on our team. Korp has all kinds of offensive potential… and we know what Dubi can bring. Losing that much youth to acquire Heatley (good) and Comrie (he SUCKS!)… I’m very iffy on that.

  6. Sather traded away my two fellow Anchorage boys on the same day? oh no.

I do like this team better than yesterday. I have to admit that. bittersweet though.

  7. It would be sweet if our whole D could be Staal, Girardi, Gilroy, Del Z, McDonagh, and…………..Redden. Okay, sweet and sour, but hey that’s good chicken, maybe it will work.

  8. Am I the only one who doesn’t want Heatley? I’m sorry, but he should be in jail. Yeah, yeah we all make mistakes and all that. But c’mon.

  9. Don’t trade Dubi, Cally, or Staal. Go get the Sedin twins C and LW (thats 2/3 of a first line) and they will only cost money no prspects.

  10. Why would he trade Dubi, it doesn’t make sense. I rather have Dubi + Hossa/ Gaborik, than just Heatley

  11. HANNY

He could drink and drive till he’s blue in the face, as long as he puts up 50 goals every year, and gets us at least one Cup before his contract ends.

  12. Yeah, the more i think of it, Dubi isn’t going anywhere. It’s gonna be Cally.

I really hope Grachev isn’t part of the deal.

Get Gaborik, one year !!! Go for the Cup, if it doesn’t work out, we can all find Slats and…..take care of business !

  13. CCCP June 30th, 2009 at 6:09 pm

why do people like to hang on the sh.t from the past??

    GET OVER IT!
    *****************************

If it was your kid that was killed I don’t think you would “Get over it”

  14. Orr I would agree

I would think Callahan would be the one to go over Dubinsky now that Gomez is gone. After all, Higgins and Callahan are the same type of player (offensively, Defensively, and they like to throw their bodies around), except that Higgins is like 2 years older.

  15. Carp, keep us updated on anything with Heatley :)

If anything comes official i’ll be running up and down time square in my underwear.

  16. DCloutier39

well, its not my KID…so i have no reason to hold the grudge!

Those kids were old enough to make responsible decisions… and they didn’t at that time…lesson learned…move on.

  17. I don’t think Cali or Dubi has to go anywhere…we can throw in Anisimov and Sanguinetti and they won’t want Dubi or Cali.

  18. Also, it seems Habs fans are pissed…they wanted a big center, not a small one, and they are pissed they just got rid of their best Dmen in their farm system.

  19. Laurel Babcock on

Hmmm. I wonder who it was that started the whole Heatley discussion on this blog to start? Oh yeah, me!

so, what shall his nickname be? the heater? is he already called that? I dunno. slap me on the nose with a newspaper if I’m uninformed heaven forbid.

  20. I heard Callahan name was requested, but Rangers were saying no, as they should. I’ve heard Dubie, Rozi, maybe one other plus pick or Dubie, Zherdev and others for Heatley. Don’t think we should give up on Korpie.

  21. hey sather-

see what it feels like to be on the good side of a trade/acquisition that makes the rest of the league lol

  22. Hey guys…Ryan McDonagh is the best part of this trade…#1 prospect in HABS System according to Hockeysfuture…he will be a 1st pair defensemen!

  23. If I did what Heatley did, I would probably be in jail and definitely wouldn’t have my job. Love the double standard.

And please, with the Get over it and lets move on? People still chant “potvin sucks” for something that happened before most of us on here were born. ‘Beat your wife potvin,’ I guess we should get over that too

  24. Im just happy cause the Habs fans are so pissed. Nothing turns my frown upside down, like a good pissed off Habs fan.

It’s funny, they’re saying Higgins is better than Blowmez. Hahaha.

Slats very well may be a hero, if this kid turns out to be what these idiot Habs fans think he will be. Who knows. I still wish we could have gotten one of Pacioretty, or D’Agostini, but what are you gonna do ? Slats has got rid of a ton of cash.

Rozi HAS to be next. Get this piece of crap out of NY. Id love to see Rozi playing a War video game, probably gets all of his teammates killed cause he never shoots the enemy. Story of his life.

  25. Sorry.. I’m done.. I just don’t like the guy… I have no tolerance for drinking and driving

  26. ORR WHAT ?!?!
    June 30th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
    HANNY

He could drink and drive till he’s blue in the face, as long as he puts up 50 goals every year, and gets us at least one Cup before his contract ends

orr- noo dude. i love ya bro, but i dont want anybody havin to die because heatley likes to drive drunk. what if he killed me orr? id miss the cup and parade man?? what if he ran over cccp or pavel, or laurel, or greg? ok run over greg, but cmon, what about everyone else? lol, j/k greg. no really, he did make a mistake, but nobody goes out planning on killing someone when theyre drunk driving. its a horrible tragedy that needs to be stopped. and people should face serious jailtime for it, but heatley comin to the rangers has nothin to do with that incident. were not getting him for any other reason than to make the team better. no bad emotions should be attached to this guy. its way long ago and its over. lets forget this whole drunk driving thing

  27. Im sure Dreary isn’t bothered by this. But he must know, if it wasn’t for his NTC, it would be him in Montreal right now, and not Blowmez.

