Counting down to Rangers-Isles (updated)

382

Hi All, it’s Joe Erwin guest-blogging for Carp.

Who would have thought a month ago this would be a huge game for the Rangers. It seems like they’ve hit “bottom” a few times recently — the 10-2 loss in Dallas, the 5-2 loss to the Flyers on Sunday, but a loss to the awful Islanders at home might make a new low.

Tom Reney is staying optimistic.

“We are in this together, the coaching staff and the players, and I know that group in our locker room cares an awful lot about what it means to be a New York Ranger,” Renney said at the morning skate today. “I believe that if we trust the system and do the right things, we have the people and the leadership in order to succeed.”

Find out more of what Renney and the Rangers are saying.

The Islanders enter tonight’s game coming off a win over the Penguins. Here is the view from the Island.

EVENING UPDATE:

Hey, it’s Carp again.

I was listening to the first period on the radio and Dave Maloney noted that his brother, Don, the Phoenix GM and two of the Coyotes’ scouts are in the house. You know that Sather only likes to deal with his buddies and people he knows. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

  1. “I know that group in our locker room cares an awful lot about what it means to be a New York Ranger”… ABSOLUTE 100% HORSESQUEEZE.

If they cared, they’d play the same way they did in the 10-2-1 start. The team has given up on the coach, it’s so blatant!

  2. It’s the simply fact that it’s a careless error, if you say Zherdev spelled Zhardev you’d be like “wtf?”

just because you’re not happy with the system doesnt mean that the guy isnt a retard for misspelling the main topic- the coach’s- name.

  3. jj:

“My first couple of years with the Capitals, they definitely tried to steer me away from playing offensively or making any types of plays,” Green said this week. “As an offensive-minded guy, it really limited what I could do and therefore,I wasn’t very effective.

“So now, with the free reins I have with Bruce, you can really use your skills.”

    HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

    Staal?

  4. I really hope he does get fired though and we have a free-wheeling offense like all of these guys need. These 2-1 games suck.

  5. Hi all. I am a guess poster, today i will fill in for Beer Me! Bob (yes that is his real name) couldn’t come because he is ashamed of himself and he is definitely doesn’t like to be WRONG! So, I offered to fill in for him and take all the abuse that he deserves! So fire away boys!

  6. Doodie Machetto on

Staal wishes he had a shot or a release anywhere approaching Mike Green.

He can skate and carry the puck very well, his first pass is adequate, but his shot is definitely not that of an offensive player.

Scott you need to calm down its a blog bro take a chill. Have you never spelled a word wrong?

What pisses me off is people who knit-pick.

  8. THE SYSTEM = NO EMOTION; MAJOR ANXIETY; ZERO ACTIVATION OF DEFENSEMEN IN OFFENSIVE ATTACK; MULTIPLE SCORING CHANCES AGAINST DESPITE PLAYING A “DEFENSIVE” SCHEME; MUCH GUM CHEWING

  9. Son, this blog was run like a machine when Sam was here. This place is full of random throw-ins and random nobodies. This guy Carp doesnt have time to go to the practices so he wont be up on his ? Why does this blog exist? So people can talk about the rangers- just in general.

You know what I hate? When Ranger fans start fighting with Ranger fans over a guest blogger- who probably isn’t even a friggin Ranger fan. Take a seat Chief.

I’ve seen Staal take a lot of shots recently actually. Most go wide, and the ones that don’t are soft and right to the goaltender.

He’s got 67 shots on the season and his shooting % is 3%. The only guys on the team with a lower shooting % are Kalinin with 2.1 Redden with a 1.8 (I find out worse things about him everyday).

He really needs to work on it during the offseason. I said the same thing last season too and was disappointed to see that he hadn’t.

  12. little green men on

Good news about Mara. I hope the Islanders stay. I love to hate them. Maybe Obama can give them some of the bailout money…..lord knows we aint gonna see any of it.

  13. my god please don’t mention Mike game over Green it’s making me sick. imagine having HIM and someone else for the SAME PRICE AS REDDEN! IMAGINE!!!!!

  14. Renney said at the morning skate today. “I believe that if we trust the system and do the right things, we have the people and the leadership in order to succeed.”

What does that mean Tom? A 2-1 OT SO win tonight?

Or maybe a 1 – 0 win and you can say how well the team played. It still doesn’t fix the Scoring problem.

  15. I may have just started coming here? I just started posting on the comments, and im starting to regret it now that im talking to you. Ive never seen Sam misspell the main topic’s name, sorry Chief.

I’ve seen a lot of bad things, but on a blog that someone was actually connected with the rangers is crapped on (carped on, same thing) and has someone with no real availability.

  16. jock-itch lemaire on

“We are in this together, the coaching staff and the players, and I know that group in our locker room cares”

no you ain’t. the players quit on you long ago, and they could care less if you get the pink slip, as long as their checks keep coming.

  17. WD40 – Love the gum chewing remark. I can’t stand that about Renney. It drives me up a wall.

Is there anyone else out there hoping for a loss tonight just to see what happens. LOL

You know you have been a Ranger fan for too long when you start hoping they lose games to see the reaction. That is when you know the season has hit bottom.

