Updated: Voros, Gomez and Naslund

Markus Naslund said today after practice that he’d like to see lines with a little more chemistry, and he might get to see how that works as soon as tomorrow night in Dallas. Naslund worked on a line with Scott Gomez and Aaron Voros in today’s practice.

That makes the rest: Nigel Dawes, Lauri Korpikoski and Ryan Callahan; Blair Betts, Colton Orr and Fredrik Sjostrom; and Chris Drury, Brandon Dubinsky and Nikolai Zherdev.

“We played a number of games with the lines exactly as they’d been, I don’t know 6, 7, maybe in a row,” Renney said. “We went into Boston did a few changes there and gave them a heck of a run for their money. I thought we were dominant against Atlanta. So, at the end of the day you put combinations of people together that you think are going to work and there’s no question chemistry or continuity or synergy is important. At the same time if the game plan is something everyone understands and gets their head around, it shouldn’t matter a whole lot who you’re playing with. But you try to capitalize on what each guy can bring to the line.”

The other piece of news out of the day has to do with the flu. Goalie Henrik Ludqvist and defenseman Paul Mara missed practice with the flu. Coach Tom Renney said he expected Lundqvist to play, but might pull a player from Hartford to make the trip to Dallas in place of Mara. Dmitri Kalinin will not make the trip.

Steve Valiquette said he was ready should he be needed, despite his own cold.

“My life is, I’m ready to go,” Valiquette said with a laugh.

Petr Prucha is a healthy scratch again.

And our own Journal News columnists Rick Carpiniello (aka Carp) and Sam Borden will take on the issue of Barry Bonds and steroids (gotta love the Daily News backpage tease to the story “Urine Trouble”) on the Faceoff Blog.

AFTERNOON UPDATE:  The Rangers just recalled D Corey Potter from Hartford. You’d have to guess he’d be a scratch tomorrow unless Mara doesn’t make the trip.

  1. Carp,

Thanks for reinvigorating this blog. Question: do any of the Rangers upper mgmt. travel with the team at all times? We know Sather only goes to road games broadcast in Canada but what about somebody else? If not always, how often are they on the road? Is it in line with what is typical of the rest of the NHL teams? Thanks.

  2. Jane: Any insight on who might be the defenseman recalled from Hartford? My guess is Corey Potter, but I’d love to see Sanguinetti get a look.

  3. Answered my own question; as per the AHL Transaction Wire, Corey Potter has been recalled by the Rangers.

  4. “I thought we were dominant against Atlanta”

    Really??? How? Where?
Dominant against a 14th place team.

    FIRE RENNEY!

  5. Only someone like Renney would use the terms “we were dominant” and “we gave them a heck of run for their money’ to describe two games with one goal scored

I can barely read this without covering the eyes and ears of my Ronnie Greshner poster and letting loose spittle-curses…how can anyone interviewing this guy keep a straight face???

  6. Zhervalev:

you may be onto something. have a few goals roll in off of his butt…and then bang! trade him for….Rissmiller? Claude Lemieux? Per Djoos?

  7. renney must be high.. i have no idea what team he watches on a nightly basis but dominant against atlanta.? maybe he was replaying tape of that playoff series that we swept them in.. this guy really needs to go, if i was a reporter questioning him i would laugh to the point of crying right in his face.. someone wake this clown up from his dream..

yey voros is in the lineup friday night cant wait to see him do 15 stupid things to cost this team the game..! YES!

prucha do yourself a favor demand a trade or have renney hit by a car b/c this moron will never give you a consistent chance to prove anything in this lineup..

  8. This whole Voros on the 1st line thing is giving me hope that I might actually play in the NHL someday.

  9. Please stop linking a hockey blog to baseball.

Renney is utterly clueless. I can’t even elaborate on how dumb he is. Carry on.

  10. Yea thanks, but who cares about Bonds and steroids when your a hockey fan, jeez.

    Renney=Idiot

  11. if they were so freakin “dominant”, Tommy boy, then why did you have to run them thru your first bag skate in 4 years? huh, pal?

Renney is even more of a clueless disgrace day by day.

notice that he talks again about the “game plan”, meaning that joke of a trap that he insists on. so, that won’t change. thus, making line changes are just re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

  12. Haha, Voros with Gomez. That’s like oil and water, they just dont mesh. Voros cannot skate, so Gomez is going to rush into the zone and it will be comically (though not really) watching Voros still at the defensive blueline trying to catch up. I dont get why Voros plays so much. He’s slow, he’s not dominant in front of the net, and he has terrible hands. Please take him off the PP.

Renney makes such dumb comments. I mean he likes Voros in the lineup because he’s big and “physical,” but I guess Renney doesnt realize that size dosent necessarily lead to the player using it effectively, has he so quickly forgotten Malik.

I agree, I think Prucha should demand a trade. I dont think a single fan would hold it against him.

  13. The other night during the Atlanta-NYR game on Graves night it seemed that Rosen and Joe were more intent on telling us about upcoming Knick games then they were at describing the action….oh….never mind thats right.

Rangers are so boring we need Knicks and baseball stuff I guess

  14. I am starting to think the man is mentally ill. I know he’s a loser. But I think he might be clinically unwell.

  15. Yep. Time to let the caged bird free. I’ll give Prucha a pass too. I love the kid, has amazing heart and I know he is a talent. SET PRUCHA FREE!!!!!!!

  16. Speaking of Graves night, did anyone catch JD discussing how Graves was the type of player who would let others take credit for goals he scored. (was he alluding to Game 7?). The best line of the Atlanta game was Joe stating sincerely that the Rangers need to score (it was very Maddenesque). I’ve never liked Joe, but the putrid play of the Rangers only heightens my disgust for Joe.

  17. OK timeout.

Carp I don’t mean to get in your grill and/or Jane I don’t want to recall Chevy Chase’s famous quote with “Jane” in it….

But where are the unbiased media people when Renney says stuff like that? I mean come on! Where is the journalistic integrity?

We dominated Atlanta? Usually one would think the score was like 4-0 before someone claimed dominance. We gave Boston all they could handle? If by that you mean, we took a ton of shots from the perimiter that my 3 yr old could handle, then I agree.

We got shut out for 119 mins out of 120 in the last two games where we dominated and gave them all they could handle. I mean if that wasn’t so pathetically sad it would be funny.

He does realize that goals and quality scoring chances are part of the full package of dominating a game or giving a team all they can handle? What kind of metrics is he using to define the phrases “dominated” and “gave them all they could handle?”

I mean seriously. Which of you journalists are taking him to task for those assinine statements and asking him for definitions of those horsecrap phrases?

    Anyone?

  18. I’m not a fan of Voros’ play but I will say this for the guy – other than the occasional scrum from Mara or Dubinsky – no one on the team other than Voros is consistently mixing it up with the opposing team before and after the play.

  19. what did u expect renney to say? “oh we really suk… our overpaid so called “veterans” dont do sh*t and really dont challenge anyone on any given day… my system is crap and i am the one who is killing this team… but hey, im still the coach” its like this… we are all at the point (i shouldn’t say all… most of us) where no matter what “Orville Redenbacher” aka Tom Renney does… will be met with negativity and chants to fire his popcorn a$$.

  20. “we gave them a heck of run for their money”

This is what coaches say when they don’t expect to win. This is what Varsity coaches tell their 0-18 teams when they lose by only 3 touchdowns.

“I thought we were dominant against Atlanta”

This is called lying. Or even worse… Plagirism. The only time during the game that could be possibly be construed as “dominant” is when the team played outside of his system. 10 minutes of speed, desperation and a forecheck, all carried out autonomously by players who WANT to play this way does not constitute dominance…. and the miniscule positives that can be taken away from that game are in NO WAY attributable to Renney. He’s taking credit for something that’s not his. The statement should read:

“I thought they [my player] were dominant in the 3rd period]

  21. If I were Sather I’d kick Renneys ass just for the fact that his handling of Prucha not only deprives “our” team of a scorer but he even drove down the guys trade value if some other team were interested….

A miracle has taken place here; proven offensive players-some with trophies, stanley cups et al have, according to the Renney supporters, all coincidentally “lost” their games when they came to NY from other systems where they had succeded in the past…you hear it all the time…Jagr mopes, Shanny was selfish, Drury is passionless, Gomez and idiot, Redden a floater, Prucha was a fluke etc etc etc…

Larry Brooks knows and soon we all well……

TSN REPORTING AARON VOROS HAS BEEN TRADED FOR A JUMBO PARKING CONE. ANALYSTS AGREE THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION HAS RECEIVED THE SHORT END OF THE DEAL.

honestly, I hope he’s on the first line to be showcased for a trade.

  23. Renney is right, we were dominant against the Thrash, if any of these 2nd & 3rd liners could finish or be successful on the power play no one would be berating the best coach this team has had in more than a decade.

    Ace

  24. jcl.

I don’t think he was alluding to game 7 against Vancouver. I believe that it was Noonan and Messier in front, Graves was off to the side though I could be completely wrong, it was a while since I’ve seen it.

  25. The thing is, Voros was used on the first line with Gaborik a lot last season. This might actually be the smart move in some strange way. The smarter move would be Prucha playing. I couldn’t help but crack up at him thinking we were dominant against Atlanta. Sure, we had all of the good scoring chances, it seemed, but that didn’t really do it for us. We didn’t seem to have that much sustained pressure either, just hit it and quit it.

  26. Ace, Ace… u dont have to let your name known twice to us… trust us…WE GET IT! now, take the plugs our of your ears and switch the channel…

  27. I think it’s wishful thinking for people to think the Rangers are showcasing Voros. The guy has a 3 year contract worth one million a year. The guy JUST played in 100th game. He has a whopping 15 career goals and 29 points. Who wants to pay someone that much for two additional years with that type of production, plus it’s not like he dominates when he is on the ice. He doesnt hit hard, he cannot fight, and if he were being showcase, then putting him with Gomez will only highlight more how slow he is.

  28. jason

I posted the you tube video of that 3rd goal a few days back to see who was in front of the net and yes Noonan, Grave and Mess were all near the net…

  29. If “dominant” means we took a hell of alot of perimeter shots then yes we were dominant..in fact we’re dominant all the time

If dominant means we “forechecked” and “had the other guys backed up” that happened the first few weeks of the year and since then at the END OF SOME GAMES…

  30. doodie machetto on

“Renney is right, we were dominant against the Thrash, if any of these 2nd & 3rd liners could finish or be successful on the power play”

I’m not even going to touch that half of the statement.

“no one would be berating the best coach this team has had in more than a decade.”

That half is the worst statement I’ve ever heard. “The best we’ve had in half a decade.” That’s like Cubans saying at least Castro is a better dictator than Hitler and Stalin (NO, IM NOT COMPARING RENNEY OR ANYONE ELSE TO ANY OF THESE PEOPLE). Point is, the lesser of two (or in our case, five) evils is still evil.

Just because Renney is the best from the past decade doesn’t mean he is good. Yeah, some competition he is getting from Ron Low, John Muckler, Brian Trottier, and Glen Sather.

  31. Dominate = Skate the puck to the red line, dump it in, chase, wait for opposing rush, then rinse well and repeat. I am so depressed about the way this team is “led” I don’t have words.

  32. doodie machetto on

Sorry, “more than a decade” not half a decade. I was thinking about a “half a century” comment regarding Castro.

  33. Renney picks player names from a hat and that makes the lines for the games.

    Don’t believe me? Watch!

    /sarcasm

  34. I mean, Betts is much more valuable to this team than Voros and I think he only makes 650K. He has half the points that Voros has but I mean it’s hard to blame him when he plays every night with Orr. Sather you’ve turned MSG and the Rangers into listless ghosts. I honestly fall asleep during some games, and the few times I’ve been to the Garden this season, it’s so dead…I enjoy more going to see them in Philly (plus it’s way cheaper…thanks Dolan).

  35. was it Michel Bergeron who wore a gym warmup suit behind the bench?

maybe Renney can wear a clown suit. that would be appropriate.

