Drury and Dubinsky on Avery (updated)

671

(AFTERNOON UPDATE: Just want to point out that at practice today, pretty much every Rangers scout and player personnel person was present and accounted for. So, organizationally at least, the Rangers are braced to make moves as they come available. I still think they’re pretty hamstrung, and that nobody is going to take one of their long-term expensive guys (Drury, Gomez, Redden, etc.). The one guy who might have some value as a trade commodity is Roszival, but he’s unlikely to be moved, too. That doesn’t leave a lot of room under the salary cap to make a big splash, unless it’s a rental guy who will be a free agent after the season)

—————

Rangers captain Chris Drury was happy, at least, that he doesn’t have to answer “hypothetical” questions about Sean Avery anymore, and that he doesn’t have to dance around any possible “tampering” issues now that Avery is officially a Ranger.

DRURY:

“I think it will be great. I think the only two things I need to know, and I think the guys in this room need to know is 1) he wants to be here, he wants to be a Ranger. He loves wearing our jersey, he loves living in New York and secondly, he wants to win a Stanley Cup. What more could you ask for out of a teammate?”

How Avery fits into Tortorella’s system:

“I think he’s going to love it, no question. He’s an in-your-face, up-tempo player. He’s always moving his feet and finishing checks and I think he’s going to thrive in it.”

On Avery as a teammate:

“I like to describe him as a guy who literally played his guts out for us last year. He almost lost his spleen, was in the hospital, was laid up, missed the playoffs. What more could you ask for from a guy? And that (injury) didn’t happen on the last shift of the game. It happened I think in the first period of that game. He’s a competitive, fiery guy and he’s going to help us win a lot of big games down the stretch here.”

“I think he’s going be positive. I don’t want to speak for him, but I’m sure he learned a lot this year, on and off the ice, his experience in Dallas and in Hartford. I think he’s going to want to come in here and help us win games and that’s a good thing.”

On the potentially flammable Tortorella-Avery relationship:

“I think it will be fine. We all know who’s in charge here. It’s not us. It’s not anyone in this room. It’s Torts. As it should be.”

———

DUBINSKY:

“He’s going to come in and if he plays the way he can, which we know he will — there’s never been a question — he’s going to help us. So we’re excited for that. We’re excited for him to come and help us win games and help us get into the playoffs.

On Avery in the lockerroom:

“He was good. He certainly had his own style on doing things, but me personally, he never did anything that I wouldn’t want a teammate to do. So, we’re happy to have him back and we’re looking forward to having him help us.”

“We’re not sitting here anticipating anything controversial is going to happen with Sean coming. The only thing we’re anticipating is him coming in and helping us win games, which we desperately need right now.”

Thoughts when Avery left:

“Sean was good to me. He was always good to me. I can’t speak for everyone when I say that and I don’t know if he rubbed guys the wrong way or what-not. But for me, he was good. More than anything, though, whatever happened happened. He’s my teammate again and I always have, and always will embrace every one of my teammates and treat them just like a teammate and a family member. When I heard that he’s part of our team, I’m immediately excited for him to come and looking forward to him bringing his on-ice capabilities and help us win games.”

———————

TO CLARIFY:

Earlier I had written that Dubinsky had harsh words for Avery after he left. I was reminded by Sam Weinman (you remember him, don’t you?) that in actuality Dubinsky’s remarks weren’t so harsh. It was before Avery returned to the Garden as a Dallas Star early in the season when Dubinsky made some comments about how the team is closer-knit and more together than it was last year (with Avery). He and Avery got together a few times in that game, and after the game Avery had nice things to say about Dubinsky, not not about goalie Steven Valiquette, whom Avery called “a minor leaguer.”

  1. Dubinski has become much more of a natural expressing his thoughts. He’ll be an exemplary leader one day if he can keep it up.

  2. I just hope this whole “rehab” Sean went thru doesn’t leave him like Jack Nicholson at the end of One Flew over the Cukoo’s Nest.

    FANTASTIC!!!

Steve Valiquette: “Right now, we’re very businesslike. We’re gonna be winning regardless of who’s in the lineup. It’ll be different for him here because there are some different faces. But we’re all in the same thing together—except for the goalies.”

  5. Repost:

I think back to earlier in the season when we played Ottawa in Ottawa, and Ruutu had a good game for himself, and was taking cheap shots left and right. If Avery was on the team for that game, it would not have happened. Orr tried to fight him, but he wouldn’t, but Avery probably could have made a difference in that game and many others when we had no fire or passion. I am excited for this, and sure that was only one example, but I am sure we can come up with many just like the Ottawa game.

  6. apparently it was put on the nyrnation.com twitter and now lots of others are referencing it… and since Ecklund follows twitter… it could be entertaining perhaps…

  7. Kovalev to Penguins? (e5)
According to sources within the Montreal Canadiens organisation, the Pittsburgh Penguins are willing to part with D Sergei Gonchar, C Sidney Crosby, G Marc-Andre Fleury and C Evgeni Malkin to obtain the services of RW Alexei Kovalev. Remember, you heard it here first!

  8. its great that they spelled organization wrong too. Eklund must not have spell check OR he purposely miss-spells things to make it look like he is sooooo busy

  9. If he’s good enough for Dubi….
then he’s good enough for me

Give me that old time religion…..

    Thanks Carp!

  10. Id do nikki z for kipprusof ignila and a 5th round pick. come glen make that deal.

  11. That rumor Generator is the funniest thing I’ve seen in awhile.

just got more than a few looks for laughing out loud.

    Thanks for that, Agravine.

  12. Oh, and VERY glad to read Drury’s comments.

I’m thinking Avery joins Drury’s line anyway, but that made me happy to read.

    very exciting week ahead.

“If we could have signed Avery for 1.9 million in the summer, he would have never left. So the Avery haters (i cant believe there are some) need to think of it in those terms and deal with him being back. ”

I would have taken him at 1.9 million in the summer before we signed Redden, Rozsival, and Voros to such ludicrous contracts. Voros has been waived, which alleviates some of the problem, but I would still much rather have the cap space (now that we are burdened with those contracts) than Avery.

Speaking of Voros and Reitz, Reitz being waived is a no brainer since he has the broken foot, but Voros is surprising. And look Renney, it wasn’t Petr Prucha that went away! Although, with that cap space cleared, I imagine there are definitely deals in the works, and Prucha is very likely involved in them.

As for Satan, there is a 0.5% chance he clears waivers and frankly I’m shocked Shero couldn’t get at least a draft pick for him. He definitely could’ve gotten AT THE VERY LEAST a 5th rounder for him from a team looking for some depth scoring. Bottom line, I’m shocked if he goes unclaimed.

  14. Commodore to Rangers? (e4)
According to sources within the Columbus Blue Jackets organisation, the New York Rangers are willing to part with RW Nikolai Zherdev, C Scott Gomez and a 6th round pick to obtain the services of D Mike Commodore. Remember, you heard it here first!

Sad thing is i can see Sather doing something like this

  15. Agra – was that from the same source as the “Renney line generator”.. another instant classic

Will Avery get rip-roaring cheers from the garden faithful? I think so..

According to sources within the Montreal Canadiens organisation, the New York Rangers are willing to part with G Henrik Lundqvist and C Scott Gomez to obtain the services of G Carey Price. Remember, you heard it here first!”

I know that generator is a joke, but throw in a draft pick and I’d make that deal in a hot second.

  17. Doodie Machetto on

And just to be clear, it’s not that I want price, but to be able to ditch Gomez would be worth it.

  18. Have I ever mentioned my desire to permanently shatter Eklund’s fingers so he can’t type? The only thing I hate worse than his fabrications are the people who bring them here and then say how “silly” he is after visiting his site regularly.

  19. off topic, but reading the first few words of what carp wrote about “rangers captain chris drury” makes me realize I sometimes forget that he’s our captain. not good.

  20. whats with the dubinsky-avery questions. what happened? did Sean bang his girl or something? I never heared of a problem between them last year

Another post where I wonder WHAT you’re thinking.

If you don’t appreciate how good Hank is, at least go watch Price! No comparison. Sorry, this post scared me though as much as you want to get rid of the dead expensive weight you can’t rid us of the only good weight too.

  22. Doodie Machetto on

Of course Avery will get cheered. Even I will cheer him.

That doesn’t mean that I don’t still think the move is a mistake. We’re going to lose a player I would prefer to keep. Be it Dubinsky, Prucha, Zherdev, or possibly even Staal. Someone we would have been able to keep, we will not be able to keep because of Avery.

Frankly, I would rather have every upcoming FA we will have in the next 3 seasons over Avery except Dawes, Sjostrom, Naslund, Voros, Reitz, and Kalinin.

  23. PruBelongsOnTheIce on

I think Dubinsky spoke out when Avery signed with Dallas… they had some words in the October game.

  24. id do rosi for st louis in a h beat. then bring up snaguietti. torts system relies on quick puck moving an skating. which i love

  25. Doodie Machetto on

True Fans, Price still is maturing and will be a good goaltender. The guy is only 20. Hank is already 26. In six years I think Price can be comparable, although not as good, to where Hank is now.

And it’s not just shedding the dead weight from Gomez’s contract, but from Hank’s too. No way does Price get paid almost 7 million.

Like I said, throw in a draft pick (first rounder or a couple of seconds) and it’s not such a bad deal to start rebuilding.

  26. ..we have NO size up front (Dubinsky, Orr)… I think there will be a move to address this…

…There ought a height and weight requirement to be a Captain in the NHL

  27. Lets pick up Satan to work with Gomez and Naslund…

    Satan-Gomez-Naslund
    Dubinsky-Drury-Zherdev
    Avery-Korpikoski-Callahan
    Sjo-Betts-Orr

  28. SOMERSET

Bergeron barely hits the net. Remember that game against the Isles ? The one where Simon whacked Hollweg, and with like 5 secs left, Bergeron was on top of the slot with a huge rebound, and Hank far out of the crease, and he shot it wide i think.

Defensively, he’s better than Kalinin though.

    PRU

After that game, Aves had some good things to say aboot Dubi, and Hank.

  29. THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN but how this for a 3 way trade

Gomez –> Columbus –> Leclaire & Klesla –> Tampa Bay –> Vinny –> New York

  30. Doodie Machetto on

St. Louis isn’t going anywhere. He’s got a NTC and there’s no reason why Tampa would move him, especially for Rozsival. Forget that rumor.

In fact, forget every single rumor that’s been posted on here re: Rangers trade options.

No, Colorado doesn’t want Prucha (UFA) and a pick for Svatos (under contract).

No, Slats is too shrewd in trades to send that much away for Morris.

I forgot what the third one was, but it was equally bad.

Don’t be surprised if any trades involving scoring forwards are delayed until after noon tomorrow because of the Satan waiving.

  31. Who are you going to miss? Voros & Rietz? Who are we gonna lose because we signed Avery?
    Nobody.

  32. Doodie, while I respect your opinion I don’t agree. That’s fine too, I think I have a more positive impression of Lundqvist than you do.

