How good can this league be? (Updated)

Marcel Hossa had a “hat trick in the KHL All-Star Game yesterday”:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rumRSWRIQ0.

I’m going let that thought sink in for a few moments.

In other news, three outstanding individual efforts highlighted the Rangers’ win in Ottawa last night: Petr Prucha’s persisence in setting up Brandon Dubinsky’s first goal; Nikolai Zherdev’s artistry in setting up Lauri Korpikoski’s second goal (and the Korpedo’s shot wasn’t bad, either); and of course, Henrik Lundqvist  pitching his second shutout in three games.

The team is off today, but will be back on the ice tomorrow…

Update, 4:20 p.m.: It was fun while it lasted, Bobby Sanguinetti. The defenseman was sent back to Hartford after his false alarm promotion yesterday. Maybe one of these days he’ll make it past warm-ups.

  1. Nothing like shutting out a lousy team to lull the Rangers into a false sense of security. Take a day off

    Decent game last night though

  2. I agree. And had that not shit the bed against Montreal we would have had a little more reason to feel good about the last few games. Because we would have beat Isles, Shittsburgh, Montreal, got a point in Buffalo, and Ottawa. But they always find a way to leave us wondering if they have really started to turn the ship around or if they are still a very fragile team. I will be happy we got the points but I am not sold on anything yet. I do love the way Prucha has been playing and Z was very creative last night and it looks like Dubi is turning it around. I like that Orr is going to the front of the net the last few games and it has led to a goal and a few chances. They just need to play like this every night and keep the puck out of our net.

  3. I watch on center ice, so i haven’t had an opportunity to listen to Joe rip into the KHL (my buddy said he did it both of the previous 2 games). Weinman, you too huh? I hope you wrote that in jest though.

I’m happy with anyone in the world wanting to spend money to go to a hockey game. As we learned with Avery, anyone/anything that gets people to games or gets the sport in the news is good for the sport.

Obviously, their league doesn’t have the likes of Kovalchuk or Ovechkin but (Weinman, questioning you) why not discuss how Jan Marek and Pavel Brendl are leading that league in goals and points?! What does that say about the Rangers patients with developing players!!!

  4. Leetchhalloffame on

Marcel Hossa would fit right in on this year’s Rangers team. Another forward who can’t put the puck in the ocean.

  5. Sam,
Stop calling Korpikoski “Korpedo”. It sounds tacky, and puts tha “ay” in “gay”. Plus, he has one decent game and than 5 brutal ones.

  6. I disagree LeetchHOF, I think Hossa may very well be one of the kids that was a victim of Renney’s anti-offense system. The kid knew how to play when he got here, and slowly had the life sucked out of his game. Granted he didn’t produce with PHX, but he was relegated to 4th line duty like he was as a Ranger. Finally, some open ice, some good players to play with, and no Renney…magic happens.

  7. Voice of Reason on

Decent game last night…So much better without Voros in the lineup..

Maybe Renney will flip flop Prucha (RW with Gomez) and Callahan (RW with Drury) and have 4 lines that work well together…

Judging how he handles his lineup, that will take a few weeks for him to figure out

  8. I’d actually like to see 3 wingers moved….put Korpi with Gomez and Naslund….then, put Prucha with Dubi and Z….then, put callahan back with Dawes and Dreary, so he can forecheck again, since that line doesn’t have anybody who really likes to own the puck like the other 2 lines. they can dump and let Cally chase.

  9. I was at the game last night in Ottawa. Sanguinetti was wearing #42 in warm-ups. That also happens to be Anisimov’s number for Hartford. I can only hope that these two will be forced to fight over it come October.

  10. Korpikoski’s learning and trying hard and that’s good enough for me. He’s doing the right things and is developing and that’s cool and the results will come. If he develops into a 20G-20A affordable winger who you can put with a good center, that’s another success.

Some players may do well in the KHL/overseas but not in North America; Jiri Dopita for example, and that other Russian dude who came over with Larionov (forgot his name). Hossa has potential, but was inconsistent on three teams in the NHL, Marek just never wanted to come over here, and Brendl was lazy with about 4 different teams.

  11. Anisimov has worn #55 with the Rangers in preseason. I read an interview where he likes #12 and would wear it, but the Wolfpack retired that number for Gernander, hence the #42. Hopefully he can get #12 next season if he’s ready as it’s been quite a while since any Ranger has made that number respectable. (Eddie O).