  28. Where's Pavelich? on

I like Higgins but there is a big talent differential between him and Gomez (even though Gomez hasnt been greatw/ us)..if the Dman is big and hits.. maybe it will turn out to be a nice trade.. still, Sather lessened the value of Gomez with that ridiculous contract

  29. Lol, i don’t want anybody to die, but im just saying, if he puts up good numbers, ill officially forget aboot the sh*tty things he’s done.

  30. I think this MacDanough kid and MDZ are gonna push Sangs/Potter and maybe even Sauer (“sigh” hope not) out in a trade.

We shall see..this just changed my entire evening LOL.

  31. ESPNEWS- still showing tennis and yao ming news

someone needs to wake up in Toronto and get tv deals worked out

  32. I really can’t believe anyone on this blog is complaining about Sather moving Gomez.

The dynamic of the team obviously needed to be changed and Sather’s made a move. I give him credit for being aggressive. While I don’t always agree with his moves, the last few years they’ve been strong – dropping Jagr/Shanahan, adding Gomez/Drury, replacing Renney and now this.

While Gomez was a good player, he never lived up to his paycheck and his smirking schtick got old quick. The guy never stepped up when it was time for the rubber to hit the road.

The chances of Callahan or Dubinsky ever approaching the skill level of a player like Hossa, Heatley or Lecavalier are remote at best. Frankly, I don’t think it happens. I would trade Callahan or Dubinksy in a second for Heatley or Lecavalier, I wouldn’t have to think twice about it.

Who is to say that Sather doesn’t throw Gomez’s $7.3mn at Hossa or Gaborik tomorrow and the team doesn’t lose any young guys???

  33. Unless he goes off the reservation and does something ridiculous to get Heatley, this is probably the best move Slats has made since becoming GM. Montreal really got the short end of the stick with this one. Thus far, great trade – cleared up cap space and weakened another team in the conference that’s been hard for us to beat that last few seasons. If nothing else, it’s retribution for the six goal comeback they sprung on us at the end of the ’08 season.

  34. Yeah, i saw an interview with the parents a few seasons ago during a Trashers game. And they have said that they forgave Heatley, and don’t blame him, or hold a grudge.

    Sham-POW !!!

  35. If we get Heatley w/o giving up any salary cap space, we are back to the same place as we were before dealing Gomez, just with a different player. So hopefully we will get rid of some cap if we do make another trade.

  36. horrible trade

out of our 4 toxic contracts Gomez was the best player

if we absolutely needed to shed one of those contracts because of the horrible signings Sather has made, then you waive Redden…you DON’T trade your best (only?) offensive playmaker…and what sense would Heatley make at this point?

    STILL GOTTA FIRE SATHER

  37. MiamiPimp (aka The Most Interesting Man in the World) on

trading away Callahan would be utter bush-league

  38. i would love to get hossa and keep our young guys too jjp. but id still rather have heatley over gabgroinorik or marion houdini hossa. he sucked so bad in the playoffs this year.

  39. Laurel Babcock on

Potvin s…ucks is not about not moving on. it’s a fine tradition and I for one always laugh when I hear the whistle start. Even Pots thinks it’s funny.

Sally, glad to see you here and not just lurking! Where’s Linda?

“McDonagh is going to be a real stud in the NHL.” Hmmmm. I must look up his picture…

  40. marion Hossa on

please pass on heatly. Sather, save the money you dumped from Gomez and try to sign Cammalleri and Komisarek.

  41. NYRGuy: Not exactly the same place, as Heatley is a much more valuable commodity at 7.5 a year than Gomez will ever be.

  42. anyone else THRILLED about the prospects of this teams defense for the next 10 years? Barring any d-men being traded, look at this possible defense in no particular order:

    Staal
    Girardi
    Gilroy
    McDonagh
    Del Zotto
    Sanguinetti
    Potter

long way from the Quintal days!!

  43. Rich it wasn’t a horrible trade…we cleared 7.5 million off the cap and still got a 2nd line winger, top prospect in the HABS organization and a tough defensemen that could round out the top 6. It was an extremely good trade. Now we can pay someone 7.5 million that will actually live up to their contract.

  44. Sather: “It gives us some options tomorrow.”

    ……………..

SO WOULD WAIVING REDDEN…if we thought Drury was barely a good 3rd liner, I can’t wait to see this overrated clown try to center the 1st line

  45. breaking news- nyr trade rozy, zherdev, korpi, sangs and a 1st next year, for dany heatley, and a convertible that has a breathalizer attached to the steering wheel

  46. YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!

NOW WE MUST KEEP CALLAHAN AND THE YOUNG CORE (STAAL, DUBINSKY). I DON’T CARE IF WE DON’T GET HEATER. WE ARE COMPETITIVE AGAIN!!!!

  47. Billy Mays here with Danny Heatley !!

He scores goals, he plays guitar, he crashes car, YES, that’s right, he even crashes CARS. Watch as he scores goals, with a flick of the wrist, and he beats people up, with a swing of the fist.

    BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE !!!

If you order now, ill even throw in a LIVE contract negotiation with Chris Neil. He fights, he hits, he has a gap in his teeth, that’s right, he even has a gap, just like the Shwartseneggor !!!