For 6.8million Lundqvist is probably the best goalie for the price (although every year there’s a new anomaly, Tim Thomas, the kid in the West…), Lundqvist is a top-4 goalie every year. I just don’t think Price will be who Lundqvist is and I don’t also think Lundqvist’s contract is at all the problem. The best player on any team I root for can make $6.8million, it’s the other schlepps and third-round centers/captains/defensmen makings $4, 5, 6, 7, and 8-million who are the waste.

  33. For 1.75mil he is not a bad pickup and much better than the current choices we have

  34. “Hank is already 26.”

Oh. Time really flies when you’ve got a top-flight, franchise goaltender.

  35. Cliff,

As to your question… What did Valli have to say about Avery?
    Answer ……who cares?
I invest too much time & money on my favorite team to care what the backup goalie has to say. Besides, he’s gone after this season anyway.
I would rather this team not have needed Avery, but they do. Tell the boys in that locker room they brought this on themselves with lackluster effort & play. Now deal with it.

  36. For the last 18 games forget about lines being numbered you need three great lines and we can have them…
    Naz-Gomez-Cally
    Prucha-Dubi-Z
    Avery-Drury-Svatos
    Korpedo-Betts-Shoe/Orr/P.A. or A.A.

    Redden-Rozsival
    Staal-Mara
    Bergeron-Girardi

Kalinin for Bergeron, Dawes and pick for Svatos

  37. So what if Hank is already 26. For a goalie, that is not that old, and Brodeur is what? Like 73? HA.

  38. There is only one sizable contract that can POSSIBLY be moved. And that is Roszival. The Lightning have to move some salary. They need a dman bad. Rozi for St Louis is quite possible. Torts LOVES St. Louis, and this could be a move to placate Torts for having Avery dumped in his lap. Do I agree with this move? mmmmmm. . . . no. Can I see it happening? Yes.

  39. DOODIE, re: your 2:12 post. I think you are right about one of those except Staal, he will be signed first. Prucha or Z will go first.

  40. Hype …

Satan is on regular waivers and would cost us the remainder of his contract (3.5 million). Prorated it would be about .75 towards the cap. Then he is a UFA after this season.

I think he could be good for that price as well.

  41. ‘So what if Hank is already 26. For a goalie, that is not that old, and Brodeur is what? Like 73? HA.’

    and a big Fatty

  42. I never wanted Avery gone over the summer…

But with the new coach… the other GLARING deficiencies on this squad and the recent Avery shenanegans (i’m talking about destroying another lockeroom not just the comments) I’m not overjoyed today. I’m hopeful that it works out but skeptical.

That said I’m now defending Avery to my co-workers and will be until the day he’s no longer a NYR.

  43. Orr

he is in charge of Player Relations I think… he travels with them to all the road games.. I saw Dubi throwing a fit at him one time…

  44. Doodie Machetto on

“Are you kidding me?? Throwing away our franchise goaltender? Price sucks.”

Price will be good. The guy is 20, give him half a chance to develop.

As for throwing away our franchise goaltender, what will it matter how good he is if the team in front of him sucks every year since we are loaded with Gomez’s terrible contract for the entire duration of Henrik’s? Not to mention how brutal Henrik’s contract is too.

As for our franchise goaltender, he’s yet to play well over an entire season and into the playoffs. Year 1, fell apart down the stretch and in the playoffs. Years 2, 3, and 4, fell apart in the middle of the season. Yet we still pay him the highest goaltending salary in the league. Is he the bets goaltender in the league? Absolutely not! I love the guy, I think he’s the most talented goaltender to ever wear Ranger Blue, but his contract is awful.

Look what Fatso did for the Debbies. He could’ve been the highest paid goaltender in the league, EASILY. Instead, he took 5.2 million a year to give the team some flexibility under the cap.

  45. # ORR’s Right Hand + Redden, Gomez & Drury’s Jaw’s = Freedom !! March 3rd, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Totally off topic question, but who’s that midget that’s always at MSG. I never saw him up close, is he a kid, or an actual midget ?

You mean the guy wearing #10? That’s Nigel.

  46. Doodie Machetto on

I wasn’t saying Hank was old, I was saying Price was young. 26 isn’t even the prime yet for any player at any position.

I was just pointing out that he’s got 6 years on Price.

  47. Vally looks like Mathew Modine

    …….

    Wow. A+

Doodie i have to agree with you. LQ’s prime years are going to be wasted with our roster situation.

  48. Doodie Machetto on

“Would you rather have Satan or Dawes/Prucha?”

    With their current contract situations:

    Prucha, then Satan, then Dawes.

But if we’re talking signed to any deal that last beyond this season, I’d swap Dawes and Satan.

  49. Staal and Girardi’s contracts expire after next season. Thats when Naslund’s 4 million contract is up anyway so we can spend some

the RFA’s this year are Zherdev, Dawes, Prucha, Dubi, Callahan, Sjo, and Korpi.

Zherdev, Callahan, and Dubi are due for raises

Dawes and Sjo will probably be traded or let go in the summer

Prucha and Korpi should take pay cuts

  50. Carp,

I noticed that Brendan Morrison and Gary Roberts were waived today. Would either of them be a short term solution? Morrison centered Naslund in his prime years in VAN, and he’s a solid 6ft 190lb centerman, and you can keep Dubinsky on the wing, if that’s Torts plan. On the other hand, Roberts is a big guy, with plenty of snarl and playoff experience.

I normally wouldn’t even consider either of these options, but considering the Cap issues, among other things, Slats should quickly, consider all possible options.

    Any thoughts?

  51. UESBlueshirt on

I think Dubi was getting interviewed because earlier in the year when everyone on the team was feeling good about themselves and they were praising the idea of team unity Dubi said something to the effect of “last year not everyone was pulling in the same direction”. This was before their game against the Stars but the press took that and ran with it to assume he meant that as a thinly veiled swipe at Avery.

I have little doubt that Dubi was perfectly fine with being a disciple to the veteran presence that was on last year’s team. He played with Jagr and I have to imagine he had a certain amount of defference to Shanny, Drury and Gomez. Dubi seems like a classy kid and probably thought that was the way to conduct himself so he saw Avery as a contrarian to all of that.

When the news of Avery getting sent to Hartford first hit wire, I thought it would be a decent kick in the pants for a team that had the personality of cardboard and was far too easy to play against. I also don’t buy this whole concept of having a peaceful existence in the lockerroom as being necessary to being a successful team. You can look across all sports and see clubhouses that were full of chaos and bickering (late 70’s Yankees, mid 80’s Mets, early 90’s Cowboys). I tend to think that the concept of lockerroom karma is really more fabricated by the media than anything else. I think a little conflict and strife helps teams get the best out of each other. To a certain extent it creates a little bit of the cliched “accountability”.

At the very least I hope Avery does contribute to the team because they can still use all the help they can get. And that’s the one thing I respected about Avery during his time here. He’s not a point per game player and never will be, but during his 1.5 years in his previous stint with the team it’s tough to argue against the fact that he did find some way contribute. That’s a lot more than we can say about the cadre of people that were brought in to fill his roster spot. Maybe not his role as superpest per se, but players that were given 2nd/3rd line minutes to make something happen and more often than not players like Voros/Rissmiller/Fritsche did not make anything happen.

  52. i don’t know about you guys but i don’t want any of these sloppy seconds
    id rather stay pat.
J-Bo is overrated. he has never been in the playoffs.
Screw St.Louis. He is small and hasn’t helped Tampa the last few years.
No to lese waiver guys. they are there for a reason
no to jokinin. never been in playoffs either
    Derek morris sucks
I want an all Staal team. Trade for Eric and Jordan!!!!

  53. All I have to say is watch that St Louis backhand that he RIPPED by Henke earlier this year.

I would prefer we got a bigger winger, but I think there is juice to this rumor.

  54. Orr

it was in Jersey after a win… some of the guys had left in a car and then all that was left was the bus. Dubi came out to where we all were and was very angry that the car had left without him… he started yelling at the little guy (who by the way I have been told is a jerk though I haven’t talked to him) about leting it leave… anyway after a very short time Dubi looked around and saw a lot of people hanging out there… so he walked up and down the row signing autographs and slapping five until the bus was ready to leave.

  55. St Louis is a true quality player, but is smaller than the guys we already have – we would need to make a smurf-for-smurf(s) trade for him. I’m not smurfing.

  56. Dont worry about Avery cutting into the RFA’s re-signing money.

Kalinin (2.1 mill), possibly Mara (1.9 mill) will be gone and we will be replacing their salaries with Potter (545 k) and Sangs (855 k) next year.

That alone gives us 2.6 million to spread between Dubi and Zherdev.

Dawes will probably be replaced by AA next year (which is a wash in salary).

Then we just need to resign Callahan, Prucha and Korpi which shouldnt really be significant pay raises

    Possible next year roster:

    naslund – gomez – zherdev
    dubi – drury – avery
    prucha – AA – callahan
    korpi – betts – orr

    rozy – redden
    girardi – staal
    potter – sangs

Whats the name of our prospect that is actually good and progressing? “grechav” or something?

    …………

You make the point that the team in front of Hank will never be as good as Hank: Agreed!

You make the point that Hank has never been amazing for 82 games + 16 playoff wins: Agreed!

But what are you expectations? He’s been nominated for the Vezina three years running now! He was on this year’s all-star team! His career SV% is like .913 … Do you remember what was here before Hank?! Are goalies flawless in your world?

I don’t think your expectations are appropriate AND i think you’ve been jaded by him. Faulting HIM for the Rangers not winning the cup is a weak argument to make, at best. I think that argument loses all its strength when you realize he’s been considered to be a top-3 goaltender by the rest of the NHL.

The other problem with your argument is that his contract is the largest in the NHL for a goalie (by about 200K), but that’s also because his is one of, if not the, newest. Over time his average salary should progress towards the bottom end of the “elite” goalies.

I’m still flawes by your argument and logic though. You are jaded.

  59. Evgeny Gratchev. Will be a good Complimentary Player that goes to the net and shows defensive awareness. Don’t think that he will create offense without a good center though

  60. Hank is great, but no goalie should make more than Brodeur. Imagine that extra 1.5m to sign a better d-man than Redden or Kalinin.

  61. its really sad about Cheraponov. we would have had a dynamic trio of russians in him Gratchev and Anisimov. I think when you look at them the other two would have made up for Cheraponov on the back end as well as complimented his game by creating space with their size and going to the net

  62. The quote from Torts today said about he, Schony and Slats know the team is lacking size up front and on the backline – i doubt we’d be trading for Martin “the midget” St Louis if thats the case.
Derek Morris? Pronger? God knows who they are looking at up front?

  63. “lol Vally hosted the 50 greatest moments at MSG…”

    LMAO!!
he was the man in Bye Bye Love

  64. UESBlueshirt on

Yeah Marty StL is small but I’d be surprised if any of our small guys turn into anything close to what he is now, let alone 5 years ago.

They are small up front, no doubt about that. However it seems that the Torts style is, which StL is very familiar with, built around speed which he has in spades. Voros was big but he couldn’t keep up, same with Reitz. I guess if we’re going to be stuck with a couple of lines of smurfs, might as well have the best smurf available.

