Sather Live! (updated)

These are some quick quotes from a brief conference call with Glen Sather. It just ended. Not a lot more than this:

“Antropov is a big winger or center-iceman and he’ll help us in the goal scoring department.

“Morris gives is a bit more bite on the back end. He can play a little bit of offense and defense, and he’s an aggressive defensman.”

“Antropov is certainly a guy whos had a lot of power play time. Morris is a smart player who has had a history of playing on the power play.”

“I think it’s a little early to tell how they’re going to perform here or (if they will be re-signed). But I’m fairly optimistic (they can be signed).”

On Prucha: “I like Prucha too. He was certainly given an opportunity (in Phoenix), but we needed to get some size on the power play and (Antropov does that).”

On the lack of trades across the league:

“So many people are in the (playoff) hunt. It doesn’t seem there were that many guys willing to sell today.”

“We tried to add (grit) for sure. I wanted to get some scoring, some size, some grit and some speed. We’ve done that.”

Voros is still on the NHL roster.

On Tortorella’s feeling on the trades:

“He likes them. He thinks we’ve helped our team immensely.”

There were a bunch of trades announced after the Rangers’ deals. I don’t have time to type them out, but you can see them here.

The future is still here, and that is a good thing.

    Cally
    Dubinsky
    Korpikoski
    Michael Del Zotto
    Bobby Sangs
    Anisimov
    Grachev

  2. We got rid of small guys to get bigger guys. It all makes sense. I hope now it can come together.

Gomer centering the two Nics should be good.

  3. You got size on the PP from Antro, but you didn’t trade Pru for Antro, so that is a pointless argument Sather.

  4. Slats should have went after Kunitz. He’s looking pretty good with the Pens.

But then again, for some reason everyone who comes to NY these days, never does that great. Must be a fuggin curse.

It would be sweet if Antropov can be the opposite and finally break out, and be the dominant center we hoped we would have with Dru, and Gomer.

  5. My question is how the hell is he going to be able to pay them what they want while keeping the young players whoneed their raises? I would love for Sather to be able to hold onto both of thse players as they fill large holes in this team for the immediate future however with the contracts already on the books how can he say he is fairly optimistic he will be able to resign them?

  6. yessiree bob on

    Fire Sther!

What a brutal trade. Gave up 3 good younger players for one older overpriced and overrated defenseman.

And Prucha was starting to play amazing hockey and loved by fans.

And worst of all the 3 worst players were not traded, yes I mean Gomez, Sjostrom and Betts. The 3 players with room temperature IQ combined and physicality of Nigel Dawes combined

  7. The key to today’s moves is going to be whether or not Morris turns out to be an appreciable upgrade over Kalinin. I hated Kalinin for most of the season, but he has really picked it up under Torts. It’sll be interesting to see how Morris fares on Broadway, but with 24 PIM on the season, he doesn’t seem to have that snarl he once did. I dunno…

I’m just glad we made it through today with our 1st, Grachev and Anisimov still on board.

  8. Listening to NHL Network stream, allt he commentators liked the moves for the Rangers esp. Bill Clement.

  9. One guy said, Kalinin didn’t fit, then another guy said ‘didn’t fit? didn’t anyone watch him the last three years why would you want him?’

    haha

  10. Mark (the orginal) on

Not sure how I forgot the most important guy on my list of young guys.

    STAAL

CCCP i’ve posted here before, you must be a janitor cause your intellect is always way behind the other posters here.
Great post Jay, totally agree that this CBA has made the NHL worse. And yeah Antropov will be boo’d in MSG by April, bank on it.

Gargoyle AKA Beer Me! im glad that your intellect gives you room to judge other people intellect. God given ability…cant argue with that… just like nobody can argue with your opinion about Renney.

  12. Last night around 10 I posted Doan and Morris for Kalinin,Prucha and Dawes plus others rumor. Looks like Sather showed some restraint and didn’t give into Maloneys request for Callahan plus ? for Doan.

  13. PruBelongsOnTheIce on

    fire sather.

i hope he rots in hell.

I’m not going to watch this heartless team miss the playoffs

    LET’S GO COYOTES!

  14. We needed to shed the Dawes’ of the world to make room for other players to make the team next year and offering more money to the Dubinsky’s and what have you.

    It’s addition by subtraction.

Sorry, but Nigel Dawes will never be more than a 3rd line player and he’s not the type of guy to lose sleep over.

In a salary cap era you can’t rate trades the same way as year’s past. You fill a need and you create some space.

The fact that we signed guys taht don’t have long-term deals is great as it gives us more options for next year.

If Antropov puts us on his back and takes us to the cup finals, resign him. If he’s Aaron Voros, let him walk.

As the old saying goes, you can’t teach size and we just got REAL big real fast.

  15. sigh. You hope he rots in hell for trading a hockey player in a buisness. Sad son.

  16. Voros is still here because every other GM in the league knows that he blows, hence why no one put a waiver claim in for him.

  17. my beef isn’t Morris, it wouldn’t matter who it was.. we didn’t shed any salary.. Kal Pru and Dawes were all walking anywya and no way we are resigning these two…

he should have atleast gotten picks back but right now the net trade value is

    we lost two picks

we got to rent a players for 19 games and lost three players who we were going to lose anyway for 19 games…

so we lost two picks… now given how good Sather is at dfatng this might not really matter, but he failed at what he needed to do here… he needed to dump salary at least one… packedge the two picks with one of the big guys and I bet someone would have taken them…

  18. REPOST
Can’t wait to go to the game tomorrow and see a group of people that I could care less about. The only people I actually like on this team are Henrik and Dubinsky. Now with Pru gone and Avery back I don’t know if I care that much anymore.

Also, I love how Voros is still on this team, but Prucha and Dawes are gone. Way to go Sather

  19. Orr, logistics and making sure the teams are under the cap is the reason that trades are getting announced up til now.

The O’Sullivan to Edmonton deal had even extra work since he went throught Carolina.

  20. These are great short-term fixes, but the real problem are the Drury and Redden contracts. We will not re-sign Morris, Antropov, or Zherdev.

  21. Brandon

dawes was gone in the off season anyway… he was an rfa.. take him to arbitration bring him down low ball his offer and let someone match… then you get a pick…

  22. Prucha is 6 ft 175 lbs. Look it up

    ….

Teams often beef up player demo’s… especially smaller guys like Prucha.

I’m not doubting it says that somewhere, but when Prucha first appeared on the scene scoring goals and playing like a big dog, a big deal was made about his size and that he was’t even 6’.

    Funny Prucha memory #218:

They interviewed him early on on MSG when he was making his name, and some woman asked him something like “So… you seem to like to play like you’re a big guy… how do you manage that?” And he just seemed confused and smiled and said “I AM a big guy!”…. anyone remember that?

  23. yeah you are gonna hate the rangers because pruchas 4goals are gone dc39?

do you really miss dawes? 3 yrs now we were told he had 25+ potential and what has happened with him.. it was over

  24. Morris is steady, not flashy. That is why people feel he’s overated. He wont wow anyone but his consistant play from the backend is what I am looking for. As far as being a steep price, we wont know for awhile. Forget Kalinin, Dawes is a question mark still and Prucha’s energy and grit for his size will be missed and will see he gets to the 30 goal mark again.

  25. I am going to one of the remaining Coyote games this year, I’ll say hi to Prucha for everyone!!!

  26. Here is my post from last night. Guess my source in AZ in little bit better than Carp or TSN!!!!!

Hearing Rangers are talking with Don Maloney (Phoenix GM).
Rangers get Derek Morris (rental) for Dawes,Prucha and Kalinin (all gone after season anyway).
Morris($3.9 mil cap hit)is UFA after season.
Prucha($1.6 mil cap hit)and Kalinin($2.1 mil cap hit)both rentals for Phoenix and UFA after season.
Phoenix is also a major seller at this point! Talking to Rangers also about BIG right wing Shane Doan.

  27. Sather hasn’t made good moves. BUT these are good moves. Anyone who thinks Sather did bad is just wrong.

  28. Fire Sather…however I have a feeling this team can put a good run together. Keep Naz-Gomez-Cally together. And maybe Avery-Drury-Z then Korpi-Antropov-Dubi

  29. Sather’s job today was to dump salary. He didn’t.

Love his comments — he doesn’t say anything! He obviously has no idea about who he signed, he just needed to do something in his desperate bid to make the playoffs. Good GMs have reasons for their moves — Sather just grabs at straws.

  30. Three-way deal with CAR/LAK/EDM:

    Cole to CAR.
    O’Sullivan to EDM.
    J. Williams to LAK.

Williams has been hurt for the past couple of years but this looks like a big win for Edmonton to me. They get by far the youngest player in the deal and also the one who is arguably the best right now. Looks like Carolina is looking to regain some past magic.

  31. bull dog line on

this team is better today than it was yesterday.
    LW’s dubi, antro, and avery.
    RW’s zherdev, naslund, and cally.
good depth, good size, now they just need to score.
they are built better for the playoffs than they were. now they just have to make them. if they do, this team could make a run.

  32. Good GMs have reasons for their moves—Sather just grabs at straws.

    ***************************

Well said. Just like throwing a ton of money Gomez & Drury just so no other team would sign them.

  33. Who needs picks when you draft like sather?

He knows that we know that he knows that we know he can’t draft for shit. 1 good pick (Staal) in 10 years is not a great ratio.

So he saved face again by eliminating the chances of making a bad pick. ha

  34. Fitzy March 4th, 2009 at 4:03 pm

We have a lot of people here that seem to root for the player, not the team.

    ********************************************************

I think it comes down to the fact that when you look at the 94 team, there were a handful of core guys that you just liked the way they played and they were good guys. Even the Yankees of the late 90’s. Good core group of guys (ie. Jeter, ONeil, Brosius, Rivera).

This Ranger team doesn’t have that in my opinion. There is no group of guys that you just really like everything they do (except maybe Henke and Dubinsky). Pru was one of those guys that you loved to root for. Now who is there? Drury? Gomez? They haven’t shown us anything to root for.

  35. Avery for Dawes- Antropov for Prucha- Morris for Kalinen
    Definetly Bigger, tougher, and better.

  36. Mark (the orginal) on

Who was Glenn going to dump? Yes these contracts (Redden,Gomez,Drury) are bad, but did anyone really have faith they could be traded. I will say Glenn moves Roszival in the summer, that will shed him some money. He could get rid of Naslund at 1 year for 4 million in the summer as well if he wants to.

  37. The Phoenix Coyotes have turned into our “other” farm team. Every time we make a deal it is with them. I understand that there GM came from NY, but come on. We made a big trade with them last year at the deadline as well…

  38. the way the season was going dawes and prucha wouldnt be here next year anyway. i dont like antropov and morris so to me we traded crap for crap.