    Here’s how to order !!!

  48. makes sense that sather should at least make a phone call to ask what it would take to get him, no?

  49. Hey guys,

have been spending the summer on the golf course so I haven’t been a regular but I will say getting rid of Gomez is great. Higgins, we retain his rights but hopefully won’t sign him for above his value. Let’s make a serious move for Hossa. It may not be possible but it’s either Hossa or Komisarek. Our D would be sick.

    …………………………………………..

we also could’ve cleared $6.5 million off the Cap just by waiving Redden and not trading our best offensive playmaker…did we need to shed a contract? or more than one? yes…did we need to do it by trading Gomez? no

you really think Heatley will live up to his $7.5 million salary playing with THIS roster? or without Gomez here? and Higgins is NOT a 2nd line winger, AT BEST he’s barely a 50 point guy

  51. I like the last part about his future on hockeysfuture

    Future

“McDonagh has it all and is expected to play a key role in the Canadiens’ fortunes for the next decade. If not a number-one blueliner, he would be considered a 1A, with the talent to easily stake a long-term claim on the first defensive pairing.”

  52. Hopefully Rozy will end up in ottawa and we can sign komisarek – he is best friends with higgins

  53. mcdonut should be very interesting now that we have so many good d prospects. sathers gotta trade at least 1 or 2 of them to land heatey

  54. Dore33… totally agreed. To make you even happier… have you read the scouting report on Pavel Valentenko? “Most hated player in the AHL… plays like Bryan Marchment.” EXACTLY what we need on the blueline, contrasting all those talented, offensive guys.

  55. CCCP June 30th, 2009 at 6:32 pm

    Hey DCloutier39… read this…

“Graham Snyder lost his son when Atlanta Thrashers star Dany Heatley crashed a convertible while speeding on a winding road. The father asked an Atlanta judge yesterday not to compound that loss by putting Heatley in jail.”

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A64521-2005Feb4.html

    OK? now…MOVE ON!

    **********************

Please don’t tell me to “MOVE ON!” We will never agree on this so stop berating me.
Snyder’s parents forgave him which is very kind of them. His son was friends with him and I can understand forgiving him because it was an accident. But drinking and driving is a crime whether or not you kill someone. I’m sure if a stranger walking down the road was killed instead of Heatley’s friend his parents wouldn’t be so forgiving.

Since you want to pretend it never happened and will cheer for all his goals lets consider this conversation over.

  56. Laurel, me and my beer are right here. I’m gonna go break the news to Gomez that I’m shipping him off to Canada. I don’t think he’ll care. Or understand.

I’m cautiously optimistic about these moves so far. Gotta get these nerves under control though.

  57. Rick Carpiniello love your site. Is it a done deal Heatley will be with the Rangers ? Is the source reliable ?

  58. bull dog line on

    mike in ia,
agree on trading one of the Dmen. but now it wont hurt so much.

  59. there is no need to trade any key young players. they have the cap room now to sign a UFA winger tomorrow

  60. Rick Carpiniello June 30th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

let’s not take this Heatley-Snyder thing too far, OK. The kid really suffered for that mistake, and I imagine still suffers from it.

    **************************

I think Snyder suffered more, as did his family.

    Sorry, I’m done now.

  61. DC, Why don’t you take a Chill Pill.

If you order now, i will throw in my world famous Zorbeez !!! To clean the mess you might make if you spill a drink on your beloved carpet.

    Here’s how to order !!

  62. why komisarek? we need tough d but we need scoring way more than we need more d men. lets get a scoring winger for gomez first!!!, then get a d man. lol holy crap i really hope sather did the right thing here. gomez and heatley couldve been a dynamic duo

  63. DanTheRangerFan on

you guys need to chill with the heater jokes….he made a huge mistake and payed for it with the loss of a friend….he lives with that everyday…what he did was reckless and tragic…. many others have done the same stupid thing and still do.. but thankfully with a different outcome. Lets move on now….

  64. Well, I stated on this blog sather has to dump at least one of the four bad contracts to make this team better or to have a chance at getting a goal scorer, there’s one. If sather can figure out how to get rid of rozi and redden I will be extremely impressed because I have bashed sather for years but I love this move getting rid of gomez. I like higgins, he is gritty and can score, good character player.

  65. cloutier- people die every day man. its called life. sh@##^ happens. people make mistakes. wtf does heatley comin to the rangers have anything to do with what happened years ago? this is a hockey site. not a mothers against drunk driving rally

  66. Doodie machetto on

I love this trade. I’d say more but I’m on an iPhone and it’s a pain in the butt. Good riddance gomez. Now I am against the heatley trade! Too bad this all but assures it is going to happen. Unless the package doesn’t include callahan, Dubinsky, or staal, then i’d be all for it.

  67. I don’t know why Sather would pay Heatley $4mn tomorrow, get saddles with that contract and lose a young guy when you could wait till noon and make a run at Hossa or Gaborik. If you’re Hossa’s or Gaborik’s agent – how could you not listen to an offer from the Rangers tomorrow. And does anyone think that Heatley is that much better than Hossa or Gaborik (ignoring injuries)?