  65. wow. great quotes today. Carp is in reporter overdrive

good to hear that Drury and Dubi are welcoming Sean with open arms.

before Avery opens his arms in front of Marty. lol

  66. Torts has publicly asked for a bigger player to be acquired but i am sure he wouldn’t cry about getting MSL. I really like Antropov put Burke’s asking price is insanity.

  67. Hank is the best goalie we’ve ever had since Richter knocked his head.

That’s all I can say about that :)

  68. we need “good” size..a very tough commodity to come by.. I hope “slats” dosent overpay (i.e. 1st rder) for Antropov (soft) or Tchukuk (old)… Frolov, is 6.2; 210lbs and would be a nice addition – still would need some addl grit, but he puts the puck in the net

  69. …you mean since Richter busted up his knee, then busted up his other knee, then got knocked in the head, then took a slapshot off his ear, then got knocked in the head again…

Poor guy had some tough luck…wonder how long he really could’ve played.

  70. Come on people, stop questioning Henrik Lundqvist. Please take a look around the NHL. There are so few teams with solid goaltending, let alone elite goaltending. Tortorella himself said the goaltender is the most important player on the team.

Hank is world-class, and he’s 26. THAT’S why he makes more money than Brodeur. The guy’s been a Vezina finalist EVERY YEAR since he came into the league. I have no problem paying for elite talent at the most important position in the sport.

  71. Speed Ranger on

    RE: Crosby

Shouldn’t we wait to see if this new system even favors goal scorers and playmakers? I mean, Renney’s didn’t, Crosby under Renney might have had a dozen goals and 20 assists over an entire season.

  72. Agreed with Hank.. he is world class and can lead a playoff run.. we wouldnt have a worry about his contract, if not for the other contracts “slats” has put out there…

  73. yeah really

Are some of you actually bitching about Hank and his salary?

Yeah widh we kept weekes? Are you kidding me?

YOu pay for what you get= Hank and his salary. He IS worth it.

  74. I’m crapping my pants now that Avery is back to get in my face. I got a few easy shutouts that my team was solely responsible for, but now I worry that I’ll have to dive like a submarine now that Avery is back to harass me.

he gets me off my game, and the Rangers took us to school last year, so I hate that little pest.

I just hope the refs will keep bailing me out with phony calls after I flop like a dead fish. that scam gets ‘em every time.

  75. UESBlueshirt on

Ah, but DiPi is less of a cap hit than Redden and about the same as Rozi…sad but true. By the end of his deal his cap hit won’t be too much of a hinderance. And it’s always funny to see the Isles try at something and then fail miserably. Like when they tried to get Wade Dubi back from Russia and he was claimed by the Blue Jacets.

  76. True – “Over time his average salary should progress towards the bottom end of the “elite” goalies.” You could kind of say the same thing about the Gomez/Drury contracts which I’m sure is what Sather was thinking in a rising cap environment. Albeit, not the “elite” part.

Pavel – “Imagine that extra 1.5m to sign a better d-man than Redden or Kalinin.” I do kind of agree with that statement, for every dollar you’re spending more than the average starting goaltender you have to pull it from somewhere else. You either get a worse defenseman or lesser forward, both of which put more pressure on Lundqvist.

Speaking of Kalinin and even though I hate the plus/minus stat, I’m actually impressed that he was able to pull it back from -19 to -7 despite the Rangers going through a truly awful stretch. After a dreadful start, he’s been decent of late.

  77. FACT: Goalie is the most important position in the sport. And the Rangers are TAKEN CARE OF AT THAT POSITION.

How about we complain about paying Gomez and Drury TOP MONEY, as opposed to HENRIK FREAKING LUNDQVIST, who actually deserves it!

    Jeez, people.

  78. A new coach, bringing back Avery, Great PR by the Rangers. Now, I am sure the playoff invoices for us season ticket holders are in the mail. They want their money $$$$$$$!

  79. Doodie Machetto on

MSL has a no trade clause and said a month ago he’s not waving it.

But if we could land him for Rozsival I would soil myself in excitement.

  80. I hope Avery keeps his mouth shut so he doesn’t get suspended for the rest of the season. He needs to stay under control. He should learn from his former teammate Ott…..If you get mad, don’t say anything, just gouge the guy’s eye and you’ll only get a one game. AND your teammates will defend you too.

Good to know how much classier the Dallas locker room is now since they booted Avery.

  81. …and to think that the original NHL trade deadline passed 25 minutes ago. All this waiting and nothingness sucks.

  82. looking at all the rumors sites, there is very little mentioning the Rangers (other than the Avery claim).. Slats is probably taking his afternoon nap.

  83. Doodie Machetto on

I’m not saying he shouldn’t be paid a lot, just that he should be paid less than what he’s getting, that’s all. He shouldn’t be the highest paid in the league.

But anyway, the whole discussion was just based on a hypothetical which basically states my belief that as long as we have Gomez’s contract (in addition to Drury and Redden), it doesn’t matter how good Hank is because we ain’t winning anything. End of story. That’s what I hate about the Avery move. Clear cap space to resign our young talent to long term deals. Not tie it up in a guy who will wear out his welcome within the next year and a half.

  84. I’m sorry if this has been mentioned before- but could Avery’s second stint be phrased as: “Sloppy Seconds- The Return of Sean Avery”?

  85. PruBelongsOnTheIce on

Aves said something about Giannone’s wife, I think I read somewhere.

  86. Mark (the orginal) on

So I am going to assume nothing big happens, and since Torts mentioned wanting some zize I will say we go out and get Chris Neil, which would make Colton Orr playing every night not neccessary.

  87. I’m sorry if this has been mentioned before- but could Avery’s second stint be phrased as: “Sloppy Seconds- The Return of Sean Avery”?

    …..

    Nope, that’s totally original.

  88. jeez, the lightning gave Ryan Malone $4.5 for 7 years…I was going to try and justify getting him, but that’s a lousy contract, as well

  89. I know he isnt very good. But he could be a checker and is hanks brother. I am sure that he will be a ranger at some point

  90. Sure, let’s get Joel Lundqvist. He’s Hank’s brother, after all. He can play on a line with Marcel Hossa and Fedor Fedorov, and then we can plan the parade.

  91. So…you want size, eh Torts? Well, Gordie isn’t the guy to help you out, because it was him and his staff that ID’d the size they wanted…Rissmiller & Voros. The former banished to hartford without much of a chacne, the latter clearly cannot skate well enough. So, that begs the next question, how much say do the scouts and coaches have in personnel decisions in the off season? If Renney is correct per the NY Post article…a decent amount. So, that means 1 thing – the scouts, GM, Asst GM, DPP, and coaches are not/were not on the same page, which means trouble as we have seen here.

  92. I am just saying that is a matter of time before he is a ranger. You all know that it will happen.

  93. I didnt say that he was good. i just asked when you all think that it is going to happen

  94. Btw if you think that we will see another Stanley cup within the next 30 years then you havent been paying attention to history

  95. We will win a cup within 30 years but IMO, we won’t reach the finals anytime soon.

  96. Doodie Machetto on

I would’ve given Malone 4 over 6 during the summer. I had been saying that the entire offseason leading up to the trade and sign. He’s a big guy, can put the puck in the net, and can be nasty when he has to.

    Instead we got Naslund.

    Although, I’ll take Naslund’s 4 for two over Malone’s 4.5 for 7.

But I would’ve taken Jagr at 5 or even 6 for 2 over both of them. Hell, if we paid Jagr that much we might not have picked up Redden. That’s a victory in and of itself.

  97. anyone have a link to see daily NHL transactions?

I’m wondering who else is on waivers today not covered by the TSN article.

  98. hey, that’s right. there are a lot of games tonight. and you can look for some guys to be sat out rather than risk injury like Guerin, Morris etc

that gives an indication of who is trade bait

of course, some teams will play them anyway because they need a win badly to stay in the race.

  99. Mako, I was referencing marginal players with famous brothers who have played for us previously. Balej doesn’t fit.

By the way, did you guys know that Hank is already 26?

  100. Agravaine
Yeah, someone posted a “potential deal” for Crosby involving Hank. Yeah ok.

  101. GC – That backup goalie is very important. Who else is going to carry the bags of pucks to practice?

  102. Rob C – I’m sure it’s more a Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo reference than it is Minus the Bear. Awesome band though

  103. bernie madoff on

how about taking off the green eye shades and focusing on the key stat, wins.

  104. lol Nelson…

wait that was me… it had a link with it… the link brings you to a rumor generator mocking Eklund like the line generator… hold on I will look for the link again it was a fun sight..

  105. Doodie Machetto on

“how about taking off the green eye shades and focusing on the key stat, wins.”

Because there is no shootout in the playoffs. Look at our “wins” that way.

  106. Yea, it was the movie reference. It’s used on fark.com all the time. I’ll check out MTB, sounds interesting.

  107. here is another one…

    Semin to Devils? (e4)

According to sources within the Washington Capitals organisation, the New Jersey Devils are willing to part with LW Brendan Shanahan, G Martin Brodeur and a bag of pucks to obtain the services of RW Alexander Semin. Remember, you heard it here first!

  108. I wonder how many Rangers visited Avery when he was in the hospital last year?

  109. Pavel – my fave album by them is Menos el Oso.. I knew that had to be a fark thing.. you really do see it all the time on there.

  110. “Because there is no shootout in the playoffs. Look at our “wins” that way.”

That’s right. It doesn’t much matter that, the vast majority of the time, our guy is better at stopping breakaways than the other guy.

  111. Kasper- U are sooooo right!! These silly trade value ideas even if people are joking get annoying after awhile. I’m out trying to be a prick but I can’t take it anymore. LOL!!

  112. Agravaine

Are you sure about that. I was told nobody did. Could be wrong though.

  113. Speed Ranger on

As for visiting Avery in the hospital — the Rangers packed up and headed to Pittsburgh that night or the next morning, so if they didn’t make it it’s not cuz they were sleeping late.

I tried to get my section to march en masse on St. Vincent’s after the 3-0 Pens shutout, and Jagr’s last home game, but there was little interest….. Oh well.

  114. I am fairly certain I remember hearing that several went… Drury and Dubi’s names come to mind at least…

I know I heard Shanny say he was going to the hospital to see Sean… he said that right after the game and then headed out…

where did you hear none visited?

  115. Agravaine….I know you are bored, you said as much before as we agreed there was nothing going on.

PLEASE STOP WITH THE ASSININE TRADE RUMOR BS. IT IS JUST AN ANNOYING WASTE OF TIME.

I like to procrastinate from my work (don’t we all) by coming to this blog but the lack of new news has people wasting friekin time. Enough of that rumor maker BS.

Come on. It’s just plain stupid.

  116. well excuse me newman… but I happen to find it just as entertaining as the renney line generator… which I don’t recall anyone ever complaining about… that was equally pointless…

and if I state it is a joke its a heck of a lot less of a waste of time then the people who post rumors and let others try to figure out if they are real or not…

  117. Just another rumor (please no) Gurin coming here don’t know for what.

But gurin makes to much right?

  118. I was discussing avery a while ago with a fellow ranger fan, and I wondered how Avery got along with the guys in the room. He then told me no one visited him in the hospital.