  18. Ok, in addition to score- how many punches do you think it will take for Voros to go down tonight?

  19. Doodie Machetto on

He’ll take the punches until the other guy tires himself out and dies.

It seems that’s the only way Voros will win a fight.

  20. Scott Kay-

We discuss the Rangers here, we don’t obsess over spelling. Hopefully you have more to say than to be critical of someones spelling, if not, bye-bye.

  21. The D’s not scoring goals, to go with their low shooting percentage is critical, in that this would be one small way to pick up the lack of a PP. So no real D scoring, no PP, not much even-strength offense, safe to say this team has merely a PK and a goalie who is regressing from the lack of offensive and defensive support in front of him, as its strong suits. And yet, Tom Renney’s job is safe.

Pit and Ottawa canned their coach, but we have a keeper, apparently. Or else Pit and Ottawa CARE about winning more than we do. Name, if you can, one organization in the league that stands pat during this combination drought/depression the Rangers are experiencing? Imagine Montreal going through this and not making changes. Imagine a Steinbrenner team letting something like this get out of hand to this degree? It is unfathomable that this team can be allowed to get worse with each passing week, with no redress coming from the top, whatsoever. And picking up another G.D. Backman-type at the last minute is NOT redress, Slats. You already picked up Rozy, Redden, Kalinin, Reitz, and Mara when he was a total bust, understanding it took him 1 1/2 seasons here to raise the level of his game. More players should strive to do that, except under Renney, few of them do.

  22. The Chief
A legendary fan of the Rangers during the 1970s and 1980’s who donned an Indian headress complete with Ranger facepaint. At one game an Islander fan stole the headress and was chased by almost an entire section of Ranger fans. They returned moments later with the headress and the Islander jersey the fan was wearing.

    LETS GO RANGERS!!!

  23. Seriously lets kill the messenger because he mis-spelled Renny or Renney or Reney…who gives?

  24. Chief, that story made me shed a tear. Scott just got steamrolled by the entire blog. I guess we wont be seen him again.

P.S. I am not real Beer Me! but I feel dirty…

  25. Man, I remember the chief. My dad took me to my first game at the age of 5. It was rangers-islanders actually…

I remember the chief making his rounds at all the games I went to as a child, stoping in front of each section and rasing his arms up in the air.

I’m 26 now and I’ve always wondered what happened to that guy.

  26. Cheif/Chief Scott on

I am a spell checker…I won the spelling bee
    its Reney…R-E-N-E-Y
    no wait Renny…R-E-N-N-Y
    damnit…I mean Renney…R-E-N-N-E-Y

  27. R.i.P. The Chief, he was a funny guy. People used to give him crap all the time but he cared. He called into WFAN a lot in the early 90s.

  28. Scott can hang with Jack from the last thread and the other “bone-heads” over at nyrangersblog.

  33. Yikes, “starting call him Schoe-hawk.” Nice grammar there. Meant to say “started calling him….”

  36. staal wart… u miss spelled the name of the PRESIDENT!!! How dare YOU! Where is this country coming too!! Unacceptable!!

No but seriously… is this the day? they’ll probably win tonight and Renney (double N) will say something like ” quite honestly, at the end of the day we went to square one… then we took the square root of 1 and multiplied it by a platitude and basically won the game in a shootout”

  37. Sather: “tom I’m afraid we’re going to have to let you go”

Renney: “You know I never really worked here anyway”

Sather: “thats what makes so difficult”

  38. Mark

Is that a good thing??? if they lose you know that post-game “schpeal’ is gonna be the same scripted BS as always. Maybe this time “We gave the Islanders something to think about”

    LMFAO…. that line kills me.

    CCCP

Change? No Change. Can we throw lose change at Renney?
… Staal Wart has it right :P

  39. TONIGHT PRIOR TO THE GAME, THE RANGERS ARE AFRAID OF THE ISLANDERS:

Orr: Hey! Whats all this sitting around crap?

Voros: What the heck we supposed to do you moron

Orr: ITS NOT OVER! Its over…when we say its over…Did Archie manning say it was over against the Patriots?

    Drury: Archie Manning?

Gomez: let him go..he’s on a roll

Orr: Its over when WE SAY ITS OVER!! Now who’s with me?

(Orr runs out to fight the Islanders..everyone else sits there)

Orr: whatever happened to the Rangers I used to know; “Oh we’re too scared Orr, the Islanders will beat us.”.well you can all kiss my a**!!) Comrie? he’s a dead man, Guerin Dead man..Okposoooooooooo

Dubinsly: I like him he’s good

    and everyone agrees

  40. Mark (the orginal) on

If the Rangers lose tonight on the postgame I want to hear John Giaone down by the locker room saying Tom Renney has not been made available to the media, and is talking to Glenn Sather, but if they lose, and were to fire him do you think they do it tonight or tomorrow?

  41. DanTheRangerFan on

If we dont beat Gordons finest fishies tonight we got some hugggggeeee problems to deal with in the morning….on second thought if we do beat them we still got huggggeee problems …so damn where do we go from here…..