  68. Laurel Babcock on

Blog mama says listen to Dad….let’s really move on back to hockey, eh? (sorry Carp, don’t mean to step on your toes, but eeesh).

  69. bulldog- yep. we got plenty of leverage now with moving d men for a scorer.

pavel- im sad too. i cant bring myself to watch the gomez interview. hes sad. im sad. and all because sather had to sign redden and drury instead of just gomez and rozy

  70. Doesn’t the Gomez deal, getting McDonagh open the door for some of our young defense getting dealt?

    Potential Trade:

Heatley for Sangs, Sauer, Voros, Zherdev and a 1st next year?

Gilroy and McDonaugh replace Sangs and Sauer… might even be an upgrade.

Zherdev/Voros for Heatley then is a no brainer!

Maybe they’re stupid enough to take Voros… considering Chris Neil is prob gone?

  71. Get Heatley, and go for Gaborik tomorrow. Sign him to a one year deal. Go for it next season !!

Do it now, while we still have a young capable goaltender !!

  72. DanTheRangerFan on

I hope we keep higgins we need that grit power…Ive heard rumors we got him to make a future trade…hope not

  73. It has to do with the fact that I don’t like him and if he is on my team I have to pretend to want him to to well to help the team.

It’s the whole thing.. do you root for the team name or the players on the team?

Similarly, there were a lot of people that flipped out when the Yankees considered getting Manny Ramirez. Not that he wouldn’t help the team produce, but did fans want a guy like that on the team? In hindsight, they were right.

  74. UESBlueshirt on

If they can get rid of Rozi in a deal for Heatley would it make sense to maybe take a stab at signing Camalleri? Especially if they have to give up Dubi to get Heatley.

  75. Doodie machetto ,
I’m confident that sather isn’t going to trade dubi, callahan and stall. I don’t see rangers getting heatley. Murray already said if he can’t get the right deal heatley will be a thrasher this year. I see heatley going nowhere.

  76. Redden is OBVIOUSLY the contract that needed to go, especially with the D-Men that we have on the NHL level/in the system, but because Sather doesn’t have the guts to admit a mistake or ask Dolan to bite a $32 million dollar bullet, we traded our best offensive player

Gomez averaged almost a point-per-game his first season with us! did you see that ANEMIC roster he had to work with last season? NO ONE as a playmaker could produce decent numbers with that roster…or playing under Renney’s stifling system for 3/4 of the year

have fun watching Redden, Drury or Rozsival just try to even skate the puck successfully into the offensive zone on the PP next year

  77. MIKE

It wont ever happen. Voros sucks, there’s no need for him there. They don’t want prospects that could potentially be solid NHL d-men, they want a roster player who has potential. Staal, Dubi, or Cally. One of them may be gone by tonight.

  78. Lets not panic about not having a guy to carry the puck into the zone…free agency didn’t even start yet.

  79. spector is sayin that calgary could try to trade phaneuf for heatley when they sign bouwmeester.

  80. Orr… if Sather trades one of those 3 he’s a moron. Trade them Roszival… if that’s not enough… get this, forget Heatley then! He ain’t worth it, if we’re giving up our core.

  81. RICH

He wasn’t a good fit here. And i heard a lot of rumors that he and Torts didn’t really get along when he came in. For obvious reasons.

Blowmez put himself in this position. Whether he does good in Montreal or not, it wont matter, cause he would have never amounted to much here. Just a bad fit.

And he’ll be the last Devil we ever steal from them. For sure !

  82. DanTheRangerFan on

Shoryuken I dunno…We have seen more idiotic things then that…could be possible

  83. NYRjurgenno88 on

i cant believe TSN are reporting Ottawa may accept Penner and Smid (compeltely unproven)for Heatley instead of Roszival (hate him but he gives u 35 pts) anda 25 goal man in Zherdev qith a high ceiling????

im hoping McKenzie is way off the mark on this one.

I think our offer would be more enticing especially if we add a pick.

  84. Let’s not forget that Hossa is a FA…he wants less money than what Healtey makes and we wouldn’t have to give up any prospects

  85. June 30th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
spector is sayin that calgary could try to trade phaneuf for heatley when they sign bouwmeester.

I would take Phaneuf and send them Roszy and a prospect.

  86. DanTheRangerFan on

ya cccp I thought the same thing….Didnt he drink some oxi- clean or something ha

  87. MIKE

This isn’t some random loser you’re trying to get, it’s one of the leagues top goal scorers. That trade would work in NHL 09, but unfortunately Murray isn’t dumb enough to make that deal. Rozi is decent, Sangs, and Sauer are unproven, Voros sucks, Zherdev might not even be in the NHL next year. The deal breaker is Cally, Dubi, or Staal.

You can skip Heatley, but it doesn’t seem like Slats wants to do that, and the fact that he traded Blowmez is proof enough that he’s gunning for the guy, and plans on getting him by nights end.

  88. NYRjurgenno88,

Ottawa does not want to trade for Zherdev because he hasn’t accepted the $3.25m qualifying offer, and there are rumors of him going to the KHL.

The only way Heatley lands in NY is if Sather gives up Dubinsky/Callahan/Staal (one of them) + Rozsival + top prospect (DZ) + 1st 2010

  89. Scott Gomez being better than Drury and Redden doesn’t mean squat. He stunk up the joint and kept talking about how he knew what he had to do — then didn’t do it.