  119. and btw… since you would be checking the blog (refreshing) regardless of whether there were joke rumors or not I didn’t waste any of your time by posting and stating something was a joke… you already did that…

  120. if its all right to reply…

ACD I heard he was supposed to be traded to the Caps but they didn’t clear the cap room… yes I think Guerin makes too much for us to take as is, however if we move some players (which I hope we don’t) they may make space… I think its close…

  121. New Newman thinks he runs the blog and only what he wants should get posted. Ignore him…

  122. “Agravaine….I know you are bored, you said as much before as we agreed there was nothing going on.

    Agreed

Could visit Ecklund for this stuff; tune back in tomorrow gang..

    Go Rangers!!!

  123. No I won’t ignore him, whoever used the fake name becuase Newman and Kaspar both are very entertaining and post very valubale posts quite often…

I was having fun with a joke… I only posted two the Crosby one and the Semin one. I think its funny, and thought no harm done since I labeled them as jokes…

I won’t post anymore jokes so as not to waste anyone;s time (becuase the Seinfeld quotes and Renney Line Generator were clearly wasting no one’s time) its just a civil, not funny would have been appreciated…

  124. PruBelongsOnTheIce on

that was short lived, but if I knew who that was I would laugh at him… and make him cry again… and then show him a picture of Avery… or better yet video footage from the playoffs last year. He basically called and said it was mean what he did to blo-mart in the playoffs and that he thought Rangers fans felt the same way. That was all he said. He sounded sad.

  125. Sources tell TSN neither Dominic Moore nor Nik Antropov will be in the lineup tonight when the Toronto Maple Leafs host the New Jersey Devils.

Thanks Burke for handing the f—ing Devils another gift.

  126. Yea, clearly its Burke helping the Devils and not acting in his own team’s best interests

  127. Well, I for one thought the Ek Generator was funny as hell – especially in light of how many on this board scurry back here to print the equally crazy “trade rumors” from eklund’s site.

I thought it was a great poke of fun at that and I appreciated your posting it.
I even thought it was funnier than the renney line gen.

    viva la generators!

  128. For the record, I didn’t like the line generator either.

And Old Newman, just stick a sock in it. I like this blog and like all the opinions and thoughts that come with it.

I get fed up with reading BS. Like Eklund’s blog, I never read it. I get enough of that horsecrap piped in here and it annoys the hell out of me.

Equally annoying are people putting their “wish list” lines. Who gives a crap what I think or what someone else thinks what the lines should be? Unless Torts or Sather or Schoeny is discussing line parings, I don’t give a rat’s ass what anyone on this blog thinks the lines will be.

Go start a fantasy hockey team if you want. I don’t want to hear who you think should be the 4 lines. If you like that so and so should play with so and so fine. But all 4 lines plus D. Who cares what you would do as coach?

One guy today had Anisimov or Parentau as a 4th line player? Like those two little rookies will get time in the final 20 games and into the playoffs? Give me a friekin break.

I like this blog to be a great source of info, smart discussion, and the like. I hate this blog as BS rumor source, everyone’s projected 4 lines plus D, and that kind of stuff.

    Just FYI.

  129. Jive-

May point was that the Devils always seem to step in sh!t. That was what I was getting at.

  130. If either of those are traded to the debbies should Burke be fined…or the trade dis allowed

  131. PruBelongsOnTheIce on

    New Newman –

    Couldn’t agree more.

Even better yet, they can go play NHL 09 and make their own lines. That way they’re not on the Internet and their screen is displaying something else so they can’t post nonsense here. But then they’d probably just come back here and tell us what lines they used and how they did.

  132. I think the lines should be:
    Sjo-Drury-AA
    Naslund-Staal-Kalinin
    Gomez-Avery-Valli
    Dawes-Prucha-Redden

    Defense:
    Hank-Rozy
    Girardi-Dawes
    Mara-Mara

    Goal: Dawes

  133. wow … todays blog took a uneventful turn. i leave and come back and everyone is ripping each other for trade scenarios and line combos!!

Isnt the point of a sports blog to share ideas of what that certain, frustrated at times individual would do differently and then discuss those ideas with other frustrated at times individuals??

    maybe im missing the point??

  140. Ford, I’m not dressing you because you’re a UFA, your contract is huge and I am likely going to have to move you.

  141. Dawes is actually triple-shifted. 4th line RW, D, and Goalie. Smurf power!

Actual content: I’m glad Avery is back. I was at that game last season (or season before?) against Toronto at MSG where he KO’d Darcy Tucker, scored a goal or two, etc. The Garden was rocking with “AV-ERY!” chants all night.

That game / Avery’s return , Dubinsky and Avery really played hard against one another!!! Nice to see those two playing together. The way Torts talks is quite spontanious ( mays well say hipapotamus cant spell that either!!) I like The look and the agressive style we now play , I like Avery and I like Voros on waivers .

Hockey was really getting lame and why did n’t we fire Renney last month!!?? All is good cuz we are turning in a scrappy team from a team playin like pansies. I liked Renney and at times I didn’t …Renney turned into a HUGE tomour and needed to be cut out …Id even burn his desk and throw out his old chair!!!

I have to say I took all this bad coaching and crappy stlye of play with alot of pride and I did not give up like alot of you guys …no I wont mention names but I think a few on here are Islander fans posing as Ranger fans , you know ,, guys on the fence..there has to be ..too bad the cowards wont admit it , takes a true fan to stay true to your team and alot of you on here should be ashamed of yourselfs…posting alot of NON LOYAL stuff..who are the true fans on here ..I ‘m really seeing who isn’t and who is actually loyal like me.

  176. Recchi and Roberts also sitting out tonight awaiting a trade

Recchi is the only one who has had a decent season. someone will want him for depth

  177. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

I have to say I’m real pleased to have Sean Avery back!! He is my Ten year old daughter’s favorite Ranger. She was upset when he was signe away, when I told her today that he is back, she had a real big smile on her face!

Just heard this on 1050 espn radio.E.J. Hradek just said that Glen Sather is trying to trade Wadden Redden and his rediculous contract by attaching a first round draft pick to the deal!! If this happens,I’ll be very upset because Redden should be bought out and Sather should be fired for this contract. The one good thing that Sather will be remembered for is hiring Torts and that’s it.

  178. yeah, the oxtail started in the bodega, then went high end into fancy restaurants…I may just cook some up for Thursday’s game..

Yes, we need a trade!.. I saw that Tampa called up a few players from the minors today.. in reality, Rangers are so straped, they just may be done with the avery move.. Isles are close to the league salary floor if Guerin is gone

  179. that would be basically Sather silently acknowledging 2 mistakes. one, Redden, and 2, he can’t draft well, so he trades it.

  180. That would be really sad if we lose a first rounder just to dump redden (esp after LESS THAN one year)- we will prob miss the playoffs and win the taveres lottery fro some other team

but you know what, NOT to watch that Redden clueless look on the ice for 25 mins every game – it may be worth it

  181. Matt K.

  182. alex, who is supposed to be coming back to the Rangers, accdg to that espn radio report?

Sam Pollock- He did not say who was coming back. He did say that this would be really thinking outside the box for Sather.

definitely agree that Redden should be waived or bought out, but look at Sather’s track record since 2000- how much is our 1st round pick REALLY worth to us with Sather still in charge of the pick?

as long as Sather is trying to get rid of Redden SOMEHOW, that’s a good sign…freeing up Redden’s $6.5 mill per year puts us in play for an elite player to fill a desperate need…

look at it this way- it would be like trading Redden/1st round pick for Kovalchuk (not saying it has to be him, just using him as an example)…

getting rid of Redden’s contract would be the best thing that Sather has done for the future of this franchise in 9 years…the only thing that could be better is his resignation as GM

  188. Linda 's battle level is spot on on

sather, even silently acknowledging a mistake? i’d like to see that.

  189. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

Rich- I believe hiring Torts is also a greta move for this franchise and the fans.

I don’t think anyone is coming back for Redden unless it’s some crapy rental that will do nothing for us in the long term. Also with the death of Cherepanov, blowing yet another first round pick can set us back to the point where we will burn up the chance to compete for the cup with one of the best goalies in the league.

In all honesty, I have NEVER liked Sather. I’ve been pretty vocal and have bashed him since day 1.

    I hope you’re kidding there…i sense some sarcasm, so I’m thinking you’re kidding but if you’re not…

Why would how we feel about the GM have anything to do with our loyalty to the team?

  199. Size is over rated but it would help the Rangers
Remember how the Smurfs beat th Flyers one year

Also, it is more important that you paly big then that you are big. Avery plays big – Voros played small (well invisible )

Roberts is old but he is nasty, big and still can score a bit

I would like to get a scorer. If we can get St.Louis that would be great! If it meant giving up Rozi or Girardi or Dawes or maybe a draft pick or any combo of the above

I am not worried about d, we have quite a few on the way up
I think Potter can play in Tort’s system right now

If we get those three, we already have one(Avery), Roberts & St.Louis we can contend for the cup

    & great job again Carp!

  202. Mark (the orginal) on

I love seeing all these guys sit out just knowing the NHL will see a bunch of trades tomorrow, which is always exciting.

  203. NJ.COM: Rich Chere reports Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said he will try to trade goalie Scott Clemmensen before the trade deadline on Wednesday

Let’s hope fatso goes down again, that’ll leave them with Weekes

  204. sure signs you are getting traded tommorow…..

    healthy scratches tonight:

    Nik Antropov Toronto
    Dominic Moore Toronto
    Mark Recchi Tampa
    Gary Roberts Tampa
    Marek Makik Tampa
    Derek Morris Phoenix
    Bill Guerin NY Islanders
    Tom Poti Washinton
    Michael Nylander Washington
    Ryan Bayda Carolina

  205. Mark (the orginal) on

Lou might not trade Clemmensen knowing Avery will get 1 shot at fatso this year, but in all seriousness Clemmensen deserves a trade where he can at least backup, instead of playing in Lowell.

    1-0 Devils

  206. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

    Mark-

I’m not too crazy about it because it kind of takes the drama a little bit out of tomorrow. That said, It’s too bad we are not playing to night so that we could see Rozy scratched, maybe Betts,Dredden,Blomez/Dreary,even Girardi.

  207. Rob E

Yeah they have been trying to shop him for the last few weeks. Maybe that is what the hold up is IF they are trying to get Guerin. If that rumor is true. Actually I dont think Guerin would be a good fit there. WAY TOO SLOW for the Caps speed.

  208. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

    doogie747-

The only player on that list that I’d have even a remote interst in is MAAAAAYYYYBBBBEEEE Antropov, maybe.

  209. Dont know if anyone posted this:

    ********************************

Devils just scored BS goal. That never should have been a goal.

  210. Mark (the orginal) on

Alex- Yea it does take a little out of it, but I like knowing we won’t be sitting here tomorrow, and no trades come in. Yes we know the scratches tonight will be traded, but we have no idea where they are going. I mean Bill Guerin has been a scratch since Saturday, and I think we have heard every competive team in the east mentioned.