  36. I’m so happy Renney is coach and you little girls get to act like your on ‘The View’ bitching about him constantly. And you guys keep watching, every game LOL Hows that feel?

    Little? You call 5’9 little!

  38. Jean Guy Talbot wore the sweat-suit

what is “The View’ and be careful cause…I’m a lawya

  39. No, ya know what a joke is? Someone using the handle of a benched player who can’t stay on his feet consistently to make the lineup.

  40. Hahaha, Dominant against the Trahsers ?? What the fugg does this geek see that we don’t ?? Every time he talks to the media, i hate him more. The things he says are so ridiculous, and make no sense. He tries to use big words to cover it up. He’s such an idiot.

I don’t get why Voros goes on the top line. What has he done to get that opportunity ?

Put Dubi on the wing, now that he’s playing there. Or at least have Nicky Z-Gomer-Dubi.

Gotta put Vally in tomorrow night, forget Hank, he blew the last game, so he deserves to get benched. Vally has been better in his last couple of games, than Hank has anyway.

  41. doodie machetto on

Kaspar, if The View were the only channel on your sattelite, I’d know why so many people in that part of the world drink.

  42. I know CCP, you gys can’t stand that fans actually like Renney and come here to rain on your hatefest. Renney could win us a Cup and you';d still have the negatives flying around here.

Listen, just cause you all have miserable lives doesn’t mean everyone agrees with your diatribe.

Renney is one of the most winningest coaches in team history. Don’t give me that crap about how he won’t get us a Cup because thats just silly – this team has 4 cups in its existence, but you idiots think we can get close with a disciplinarian or one or two trades LOL

Again, how do you guys live with yourselves knowing Renney is here at least through this year and Drury, Gomez & Redden are here even longer ;o)

  43. Well if you keep throwing sh#t at a wall it will eventually stick, Voros will eventually have a mediocre game given the opportunities he’s been given, he’ll be then set for the season as a first liner and first PP unit lock.

It’s the same approach Renney uses with the PP in general and underperforming franchise players.

  44. Voros is just another example of a player not being used properly. Renney wouldn’t put Cullen on the PP point, he plays Callahan on the first line, he overplays Betts, he has no idea what to do with Gomez. Voros is not supposed to be a skill player — he should be on the 4th line with Betts and Sjostrom and could probably get them to score occasionally.

  45. “Gotta put Vally in tomorrow night, forget Hank, he blew the last game, so he deserves to get benched. Vally has been better in his last couple of games, than Hank has anyway.”

You’re either a Rocket scientist or you work at a salad bar, not sure which…..

  46. Renney blames Prucha’s lack of size for keeping him out of the lineup. The argument would hold water if Prucha was constantly injured by playing a physical game. The guy hasn’t missed a ton of games in his time as a Ranger. He had the knee injury that cost him 8 games and the separated shoulder that cost him 16 games, but other than that, nothing major. Other than that, he’s played a pretty full schedule. Injuries happen, it’s hockey. Mara lost time with the busted orbital. Shanahan with the concussion and then with the leg injury. Straka missed time with the concussion…everybody gets hurt sooner or later. But the guy isn’t Gaborik fragile. He’s held up fine for 3 years, and comes to camp in top physical condition. If he was heavier, he’d probably be slower. He just doesn’t have a big frame. For Christ sakes, let the guy play, or trade him.

FIRE RENNEY. DUMP SATHER. FREE PRUCHA

  47. I just made up a song, I call it:

    ALL ALONG THE MEDIA-WATCH TOWER

    Outside in the distance…

Most of the media watch as Renny scowls….

He puts the Rangers thru a grueling practice to punish them…

but then he says they were dominant (Heh?)

…and only brooksie starts to howllllllllll!!!!!

  48. “Most winningest” Ace! You’re a scholar! And the bestest friend a coach could have!

P.S. Voros falls down more times per shift than Prucha does.

  49. chemistry…

I thought Chris Drury, Brandon Dubinsky and Nikolai Zherdev were awful…I actually feel sorry for Dubinsky. Although perhaps these three can get it together once Brandon truly gets comfortable on the wing….

Sounds like Renney is trying to re-enact the “West Coast Express”….Naslund most productive seasons were with Brendan Morrison (aka Gomez…fast skating center, avoids high traffic, play maker) and Bertuzzi…(aka Voros, big lug, won’t ever have to worry about going off side)

Can someone remind me why Voros did so well at the beginning of the year? Was it just dumb luck or does he have some sort of hands…he did get 9 points in 8 games??

  50. Kaspar, stick to your day job, please…

‘Prucha25′, I’ve been around since Sam started his blog here. Its always the same…people who are realistic about this team stay away from these kind of places. The idiots who berate Renney every 5 minutes are the ones that blogs like this exist for. Larry “I’m not very liked amongst people in my own profession’ Brooks caters to you guys as well, might as well, sells more papers then ‘2nd & 3rd liners in line for playoffs…again’.

  51. I hope Prucha gets traded, its a disgrace at this point what Tom “Douche bag” Renney is doing to him. AND I hope he goes to another team and explodes on goals and assists

Voros on the first line? Tom can I have some of your crack? cause it sure seems like some good stuff

Carp, NOW we really have a reason to want Renney fired, along with the other 1000 reasons we had before this move

PLEASE GOD!!! Let Renney get hit in the head with a stick again, and this time keep him out for the rest of the season

I cant take much more of this

  52. Hey Kaspar, where you going with that gun in your hand??

Hey Kaspar, where you going with that gun in your hand??

I’m going to shoot Renney-caught him messing round with my team.

I’m going to shoot Renney-caught him messing round with my team.

  53. Ace writes: “Renney is one of the most winningest coaches in team history!”

Teacher says: “Now Ace, next year in third grade you’ll need to work on your grammar, all right?”

  54. JOE

I know, it’s pretty sickening. Like i said, he must have caught Pruchs finger banging was daughter, that’s why he gets treated like this. There’s nothing this kid can do to get in the lineup. He’ll be traded soon enough, or maybe Renney will just convince Slats to keep him around so he has no shot at winning the Cup.

BTW – If Nyr does win a Cup, then ill be convince Renney is a good coach, but unfortunately it wont happen. The Sharks had a really good coach, that just couldn’t get them passed the 2nd round, and they fired him, now look where they are, they’re the best in hockey, next to the Bruins. If this year ends up the same as the last 3, then it’s time to move on. Get rid of Renney before the good coaches are gone.

  55. Hey Edmund(God, I hope thats not your real name) – Voros has been shitty, that doesn’t mean Prucha looks great all of a sudden. How many points did Prucha get in his 11-13 minutes the last 3 games he played? Just as many as Voros…

doogie747 – Against ATL Dubi missed a wide open chance as he came from the side of the net, no one checked him, he was there all alone and didnt bury it – how is that anyones fault but Dubi’s?

  56. Orr….that comment about Hank blowing the last game has called for a smackdown. Sorry.

The other day you said something to House and how mad you got when she said you hadn’t been watching long enough.

She’s 100% right. Either that or you are an immature little snotnose punk of about 17 yrs old. Not sure which?

Hank blew the game? Dude you are f-ing deranged. Glad Ace smacked you down first.

Get a clue. And like it or not, if you have only been watching hockey for 5 or 7 years, then you just haven’t seen enough to know enough and your blaming Hank for the loss prooves it.

Your comments are funny sometimes. Very observant other times. And then just totally off the wall and ignorant at other times.

Saying Hank blew the game against Atlanta shows how little you really know. It’s one thing to be emotional. It’s another to be ignorant. Explain how the 1 goal he gave up in reg where 3 NYRs were in the crease and 2 Thrashers were there outside the crease unmolested was his fault? Then tell me how he should stop the puck that nicked the posted and went in the SO? Maybe, just maybe, that SO goal that snuck in under his arm was his blame. But we only scored one goal in the SO anyway.

And regarding Voros on the top line: Yes I don’t love that call either. But (a) he does get in the crease and annoy the goalie and D which could create space for Gomer and Naz and (b) he did play with Gaborik on the 1st line in Minnesota. He hasn’t done much to deserve it, but at this point it can’t be much worse than what we have seen thus far.

Orr….grow up a little bit and read some history or learn more about the game before spouting ignorant stuff.

  57. I like ace. i also like the word “diatribe.” just looked it up. gonna use it in a couple of my posts. might take the edge off my miserable life.

  58. “BTW – If Nyr does win a Cup, then ill be convince Renney is a good coach, but unfortunately it wont happen. The Sharks had a really good coach, that just couldn’t get them passed the 2nd round, and they fired him, now look where they are, they’re the best in hockey, next to the Bruins. If this year ends up the same as the last 3, then it’s time to move on. Get rid of Renney before the good coaches are gone.” – Orrs right hand

Wow, you fail so badly, comparing SJ’s talent to our teams. Good luck with that.

  59. Ace, did you like that most excellentest trap we played the other night against ATL? I can’t believe you think it could be the most goodest system available.

  60. MAKO & Jason

Graves gets cross checked to the ice in front of the crease, as Noonan shoots on McLean. THe puck bounces loose and as the Canuck player (I think it was JOhn McIntyre) tried to back the puck while on his knees, Graves whacks the back of McIntyre’s glove and the puck goes in. Now, maybe since Graves didn’t actually touch the puck, it should be Noonan’s goal but Mess didn’t touch it.

  61. Not sure that when someone calls himself ‘Ace’ that he ought to be worrying about somebody else who goes by Edmund.

  62. ‘Ford’ – Thats not my name brainiac. Edmund could very well be his name. Its old and tired, just like the jokes he’s trying to use.

  63. NEWMAN

He was good enough in regulation, but blew it in the shootout. He’s the best goalie in the shootout, Nyr played a shit game, but somehow managed to get it to OT, until Renney decides to play his usual defense first OT, and bring it to the shootout. and just like that, Hank cant make a single save in the shootout. If this were last year, or the year before, id let it go, but not anymore. Hank’s good, and obviously id rather have him than Weekes, or Dunham. But i got annoyed with that last game. He cant win every shootout, but it was fuggin Graves night, step it up. And that one goal he fuggin gave up, was HIS fault, he made a stupid play, and yeah the D did shit to help him out, but he put himself in that position. It’s not just Hank, it’s the whole team, but he sealed the deal.

Vally deserves to play, he’s been good.

  64. Agreed this team doesn’t have the firepower that SJ has, but SJ also has pretty much every player on their roster playing at their career bests. Marleau is having an awesome year, Setoguchi is breaking out, Thornton is being Thornton, Nabokov is stellar, as well as Boucher. Dan Boyle is playing at the top of his game, and Rob Blake still has game.

NY is in the position their in because everyone is playing below their ability. There is a reason why NY is the place where players go to die. The coaching here has been crap since Iron Mike. Renney is a decent coach if you want to call making the playoffs and getting ousted in the first or second round a successful season. If you want to win it all, you gotta go a different direction. Sather’s insane personnel decisions are no better

  65. “Hey, Joe” by Jimi H

didn’t you get Hendrix filtered in Lithuania USSR thru the curtain?

I am so bored by boredom. I usually skip fun activities on Friday/Saturday to watch the Rangers but not this time. I am going ahead with that trip to the Mall now.

What the fugg does growing up, and learning aboot shit from the past have to do with Hank blowing that game ? It’s my opinion, and im sticking to it, im not trying to convince people that it’s his fault, but to me it is, and i cant be convinced that it’s not.

  69. So “Ace,” i take it that you like playing a neutral zone trap at home against the worst defensive team in hockey, and then “dominating” as a result.

Joe in DE – Again, you’re saying SJ is comparable to our team – they have 2 cup winning Dmen, one of if not the best passers in the game in Thornton, top ten picks like Setoguchi, you can’t compare this NYR team to one of the best lineups in all of hockey. We are made up of 2nd & 3rd liners.

You guys whine about every little thing Renney does, but ultimately this is what Sather gave him and he’s taken the team to the playoffs each year he’s here. Okay, lets say for argument that was Jagr & Henke – well, what about this year? If we go to the playoffs(which i’m betting we do), he did it w/o Jagr & with a less than perfect Hank.