Good riddance, no matter how much he lights up Montreal. Now, how about a proven sniper? How about a player who IS the talent and does play better, instead of one who sets up talent and makes others play better?

  90. KingLundqvist30 on

I hear one of the provisions of the Rangers landing Hossa is to also bring back Marcel Hossa…

  91. DanTheRangerFan June 30th, 2009 at 7:00 pm

DC are you still talking??? move on

    ****************************

Obviously you read my post, if you don’t care why bother to respond. Kiss my @$$

  92. good stuff, esp all the “we lost our best offensive playmaker” lines lol…what? we have to have at least 1 to have a “best”. thanks, i’ll be here all week, tip your waitresses and drive safe!

  93. NYRjurgenno88 on

    Pavel

i agree but i personally think owning the rights to Zherdev in the KHL is better than Penner on your own roster lol

  94. Yup Billy died, he had some kind of Heart Disease. That guy had one wicked voice, id love to hear him do NHL games on Verses. Id rather hear his voice than Beininati.

    JAY G

Lol, can you imagine Komisarek, Avery, and Phaneuf all on NYR. Lol, they all dated or date Cuthbert. That would be a crazy locker room.

  95. From McKenzie on TSN:
Heatley to Oilers talks heating up

Meanwhile, before free agency officially kicks in at noon eastern time on Wednesday, Ottawa’s Dany Heatley could be on the move.

Edmonton is abuzz with rumors the deal is close and it’s becoming obvious now there is a deal to be made between the Oilers and Senators.

Ottawa wants Dustin Penner as part of the package dating back to Sens’ GM Bryan Murray’s days in Anaheim with Penner and as much as Edmonton would like to move Penner and his $4.25 million cap hit, Heatley’s $7.5 million is a tough nut to crack.

Throw in a young roster Defenceman – Ladislav Smid used to be in Anaheim, too – and a prospect or another young roster player and that’s a deal that could fly.

If Ottawa takes this deal then we know Murray was just trying to fleece Sather for our young stars and really wants Heatley out of the Eastern conference!

i dunno why but i havea feeling Chris Neil will be a Ranger. Despite Avery being here.

  97. if murray accepts penner, who is lazy, and will not help the sens at all, instead of rozy, zherdev, and a pick, thats crazy. penner is a lazy fat slob. murray has to be playin around just to try to get sather nervous and make him give up more. instead, sather will stay pat and sign cammalerri tommorow. or hossa. and then murray is stuck with penners larda$$!!

  98. Guys, get off the Heatley crap. Sather isn’t going to go after heatley unless it doesn’t include callahan, Dubi or stall. It’s possible sather might go after Hossa in the free agent market but I would think sather needs to get rid of another bad contract and the one that makes sense would be rozi’s.

  99. 1. Love the trade.
    2. Don’t give up Dubi unless we get Vinny.
    3. Keep Cally.
    4. DCloutier39, just asking, when Craig MacTavish was taking that final faceoff in ’94, did you have a problem with him?

  100. NYR

He’s a FA, i don’t know if he’d want to sign here. It would be awkward with Aves, and also with Dreary here, the guy he pretty much raped a few seasons ago.

  101. ORR: for the record- I hate Drury, and if we could’ve moved HIS $7 mill per year I’d be ecstatic, but for as bad as Gomez’s contract was, he was still our best offensive player

why was Gomez a bad fit? he had 70 points in 81 games his 1st season here when we actually had talent on the roster…last year he played with a roster that was only better than the Islanders (in the East) offensively…he was a playmaker, playing with a team that had minimal offensive instinct/talent compared to the rest of the NHL…did he have a down year? yeah, but a lot of that is attributed to the horrible roster Sather put together

people are so happy to get rid of Gomez’s contract, but you get an even WORSE return on the Drury/Redden/Rozsival contracts…REDDEN NEEDED TO GO

  102. Doodie machetto on

Tomg, I think that’s just posturing by Murray. If e says heatley is getting traded no matter what, teams will offer him less than a bag of pucks. No way can heatley go back to the Ottawa locker room. It would be like avery returning to Dallas. The team and especially the fans won’t want him around. Especially since heatley would be in the media everyday demanding a trade and probably halfassing it on the ice.

Heatley is getting traded, tonight. Whether it is here remains to be seen

  103. Heard somewhere on an Edmonton based site that the Heatley to Oilers rumor was unlikely

  104. BANJ – I was 10 when Craig MacTavish took that faceoff so I really didn’t know I should have a problem with it

  105. Doodie machetto ,
totally agree, I was stating that he isn’t going to the rangers, don’t see it happening.

  106. Does anyone think we got the cap room to make a trade with TB, not for Vinny but for Martin St. Louis?

  107. RICH

Blowmez was a give away machine. He made retarded passes, and just played dumb. He took idiotic hooking penalties, and just played dumb.

For the amount of money he’s making he should be doing a lot more than what he was doing. That’s all there is to it.

IN THE Jungle , ~~the mighty Jungle the lion sleeps to-nightttt~~~ la-deee deee dee dummm dum , a whingo whip a whingo whip!!!