  12. It’s all about circumstance you know. Hossa is a great player, during the lock out he outplayed his brother here in Sweden, and I for one thought he had the potential to be a 20-30 goalscorer. But in the end its always the circumstances and how the player copes with them that decides how the end result will take shape. Look at Prucha; how many Hossas and Zherdevs form that matter would have come out as a brute force after that kind of treatment by the coach. Prucha is no future Malkin or Bäckström, but he will have a nice, long career simply because of his conviction and belief. Hossa did’nt those kind of qualitys.

  13. Oh and what about Rosie? Born again? Has surely looked pretty good as of late. Now if we just can get Dredden off of this team, we could be a contender.

  14. Has anyone else noticed how the Rangers have been going through long stretches without taking penalties? No penalties for the first two periods against Montreal, then no penalties against Buffalo, then no penalties last night until early in the second.

  15. Could that be because Renney finally opened his mouth about the brutal officiating?

For 4 seasons he’s clammed up and let the refs kill us, out of some misguided idea that if he “respects” the refs, then they will respect the team. Bull$hit.

The only rule that holds is “The squeeky wheel gets the oil”. That’s why Cindy is always complaining to the refs. He gets special attention and protection from the refs, because they don’t want to hear his yapping all game.

Screw the refs. If they are biased or make terrible calls, they need to hear it from Renney. Otherwise there’s no incentive for them to change, and like the last 3 seasons, the bad calls will keep coming.

  16. What I found funny is not that Hossa had a trick, but that one of the teams is literally called “Team Jagr.” Nothing like milking your only talent

  17. Bottom line… they played well last night… in every zone on the ice. Even Gomez looked like a defensive specialist out there.

The powerplay looked bad again but as someone pointed out the other day to me… the PP looking good means no shorties so I guess we’ll have to take it.

That play by Staal late in the game was subtle but a good play nevertheless. I think Micheletti’s point was that he didn’t panic, made the right play and for a kid that young, at this level is a very good thing for us.

  18. The KHL may be a poor man’s AHL, but ANY drain on the NHL talent pool is tantamount to further NHL expansion. The further diluting of the NHL talent-base is the last thing we need as hockey fans. More Kalinin’s finding jobs in the NHL is a nightmare. The NHL should have quit the expansion cancer at 16-24 teams, max.

Wrong! You are unwittingly proving Sam’s observation. Tearing up the KHL is the BEST these two can do.

  20. I always wanted Chris Neil on my team but what he did to Staal last night was bush league after turning down an invite from Orr. I just lost respect for the guy..maybe Ruutu is wearing off on him.

This is what I don’t like about Renney after what Neil did…Orr should have been on the ice the rest of the game…even on the power play…because Neil or anyone else on the team had to pay.

Renney is too soft when it comes to stuff like that.

  21. Casual observer,
Obviously there’s a lot of factors that go into comparing player’s performance, but those two are out-performing Jagr who had 70+plus points in the NHL last year…hmmm. That kinda squashes your theory.

Grave9 is Almano …both are confusing me…i might have to skip thier retarded posts.

Lmao your horrendous spelling and grammar crack me up. I wish I was Alamo he’s almost as funny as your ill informed posts. Go get on the short bus and enjoy the ride to candyland. Oh yeah it’s their not thier retard.

  23. Speaking of the refs….does it ever seem to you all, that the refs in a Canadian city always seem to find a way to favor the Canadian ( or home) team when dishing out penalties? Two flagrant holds against Rangers, one flagrant trip, and then one ref gets Naslund for a DIVE , on a play where he was cross checked off his feet from behind…he never saw the guy who dd it.

    Priceless.

  24. I see some revionist history going on re: Hossa. He was about as wsorthless as can be but Renney kept giving the assclown chance after chance(at the expense of real Nhl players) Outside of a couple weeks during the 06-07 he was the worst player on the ice game after game. Renney spent nearly three years just throwing him out there and it drove me nuts.

  25. You’re right Sam. The NHL is filled with amazing players like Ryan Hollweg and Dan Fritsche and Aaron Voros. Who needs skill? Sounding like Don Cherry is not a compliment Sam.