  39. DCloutier39

Ive got a lot of those guys

Lundqvist, Valliquete, Dubinsky, Callahan, Betts, Orr, Roszival, Staal.

Im not too warm to Drury and Gomer yet but they are bound to have a few good seasons here and im sure they will.

  40. burke just roasted antropov. said a few months ago there was no chance in hell antro was worth a second rd pick. then went on to say it wasn’t until he confronted him publicly through the media that antro started to play well enough to land a second round pick.

    antro = zheredev = kovalev = underachievers

  41. True Blue 23 on

this is not so bad… redden was bad… overall if Slats goal was to get bigger and tougher, well done! lets score some goals now…

  42. They should change the second round to the Leafs round…they have at least three by my count!

  43. zherdev and antro are not nearly as good as kovalev. knock kovy all u want but he is good playoff performer and was an essential part of our cup run 15 years ago

sather doesnt know what he is doing, so nothing changed. i am still actually really surprised he hired torts

  44. NYRinPHX, that’s a good way to look at it. Deal definitely doesn’t seem as bad looking at it like that.

  45. I think he knows it is 3pm, it is just ridiculous that these deals are still coming in. Maybe Sather did something bigger and better…Probably not!

  46. onecupin69years on

This team lacks chemistry…its a hodge podge assembly of mediocrity.
Sather would have been better off trading something to get something ,he traded crap for crap..period, in reality no other NHL GMs, except his toronto and Phoenix buddies ,made a deal with with sather.

  47. Boring team with weak players. Add new boring, mediocre players. No room left to move during the summer. NHL media now openly criticizes and mocks Sather. All fan favorites are no longer on team.
Cap limit will go down over summer. Sather is still here. Disaster.

  48. shesends

Yeah Antro was rosted by Burke and I think he had like 2 goals and 2 assist in that next game LOL Something like that. LOL

  49. Phoenix added

Lombardi, Dawes, Prucha, Kalinin, Upshall, and picks

    for

    Tellqvist, Jokinin, Morris, and Carcillo

    Seems weird to me

  50. Orr,

thanks i cant wait to see him play. since u brought jagr a few posts earlier imagine jagr and antropov togetehr on a line.

  51. The carcillo deal drives me nuts. Flyers just matched our Avery move perfectly.

  52. “imagine jagr and antropov togetehr on a line.”

One of them loses the puck and it’s a 3 on 0 against Hank the other way.

  53. “imagine jagr and antropov togetehr on a line.”

One of them loses the puck and it’s a 3 on 0 against Hank the other way.

    OR worse – 3 on 1 (Redden)

  54. Toronto gets:
    G Olaf Kolzig
    D Jamie Heward
    D Andy Rogers
    4th-Round Draft Pick

    for

    D Richard Petiot
    from TB

  55. Fitzy March 4th, 2009 at 4:03 pm

We have a lot of people here that seem to root for the player, not the team.

    Great Point!

  56. Sundin's Ghost on

This is the Rangers best trade deadline in a long time.

Prucha fans have been crying all year and here they are crying again. Whine cry whine cry. All year long. Prucha won’t even be in the NHL in 2-3 seasons. Mark my words. He’s too small. Mike York, the sequel.

Aaron Voros is still on the team and Prucha isn’t! HAW! Please do what you promise and go root for Phoenix, because the way some of you make pet players out of people is embarrassing to the rest of us.

  57. Sather did a good job today. Morris is a righty shot, can log minutes, and can move the puck. A bit of a physical game as well. Nigel (can’t get across my own blueline with the puck)Dawes, Petr (the human crash dummy) Prucha, and Dmitry (…crap…) Kalanin were just roster filler anyway. Prucha had one good season. Dawes is downright awful. And Kalanin was below average at best.

Great day for Sather. Welcome back Overlord.

  58. ..the Flyers are going to beat us up in the home and home series in March ..

    Kotalik

  59. I can’t say the moves are great but…we did get bigger and tougher.
I’m happy Prucha will get to play now…
How funny would it be if Renney went on to coach Phx?
    HAHA! Poor Prucha

  60. 1. Funny looking at Sather’s comments that getting big and gritty were priorities, where all we heard the last year is speed and finesse.

    2. Antropov for a #2 that Sather would use on Jessiman’s evil twin is fine. Hopefully the kid plays well.

    3. Morris is not good. OK, Kalinin sucks too. So what he has done is handed Phx Prucha (who hasn’t gotten a fair shake since we signed Shanny, and amazingly figuring Prucha’s 30 goals weren’t worthy), and Dawes – – who has been having problems not getting knocked off the puck. We got one UFA for 2 RFAs, so we have also traded two picks (for those who think we won’t sign these guys anyway, and Sather stays home sick on draft day).

    4. The man overpaid, period. Youth and upside at a lower cost for Prucha and Dawes was not worth Morris, period. What really happened here is Slats got involved in a bidding war with Philly for Morris when Philly dropped out of Boumeester sweepstakes. Philly drives price for Morris up, gets Carcillo instead (we couldn’t get him in the package), and grabs McClaren for a 6.

They are laughing now eating cheesesteaks and our guy is killing us.

  61. Carcillo is no Sean Avery. Carcillo cannot skate, doesn’t score and is only good for fantasy leagues that award points for PIMs…

  62. the entire devil team could become rangers and I would still root for them.. I dont really care who the players are as much as I care about winning.

Sure I love hank, dubi, callahan, mara… but I want the NYR to exceed more than them individually

  63. How funny would it be if Renney went on to coach Phx?
    HAHA! Poor Prucha

    *************************************************

    That’s horrible!!! Bite your tongue!!

  64. possible combos on

    drury antropov zherdev

    dubi gomez Naslund

    avery korpi callahan

    sjo betts orr

  65. Edmonton did a good job. they have a couple new toys to try out with Hemsky (and horcoff).

  66. As long as Colton Orr is in the lineup, the Flyers will always be his jail yard BITCHES!!!

  67. Burke is paying $500k in salaries for 2 injured guys, swapping prospects, and getting a pick…basically paid $500k for a pick. We need a GM like him.

  68. Hey Jesse – I can’t wait to see Voros at hartford (not). Going there on 28th to see them play first place Providence Bruins. Wolf Pack only a couple of points behind. Bet ya he costs us that game.

I am sorry to see Prucha treated the way he was and sorry to see him go, but you need to root for the sweater. The cream will rise to the top and the better ones will be here for a long time.

  69. eric

carcillo scored 13 last year in 57 games…. eerily similar to avery.

It’s annoying cause you know that avery’s gonna be occupied with carcillo rather than richards (who tends to get involved in the heat of the moment)

  70. flippedturtle on

Glen Sather on whether Morris’ lack of postseason experience will hurt him
“No, I don’t think so, I don’t know why it would. He’s a good hockey player. There’s not a lot of difference playing in the playoffs and the regular season.”

Wow just wow on that last sentence.

  71. I don’t know much about Morris, and I know just slightly more about Antropov, so it’s tough to say how I feel about these deals. I will say that my gut tells me the Antropov deal is the better of the two. Antropov definitely has potential, is under 30, adds needed size, and can score. He is now the Rangers leader in goals, as a matter of fact.

It’s tough for me to judge losing Petr Prucha fairly. I’m admittedly a big fan of his. I think the guy can still score 25-30 goals in this league when given the opportunities. He was a fan favorite and was just fun to watch, so he’ll be missed. What bothers me about the Morris deal is that Sather gave up BOTH Dawes and Prucha. Personally, I wish it could have been done for just Dawes and Kalinin, and maybe a minor-leaguer or something…but who knows.

In any case, I do think the team is improved. Should be interesting to see what the lines are for tomorrow night. I’d expect:

    Naslund – Gomez – Zherdev
    Dubinsky – Drury – Antropov
    Avery – Korpikoski – Callahan
    Sjostrom – Betts – Orr

Maybe Torts doesn’t want to break up the Drury/Dubinsky/Callahan line though and sticks Antropov on the third line. We’ll see.

  72. The bottom line (to me) is…if Renney was still coaching this team, I would be very worried about the acquisitions today…I have muuuuuch more faith in Torts to get the most of out Antropov and Morris…I’m happy with the addition to more size to our offense.

  73. I don’t understand why everyone is upset with Morris.

He’s not a savior but hes much better than Kalinin. And we gave away Prucha and Dawes – who would probably only play 5 games combined – since we got Avery and Antropov.

The teams better then when we started the day. Everyone who was complaining about the salary cap, lets be realistic, we couldn’t dump any of those salaries on anyone. Our only hope is to buy Redden out over the summer.

  74. I have wanted renney fired for the past 3 seasons and I hate both these moves, the two do not go hand in hand. the playoffs are by no means a sure thing and if even if we sneak in, we arent making any noise.

and to top it off we have no 2nd or 3rd round pick(if they make the playoffs) and no offensive help coming from our system or in free agency unless we can waive 2 or 3 players

id question why any ranger fan with a brain is happy right now

  75. Doodie Machetto on

“Listening to NHL Network stream, allt he commentators liked the moves for the Rangers esp. Bill Clement.”

Then we’re especially dead if that know-nothing liked them.

The McClaren deal is a great one for Philly. Probably came in so late because they were trying to work out JayBo. That’s also probably why Florida’s move with Eminger didn’t come in until late because after it was clear they were keeping JayBo they decided to improve their team’s chances to make the playoffs.

The O’Sullivan deal (or as I affectionately initial him: POS) is a steal for the Oilers. POS is far from being a POS, and Cole is getting up there in age, although the trades didn’t address their #1 need: a good wing for Ales Hemsky’s line.

The Canes have a weird thing for Cole since he was a good player for them. (kinda like us with Avery). The Kings only getting Williams in return is a disaster. WOW. That might be the worst trade of the day. (Just found out they also got a 2nd round pick. Still not a good deal in my opinion.)

WOW, just found out Buffalo traded Kotalik for a 2nd rounder! MASTERSTROKE by Buffalo. Can’t believe that deal. Can’t believe the Oil would just dump their best player for a 2nd rounder, especially after picking up another good young talent in POS. Buffalo REALLY improved their team today, although, they could’ve done a lot better in the goaltending department.

  76. Sather sucks ……. Get rid of him …

Morris has one powerplay assist this season … wow … powerplay problems solved !!

  77. Leafs just traded for the Goalie named Eddie Lebec , who was once the boyfriend of Carla Tortelli from Cheers

  78. **Sportsnet Take on the Rangers Day**

    Sportsnet Analysis: Jim Kelley:

Derek Morris was a prize that lost some luster as the day went along. Still this is a good pickup for the Rangers who don’t have enough offence coming from their back end.

The only thing the Rangers have to fear is whether or not Morris comes to play like he can, or like Wade Redden does.

