(early) Happy Anniversary

107

Just wanted to give you a heads-up that MSG Network will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Rangers’ 1994 Stanley Cup tomorrow.

Here’s part of the release I received from the network:

MSG to Telecast Games 2, 3, 4, and 7 of 1994 Stanley Cup Finals.

New York, NY, June 12, 2009 – To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the 1994 Stanley Cup champion New York Rangers, MSG Network will devote10 hours of programming on the exact day, 15 years later, that the Rangers hoisted the Stanley Cup.  Beginning at 1pm on Sunday, June 14th, MSG will telecast Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals from 1994 between the Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks.  The evening will end with Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals, and will include the post-game celebration.

The schedule is:
1pm – Game 2, 1994 Stanley Cup Finals
3pm – Game 3, 1994 Stanley Cup Finals
5pm – Game 4, 1994 Stanley Cup Finals
7pm – Special hour-long edition of “Hockey Night Live”
8pm – Game 7, 1994 Stanley Cup Finals
In the hour-long, and final edition of “Hockey Night Live” for the season, host Al Trautwig, and hockey analysts Ron Duguay, Ken Daneyko and Butch Goring, will dissect the Stanley Cup Finals, discuss the upcoming NHL draft, and reminisce about the 15 year anniversary of the Rangers last Stanley Cup victory.

—————–

Today, June 13, is the 15th anniversary of Mike Keenan’s near meltdown. Remember, he was negotiating with the Red Wings at the time, and he wanted to take the team to Lake Placid for a mini-training camp between Games 6 and 7, and had to be talked out of it, and then Colin Campbell and Dick Todd put in the forechecking strategy for Game 7.

And the anniversary of Glenn Healy’s great line: “Ninety percent of New York has already dialed the 9 and the 1 and is just waiting to hit the other 1.”

In 15 years from now they will still be reminiscing about the cup in 94.

  2. Hossa played like a stupid piece of **** last night. He had four wide open shots on the side of the net, if he didn’t over skate the puck, and every time he looks for the fancy play. He doesn’t know how to play simple and gritty.

  3. Nathan LaFayette-He came to the Rangers and was part of that horrible Norstrom/Ferraro/Laperreire to LA deal that pretty much was step 2 in killing the franchise from 98-04.

OneCup-I know. I’m FOREVER grateful for 94 but there comes a point when you gotta chill with all the 94 stuff already and put in in the cellar an only bring it out for 20th, 25th Anniversaries, etc.

  4. I enjoyed the 1994 Cup run as much as the next Rangers fan, but it’s time to move on. It’s time to start focusing on how to win us the next Cup. Yearly celebration of that Cup doesn’t make it any easier for us to watch our division rivals hoist it year after year while we continue to mire in mediocrity.

  5. onecupin69years and counting on

the 94 celebration is like the dumb Yankee classics on Yes ,May 09 game against the angels is a classic,Dumb!!!

It is time to move on.. win a cup this decade already.

Ha Ha……….from a good source, it was Mess and Kevin Lowe who talked Mad Mike into going home and NOT lake placid…….

  7. Im sorry, but at this point i really don’t give two sh*t’s aboot 94. It was so many fuggin years ago, at this point, watching it just makes me feel like less of a fan, with the way things are now.

MSG needs to forget 94, and all Ranger fans should as well. Maybe it’s just cause i wasn’t a fan in 94, rightfully so, i was to busy watching the X-men, and Spiderman cartoon. Great cartoons. But even so, it;s just annoying.

  8. 1994 is a great memory, but I was 10. We also had a great team, not just select individuals. We also had a smart GM (minus the Zubov trade).

The NHL was a better game back then.

  9. Especially with that 1994 DVD set, I’d love to see them put out more like that. Maybe we could get a 1979 set, or maybe just one featuring all the times we beat the Devils in the playoffs haha.

  10. Buck, would you trade the current GM for Neil Smith right now?

The Gartner trade was demanded by Keenan.

By the way, guys, I told you I’m in Binghamton, but I didn’t tell you I’m with Josh Thomson (age 26). Say Hi Josh.

    Josh says Hi.

matt- hossa played like zherdev. instead of stoppin in front of the net, he skated right by it, and missed a great oppurtunity to put one in. probably wouldve gotten momentum for the wings and 90% chance they win the cup. reminded me so much of zherdev on that play and many others. but zherdev is 24 and never played in the playoffs till now, hossa should have the balls to take some punishment in game 7 of the cup finals to make a good play and maybe score. still, after watchin that it makes the idea of havin zherdev back more unappealing. i hope if he does come back he plays like cally. hes gotta realize hes not in europe playin perimeter style fancy nancy hockey.