    1)Toss Renney
2)Trade Gomez ( teams are still interested in him)
    3) Package redden with the likes of a dawes or prucha to get him the hell out.
    4)sign kovalchuk
    5)Wave voros
    6)Bring up Potter and avery
    7) If possible find another D-man and trash Kalinin
    8) and hell while were at it take sather and drop him off in the middle of the alantic ocean

  42. dan- if we dont win tonight which im predicting we wont, and renny is still the coach tomorrow morning 2-8 in your list dont apply..

even if renny isnt the problem(i think he is personally) you have to give this team a chance to prove they can play under another coach to see if they totally suck or dont

  43. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

yea mark that sucks. i wanted to hear the all knowing joe michelobetti, ohh crap scott can u double check that spelling for me?

  44. Drury will play the point on the PP… he used to play point in Colorado with Ray Bourque as his partner… well, we have a Ray Bourque …too bad his name is spelled Wade Redden

  45. Rosi was last off the ice after practice… before he went into the locker he took dozen shots on net… wonder what Redden did? took dozen coke lines off the net?

  46. Sundin's Ghost on

Dawes is a better player than Prucha, but because he doesn’t look like a cute little Keebler Elf, he doesn’t have the same creepy obsessive fan club.

  47. Hitting? Check.

Going to the net? Not so sold on that yet.

Defense? Not so sold on that yet.

    I guess 1/3 ain’t bad so far.

  48. bs. his first goal in 12 games, and 3 of his 9 are vs the worst team in the league.

I hope it just increases his trade value.

  49. Redden looks lost out there. WTF is wrong with him!?!?!?!?

    ——————————————

He knows the fans hate him, but that’s not the problem. The problem is the rest of the team VISIBLY seems reluctant to even pass him the puck.

  50. “Virus couldnt reach it!” what else is new?! I’m hoping Witt and Virus fight tonight so I can change his nickname!

Dan, did you ever think you’d be saying ANYONE makes Malik look good?

  51. Mark (the orginal) on

Why does Micheleti have to say the Islanders picked up their game in the 2nd half of the period, they controlled the period after about what 13 minutes left in the period.

  52. Doodie Machetto on

Guys, Redden is bad but he is still WORLDS better than Malik.

Redden isn’t even the worst defenseman on the team, Kalinin is.

Redden’s contract and icetime are the worst. At least Malik never played the PP.

    ***********************************************

Yeah but that last play, Cally jumps off the bench and beats him to the playing coming down on LQ to make the defensive play. That just shouldnt happen!

Not that you said it Pavel – yeah I totally see it now.

  54. PruBelongsOnTheIce on

Does it ever seem like after Voros takes these beatings he looks like he’s happy about it? I wish he was off the power play, let alone the ice.

  55. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

guys redden obviously is just at the bottom with his confidence. he needs a goal so bad. i wish the fans would stop booing him relentlessly it just makes it worse for him. if he gets a goal it’ll help him tremendously.

  56. MAKO, exactly. It’s like 5 vs. 4.5 when he’s on the ice. He can be good if he wants to, but I think he’s more concerned with the paycheck.. who cares, it’s guaranteed the next few years :(

  57. Doodie

As much as I always agree with you on most points. Kalinin has tightened up his game much more than Redden has. I mean Redden looks COMPLETELY lost out there. He was wandering around in the corner at LQ’s right side. WHY??? WTF for? There was nobody there!! But he was skating around there and it wasnt the end of his shift. Bonehead play after bonehead play. I’d take Kalinin over Redden any day now.

  58. Am I the only one who is a little disturbed that Sundin’s Ghost just admitted he thinks Prucha is a cute little elf?

    Wow. Now THAT is creepy.

  59. Mike in IA

Seeing as how the coaching staff cant motivate these players, he has to take it upon himself. He does it to himself. Whether his judgement is clouded or whatever it is. He needs to work on his weakness. There is no shame in asking for help. He 9/10 makes the wrong decision on a play. If knows he doesnt have the same speed he used to, then he shouldnt be pinching the play, like he did mid way through the first. PLayers are going to BLOW right by him. If you know what your weakness are, either dont make those mistakes or correct him. Im sorry but he just isnt the player he used to be and he hasnt been in some time.

Sather gambled and he lost big time.

  60. Butch Goring just called Bill Guerin a “cagey veteran”. There’s a couple of veterans on the Rangers i’d like to SEE in a cage.

    Good call Salty.

  61. Malik I would take in a heart beat over Redden now. Sad I know.. Even Poti… Neither were making 6.5mill

Ive heard from people who are in the know and they all told me before the season that Redden has zero hockey sense and will be a disaster… Im guessing that they were right

  62. Doodie Machetto on

ford, I qualified my statement in that exact way. The worst part about Redden (on the ice) isn’t his play, it’s how much ice time he gets and in what situations. It’s argument #1 on why Renney should be fired.