The Rangers pretty much gave up some of their mistakes and disappointments for Morris. Dmitri Kalinin started out well in Buffalo but faded there and has done the same in New York.

Nigel Dawes, 19 points in 52 games, might still have an upside, but Petr Prucha has faded as fast as Kalinin.

Change of scene could help, but there is reason for Phoenix to be concerned.

The Leafs get rid of a player that their GM trashed and for less than they hoped for.

Hard to figure anything went down here other than Nik Antropov laughing all the way to New York.

What’s the condition: that Antropov sign the deal he turned down with Toronto?

    http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/trades/

  79. and Sather didn’t trade away any prospect for the likes of Guerin. I’ll take this deadline day

  80. We could have had Mclaren for a late round pick instead of Morris. Big guy, physical. Not giving up Prucha.

Could have had O’Sullivan (who I believe is signed) for a guy like Drury. LA has more cap space than Slats has cigars. LA wanted Drury when he was UFA, maybe they still wanted him! LA gave up O’Sullivan for a Drury (or less) talent.

Bad trades. And probably should have been sellers…Redden for a pick (who cares if it was a late round pick if it gets his $$$$$ off the books.)

    1) We aren’t making it out of the 2nd round of the playoffs
    2) The 2 guys we got will most likely be gone on July 1.
    3) Even if we have 7 million to ditribute as “raises” for Dubi, Zherdev, Callahan, Staal (in a year), etc we have no cap room to sign new players this year.
    4) Our prospects are average, they will not come in and be impact 20+ goal scorers. None of them. I’ve seen AA play in Hartford and am not impressed. PA is basically equal to Callahan’s talent, but without the heart. Greg Moore is a waste. Grachev is the only hope in the system, but again he is dominiating the ECHL, your mom could dominate in the ECHL if she was 6’4″ and knew how to skate.

  81. Doodie Machetto on

WAIT! Edit to my last post! LA traded POS *AND* the 2nd rounder for Williams. OMG! That’s the WORST trade this year, BY FAR!!

  82. Burke’s got me sooooo confused. Yes, I know the Tavares/Hedman sweepstakes is a motivator (4 years from now, Schenn/Hedman would be downright scary) but why the goalies hoarding? 4 goalies! I know Vesa is done for the year but is he a UFA? What about Pogge?

I’m not smart enough to wrap my brain around his master plan…

  83. Actually thinking about the lines, I almost feel like our team changed too much. Trade dead-line is usu. for a tweek or the big difference maker. I feel like I’m staring at a totally new line-up. Did we just loose what little chemistry we had? Avery, Morris, Antropov…to me thats a lot of change…Avery alone was alot!
    Thoughts?

  84. jeffluke

i think toronto did this 2yrs ago where they hoarded like 4 nhl capable goalies for some reason

  85. Do you really think anyone would trade a pick for Redden? He has the worst contract in hockey – no one will eat that. Its just unrealistic.

  86. Sather just needs to clear space so he can sign Zherdev long-term this summer. He is who we need to build this team around.

Nik and Nik are going to dominate the powerplay

    (once every three games)

  87. Doodie

“WOW, just found out Buffalo traded Kotalik for a 2nd rounder! MASTERSTROKE by Buffalo. Can’t believe that deal. I’m confused. Cole the oilers best player? Buffalo REALLY improved their team?

  88. I think Someone (Lowe) is gonna screw us with Dubinsky by offering him money that straps our cap even more

  89. Anyone know the exact specifics regarding the conditional draft pick in the Antropov deal?

  90. possible combos on

leafs trade player to be named (his mommy hasn’t given him a moniker yet) for goaltender Les Binkley and Goaltender Tiny Thompson. services pending

  91. Im getting sick of all the NHL Analysts, holding certain players out as the “big Prizes” to be had on Deadline day.

All i kept hearing was where would Jaybo, Morris, Antropov, Moore, Jokinen, and Guerin get traded to.

The Rangers go and get 2 of the 6 “Big Prizes” and BECAUSE THEY ARE THE RANGERS get blasted for making the deals.

If Pittsburgh, got Morris and Antropov…. the Analyts would be singing their praises that Crosby “got his winger” and they added a “much needed hole” by getting Morris

    TOTALLY RIDICULOUS !!!

  92. I think we got what we needed – size up front, a solid replacement for a crap defenseman and a bit of personality and abrasiveness, we lost 2 RFA’s who we probably wouldn’t re-sign in the summer. Slats also didn’t give up the farm, you can bet PHX were asking after Sangs or AA.

We’ll have to wait and see what the conditional pick is for Antropov – it will either be on him re-signing or based on play-off progression.

All-in-all a decent day, sorry to see Prucha go but you’ve got to give something to get something.

  93. I think that Sather should have signed Dubi when his value was low. But I have a feeling all the players he wants re-signed he will take to arbitration.

  94. ORR

Isles have been going for worst record since ‘shutting down an injured DP’ and marching guys to IR with borderline injuries. Leafs are at it too late. Funny thing about Isles strategy is Joey and Danis are better!

  95. No one cares about Morris or Antropov, and it’s only fitting that they went to the Rangers, who couldn’t afford to sign either of them even if they turned out to be great.
Don’t think for a moment that anyone in the NHL respects Sather. And they’re not even trying to hide their disdain for him anymore.

  96. tyree

I feel the same about Dubi – – we are going to get screwed by someone on him. Watch that fishstick front office with low payroll – – they’d love to stick it to us.

  97. Grachev is not in the ECHL.. He is in jr.s(ontario) all the scouts so smart but they do not know what league guys play in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  98. This is one of those trades you just have to WAIT to see the outcome. No one knows whether Prucha can come back from all the confidence bashing he took at the hands of Renney. Dawes regressed under Renney, can he come back in a new environment? Who the hell knows until it all plays out. Some trades you don’t like work out fine. Other trades you do like become a disaster.

I would like to see this club keep intact its young corps of: Staal, Potter, Sauer, Anisimov, Parenteau, Sanguinetti, Callahan, Dubinsky, Grachev, Del Zotto, Zherdev, Korpikoski, and Girardi.

  99. Anyone want to sell me a Prucha jersey for like 5 bucks, I can wear it to the Coyotes game?

  100. Late breaking news :

The Leafs just signed Goalies Gary Coleman and Dana Plato from the Differen’t Strokes organization out in Studio City, California…..Defenseman Todd Bridges was put on Waivers and the Rangers are interested

  101. Cakewalk, judging by the Rangers track record of letting players who we deem as spare parts go for a bag of pucks, only to go to other teams and light the lamp with impugnity, I’d bet Prucha and Dawes will score 30-40 a piece in Phoenix

  102. Which minor league Rangers prospect has shown that they will be an awesome player? Anyone? Maybe Grachev and Anisimov will be ok. Maybe. That’s about it. This team needs an authentic star goal scorer, but there’s no money for one. Despite the fact that the Rangers traded some 3rd liners today, it’s 3rd liners that remain. Whoopee! The Devils, Caps and Bruins are far superior, and have authentic young talent. We have a potentially excellent coach surrounded by extremely limited talent. Who in the league is any more afraid of playing this team today than they were yesterday?

  103. If we make it past the first round, I want all you bandwagon fans to eat your own shit and admit you were wrong.
It wont happen because some fans just like to be miserable I think.

Im just so sick of all the negative talk about our Rangers, we dont make a trade, we make a trade, jesus some of you are such morons. Wasnt there enough trash talk with our losing streak? With Renney before he got fired? With Voros? with so many other things?

IF we make the playoffs anything can happen

Dawes & Kalinen = dead weight werent coming back next year
PRucha – loved him but wasnt coming back next year
    Avery back for Cheap
    Morris- better than Kalinen
Antropov- Better than Dawes & Prucha

You’d think we jsut traded Stall and Hank

Dont worry, be happy, and stop being cyber tough guy fans.

(Sorry for the cursing Carp! you did a great job all day)

  104. Sundin’s Ghost- Great Post 4:23. Could’t agree with you more. Re: today’s moves we certainly got bigger, obtained a goal scorer in Antropov & a D-man (Morris) hat can not only clear traffic in front Henrik, but also add points from the blueline. Considering the direction we were going how can we go wrong? Look forward to tomorrow nite. Possible combos: Zorro, Gomex, Antro
    Avery, Drury, Dubi
    Naslaund, Korpi, Callahan
    Shoestring, Betts, Orr

  105. It seems to me that 3 players is an awful lot to give up for Morris. I’m happy to see Dawes go and the same with Kalanin, although it is sad to see Prucha go. Hope he gets a real chance to play on a regular basis. The rangers are full of guys that have no pride in the sweater, guys they had to throw money at to come here, and Prucha has always given us everything he has so it is typical that he’s the one who leaves. Antropov can be good when he feels like it. We’ll see if Torts motivates him away from his habitual, lazy play.

  107. onecupin69years on

These aren’t trades needed to win the cup but seem like trades needed to make the playoffs.
We’re still players away from the cup.

  108. Cakewalk: I agree with your “wait and see” attitude regarding today’s trades. Wouldn’t be surprised if Phoenix wins this trade big time. Dawes would not have played here under current conditons, so he can take his (third-highest) 4 game-winners and his PP goal totals that exceeded what Callahan–and Zherdev!! were able to score this season with him to Gretzky land where I’m sure he’ll be treated with alot more respect than he received on this website. Heck, in summarizing Sather’s comments on today’s moves, Carp didn’t even mention Dawes’ name. Wouldn’t it be ironic. if in the end he turns out to have the best career of those involved? Stay tuned.

  109. Doodie Machetto on

    Teams whose moves I liked:

    1) Buffalo: wasn’t happy until the Hemsky deal, which was the steal of the day. But, a 2nd Rounder was too rich for Moore and Connolly’s contract was too rich for his injury concerns. Tellqvist was an OK pickup until Miller returns.

    2) Calgary: Overpaid a little for Leopold, but the Jokinen move was just right. They’re really in a position to contend now. Plus, as I heard on TSN, they’ve got enough depth in their prospects to part with the young players they parted with.

    3) Pittsburgh: Guerin for that cheap? Good move. The Wozniewski deal seems to be for a midlevel prospect, not too shabby. Adams on waivers is good depth. Plus, they can recall Satan at any point and not have to worry about him being claimed by another team against them in the playoffs.

    4) Boston: Montador for Nokelainen is a good depth move. Recchi’s deal wouldn’t have been good without the 2nd rounder. They needed some veteran playoff experience to help them go deep and they gave up two higher level prospects. But the 2nd rounder in return will help them replenish their prospect pool. Good move by Boston.

    5) Phoenix: Great return for Jokinen. Great return for Tellqvist. Great return for Carcillo. And Maloney knew exactly what he was getting in Prucha and Dawes. Kalinin was just a throw in to make the cap space work.