  12. I dunno if this has been mentioned, but has anyone checked out Cindy’s facial hair? He looks like a 13 year old trying to grow out his first beard. Imagine how good he’ll be when he hits puberty.

  13. id trade him for smith right now. but at this point, either way, its gonna take a long time in hockey terms till we get a good enough team to win. we are not winning while drury, gomez or redden are still here. we just have to keep drafting good. no trading draft picks for b players anymore. the more picks we have, the better chance we have to get a great player out of it. just think if we had traded last years 3rd round pick for some marginal player, we wouldnt have gotten grachev.

  14. chuck- hes a punk. he didnt do the handshake last night. babcock was tryin to congratulate him and he just skated off. hes a nancy boy. this whole thing kinda seemed set up. the way they played(both teams), the way the celebrated, it just didnt seem real.how is it, that detroit absolutely had their way with them in game 5, totally b slapped the pens all night, scoring at will, and then they play like crap last night? didnt look like they gave it their all imo

  15. Buttman was booed by Detroit crowd last night! Someone should’ve throw something hard and heavy at his stupid face.

  16. Smith was a great GM from 89-94 (with the exception of the Cirella for Aaron Miller trade) but everything he did post 94 was bad; the Zubov trade, the infamous LA trade I mentioned earlier, and eve the Verbeek trade where that 1st rounder became JS Giguere. It’s like he had some other factor forcing him to make bad decisions.

The funny thing is that the Isles fans who rightfully love Okposo …Smith drafted him!

By the way, if you wanna find a mid to late round gem in the draft here ya go:
    http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/11260/top10_russia_prospects_for2009/

I know I seems obsessed with Russian players on this board (I’m not even Russian!) but you have to play to your strengths and the Rangers having more money, Brighton Beach, close to the Atlantic Ocean, and not afraid of this transfer agreement stuff, that is a strength.

  17. “I know I seems obsessed with Russian players on this board (I’m not even Russian!)”

its ok Mike…nobody is perfect! :)

“i’m going to go sign with the Rangers and get paid 9 million a year to under achieve. me, scott gomez and chris drury are going to rob NY dry!”

  19. He did it, but he really didn’t listen to what Babcock said. It was like…

    Babcock: You showed great leadership

And when Babdick was in the middle of saying ship, he said thanks, and didn’t even look interested in what he had to say.

Pretty classless, you’d think he’d be in a good mood since his 4th liners just won him the Cup, but he’s nothing but a Crysbaby.

Hopefully that knee injury ruins his career, and turns him into a 4th liner !! Mwahahahahaha, eeeeevil !!! But fun to think aboot in these depressing times of summer.

Even if the Rangers win another stanley cup or 3 or 4 in the next 10 years……the 94 cup will always be celebrated. Its not about moving on from it, that is the most important cup the Rangers will ever win. They had a great team and broke a 54 year curse. There is nothing wrong with celebrating that by watching the games again every June 14.

  21. Game 7 – pens win

Game 6 we counted at least 5-6 flagrant non-calls on the pens (same in 3)

Just so we can all see how a team is manufactured by the league — let’s look a the Penguins Draft history from 2003-2006:

    2003 – 1st Pick Marc-Andre Fleury
    2004 – 2nd Pick = Malkin
2005 – 1st Pick – Sidney “crybaby” Crosby (note: this was a hidden ballet unwitnessed by any media or 3rd party)
    2006 – 2nd Pick – Jordon Staal

hmm- the 1st or 2nd overall pick for 4 straight years?
combine that with some suspect officiating … and voila you have a marketing product ..

FU Gary – you are now losing your hard core fans

good job richtersgirl. i can watch that 94 cup run anytime. it may get old but its still awesome to watch and relive during times where our current team is one of the lowest scoring, mediocre teams right now. thanks glen!!

  24. septemous, you, me and pavel should blow this conspiracy wide open. lets expose the conspirators!!! even babcock joked in one of his pressers when the series first started that if you watch the commercials from the finals last season you wouldve thought the wings had lost and the pens had won it. babcocks comments at the start of the series and the end of it sounded like he wasnt real intense about it. very nonchalant.