  26. Effin Renney must have called Tom Coughlin for good luck and jinxed the giants. Now I have to watch these A holes botch things up in April

  27. sam i agree with you.
That league is filled with players who are old and cant play at the level they used to and young players who cant cut it in the league. Half the people on this blog are still drooling over Shanny. That league is a bunch has beens and never weres. If Shanny was European he would have signed with one of those teams.

  28. PIERRE

Id prefer it if they fought for that number right now, instead of later.

You’re a retard, you bitch aboot me using the “old man” card all the time, you use the same old material, and on top of that you make fun of someone for misspelling, lol, im sorry, its one thing to get into blog arguments, but its pretty fuggin sad that you’re taking all this seriously. Ahaha, loser !!! This is fun.

  29. So here’s a quote from the Yahoo news story about the Devs signing Shanny and about where he is “meant” to fit in:

“While Shanahan was targeted for his special teams play, Lamoriello expects him to be a full-time player.

The Devils entered Saturday night’s game at Los Angeles having lost two straight and three of five, leaving them third in the tight Atlantic Division race. They were beaten 4-0 at home by lowly Atlanta on Thursday and have scored only 12 goals in five games.

Their power play, ranked 21st in the 30-team NHL, went 0-for-7 in the latest loss and is in a 5-for-36 rut over nine games. The Devils, shut out three times in that span, are 19th in penalty-killing.”

So, how about the Rangers’ Power Play? We must be ranked last in the league. How about you just sign Shanny to add that to our lackluster craphole of a power play? Unless we make a blockbuster trade at some point between now and the trade dealine, I can’t see us getting much better. Thoughts?

Looks like Hanks getting focused at the right time . With Philly and NJ right in the mix …we need wins or none of us will be watching Ranger playoff hockey.

You wrote: “What I found funny is not that Hossa had a trick, but that one of the teams is literally called “Team Jagr.” Nothing like milking your only talent”

I don’t think it’s actually intended as that. The Russians have a long history of referring to teams by the super stars on them. Also, the teams were intended to be a version of a “Team North America” vs. “Team USA” breakdown that the NHL experimented with as well since the players on Yashin’s team were all Russian-born, while Jagr’s team were all foreign-born. They just name the All-Star teams in a different syntax due to cultural and linguistic differences.

  32. KHL sucks big time. Jagr wants to return??? Of course, he’s not as washed up as Yashin. KHL was never a threat to NHL. That’s it.
Hey, what happened to Giants offense Today??? Eli sucked big time, jezz, they missed Plax big time. But, the guy is an idiot. They could have repeat.

  33. F’EN PISSED, MOTHER F’ER! i cant believe the Giants lost to the Eagles FUDGE! The Rangers dont even make me that happy anymore with their bull crap.

  42. Greg if Sam didn’t ban you and Orr he’s not banning anyone he’s a lib who won’t do anything. Orr wishes death on other posters and Nhl players and Sam like a puss does nothing. Orr was banned from 3-4 other boards but since Sam’s a puss he won’t ban him or his gay lover like yourself.

As bad as Tom Renney has been , Sacking him at this moment might do more harm than good. We ride out this season and re-evaluate Renney and Sather , maybe both will be let go?
Sather most un-likly but the name Messier has been thrown around!!! So who knows.

Prucha scoffed at being sent down for good reasons. In this new NHL , Prucha ‘s good . Tom Renney may not like it at the time but has changed his tune now. Prucha is all fired up!!!

  51. Is it me or was this blog much easier to read when Greg L and ORR were serving their sentences? Chirst almighty… talk about a couple of shems.

Yeah Salty , I got over peeps saying i was right that night we bet. You know I did!

  55. Not a lot has changed here with what is to be expected from people who hide behind their keyboard and pad their egos.

A few strange posts I can’t ignore though:

Someone criticized Sam for using “Korpedo” as a nickname? Are you kidding me? It’s been his nickname for years and it’s better than people making him Polish and calling him KorpikoWski. It’s one of the few nicknames that make sense and it’s a blog, so get over it.