Sather trading off Gomez is an OVIOUS SALARY DUMP ..fur sure and saying it gives the kids more of a chance is only his ploy so people don’t start picking at him for the lop sided deal here.

Vinney is comming Mike …WHo the Heck is gona be our #1 Center now? Heatley?? Nope , he plays wing..we Have a deal in works for Vinny and by giving up a $7 million contract for his is now a real posibiliy. Vinney is the real deal.

  109. Mister Delaware on

Wouldn’t Cammalleri make more sense (even with the size concerns)? Pure scorer and only costs money, I’m sure less than Heatley makes? Him plus Dubinsky has to be better than Heatley alone, no?

  110. Obviously, with the bringing in of more D’s, some organizational D’s are on the way out of town. My guess is Slats wants to peddle Rozy and Sangs, might accomodate by peddling Rozy and Sauer, who is further along than Sangs, right now. I cannot believe either of the two inspirational leaders on this team, Cally and Dubi, could even be considered for trade. That would backfire, horribly.

I do appreciate the club getting younger, with the Gomez trade. Now how about trading Redden for a can of Sprite?

  111. Scott Gomez being better than Drury and Redden doesn’t mean squat. He stunk up the joint and kept talking about how he knew what he had to do—then didn’t do it.

    ………………………………..

if the Rangers had a one-time free pass to drop any of those 3 contracts, are you seriously telling me Gomez would be the first to go before Drury and Redden provided the return you get for the money each of them make?

  112. ZzZz 13 ZzZz saga continues… says Greg L. ,
dude, vinny isn’t going anywhere, if he was the canadiens would have made the deal. Tampa bay isn’t trading vinny anywhere.

  113. I know Prucha was a restricted free agent with the Rangers, does that status transfer to Phoenix? I’m not holding my breath

  114. Ok, thanks for answering politely.
I appreciate that. We need civility on an exciting night like this!

  115. IMO I say go for Ochechkin Light in Atlanta. Yeah he didnt do much against us a couple of years ago but Atlanta tried to beat up the Rangers in that series and it didnt work. Dubinsky did pretty well with Jagr he might do even better with a younger\faster superstar.

  116. DCloutier39…. enough with the soap box, we’re not hear to debate the moral standings of players.

Did you root for Shanahan or Naslund while they were here? Shanahan stole a guy’s wife, that ruins a family. Naslund called Moore (the guy whose neck Bertuzzi broke) a crybaby and said he had no respect for him. D-bag, low class moves by both guys. Obviously not on par with costing a life but I’ll bet you rooted for them. Get off it.

  117. rich,
I agree, gomez was the only player out of the four that anybody wanted. Sather still has to figure a way of getting rid of the other three if the rangers are going to have a chance of getting to a cup finals.

  118. ORR WHAT ?!?!

    JAY G
Lol, can you imagine Komisarek, Avery, and Phaneuf all on NYR. Lol, they all dated or date Cuthbert. That would be a crazy locker room.

Imagine the tail hanging out in the locker room also?

We need to sign allstar Hossa. Khl allstar marcel hossa. He had a hat trick in the allstar game!

    SO STOP DEBATING IT!

“He stole a guy’s wife” – ha! I guess she had no say in the matter? please

  121. Blowmez was a give away machine. He made retarded passes, and just played dumb. He took idiotic hooking penalties, and just played dumb.

For the amount of money he’s making he should be doing a lot more than what he was doing. That’s all there is to it.

    ………………………

that’s fair, and I agree, but he looked pretty good his 1st year with us when there was actually some offensive talent on the roster…was he worth his salary? nope…but if Gomez “should be doing a lot more that what he was doing”, then what about Drury and Redden? compared to Gomez, what have THEY been doing?

my main complaint that if they were looking to free up cap space, the FIRST thing they should’ve done was waive Redden…Redden, Drury and Rozsival still make $18.5 million per year, and with that much cap space producing with such little results, this team will still be spinning its tires going nowhere

  122. Laurel Babcock on

Hey, CCCP, there may be no news and the poor guy, who I’m sure is plugged in, will be here for a while. Let him eat and say hi to his wife and kitties! Yes, all, Carp has kitties!

Prucha signed a two year extension in PHX at 1.1m/y
    *****************

Damn! How’d I miss that one? I guess work kept me from this site for too long.. Thank goodness for summer!

  124. I’d prefer they sign Gaborik to an incentive laden deal then deal away dubi or cally for heatly

  125. Doodie machetto on

Gomez is the best of the four, but that contract isstill awful. I thought rozsival was the most tradeable because of his contract

  126. laurel- yea heatleys gonna be an oiler anyhway. so hopefully we can get hoss tommorow or calamari

  127. If Vinny’s unavailable… any talk of either Marleau or Thornton being available? We NEED a top notch center!

  128. Thanks for the re-welcoming Carp! I’ve been too busy to be following no news!! But I’ll take time out of my day for something epic like this.

  129. Great move by Slats. Just when you think he is the biggest moron of a GM he pulls something like this out of the hat. I cant believe the return for a salary dump, #1 Defensive prospect out of MTL, a projected 1st pair guy over his career. Great, great move. Higgins seems to be a great addition as well.