  211. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

The other thing I heard on espn radio was that we might be the team after all that gets Guerin. I personally wan’t no part of him. That ship sailed about six years ago when we trid and could not get him. He is now not fast enough nor fit enough to play Tort’s system.I’ll be real pissed if he comes here.

  212. MAKO- i read somewhere (i’ll look for the link) that the hold up with guerin to Wash. was the Caps’ inability to move Michael Nylander’s contract.

They assured the isles they’d make room and then were unable.

  213. Sather would have to pull off the deal of the century for the Rangers to make any sort of move tomorrow.

He has tied his own hands with basically zero cap space.

alex I wouldn’t be interested in any of them either, just thought this new idea of “sitting” a player the night before the trade dead line is BS!!

I guess what we all can do here is watch all those guys be dealt to Eastern teams….we can play martyr and say “he sucks”

(because everyone snickers behind our backs about reddon)

That Guerin to Washington deal is picking up steam again..

  214. Rob E.

Yeah that is what I figured…. Thanks. Weird thing is that the Caps have no problem scoring and Guerin really isnt a huge playoff player. I mean he is ok…

  215. question:

All these players hit the waiver wire today…are GM’s saying “yours if you want them, just pick up their salary”
AND are they then destin to the minors?

Seems if they had given them an extra 48 hours they could put them on the “Re-Entry waiver wire for 1/2 price”

  218. Its Funny
Since 2005-06 we have heard how NTC and worse NMC’s have hampered the Leafs…and yet it seems every UFA in the past two years has gotten a damn NTC!!!

…I mean was Nylander ever that great to extend a NMC to him?

  219. No Country For Old Rangers on

By the way, great call NHL making the deadline on a Wednesday and scheduling like 12 games on a Tuesday. Ridiculous. Tons of players are sitting out around the league and it’s effecting the playoff races.

  220. Steve Zipay is saying the Mark Reechi is on the radar for a ranger draft pick. I thought they wanted to get bigger.

  221. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

Roc- I’d rather bring up a kid from the Wolfpack than trade anything for Recchi.

  222. This trade rumour generator fad can not end soon enough, Im finding myself embarassed just from reading these posts knowing that we’re fans of the same team and read the same blog. Did a bunch of Islander or Devils fans invade to makes us look so childish? Milbury’s butt plug? Renney’s vibrator? I mean, come on, I love Family Guy which is all about stupid being funny and even I cant do anything but cringe when I read this stuff

  223. Alex I agree!! However I would like them to get a scorer that is not waiting for his AARP check!!

  224. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

this is what Zipay wrote——————————-He’d rejoin Torts as an 18-game rental for less than $300,000,” said one person who is hearing that UFA Mark Recchi is a possibility in return for a Rangers draft pick. Also hear Carolina is in the hunt there…..

Names that reportedly are being tossed around: Chris Neil, Nik Antropov, Cam Barker.

Several of the waived players today could easily be claimed: The Rangers should jump at Satan if he slips to them, doubt if he will. Brendan Morrison doesn’t have size, but maybe a reunion with Naslund makes some sense.

As for D, well, David Hale’s name has surfaced again, as it did a few weeks ago.

Not sure anything at all will happen tonight, however…

  225. ralph I agree…

I can’t see anybody coming to the rangers, we have empty pockets :(

    NO RENTALS!!!!

  226. Derek Morris Phoenix = scratch, smells to me like Prucha / Dawes is heading to Phoenix…

  227. Mark (the orginal) on

Ugh Mark Recchi, not worth a draft pick, even a low pick. I 2nd Alex, would rather see a player from the Pack. I think Recchi had something like 5 assists on Sunday night in Calgary, what a way to peak right before the deadline.

Zipay also mentions Dave Hale on the Coyotes, but who would he play for Kalinin?

  228. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

Cam Barker for Blair Betts( Renney’s son) and Dawes would be a good trade I think.

  229. Also, did anyone else read the phrase above “the Rangers should jump at Satan” and sort of do a double-take.

I’m on record stating that Satan should be with the Devils- it’s just plain appropriate…

  230. Derek morris submitted a list of teams he’d accept a trade to, think it was Philly, Wash, and Boston

  231. r we there yet? is it tomorrow yet? all this talk is making me antsy! LOL… Erik Cole to NYR for Prucha and Dawes

  232. Id much rather pick up Hagman over a Guerin, Satan, Reechi, Morrison, He’s under 30, Fast enough for the Torts, good in the corners, bigger at 6 foot 200 for a winger only problem is he’s overpaid

  233. Doodie-True Fans-wd40
    …………….
Riguere, I’m going to agree with Doodie… not so much chemistry. But we are still teammates.

Actually, Salty, Ford, wd40 and I have been on exactly the same page about almost everything for the duration that we’ve each been here.

Greg… was this a pot-shot at me? If it was, say so, and we’ll hash it out. I mean, I can tell you how all that “negative stuff” was actually criticism which is starting to be corrected and is now making the team better… grow a pair, you man-up! I’ll talk about everything I’ve said – because almost 100% has been dead on. A few of us (linemates above) have called this season and previous seasons to a T! Try me, or the other 3, if we’re your beef we’ll admit our stances and put YOU in your place (although *(ZzzZzalty)* Has already done that to you several times…. and if you’re not referencing me (or them), carry on…

  236. Satan was only waived, not demoted.
Claims would not take place until processed by the league tomorrow at 12 noon eastern.

  237. Ah, ok thanks.

TBH, I’ve always wanted Recchi on the Rangers… but I said that 15 years ago lol… he’s not worth more than a 5th, IMO.

    matt,

what did he sign for… because there was some talk that the Dodgers might lower the offer, since they realized no matter how much money they threw at him he wouldn’t be happy

    2 years..45 million.

  242. what u guys think about Erik Cole from Edmonton? i like him… he’s a big winger with a scoring touch… Cole is not having a good season… but then again, who is in Edmonton?

  243. I could see Rechi and Roberts back in Pittsburgh, tear the “C” off Cindy, put her in a corner until her groin is fixed, and lead the team…they seem to play better with her out standing on the side lines, drinking a tim hortons coffee, waving to Don Cherry

yikes I hope Chris Kunitz isn’t the second coming of Ryan Malone….Rechi was perfect the other night against Calgary, 5 assists, Vinny is looking around tonight wondering who is to pass to him???

  244. I think a good move for Washington would be to get Recchi. Washington needs guys who have been to the Cup finals and Recchi has been there time and time again, not by any means do I like the Caps, but I think Recchi would fit in well there. As would a veteran defenseman.

I don’t see much interest in either GUerin, Tkachuk or Roberts, they are all just a bit too old and have lost a few steps, whereas Recchi can still skate.

Losing Reitz to injury hurts us. He is a physical defenseman and I thought was playing well. Now we’re stuck with too many soft defenseman in Redden, Kalinin, Rozival and even Staal, Girardi and Mara don’t really take the body. It would be nice to get a hitter on defense.

It’s nice to have Avery back, I think he will thrive under Torts. I wish we had a bigger, tougher center. Drury and Gomez are too small.

I’d like to Antropov and Kaberle to add to Avery, we’d be a much better team immediately.

I’d give up Rozival, Girardi, Dawes, Prucha (or a pick) and Sjostrom to get em.

  245. kaspar
Hey…its better guy with a broken neck than Rechi or Roberts lol

no but seriously …he had two good years after he came back from the injury… and i think with our Edmonton connection we could get him… put him on the wing with Dubi and Zherdev… could be very interesting

  246. So does Sather really think to himself — Hmmm, we don’t need Jagr, Straka or Shanahan, we’re going with youth. Then, 6 months later, does he think, Now I’ve got it, let’s give up our draft picks for some old guys like Guerin or Recchi, so we can solidify 7th place. That’s the ticket.

Or does he think, Let’s see, I’ve already taken Gomez, Drury, Redden, Ozolinsh, Avery — a bunch of guys other teams don’t want, and now it’s my favorite time of year — when other teams dump their non-producers. I can bring in some other losers like Satan or Morris. Yippee, I’m a bargain hunter! I’ve already put half of my summer signings on waivers, so I need some more meaningless signings. I’m a genius. I used to coach Wayne Gretzky.

  247. rangers need a big winger who could finish. move dawes and sags for someone young and big who could score

  248. Ugh, Recchi ?? No way !!

Slats, trade our 1st round pick for Antropov, the more i think of it, i can see him wasting it on a bust, so might as well get rid of it for a young player who has a lot of potential, and has size, which is something Nyr lacks.

I bet my right nut, that the Craps do exactly what they did last year, and trade for a goalie. I can definitely see them trying to bring in the Bullan-Wall. I just cant see Theodure taking them to the next level. He’s just not that good. Look at last years series against the Wings, he couldn’t make a save if his daughters virginity was on the line. If he has a daughter.

  249. I like that trade, Betts + Dawes for Barker. But i don’t know if the Hawks would do it.

Tonight sucks, the Flyers are gonna pick up at least a point, same with the Devs. The Cats, and Canes look like they’re gonna win. Not good, not good at all.

Nyr is gonna have to put a string of wins together, and at the very least get on a big point streak like they did last year.

WTF? How can they do that in the middle of the game.

    You ask How…and i ask..WHY NOT?

  257. Why would anyone defend Sather? Have you been paying attention this year or the past nine years? This fan lust to remake the team says it all — the team can’t be very good if no one cares who leaves. The New York Rangers, one of the most important teams in the NHL, is run by an incompetent, disorganized, disinterested fool, who disrespected Jagr, the only reason this team made the playoffs the past 3 years and who saved his job in the first place. Tortorella is fine — and note how Torts distanced himself from the trades tomorrow — and Avery is fun, but those two signings are not a brilliant move on Sather’s part, they are desperation moves.

I’ve seen weirder things. Pitchers traded in the middle of an inning. Players traded after hitting a double and standing on second. Kaberle’s probably on a plane right now. Where he ends up, i doubt God knows..

  261. KC- Bro the only thing I can say about Jagr is he wanted 7 million+ for this season and as much as I love Jagr he wasnt worth it. They went to the well with the same team two years in a row and didnt have what it took to make it to the third round. Where Sather reall screwed up was not getting better at the deadline last year. IF they had gotten past Pens they may have made it to the cup finals.

  262. Linda 's battle level is spot on on

Greg, I can understand where you’re coming from. We have our own opinions, and we can’t say either is wrong. When I said sarcastic, I mean in the funny way, not a holier than thou way.

I’ve never liked Sather as our GM, and bringing in a new coach and getting avery back does NOT make up for some of the major boneheaded moves he’s made up to this point, that have the team in cap hell and almost unable to make improvements. I’ve been a fan of this team since 1978, through good and bad and horrible, and I really don’t think people expressing their dislike of upper management makes them unloyal/disloyal or a fair weather fan. I’m a Mets fan too, but have no love for Minaya and a lot of the moves he’s made either! But the loyalty to the name on the front of the jersey is always there.

I’ll give you this, if Sather can move one of the crippling contracts, I’ll give him his due for that move. But please don’t ever question my loyalty to the sweater. I’ll be buried in my jersey when the time comes. This team drives me crazy like nothing else besides my kid and my man, but they bring just as much joy too!!