Revisionist history is dead on. People looking to trash Renney for all the Ranger ills are stretching it a bit with saying that Hossa was stunted by Renney. I’m up for a coaching change myself, but it’s just insane that people have such short memories. These are the same people that cursed Renney up and down for putting the guy on the 1st or 2nd line for a ridiculous amount of time. HE had some good stretches, but he failed with THREE NHL teams here, so Sam’s comments are dead on. The KHL is bush league at best, and their leading scorers pretty much prove it (Finances, personel moves and the handling of Cherapanov are further evidence!)

Jan Marek never even wanted to come to the NHL. Pavel Brendl was immature and unmotivated and failed to make at least three other teams after the Rangers. The Rangers (like many other teams) are guilty of showing lack of patience with several players or pushing others too early. But to say that the Rangers last patience with Brendl is grasping at straws for ways to criticize. Again, the fact that Hossa, Brendl and Marek are the top players in that league (whether they ouyscore Jagr, whose point totals have deteriorated over the past few seasons) says more about the KHL than it does the Rangers. There is no comparison between the leagues and Joe Michelletti and Sam have the right to take shots at that league all they want.

  56. the real graves9 on

You guys hit the nail on the head. Salty you winning that bet was the high water mark for this board.

  57. Greg ill post wherever i want you go find another board to post your childish remarks along with ORR.

  58. the real graves9 on

Good to see you back Mark. We’re on the same page on the sack of crap Hossa. I recall us all celebrating when Hossa was finally traded away.

  59. liked what renney did last night(not really a fan of his) putting orr out against Neil after the first scrum with Staal. but Neil was to smart, if he went with Orr it would have been a good trade off for the rangers. instead he waited for Staal, better trade off for Ottawa. that is why Neil is so good at what he does. but i give renney credit for trying.

  60. This was not a game the Rangers won so much as it was a game the Sens lost because the Sens played a real stinker. With a few exceptions, this Ranger team plays like a unit with job security overseen by a coach who wants to be their best friend as well as housemother. It may not make the playoffs as presently constituted but if it squeaks in, it will not go deep. Tom Renney is a bright hockey man and a good guy, but he can’t control his team; he should be promoted and replace by someone like John Tortorella or Bob Hartley. All fans including me like to feel good about the team, but then there is the truth.

  61. Jacobs could have done it on that 4th and inches, but instead they had Eli try to gain that…retardedly…I’m not even into football but I know that if you have a guy like Jacobs you let him power through that. That was the game right there.

  62. the real graves9 on

Plus they had first and 5 on the 21 year line of the Eagles and they called three passing plays. Pretty stupid play calling if you ask me.

  63. Badseed, thanks for the kind words, I enjoy coming here, I don’t have many people to talk hockey with outside like 4-5 of my friends and it’s good to know that there are still some hardcore Rangers fans out there.

BTW that Giants game today was depressing; Kevin Gilbride called a predictable and conservative game, it was like the Jim Fassell Tiki in his peak era all over again. They need to draft another linebacker to give Kiwi/Tuck/Osi (hopefully he’s healthy) a little more backup and they need another receiver. It was nice to see Big 98 Fred Robbins who is like the Blair Betts of the Giants with a pick though. The outcome sucked, I hate Philly. I hope this means the Rangers go all 86 on the Flyers in the playoffs.

  68. Ha graves fricken Espo traded them for fricken shot knees Carpenter and then traded Carpenter a month of so later. Fricken Espo what a fricken horrible GM.

Penguins and Devils are finnally showing weakness , Nice to see them falter. They both Suck . Now we have to hope Philly goes on a losing streak!!

  71. “Z” Zorro, Korpi, & Dubie should be kept together for a while. They look like they could generate some scoring. I still like Gomez & Drury & Naslund together as a line. Maybe we could have a new smurf line of Callahan, Dawes & Prucha. Renney needs to solidify all the lines. Rosy & Redden playing better. Staal is getting better by the day. Once he developes his offensive play, watch out. Gomez has improved his defensive game but has to do better on offense. As a team Rangers playing better defensively. Still need a big forward & defenseman b4 trade deadline. The bottom line and good news is even though we’re playing so-so hockey we’re staying close to the top of our division.

  72. How bout that ”erant” cheapshot elbow by Pronger on Parise? I’m sure Campbell won’t even review the tapes. Pronger gets away with all kinds of cheapshots.