  63. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

yea mako, no doubt hes never gonna live up to half of what was expected of him. i just know hes better than what hes shown. i just want him to get a goal to maybe get the monkey off his back a little. but at the same token, if he isnt scoring, make damn sure you play hard and he isnt doin that

Exactly, Doodie. It’s like groundhog day. He really has no reason to change his game. According to him, everything is ok. Imagine if the boss kept giving the same job to a guy even after he messed it up over and over and over. Same thing here.

  65. I always knew Redden would not live anywhere near up to his contract and had a strong feeling he’d be the new Garden whipping boy… But not in my wildest nightmares did I ever expect the warm diaper load that he really is. I have no DOUBT in my mind the cocaine rumors are true. I just hope he gets caught redhanded as soon as possible.

  66. Gomez has now made three perfect one time passes crossing into the Isl zone and each time..the recipient DID NOT SHOOT
    He’s doing his job…just syin

  67. Doodie

My bad. I sped by your qualification. But based on gaffe per minute? I still think Kalinin is playing far better than Redden.

  68. scotty the chimp..lol!

ya know, I’m kinda feeling bad for Redden, he did have talent at one point and things have definitely gone south on him in the last few years. Looks like the change of scenery did NOT do him any good. Maybe he’ll do the smart thing and RETIRE at the end of the season!!!

  69. By the way I jus want to give a history lesson to the newb Ranger fans who have crushes on Czech tree elves: Petr Prucha has a dedicated fan base because he scored 30g in his rookie season, most of which came on the PP, and 22 the following year with limited ice/PP time.

    Mistreated player.

  70. Speaking of Petr Prucha, I dont think he’s played a shift yet in the 2nd period. Give him some PP time.

  71. Linda I feel bad for Redden too, kinda in the same way when my ex-wifes hemoroids swell up the size of grapefruits YA THINK NAAAAAAAAA

  72. Its as good a PP goal as any. But it certainly helps having Swiss cheese in goal for the Icelanders.

  73. Redden…6.5 million…2g 17a -10
    Poti…3.5 million…1g 4a -9
    Malik…1.25 million…0g 5a -4
I would take Malik back…I think

  74. Bottom line

This Islander team is bad…they may be good one day but anything less than a win going away is as good as a loss

  75. Maybe Gomez’s family told ole Gomer what McGuire and Milbury said about him LOL

    PRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  76. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

pruuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!! fights better than freakin voros(buster from mythbusters)

  77. Linda that wasnt the main issue, she had a steal plate in her head and every time we went through an e-z pass she would think she was Liza Minelli and start singing cabaret songs

  78. Nothing but HEART for Pru. That was total Ballzzz! Now imagine if anyone else on our team who IS’NT built like a 12yr old would stand up for themselves and their squad.

  79. Rick

That is pretty crappy that there are only a few GM’s that Sather will only deal with. What St. Louis and Phoenix? That sucks. I would hate to see Prucha get wasted on that team.

  80. Mark (the orginal) on

Prucha with an assist and a fight, man he is going to be worn out Renney will have to scratch him for at least the next 5.

  81. Kurt, as long as you’re not David Getz, that’s forgiveable lol!

AF76, from your fingertips to Renney’s or Sather’s eyes! How is it that the smallest guys on the team have the most energy and balls?? (Cally leading the team in hits, Pru lasting longer in a scrum that Virus….)

  82. Gomez looks good, but it is to be expected because the fishsticks have such slow crap at C like comrie.

  83. In regards to the PHX scouts, maybe Sather is trading himself for Don Maloney?

    Staal Wart…agreed!

  84. Maybe PHX scouts are there because Sather is trading Redden’s contract for Janet Gretzky’s gambling debt. Should be about equal money.

  85. damnit to hell, gomez is the 2nd intermission guest~! SHOOT ME NOW!!! since he’s been on this team, i swear he’s been interviewed between periods about 115 times! Sick of hearing him damnit!

prepare yourselves for the eventual shootout.

Ok, the Isles guys are saying gomez is the best player on the ice tonight. He must be doing subtle things that I am missing on my small laptop screen. grrrr

  91. Watching Islanders broadcast. Fischler asks Gomez if he ever gets tired playing the way he does. Gomez says, “I only get tired of you.” Gomez then gives real answer that he thinks he hasn’t actually been playing that way this year.

  92. Dubi or not Dubi on

Only Renney can play a player and make it seem like he’s a healthy scratch. Unless my eyes deceived me, I believe Prucha only got ONE shift all period. Sather is a problem, but crappy decisions like that, benching a fan favorite, is why I HATE Tom Renney.

Linda… try flipping the laptop upside down… u’ll see what the islanders announcers see

  94. Blue Jax 4 those big bad Stloui Blues 1

Must be so worn out from that lesson Renney taught them the other night heh?

  95. “try flipping the laptop upside down… u’ll see what the islanders announcers see”

lol, i KNEW there had to be some kind of secret! I thought they were watching highlights from his days on the devils! Well, he DID score tonight..that must mean Dawes is the 2nd best player on the ice.

  96. Gomez is playing a good game
Set up Cally twice but he wouldnt shoot ( Cally needs some Shanny lessons)
Set up Naz but he shot it into the benches..he needs glasses

  97. thanks kaspar. i have serious video lag here so i’m missing a lot of the action. When the audio and video ARE in sync, they seem to be playing much better tonight than they have in a while. And there’s been some ‘gatherings’ after the whistle that they are not backing away from, maybe the tide is turning??