Maybe he doesnt get us a Cup, but the youth of this team will benefit from being involved in playoff hockey, yet again.

  76. JOE IN DE

I used to be like that, just glad to make it, but im getting tired of embarrassing eliminations, especially the way they get eliminated.

Honestly, i don’t know if a team has every exited the playoffs in such a depressing way in 3 straight years, not counting Cup Finals.

    1) Four Game Sweep in 06
    2) 7 Seconds away from taking a 3 game lead, going back to the Garden, but blow it and lose in OT, and then lose the next game at home, where we were undefeated in the playoffs.
    3) Blow a 3 goal lead in game 1, then in game 3 come back from down two goals before Hollweg rapes his teammates. Then come back down two goals in game 5, before losing in OT.

Every year has been worse, and i cant take much more of that crap, it ruins my whole summer, literally. And with the team this is, it looks like the ending will be similar, if not worse.

  77. Artie,

Thanks for the play by play, I didn’t get a chance to watch it Mako told me Graves was infront BUT if thats the way it happened, it’s Noonan’s goal since he was the last Ranger to make contact with the puck before it went in.

  78. doodie machetto on

Ace, I understand your support of Renney after a decade of bad coaches. And Renney isn’t the worst thing this team has going for it, he really isn’t.

The problem is we’re stuck with the roster we have. This roster is never going to win a cup with Tom Renney at the helm. That’s not to say they won’t make the playoffs, maybe even win a round, and by some longshot two. But he can’t get this group to the cup. And that’s not even saying he’s a bad coach. He could be one of the best coaches in the NHL. But if he can’t win with this group of players, doesn’t it stand to reason to try someone else?

Sometimes a coach can be a fine coach, but the team and the coach can still just be wrong for each other.

  79. So, we were dominant against Atlanta, Voros is being rewarded for his stellar play with 1st line minutes, and Prucha continues to sit despite our lack of goal scoring.
When did the Rangers move their practice facility to crazyland?

  80. I’m starting to think that Tom might not have fully recovered from that blow to the head he took in Columbus earlier this year. Maybe he’s still suffering concussion symptoms!

  81. Some of you seem to get it.

    Western team = (more)Western scouts.

“1st line”(I agree our personel is horrible in that category) = increased TOI.

    Increased TOI = Showcasing

Showcasing = Trade deadline is a few weeks away.

Trade deadline a few weeks away = Management will decide who gets more icetime.

btw JJP, V DID play about half of his games last season on Minn’s top line, I like that you know that. There’s also a legendary coach up there that no one questions his ability to run a team that put him there.

New job is going well…thanks for asking! haha Doesn’t leave much time for blogging, but I can still pretty much keep up with the news. I liked Zip’s breakdown of what the Rangers can clear up to bring someone in this year, and what the qualifying offers would need to be for next season. Looks like we’ll have another “roster-flip” on our hands. Oh joy.

  82. CCCP

That was by far one of the funniest things I’ve read on here since Kaspar’s YUKON CORNELIUS scout comment!!!!!

  83. Orr….you are entitled to your opinion. (And in fact sometimes your opinion is spot on and other times quite entertaining.) I just don’t know many others who would agree with you in this case. Yes Hank shouldn’t have f-ed with that puck, but it ended up behind the net. It wasn’t like it popped in front of the net to doorstep.

Opinions are fine. If they are not based on proper analysis then you are opening yourself up to getting discredited. That’s all.

  84. he even uses big words like his hero, Renney.

    “diatribe”

I guess he’s just the most swellest coach in history.

and we’re just truculent, lugubrious, old reprobates.

  85. CCCP – stick to your day job, that was awful and not very funny, just immature.

“Every year has been worse, and i cant take much more of that crap, it ruins my whole summer, literally. ” – You always have your right hand ;o)

  86. Beer me:
If we were showcasing players, wouldn’t Prucha be in the lineup? This reeks of Renney ala Isbister on the 1st line.

  87. “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.”

-Abe Lincoln on scouting Aaron Voros

  88. doodie – I’m an insurance man(underwriter). It’s kinda like watching paint dry, but it’s a decent living! The stuff I read all day is like a Tom Renney interview ;) LOL

    “Opinions are fine.”

Opinions are also like @ssholes. Everybody’s got one.

  89. Someone just asked Mike F. from WFAN why they can’t get Sather on and he said Sather hates him. If someone on this called, I thank you for the entertainment. Love the guy for calling for Sather’s head.

  90. dm – 12:52 from previous thread

we have arb rights with staal that yr. just like with henrik where we exercised those rights, but eventually settled on a short term deal. so noone is going to poach staal in 2010.

by the way the newsday link in previous thread had wrong cap amts for at least the top 5 salaries of forwards and dmen

  91. Right. They’re showcasing Voros. Sure they are. Because his value continues to soar with every shift he plays.

(How do people come up with this stuff without spewing lunch all over themselves?)

  92. Doodie, you may be right about Renney not being the right guy for this team, once this season is over we’ll deal with that. But for now, he’s working with subpar talent getting decent results in a defensive system – we go 5-1-1, and now a losing streak, and I bet February will be much of the same unless Sather can find a top scorer while be handcuffed with the salaries he signed. Btw, he signed them, not Renney ;o)

  93. doodie machetto on

Isbister on the 1st line actually worked pretty well. Not for Isbister, but for the team. Jagr was producing, and it freed up Straka to center the second line.

The thing here is, Voros doesn’t do anything for the rest of the lines, and losing Callahan’s forechecking will hurt Naslund and Gomez.

  94. Someone on WFAN said in the news room there, word is that if the ship doesn’t right itself, Renney could be fired next week.

  95. rick and jane – good bios. jane roller derby huh. gotta remember to stay on your good side. is josh still 26 for the 4th yr in a row.

  96. Seriously Renny-men…why did the Rangers get a punsishment practice for if they…er….dominated???

  97. Kasper,

A caller called in and bitched that they don’t get Sather on. Mike said he had a run in with him, said he wasn’t fair to Sather and that Sather wanted nothing to do with him. Mike doesn’t have a clue about hockey. The caller said he needs to be held accountable and Mike says the owner loves him, we know that. Pretty much went no where.

Put it on now, someone in the news room who is a fan is going to give his thoughts about the Rangers, should be interesting.

  98. hey Renney, shut your trap on

    double meaning handle.

how can players drive to the net when they are told to hang back in the neutral zone? or when you shoot from the perimeter before anybody else even gets into the zone?

  99. Isbister worked on the 1st line because Jagr was having a fantastic season and putting up points no matter who he played with. I remember countless gimmes that Isbister would blow after Jags set him up.

  100. doodie machetto on

Ace, I don’t think we should wait for the end of the season. You honestly think this team is going anywhere in the playoffs? Slats has built a terrible roster. Might as well try and find a coach that can get more out of them than Renney.

    Right… and that isnt immature…

  102. Somebody wake me when Beer Me and Ace and JJP and jason and BillyDee etc. get around to explaining how a team that in training camp was instructed to hunt the puck (like the Bruins do) and forecheck relentlessly (and got off to a great start doing so) is NOW playing a trap AT HOME against the worst defensive team in the league.

Will one of you guys please address that for me?

  103. btw… Zherdev makes me want to break something everytime he shoots the puck. And hits post after post. Ever notice his head is never up when he lets one go?

  106. wd,

I can’t explain anything for you, I’m starting to think a change might be for the best, especially with 2 of the names that are available right now.

  107. Henrik gets the flu at least 2-3 times a season. Can the organization please get him vaccinated against influenza?

  108. Beer Me

He had 6 sog last game, i swear 4 hit lehtonin right in the logo. You’d think he’s start shooting low.. try to create a rebound after a while.

I did think he was our best player. first time i saw a serious sense of urgency in his stride. he was often first to the puck, and won the 1-on-1 battles when he wasn’t

  109. beer me,
someone once asked Mike Bossy why he never looks at the net when he shoots. Bossy’s answer, the net doesn’t move.

  110. wd40

I’ll handle that one! Injuries! You can’t lose Brodeur and White and Rolston and Holik and expect to play the exact same syst —– oh, sorry. Wrong team.

You can’t lose Lucic and Bergeron and Fernandez and Ference and —– oh, sorry. Wrong team.

  111. I can’t find the exact date (but it was well over two months ago) I said you need to put Gomez with Voros…

Please tell me someone remembers this- and think what you will about Voros- the point is you have a speedy guy around the exterior and a guy in front of the net and you force the D to make choices…

  112. “Somebody wake me when Beer Me and Ace and JJP and jason and BillyDee etc. get around to explaining how a team that in training camp was instructed to hunt the puck (like the Bruins do) and forecheck relentlessly (and got off to a great start doing so) is NOW playing a trap AT HOME against the worst defensive team in the league.

This whole Voros on the 1st line thing is giving me hope that I might actually play in the NHL someday.

That might be the post of the year so far.

  114. …also not making the trip Tom Renney…

just kidding…I like him, but you can’t scratch Prucha like this- all he does is try hard and score and is no defensive liability….this is ridiculous…

  115. “Thats easy. Renney took one look at the players Sather got him and said “Ya know what….I change my mind….” ;o)’

yes!!! Never mind we are 10 wins and three losses!! screw it!! it cant work….let me start benching the wrong guys…yea…thats the ticket

  116. Bye-bye for now Beer Me. While you’re away, please give some thought to the question I posed you at 4:06pm.

    jason

I appreciate the character your response shows. Bravo.

  117. sorry I cannot read all the previous posts but g-d really Voros gets rewarded for what????

THis is on the verge of insanity..
Prucha sits again 21 games played, what a friggin JOKE>

  118. Kaspar, I think I rememeber you on the Ranger Fan Central, was that you? You were just as annoying and unfunny….

Who’s benching the wrong guys? The only guy who shouldve never been benched was Korpikoski. Prucha hits and he hustles and he doesnt dissrupt anyone doing these things thats why he’s not in the lineup. At the very least, the other players are not easy to play against. Prucha has a great desire to compete but he’s just not gonna deter anyone and if he can’t score consistently he’s gonna find himself in the stands, just how it works.

  119. 10-2-1 start we looked faster than our opponents didnt we? Thats cause we were. Most of our players showed up for camp early and most were in great shape, guys like Mara the best shape of his career.

After that first month other teams started getting their legs, no? Thats when we staretd playing a little above .500 no? Conincidence?

  120. Ace: What’s your reasoning for Renney giving Prucha minimal power play time? (And I use minimal loosely because it’s almost non-existent)

  121. My roomate was listening to the michael kay show and they were discussing nyr. supposedly renney didnt like shanny and thats why shanny isnt here. sather wanted him, but renney didnt.

  122. Ace, I see your point but disagree. The reason we say this team is made up of 2nd and 3rd liners is because that’s how everyone is playing. Dubinsky, instead of flourishing like Setoguchi, is floundering. Dawes, a promising set-up man with a good shot, is not having a good year. Callahan plays with heart and fervor (does anyone else see the similarities to Graves?), and has shown that he knows how to finish, but has nobody to feed him. Drury has been streaky. Naslund has been just OK. Rozy went from atrocious to acceptable. Mara has played well and Staal has been steady. Redden has been awful, and seems to be dragging Girardi’s game down with his. Kalinin…nevermind. Prucha couldn’t assure a spot in the lineup with a hat trick a night, and Voros is a penalty machine.

If all the players on SJ were playing like Cheechoo, then they would be in the same situation we’re in. We too have one of the best passers in the game with Gomez. The most clutch player in Drury. An all-star backliner in Redden. We have promising youth in Dubinsky, Staal, Callahan, Dawes, Korpo… but EVERYONE is playing below their ability.

  123. “At the very least, the other players are not easy to play against.”

Yeah, Dawes took Lucic apart! Tore him a new one just with his glare! And Voros! The upper body strength! The conditioning! That guy can skate for eleven whole seconds without getting winded!