“Someone criticized Sam for using “Korpedo” as a nickname? Are you kidding me? It’s been his nickname for years and it’s better than people making him Polish and calling him KorpikoWski. It’s one of the few nicknames that make sense and it’s a blog, so get over it”

Ahaha, exactly. I hate people who think they know the kid, and his future, and what he will be like 10 years from now, yet they add a fuggin letter to his name that’s not even there. KOS, not KOWS. I don’t have a problem with people making mistakes on names, especially Euro names, but jeez that one mistake is pretty annoying.

Lol, you just said you weren’t gonna post anything that had to do with me, but you just did. Loool, retard. And why do i have to go into detail aboot your funeral, most old people take care of that shit before they die. If you don’t know things like that, then lucky for you i just told you, i mean you wouldn’t want me coming to your funeral to take a 27 second piss on your cheap grave, would you ? You’re in your 60’s, and you sit on your comp all day watching porn, and blogging, that wouldn’t be considered exercise, and no wacking the willy isn’t exercising, so its not like you have long to live. Point being, take care of funeral stuff before you go, or things could get complicated.

And how the fugg would you know that i post here the most ?? That proves my point, that you have NO LIFE ! You actually sit in front of your comp, and count my number of posts. LOOOOL, what a loser. Im all torn up, i wanted to be your “blog friend” but you don’t like me, ahaha, aww oh well. Before you get to attached to everyone here who you think are your dearest friends, you should know something. They don’t give a fugg aboot you, you’re just some random loser. Maybe they think of me the same way since we both have said pretty nasty things here, but the difference between you and me is, for me its not the end of the world, but for you, your “friends” don’t like you, and i know that’s painful for you, lol, but please don’t commit suicide, its not worth it, you’ll make new friends, i don’t know, buy a dog or something. Anyway, ill take you up on that bet, im sure you’ll still read my posts, but what the hell, you’re obsessed with me, no big deal.

    BAD

Nooooo, really ?? Of course i don’t know what Korpedo will be like, that was my fuggin point you moron, try reading before posting, i gave that advise to your boy friend but he didn’t take it, which is why he’s the same ol loser as always. Tell me once where i said i know how he’ll be, jerkoff. Lol, this blog is more fun with the bashing going on, although id prefer it after a loss.

Goodnight, and good luck with the funeral BS, my best wishes, lol.

I understand your ten years old but nobody no matter the age puts a guest list for their fucking funeral. Who would care who’s at their funeral. Like I said you never ever make freaking sense. I can’t wait till you are put out of your misery. Where is Dr. Kevorchik when you need him? Oh yeah tell your slut of a mom I said my boy alamo wants his 50 bucks back she wasn’t that good. Be happy.

I’d like to apologize to the posters here only to talk Hockey on my end but the 10 year old troll gets on my last nerve. On other boards he’d be banned but Sam either doesn’t pay attention to the comments section or is just soft as hell. I apologize on his latest gibberish post he stated he’d take me up on my bet so his next post refereing to me or greg’s and they have to leave for a month ditto for me.

Jesus freaking christ! How the heck is this guy not banned? How? On any other board he’d be gone. Sam buddy do freaking sumething, geez. The guy even admits he likes getting into personal beefs do sumething already. I like graves but if you wanna be fair maybe graves needs to go too but geez show some guts and do sumething.

  82. Arguing on the Internet is like the special olympics.

No matter who wins, you’re still a fucking retard.

  83. No problem here with Shanny joining the Devils. The guy wanted to play. He gave slats every chance to pull the trigger, but for whatever reason, right or wrong, he didn’t. Shanny’s one of my favorite all-time NHL’ers. I don’t know if I’ll make it to any more games this season, but I’d chear for him if I had the chance. He was Lou’s 1st ever draft pick. It’s not like Shanny was a life-long Ranger. He had to do what he had to do. Good luck Shanny…but not too much.

Really makes me laugh when people look to criticize a team(not just limited to coaching here) for not giving young guys a chance…when we have the 6th(maybe 5th) youngest team in the league. As if Staal, Cally, Girardi, HANK, Korpi, & Dubi don’t exsist. Staal’s the only one there that’s a 1st round pick. If you look at the teams younger than us, you’ll find a handful of 1st rounders. Post-lockout, I think the Rangers are one of the better teams developing young players that don’t have the skill of Toews, Kane, Crysob, etc.