  98. well kaspar maybe just maybe since Gomez is sort of flying tonight why not switch some players around… maybe put Nik and Prucha on the line with Gomer… let the natural shooters take his passes… but then again… wtf do i know?

  99. Doodie Machetto on

Anyone catch the info for that blood drive? I try to donate blood when I can and if I can get a jersey out of it I’ll travel to the swamp

  100. Only the Rangers could go into a “prevent” defense with a one goal lead. It must feel like a 57 goal lead.

  101. Doodie Machetto on

The Streit goal was entirely Prucha’s fault, but he’s been so good offensively, I don’t know how Renney can play him so little.

  102. wow jaffe and rose are talking about the differences between redden and streit and how the rangers season/power play may have gone if they signed streit for 14 million LESS! c’est la vie eh?

  103. This team reminds me of a turtle when we have a 1 goal lead. Collapse into our shell and hope the Defensive play is enough to keep the 1 goal lead. It’s sad.

  104. Kaspar

I agree on Dawes. I haven’t liked him much this season, but he is playing a really good game so far.

  105. Doodie, isnt it just mind boggling???

Since I am pretty new here, i apologize if someone already said this but,

I call shenanigans on Dolan, Sather, Renney and Pearn.

  106. If that Streit goal was prucha’s fault and he was benched for the rest of the 2nd. Then Gomez, Drury, Kalinin & Redden should never see the ice.

  107. couple things:
give prucha the A, hell rather have him as the C than drury

cally works his tail off but he should absolutely not be on the pp and drury has a terrible shot and doesnt know how to play defense so to use him on the point is just dumb. drury’s only value on offense is junk goals, so he should be camped out by the net

second altho the isles didnt score on their pp yet, it looks a lot better than ours, they actually generated chances

gomez got a fluke goal and now the announcers are going on like he is mario out there

  108. Voros bearing down? The only thing I can see him bear down on is a ham and cheese sandwich! I’m sorry, Redden is sublime now, the new whipping boy has to be Voros.

  109. Doodie Machetto on

MAKO, I agree entirely. But I think it was more that he lost a few shifts while he was in the box for fighting.

  110. ThisYearsModel on

Pretty lame against the worst team in the division. If Danis would not have whiffed, still 1-1.

  111. Doodie Machetto on

I hate the electric guitar backing up the organ. It sounds terrible and ruins our classic organ

  112. What was that just now? Lauryn Hill just popped up with “That thing” song? Is that Toms favorite song? “That Thing” to Tom means Sather… his guilty pleasure

  113. Naslund is lucky he didn’t get called for the dive. It was definitely a penalty on Campoli, but he embellished it.

  114. “Voros bears down on his opponents fists”

    thats just hysterical!

    Roszival loses his balance….oi vey!
Toms real proud!! 3 shots on that power play!

  115. CCCP, thanks for making my brain bleed with that little comment!

UH OH THE DREADED TWO GOAL LEAD lol :-)

nice win tonight! they actually played with pride..now they gotta keep it going!

  116. Dubi or not Dubi on

i think sam has saved up so many SCORESSSS!!!! that that’s why he yelled so loud for an empty netter!

  117. Mark (the orginal) on

It was a must 2 points, and they got it, but that 3rd period was rough to watch. I’m waiting for Sam and Joe to tell me they survived another 5 minutes.

  118. the isles are so terrible they cant even beat the rangers.

i liked the spiritd play from a lot of the guys tonight

  119. Doodie Machetto on

What the hell is with the electric guitar?!? It was in the goal song! It was even in the Rangers Victory song! It sounds terrible.

  120. it doesn’t matter, win or lose, it’s just so hard to watch these games or get excited over anything this team does anymore

I’m pretty sure most NYR fans, if they’re honest with themselves, would admit the same thing

  121. If they don’t play at least as hard in Buffalo Saturday night for all sixty minutes, it will not be pretty.

  122. lol @ Tom Redden!

3rd period was a little on the brutal side, but they got the win, scored more than 2, and they actually showed signs of life! Now to keep it going! As Tom might say, they need to build on this win, to keep the battle level up.

Howie Rose at the end of the game said Tom could work that gum with a little less angst… That was classic.

No post game here, what am I missing besides probably another Gomez interview?

  123. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

see thats what happens when u stick to rennys system!!!! wow im so confident right now in this team i cant wait to watch them eek out another 1 goal game against another farm team and their goalie(who basically stopped almost everything we could throw at him except for a lucky goober of a shot from senor guacomole

  124. Mark (the orginal) on

When does Gomez become a stand up comedian? He is so annoying when he makes these little jokes.

  125. u heard that fans… Scotty asked us to be patient, they will turn this around! Sure, i just would like to know when so i can mark it in my calendar.

  126. Analysis; whooppee doo they beat the Islanders. Fine. You want me to show some emotion? Beat Buff and play an inpsired game on Sunday against Tor.