Ace, I’m taking you on the road; in a few weeks you’ll be headlining at the Luxor in Las Vegas.

  124. “After that first month other teams started getting their legs, no? Thats when we staretd playing a little above .500 no? Conincidence?”

Rodney Dangerfield! Lenny Bruce! George EFFING Carlin cannot touch this stuff!

  125. Ace @4:23

That’s a very low percentage answer. I’d say 8% correct, maybe. It’s a bit close minded to truthfuly believe that we were faster than everyone because we worked out in the offseason. Yes we had the Europe trip Magnavox metaltusks or whatever, but I think that other teams workout, and other players come into camps in the best shape of their careers.

  126. Wait a second. The other teams got their legs? And caught up to the Rangers? So Renney had to change the tactics that got them to 10-2-1? Is that what I just read??

This is not a fair fight. Get someone serious in here for argue for Renney.

  127. Joe, everyone is playing below their ability but meanwhile we have a winning record.

I seriously feel for you guys, it must suck having to watch this season if you dont like the coach and his system.

  128. Ace

Take those 8 SO wins away – what kind of record do the Rangers have. And you say “we” you play for the team?

  129. doodie machetto on

No you silly flounder, our team was training togther for weeks before camp. Not all but the najority of the guys. Thats called a headstart and thats exactly what our record shows.

  131. Ace, it does suck having to watch this season if you don’t like the coach and his system. It truly does. And if you knew more about hockey than you do, it would suck for you too.

  132. Loved the game against ATL, we just can’t finish, we have no pure goalscorers. Zman is closest but still a playmaker first.

wd40 – Renney didn’t fully start to use the 1-2-2 until we were losing, not when we were 10-2.

  133. Ace!

  137. I am writing in hope that you read this Rick. Sam reported in a post earlier in the season that Prucha doesnt read the blog or any news about himself. I am asking you that the next time you see Petr to let him know that he has the support of the readers of this blog, and from ranger fans as a whole. I know the garden chants his name when he gets in, I was at the islanders game when that started and am proud to say that it was my section, including myself in my Prucha jersey that started those chants. Anyway, confidence is huge to a hockey players game, and Renney’s coaching style/ unexplained hatred for Prucha must be hurting his confidence. So if you are anyone one else who has access to the team, can let him know the countless posts from fans demanding that Pru gets in, Im sure it would mean a lot. On another slightly less serious note, feel free to tell Redden hes an over paid bum, renney and sather that they are idiots, and feel free to rework our powerplay.

  138. “Loved the game against ATL.”

Wow. No way to bridge that gap. My turn to feel sorry for you now.

  139. well doodie, I guess i was till on a high from the Graves ceremony.

But also, we got 40 shots and had about 7 chances that were not buried – that to me is the players. Like I said about Dubi missing that chance in front, we just don’t have finishers.

  140. Ace, board games don’t count.

It is obvious you have never played this game. It is written all over you.

  141. “I am writing in hope that you read this Rick. Sam reported in a post earlier in the season that Prucha doesnt read the blog or any news about himself. If I were Petr i’d feel real happy to have this support, no doubt.

But you guys are wrong. Petr puck is just not that guy from his first season. I love the kid, had a few drinks with him over the years, but he’s not been anything like that first year player since and that includes last year where he played in 62 games.

  142. For what its worth I second what Justin says. Carp, if you do see Prucha tell him it was great to meet him on Casino Night (last year LOL) and that he has all of our support. In fact, tell him to specifically read this blog, as we all wished he got to play QUALITY minutes on even strength and PP.

  143. Edmund, I played US Juniors in Colorado Springs & 4 year division 1 school. Believe me, dont believe me, thats up to you.

  144. “I love the kid, had a few drinks with him over the years.”

WARNING: We have now moved into an entirely new level of cyber bluster.

  145. Ace

he had an average of 6 min a game, played on the 3rd line and barely got any pp time. So he could have rode the pine for all those 62 games, it wouldnt have mattered the kid needs more ice time to play.

  146. Prucha’s role changed last year. Instead of being a 1st or 2nd liner with copious amounts of power play time, he was relegated to ~11 minutes per game as a 3rd or 4th line checker.

You think Jagr would have put up 54 if he was centered by Betts and had Hollweg on the other wing?

  147. Ace, you are so full of crap! There is no way a hockey player from Division 1 would ever “love” a game where a neutral zone trap was played by a home team against terrible opposition. Ever. EVER! There is no way.

  148. Bottom line is Petr can’t handle the puck and Renney and most coach’s in this league covet players that can play a puck possession game. The only players in this kind of system that don’t handle the puck are guys that can make a difference with their body, and again, Petr can’t do that.

With our team it also comes down to who sits if Petr is playing. NYR prefer Dawes & Korpikoski. And to a lesser extent Voros, but he’s making a case for Prucha by his awful play.

  149. CCCP, I sure home TR doesn’t sabotage the blog.

LI Joe, yeah, Josh is 26 for the fourth year in a row. Me? I’m staying 39 until the Rangers win another Cup. I still owe you one for the Anisimov scoop a couple of days ago.

Justin, the Rangers’ people — maybe not all the players — read this blog. Bet on it. I know for fact it’s printed out and distributed. … not all the comments, but the posts. So I’m sure some of them are reading the comments when they get home. Prucha must have an idea how you all feel.

  150. Edmund, I was a 3rd line Center, primarily(sign me Glen !;o), I love good defense as well as offense.

Players who played at a high level can relate to most pro games, theres always things going on that people who just view will never notice.

  151. dude that game against atlanta was one of the worst games the rangers have played in the last 10 years. it is insane that renney could say we dominated. we were 10 seconds away from being shut out by the 29th ranked defense and only tied it up b/c their captain made an inexcusable mistake. i would rather have invasive surgery then watch that game again. the devils at the pinnacle of their trap days were never that boring or lifeless

    ********************************

That is laughable to the point of absurdity. Other than Zherdev and Gomez, possibly Dubinsky no other player on the Rangers carries the puck with “authority” I use the ” ” because Gomez 9/10 times coughs up the puck 1′ in from the blue line, Zherdev dipsie-doodles and losses it or someone stands him up on the blue line and Dubi skates it in and dumps it.

Rangers are NOT a puck possesion team. When Jagr, Nylander and Straka/Sykora were on the team THEN they were a puck possession team….

  153. “Renney and most coach’s in this league covet players that can play a puck possession game.”

Which of course explains why Renney traps and dumps and changes instead of chases, which is the antithesis of a puck possession game.

Ace, with every new post you reveal volumes on how little you know. Don’t you understand you are not helping yourself here?

  154. Ace, if you were a 3rd line center, you weren’t playing Division 1 varsity for four years, you fraud. It don’t work that way. If you made the team as a freshman, you are a highly skilled player who by year two is getting major minutes.

What a joke this guy is!

  155. Ace,

You can give up on the “we had more shots” thing as to that we had out played ATL. Same thing as when we were in PIT on that NBC game, we had 12 more shots than them BUT all of those shots came from the perimeter and none really in either of those games other than the Naslund goal that came from in-front of the net. Also we continually give up odd man rushes like clockwork but we seem to never get any ourselves.

  156. “dude that game against atlanta was one of the worst games the rangers have played in the last 10 years. it is insane that renney could say we dominated. ”

Renney is taking the positives from the game, as he should he’s the coach, he encourages players when they do the right thing, they just didnt bury their chances.

And again, team possesion of the puck is the name of the game, call me what you want Edmund, keeping the puck on your teams stick is something coahces covet.

Right that is why the bagged skate and did drills all morning.

  158. Edmund – I didn’t even play until my junior year, its not easy making the team to begin with, i only had half a ride, not full scholarship. Don’t call me a joke, you’re a better person than that ;o)

Jason we covered that, you’re too late.

  159. I’m not defending the Rangers at all in bringing this up in terms of Anisimov being sent down after 1 game but the Blue Jackets sent down Filitov today. He has 3 goals in 8 games with all of the goals coming in his 1st game back from the World Juniors.

Hitchcock’s reasoning with this is that if he isn’t going to play on the 1st two lines in Columbus he’d rather him get more minutes in Syracuse instead of getting only 4-8 minutes with Columbus. I understand that reasoning, too bad we can’t get that type of response from anyone with the Rangers.

  160. “And again, team possesion of the puck is the name of the game, call me what you want Edmund, keeping the puck on your teams stick is something coahces covet.”

let me try this again, and I’ll say it slowwwwwly:

Do you understand that “team possession of the puck” is the the absolute opposite of what a Renney trap which you “loved” the other night is created to produce?

  161. FYI, the bag skate was a result of the way they were practicing, not the way they played the night before. … He basically got agitated over the lack of focus at practice, so he took away the pucks and made them skate and skate. Usually somebody pukes by the end of one of those skates.

  162. Mako – Renney had the guys do those drills after 390 minutes of unispired PRACTICE – this was punishment for being nonchalant during the practice, not the game. You need any other facts you let me know ;o)

Edmund, when the system works it keeps the puck away from the opposition. That is still called puck possession, not just one player skating around with the puck. Its a team game ;o)

  163. hey Renney, shut your trap on

I believe he was a 3rd line center at a div 1 school.

on the pickup basketball team !

  164. This is sort of sad. A guy who’s played at any level ought to know the difference between puck possession and a neutral zone trap, no?

  165. catching up on my graves reading. this was one of the questions

    http://iamaranger.rangers.nhl.com/topic/160269/t/Taking-Your-Questions-at-1-p-m.html

Who are your favorite present Rangers to watch. Anyone remind you of you?

    RESPONSE:
One of my favorite players is Petr Prucha and that’s simply because of how hard he plays in all three zones. He blocks shots and hits guys bigger than him. But I could talk about every player on this team. Henrik is the best goalie in the entire league, in my opinion. He gives you a chance to win every night. As the season goes on, he gets stronger. As far as the young guys, Staal, Callahan, Dubinsky and Girardi are all making substantial impacts now. Also, the leadership of Chris Drury, and in Scott Gomez, coming off an injury, getting stronger and stronger is great to see. There’s something in every guy’s game, and that’s why the team has had success. But there will be bumps in the road in an 82-game season. If you sat there at the beginning of this season and said the Rangers would be 12 games over .500 at the end of January, you’d be very happy. But there are some tough teams out there and you never have an easy night. But I really like the speed and mixture of youth and veterans on this Rangers team. Especially seeing guys like Dawes and Callahan coming into their own

  166. “Will one of you guys please address that for me?”

    —-

Tuesday was a boring, unenergetic game. Oh well. I said it before, I’m not going to throw in the towel until the season and playoffs are over, then I’ll reevaluate. I still think the problem is more the players playing like garbage then coaching. Detroit managed to win only four out of fourteen last February with only 23 goals over that span. So its possible to go on a long losing streak and still come back in the playoffs.

  167. Any of you want to put your money where your mouth is?

I’ll be at chelsea piers tomorrow at the noontime open hockey, any takers??

  168. carp adam made you famous from previoius link

wow, i have too many questions haha, well if you get a chance… how tough was it dealing with the media frenzy in new york especially during the playoffs and is the media in new york the toughest in the league?

    RESPONSE

You ask different players around the league, and they will tell you that from the Canadian cities to San Jose or Florida, you have different numbers of media that follow the games on a regular basis. But when you talk about media, but that is extended to people that you respect. I respected guys like John Dellapina and Larry Brooks and Rick Carpiniello. You got to be their friend, but you also understood that they have a job to do. So you try to be as honest as you can. I think the coverage in New York is fantastic

  169. “Edmund, when the system works it keeps the puck away from the opposition.”

Completely wrong. Astonishingly wrong. A neutral zone trap is designed for the opposition to maintain possession of the puck for the majority of the hockey game —— at its heart is the principle of creating turnovers at center ice, which spring counter-attacks that are quick and hit-or-miss, whereupon the trapping team readopts its stance in the neutral zone and waits/presses again for a breakdown.

This is the ANTITHESIS of “team puck possession” that coaches like Herb Brooks championed.