As for Gomez…good riddance. Thanks for your time in the sweater, but glad to see you someplace else. It gives the NYR some flexibility to make some additional moves down the line. That is all we could ask for. FLEXIBILITY

Also, we all need to stop bemoaning the contracts of Drury and Redden. They are what they are. Drury will be here for good and will remain on the NYR for the duration of his deal. Redden we might be able to dump to the minors (if he really stinks next season) but other than that he is here for a long time as well. GET OVER THESE CONTRACTS PEOPLE!!

If Slats can somehow move Rozi then we have 2 of the 4 bad contracts gone and the option of dumping Redden in the minors. That should make any NYR fan smile from ear to ear.

Plus, we have all these Defensemen knocking at the door, we better make some room for them. Potter, Sauer, the new kid McDonough, Gilroy, Sangs, DZ in a year or so…if Redden could be dumped to make room and Rozi moved within the next year (I think it might take another season to usher out Rozi and Redden) I think we would be in FANTASTIC shape…just my opinion.

  130. why dont we just demote redden so we could trade for heatley and sign a sniper?

  131. I dont think the NYR will demote Redden in the off season. They will at least give him a half a season under Torts to see if he can turn it around.

  132. rich,

I agree, gomez was the only player out of the four that anybody wanted. Sather still has to figure a way of getting rid of the other three if the rangers are going to have a chance of getting to a cup finals.

    ……………………………………………..

exactly…I’m looking at it like this: we still have 3 toxic contracts (Drury/Redden/Rozsival) that handcuff us when it comes to the salary cap and stop us from being TRUE contenders, and we also just traded our best offensive player…so I’m supposed to be thrilled?

let’s be serious…Hossa wants too much money and isn’t coming here…you want Heatley at $7.5 mill per year with THIS roster and no playmakers? you want a fragile Gaborik? or do we still have pipe dreams of a Vinny L trade not involving Staal, Dubi, etc. going the other way? I know Gomez as our best playmaker isn’t saying a ton, but all I’m saying is that NYR fans are too quick to dismiss him

although I will say if we waived Redden in addition to trading Gomez I’d be way more optimistic, especially since the Drury/Rozsival contracts would only be for $12 mill per year and only last 3 more years

  133. well, judging from the comments from Sather and them having Higgens on the conference call, he probably isn’t going anywhere- I was hoping he could sub in for Cally in a deal, hopefully he doesn’t put Cally in that deal-

Guys who know Higgens, is he a Cally type of player?

I’m with you guys now- with no gomez please don’t deal dubi, cally, or staal-

  134. People stop with the Gaborik talk with one-year incentive laden contracts. The guy is an UFA. He can go wherever he wants and there are plenty of teams interested in his services. It makes no sense from his standpoint to sign a one-year deal (especially given his health in recent seasons, he’s going to want security). This guy isnt an aging vet or an up and coming prospect, he’s a bonafide star in the NHL…he’s not going to go for incentive laden contracts.

  135. Akeson reporting on Blueshirt Bulletin that Heatley to NYR being finalized right now and that Dubi is most likely part of package!

  136. bull dog line on

a couple of reports out there are saying that if heatly is coming to the rangers, Dubi is part of it. not happy about that.

  137. A source has been told that Dany Heatley will be a Ranger before midnight tonight. The Gomez deal has apparently freed enough cap space for the move to be made.

Rick Carpinello has also reported the Heatley deal to be done.

The source stated that Brandon Dubinsky was involved in the deal though that remains to be seen now that Gomez has gone.

Dubinsky, an RFA, was tendered a qualifying offer.

Steve Zipay of Newsday has also heard Dubinsky’s name as part of the Heatley deal.

I have a hard time believing that only because it begs the question: what’s the point of wingers without top centers?

With the movement of Gomez, Dubinsky and Chris Drury instantly become your top two centers.

Artem Anisimov and perhaps a player like Lauri Korpikoski (a natural center) could fill the third and fourth lines. Or Blair Betts could be re-signed, though it’s an outside chance.

    More as it develops…

  138. Reggie Dunlop on

Could be the best trade Sather has made since bringing Avery over the first time.

  139. I just read that for a period of time, Higgins had the ‘A’ in MTL too. Koivu obviously had the ‘C’. Not a bad character guy to have around with all of the younger guys.

The MTL boards are going crazy over this deal. Definitely brings a smile to my face to read someone else’s fan base p*ssed off, especially MTL.

  140. I like this trade as it gives Sather so many more options. He does not need to make a trade, just to bring in a top player here. He now has the option to sign an UFA.

    LGR

  141. Settle down, CCCP. I’m working it.

DCloutier, this will be my last word. I’m not saying you have to feel one way or another about Heatley. I just don’t want it to become a string of bad, tasteless jokes.

I don’t think the Rangers are ready to eat all that Redden money for no return … unless they have to.

  142. UESBlueshirt on

Does Ottawa really need Dubi? I figure they have Spezza. I think if anything bringing in Higgins could be enough insurance if they trade Cally.

  143. how can we win anything when people don’t stay here long enough to really jell together?? Constant movement of players and addition of wrong parts is what killing this franchise. Sather is getting away with murder year after year!