I watched the KHL a.s. game and thought it was a fun game to watch. The setting was phenominal. I think that’s what made it so cool. The craziest part was hearing all those names of former NHL’ers.

  84. Beer: sixth youngest… and I point that out all teh time…ur average age is 26.7 The youngest (Chi) is 25.5 PIT is 27.1 and the oldest team is Det at 31.4

  85. I’m glad Shanny’s out of the picture. Signing him would have probably meant the end of Korpikoski or Prucha’s season. Korpikoski would have been sent to Hartford and Prucha would never see the ice again.

Now all we have to wait out are the Forsberg rumors!

  86. btw tomorrow is the skating party at Bryant Park. They put the game up on big screens and some Ranger alumni will be there (Graves at least)

  87. Rob L.

Well we dont have to worry about Forsberg. He made it clear he only really wants to go to the Avs or Philly.

  88. Thanks Agr. Can’t bring’em all up.

Mako – That’s what I’ve been hearing all along. I don’t see it happening either.

But on that topic, I read that the B’s are looking to grab a fwd between now and the deadline. With Bergeron & Sturm out, they need to fill a hole. One of the names mentioned was Keith (I’m gonna mess this up) Tkachuk. He’ll be 37 in March, has 14 goals this season, and is healthy enough to still be an effective player on the PP. It’s said that JD doesn’t have much choice than to move him with his contract up at the end of the year ($4mil/yr).

Erik Cole’s deal is up at the end of the year too. I could see EDM resigning, but could be dealt also. I’ve liked that dude since he was coming back from his neck injury right around Messier Night. They interviewed Cole at intermission a few nights later and actually interrupted Sam to comment on how ‘classy’ the organization is with that stuff.

  89. Lecavlier rumours swirling about Montreol today!!!
    Nothing new there

speaking of young teams….Montreol, Columbus and Washington all have claimed to have been energized by their youngsters being called up due to excessive amounts of injuries..you know “the young guys are coming up and trying to stay so their energy rubs off etc etc…”

Maybe the Rangers listlessness problem this year can be blamed on being too healthy??

the only rookie hanging around is Korpi

    I’m just saying

  90. kaspar – I know it’s really hard to quantify that thought, but I think it’s pretty valid. Maybe they should fire Reg Grant & Jim Ramsey!

  91. the rangers have 2 sets of rules, that’s the problem….guys that need to hustle to stay, and guys that it doesn’t matter what they do.

we don’t “need” injuries to get those guys into the line-up up front, we already have Korpi, Prucha, Dawes, Callahan. What we need is 7 D-men, with one sitting, ready to go, and for our “untouchable” forwards to be held more accountable.

  92. yeah
just kidding…nobody needs to get hurt here

Hey….that AS game at Red Square was something
I mean Wrigley has nothing on it

I like the funny little pictures of Jags and Yash-man on the TV screen the whole game; beside the scores

it was like a video karate screen!!

  93. BEER ME!

It’s not that the Rangers are not young, it is the way young players are treated here. With rare exceptions, like Staal, they are mistreated and mishandled by Renney to a ridiculous extreme. Never in all my years as a Rangers and a hockey fan, have I seen such callous treatment and manipultion of younger players, and such moronic deference to older players who cannot cut it anymore, at the expense of the younger players. Best recent example is flying Potter to the west coast with the team to sit on his butt, in deference to not giving Kalinin or Redden a night off. You tell me – Dawes, Pock, Prucha, Korpikoski, Potter, and now Sangs – which have not been jacked around by this retard coach? It never ends and will not end until this jerk off is gone.

Getting rid of Renney will feel almost like winning the Cup, around my house, at least.

  94. We’ll just have to disagree to the fullest extent on this one. How many teams have 2 representatives in the youngstars game?

  95. So, Prucha scores 55 goals in first two seasons, but Renney doesn’t know how to manage a young player? Maybe its that Dawes, Pock, Korpikoski just aren’t THAT special? Korpikoski has been playing pretty consistently on the 3rd line this year. He’s been a scratch a few times, but hes a young player. Do you want him on the first line just becuase he’s young? I agree Sanguinetti should be given a shot in place of Kalinin, but the Renney criticism of players like Korpikoski and Dawes is a little misguided.