  25. Wings played like retards, but to be fair, they did get screwed in that game. Talbot’s 2nd goal shouldn’t have counted, i forgot what exactly happened, but i think that retard Sloth looking idiot Malkin did something that should have been a penalty, and it wasn’t called, and then Talbot scores seconds later.

The refs were horrible as, always. Crybaby jumps on someone’s back, and it’s not holding ?? Yeah, great job.

Sometimes i wish the ghost of Jeffrey Dahmer would visit these refs and have some fun with their bodies.

    RICHGIRL

I don’t judge anyone who still enjoys that Cup run, and like i said, maybe it’s because i wasn’t a fan of the team at the time. It might just annoy me on some level that i wasn’t a part of that year, and im really dying to be a part of a Nyr Stanley Cup winning year. But i used to watch the tapes my dad had from that year, and obviously all of the MSG replays, but now im over it, and with the way Nyr has been pissing me off, i just cant stand watching anything Ranger related, unless it’s violent, like that special the other night.

  26. I remember the 94 Cup run like it was yesterday, and I was 10. It was a great time, and I think if we were a perennial contender like Detroit or even, ugh, NJ, where we have won Cups since, it wouldn’t be as bad to watch because we could just savor in the amazing story and cast of characters and the dramic fashion it was won in. Instead, our team has been an abomination since, only recently becoming mediocre. It seems pathetic now to harp on 1994 because there haven’t been many good memories since. It’s long overdue to write some new good history

  27. Talbot: Selected by Pittsburgh Penguins round 8 #234 overall 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

He’s no superstar, but I am happy that he got to be the hero, instead of Cindy.

  28. Yeah Joe, I get pissed at my friends who think I’m crazy when I say realistically, the Rangers can win 3 more Cups in my lifetime (I’m 28). I’ll forever be grateful for 94 but it’s time to move on. It’s almost an insult to the fanbase to keep ramming it down our throats. We’re smarter than that. We deserve better. This franchise has first class everything; fans, building, marketing, and even the players who have come through here. The only think that has not been first class is management.

  29. 94 will always be special. however like some have you have said lets move on and focus how we could get to a cup final first. like ORR AND MIKE IN IA HAVE SAID with this current group we will do nothing but suffer. we are so far from this happening anytime soon.

  30. eric, that’s why people who remember 94 don’t want to let go of it … especially those who spent part or all of the 54 years waiting for it. because now it’s one for 69, and counting.

  31. josh
yeah your right but i am so sick of being a team that looks like it has no hope anytime soon. watching the pens and seeing what we have tells me it could be one cup in 80 years at this rate.

its tough being a season tix holder knowing u are seeing the 3 worst contracts in hockey every night. gomez drury redden. i will never give up my seats because hockey to me is an addiction and a passion.

  32. “It’s almost an insult to the fanbase to keep ramming it down our throats. We’re smarter than that. We deserve better”

Perfectly said, i couldn’t have said it better myself, unless there was a Fox analogy thrown in. But you’re absolutely right, it’s like they’re trying to calm us down, and make sure we don’t go nuts and go against them, and kill them or something.

I enjoyed the games, and highlights long enough, i want a fuggin Cup god damn it ! NOW !

But that wont happen. Id much rather have Nyr suck net season so they can get 1st overall.

  33. Speed Ranger on

First Eric, now Jordan…. the next Staal brother to win the cup? MARC – of course! It’s a good sign.

  34. How about if we all write to MSG Networks and let them know how we feel about this never ending ’94 Cup celebration?

  35. hey colin- was reading some news about heatley and it seems that if he isnt traded by july 1st, the sens are on the hook to pay him a 4m dollar bonus. murray was gonna trade him at the draft, but any team that he trades to, has to pay the bonus. so now he might have to settle for less if he doesnt wanna pay that money. looks good for any team who would rather pay money than give up more assets or picks. im sure hes still gonna get some good players or picks in return, but if the rangers wanna get him, maybe they wont have to give up as much as before

  36. jjp- yea im sure nbc tried their best to cover the whole crosby thing up, but im glad draper said somethin. hes an ungrateful kid that has the benefit of playing on a team that gets preferential treatment from the league and like someone else said before, got 4 straight years of getting #1 ansd #2 draft picks. the fans shouldnt be very proud after they gave up on the team and didnt support them because they sucked.

