Those of you who describe Kallinin's play early on in the season as dreadful were absolutely right. In fact there were many games that he should have been awarded assists on the opponent's goals, because he frequently passed off directly to them. For the most part both this season and last, he appeared semi stunned to be on the ice. When you have a bewildered defenseman on the ice, you know that you're in deep trouble.

And again in all fairness, he finally did pull up his game to a respectable level prior to the departure.

He mystified some of us older folks who always wondered at the fact that he was big, he did hit, he could carry the puck, he had a hell of a shot from the point and was one of the few people on the team to unload it during a PP ( in the rare moments when he found hismelf out on the point during one), but he was unable to put all of these talents together with a workable brain exercise, and this is what made him so ineffective. Now he is at peace. Bon chance.

The big question in my mind is if Sather can miraculously gain some fiscal sense. IMHO not only are Rozi, Redden, Drury and Gomez overpaid, but so is (Blasphemy Alert!) Hank. Sather fell all overhimself throwing money at him, not only the current long term contract at 6.8MM per year, but even the year before at 4.8MM per. No way Hank should be paid more than Brodeur, good as he is he just doesn't have the track record.

I'm with MikeA above - Sather has GOT to hold the line on the contract offers to the kids, much as we like them. I see a lot of Messier in Dubi, but at this point he is not worth more than $1.5MM - $1.8MM per year for his next contract. Keep it short, 2-3 years, or even qualify him for one year - let him prove he's worth the big bux before it gets thrown at him. Z is the best talent on this team, but no way an inconsistent 50-60 point guy gets more than the $3.5MM he's making now, especially with the future cap reduction.

Ya know its funny, much as we hate the Debbies, I think most of us respect them. You don't see Lou having the contract issues Sather does. Guys accept less than market to play for that team, and why? To get parades in a parking lot?? Sather needs to learn fiscal discipline NOW, or we are terminally screwed.

Mako... I did say there 'may' be less pressure for the two veterans... Antropov was lambasted in Toronto on and off for the past few seasons... he gets a second chance at yes... believe it or not, a less pressure city than Toronto.

Morris may have some pressure coming here in New York as a veteran Defensmen on a team that's not exactly the New York Neon-lights names at the blueline... but I still think coming here with only 18 to play in a free agent year on this team right now isn't as bad as if he was brought in from the outset. He'll probably put more pressure on himself while he's here at the end of this season to try to earn his final significant contract on the free market.

We'll see...

Jerkins here is my post from LAST NIGHT! I guess Maloney was asking too much for Doan and Slats wouldn't give in.

PBR
March 3rd, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Hearing Rangers are talking with Don Maloney (Phoenix GM).
Rangers get Derek Morris (rental) for Dawes,Prucha and Kalinin (all gone after season anyway).
Morris($3.9 mil cap hit)is UFA after season.
Prucha($1.6 mil cap hit)and Kalinin($2.1 mil cap hit)both rentals for Phoenix and UFA after season.
Phoenix is also a major seller at this point! Talking to Rangers also about BIG right wing Shane Doan.

Spiderpig-For next year there is Potter/Sags/Sauer/Del Z to all show us what they got over Reitz.

As for Nicky Z and $4.5 million; not in this economy and Zettererg became the new measuring stick with only $6. I say Nicky Z gets $3.5, Dubi like $1.9, and Cally like $1.2. Just a guess.

Also, unless Morris plays like Rob Blake, the dude has like 13 points this year, he's not exactly in a position to demand much.

Most likely the 4th line goes through a major change next year. I can see Betts/Sjo not coming back in favor of AA and friends.

I just read some guys post where he blasted everyone who posts here and then goes on to to say that Sather will get rid of a couple of the big contracts on "draft day"....as if Draft day is when Sather really shines.....

The only way a Redden or Rozi goes somewhere is if a draft pick or two goes "with them" and then we'll be down to being able to draft a single player a year for the next two years...thats a team-building plan baby!!