Ace, you do not know what you are talking about.

  170. Voice of Reason on

The team was 3-1-1 without Voros in the lineup, are winless in their last 3 with him the lineup, so it’s obviously the time to promote him.

Renney is bright man, a nice man, but a man that can’t put line combinations together.

  171. “ANOTHER UPDATE:

While we were off doing the video chat, Renney was reportedly skating the Rangers into the ground (for all you who want him to be a little ticked off, we hear he was).

Jane’s going to practice today, to see if Renney’s “bag skate”—he took away the pucks and made them do sprints for half an hour—had any effect. She’ll post from Greenburgh. ”

    *****************************

I didnt get anywhere that it was because of the “lack luster practice” from either of these posts, sorry if I missed it somewhere in any where in the 600 + posts of those combinded two blogs from you. Thought it was from the game… LOL

    My sincerest apologies…

  172. ford, great post at 5:52. What a pitiful case, when you claim to be a player at a high level and you don’t know the first thing about how the game is organized.

  173. The offer is open ended, I work exactly 5 minutes away from chelsea pier and play the open skates every week. Come on, it’ll be fun, we can talk about how you guys doubted me ;o)

  174. Ace! can’t make it, I’m having drinks with your boy Prucha then! Actually I live too far away to even think about taking you up on your offer. But can you post your college stats here? Shouldn’t be too hard to get them from your old SID.

  175. Here are mine:

    2002 World Global Champions
    Games 48 Goals 142 Assists 256 Points 11 billion

it was pretty easy for me cause we played an up-tempo trapping top-secret conditioning game.

  176. i just noticed renney used the word synergy in that comment about line combos. Carp, how do you guys not laugh at this guy when he says something like that? I mean someone call him out on this directly. Does he think people are impressed or respect his opinion b/c he uses buzz words. I for one don’t think this guy is smart at all, no one with half a brain would think voros deserves top line minutes or that the team was dominant against atlanta.

and i don’t buy the whole showcasing argument. voros played in the west last year, those teams know what he can do (which is nothing) and voros may have played on the top line with gaborik last year for some games, but if he was so great and lemaire loved him so much why wasnt he resigned?

love the graves comments on prucha, but hey what does graves know right?

  177. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

I can’t even begin to comment on what Renney said today.I’m home now from work and am trying to relax.I will however say that Renney is indeed a brilliant man.He is the only sports personality in New York who’s been able to disarm one of the most ruthless press cores in the world with his slick gift to gab.

Ace-admit it,you are an intern with the Rangers P.R. department and have been dispatched to the blogoshpere to temper some of the frustration that is coming from the fans on this and other blogs.Because you certainly have no clue about hockey tactics and strategy.

  178. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

Pete- what Carp did not relay, was that in that comment he actually said he was looking for “cantankerous Synergy quite honestly”

  179. EDMUND

ace is gone with the wind… i guess he went practicing his skating since you decided to take him on the offer

  180. oh someone posted it above, graves mentioned prucha first when asked which rangers he likes to watch. b/c he gave max effort in every zone and was not afraid to hit bigger guys.

  181. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

Guys go to this blog and read the “inside the lockeroom ” entry posted yesturday.I’m having trouble linking it.It’s pretty funny, but could easily be very acurate.

    Rangerreporter.wordpress.com

  182. LI Joe. did Graves really say that about me and Dellapina? Where did you read that? Just curious.

No, the New York press corps isn’t neary as tough as its rep. Yeah, they’ll bash a guy on his way out of town, or after he’s left town, like Mangini or Torre. But when they’re here, nothing. And in hockey terms, the Rangers beat isn’t nearly as tough as the Canadian cities’ beats. Well, I should re-phrase that. Most Canadian cities. In others they’re practically on the payroll. But there are also press corps much softer than the one that covers the Rangers across the US.

And, ps, it was Jane who posted from practice today with the Renney quotes, not me. She’s just the messenger, but the point is, she worked and I didn’t.

And just to jump into the whole puck-possession/sit-back trap argument, they are totally different. Very few teams play the puck-possesion game today, honestly — although I haven’t been glued in enough to tell you which do and don’t. But those who play a trap or a lock of some sort counter attack to varying degrees. The last two Rangers games I’ve seen (I was kind of casually observing before I took over the blog from Sam last week) the Rangers have been excessively passive and haven’t countered well at all. And when they have, it’s been Colton Orr and Blair Betts countering.

So, to sum up my feeling, it wasn’t horrible in Boston, where you’re playing a better team on the road. It was probably a little better than it looked Tuesday vs. Atlanta, but it was boring as heck and needs to be a bit more aggressive. I honestly don’t think the Rangers have the skill level to attack-attack-attack, so it has to be boring to a degree. Plus they HAVE TO score on the power play. Or it’s going to be 1-0 , 2-1 every night.

  183. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

    Carp-

Sorry I don’t buy trhe argument that the Rangers can’t play an attacking agressive forcheck style. The few times when they actually dominated was when they played that way.Just look at the second half of the game against the sharks,The third period of the Bruins game, opening night against the Blackhawks and the dozen or so games that followed. One of the luxuries you have when your goalie is of the caliber that Lundquist is is to take some more chances with the forecheck and if you get burned once in a while,so be it.I think that with the exception of Staal, the rest of the team is playing way way below their ability.

  184. Doodie,
Your disrespect for Lundqvist is kinda ridiculous. He hasn’t given much to work with and he made this an AWESOME team for the first 35 games. You can’t blame him when the defense lets Malkin and Sykora on a two-on-0 and then gives Crosby a penalty shot! Come on, Doodie! Also you spoke about the year of the Olympics saying Jagr was physically hurt and Lundqvist was mentally hurt… actually Lundqvist was physically hurt and had hip surgery 2 weeks after the playoffs ended for him.

Doodie, as to your recollection that “The Rangers didn’t start winning when they first aquired Avery…it was when Ward was traded.” I’m gonna call your bluff on that one because the Rangers went 4-0-1 the first 5 games Avery played as a Ranger after having lost the previous 3 games without Avery!!! hahaha. Try again bro.

I’m not saying Tippett, Modano, Turco and Avery were ever meant to be, he probably hurt that team because of the chemistry. BUT, one of the few things Tom Renney did write was manage Sean Avery the way he did. The Rangers became WINNERS the day they aquired avery… literally losing streak turned winning streak.

    *Try again, Doodie.*

  185. “the first 35 games he made this an awesome team” … meaning there were few nights they had to actually play defense for him (because he stopped everything) and 2 goals would get them a win or a shootout… which he won.

  186. alex, that’s fine. I don’t claim to know it all, especially one week into my blog-ship. I certainly could be wrong, and a lot of you guys have been watching a lot more closely than I have this season.

that’s just my opinion, and as they say about opinions …

I agree a lot of guys are playing below their abilities (at least two key guys up front, and one on D). I also think (again, my opinion) some are very, very limited with what they can contribute offensively.

  187. QUESTION FOR JANE:

Just curious. I know Renney put them through a brutal skating workout, any info on who pushed the pace and who really struggled? As fans we see 45 seconds of effort at a time, I’m wondering who practices the hardest, who’s actually in the best shape, who’s the slowest etc.

    Thanks!

  188. “Doodie,

Dude, what disrespect for Lundqvist? I was giving him all of the credit for the team’s turnarounds over the past 2 seasons. I think he’s the best goaltender that has worn the Rangers sweater in my lifetime (and before that the comparisons wouldn’t be fair). I said mental breakdown, referencing his migraines that he was suffering at the end of the 05-06 season and into those playoffs, which are technically a physical problem, but they affected his ability to focus. Therefore, I considered it to be a mental breakdown as opposed to a physical one.

As for the team going 4-0-1 in Avery’s first five games, they actually went 3-1-1. Then they went 1-2-1 until Aaron Ward was traded. 4-3-2 (.555%) isn’t exactly a turnaround. The team’s record without Ward: 13-4-3 (.725%). With Avery (excluding Ward) 17-7-5 (.673%). Looks like ditching Ward was the bigger cog than Avery!

Truth is it was the goaltending. Over the 29 games that Avery was on the team, the Rangers gave up more than 2 goals 6 times, and they lost all six games. Two of those occassions, Valliquette was in net. Hank giving up more than 2 goals 4 times in 26 games is what turned the team around. Not Avery. Not adding Mara or subtracting Ward either while I’m at it.

Just like in Dallas. The subtraction of Avery didn’t turn the team around. Marty Turco remembering how to play goaltender did.

In case you want to check it out for yourself, the 2006-2007 schedule is linked to my name. Avery’s first game was February 6, a 3-2 SO loss to NJ (don’t confuse it with the Feb 22 3-2 SO loss to NJ). The team’s first game without Ward was the 4-0 win against Montreal on February 27. Next time check your facts first.

BTW, team record with Avery and not Mara: 5-3-2 (.600%). With Mara: 12-4-3 (.710%). Avery still loses.

  189. You know what’s crazy. Im watching the NYI/FLA game and its more entertaining than the ATL game was. I wish the Rangers would play like the did the DET game, 3rd pd SJ game.

  190. Steve Somers on WFAN tonight asking how Art Howe managed to sneak himself in and become coach of the Rangers.

Renney lovers, ye days are numbered. Enjoy them while they last. Voros on the first line with Gomez and Naslund is somehow a solution to anything? Put the worst skater on the team on a line with the two best? Not just desparation but fear. And stupidity. The team desparately needs goals. let’s continue to worry about defense.

    The man is done.

  191. Jeffluke,
I wasn’t out there for the puckless practice on Wednesday, I just went out today, or I’d have some more information on that. I asked Naslund about it though and he said that the players on the team want to win just as much as the coaching staff.

Thought that was interesting. It’s a little early for me to read into that, so I’ll leave it there.

  192. In the game that Gaborik scored five times against the Rangers three were at even strength, one unassisted. Voros got assists on the other two. He also fought Strudwick that night.

The moral of the story is that he might do well at times on the first line if that first line includes Gaborik.

  193. idov
That’s a really good point, the counterpoint being, as I see it, that he really does not help much on this team. If Betts was put on the same line as a healthy Gaborik in Minnesota, I bet he would have some multi-point games too. But would either of them do it if they were on NYR, that’s the real question.

  194. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

    Carp-

I meant no disrespect.I was just expressing my opinion also.As for what some guys can and can’t contribute offensivly, the point I was trying to make is that Renney cannot get players to perform to their abilities which is a sign of a good coach. In fact,my contention is that most of the players on the team have regressed dramatically since coming here.

  195. Peter

As I said earlier, it is like a horrible Commie-scare movie from the 50s, only here Renney isn’t a Soviet implanted to destroy the USA but rather a spy from the Flyers or the Devils or the Islanders bent on ruining the Rangers.

If Renney is playing Voros there under orders from Sather, he is deserving of zero respect. If he’s playing Voros there because he thinks Voros is an NHL-calibre player, he ought to be fired on the spot for blindness and stupidity.

  196. where do I sign Carp. Even if Gaborik never plays a game for us and leaves via free agency that trade would be worth it. It’s addition by subtraction.

  197. Jane

There is clearly tension between the players and the coach. Just too many quotes after games in the past few weeks that not so subtly point to a wish to play an attacking game BEFORE they fall behind!

  198. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

    Carp-

I forgot to mention this but I heard on Wfan radio today at about 4pm Rich Ackerman who does the 20/20 updates and is a rangers fan said in response to a really angry caller that he heard from his Rangers sources that Renney may be fired as early as next week wich might explain his running the toughest practice he’s had since he’s been coach.I think this is predicated on how the team responds the next two or three games.

  199. The 5 goal Game (and 1 assist) by Gaborik happened on the night my second child was born.Dec20,3007 ,,,,, Wifey and I figured it would only be fitting to name our new baby Girl , Gabrielle, aka Gabby just because of this incredible display of hockey that night by both Gabbys. I am banking on Gabby to become a NY Ranger before my lil Gabby turns 2 years old!

  200. alex, fair enough. especially Gomez and Drury and Redden?? You don’t ever have to worry about disagreeing with me. OK?

