Here’s the official info on the pick

Before I post it, I want to tell you Boneheads that you rock. More than 500 comments during the first round.

Here is the official release from the NYR:

Phillips Academy Andover Forward Chosen 19th Overall

New York, June 26, 2009 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has selected forward Chris Kreider with the 19th overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Kreider, 18, skated in 26 games with Phillips Academy, Andover of the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association (HS-MA), registering 33 goals and 23 assists for 56 points, along with 10 penalty minutes. He led Andover in goals (33), assists (23) and points (56). He also finished sixth among all high school players in point per game average, scoring at a rate of 2.15 points per game. The 6-2, 205-pounder entered the 2009 NHL Entry Draft as the highest ranked high school player, and 14th overall among North American Skaters, according to the final Central Scouting Rankings.

Update from Jane: Got off the phone with Kreider and want to clear up some bios, which say he is Boston College-bound in 2010. He’s moved it up to this fall after getting advice from a lot of people saying that he should play at a higher level sooner.

It was a long crazy day, but Kreider said he’s excited to come to New York.

“I’m just on cloud nine,” Kreider said. “I’ve been told it’s the greatest city in the world. I’ve never been there but I’m looking forward to it. I have a lot of friends who are Rangers fans.”

  1. So what is the chance that we have a player actually score more than 30 goals next season?

  2. Doodie Machetto on

Bowman mentioned the players he coached. It ended up sounding a lot worse because there was only one that he hadn’t coached.

  3. Doodie Machetto on

Thank god Pittsburgh didn’t get Ashton. The last thing we need them to have is a winger who can bury Crosby and Malkin’s passes.

  4. did anyone just see when the camera panned to the Penguins table and you could see Sather at the Ranger table, looking like he was asleep and chewing on a cigar

  5. i saw it jcl. i saw the look of a man who doesnt know where he is or what team he represents. i dont think he knows he picked yet. he was lookin at his paperwork thinkin to himself, ducheman or tavahead?

  6. Are these things ever anything but “Shoot and hope”? No.

I don’t think we’ll know what Sather did (or how bad he screwed up) until we see this kid in a Rangers sweater (or until Jacob Josepson scores 40 goals).

  7. lol riche. were so optimistic here arent we? lol were already callin it lol. gimme a B!!! gimme a U!!! gimme an S!!!!! gimme a T!!!!! whats that spell? gomedruvalevareddajessibrendlozival!!!!

  8. Carp, any news on the Heatley talks? Would love to know what the asking price from Ottowa currently is and where Sather is-

  9. did anyone else notice Sather was one of only two GMs nto to get interviewd?

Know who the other one was? Lamoriello!

    i still hate sather

    good ngiht all

  10. Dr. Ogrodnick on

    Chris F.

I like the pick; size, speed, hard accurate shot, supposedly a character guy, the tools are all there. Projected as a scoring winger which the Rangers desperately need in the system. Personally I like it as I’ll be able to catch him live at BC. Plus Sather hasn’t done anything stupid yet, so that’s a bonus.

  11. Kreider was Sathers second option as Kulikov was taken, he wears Reebok see thru jock straps wet and I vasoline it.

  12. Dr. Ogrodnick on

As Kulikov kept dropping I totally envisioned Sather taking him. Thank you Panthers.

  13. WTF was Bowman’s deal? He congratulated everyone except Brian Leetch. I want a public apology from him.

  14. According the Versus, Chris Kreider was the fastest player in this draft. Does this mean Sather’s going with speed? Or is he still trying to be a “rough, and tough” team

  15. Matt K…the 3 other hall of fame inductees played for Detroit, thus he congratulated them.

  16. Senators GM Bryan Murray did all he could to trade the disgruntled Heatley – a move the sniper requested last month. To make it happen, Murray is looking for a package that includes more than what Anaheim received for Pronger.

“I just watched one of the other trades take place and I think there’s a better offer needed,” he said. “I’ve made a couple of requests, I think I’ve been quite fair really. I know I can’t get a match for Dany Heatley, I know that for a fact.