Hey Redden is getting almost $7mm and has done sh*t most of the season. Jagr would have about 50 points right now or maybe a little more. Who knows how many points he would get if he played under Torts. Well, not much sense worrying about it now.

  265. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

after reading kc’s post and the standings spot were in now after every damn team we needed to lose won, or is winning, i have to agree that i hope sather doesnt do like he usually does just to make the playoffs and be a 1st rnd exit. it sucks because we got a great new head coach and avery who will help much more than voros, but we have no damn room for anyone that will really make a difference. hope we just make a minor tweak on d. get a tough d man. we got a coach who will get this team to score more so im not as worried about that as i was with renny but if we can get cole, whoever said that, id do it. but whats his contract status?

  266. Roc, no one knows what Jagr wanted. Sather is the one who said it was too much. Jagr waited in NY the month of June, and Sather never called, then on July 1, Sather lowballed him. That’s typical disrespect, from a GM who is famous for disrespecting players. Ask Graves or Leetch or Bure or Kasparaitis. Ask Holik and Ortmeyer who had to hire lawyers to get the money Sather owed them. Messier was allowed to decide in September if he was retiring or not! Sather is a con artist — don’t ever believe him.

I hate saying this but I think it is the NY Rangers fan is why this team doesnt win!! These guys play so tight! The devils talent is not better then ours. Other then Praise the rangers top two lines are better.

  270. Hearing Rangers are talking with Don Maloney (Phoenix GM).
Rangers get Derek Morris (rental) for Dawes,Prucha and Kalinin (all gone after season anyway).
Morris($3.9 mil cap hit)is UFA after season.
Prucha($1.6 mil cap hit)and Kalinin($2.1 mil cap hit)both rentals for Phoenix and UFA after season.
Phoenix is also a major seller at this point! Talking to Rangers also about BIG right wing Shane Doan.

  271. This isnt about Kaberle but:

  284. Prucha’s value is high right now. Trade him!! He’s Mike York. He can’t maintain he’s enegry for a whole season.

  285. Matt K

Why wouldnt you think Prucha would play well under Torts? I think he’s perfect for his system.

  286. Linda 's battle level is spot on on

    Greg, you’re alright!

I’d love for Aves to be the spark he was the first time he was here. I’d really love for Drury, Redden, and Gomez to actually play to their strengths and look alive out there. It’s a pain in the keister to have big turnover on the roster every season, and each new season, it’s 3 or 4 new guys trying to fit in. I know a lot of you were probably happy to see Shanny gone only because of his age and the wear and tear, but after Graves, Shanny’s my 2nd all time fave player, and they way HE was disrepected did not sit well with me either. The same with Jagr. To not talk to the guys for a month (in Jagrs case, longer for Shanny)..two future hall of famers? The way they were treated was just mind boggling.

For all the joking around we do in here, and for all the crazy trades that you guys come up with, I’d say EVERYONE here is a diehard, and we all just want the same thing, a team of hard working, leave it all on the ice players who are PROUD (and WANT) to wear our jersey. A bunch of guys that play hard EVERY night, no matter if they’re pissed at the coach or a teammate. And the management who will either draft and cultivate these types of players, or will make the smart trade or two or smart signing or two (without massively overpaying, ie gomez, drury and redden). The media always says the ‘fans in new york’ will not stand for rebuilding…..won’t stand for a few years of subpar records while young guys are learning. Exactly who are the fans they are talking to, because to me, all you guys would gladly sit through a rebuilding that is DONE PROPERLY!!! To me, you guys (and me lol) are the true fans, not those corporate dudes who get the best seats (my apologies if ANY of you are corporate dudes lol)

Here’s hoping something good happens for this team tomorrow, and for the rest of the season! This blog must be madcap hilarity come playoff time!

prucha is one of those players that was mismanaged by a scared coach that would rather win 2-1 and play scared, play for a point style. it happens all the time in the league witrh different circumstances. i think if he could put on like 15 lbs of muscle, and worked on his defense he could be top 6 guy for alot of teams. zherdev was in a similar situation in colmbus. given torts style, both could be major pieces to our offense for years to come. you dont score 30 goals in one season by accident. maybe if he only had like 10-12 goals the next season ok maybe it was a fluke, but he got 22 or 23. yea he played with jagr, but the point is, is that he was able to finish. we need finishers on this team. gomers a passer, zherdevs a passer, dangler, even though hes got a good shot, he doesnt get it off fast enough, callys a heart n soul guy but not a true scorer. perhaps doobs will be 25 30 goal guy, not yet though, and besides naslund who is like a straka 2.0 at this point, we have no true goal scorers. i know prucha if put with the right linemates could be a 30 goal guy again.

  322. Greg L, I respect your opinion and I think that’s a great line you have.

It’s concerning you think Salty and I are worms. Criticizing your team and knowing what they can/should do to be better, I consider, as a general quality of ANY GOOD hockey fan. Being able to objectively evaluate your team (or any other team) and see it for it’s strengths and weaknesses is a testament to Salty’s in-depth understanding of the Rangers, the NHL, the sport in general, specific coaches/players and perhaps his intellect if you’re not able to do the same.

There’s a couple on here who have called it like it is, and if you don’t recognize that we’ve been right all along then i’m not going to be able to drag you to the water, let alone make you drink it. You’re still stuck on Renney-ade.

    From Newday blog:

    http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/hockey/blog/

Rangers looking at Recchi, Barker, Antropov?
10:04 p.m.: Not to steal the thunder from my main man Steve Zipay, but he had an informative blog a few of hours ago with same names the Rangers might be looking at.

Of the players he mentions, Mark Recchi and would seem to make the most sense in terms of Rangers’ stated goal of adding more grit to their team. Recchi isn’t big but has always played hard and battled in front of the net. He makes only $1.5 million, so the Rangers wouldn’t need to clear up much cap space.

Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? That’s because Recchi will probably cost the Rangers at least one or two of their talented young players, or a fairly high draft pick. Recchi has 45 points this year, which would place him THIRD on the Rangers in scoring. So despite his age (41) and his impending free agency, the Lightning aren’t going to just give him away.

What would take to get Recchi from the Lightning? Maybe a third-round pick. Or maybe a package of involving Petr Prucha and a lower draft pick. The moral of the trade deadline story is if you wanna get something, you gotta give something up. The Rangers will have to pony up with something good to get Recchi.

    * * *

Another interesting name that surfaced in Steve’s blog is the Blackhawks’ Cam Barker. Barker is a former No. 3 overall pick in 2004 with some offensive upside. He was demoted at the start of the season in a move that many assumed was related to his large salary cap number ($2.442 million), but he has 30 points in 48 games and couldn’t hurt the Rangers’ power play, which lacks an impact D.

Like the Lightning, though, the Hawks aren’t going to just give away a player who has value to more teams than the Rangers. He’s only 22 years old, and with his pedigree, teams are certain to notice if GM Dave Tallon starts offering him around. One possibility could be the Rangers sending Paul Mara to Chicago to make this deal happen, but despite his improved play this seaosn, Mara alone wouldn’t be nearly enough. Think Mara plus a second-round pick. It would be costly, but I think Glen Sather would consider it.

Realistically, Rangers fans may have to set their sights a little lower — think Chris Neil. Nik Antropov (21 goals, 25 assists) is another intriguing name, but Leafs GM Brian Burke is said to be asking for a first-rounder for him, and there’s no way the Rangers would do that… is there?

  338. *”Salty won a bet because he was un LOYAL”*

I won a bet because I’m smarter than you and recognized the better team for what it is, rather than have blind faith for a team like you Greg.

Despite my disgust with the team at that point of the season, the *point* of the bet was to sucker you into not posting for a while simply to give myself and others a break from your Asperger’s Syndrome style posting for a couple of days.

“Salty never came up with the “sloppy second time here for Avery , I did!!!…look it up!!!! Youll see i was first!!”

I can *assure* you I would never resort to using such a HACK line like that. Plain and simple. I’ve never said that here or anywhere else, never thought I “invented it” or anything of the sort, I know that that is the first thing that goes through ANYONES mind… it’s just so HACK, it’s like a Dave Coulier joke. You can think you “came up with it” all you want and the reality is that everyone has already thought about it and then in their minds though “Nah, it’s too easy and not very clever” and kept their mouths shut. Everyone thought about that weeks and weeks and weeks ago when the possibility of him coming back ever opened up.

    Asperger’s Syndrome, I’m convinced.

If the Rangers go for Barker, they need to trade a D-man like a Kalinin or Mara.

I’m not excited at all for tomorrow; more nervous. I want it to be over with already. There are guys in this organization I root for and if they want me to keep spending $ and going to games, I want to see my guys or I’m not a satisfied customer and I think everyone knows who those guys are.

I want Sather to do absolutely nothing tomorrow. If he has to do something, a small deal, that’s it. Remember Rangers fans; PATIENCE. We’re Rangers fans; we’ve been screwed over many times and are very reactionary and critical and we have a right to be after all the idiots who have run this show. I’d rather lose the battle and not make the playoffs and win the war and be real contenders. No more of other people’s junk or damaged goods; and that includes Gaborik and St. Louis (I like him but he’s on the wrong side of 30 and doesn’t offer size; we can have Gionta in the off season for nothing but $ if you really want a small fast guy).

  342. I could see Martin St. Louis being dealt to the Rangers tomorrow…..I think I wouldnt mind seeing Marcus Naslund get traded if that was the case. Torts & MSL are like pees and carrots.

I would love to see Cam Barker come here….especially for Betts & Dawes….Rangers would need to clear up cap space somehow, not sure its feasible.

As far as Shane Doan, I think him & Sean Avery do not get along…..If I recall, Avery called Doan the biggest pussy in hockey in a mag article.

In regard to Avery & Torts….I think Avery will play his heart out, and if even possible, even more than he did under Renney….Avery is gonna wanna show Torts that he is a hockey player in a weird “father / son type way”….

Players I dont wanna see : Tkachuk, Guerin, Gary Roberts, Recchi…..basically no old fuggerz.

I would like to see Dawes moved, no matter what, even for a draft pick. I just dont dig him so much. I wouldnt mind Betts moving either. I think either AA or another player will fill in as a center on 3rd line and a Korpedo would drop down to 4th line.

  343. Agreed with your last paragraph LIQUID.

Btw, anyone notice that Cullen has 30 goals this year- glad we got rid of him…

  344. Liquid-Why St. Louis? The guy’s on the wrong side of 30 and his best years are passed him. He’s still good but he’s not elite anymore. He’s like a little better version of Naslund at this point. Did you read Blueshirt Bulletin’s trade proposal for him? There is NO way I support that crap.

This team doesn’t need anymore small guys passed 30. They can have Gionta who is very close friends with Cally (Rochester connection) and also Gomez for $ this off season and still hold onto picks.

Barker I’d be fine with but not if it’s gonna cost too much.

I’m effin sick and tired of taking on other peoples declining players and damaged goods just to sell a few more jerseys. This team has a much better prospect program with a very good system despite what people say. Let it be. I don’t want Heatley or Spezza. I want to root for the two young Russians and two Italian Dmen. I don’t care if Bobby Sags is Tom Poti 2.0 I wanna see what he got.