I don’t care how many assists Drury got or how Gomez skated, they were playing against a very young team. Show me something on Saturday and then we’ll talk.

    Voros out-Korpi in.

    Can you dig it?

  127. if you dont think hank deserved the 1st star your a moron.

also- beating the islanders is kind of like being the smartest kid in special ed at this point

  128. “it doesn’t matter, win or lose, it’s just so hard to watch these games or get excited over anything this team does anymore

I’m pretty sure most NYR fans, if they’re honest with themselves, would admit the same thing”

honestly, i think we’re just looking for things to be happy about. It’s been a long, brutal month, and, at least for me, being down about them this much is becoming a lot of work!!! I want to look on the bright side, and hope they come out of this horrendous malaise they all seem to be in. Granted, if they DO make the playoffs, it may not be for long, but whatever they can do to salvage the rest of the season, I think a lot of us would give them some kind of credit for it.

It’s quite obvious that management and ownership are not changing any time soon, so we just have to hope these guys play for pride in themselves, in their teammates, in the franchise and for the fans the rest of the way.

  129. All Hail King Henrik on

Well, at least we know what it takes for this team to win: Henrik Lundqvist has to play like the best goalie in the world AND get involved in the offense. Hank with the assist; next game he’s going for a goal. Someone’s gotta get this offense going.

    – Petr Prucha has twice the heart of any skater on the Rangers…

    – If Gomez plays like that all the time, and displays the same level of effort, I’ll have much less of a problem with his being on this team. He’s still overpaid, but if he performs like that, it’s tolerable.

  130. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

linda- howie rose n billy jaffe are pretty comedic duo. i like jaffe i wish we could trade announcers and send them down to hartford for speech therapy, verbal diahrea, etc… is it me or does sam look like if he lived in texas or somethin the rednecks might mistake him for a turkey and shoot him. with his jiggly jowels and bird beak nose

  131. henrik was solid but not first star solid in my opinion. don’t call me a moron, completely uncalled for Chris. Did I attack you or anyone else? Try to be mature.

  132. Mako are you freaking kidding me? Damn! Who voted this guy the official interview for every game? Is it because he’s developed into some kind of comedic wiseass?

What pearls of wisdom escaped from Elsie tonight?

  133. I don’t want to see Prucha traded, but since he isn’t being played here, I would like to see him get real playing time somewhere else. Prucha was a player that was brought in for Jagr appeasement. Maybe they are punishing him for that. Either way, the kid has heart and skills. If the Rangers are going to forever refuse to play him, then I hope he finds success somewhere else. This management regime doesn’t deserve him. Let them sign some other gutless 4th line cast-off from some other team and ask him to be a 30 goal scorer.

  134. im not calling you personally a moron. but everyone who keeps ripping him clearly doesnt understand hes teh reason we have more than 2points this whole year

  135. oh my god, I just came up with the perfect way that we can get back at Tom Redden this year…

We need to vote Prucha for the Steven McDonald extra effort award

  136. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

linda- great post, its kinda like at this point, yea we know they still suck and whatever but im just happy we got a win. im tired of bein negativei mean yea its the isles, but they showed some fire and emotion. and sometimes it takes a win against a crap team to get you goin and just imagine if they lost, id feel alot worse for the game at buff. now at least they got some confidence to bring next game. still not close to being contenders but i hate losing. did anyone hear at the end of the game rose said redden with a sort of giggle and then shut up. they really wanted to rip him one and they did alot during the game but it sounded like rose had somethin funny he was gonna say but knew he shouldnt. lol

  137. Linda

Yep. He even made a pale attempt at being funny by poking fun at he wasnt a one of the “3 stars” of the game. he said “my mother texted me Im a star”

    Douche….

  138. Prucha has 2 goals in 2 games getting less than 9 minutes of TOI. Common sense dictates he should play more.

Wade Redden plays an astonishing 26:39. unwatchable.

If everyone on this team had the heart Prucha has, we’d still be at the top of the standings

  139. ‘is it me or does sam look like if he lived in texas or somethin the rednecks might mistake him for a turkey and shoot him. with his jiggly jowels and bird beak nose’

well, i do live in alabama, which is world renowned for rednecks too. Unfortunately, i don’t live in the “REAL” alabama, that’s maybe a 20 mile drive from here, but I’ll tell you one thing…Sam would stick out like a sore thumb here! He’s so…so…so WHITE! And by that I mean, pale, milky, elmers glue like! 20 miles away from me, they just might shoot him and put him in de ol’ turkey fryer! Poor sam, he’s just gettin old!

  140. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

toots got 8 goals 19 assists on coloumbus. every damn player we trade or lose excells and reaches their potential. its this damn passive d style. renny please go!!! stop killing our young guys!!