    Teams I’m lukewarm for:

    1) Rangers: Antropov isn’t a bad pickup, even though I would’ve preferred the team to sell instead of buy. Considering the value of Dawes, Prucha, and Kalinin at this point, Morris was an OK deal. My problem is that Prucha was totally misused by Renney and this is just the culmination of that. That’s what upsets me most about it. He’s going to be a 30 goal scorer in Phoenix. Maloney knows exactly what he was getting.

    2) Flyers: The McLaren trade was great. The Carcillo trade was too expensive. I like Carcillo, don’t get me wrong, but that’s just way too much in return.

    3) Anaheim: Just shifted things around, didn’t really buy or sell. Not sure what they were trying to accomplish.

    4) Ottawa: Got a pick and a goaltender (which Lord knows they need) for a player they weren’t going to be able to retain. But, LeClaire is an iffy goaltender. If he plays well, the deal works out nicely. If he doesn’t, at least they got SOMETHING for Vermette.

    5) Toronto: Great return for Moore, not as good of a return as they were expecting for Antropov.

Teams whose moves I didn’t like:

    1) Edmonton: I like the POS pickup, but the Hemsky to Buffalo for a 2nd rounder is just TERRIBLE. Think about it, Antropov got a 2nd rounder. MOORE even got a 2nd rounder: and it was the same Buffalo that gave a 2nd rounder for Hemsky! Hemsky is WAY better than both of those players. Just awful move on their part.

    2) LA: POS AND a 2nd Rounder for JUSTIN WILLIAMS?! Oh my God. Possibly the worst trade since the lockout.

    3) Columbus: They probably could’ve gotten a higher return for LeClaire. Also, Vermette isn’t really a center, which is really what they needed.

  110. rangers got bashed b/c they werent a threat b4 these trades were made and these trades dont make them a threat. pitt is a team with enough talent offensively to beat washington or boston so antropov would have made them slightly more talented offensively. we dont have anything near their talent level or the flyers. we have a good goalie and that is about it right now. (staal and maybe dubi can be good but those 2 arent enough to make the rangers a threat)

  112. “cyber tough guy”, HA!, I like this term, I’m going to use it.

I agree, we made the best moves possible without taking on any extra long-term deals or giving up any of our quality youth.

I liked Petr but he needed a change of scenery and he’s not the second coming of Adam Graves nor is he Antropov. Nigel is not a unique player; there are 100 Nigel’s in the league. Our’s disappeared every other game and never made huge impacts other than a couple nice SO goals.

Everyone has been screaming for Kalinin’s head since day 1, so he’s a wash.

We got bigger and tougher and shed some of the dead weight a long the way.

  113. Mikey…

don’t get me wrong i’m happy to see the Rangers succeed if these guys help this year then great… but I wanted to see Sather commit to the future and for that he needed to shed at least one big salary and he didn’t…

not only that all he did was get rid of players that were going to walk at the end of the year anyway…

I was happy with Antropov but when Morris came through (and it is not solely because of Prucha) I got annoyed because Dawes and Pru were rfa’s meaning if we don’t sign them we get picks… we could have held onto them and gotten picks, or used them to sweeten a contract move… or send all three together for a pick… I don’t care but something to show he is thinking about the future…. must have been too much to ask…

  114. Doodie Machetto on

Jeffluke, Hemsky was the Oilers’ best player. They traded him to Buffalo for a 2nd round pick!

    Cole sucks.

  115. Andropov is an NHLer…not a prospect…. and if you go over and see how the Toronto fans are screaming that Burke got fleeced by Sather thats a pretty strong indictment of what they think of Andropov.

Here is my take on the trades:

Kalinen sucked, Prucha and Dawes were small and the Rangers had too many small forwards. All their contracts were up in July.

You have a 20 year old Russian in Anisimov growing at 6’4 and 205 and an 18 year old Russian in 6’3 and 212 Evgeni Grachev who is breaking scoring records in the OHL: 14th overall and the leading rookie scorer and your bringing in a Russian in Andropov who can help them.

With Avery, Morris and Andropov the team got a lot bigger. Next year it could be even bigger which they need to do to compete in the east. Even if they don’t sign Morris next year they will make room for a prospect like a Sanguinetti or Del Zotto or Potter.

Fritsche, Voros and Rissmiller are gone (3 million all together), Prucha (1.6 million) Kalinin (2.1 million) and Dawes (587 thousand) which clears about 7 million. You pick up Morris and can let him go in July if you want and bring up Anisimov and Gratchev and a young defensemen at under a million each and have the money to sign Andropov. He will love NY.

So far, I am liking the deals and Sather, except for Redden, who may improve a great deal under Torts, has basically admitted he screwed up with Fritsche, Voros, Rissmiller and Kalinin and got rid of them.

Sometimes it takes a change of scenery to get them going. Sometimes they’re just not that good. Nigel, peter and everyone else had their shot.

This is the big apple, some people just can’t make it here.

And if Nigel Dawes goes on to become a 40 goal scorer, I’ll be the first to say… he couldn’t do it in NY.

Dude, I would never put Prucha in a category with any of those other guys. Prucha at least has shown he can play at the NHL level with seasons of 30 and 22 goals. Those other guys couldn’t even put up 20 goals at the AHL level (except for Lundmark’s first AHL season).

If you were going to say that kind of thing, use a young player that actually showed he was of any quality before he was moved, like Mike York.

Of course, I could flip the coin on you and point you to Doug Weight or Tony Amonte.

  129. Jagr's Father on

Listen, Dawes is a bust he will be out of the league in 2 years. He is a career 9 goal a year player. He has no size, no grit and questionable hockey sense. He should have never even made this years roster. I’m glad he is gone he brought nothing to this team and he also showed us he is afraid to take ah hit to make a play. Maybe he will do a little better in the wide open west but i doubt it. And as far as Prucha goes yes he had heart and a solid worth ethic but cmon his rookie year was a total fluke. Only reason he scored that many was because other teams were to busy doubling up on Jagr which allowed him room to skate. He is another Rob Brown. Remember that tool? Yes anyone can rack up points when playing with elite level players but take them away and you become a 5th line player. He will be back in the Czech Republic before you know it.

  130. The point is not that the Rangers gave up Dawes and Prucha. The point is that Sather did not get rid of any of the salary that is tying down any future moves. Get it?
Morris and Antropov are mediocre at best, but they don’t matter anyway. The Rangers won’t even be able to pay Dubinsky, much less Zherdev next year. The cap is going down next season. These moves are just pointless. Sather doesn’t plan, he reacts. That’s bad business.

  134. when prucha had an actual shot he scored 30 goals. yea jagr help a lot but jagr was around for 2 more years after prucha’s rookie season and renney did everything he could not to use prucha and jagr together any more. instead they paid shanny big money to play well for the first 1/2 of 2 seasons then do nothing in the 2nd half/playoffs. the rangers and prucha would have been much better off if he was used on the pp with jagr the past 2 years

in the end instead of at the very least maximizing his value they traded him away for a salary dump that they cant afford to resign and who shouldn’t be resigned

dawes is good ahl/juniors player nothing more no loss there. im more upset with losing the 2nd round pick in what is supposed to be a good draft

With that said, I don’t like the moves Buffalo made today. And I LOVE the moves that Edmonton made.

Wow, thanks for helping me get off the ledge.

  136. Agra, maybe cap room was the wrong term but we freed up some money for the off season. we dont have to resign Morris or Antropov. But I think Antropov has a better upside then all involved.

  137. UESBlueshirt on

My Sabres fan friend said this about the trades and something about the Bills:

“So confusing. In the last 3 games, the sabres have scored 4 goals. 2 by kotalik. Dom moore seems to be an UFA. So he’s just going to go back to Toronto next year? And we gave them a 2nd round pick?

And L. Coles picked to play with the bengals as opposed to the Bills. Being a Buffalo fan is growing more tiresome by the day.”

  138. Good for Prucha if he does…but he wasnt going to do that here so really does it matter?

  139. Mike York? York made the Rangers pay? He had one decent season and at 31 isn’t even in the NHL anymore.

    “Good Job,,Glen”

  141. I will say this. I don’t hate the moves today. I can definitely live with these moves. The way the team has played since Torts took over, we could have won all of the games. I think we are going to be alright here. And all of us were saying that everyone got a clean slate now that Torts is here. Well, that was not much of a clean slate. I think we are going to see better efforts from here on out from all of the guys on the team. Redden included. Yeah, we didn’t move any salary, but, experience wise, this is not such an awful team to take in to the playoffs. I am not going to get my hopes way up there, but I am not going to take a left turn to negativetown either. Let’s just see what happens.

I even had York listed as someone for good support AGAINST Prucha.

But find a player in the last 20 years besides York that played well at one point in NY, was dealt and then fizzled elsewhere.

Even though I can name about 7 or 8 that played well here, weren’t given a real shot, and then exploded eslewhere.

  144. Good for Prucha if he does…but he wasnt going to do that here so really does it matter?

    …..

Why not? I think he could easily net 20g under Tortorella and a regular PP spot.

  145. Sundins ghost- beautiful post

Although I feel like Prucha can still produce, you cant give him another contract next year and have the risk of the same results

  146. UESBlueshirt on

Yes, based on their annual contracts, not their cap hits, if they let Morris and Antro walk and not count Voros and Reitz if they’re not on the roster next year – Reitz we know for sure – that will be about $7.4MM they have to play with.

They can use that to retain/give raises to the FAs they want to keep, which they obviously pared down that list today with their moves.

I’m guessing Zherdev, Dubi and Callahn of the RFAs. And Mara of the UFAs.

Antro is a bit more complicated because we need to see if he’s worth re-signing and then for how much.

Betts and Sjostrom I’d be on the fence on. Don’t get me wrong I like Betts but you have to wonder if he’s blocking someone’s progress from Hartford, same with Sjo.

  147. I’m sorry to see Dawes go. I think he has great hands and great potential. But this is a STEAL for Morris. I’ve never been a fan of Prucha, and think he’s been vastly overrated by the community of Ranger fans.

I think Sather gave up to much for Morris. I would have thought Dawes OR Pruch’s (not both)with Kalinin would have been enough. But that’s Sather either over pay or give up too much. Again we shall see what happen’s now with what Sather has done. Antrpov sounds like a pretty good deal and fit though. TIME will tell.

  156. UESBlueshirt on

Kovalev was at his best in Pitt. He’s done almost the same thing in MTL that he did here. While he never had his big payoff season here like he did last year in MTL, he had a big playoff in ’94 here. Hard to call him a bust, but he’s way down on the list of great wingers for his generation.

Comparing him to his peers, he wasn’t nearly as good as Bure and Mogilny earlier in his career and he isn’t as good as Ovechkin or Kovalchuk at this stage.