    Say no to Gaborik/Guerin/Morris/Tkachuk/St. Louis/etc.

  345. cullen has 19 or 20, but would still be welcomed this year – esp if it allowed us NOT to sign Wadden

  346. Mike A – I dont know what it is about Marty St Loius…but every time I see him play, he reminds me of one of them rink rats you knew growing up playing open hockey who has a nose for the net. You throw MSL on the top line with Gomez, and now you have a somewhat legit #1 top line. Not sure who would play the other wing…..Marty will be 34 in June…..and I think he is the same age as Marcus Naslund…

Inevitably, I am sure what transpires tomorrow in Ranger land will be alot less drastic then what we have all been throwing around here…..

As far as blueshirt bulletin, I think its a paid site now….I dont even go to it, I never really did….what are they saying about MSL

  347. Nasty 1: great post at 1:50 pm

I remember that game, and it pissed me off seeing Ruutu do whatever he felt like, coming out of the games like a superstar. Avery would likely have ground his face into the ice.

The only thing I worry about is the ref’s treatment and extra attention. Kind of like trying to get a fair trial in a town where everybody knows what you’ve done and doesn’t want to forget.

So many angles to the Sean Avery re-acquisition. I’m not totally sure, but you brought up a very good example of an upside. If he plays like he can and doesn’t get flaky, he will really help. Not that we don’t need more.

  348. Cullen was solid towards the end of the year when he was here….He was given alot of money to play 3rd line center, but was used alot as a 2nd line center….I did like him and his hustle….

I look @ the Hurricanes roster and cannot believe they are hanging in there and winning games. I figured they would have folded by now….Am I missing something with them>? Is Cam Ward stepping it up?

  349. Liquid-Fair enough. But his age is the problem. I love the guy. I’m only 5’8” so I always root for the undersized guys and what he did in 04 and how he overcame getting waived by Calgary and being labeled too small that stuff is great. However no more older guys until this team is ready to contend and they are not.

This was from Blueshirt Bulletin granted it’s only some writer’s opinion but I almost thew up by this proposal.

    # Martin St. Louis: John Tortorella and St. Louis were very close in Tampa Bay. Combine that with the fact that St. Louis spends his summers in Westchester and grew up in Connecticut, and it’s possible that the star sees himself in NY tomorrow. His salary also decreases after this season averaging a $4 million cap hit for the final two seasons.

    * To acquire him: A second round draft pick, Petr Prucha, Dmitri Kalinin, and Artem Anisimov. Tampa Bay will be looking to shed salary, not take it on. If this trade were to occur, the Rangers would have to shed some salary (likely in demoting Lauri Korpikoski) and an expiring contract such as Kalinin. This deal may be light as well, but allows the Lightning to shed the salary while acquiring some good young talent to complement Stamkos.

    NO!

  350. By the way everyone, San Jose is really banged up now. I love Betts and all he’s done an he’ll forever by one of those quiet guys I appreciate, but if they can get a high pick for him or work out a trade and get Vlasic for Betts, one more player on the NHL roster, and a pick, I’d be down. This is from Bob McKenzie from TSN:

12:45pm et) – The San Jose Sharks are being bitten by the injury bug – again.

Forward Mike Grier is out for four-to-six weeks after getting his knee scoped and veteran Jeremy Roenick is also expected to be out for four-to-six weeks with a shoulder injury.

Both, however, are expected to return to the Sharks lineup prior to the playoffs.

They join forwards Marcel Goc and Torrey Mitchell on the injured list.

Goc has a lower-body injury and will be out another few weeks. The Sharks also hope Mitchell will be fully recovered from a broken leg in time for the playoffs.

While the Sharks are reasonably confident all those players will return in time for the playoffs, San Jose is looking at some depth-oriented trade options at the deadline. Ottawa’s Chris Neil and Colorado’s Ian Laperriere veterans with an edge – are two of the types of players the Sharks may be interested in

  351. RE: Cullen

Has a so so year in NY and cant wait to get the hell out..

Goes Back to Carolina- goes back to being a solid 15-20goal scorer

HMMMM Another player that couldnt Stand Tom Redden?

  352. True Fans-it had to be the site and the way the stuff was encoded. I just copied and pasted it from Blueshirt Bulletin. When I just did the McKenzie article, it didn’t work.

  353. That is too much for St. Louis- MikeA is 100% correct that Gionta in the offseason is a better option and, more importantly, the distinction between battle (making the playoffs this year) and war (becoming a cup contender) is the thing of real importance.

We’ve made way too many bad, bad trades. In fact, I think I have blacked out much of the earlier part of this decade (insofar as it concerns the Rangers) because of many “win the cup now” schemes which pinned our hopes on someone way past prime or not working within some system.

We better be strategic sellers and cautious buyers- anything else would irresponsible- and I hate spoiling endings, but this year doesn’t end with a cup in New York City (I hate, hate to say it- but I think we all know this).

  354. Chris, is Tom Redden the relative of the current D-man for the Rangers or are you thinking of the Rangers recently departed coach? (or making a pun)….

  355. True Fans….I think if you put an asterik before the text, it automatically does the quote box…Let me try….lol

*True Fans Bleed RW&B March 4th, 2009 at 12:26 am

    MikeA
How do you put someone else’s quotes into that box?

  356. Cullen was solid towards the end of the year when he was here….He was given alot of money to play 3rd line center, but was used alot as a 2nd line center….I did like him and his hustle….

    …..

I pretty sure it was more that he was paid the $3M to be THE 2nd line center, it was supposed to be a “big promotion” from his 3rd line days in CAR.

He really struggled through the whole year and it wasn’t long before he was the regular 3rd line center with the kids. I was very hard on him to be honest, and I thought “$3M was WAY too much to be paying the 3rd line center”…(YES I WOULD TAKE HIM BACK IN A SECOND IN PLACE OF DRURY FOR THAT MENIAL $3M NOW!!!)

Cullen struck me as a guy who thought he was going to come in and be a big shot after winning the Cup in CAR. When that reality faded I thought he became a VERY selfish player, especially when he was playing with the young kids… As if to say: “Hell no I’m not passing you the puck once we’re in the zone, I’m the struggling veteran and I need to score some goals dammit”.

The problem is he missed the net 60% of the time.

What I would give to have him back though. The guy was almost IDENTICAL to Drury at less than HALF the price!

  357. # Chris March 4th, 2009 at 12:30 am

    RE: Cullen

Has a so so year in NY and cant wait to get the hell out..

Goes Back to Carolina- goes back to being a solid 15-20goal scorer

HMMMM Another player that couldnt Stand Tom Redden?

*Cullen played the point on the PP for CAR’s Cup winning team.

Renney only used him in that position about 3 times If I remember correctly.

  358. …and while on the topic, a player doesn’t stop scoring because he doesn’t like his coach….

Jagr, giving the strength of his ego, probably didn’t truly like any coach- and under Renney had some amazing seasons.

My point, and why do I mention Cullen? As much as we say some guys aren’t “made for Broadway” – these guys are all driven to perform (contract are awarded on expectations of future performance) and as Marcus Naslund has pretty much conceded- while NYC is a big media market, hockey is less scrutinized here than in Canadian markets- I believe it’s not the coach, it’s not the city; it’s the GM, scouts and others who have a real say on how a team is constructed (ok, a coach has some culpability to the extent he has a say on personnel). And that’s where the problem has been….so, please, please no stupid moves tomorrow- no aging veterans (and if we were to get one aging veteran this year it should have been Shanahan)…no trading young guys for someone who is a rental…nothing that isn’t additive to this team’s performance for only the period between now and June….

  359. TrueBlue-If the Rangers stay pat with what they have now, make the playoffs and get blown out and swept like they did in 2006; I’ll take it and call this year a success.

I want to see them win another Cup soon and irresponsible trading over the next couple of hours will only hurt that.

They want a sniper? Get Satan as a rental.

They want D help? Leopold or Cam Barker or see if SJ will give up Vlasic or Douglas Murray for the Betts package I propose.

Does anyone here remember in 91 when the Caps beat the Rangers in the playoffs? That sucked and it stung like anything (even as a 10-year-old and I’ll admit it, I cried after that series so feel free to start the bashing) but look what it lead to in 91-92 (and I don’t mean Messier I mean the youth on the team) and further on.

And yeah, that St. Louis trade proposal made me almost throw my flat screen monitor out the window at work. GARBAGE!

  360. Salty…I agree with you on Cullen…

Meanwhile, you mention he missed the net 60% of the time. For some crazy reason, I feel like when I watch the Rangers this year, they miss the net about 90% of the time!!!

Especially guys like Drury, Staal, Rozy, Mara, etc

  361. Miro Satan on waivers and is UFA after this year…thoughts?

I know my metal head friends in Jersey (Rangers fans, don’t worry) would love it.

  362. Also regarding Cullen, if you watch his short-handed goal tonight is that he skates and keeps his legs moving…driving players to react to him….I know it’s something JD used to mention time and time again about guys, watch for the guys who keep moving their feet (and he’d credit Kovalev when he did, and call him out when he didn’t).

I think the need to add “size” is a misnomer- especially in this era of the league. Size is really only part of it (look at Parise for a good example) you need someone who is quick, but more importantly opens up space…and I guess going by that logic, Avery (sans baggage) is a good pickup- but also, underscores how badly we miss a guy like Straka…(whose name is seldom mentioned as a reason for our decline in goals this year).

  363. LIQUID- how can you say Rozy misses the net that much?

There is no way a majority of his shots even make it to the net…

Mara shoots wide a lot, but some of the times it’s for the bank off of the boards (some of the time- not all).

  364. MikeA agreed on being “satisfied” with this year if we get bounced early and, humorously enough, I remember that series- and we are the same age.

I guess the point is, you are a playoff team for a few years- build on that and get the pieces into place and build. So I think we are the same page when I say, any moves tomorrow should so promise for being good over a longer time period than a few months now or even just one more season…

  365. Mike A- Looks like I got about 10 years on ya…hehe The only times I shed the tears for this team was when Ken Morrow scored in OT in 1984…Especially living on Long Island with a bunch of spoiled Icehole fans that just taunted the living sh!t out of us……Back then, the games were on Channel 3, Sportscenter. Only if Mikko Lenonein hit that open net right before the crushing game losing goal!!

Then ofcourse, in 1994, at MSG on June 14th to witness the only cup since my own dad was born (1940)….

In regard to the day of the trade deadline, in the late 80s I was in high school and would use the pay phone to call sports phone 976-1313, and listen to bob pappas with the updates every time there was a break in between classes. Cost 25 cents per call…lol ….Now 20 years later, this sh!t never gets old….should be interesting tomorrow

    Oh Nice! Did this work?

  367. no, text box, just thought the asterisk was appropriate…

sh*t it’s late- night all, I hope I don’t wake up to hear about some horrible trade…

  368. Just read all the comments not sure why, took way too Long i should be sleeping, but some hilarious remarks from Matt K.