  37. mike in ia
i think it would kinda be like the yashin trade
or something like 2 players and a pick

i would love to have him on the team but your going to have to give up a kid (with potential), a vet (hopefully large contract) and a pick this draft.

    headin to warren 77.
this ferry smells so ripe tonight.

  38. maybe its me…

but for real when you guys feel like showin up here ill make sure we all get the vip treatment, hahahah

  39. ZzZz 13 ZzZz saga continues... !! says Greg L. on

I dont care that Crosby won it , just the penguins being lead by a 20 year old and playing a simular defensive system …how can you guys say were so far off when all it takes is a hot Fluery and few good games from Malkin and having Talbot was more important than not having Hossa.

You guys think we are so far off…Carp included , should look at the penguins and if they can do , I KNOW WE CAN !!!

  40. RichtersGirl – Well said. That was an amazing year to be a Ranger fan, and given this franchise is all about tradition(or at least they claim to be), it’s only fitting that they fondly recall the team’s most exciting playoff run. And one of the most exciting playoff runs in cup history. Despite how good the Rangers were that year, the series against Vancouver was anything but a forgone conclusion…and best of all, they won that cup WITHOUT THE HELP OF BUTTMAN.

mike in ia – I’ve read the same thing about Heatley’s contract. And I do think he’ll go cheaper than he would have two weeks ago, when the entire league DIDN’T know about his trade demand. Still, I think any deal for Heatley is going to involve one future star player, a top-flight prospect and a first rounder. That’s the base line right there.

The rumor about Pronger that continues to circulate coupled with Heatley’s urge to go west gives me pause to wonder whether they’re making a push for him. Ducks move Pronger for Johnson and picks. Then move those picks and Bobby Ryan to Ottawa for Heatley. Imaging a first line of Perry-Getzlaf-Heatley. That’s just wrong…

  41. Why is everyone complaining aboot her toe thumb ? I don’t give a fugg if she had a neon green thumb with a Flyers tat on the tip, i still want a piece of that pie.

    Fox rules !

  42. onecupin69years and counting on

Regarding Crosby’s snub at the handshake line, the only thing worse than a sore loser is a sore winner, spoiled brat, created by the NHL and Bettman, this is the young cry baby the NHL wants to represent their sport?
I hope he gets his ass handed to him next year, he isn’t making friends amongst the players, payback’s a bitch.

  43. ryan was pretty good this year and in the playoffs. hes finally emerging as a top player in the league. he was so overshadowed by crosby in that draft that ya never heard anything about him. it was all crosby. yea maybe hes not as good, but he will be great for the ducks or any team he plays for. big, strong, power forward that can score. we had jessiman, they got ryan. i really hope sather doesnt trade our #1 pick just to get rid of redden or gomez this summer. we cant have that much bad luck in the draft.

  44. I still have this weird Spider Sense feeling Heatley’s going to San Jose; that team has to do something drastic as the fanbase and management is getting ready to tar and feather the personnel. It might be good for our buddy Rozi too cause if the Sharks give up any of their D prospects and let Blake walk, they’ll need a guy to play a lotta minutes.

Interesting enough; I read Nick Fotiu’s answers to the fans on the Rangers website and he said he’d like them to get Chechoo whom he coached. Not that he has a lot of pull in the Rangers organization, but interesting nonetheless.

  45. CARP

Id be the biggest fakest Flowers fan of all time. Id buy the bootleg Richards jersey, that i bought at a Philly flea market, and id secretly watch Ranger games in the underground secret basement in the mansion of my super hot toe thumb gf !

    Sounds like a fun life.

  46. ur crazy orr!! id do it too!!! i could care less about the so called toe thumb which ive never heard that expression before, and yea, it is stubby looking, but thats nitpicking to almost the point of one of those fruitcakes on the E channel

  47. colin- wasnt talkin about you . im talkin about the people who go out of their way to point out any flaw a person has, no matter how stupid.

  48. Exactly. She’s so unbelievably hot from head to toe, and that’s the bottom toe, not the toe thumb. Who cares about the thing.

No reason to hate her for it, unless you wanna challenge her in thumb wrestling, then should have an unfair advantage. But who wants to thumb wrestle with a chick ? I wanna do some other physical contact with her, mwahaha !

I heard she’s still dating that loser has been from 90210, ugh, i thought she dumped that idiot. Ugh, it makes me sick, how can he get a chick like that, she’s so far out of his league. Damn it !!!