  144. ZzZz 13 ZzZz saga continues... says Greg L. on

Montreal couldn’t land Vinney cuz the Habs Suck!!

  145. Fly Line,

Higgins is a lot like Callahan, just 2 years older. In my opinion, i think he has better offensive upside than Cally.

  146. sather straight up hustled gainey. i think with just that kid mcdonagh’s potential and them taking one of our horrible contracts we won. let alone getting higgings too. i think sather did a damn good job here for sure. what i am scared of tho is what he does next….lets not piss away the cap space we just got back ya know?

  147. If Dubi is going to OTT then Rozi HAS TO BE GOING AS WELL. Without Rozi being moved, then we are in the same spot as we were before Gomez was moved. 4 big long term contracts (the addition of Heatley replacing Gomez’s deal).

come on sather, dont get dumped on all of a sudden b/c you have cap space due to the Gomez trade. stick it to OTT and get the terms right for this “supposed” deal.

Spot on post JCL206…one of the best ones I have read here all afternoon.

  148. I would be very pissed if Sather got rid of dubi but i don’t believe he would. I can see him trading callahan since he got higgins who is a similar player.

  149. UESBlueshirt on

Right CCCP, ever year post lockout there’s been some major turnover.

    06/07- Shanny and Cullen
    07/08 – Drury and Gomez
    08/09 – Jagr/Shanny/Straka gone, Redden/Zherdev/Naslund in

Look at the teams that made it far into the playoffs, a lot of them have had the same nucleus for at least the past 2-3 years.

  150. I say get rid of rozi and sign hossa, that is the way to go. If sather did that than I would take back some of my criticism towards him, lol.

  151. So let me get this straight; Rangers already traded Gomez and Pyatt and now they only have four center left. If they did trade a center, then who is gonna play center for the Rangers this year? Robert Lang?!!!!

  152. UESBlueshirt…
Agreed. Moreso why we can’t trade Cally/Dubi/Staal… THAT’S our nucleus. I don’t mind getting players to complement them… trading is ok, as long as you keep the core together.

  153. KingLundqvist30 June 30th, 2009 at 7:05 pm

I hear one of the provisions of the Rangers landing Hossa is to also bring back Marcel Hossa…

    ———————————————

That was the funniest thing I’ve read on here haha loved it…

Rangers traded for Vinny Lecavalier, then trade him to Montreal for Scott Gomez so Montreal gets who they want since they gave us their top prospect

  154. UESBlueshirt on

There’s no guarantee that Hossa wants to sign here. Or Gaborik for that matter.

    …………………………………………….

exactly…Rangers fans have seen Sather’s work for almost 10 years now…and they think this move is “genius” and will lead to even more moves of “genius” this summer by Sather…unreal

stone hands Drury or a rookie centering Mr. $7.5 Mill Heatley next year…yeah that’s brilliant

if you’re just gonna replace Gomez’s $7 mill with Heatley’s $7.5 mill, why not just keep Gomez, WAIVE REDDEN and his $6.5 mill, and then bring in Heatley to play with Gomez? nah Slats knows what he’s doing!

  156. UESBlueshirt on

Mike, as much as I don’t want to see Dubi or Cally traded the reality is that at least one of them would have to be moved. And honestly the Heatley is an upgrade in talent over either of them. Look at the East and you’ll see the top competitors have core players that are much better than Dubi and Cally.

  157. Higgins has been injury prone the past 2 seasons. and he is NOT an all out hustler like Cally. he is bigger and has good hands and can score, but he is NOT like Cally in the all-out hustle dept

giving up Cally would be idiotic. period.

  158. damnit, i hope tomorrow is contact lens day at work so I can keep up with all the anticapted excitement of July 1!! It’d really suck if I knew nothing until 6pm cst!!

You guys are the best, just caught up with your posts on the last 2 topics…Damn the Billy Mays thing was just so wrong on so many levels, but really funny!!

  159. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

Great trade for Sather. Higgins is someone I’ve always liked as a player. He can score 20+ goals a year and to all you Betts fans, he is an excellent penalty killer. If we don’t trade Cally( hopefully)he and Higgins will light it up on the penalty kill! This McDunough kid is an outright Steal!!!!!. I wanted us to draft him in ’07. He may be signed in time for camp and may make the team if there is enough room.

I hope we don’t get Heatly if it means trading Dubi or Cally. I would rather get a ufa.

Just remeber one thing about Sather. Sather giveth and Sather taketh away. So hold on to your hats because we will soon find out how mucheth.

  160. “If Dubi is going to OTT then Rozi HAS TO BE GOING AS WELL. Without Rozi being moved, then we are in the same spot as we were before Gomez was moved. 4 big long term contracts (the addition of Heatley replacing Gomez’s deal).”

You are correct. I crunched the numbers yesterday and we pay 6 players well over half the cap, leaving an average of $1.6million TO SPREAD OUT PER PLAYER FOR THE 16 OTHER PLAYERS! SAME PROBLEM.

  161. Cloutier-
I don’t think it’s really up to you or anyone else here to forgive Heatley for what happened in the past.
And if you think it is up to you, what you need to get over is yourself.