Love the eye-head or whatever nickname for Gaborik and a lot of other stuff you said

    haha

Please can we hold onto and resign Dubinsky and Callahan, oh and don’t get rid of DZ, Anisimov or Grachev either cos they look promising

  369. Dominic Moore is getting carried away with his thoughts of what he is worth. Good player, yes. Once he walks to away from the Leafs to another team, he will spend two years just getting back to what he did this year, if he does it all.

Hey Dominic Moore’s agent: Hope this works for you and you get your dough, cause D. Moore is not worth over $2 mil, if that in the coming NHL economy.

  370. Actually, I wouldn’t pay Dominic Moore $2 mil. Would anyone else here?
    Nothing personal Dominic, but…good luck.

  371. Dominic Moore- think he was even asking 2.5-3mil. You’re having a great year, but c’mon prove it for a little longer.

  372. ZzZz 13 ZzZz Rules !! says Greg L. on

Unloyalty sure is a common thing around here with certain posters … Im not saying if you talk bad about the coach or players that you are unloyal , but when you bet AGAINST your team to benifit yourself , Id call you an unloyal fair weather fan. Over 10 people agreed that day ,,against that unloyal persons measly 4 …the guys pathetic!

  373. * Dominic Moore- think he was even asking 2.5-3mil. You’re having a great year, but c’mon prove it for a little longer.

  374. Petr Prucha to Pit This could be a great fit in Pitt. A cap clearing move in NY

lol i guess this is rated e5

  375. ROC

The Devils are so good because they have the three building blocks of a great team:

Very good scouts, an astute and intelligent GM that knows how to evaluate talent, and a fine coach who knows hockey and how to run a team.

    That’s all

  376. If he goes to Pitt, i reckon Sindy or Malkin will turn Petr Puck into a goal-scoring machine..

There seems to be a lot of movement of minor pieces, but no major trades in the works.

As for Moore – having a good year, but he’s a 3rd liner with possible 2nd line upside, if he can get $2.5m+ good luck to the guy (i wouldn’t if i was an NHL GM)

  377. The Devils are also consistently excellent because thay have a philosophy. And they stick to it. . . . unlike the team across the Hudson.

  378. I will be watching the trade moves today. But as far as the NYR are concerned, I could see a waiver claim for a player. I don’t see any trade scenarios that make any sense. I thought Rozi might be in play, but what would we replace him with?

    I am not expecting much.

  379. cwgatti – i saw Zipper saying we could be after Recchi (would cost $300k for rest of season), but can’t see that happening without moving or demoting Dawes, Prucha or possibly Cally.

  380. With Avery back, Dawes is even more expendable than ever. I thought Prucha should be dealt, but I think Dawes is gonna go. . . or be sent to Hartford. . . or waived.

  381. This is always a fun day for me.I took today off like always do to sit back and watch the show.
I really don’t think we’re gonna be doing much, unless we can shed 1 or 2 (haha) of our big $$$$$ contracts.
But a few smaller deals might be interesting.
We just have no cap space to do much.

If we do anything major at all we might have to move someone WE don’t want to.

All in all I don’t expect much from Sather today.

  382. Mark (the orginal) on

Good morning everyone, I am sure we are in for a long day. I wonder what time Sather shows up to the office, probably rolls out of bed at noon.

  383. since Smurf Dawes lacks the jam…he’s definitely the odd-man out with Aves returning.

Just praying that Slats doesn’t give up the future for a measly play-off run.

  384. Mark (the orginal) on

Try going to tsn.ca and then a intro page of options will come up, click on tradecenter09 watch live, and it should take you there.

  385. Trading Dawes would be sad but typical of the rangers, who are poor at developing talent. He can develope into a good sniper but I think they give up on players or they just expect to much from them because their $$$ “stars” are not shinning.

The King is not the best goaltender in the league and he might not even be in the top five this year. He is getting beat high this year quite often. He has not made an adjustment to it that I can see.

  386. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

In regard to the day of the trade deadline, in the late 80s I was in high school and would use the pay phone to call sports phone 976-1313, and listen to bob pappas with the updates every time there was a break in between classes. liquid- lol holy crap i remember that!! funny

  387. First trade of the day folks!…..

I just traded my wife of 10 years for a young hot nympho mute!!!!

Sex all the time and she will never talk back !

  388. Is anyone else sick and tired of hiring about the Butch Goring trade!! XM 204 are beating it to death right now.

  389. Pesonally, I would prefer both Prucha or Avery in the lineup over Nigel Dawes on any given night.

There are 100 players like Nigel Dawes in the league… undersized, 15 goal scorers with decent hockey IQ’s that lack the speed to be a Martin St. Louis or the hands and size to be a physical scoring force.

To me, he’s an average third line player that we can definitely do without.

There comes a point where “potential” is meaningless if you have 10 guys on a team with “potential”. Someone has to go.

I think Nigel would benefit from a change of scenery.

  390. brandon …

I totally agree. When you have guys in Hartford like AA, Parenteau, or Grachev — Dawes doesnt stand a chance to make the roster next season anyway.

  391. Thanks Mark(the original) I got it on habsvison. For some reason tsn didn’t work.

and after listening to these guys Recchi might be a good pick-up.

  392. How is this teams talent pool so bad!! Every scout should be fired except the Rangers european scout. This team can’t draft. Spend some money on scouting talent. Det,Devils,Philly, etc. They finish in the bottom of the draft every year and they just keep turning out stud prospects. I make me sick.

  393. I hope they won’t trade Pruchs. He’s awesome fighter and can only develop under Torts system.

  394. I can so see Torts in the room with Dolan and Sather.

Fine, sign Avery, but Reitz and Voros have to get waived.

  395. Why is everyone so high on Parenteau? He’s a 26-year-old career AHLer. Two organizations have given up on him (Chicago and Anaheim). The Rangers have had him for two years (both years he’s lead the Pack in scoring) and haven’t given him a shot.

Can someone tell me what is so special about him? I don’t see him ever playing for the Rangers, except maybe as an emergency call-up.

  396. I have a feeling the Rangers will sign Recchi at 2:59 pm when they have exhausted all other options.

  397. ok kids, i just woke up. what day is it? why is everyone calling my cell so early? is something going on today? people are talking aboot some kind of trade deadline? no clue. Anyway, im going to take a leak, check my facebook account, maybe some ladies left few messages on my wall! Jimmy D and I are planning to visit Statue of Liberty today, cant wait, its going to be so much fun! Catch ya later loyal and un-loyal fans.

  398. I want nothing to do with the Recchi’s and Guerin’s of the world.

While I do like MSL, the last thing we need is to overpay for another diminutive forward. The league is cyclical, and while small and fast may be the trend today, there will always be a place for big and strong.

I’d give up just about anyone for a guy like Antropov, who’s an absolute monster who will only continue to grow and progress. However, I don’t really think he’s in our wheelhouse.

  399. First trade last year was reported by TSN at 10:34am (Salvador for Janssen). So, be patient, it’s always quiet in the morning.

  400. Quick, who would you rather have… Mark Recchi or Brendan Shannahan, contracts and the likes included?

    Personally, I’m taking Shanny.

Recchi is just more Band-Aid save face nonsense from Slats.

  401. The problem with Antropov is that he’s a UFA and will probably seek big bucks (possibly $5mill) in the offseason. Barring some unlikely major trade (ie. Gomez, Redden, Drury), the Rangers don’t have enough cap room to keep him beyond this year. Acquiring Antropov would likely be for a rental so I wouldn’t give up too much to get him.

  402. In case you guys forgot Recchi’s commentating in the playoffs last year, the guy absolutely despises Avery

    Just another thing to consider.

  403. no recchi. he’ll have the type of ranger career that, 5 years from now, nobody will remember. He’ll be the answer to a tough trivia question. same with guerin.

  404. This morning is going to be boring until all those players either clear waivers or get picked up at noon. I doubt any GM can pull the trigger until after that.

  405. Question to everyone:

How many upgrades do we need to:

    a) make the playoffs
    b) win a series
    c) get to the conference finals
    d) win the Cup (insert joke here)

Given the cap room (Voros and Reitz gone, now we have billions to spend right?) and the SATHER contracts (SATHER = STUPID) we have with the big dogs, now be realistic and try and consider what is really possible.

I mean, there is a reason why we are like 5 hrs from the deadline and there have been less than maybe 10 moves thus far.

  406. I HIGHLY DOUBT Sather would trade Prucha to an Atlantic Division team or even an EC team. I would love to see him on Washington though :)

  407. Newman I think we make the playoffs as is… but its tight

beyond that we need our guys to start finding the net… to get any further…

  408. if the SJO fits on

the only players im willing to part with are dawes & kalinin…bring up a young D man from hartford if thats the case.

NO WAY would i want to trade prucha, or even roszival. rozy’s made his mistakes, but when he’s on, especially with this new system, he could be big for us.

we should expect one foward to be going somewhere today though with avery coming in and all.

  409. bull dog line on

thats good news for the rangers. chicago wanted vermette or betts. maybe the price goes up for betts.

  410. PruBelongsOnTheIce on

I think all they’ll do is unload Dawes and maybe Kalinin/Prospect/Pick for a D-man.

  411. Agravaine…from your mouth to Lester Patrick’s ears! I hope you are right. BTW, you got caught in the crossfire yesterday re: the rumor generator. I was not aiming it at you specifically at all. Your montages, video stuff, photos, and contributions here are great. Seriously. I was more frustrated with the lack of action and then everyone here spewing BS to kill time (which in turn wasted my procrastination time) and I happened to read your 1 or 2 trade rumor contributions most recently. It was a general statement, not aimed at you specifically at all.

  412. ZzZz 13 ZzZz Rules !! says Greg L. on

Alright boys time to start your trading….WE NEED JAY BO!!!!!

  413. Wish list:

    1) Trade Dawes
    2) Trade Kalinin
    3) Trade Betts

I think that Shoeney will have alot of say on any decision to trade Kalinin and Betts because he would be the person who knows best about the progress of players like AA, Corey Potter and Bobby Sangs.

  414. New Newman,

    A. dont need changes
    B. legit scoring threat
    C. legit scoring threat and another decent scorer
as well as betts and orr not playing. rolling 4 lines with constant pressure. like herb brooks did against ussr. shove it down the oppositions throats.
    d. C + hank standing on his head while cooking a 4 course meal.

  415. How about killing 3 birds with 1 stone –

Betts, Kalinin and Dawes for Cam Barker and a 2nd rounder

  416. Kuba re-signed and Kaberle injured – JayBo’s price just went through the roof!!

Is Tim Connolly any good? Dreger on TSN.ca says he’s left the building – of course he could have just popped over the road for a sandwich or to use the ATM but……..

  417. All you armchair GM’s should check out the PC game NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2007. Best hockey manager game I have ever played. I am not the designer, developer, salesman, etc…. just a Ranger fan that gets to take out his frustrations by trading Redden away on my own ;) Oh I also just fired Renney but Torts still had a job so I hired Pat Burns.

Seriously, great game. Free agent signings, drafting, scouting, etc… Get your GM fix ;)

  418. yea but you saved a gallon of water, thats about .0005 cents, so what if it cost you 10$ extra in electricity youre doing the right think by being GREEN