  157. turcottelives on

as one of the biggest kalinin bashers earlier in the year, i have to be fair and give him his due. he really turned his game around before getting traded. He had 7 pts and was +10 in his last 27 games (the second half of his time with NYR). i like a more complete defenseman like morris, but he’ll be hard pressed, given his career numbers, to play as well as kalinin did the last 30 games. Then again, he’ll be harder pressed to play anywhere near as bad as kalinin did for the first 30.

  158. Salty,

20 goals is hardly an elite player in this league. That’s an AVERAGE water mark.

I think Prucha got the short end of the stick too, but it wasn’t only Renney’s fault. Sather brought in too many wings this year and ultimately Pru paid the price. I was mainly referring to the player’s that can’t hack it in NY. I didn’t mention Prucha.

Dawes is that player. Had his chance, showed signs of potential but eventually you have to pull the plug on a guy.

  159. for those who were hoping for salary dumps, get real. in this current economy, no one is going to take on somebody elses’ huge contract that last past next season. because the GMs believe the cap will go down after next season.

  160. ( Salty ) You think your cool making that stuiped bet!!?? If you wanna put your money where ya yap is …I’ll take that bet but ol Prucha has to score 30 goals.. If you think ya got the guts . I know he wont play 70 games so the bet wont even go through!!! So lets bet , you chicken!!! $20 American.

  161. Im not calling Kovalev a “bust” Im saying that these “superstars” that the Rangers draft just offensively explode when they get traded to other teams. Think about it.

  162. Yes Salty, we are all keeping Drury. In fact I need to send my share of his salary to Sather this week.

By your logic is we screwed up with Drury we should screw up with Prucha…it’s only fair.

Prucha is not a 1.7mil player. If Sather signed him for that people would rip him apart for spending too much money on a player again.

  163. All-
Any shot of the Rangers bringing up Bell or AA now? I hope 2 hell they dont give Voros another shot….

  164. I dont get thrilled over a goal in late November when we are up by 3. Maybe he could score 20 here but how many of those would be just goals instead of GOALS?

    ……

Again, I give you Exhibit A: *Chris “Mayonnaise ” Drury*

Guy will be lucky to get 20g and I can’t think of one “big goal” he’s had all year and he is:

    Wearing the C
Averaging 20mins a game and is a regular on the PP
TAKING UP $7 MILLION DOLLARS ON THE CAP

AND ALL HE DOES IS ADD “PILE ON” GOALS, WHEN THE PRESSURE ALL THE PRESSURE IS FINALLY OFF HIM

HE IS THE ANTITHESIS OF “BIG GAME PLAYER” AND IS CRIPPLING THE TEAM, THE SOONER TORTS REALIZES THIS, THE BETTER… I WISH TORTS WAS HERE EALIER SO HE COULD HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT EARLIER.

  165. bull dog line on

weight gave us tikkanen, amonte gave us matteau, and noonan. i think these worked out fine. for the rangers. i dont care what they did after they left.
i give sather a B plus for the trades and avery today. much tougher team to to play against right now. built to make a run in the playoffs. ( if they make it)

  166. Salty,

I totally agree with you on Prucha, and even though I was a Renney supporter, I’m totally willing to admit how he royally screwed Petr Prucha out of what could have been a really, really good NHL career, or at least stint with the Rangers. He took away minutes, then made him watch far too many games from the press box. Prucha was, and probably will always be a streaky scorer. But he does have a nose for the net and he certainly provided more bang for the buck than our supposed “superstars.”

  167. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

First of all,if we don’t trade Amonte and Weight and James Patrick we don’t get Larmer,Noonan,Mattieu, and Tikkanen,oh and of course no Stanley Cup either so stop with that guys.

Next,Like the Antropov trade only because Torts is the coach now. “coach” Renney would be a disaster with this guy.He is like most Russian players(except AO) who needs a kick in the ass every now and then to bring out the best in them.I also think he’ll resign here and if he doesn’t,fkuc him and move on with Grachev and/or a free agent.

Morris is a decent player who’s one draw back is that he has never been the offensive force people thought he’d be when he was drafted. He is a solid dman who can skate well, hit and has good first pass.He also has a good shot from the point. He’s another one who could benefit with a coach like Torts behind the bench. If he doesn’t resign fcuk him as well.I say I’d rather buy out Redden or trade Rozy and sign Komiserek/JBow with the cap room created and bring up MDZ/SAGS next year.

Overall I think they are a better team today then they were yesturday.I just wish they found a way to keep Prucha.I was curious how far he would have come under Torts’s style.

  168. onecupin69years on

I think the coyotes got the better deal,, 3 for 1 , with luck they can trade those guys for picks or other players.
We got in return what Prucha, dawes and kalinin did under renney ,which is a shame because I believe under torts dawes and prucha might have produced more and if you still wanted to trade them maybe the rangers would have gotten more .

But don’t forget sather dealt with gretzky his pal and I think this may be more than a trade of players.

  169. I just scored 1st row, center ice tickets to Sunday’s game vs. Boston. Yay! Hope our new additions impress!

  170. UESBlueshirt on

I always thought Kovalev’s big seasons were as a result of playing on teams where he could flourish. The Rangers demanded more a physical and two-way game during that time of the 90’s and were flat out horrible in his 2nd stint. No surprise that a team with an in his prime Jagr and Francis helped unleash his potential. And Montreal last year was basically a team full of Kovalevs, up front at least.

Amonte was a more curious trade, he already had a couple of good seasons but just didn’t fit in with Keenan’s style. I could understand sacrificing one of Amonte or Gartner but why both? Will never understand the Gartner for Anderson trade, the ultimate rental player that scored a couple of tap-in goals and rode Messier’s coat tails in 94.

Weight might have been the worst out of those deals despite how valuable and good Tik was in his role. Think how thin the 2nd line center position was through most of the rest of the decade. Let’s put it this way, would you rather have had Weight or Nedved for the 2nd half of the 90’s?

  171. Kovalev is/was far from a bust. He was an integral part of the 94 championship team and was every bit as significant as the Leetch, Messier and Richter in that playoff run. He scored some MONSTER goals for us and played like a beast.

While we’re on the subject, Zherdev is not Kovalev, he will never be Kovalev and he shouldn’t be mistaken for Kovalev.

As good as Z is, he’s half of Alex and that’s a compliment.

  172. Salty,

We get it, you dont like Drury. I dont think one person here is happy with his production so you are preaching (screaming actually with all your caps) to the choir.

But again you logic is since we overpay for an underproducer we should do the same for Prucha.

And what the hell is Torts gonna do once he finds out? cant trade him, wont waive him. Best he can do is kick him in the ass and hope he produces…and if he does he will still be better the Prucha ever will.

  173. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

    UESBlueshirt –

I’d rather have had the cup!!

Nothing the team did as far as trades can be questioned because at the end of the day the end result speaks for itself.

    …….

How you have survived in the world past 40 years amazes me. You’re lucky to be coddled in Canada, because if you lived in the United States you would be a mumbling homeless man by now with that 11 year old brain you were cursed with.

I chose my own bet cause it’s +reasonable+ you dumb f***.

I don’t bet with my “guts” like some dumb prick, I bet with my senses which you, clearly lack.

My bet stands for anyone interested. We can go over details if there are any takers.

  175. Of course filly get tougher with cirrillo, and mclaren. Why couldn’t sather pick up mclaren when he was waived,he is big and tougher than all of our d-men except maybe Staal. All it took was a 6th round pick but I guess sather knows best LMFAO.
If you add in Avery I guess we did ok. But it all depends on who the players added play. Don’t get me wrong sather still sucks but he didn’t do bad.Lets face it some wouldn’t be happy no matter what he did with good reason. It will at least won’t be boring renney hockey. Go Rangers!

  176. WOW the drivel on this site is amazing.

on 1 hand people complain the rangers did not get any cap relief for next year but then they say how are the rangers going to sign there RFA’s for next year..

Einsteins if the cap goes down like many of you are saying then all teams will have less money to sign Dubi, zherdev, and others… These rules do not only affect the rangers but all teams…

None of you clowns know what the cap will be next year so relax.

I thought getting rid of Dawes was premature and unwise based on his age, past performance, and salary but we will see how that comes out…

  177. jeffluke March 4th, 2009 at 4:44 pm

    Doodie

“WOW, just found out Buffalo traded Kotalik for a 2nd rounder! MASTERSTROKE by Buffalo. Can’t believe that deal. Can’t believe the Oil would just dump their best player for a 2nd rounder, especially after picking up another good young talent in POS. Buffalo REALLY improved their team today, although, they could’ve done a lot better in the goaltending department.”

-I’m confused. Cole is the oilers best player? Buffalo REALLY improved their team?

HAHAHA, I see we’ve cleared up the “Ales” confusion. You had ME pretty confused. I thought Edmonton did an excellent job of getting some play things for Hemsky and Horcoff… and Buffalo, after spending WAAAAY too much on Connolly pretty much swapped an underachieving UFA (kotalik) with a UFA with delusions of grandeur (moore and his desires for a 3 mil contract). There were a couple 2nd round draft picks involved, they gave one and then got one.

    ………..

My argument is that Prucha could have still been a better producer than Drury, yet the organization still parades Drury around thinking that no one realizes this emporer is not only naked but has meaty sweaty tits and can’t skate over 15MPH let alone score on the million CHANCES he gets.

*If Prucha had HALF the opportunities that Drury has fluffed on since his tenure in NY, he would have DOUBLED Drury’s production.*

If there was any possible way to recreate that, I would bet my SOUL on that. Unfortunately, there is just no way to ever know for sure.

  179. *SUNDIN’S GHOST = BEER ME!*

I’m almost sure of it! Hates Prucha, Loves Voros!

Kudos to all who listed Amonte, Kovalev, *Savard,* Knuble, etc… because the Rangers gave up on those schlepps and they proved nothing! Haha.

Brandon is again someone’s tool-boy. Greg L has no idea what he’s talking about, per usual.

And Salty gets P/O’d… hahaha, whoa. Go Get em brotha.
You know I agree with you, but I think some of those people are simply a lost cause. It’s like fighting a 400lb man from eating chocalate cake.

  180. Whoever said the argument is that Prucha should be overpaid: NO! Not at all.

My problem is two fold. Some of you jackasses (including many in the media) THOUGHT Drury was an elite player. You all believed Rangers commercials and some nonsense about little league championships. Folks, you got your head where it don’t belong if you think he’s in any way “elite.” Point one.

Point two, Prucha for $1.6million was NOT a problem. Give him his ice time and he’ll save you $5.5million by having the same production as Drury… but as Salty pointed out, some of you dumb azz clowns can’t see you were WRONG about Drury! Hype! Get it? Prucha actually has some skills. Understood?