  49. Luke Perry’s not a bad actor. I like how he tried to comeback for that misunderstood John From Cincinnati show on HBO.

Was it him who did all the hockey charity work or was it Jason Priestly?

  50. jason preistly did im sure. idk about luke, but jason was a hockey fan, and pretty sure a ranger fan

  51. I guess MSG knows we’ll never do it again, so they have to keep milking 1994. It’s great to see but enough of the rehashing already, as if it happened last year. It’s embarrassing.

  52. mike in ia

    its all good
i was talking with some people at the bar and it just happen to come up
i couldnt remember who spoke about her here.

god i really couldnt believe those yelp reviews.
    maybe its just me…

  53. Lol, no it wasn’t Luke, or Jason, it was the loser David Silver. Ughhhghhghhghghh, Brian Austin Green, to his credit has a nice list of ex gf’s like Tiffany Amber Thiessen, from Saved by the Bell, and 90210, and Alyssa Milano who has been hot for so many fuggin years. But this is different, he’s older, he’s more of a has been, he isn’t a big actor, and only has a role in that garbage show Terminator Sarah Conner Chronicles. He doesn’t deserve the Fox.

Im sure Fox can get some surgery to get that thumb fixed. But either way it’s no big deal.

BTW – John From Cincinnati was a damn good show. Fugg HBO for canceling it, it was hard to understand, but it was enjoyable. Oh well, True Blood tonight, yipee !!!

  54. acdavic- only real news concerning the rangers is that they started talks with doobys agent and not sure about cally , but i dont think they have yet. oh and were screwed(cap wise), like pavel said. the money that we saved from naz is only about 1.5m now because the cap is gonna go down or some other reason, not sure

    SEAN AVERY NONSEQUITOR

I have a Google alert set up for Sean Avery (among other things). Almost every day something comes through — but more often than not, it’s from a Dallas-area paper or it’s a Stars article. Funny that they can’t get over him.

  56. Does everyone remember how much we hated Momesso??? I watch these games today and forgot how the game used to be played.
These young guys today would never be able to win 16 games the way they played in the playoffs before the rule changes. It’s incredible. If you watched game 7 the other night and put it up against any of the 3 games we saw today – it’s not even close physically! These guys could almost kill each other before a penalty was called!

  57. toe thumb!! lol that is the funniest thing ive seen in a while! Nothing will break Orr’s love for Megan! not even if it was a camel toe thumb!

For me personally, she aint all that… I’ve had better. :)

  58. I’ll never get tired of 94 still brings a ear to my eye. After watching Mess play I think Dubbi should be our captain.

  59. “brings a ear to my eye.”

you see people what ’94 does to people? ear in the eye!! JohnR how do you do it man? :P

  60. Would love to see the media criticize Crosby for his classless behavior at the handshake line. Of course Crosby said it’s the Red Wings fault for not waiting for him to finish celebrating. If Ovechkin had acted like that, what would the Canadian press be saying?

  61. Still get chills watching those last few minutes of Game 7. I know we beat 1994 to death. But it meant so much to so many people.

It also gives me nightmares because our current team is eons away from matching the talent and toughness of that team.

  62. Good point kc

Don Cherry would probably popped his own cherry yelling how classless and gutless those russkis are by disrespecting the tradition! I just hope that it was Cindys last Cup.

  63. That last period was so nerve wrecking. Beuk was out and I remember praying that Leetch and Lidster could get the job done. I always liked Lidster, he didn’t play much in 94 but was HUGE in the playoffs.

I had an English final the next morning and couldn’t fully enjoy 94. The teacher gave anyone who wrote about the Rangers an instant -15 off when the question was ‘Write about something that was important to you in your life and how it affected you.” A lot of people got a C because of the “penalty.”

  64. Pretty cool stuff watching that third period of Game 7 and the celebration later. Brings back a lot of memories.

I, for one, am really pissed off at Sidney Crosby for skipping the handshakes. It wasn’t even like he had a grudge or anything. He just was too busy to be bothered. Very, totally, classless. Mario Lemieux should spend the next month lecturing him about it at home. Of course that will never happen, because the Kid is allowed to do whatever he wants, and you guys are right, the Canadian media will let him have a free pass.

    New post.

  65. Was your teacher a dirty Islander fan?

I definately still get ears in my eye too JohnR.