“But I want to get some fair value.”

very glad we didnt trade for him. let them get desperate.
could you imagine what this guy was askin for from sather?

  17. i just realized that San Jose had no picks in the first round and only have 4 picks this year

    2 picks in round 2, 1 in round 5, and 1 in round 7.

maybe we can package some of our picks (we still have 7 more remaining), and try and get 1 of those 2nd rounders off of them

im thinking our 3rd rounder, and 2 of 3 in round 5 we have for a 2nd rounder of theirs

  18. I like the pick. The Devils wanted him and MacGuire loved it so you know that’s a positive. He’s not Rico Fata because he’s already as big as Dubi and AA and is only 18.

Very shocked Chicken Parm Jr. is still around.

Possibilities for round 2: Drew Shore, Zach Buddish, Tony Rajala, Landon Ferraro, Igor Bobkov, Matt Hackett, Alexander Avstyn, Anton Burdasov.

  19. Kreider is a good pick. Very hard worker. Been following him for a couple years up here in the Andover, MA.

Played against extremely weak competition at his first high school then transfered to Philips.

Philips is in the top-tier for high school hockey in New England but still pales in comparison to all Canadian Juniors and Euro leagues.

I was thinking the B’s would nab him as they like to draft local kids sometimes, especially with Kreider playing at BC this fall they could keep tabs on him.

    Great speed and size

  20. Matt

It’s not just his combination of size, skating and skill that makes him a great pick. Every scouting report I’ve read talks about the kid’s hockey sense, awareness, his vision and his anticipation. This kid is the anti-Jessiman. Jessiman had no feel for the game. This is a very smart player. He’ll spend two years at BC and hit Hartford the year after…which is the way every Ranger prospect not named Staal has done it. Carter Ashton? Please…DID NOT WANT…now go get Jeremy Morin, please.

  21. I don’t see the rangers getting Heatley. In order for the rangers to make any deals they would have to get rid of either
Gomez, Drury, redden or Rosival’s contract. I also read that Murray’s asking price is delusional. Murray gave Sather a few trade scenarios and every one had Stall in it. This trade isn’t happening. I don’t see any trades happening unless Sather can dump salary.

  22. Know it’s not happening but would love to see Rangers find a way to get Landon Ferraro early Saturday. Wake up Sather!

  23. onecupin69years and counting on

So they drafted a high schooler, another prep school bust like jessiman, why not a kid from the juniors?

  24. onecupin69years and counting on

I wonder if sather made any attempt to move up in the draft?

  25. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

If you watch the interview with Sather and Clark,it is obvious that they believe he is an elite talent. I also would not at all be surprised if he does well at B.C.,that he is either sugned for the stretch run or for 2010-11. He certainly has the size and speed. There are still several good quality players that are available. I counted at least 10-12 that I’d be happy with. just don’t want to see a goalie until at least the 5th round. This team needs wingers badly who can score.

As for Heatley, Murray must ne smoking something if he thinks antone else will give him anything remotly close to what the Ducks got for Pronger. I still can’t believe the Flyers made that deal for a 35 year old dman on the downside of his career with only one year left on his contract, simply astounding!

Jay Bouwmeester’s days in Florida are over.

The Panthers have traded the 25-year-old star defenceman’s rights to the Calgary Flames for blueliner Jordan Leopold and a third round pick.

  27. According to TSN Darren Dreger (on twitter) he believes the Rangers will again take a run at Heatley today.

  28. According to Zipay, Sather wouldnt include Staal in deal for heatley and that was the sticking point. Sather seen having long talks with Burke and Canes Rutherford today..Maybe hes looking for someone to dump Rosi on before he heads back for another run at heatley

  29. Carp, Jane & Laurel you rock! Thanks for the best Rangers blog on the planet. I am as excited about Chris as when the Rangers selected Leetch. He has a similar rep. I was very skeptical when Leetch was selected from HS but optimistic but look how that turned out. The fact That Kreider is from such a similar circumstance and selected so soon after Brian’s HOF selection is uncanny. I will try to keep my enthusiasm bridled. I am just excited to get a extremely fast skater who seems to have more scoring skills than Rico Fata.