  181. These trades aren’t that bad. I was sad to see Nigel and Prucha go; I thank them for their time.

If Antro isn’t resigned, then this tea goes after JBo and Gionta.

Rangers fans are very reactionary; it’s in our nature. Remember that Torts front loads ice time so the top 9 guys being Gomez/Drury/Dubi/Cally/Nicky Z/Nicky A/Nas/Avery/Korpi will get a lot of time.

If they can resign Antropov can you imagine having 4 Russians as our top 9 forwards who are over 6’3”…that’s size!

  182. Sundin's Ghost on

“Kudos to all who listed Amonte, Kovalev, Savard, Knuble, etc… because the Rangers gave up on those schlepps and they proved nothing! Haha.”

You sputtering meatheads. And this goes for Salty, too. The point was made about players who never lived up to expectations that were traded away, not GOOD players who were traded away! Everyone knew Amonte and Weight were good players! There was no debate there. The point I made was about MARGINAL players who were traded away and Ranger fans saying they’d be big elsewhere!

Holy cow. I’ll draw you guys a picture next time, maybe that’ll help.

  183. Sounds like ‘ol Salty peanutz is a Jam Tart!!! HAHAHAA yeah , your a smart one….yeah keep opening your big mouth about Drury when we all know the ovious…Yap and Flap , go beat a dead horse somewhere else . Don’t matter what country anyone is from you will always be a worm.

  184. Brandon = Beer Me = LI Joe = Greg L = Sundin’s Ghost = who’s next??

Doodie, are these your guys? Lol.

    *BEEER ME!*
Hahaha. Its awesome he comes here and reads, probably does post as Sundin’s Ghost, but he was so wrong about this team and he’s such a renney grundle cuddler that he doesn’t even have the cachones to come back. At least he KNEW he was wrong though, some of you just don’t get it… so be it.

Us who did and DO STILL get it couldn’t stand out above the rest if you weren’t here, so i’m sure it’s good there are dullards. There would be no sun if the rest of the stars were just as bright… thanks guys!

  185. Sundin's Ghost on

I despise Tom Renney as a coach, so that’s yet another thing you’re getting wrong. Maybe you should lie down for a while.

  186. Amazing how so many of you go on and on about Petr friggin puck. He’s like the little brother none of you want to see leave the house. But beleive me, it was way past his time.

Good Luck Pruchs, you gave us some awesome times no doubt, but the goal is to field future forward lines that can score consistently.

By the way, you can always come home again down the road, if Avery can anyone can….

  187. Yes im now convinced that Salty Peanutz is whacked!! Prucha is just as good as Drury!!?? Yeah thats why we got a Defenseman who has no points for him and 2 others…you make me sick..Salty is my friends a in the closet Islander fan…I spotted it out 6 months ago…beware hes on the other side!!!

Go Rangers Beat Salty’s team tomorrow!!!!! Come on Ill bet you on the game tomorow you pathetic excuse for a Ranger Fan!!!

  188. *BEER ME* (Sundin’s ghost)

You’ve been proven wrong on absolutely everything bro. Explain Marc Savard to me, huh? Probably best center in the East… Rangers gave up on him. Get the point? I’m just at a point where I hate reading dumb people’s posts. I really might only read those who’ve been here awhile, know their stuff, and are not named BEER ME or share his sentiments.

  189. Its crazy to think that maybe 2 years from now the Rangers will have Gomez and Dubi passing to Zherdev, AA, Grachev, and Antropov.

What a sweet 1-2 line combo

  190. Well tomorrow night is gonna be DAMNED EXCITING!

like the trades or not, we’ve got 3 new guys, new coach, new feel, and only a limited amount of games.

    GO RANGERS!!!!!

(are we gonna see any Phoenix Prucha Jersey’s in the Garden over the next month? Sad to see his heart, tenacity, and shot go, but not nearly as sad as others. He had some SERIOUS puckhandling issues, his only “move” is a toe drag if he’s one-on-one with a defender. Other than that it looked like his stick was made out of anvils.)

  191. the bottom line is the rangers still have some young guys on the big club with some upside they are all 24 or younger; staal, girardi, zherdev, dubi, cally, and korpokoski. that is 6 guys. henrik justturned 27, then the yhave 2 russians who may be big time scorers down the road in grachev and AA. the death of Cherapanov is a huge loss. This is pretty good talent but not eye popping.. the cap situation for the next 3 years is not great. the only other asset the rangers have is they appear to have some young D men in the minors with upside.. They need some of the young guys to develop big time else they will be middle of the pack for years and years……………..

  192. Some of you never learn. Good players actually produce, not have their fan club make excuses for why they don’t produce year after year.

We won’t re-sign Antropov. We have $42m in 10 players signed through next season…

  194. You mean Drury isn’t the second coming of Christ? If you can point out one person in the last 100 posts where anyone says Drury was an elite person I will give you a cookie. otherwise ask yourself who is the dumb azz clown.

I never said he was an elite player…that being said he is better they Prucha will ever be. So what does that say about Prucha? Is Drury worth what he is being paid? no. And I dont think Prucha is worth 1.7…esp if the cap goes down. Unfortunately we are stuck with shitty contracts and have to deal with it.

Amazing really, all this effort and energy put into a marginal 20 goal scorer. And I like they guy, but you would think it was he was the elite player with all this lip service.

Grachev is the only hope in the system, but again he is dominiating the ECHL, your mom could dominate in the ECHL if she was 6’4” and knew how to skate

if you know so much youd realize that GRACHEV ISNT IN THE ECHL!!!!! he is in JUNIORS….the ECHL is a PROFESSIONAL LEAGUE. greg moore has fallen off, PA isnt going to be a ranger, as hes a ufa after this season. AA is STILL YOUNG! so dont judge him so quickly. we still have stepan who is a few years away, sanguinetti and Del Zotto are looking good.

Sather did a great job today, he didnt trade any of the PROSPECTS. Dawes wasnt going to be used after getting avery and antropov.

amonte wasnt given up on, they traded him to try and make a cup run. i think that worked out for us. a stanley cup? or tony amonte? hmmm id choose a stanley cup.

  196. * Good Luck Pruchs, you gave us some awesome times no doubt, but the goal is to field future forward lines that can score consistently.

That’s why they got a rental defensman who will play 18 games and peace out?

That’s also why they have Drury and Gomez for 3 and 5 more years? Bingo. You all don’t get it.

    *DRURY AIN’T THAT GOOD!*
It’s not this year, Greg L! Drury sucks period. Stop listening to Joe and Sam! Watch another team play! Turn off the MSG COMMERCIALS! I hate people who buy this hope, you’re all mindless dopes.

  197. ANtropov made $2.0 mill this year, he is not getting a big raise next year especially if the cap goes down.

again if the cap goes down it affects all teams not just the rangers….

    ………..

Actually, they don’t come around here anymore because Salty, wd40, Ford and myself debated the hell out of them and *who was right?* Take a guess? Who’s still around here?

  201. Moments before finalizing the Morris deal:

Sather: I here you guys are looking for some offense
Other GM: Yeah..we are..what do you propose
Sather: How about Zherdev for Tyutin and Backman

  202. Dude, all you ever say is how right you are and how wrong everybody else is. Get over yourself! We don’t care!

  203. Those two guys ( grave9 and lijoe) are still around ..maybe not LIjoe , he was real , but I didnt care for him. Try to get rid of me!!??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAA yeah thats a hot one!!! GOOO RANGERS GOOOOOOOO WHOOOHOOOO time for AVERY AVERY AVERY !!!

  204. Carp-What is this conditional pick for Antro? Can you do some snooping and find out? LOL

A few more questions; so if there are injuries, who gets the call as this team has only 21 players. Do AA and Potter get first cracks or do Voros and/or Bell get to ride the Greg Moore Highway?

Also, Keenan hated Amonte and treated him like crap. He was sacrificed for the Cup run; it took Amonte like 2 years to recover from all the mental anguish Keenan caused him, check out his stats.

As for prospects; Hagelin is still here, as is Sauer, and Kundratek is intriguing.

Also, for whoever said AA “didn’t impress” (I’m his #1 fan so don’t mess with him LOL) yeah the kid is all of 20 years old, can’t buy a drink, and has like 24 goals and 60 points already, plays a solid two way game, and camps in front of the net to deflect pucks….yeah, that’s real bad. He said in that interview I linked that he’s gonna fight and claw his way onto the Rangers if need be.

Remember him and Grachev (and Petrov too who the Islanders smartly nabbed) should have been first rounders if not for this transfer agreement nonsense.

  205. You mean Drury isn’t the second coming of Christ? If you can point out one person in the last 100 posts where anyone says Drury was an elite person I will give you a cookie. otherwise ask yourself who is the dumb azz clown.

    ……

Unfortunately, those of us here don’t run the team. That’s why we complain about *those who do run the team*, which is essentially what I’m doing, although it often means taking out those who oppose me along the tangents I go along on the way to my point. Nature of game I suppose.

Greg L… I’m not an Asperger’s sufferer like you and I don’t *take stupid bets*. I know the Rangers will sodomize the Isles (and Drury will get his empty netter so the team can pad his 11 goals).

It honestly must suck being an 11 year old in a 40 year old body. Let me know when you come to NY, I think my pals and I would get a kick out of feeding you beers at a Ranger game and seeing what comes out of the mouth of a 40yr old with Asperger’s… and hurry because I don’t think you guys usually live that long… you’re probably on borrowed time as it is… ;)

  206. BTW the Sharks getting Moan was BRILLIANT. That guy is a playoff performer extraordinaire.

  207. I know Greg L, we’re stuck with you like herpes. It’s not pleasant, it really isn’t. But you’re such a diehard fan. You don’t know anything about the team, but you’re a diehard.

Lets go get that cup, maverick!

  208. Alex B I hope you are wrong.. Let’s be honest for this team to go anywhere Torts is going to have to be a magician and Henrik is going to have to show us he is a top 3 goalie in the game…

the underachieving of the big 4 signings really hurts…..

dubi has played hard this year but not produced they need him to be a mid 20’s goal scorer and he is not close to that yet…

zherdev may spend his whole career being like Kovalev a mystery man. Lori is a first year guy looks good but you cannot expect the world from him..

I laugh at the lecavalier rumors and other nonsense like maleone for mark staal. Mark Staal is basically untouchable.

the offseason for the rangers will be busy no matter what with so many rfa and UFA’s sather will have to chance to right some wrongs but I will not dream that he turns into Lou in the offseason.

BTW Gionta stinks so why would the rangers want him????