  141. I gotta go with Cally for the Steven McDonald Award.

Wow, the Pack lost 1-0 to the Sound Tigers. Avery may cause the Rangers to win, but he’s causing the Pack to lose :(

  142. Mako..thats just insane! he needs to cut the comedy routine and freakin play like he cares and is not just collecting his millions! And maybe with $20 of those millions he can buy himself a book of jokes and quips! Hell, if I was his mother, at this point I’d be telling him how nonchalant he’s been, how his efforts lately have sucked, he looks lazy and disinterested, that he was a disgrace to the family, and to alaska, for not playing with the heart of a champion! Shaken player syndrome!!! In other words, I’d beat him with a dvd collection of his 150 interviews since he’s been a Ranger!

  143. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

farm life? watch out boy i’ll get my john deere tractor and run over your kia sephia

  144. Hank has as many PP points as Redden over the last several months. Maybe they will put Reitz on the point for the PP. He seems to be able to get through a low, hard shot. Worth a try!

  145. What Ron Duguay is thinking hosting the post game show with only Deb Placey: “Giggity giggity giggity goo”

  146. Well said Joe-!!

Joe in DE February 18th, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Prucha has 2 goals in 2 games getting less than 9 minutes of TOI. Common sense dictates he should play more.

Wade Redden plays an astonishing 26:39. unwatchable.

If everyone on this team had the heart Prucha has, we’d still be at the top of the standings

  147. Linda,

“‘is it me or does sam look like if he lived in texas or somethin the rednecks might mistake him for a turkey and shoot him. with his jiggly jowels and bird beak nose’”

LMAO!! Sam’s nose is a victim of the pinocchio effect, the more he lies (shills) the bigger it gets and it does keep looking bigger, don’t you think.

  148. Gomez is THE prime example of what poor coaching will do to a hard working player. Gomez left it on the ice every night last season. He didn’t click with Jagr like he was supposed to but you could SEE that he was doing everything he could do to play HIS game at 100% regardless of what others were doing.

This season, he’s disappeared long stretches at a time and has been visibly disinterested in the games. Gomez is (was?) a hard worker who got a very disciplined NHL foundation by one of the best, no bullshit organizations in the league.

He’s NOT Gretzky but he’s a great player who’s been a key player in two Cup championships. Blame Renney for letting Gomez gradually discover that he can get away with murder in NY.

  149. “Blame Renney for letting Gomez gradually discover that he can get away with murder in NY.”

True, but I also blame Sather for not giving Hossa the contracts of Redden + Kalinin.

  150. I was at the game tonight via my friend’s uncle who got a suite and my friend invited me. When we left we all had to take the elevator down and its packed in the elevator. I look up and see gravey. I told him congrats on getting ur number retired and he held the door open for everyone.

  151. True, but I also blame Sather for not giving Hossa the contracts of Redden + Kalinin.

    ………

I think Hossa’s prime initiative was to go win a Cup this year at a discount and then up his price tag for a long and lucrative contract.

I don’t think Hossa and the NYR were ever on each others radar at all.

  152. I had the opportunity to meet Gomez once after the PHX loss last year (5-1) through a mutual friend in the Garden Family room. He was beyond pissed about the game. I remember walking away impressed how much more hockey players give a crap vs other sports. From my experience i find it hard to believe he is just cashing checks.

  153. Last time Prucha was good, two years ago. Last time Redden was good, two years ago. Coincidence? I think not. Prucha’s elvish powers wore down as did Redden’s supply of Columbian marching powder…..

  154. Re: Hossa

Apperently he’s becoming more of a team player in DET. Dropped the gloves tonight in defense of teammates and saved a special puck for a teammate after a goal as well… who knows, maybe he’ll stay there…

  155. Ovechkin scores an absolutely insane goal tonight, 42nd of the year.

That dude is completely out of control. Sidney who?

  156. I think that the car maker Audi is throwing away their marketing dollars…During the Rangers telecast, the Iceholes get a penalty and Sam Rosen says, “The New York Rangers Power play is brought to you by Audi”….

Knowing that Audi sponsors this horrible PP, I would never buy one now….If Audi really wanted to make an impact with us fans, they should have Sam say something like –

“The Wade Redden sucks sentiment shared by all NY Rangers fans is brought to you by Audi”….

Then I may think about buying my wife one of them big fuggin Q7’s

  157. if they deal with Phoenix they should get Peter Mueller(R) and Keith Yandle(D) if they arent after Doan

  158. Gotta say, im not happy they won this. Renney’s job is back to normal, and that’s a major disappointment.

I cant see how anyone can get excited over a 2-1 win (minus that empty netter) against the worst team in the league.

I saw Pelino whisper into Renney’s ear, he probably said “This will save you for another 15 games at least”

Did anyone see Aves fall on that goalie, lol that was vintage Aves, and it looked like he was blaming it on Artie, even funnier.

  159. Carp –

I was lucky enough to be in the second row for that game last night and I watched very carefully. Sorry, it isn’t the talent level. The Rangers have eons more talent. It is absolutely, 100% the coaching that is the problem. Gomez has nobody to pass to because guys aren’t coached as to how to get open, where to hit the seams, where to go. There is no sustained attack at all because the team sits back in a 1-2-2 as often as they can. The defensemen never jump into the play and whatever talents Redden does have are completely buried in this system. And the PP and defensive zone coverage remain anemic and atrocious, respectably, and those are all coaching issues. Remeber Streit’s goal off him cutting back door? I found myself mid-third period screaming “back door, back door” (I was sitting in that zone) as Streit did it again, luckily the Isles couldn’t get him the puck.