I heard that Ackerman thing, too. I don’t buy it at all because nobody knows what Sather might do. Unless somebody sees John Tortorella or another coach coming out of Sather’s office, I don’t believe any rumors. Plus it’s hard to get fired in Dolan’s Garden. I don’t think this little slump of a team in a playoff position is going to do it.

I also heard Francesa say he thought the Rangers were having a good season.

    Rob L, you’re right.

  201. I never thought to post on this blog (thinking I’d only add +1 to all of the armchair Ovechkins on here) but I have to say…please don’t link this blog to baseball.

  202. Carpy,,,,,in your opinion, what type of atmosphere exists within the NY Rangers locker room right now ?

Do you feel that the younger players feel a little bit of envy and possibly anger/resentment since the high paid guns are not leading the team to a consistent well executed game plan.

  203. Carp

If this team founders in Dallas and NJ, the prospect of missing the playoffs becomes real. And believe me, if the heat from people like Somers on the FAN continues to rise at Renney and starts to get close at all to Sather, Glennie will fire his coach in a heartbeat.

Sather has many cards to play before he admits failure on his UFA signings, and he will play all of them before he accepts even a fraction of the blame.

  204. liquid – you’re 2nd paragraph would be more appropriate if you changed the high paid guns to the clueless coach and his assts

  205. Sather is blessed in the sense that so many players are poor seasons, so he can point to the coach no longer having effectiveness, and point to these guys having been AllStars elsewhere, “they didn’t forget how to play when they came here, blah blah bla…”

All self-serving crapola in one respect, because Sather wants to escape responsibility for his role. But sadly for Tom Milquetoast, he is such a frightened guy, so natively conservative in his approach to the game, so incapable of letting his players play, so terrified of playing to win at all that he will have colluded with Slats in his own destruction when he goes.

  206. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

    Carp-

Fair point on the goings or lack thereof in the garden.I wouldn’t giive to much credibilty to what Francseca says on the state of the Rangers this season. His Knwledge of hockey is only rivaled by my knowledge by my knowledge of ballet!

  207. alex b (the poster formely known as czechthemout!!!!) on

    Ford-

I’m with you on almost all of your posts.
Do you agree with me that Sather sucks big time and should be canned along with Renney?

  208. alex

Yes, one hundred percent. Sather is responsible for the players on the roster, and for the money spent he has done a terrible job. Of course I want him gone.

But Renney’s failure parallels Sather’s. (This is not a zero-sum game, where only one guy is at fault!) He has a team full of young, exceptional skaters who are capable of attacking and pressuring the puck like the Bruins do, but whose brains and instincts are being filled 24/7 with fear
of making a pass in the offensive zone that might not succeed!

YOU CAN’T PLAY WINNING HOCKEY when you are thinking about something other than scoring goals when you have the puck in the offensive zone! And sadly that is what is at the heart of Renney’s philosophy: Focused on what can go wrong rather than what can go right. Coaches who think like that not only don’t win Cups —– they don’t even get close to Cups.

  209. alex, Francesa may not know hockey, but he does know a lot of hockey people. So if he hears things, he isn’t just talking out of his ass.

  210. IDOV

Exactly. If Gabby stays healthy he can be great. Gomez, healthy, just flat out sucks. He wont do as good. Im hoping he does, but i just cant see it. I don’t get why Pruchs cant play on the 1st line for more than half a god damn game. Im not saying he’d pop a couple in the net, but it’s just unfair, he busts his ass non stop to try and impress the coach enough to leave him in the lineup, let alone getting more ice time.

    LIQUID

Nice story, and you’re probably right, we’ll get Gabby before she’s two. Then he’ll probably play 20 games for the rest of his time as a Ranger.

  211. ford, I agree with you totally that there may soon come a day when co-conspirator Sather will look over at co-conspirator Renney and throw him to the wolves (deservedly!) in order to deflect blame and attention from himself.

  212. I’m not the only one venting. Get on board Margaret, thev train is pulling out of the station and you are stillon the platform.

    Venting Out Frustration
    February 5, 2009

For those of you that are mad about the Rangers, and have no way to vent their frustration, pass this post along and hope it gets to Renney.

I know I joked about it yesterday but my frustration has officially boiled over. I have been able to tolerate the media, swallowing every work Renney says and leaving it as it; but not anymore. Yesterday Renney turned a normal practice into an all out, jaw dropping, puke inspiring practice in which he drove the Rangers for thirty minutes of puck less sprints. Reports have come from all over that punishment for bad games isn’t exactly Renney’s “thing”, but that they are glad he is doing it. Why, oh why, does no one in the media call him out on the fact that this should have happened three months ago! Who cares that Tom Renney gave a punishment skate? Its way too little way too late. In the past nine games the Rangers have scored 17 goals, that’s just under two goals a game. In that time span the Rangers are 4-3-2, and have lost all of their last three (0-2-1).

So why the wasted time Tom, when exactly did you decide that you might have lost your team? These are things good, even mediocre, coaches realize in November; not February when you punish your players for their play but refuse to punish yourself for yours. Has it ever occurred to Renney that his system might not be working? That maybe, just maybe, they aren’t scoring because he changes the lines at least three times a game. Maybe it’s because he has no idea how to split up ice time. Why on earth was Sjostrom leading the Rangers in ice time through the first two periods against Atlanta? No, you did read that correctly Sjostrom lead the Rangers in ice time through the first two periods. Then he played two of seven shifts in overtime, while Zherdev and Dubinsky played just one.

We can also shed light on his refusal to play the likes of Petr Prucha, even though all Petr does is bring heart and hustle onto the ice. What’s worse than Renney inability to play Prucha? The fact that he replaces Prucha with Voros who does only one thing right and that’s take penalties. What’s even more infuriating is that Renney puts that idiot on skates on the power play. THE POWER PLAY! I understand that he did well in the beginning of the year, and I even endorsed him being on the power play in October. But it has not been working since then and Renney continues to be oblivious and try to put a square peg in a round hole. Why is Larry Brooks the only one who calls Renney out on this? Does no one else see it? Reporters obviously cant infuse the venom I’m currently infusing in my blog but they can do it professionally.

Now I can’t exactly blame Renney for everything. If there is a bigger moron than Renney it’s that blundering idiot Sather, whom I assume is intoxicated during player negotiations because that’s the only way any human can justify some of the contracts he offers. He gave 6 years 39.5 million dollars a year for Redden, who was supposed to be our power play quarterback and our crease clearing defenseman? His two goals and 15 assists while sporting a nice -8 really shows that hes worth that kind of money. Newsday’s Steve Zippay politely refers to the signing as a “miscalculation” I refer to it as a drunken mistake. Sather has handcuffed this team for the next 5 years and Dolan just sits in the owner’s box and chuckles because he doesn’t care. The problem starts from the top and until Sather is fired or does his job and fires Renney this team is going to go nowhere.

There … Rants done and I do feel a little better. Maybe as March 4th comes along we can all feel better as well.

    http://rangerreporter.wordpress.com/

  213. Ranger game is listed on espn Streak for the cash.
I have 9 game streak but i don’t care……Taking dallas to win LOL!

  214. Why do you guys want Gaborik? The guy is like the Ben Sheets of the NHL; he’s an amazing player for the 10 games he plays but he can’t stay healthy. I’d only sign him for one year $3 million tops which he won’t do. He’s not worth it.

  215. Dang, I’m going to the game tomorrow, and Prucha is my favorite player. I was hoping to see him and some of my other favorites, but it just so happens half of them might now be playing.

Does anyone know why exactly Renney is keeping Voros in the lineup? I find it…..useless. He claims its for his size, but he doesn’t use it, and Prucha hits more than him anyway. I just don’t understand it.

  216. I don’t even think it’s so much the trap or performances by 6plus mill layersas much as it is the triangle they do when they get in the offensive zone

  217. zZzZ 13 ZzZz rules!! .....says Greg L. on

Blog full or idiots I see …Voros gets the promotion , maybe he might score cuz noone eles can.

  218. Once Gaborik’s right hip is repaired the way his left one was (vice versa?), he could be a very healthy guy. I guess it depends, but the rumour was that both hips needed the same operation, but he was being shopped before all the necessary work was done. A bit of controversy there. Maybe there is more to it, but I still think he could be a surprise but it would require that a team is willing to gamble.

  219. Aaron Ward won the stanley cup in carolina, and now,he’s on the top team in the league.

so, he has had success everywhere, including Det, EXCEPT NYR

that tells me it was not Ward at all

  220. Looks like the Coyotes will have to move. they are losing $45 mill per season, and no one wants them after looking at the books

    ————————————————–

From David Shoalts at the Globe & Mail:

Gary Bettman struck out at least three times in attempts to peddle the Phoenix Coyotes, according to multiple sources.

The sources say the NHL commissioner was turned down by Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, by Phoenix Suns majority owner Robert Sarver and by Ken Kendrick, the managing general partner of the Arizona Diamondbacks, on separate occasions. All three were said to have backed out after looking at the books of the Coyotes, who are expected to lose as much as $45-million (all currency U.S.) this season.

“It’s not happening,” a source close to Reinsdorf said yesterday. “They’re begging him to do it, but there’s no way. He has no interest. Who would?”

Reinsdorf, Sarver and Kendrick could not be reached for comment. Bill Daly, the deputy commissioner of the NHL, declined to comment.

hahahahahahahahahaha voros naslund and gomez on a line? thats a disaster waiting to happen. Seriously what is trapping tom doing to this team hes making them worse than they already are.

  222. As an alternative opinion, Voros could just be the decoy player to create space for the other 2. If Gomez carries the puck in, Voros goes to the net and Naslund snipes around the circles/slot area it could be a line that works. Of course there is the problem that Voros seems to have forgotten where the net is since late November – can we fit Turco with a flashing light on his helmet to help guide Voros to where he should be?

  223. If it turns out Slats can bring back Avery, I don’t have too much of a problem with it.

It shows that slats knows he didn’t have the right personel on the roster. Although, any player movement kinda tells you that. Nothing wrong with the process of constantly wanting to improve your team.

3yrs, at about $2.2mil/per was the appropriate contract was for him in the first place. I never had a problem with that kind of deal.

    Adds much needed grit.

I just hope that the NHL’s “Behavioral Modification Program” has a lasting effect. The “Avery Rule” penatly was humorous as it was occuring, but in retrospect, it’s embarassing.

I just hope slats knows he should be in the drivers seat on this one. If anything more than Prucha goes to Dallas(or an AHL “equivalent”), it’s too much.

Biggest positive (for me) is that my wife and I have tix for a HTFD game on 2/14. Good chance he could be there.

  224. Clarification on: “If anything more than Prucha goes to Dallas(or an AHL “equivalent”), it’s too much.”

Meant: To clear salary space…and it doesn’t have to be “to Dallas”. It’s early, sorry.

  225. haha…earlier than I thought. $1.9/per is even better. I didn’t read that link bklyn…just heard it on the radio this a.m. (thanks)

  226. We don’t have to send Dallas anything – we could be doing them a favour by picking him up on re-entry waivers as it clears them of half his contract. If they’d bought him out they would have to pay 2/3 the value of the contract.

I’m not against getting him back, but isn’t 3 and a bit seasons a bit of a risk. I think most of us on the blog agreed that 2 years at $2.5-3m he would have been worth a shot last summer. I suppose if we are paying less than $2m for him thats a good deal, if he is a good team-mate and an annoying opponent…lets hope the team accepts him back if it happens.

  227. I just don’t understand how everyone can see the problems the Rangers have except managment. Is it a refusal to do anything? Why won’t Renney at lease change his system? Why won’t he just play Prucha to at least get his trade value up?

  228. 0necupin67years on

    desperate times

    desperate move Avery

leave him be , he’ll do something stupid to cost the rangers

  229. My brother called me this AM about the potential Avery thing. He said this, “The team hates him. Everyone hates him.”

To that I said, “F the players who don’t like him. If they didn’t want him there, they should play a little better and not have necessitated a move like this.”