  209. Give up on life before you populate the earth with even more dumb people.
    …..

That would involve sperm ever getting near an egg, let’s think rationally here.

    jk jk

  210. good god yall are bugging out bigtime… this team is much better off than it was yesterday. even looking at the future and the RFAs/UFAs they have to lock up.

hopefully Tort will make guys like Redden, Drury, Blowmez, and whoever else is slacking watch some games from the press box. Gomez for sure, as Renney let Gomez ride himself into the ground letting him play out of shape and injured. BENCH YOUR PLAYERS IF YOU THINK THEY ARE INJURED OR CANNOT CONTRIBUTE!

And maybe trade one of those big 4 next season if you can… package in a #1 pick and a prospect for Drury/Gomez, who cares.

Rangers had a good day today.

  211. “Rangers had a good day today.”

All in all… I suppose I’d agree. Would have been good to off one of those crippling contracts though.

  212. Good moves, not great, but they are parallel moves financially and are non-effective going forward… by the way some of the faithful talk about a certain player no longer here I wouldn’t be surprised if the suicide hotlines have been blowing up…

If this was fantasy land and the Rangers traded that certain player for Kovalchuk or the like, there would still be crosses burned!

    18 games… Let’s Effin Go!

    Stuart-

I think Dubi’s real game and offensive confidence was almost destroyed by Renney, like every one he touched, they just turned to or were turning to shit.if you look at his stats this year,he has 31-32 pts so far with 18games still to play.He only scored 40 pts last year so he’s got a decent shot to at least match last years numbers.Maybe even surpass them because of what Torts’ system will do for not only him but the rest of the players. They are definatly playing much better hockey and the amount of scoring chances has increased substantially.

I agree with you on how bad the big 4 played so far,but they are playing better now and Redden actually looks like a different player in the last three games.

Plus don’t underestimate the positive impact that Avery will have on the team. He’s familiar with most of the guys and with the exception of the minor league backup goalie, the rest of the guys genuinely seem to like himand the feeling is clearly mutual.

I don’t think they’ll win the cup,and wish that they were able to clear some big time cap space, but let’s face it. If you were a G.M.,which of the big 4 would you wan’t on your team relative to the contract they have?

  215. I think the team today is better than the team was yesterday..

I just dont understand how anyone thinks we got cap relief;it seems like we are where we were… unless we let both of the newly aquired leave via free agency…

…and If that happens then we basically sacrificed a draft pick and either Dawes and prucha ( or draft pix we would have gotten if they signed elsewhere)…an all this would happen because of the Redden-Rozi contracts suffocating us no matter what Sather does to cover up that blunder

  216. I’m actually excited to see Antropov! I feel like this team hasn’t had a real center in many many years.

Well, not true. Dubinsky was a real center before Renney ruined his game. Before Dubi was on his game, the last top-2 line center we had may have been Nylander. Gomez, when he wants to be, can play like a low line-1, upper line-2 center. But we haven’t seen any of that in NY.

  217. Man some people are just in shitty moods. The Rangers got BETTER today! No, these guys aren’t all going to be around long-term. But what the hell could we have hoped to get for Kalinin or Dawes if we waited til the end of the season? They were both spare parts and going nowhere. Prucha I wish we could have kept, but them’s the breaks.

This team’s not perfect, but it’s an interesting time to be a Ranger fan, what with Avery back, Torts in charge, a new system, and now a big new winger and NO MORE KALININ!

Take a breath and get pumped for Rangers/Fishsticks tomorrow… I know I am.

  218. let me straighten out one thing for Stuart. the cap is going to be about the same next year. it is the season AFTER that, that the cap will go down. this is what the league honchos including Bettman have said.

that is why they said on the pundit shows today that guys with huge contracts that go beyond next season are not attractive for GMs to trade for.

  219. stuart-I don’t want Gionta either but I’m using Sather logic which is A) he had great chemistry in NJ with Gomez B)him and Cally are childhood friends and grew up together in Rochester; he’ll be great in the lockeroom C)his speed

  220. Kaspar,
That’s a great point. Not only did we give up a second-rounder for Antropov, we also gave up two RFA’s who would have returned more draft picks to us if they signed elsewhere.

The team today is better than yesterday. That said, Sather was trading to do damage in the playoffs. You don’t get 2 UFA’s and say you’re “building.” That scares me. He crippled us the past 2 seasons, he’s not doing a very good job digging us out in the near future.

  221. basically we picked up alexei yashin-lite and another paul mara (defenseman that was supposed to be offensive but now plays a “gritty” game b/c they didnt live up to their potential) today….whoopee!

  222. I have to agree in saying that our team is definitely better today than it was yesterday… lets look at it this way. Add: Avery, Antropov, Morris — Subtract: Dawes, Prucha, Kalinin and some picks that Sather would have blown anyway. I dont know how you don’t look at that and see a net gain. We got bigger, nastier, and more effective on the blue line. Of course, all of our additions could be busts and disappear after 19 games but for
sake people, a little optimism never hurt. Did anyone actually think wed move one of those ball and chain contracts? Come on now.

  223. The Rangers have once again squandered up-and-coming talent (i.e. Prucha, Dawes) much like they’ve done in the past (i.e. Savard, Kovalev, Amonte, etc.) for a soft big-man and a 6th D-man.

Its tough to see Prucha go, especially because its a result of Renney completely destroying his career/confidence over the last 2 seasons, add Sather’s idiocy and Dolan’s wallet into the mix and you have a deadly combo.

Every perennial contender (Detroit, Philly, New Jersey) build a team through the DRAFT and compliment them with a piece through free agency/trade…for whatever reason, the Rangers have always been the opposite.

At least Prucha and Dawes will get some quality ice time in Phoenix while the Rangers are handcuffed by overpaid underachievers and find themselves in a bind to sign the players who actually deserve to be there (Dubi, Cally, etc.)

Good one, Sather. Continue to mortgage the future for a first round exit.

  225. Leetchhalloffame on

Prucha, Prucha, Prucha. Enough about Prucha. He had his chances and couldn’t score like everyone else on this team. How this punching bag he became a fan favorite escapes me.

  226. How much do you guys see Dubi/Cally/Zherdev getting total? I see like $6.5 million between the three of them; the 4th line gets redone for next year if you ask me.

  227. If Prucha had HALF the opportunities that Drury has fluffed on since his tenure in NY, he would have DOUBLED Drury’s production.

    ****************************************

I absolutely believe this too. The kid has a nose for the puck and even though he was playing with Jagr he ice time and QUALITY of ice time was reduced DRASTICALLY when he went into Renney’s dog house. But I believe that statement wholeheartedly

  228. he became a fan favorite b/c he tried harder than just about anyone else on the team in spite of the fact that his coach and owner screwed him over for 2 seasons. not to mention the fact that he was our brightest offensive prospect in the last 5 seasons and showed he could score and we now only have grachev (couple years away) and anisimov who hopefully can put up numbers in the future

many players would have totally quit if they were treated like prucha was (zherdev for instance did quit on columbus and he got a lot more ice time than prucha while in columbus, antropov another player who dogged it his entire career) yet prucha worked his tail off in practice and in every game he got to play

yea but ur right i have no idea why he became a fan favorite?

  229. I like these moves. I will miss Prucha and his heart and his joy of the game. He always seems to enjoy being on the ice and that is something you can’t teach either. But he is small and this team needs size. This can clear the way for a few “Torts’ guys” in the offseason

Gone are Dawes, Kalinin, Voros and Prucha.

In are Avery, Antropov and Morris.

Fellas, this team just got bigger, better scoring and more “jam” as Torts put it. I’m not saying Antropov and Morris are fighters, but I think we could have a decent “D” when Reitz gets back healthy.

Antropov is no fighter or hitter, but he’s a big boy who will take punishment to score, which we needed, and he’s nearly impossible to move from in front.

In the meantime, our defense is Redden, Rozy, Staal, Girardi, Morris and Mara. Does Torts bring up Potter? Or Sanguetti? as the 7th?

This opens up space in the offseason for Anisimov, Korps, Grachev, UFA’s to make the roster and frees up some money to resign Cally and Duby.

  230. zherdev is far too inconsistent to pay $4.5M a year and that would likely prevent us from keeping dubinsky and staal. id move zherdev in the offseason or let him sign elsewhere if he asks for too much.

  231. Antropov and Morris are upgrades, but short term ones. If Rangers had a LEGIT shot at cup, these would be better trades. I don’t see how Rangers could afford to re-sign them in the summer since Zherdev ,Dubinsky and Staal’s extension’s should be a priority.
who knows, maybe in the summer we can ship redden and gomez to dallas

  232. Pete, absolutely. Part of me is hoping that some team with lots of cap space throws the bank at him so we can get the picks.

  233. Dubi or not Dubi on

So I know Torts’s system is better to watch… But Prucha was STILL my favorite player to watch. I do hate Sather; for the past week and a half I was happy and forgot about how much I hated him. I really really do hate that guy.

Even from a business perspective why trade RFA’s for a UFA? It doesn’t make sense, something I have come to expect from this no-talent has been.

  234. im sorry but i have to laugh at some of the people on this board.

kyle mclaren was a good move? the guy has been in the minors all year. if the rangers got him it would have been a disaster. he was waived because he’s garbage.

carcillo for a 2nd AND upshall? horrendous

and the prucha lovers need to grow up. the kid is NOT THE SAME PLAYER HE WAS WHEN HE WAS A ROOKIE. IT HAPPENS FOLKS

the rangers took out the trash that’s been trash all year (dawes, prucha, kalinin) and replaced it with avery, antropov, and morris. there is no debate we are leaps and bounds better than we were yesterday.

  235. Petr Gretzky er I mean Prucha was hard working player on this team. He had a great rookie year but his play has been on a downward spiral ever since. He was a product of Jagr and his amazing season, not that he played with him all the time but he was on the PP with him constantly. We made serious upgrades to this team. People just need to realize that as hard a work as Prucha is, he is not that good. Just drop the obsession with the guy. But I will add that my second team to follow is Phoenix.

  236. Dubi or not Dubi on

I’m also not sure some of you guys have been watching the games since Torts took over but Kalinin has looked like a different and much better player, as has Redden (Not just because he scored). Not saying that I love(d) either one, but the worst contracts on the team still belong to Drury and Gomez. When Drury had a comment about “As long as Avery plays with heart” BS, he should look in the mirror at his loafing play at half speed all the time backside.

  237. Shoryuken on Wade Redden on

I’m gonna have to stop calling him Antrop—y I guess, unless he sucks.

  238. Dubi or not Dubi on

Prucha plays the same way Callahan does and had Prucha been given the same playing time as Callahan, he would have more goals. Prucha was hated by Renney and Sather has been looking to replace him since his sophomore year (See: Shanahan). I’m really going to laugh when he scores 30 a few times in his career and think of everyone who says how he’s terrible. Um, he has played 10-12 min/game for two years with limited power play time on the third and fourth line, he is supposed to match his rookie season how? Renney played Voros, Dawes, and Korpikoski over him all year. I’m not sold on Korp, but can live with him; Dawes has been bad all year save about 7 games; and Voros is AWFUL! That’s not Prucha’s fault, that’s on the coaching staff for having their head up their collective ass.