  160. Peter,

Maybe you should apply for the head coaching position of the NY RANGERS. “BACKDOOR, BACKDOOR” LOL hahaha

a win is a win, something the team needs.
As the great Ric Flair once said ” WOOOOOOOO”

  161. And this one will last a lifetime on

We squeaked by the worst team in the league. But it is a rivalry game and two points in regulation.

A winning streak of 5 or 6 right now will put us in good position.

Tom, do not scratch Prucha anymore. When Korpedo is healthy scratch Voros.

  162. Carp, don’t forget, when you fill out the 50 page application for NYR coach, you hand write it!! Sather loves that!!! It got Trottier the job for awhile!!!

  163. jerkins perkins(mike in ia) on

guys if youre worried about renny, dont. he wont be coaching this team next season when they barely squeeze into the PO and get b slapped out by boston or joisey. and if he is still the coach, then you know sather is indeed rotting in the msg vault with al trautwig

  164. Doodie Machetto on

“What Ron Duguay is thinking hosting the post game show with only Deb Placey: “Giggity giggity giggity goo” ”

    Best comment of the year.

  165. Too bad we can’t play the Isles every night.

One win, 2pts, woop-tee-doo. A soft goal by Gomer and an empty netter to make it 3-1. We crushed them. “Really gave the Isles something to think about,” is what Renney is saying now I am sure.

Dru-Pru-Dawes the best line on the ice. No question. How Prucha cannot be playing the powerplay is still a mystery to me. The kid is all heart.

Don Maloney at the game last night…figures…he’s one of only about 5 GMs in the league who will even talk to Sather. Him, JD, Kevin Lowe, and maybe one or two other guys who fleeced Sather back when Leetch and Kovalev were dumped are the only guys who take his calls. I will say this, if Marc Staal gets traded for anyone, I might put a bounty on Sather’s head, Reggie Dunlop-style. Should we speculate? Gretzky surely wants a kid like Prucha. That would be my first guess. Jovanovski? Can we even afford that dude? Is he as old as Naslund? I don’t know any of their players other than that kid Boedker who they would NEVER part with. I would trade Staal for that kid….that much I WILL say.

Any updates on Avery? I heard some comments above, but anyone have a link to see him in action?

Looking at the next 5 games….Buffalo, Toronto x 2, FL, and Colo….I mean if I didn’t witness the last 10 games, I would say we should get 8 of 10 points in the next 5. But with this team, we could just as easily get 2 of 10.

At least we beat the Fishsticks….

  166. I have a feeling Renney may keep his job for now and get quiely moved on in the summer (to a front office position) – any sacking of Renney now would simply put pressure on Slats to go too.

Maloney is going to be looking for young and cheap talent – Dawes, Dubi, Cally, Staal, Girardi should be on his shopping list (plus some of the guys in Hartford – AA, Sangs, Sauer, Parenteau, Byers). Its up to Slats to negotiate without using most of those names – but he’d have to be a hypnotist to convince another GM to take Dreaden or Virus.
I would say the most vulnerable at the moment are: Prucha, Dawes, Dubinsky, Kalinin and possibly Roszival – the others who the fans might want to move have no-trade’s or prohibitive contracts.

  167. Nah

I would rather see Prucha play on the top line with Gomez and perhaps Zherdev. Its a pipe dream, it wont ever happen. That would make a good 1st pp unit. How about dropping Naslund down a line?

  168. I don’t know how much of a great trade we could make with PHX. They’re hurting for cash, and the most beneficial trades for us would be ones in which we dump large, long-term contracts (Redden, etc). Can PHX afford those?

Otherwise, it’s just shifting spare parts around, and nothing that will fix a fundamental flaw in our roster.

  169. Rumors are Jovanowski to NJ because PHX is broke and cannot afford his contract… so no chance we’re moving Redden… plus he probably added PHX to his NMC.

We could go for a guy like Morris, but it will take alot.

  170. Anybody else hear Henrik call Gomez “Mr. Muffin” in the Post today? Apparently because he has a soft shot.

    Good to know.

  171. The only player I would be interested in is Doan. Otherwise, not a whole lot of talent is in that club. Dont know why there always has to be transaction between our two clubs. Sather you SUCK, you’ve alienated more than half the NHL to trade to and from!!!!

  172. Doodie Machetto on

Every year Jovo is in the trade rumors, and every year people need to be reminded of the same thing: He has a NTC, and he has openly said how he likes Phoenix and doesn’t want to move his family.

  173. Finally, I found the information I was looking for. I have been doing research on this subject, and for two days I keep finding web-sites that are supposed to have what I am searching for, only to be discouraged with the lack of what I wanted. I wish I would have found your web-site sooner! I had about 40% of what I needed and your web-site has that, and the rest of what I had to have to finish my research. Thank you and keep up the good work!

  174. This is strange, but I can only see another 50 percent the post, is this the internet site or my online browser? I think I should reboot.