In any case, someone educate me on the difference between a potential move like this and when we got Jagr from Washington, in terms of who pays how much of his salary? The guy I sit next to here said we would be split Avery’s $ this year with Dallas and then be on the hoook for the next 3 years. Is that right?

  230. Let them send the whole team to Dallas. Do we really have anyone that’s worth holding on to save for Dubinsky, Staal and Hank… and maybe Paul Mara?

    I’d argue not.

We need Avery and Avery needs the Rangers. We should have never let him go.

Should be a non-factor that he doesn’t get along with the back-up goalie.

  231. Jagr’s deal was pre-lockout, so you could trade a player and be on the hook for half the salary. That changed in the salary cap era.

The ONLY way to pay Avery 1/2 his salary is if a team acquires him on re-entry waivers.

This means Sather has to hope that Avery passes through waivers, but I’m pretty sure someone else will claim him at 1.9m/y on re-entry.

  232. Also, I think it’s outrageous when fans mention how good/bad players get along with one another as a factor for resigning or making trades.

Allegedly, this Rangers team is the tightest in its history, but you’d never know it on the ice. Not only do they not stick up for one another but they don’t lift each other up either.

Id rather a few head cases who play with emotion and drop the gloves in the locker room; at least you know they’re brining some passion with them.

  233. @New Newman

Jagr’s contract was before the new CBA. Back then the team trading a player was allowed to assume part of the salary cap hit and pay part of a players salary. That is no longer the case under the new CBA; the team acquiring the player via trade must eat the whole salary.

However, this would not be a trade, this is a waiver situation. Dallas would place Avery on waivers. If he clears, they would assign him to Hartford. The Rangers would ask Dallas to put him on re-entry waivers (in theory, calling him up from Hrtford to Dallas.) However, any team can claim a player off re-entry waivers, and so the Rangers would claim him. This way, we pay Avery half his salary and take half the cap hit, while Dallas assumes the other half, for the entire contract length.

The only way this doesnt work is if someone claims him before we do. However, waivers work based on record. So the only teams that can claim Avery before the Blueshirts are teams with worse records, and there wouldnt be much appeal for them to claim a guy like Avery.

    Hope that cleared things up.

  234. The Flyers have a worse record (if we’re talking points), and I guarantee they’d pick up Avery on re-entry.

    Remember, Holmgren is a GENIUS.

  235. Joe,

Aaron Ward is awwful. He’s just not a good player, point period.

The league is shallow with quality defenseman, especially veteran experienced players at that.

Once the 2008 draft class, which was practically all D-men, begins to mature, guys like Ward will be weeded out in a second.

I’d take Paul Mara over him any day of the week.

  236. I think other teams would be wary because its still a $1.9mm cap hit for the next 3 seasons after this. I think the term might scare people off. I also know the salary cap hit for the rest of the year is pro-rated, but the Flyers are literally up against the cap as is.

  237. “We need Avery and Avery needs the Rangers. We should have never let him go.”

Agreed. I don’t care if acquiring Avery will be the equivalent of throwing a grenade in the locker room. These guys may make a great book club but they look like crap on the ice. We need other teams to hate playing us again.

  238. Avery is ok, although he is still another 3rd line small wing — there are already a lot of those on this team. But an injection of personality might be nice. And NYR management is the one that called Avery a problem, not really the players, unlike the Stars. On the other hand, Jagr and Shanahan kept him in line — who will keep him in line on this team — Drury or Gomez? Hard to picture.
Still reeks of Sather’s desperation, not to mention Sather doesn’t like to admit he made an error. Wonder if he will actually address the media on this?

  239. Or, if the Stars make a deal with another team (knowing fully that the Rangers are the ones that will get him) to send Avery there and then the Rangers can steal him off of re entry waivers, like Columbus did with Dubliwiscz or however you spell his name.

As john davidson would say, “now it;s only a matter of “fishnagles”

  241. Thanks for clearing up the salary issue.

At the end of the day, this league is about winning games not making friends. If Avery comes here and everyone else has to step up their game because of the potential for Avery to take their spot on the team, I think it’s a win.

Now if it sends us closer to over the cap and creates another Drury-Redden-Gomer-Rosy situation where half our money is tied up in 4 guys, not sure I love the idea.

  242. BillyDeeWilliams on

Wait a second…are we really talking about Sean Avery like he’s going to save this team and help them win the Stanley Cup. He certainly didn’t win them the cup last year…or the year before for that matter.

I haven’t had time to read all the comments above, but there seemed to be a couple leaning towards that thinking.

  243. So if we pick him up for 2.2 mil/per, can we buy him out at 2/3 of the remaining salary over double the time at the 2.2, or the entire 4 million?

He definitely would be a shot in the arm for the team, but if he needs to keep his mouth shut, maybe he won’t be as effective. Then again, he’s a good hockey player, and knows how to play in the time he’s not spewing verbal filth at his opponents. We don’t really need to worry about messing up chemistry…we have none. No set lines to screw up. He may just be a rental and we could dump him after the year

  244. This team is not going to win a cup with Renney, Pearn and Pelino behind the bench, plain and simple. Bringing back Avery will at least keep us entertained.

  245. *BEER* you’re just a hypocrite, we’ve listened to you whine and moan about all the reasons Avery shouldn’t be here and then you say you wouldn’t have a problem with it…?!

Geez, even i’m concerned about having Avery here through 2012.

*Doodie* this is obviously Sather’s response to you saying Avery had nothing to do with the Rangers comebacks the past 2 seasons! haha. They started 3-0-1 the first year he got here and went 4-1-1 if you extend to the first 6 games.

Damn, doodie and beer, I don’t care that you guys are both wrong, but I love NOT being wrong (aka Right again).

Outside of major neural lesioning, I’m not sure there is a way to tame Avery. Anger management classes + Avery = Avery. Reminds me of when I was younger, leaving my parents house on new years eve:

my mom: (yelling out the window) Be safe! You’re not gonna drink to much, are you?
    Me: NOPE!

Just in case anyone missed the “Sean Avery, Evil Genius” story by ESPN, here you go..

    http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=3632996

  250. Guys what is the scoop re Avery and John Giannone that a few have alluded to? Was there a post game interview I missed?

  251. true – You’re like CCCP…you don’t pay attention. My opinion on avery has never changed.

“The Flyers have a worse record (if we’re talking points), and I guarantee they’d pick up Avery on re-entry.”

    You’re 100% right Zherv. 100%.

  252. Speaking of MSG, why did they stop the in-game trivia contest? They also stopped Inside the Rangers, and MSG,NY daily news? Budget cuts? No ratings? Hard to believe the current programming on MSG would bring in higher ratings than MSG,NY. The trivia contest at least added a little something to the games, especially when there is no scoring to speak about.

  253. Flyers would need to clear buku cap space to sign Avery even off of re-entry waivers. They have less space than we have, and they have been plagued with injuries all year. They need backline help, not forwards, especially with Briere still in the mix

  254. all things considered Ave’s a fairly good player for $1.9M…with all the BS about him he skates well, plays dee and he isnt a bumbling oof like Voros

That being said, if the Rangers are actually still ahead of some teams at the point of re-entry are we sure there isnt one team that wouldnt snap him up just to hurt the Rangers?…send him back to minors so it doesnt effect the cap…buy him out after the season??

What are, say, Carolinas options here during re-entry??

  255. Waiving Voros should leave enough cap space for Avery, shouldn’t it? If not, just dump Prucha’s salary already because there’s no way he’s going to play any time soon.

  256. I was never for Avery leaving. I like what he brought to the team, he has speed, good puck control and has a deceptively wicked wrist shot. I dont think I need to name the obvious grit he brought which is much needed.

Me thinks that if he does make the team will he call out Redden like he did Malik during practice…

  257. the rangers def need an Avery-type, but is Avery the one we want/need? (I am not totally against bringing him back.. but kinda scary w/o Shanny there to slap him around a bit)..

Dallas is one of the few teams in the NHL that the Rangers can actually use as a trade partner.. with Avery (4mil for nothing) and Brad Richards at ~$8mil per for 5 yrs.. is there anyway they would take Redden if we take richards – and work out the cap issues (using Avery)? my guess is they would do something bigger for Rsoie (but I wouldnt part with him).. Ill take Richards at C for five yrs as opposed to redeen at D for 6.

  258. Beer Me, back in the place you called a toilet yesterday? Nature calls, hunh? Guess when you gotta go, you gotta go.

Still waiting for you to explain why Renney abandoned the attacking game that he preached in training camp, that produced the fast start, that kept people awake. Was it all because of the injuries? lol

  259. No, that wasnt the whole trade proposal just the large salary pieces.. The trade would have to include other “stuff” from the rangers (i.e. some combo of prucha, Voros, dawes, youth).. I just am trying to figure out any way to get Redden off the team and/or fix the salary cap issue that the Great One (sather) has gotten us into.

  260. This is what I alluded to yesterday when I said that the Stars would have to find a place for Avery to play since they don’t have their own AHL team this season. I think Jive explained it best, but I want to emphasize that Avery will not be a part of our organization just because he is sent to Hartford. This would be a loan from the Stars, as they have done with many of their prospects this season, assigning them to play in several different organizations in the AHL. There is no guarantee, however, that we will be able to take him off of re-entry waivers. Obviously, this would make some games more exciting, but I don’t think it is worth it to have Avery here for potentially three more seasons, especially with Drury under contract for those seasons. If we try to catch him on the re-entry waivers and we are blocked by another team, that will still cause players on our team to be upset at the thought.

  261. As many have pointed out – this is not a trade. Because Dallas has no affiliation with an AHL team, he can be assigned (after clearing waivers) directly to Hartford. At that point, the Rangers just need to clear enough cap space (he’s on the books at 1.92 prorated….)

Honestly, I have been praying for this move since November. He is EXACTLY what the team needs. Forget scoring, Renney, Redden…etc for a minute. If Sean’s attitude is on par with that of last year, he will inject the life and heart this team sorely lacks. I wouldnt be surprised if others picked up their game a notch or two as a result.

And those who think Dubi and Vally have beef with Avery need to realize that we have NO idea what goes on behind closed doors, and that things can be “hugged out” for the sake of a team.

  262. “At that point, the Rangers just need to clear enough cap space (he’s on the books at 1.92 prorated….)”

What about other teams taking him?

  263. Hey, what happened to “Ass” (pronounced Ace)? Guess the question from wd40 to “provide a link re his stats” I know my college provides old stats via the internet” must have caused a bit oif anxiety. :)

  264. Spider
In a perfect world the very fact they want to claim him on re-entry waivers sends a chill up the backs of Renney and all the players…this is how desperate we are for some passion boys!!….even if someone else ultimatley takes him before our spot comes up

(What? renney will think, we cant finish strong without Avery?)

(What? Drury will think, I cant get this team motivated)

    Its win win

  265. IS this avery rumor too little too late thoguh?
I mean his grit and attitude to the ice are unquestionable, as he will bring it to every team we play.
But is he goign to give us more goals?
WE STILL have the Dman problem remember?
And where’s our 6-2 to 6-4 230 lbs winger who cant light the lamp? (Tkachuck??)
I mean if we get Avery for 1.9 prorated 3 years its a steal, but we still need another LARGE scoring Winger, and another top Dman.

Oh, and a new head coach and assistant coach, as Im so sick of Perry Pearn and his retarded power play.

And Tom Rennney!! with his Pontification of intagibles that dictate the diatribe of aforementioned offensive tactics during attacks in the neutral zone where we needs size, but not to say size is a perogative that wee need to sustainpuck possession and poise.

Tranlsated – Peter Prucha will be in the press box tonight

  267. I don’t really care about the comfort level of anyone on this team. They need a HUGE kick in the ass, and to feel a little uncomfortable. They are Pro athletes. I am sick of coddling. Tough love is the way to go here.