  239. Rangers organization is a joke.

How difficult is it to find a quality GM who knows it takes speed, grit and size to win in this league.

    Sather has to go.

You will never win anything when you take one step forward (Avery) and four steps back (losing Dawes/Prucha for Big softie and Redden the 2nd)

Antropov might be 7 feet tall and weighs 300 pounds but when he gets pushed, he stays pushed…like everyone else on this team not name Cally, Dubi and Orr

Do make a move for the sake of making a move…add substance.

I don’t care if Jesus was coaching this team…they will be good enough to sneak in the playoffs and lose in the 1st round.

  240. How about Don Maloney’s day?

He adds Lombardi,Prucha, Dawes and Upshall plus a couple of other guys; 3 draft pix including a number 1…and they can either keep Prucha and Dawes or let them sign elsewhere and take even more pix

He traded a UFA and Jokinen, the backup goalie and Carcillo

  241. if those three were our trash, we took on other teams trash. i liked prucha but clearly sather did not want to resign him, but morris, cmon. and i just dont like giving up draft picks even if sather isnt great at drafting. some of the rangers scouts are decent and id much rather draft a promising kid then have 18 games of nik antropov, who brian burke was dying to get rid of

we got a little bigger today, but to say we improved by leaps and bounds is just wrong. our chances of making the playoffs really didnt change and certainly didnt increase our likelihood for success if we sneak into the playoffs

  242. Dubi or not Dubi on

Well clearly Sather thinks that behind the great leadership of Captain Drury and his cocky partner Gomez, and their Malkin/Crosby-esque contracts, they SHOULD win the cup, right? Oh… Someone forgot to tell him that they aren’t that good.

  243. I will tell you today what many will argue for years to come.

Having SO MANY changes in 1 weeks’ time creates a pretty big issue as to who gets credit and who gets served. Say the Rangers miss playoffs… was it Renney? Was it Avery? Sather? What if the Rangers lose in the third round, would that be a testament to Torts, Avery? Sather’s trades?

Dissecting the performance of this team is going to be so hard and there will be MANY people pointing fingers in the future, but truth be told, there were too many changes to actually point to one as the one definite improvement.

My belief, Torterella was the best change this team made. But again, won’t EVER be able to prove that unless they win the cup in which case it won’t freakin’ matter (easier said than done though! haha).

I know everyone here who night in and night out bitched about Dawes is now suddenly missing him.

Somethings not the same about Prucha, if he starts to score again somewhere (which im saying 90% he wont be giving more than 20goals becasue he doesnt have jagr) oh well then.

  250. True Fans… I understand the point you’re trying to make… but RFA signings by outside teams in exchange for draft picks don’t happen very often… and it usually takes players with higher caliber than those two we just traded away…

I guess we can debate their values and that’s fine… but for a team to risk future prospects or bargaining chips in the form of draft picks for Dawes and/or Prucha would be silly. I just don’t see any team doing that…

My 6-year-old’s favorite players are Lundqvist, Prucha and Dawes. When he got home I was curious what his reaction to the NYR/PHX trade would be. Tears? Rage? He asked why they were traded and I explained how the Rangers got a pretty good defenseman in Morris. His response: “At least they got rid of Kalinin.”

  253. Dubi or not Dubi on

Some people on here sound like the impatient fans who hate prospects and love old guys trying to win NOW! Why can’t we just build a team with our own talent through the draft with some strategic trades in between? Dubinsky, Staal, and Lundqvist (Accident) are the only top flight players we have brought up through the system so I know drafting isn’t really a strong point. Of course people now are saying it’s okay to trade Dawes and Prucha (Two guys who still had some potential), but for a 31 year old free agent? Trade three players for basically an older Dan Girardi? Was this just Sather making a trade so we know he’s doing something? If he wants to dump salary he should start by waiving two of the players wearing letters on their chests, not by trading guys in their mid 20s.

you’re basically swapping ‘potential’… at a cheaper price, that you as an organization feel has more of an upside because you’ve already seen what you think the departed were capable of. Now you bring in a few more guys for camp in September and let them see what they can do…

You in the meantime get two veteran players who may have less pressure playing here for the final 18 and hopefully beyond.

  257. Dubi or not Dubi on

Also, shouldn’t we be concerned that Dominic Moore (remember him?) has the SAME number of points (41) as Chris Drury? He asked for 2.5-3 mil and Toronto traded him! He is as good defensively as Drury and is better on faceoffs! I sure hope Drury’s leadership is worth $5 million/year for three more years.

  258. Wow. I could not even read it all. Carp how do you do it? Do you read them all? I am stupider for having tried to read the entire string.

Forget Prucha already. Regardless he is not a Ranger. Enough.

Draft day will be the day Sather will dump at least one but likely two from the Rozi/Redden/Gomez/Drury quartet.
That will allow the young talent to emerge and allow payment to those deserving. But who is going to say that Dubi is worth more than $1M next year has not been paying attention. He had a great year with Jagr and has cooled off with lots of ice time since. (Sounds like Prucha?). He will be the future and will emerge as a solid two-way 20-25 goal scorer and captain of this team. But he gets a small raise that’s it. Zherdev will be lucky if the Rangers want him back let alone anyone else. Korpedo takes a pay cut. Cally gets a raise to $1M too. So there is not going to be a problem with the young core resigning.

Rangers did well today for sure.

All the Rangers’ prospects are centers and defensemen. They have Drury and Gomez stuck as their top 2 centers for 3 and 5 more years, meaning that Dubinsky/Korpikoski/Anisimov/Grachev will never get the meaningful playing time at their natural positions that they should. Hopefully there is room on defense for some guys to come up, but if I see crappy Potter play over a real prospect again, I won’t be happy.

  261. Really late late breaking news:

Toronto Maple Leafs have signed Goalies Pokey Reddick and Roland Melanson off of waivers. More details to follow

  262. on NHL Network they r talking about today’s deadline and which player will make the most short term impact. guess who picked Antropov? NOBODY! lol …i think though, anytime u let go of Tom Redden, dawes kalinin and unfortunately prucha and replace them with Torts, avery antropov and morris, it sort of makes sense to look forward to good things for the rest of the season. Henrik should really start getting hot here.. everything is on him and how good he can be down the stretch…

  263. If the Rangers make the playoffs, they will be a “tough team to beat”.

it will mean they are playing well, their power play will be better, their new coach has them “headed in the right direction”, their deadline deals will have “paid off”, and their goaltender is at the “top of his game”, they will not be “backing into the playoffs” if they make it, they will have come “together as a team” since the deadline…

Have I got all the cliches covered?

as if none of it really matters at all

  265. First chance to comment on deadline day; was skiing and traveling back home. I give Sather a thumbs up overall; two good trades. It was obvious that Dawes and Prucha were not fitting in here, but I would have loved to see more of Prucha under Tortorella’s system. It was just a matter of time for him, though. What a surprise that those two went to Phoenix. Antropov becomes our leading scorer (I know, not literally), so that obviously works well, but still, it’s a question of how much our current guys can flourish offensively under Torts’s offensively-tilting scheme. It’s definitely good to have another physical defenseman in Morris who can also play offense.

  266. vogs – Will any of the Rangers score “a goal scorers goal” during the way to the playoffs? : )

As for Nicky Z and $4.5 million; not in this economy and Zettererg became the new measuring stick with only $6. I say Nicky Z gets $3.5, Dubi like $1.9, and Cally like $1.2. Just a guess.

Also, unless Morris plays like Rob Blake, the dude has like 13 points this year, he’s not exactly in a position to demand much.

Most likely the 4th line goes through a major change next year. I can see Betts/Sjo not coming back in favor of AA and friends.

  275. Jerkins here is my post from LAST NIGHT! I guess Maloney was asking too much for Doan and Slats wouldn’t give in.

  276. Mako… I did say there ‘may’ be less pressure for the two veterans… Antropov was lambasted in Toronto on and off for the past few seasons… he gets a second chance at yes… believe it or not, a less pressure city than Toronto.

Morris may have some pressure coming here in New York as a veteran Defensmen on a team that’s not exactly the New York Neon-lights names at the blueline… but I still think coming here with only 18 to play in a free agent year on this team right now isn’t as bad as if he was brought in from the outset. He’ll probably put more pressure on himself while he’s here at the end of this season to try to earn his final significant contract on the free market.

    We’ll see…

  277. this is hands down the best nyr blog on the web. thanks to Carp for the OUTSTANDING coverage and updates!!!!

if only the Rangers on the ice played up the level of your coverage we’d all be a lot happier

  278. ok now i know the trades are the kiss of death, Barry Melrose thinks we did good today and we all know how much he knows these days

  279. The big question in my mind is if Sather can miraculously gain some fiscal sense. IMHO not only are Rozi, Redden, Drury and Gomez overpaid, but so is (Blasphemy Alert!) Hank. Sather fell all overhimself throwing money at him, not only the current long term contract at 6.8MM per year, but even the year before at 4.8MM per. No way Hank should be paid more than Brodeur, good as he is he just doesn’t have the track record.

I’m with MikeA above – Sather has GOT to hold the line on the contract offers to the kids, much as we like them. I see a lot of Messier in Dubi, but at this point he is not worth more than $1.5MM – $1.8MM per year for his next contract. Keep it short, 2-3 years, or even qualify him for one year – let him prove he’s worth the big bux before it gets thrown at him. Z is the best talent on this team, but no way an inconsistent 50-60 point guy gets more than the $3.5MM he’s making now, especially with the future cap reduction.

Ya know its funny, much as we hate the Debbies, I think most of us respect them. You don’t see Lou having the contract issues Sather does. Guys accept less than market to play for that team, and why? To get parades in a parking lot?? Sather needs to learn fiscal discipline NOW, or we are terminally screwed.

  280. Those of you who describe Kallinin’s play early on in the season as dreadful were absolutely right. In fact there were many games that he should have been awarded assists on the opponent’s goals, because he frequently passed off directly to them. For the most part both this season and last, he appeared semi stunned to be on the ice. When you have a bewildered defenseman on the ice, you know that you’re in deep trouble.

And again in all fairness, he finally did pull up his game to a respectable level prior to the departure.

He mystified some of us older folks who always wondered at the fact that he was big, he did hit, he could carry the puck, he had a hell of a shot from the point and was one of the few people on the team to unload it during a PP ( in the rare moments when he found hismelf out on the point during one), but he was unable to put all of these talents together with a workable brain exercise, and this is what made him so ineffective. Now he is at peace. Bon chance.