  268. So, we sign Voros for (a little) too much money to replace Avery’s grittiness (I didnt mind the the signing, esp after Avery left)..then waive/trade Voros to get Avery, whose contract was over-market to begin with and now is REALLY over-market given his recent issues and his being off the ice for three months .. sounds like sound Sahter-logic to me..

  269. agreed, Nasty

    just forget the Love part

Fatso is right now looking at possible first round match-ups and this is causing his head to spin.

  270. Avery finally understands that money does not bring to fame, fame comes when you play for the New York Rangers.

  271. Sometimes a tight locker room is what you don’t want. Because everyone is so friendly there is no kick in the ass when it is needed, because good buddies don’t want to hurt each others feelings. It is like a teacher going to become a principal in the same building they have always been just a teacher in. How are you going to come down hard on one of you old buddies who was your equal for so many years? You don’t. You need guys that are going to push you and make it a little uncomfortable sometimes. We don’t have that at all this year. It is missed and needed.

  272. fellas,

I don’t think anyone here is trying to argue that Avery is the answer to all of our problems by any means. Nor is he bringing the Cup with him from Dallas.

What we are saying is that he’d be a breath of fresh air on a stale team. He’ll contribute some much needed grit and personality. And, he may score a goal or two en route to pestering opponents who walk all over us night in and night out without him in the lineup.

We really have nothing to lose. Like I said before, save for Dubinsky, Staal and Hank, everyone — and I mean everyone — can go.

Even if you like Peter Prucha or Nigel Dawes, they’ve maxed out here. There’s too many of “them” or third line players. If you can upgrade a 12 goal scorer with no size and average speed who doesn’t play physical for a guy who can score 18, annoy opponents, plays a VERY physical game and resonates with the fans, I think it’s a no brainer.

We really lose nothing with Avery coming to NY and gain a whole lot of what we don’t have.

We should really just dump all these mirror image players and try to get Gaborik… injury prone or not, he’s a goal a game guy.

  273. Brandon

Listen, I would love for Gaborik to be on the team but unless we clear a TON of space for him, its just not going to be possible. He’s probably going to be looking for $6-8 million. It wouldnt surprise me if Vancouver gets him because Sundin has been a bust HAHAHAHAHHAHA

  274. Avery’s contract is still $4 mil per for 4 years.. dont we get into anoth HUGE cap issue next yr and thereafter with Z, Staal, Dubinsky etc.. FORGET trying to sign a Boumeester or other impact D-man..

  275. doodie machetto on

Dude, did you even READ my post? They went 4-3-2 in his first 9 games. Harldy a turn around. It was all Lundqvist.

Joe, my point about Ward wasn’t a knock on him, it was a knock on the “Avery theory.” True, I wasn’t much of a Ward fan, but my point was that if you want to look at the turnaround in play around that time of the season, it was more dramatic after Ward left as opposed to when Avery arrived. I pointed that out in order to illustrate that both ideas are ludicrous: It was the goaltending.

As for someone who said Voros played with Gaborik and did well, I’ve got two names for you: Marcel Hossa, Jaromir Jagr. Worked for a month, Hossa got hurt, never worked again.

It’d be great to read current players reactions to the Avery Rumour….LMAO!!

  277. Avery has 10p in 23g.. that’s .43 PPG and in this case he’d be a 1.9m cap hit

    Let’s see:

    Zherdev .79ppg ($2.5m?)
    Drury .61ppg ($7.05m)
    Gomez .77ppg ($7.35m)
    Naslund .65ppg ($4m)
    Redden .33ppg ($6.5m)
    Rozsival .49 ($5m)

    Is Avery’s contract THAT bad?

  278. doodie machetto on

Trade Redden for Avery, straight up.

Then let Avery play out his days in Hartford. We’ll clear 6 million from our books. I’d say that’s the best possible trade we can make, so long as we never recall Avery.

  279. okay read ealier post on how the rangers would get Avery and can buyout his contract if passing thru re-entry waivers…that makes it kind of unlikey that this actually happens..

  280. doodie machetto on

    “Redden .33ppg ($6.5m)
    Rozsival .49 ($5m)”

Those guys are defensemen and I don’t think it’s fair to compare their ppg. Not that I’m defending them, I just think it’s a false comparison because they aren’t expected to put up as many points as forwards.

Also, along those lines, the fact that Rozsival has a higher ppg than Avery doesn’t say much about Avery.

  281. doodie machetto on

“The trivia contest at least added a little something to the games, especially when there is no scoring to speak about.”

kc, there was trivia on Graves night. I just think they stopped keeping score.

  282. doodie:

Redden was given %6.5m/y (EIGHT MILLION this year) so he could be a PP QB and get points.

He’s not getting the points and his actual defense is subpar (same with Rozsival)… mean while you have Mike Green with 42 points in 39 games and Mark Streit with 38 points in 50 games..

That’s $11.5m WASTED! I’d rather put in inexperienced Sanguinetti and Del Zotto instead of both Redden and Rozsival.

  283. “Trade Redden for Avery, straight up.

Then let Avery play out his days in Hartford. We’ll clear 6 million from our books. I’d say that’s the best possible trade we can make, so long as we never recall Avery.

    Doodie!!
    No…recall him every March

  284. doodie machetto on

And just as I had regained respect for Larry Brooks, I’ve lost it again. He has such a mancrush on Avery that he is beyond biased.

“They won’t be either of those things once Avery comes back home again.”

Oh jesus Larry. Maybe if you’re lucky he’ll be back by next Saturday and you can ask him to be your Valentine.

  285. doodie machetto on

“Redden was given %6.5m/y (EIGHT MILLION this year) so he could be a PP QB and get points.

That’s $11.5m WASTED! I’d rather put in inexperienced Sanguinetti and Del Zotto instead of both Redden and Rozsival.”

Like I said, I wasn’t defending them. I was just pointing out that it is a false comparison to compare a defenseman’s point totals with a forwards. Mike Green is a serious Norris candidate and is leading all defensemen ins scoring. He’s at a 1.1 clip. The second best ppg among defensemen is .84 (Dan Boyle). Rozsi is the 28th ranked defender at .49. The top scorer is Malkin, who is at a about a 1.5 ppg clip. The 28th ranked scorer is Corey Perry who is at like a .92 ppg, which is higher than the 2nd highest defenseman. That’s why I am saying the comparison is false. Forwards score WAY more than defensemen and they are expected to do so.

But I will defend Rozsi a little bit. Rozsival is way more overpaid than he is bad. If he were paid like 3 million, I honeslty would like having him on the team. His game has really been turning around as the season has progressed.

Redden is not only GROSSLY overpaid, he’s just been bad. A good number for his play this season would be like 1-1.5 million.

I too would prefer Sanguinetti here instead of Redden, Kalinin, Reitz, or Potter (not Rozsival). MDZ is much too green to be thrown into the fire like that. I think the year in juniors was a good choice.

  286. doodie machetto on

    Redden for Avery, straight up.

    Never recall Avery.

    Sign Bouwmeester with Redden’s money.

Can anyone think of a better idea than that?

  287. Here’s a question, though. Would you rather have Avery on the cheap, or save that cap space to maybe (although not easily) do something else at the trade deadline? Because adding Avery to the cap makes any other trade less likely.

  288. doodie machetto on

    Carp, see above.

Don’t take Avery on waivers, dump salary for him. Dallas could use the defenseman without Zubov all season, especially now that they are back in the playoff hunt. Although, convincing them to take Redden will be very difficult. I think we’d have to send them a prospect, maybe even a pick.

This would be similar to when Lou traded Maladog to the Sharks.

  289. My question is since Sather didnt want to re-sign him at what he was asking, calling him detriment to the team, yada yada yada, he is going to have to deal with him for 3 more years?

  290. So let me get this straight… our Little League Baseball World Series Champion, natural born leader… captain clutch… our great playmaker… speedster… multiple Cup winner… our veteran Dman…one of the “top” pp specialists ( according to Sather)… our brilliant coach that brought pride and glory back to NY (and soon to be 4th playoff appearance, hopefully)… the ex-Vancouver leader and captain for 7 years (that should count for some leadership) is not enough? Well then it is time to bring on the showman once again… I guess his pre-game locker room stand up is more than enough to get this team ready for games!

Hank, we’ll have to give them more in order for them to take Redden.

Honest attempt at a trade here, considering cap constraints and everything:

Redden, Prucha, Potter, PAP, 2nd rounder for Avery and Lehtinen

  292. In my opinion, Sean Avery has more talent and is a more effective player than the following:

Chris Drury, Nigel Dawes, Aaron Voros, Colton Orr, Fredrik Sjostrom, Lauri Korpikoski, Ryan Callahan.

I see him fitting in perfectly on a line with Dubinsky and Zherdev. I think he truly makes the Rangers a deeper, more dangerous team. He will be focused, and out to prove people wrong. I strongly believe Avery is a 25-30 goal scorer when given the minutes. Here’s how the lines would look if he’s acquired (and VOROS is cut to clear up the cap space):

    Gomez – Naslund – Callahan
    Dubinsky – Zherdev – Avery
    Drury – Dawes – Prucha/Korpikoski
    Betts – Sjostrom – Orr

That, to me, is a decent hockey team. And with a hot goalie, you never know…

  293. Dallas isnt going to take 2, 3, or 4 players from us. They are playing well lately. They are making a playoff push with the guys they have. The last time they brought new blood to the locker room it was a terrible experience. I expect Dallas to be EXTREMELY hesitant to make any NHL-level changes to their team until the offseason.

  294. Aaron Ward only looks good now because he’s playing with Zdeno Chara. Do we know anyone else who looked good playing with Chara in the past? Hmmmm.

  295. Jive makes a good point. They really just want to be done with Avery and cause no more impact to their roster.

  296. my fantasy

    gomez-naslund-avery
    dubinski-zerdev-callahan
    drury-prucha-korpikoski
    betts-sjostrom-voros

yes voros over orr so it gives you 4 lines with some offense(or atleast as much allowed in rennyhockey)

Then, this summer, let Lehtinen and Kalinin walk. Resign Zherdev, see if you can make a pitch for Bouwmeester, if not, sign two capable veteran defenders (Beauchemin, Sydor, Ohlund, Komisarik).

    Defense pairings:

    Bouwmeester-Staal
    Sanguinetti-Rozsival
    Fahey-Mara

    OR

    Staal-Beauchemin
    Komisarik-Rozsival
    Sanguinett-Mara

C’mon, tell me that those both don’t look MUCH better than what we have now.

Morrow is out for a while, Zubov is gone for the season. Richards actually really helped the team down the stretch and into the playoffs last season. Almost a ppg clip for both.

So we’re giving them two roster players, two prospects and a pick for Lehtinen who is UFA at season’s end. Toss in Callahan if they want a good two-way player to replace him. Also throw in a conditional 2nd rounder if he resigns with us (which if I were in charge, and unfortunately I never will be, he wouldn’t).

Personally, I think for us, all of that is worth it just to be rid of Avery.

  299. guys, I wasn’t saying Ward is a great Dman. I was answering doodie’s post that claimed that Ward leaving was the reason for the Ranger surge, not Avery arriving.

I was seconding True Fans contention that it was Avery arriving in Feb 2 yrs ago that was the reason for the surge.

and here is the proof from Brooks column.

he Rangers were 50-23-13 with him in the lineup, 24-35-9 without him in the lineup from the beginning of 2006-07 through the end of his tenure.

    that says it all.

  300. only a fool would bring avery back. oh that’s right we have sather so it wuld be a slam dunk. have his antics for next 3 yrs that’s just beautiful.

brandon 9:20 – i would take dubinsky off the important players list too

  301. zherv – 9:27 waiver order is by reverse standings calculated by % of pts avail. in other words if flyers have 1 pt less than us but 2 games in hand we would be considered below them in the standings and would be able to claim a player before them

  302. zherv 11:22 not really a good idea to compare dmen with forwards on points. apples and oranges

  303. zherv 11:27

buyout for avery would be over 6 yrs not 8 since he would have 3 yrs left. and take the $2 mm + figure you used and divide by 2. really is 1/3 of yrly salary over twice the remaining yrs