  96. Kryzstof,

it’s not so much criticism of how Korpi & Dawes have been handled. It’s more that there are 2 (or more) sets of rules, which contributes to or enables the veterans suckage.

Handling of Prucha has been a fiasco, and the handling of the veterans has been too laid back.

If the team were more of a meritocracy, where younger players are rewarded for what they do well, and older players get negative reinforcement for their laziness or poor decisions, that would sit better with me

  97. I don’t care what you have to do Sather but get me Vinny Lecavalier. Trade anyone besides Hank and Staal.

  98. Tony – Beat someone up and take them.

No, seriously… I’d say craigslist.com I’ve gotten better deals there than anywhere else. You run the risk of getting scammed though. More times than not you can tell when it doesn’t seem right.

Ticketmaster.com releases tickets sometimes without announcing them. Never anything cheap, but at least they’re face value. Plus a million bucks worth of fees! I’ve seen seats within 10 rows of the ice available almost every game there. $265 each is a bit steep for me though.

Ticketexchange via ticketmaster is secure, but the prices seem stupid-high sometimes.

Ebay is a pretty trustworthy source. You’ll pay a tad more usually, but it’s secure.

Or you never know what some of the season ticket holders here have to offer.

    Hope that helps. Good luck.

  99. Thanks Nasty ! Wanna give me a gift ?
I’m going to NY for 2 weeks in March & I thought I’d go to the Fishsticks game on the Island & the Bruins game in MSG.
Any one ever use Stub Hub ?
The Ranger ticket exchange is outrageous!

  100. Seems there’s been a rash of digs taken at the KHL’s expense lately. First Micheletti, and now Sam. Why are you guys getting so fired up over it?

  101. howyagonnatellme on

    “Kryzstof January 12th, 2009 at 11:08 am

So, Prucha scores 55 goals in first two seasons, but Renney doesn’t know how to manage a young player?”

    Are you serious?

Prucha is 100% the case in point, how Renney does not handle young players well.

I read a good post (I think it was here) regarding Marcel Hossa. If this was Marcel Hossa or Nik Zherdev, would we see the resurgence we saw in Prucha? Prucha is succeeding now because he didn’t have high expectations of himself walking into the NHL, because even with his rookie season, he knows what he can do and what he can’t. In interviews, he even says, “it’s my role, it’s the players around me, it’s playing how the coach wants me to play” meaning Prucha understands the circumstances that help him succeed, and the circumstances that have hurt him. But he’s kept a smile and still works hard, for himself and for the team.

This would have killed Zherdev. This would have killed many other players. It has hurt Prucha’s career irreversibly, IMO, but at least Prucha’s clawing his way back.

Sitting kids in a press box is not not not OK. It’s a confidence killer. It tells those players that the team is better off without them. That the coach has no confidence in them. Look at Tomas Polk.

Look at Tyutin’s success with the bluejackets. Where was that Tyutin, here? I have been missing him since 2006.

Dubinsky has fallen off the wagon.

We see the success this season of Callahan, but will it be like Prucha’s and Tyutin’s success? When the next Brendan Shanahan comes along to take his ice time away, and his power play time away, what will be left of Cally?

Rarely does a player score 30 goals and then 7. Injuries aside. Sure, players can have fluke rookie years, and sometimes players DO disappear, but there is a clear trajectory of Prucha’s success when you look at his PP ice time, which is clearly a symptom of Renney’s pro-veteran behavior.

  102. To all – Thanks for the ticket info.
I’ll be in NYC for 2 weeks in March. If you guys want, I’ll kick greg, orr or anyone else’s ass for you.
It’s want I do. I’m out here in AZ on the witness protection program !

  103. “When the next Brendan Shanahan comes along to take his ice time away…”

“…but there is a clear trajectory of Prucha’s success when you look at his PP ice time, which is clearly a symptom of Renney’s pro-veteran behavior.”

Which is it? GM or coach?

  104. hey…where’d that Shane Doan rumor come from. I’m a little afraid to ask. But I like his play a lot.

  105. Hey, Tony

I thought we dumped you with Big Pussy off the Shore. We’ll be looking for ya at Uniondale.

  106. Don’t remember who it was, but whoever said last week that Prucha was a one-dimensional player is not someone I would want evaluating talent for me.

  107. Well Eklund reported the Doan rumors but I also heard about it from a friend who sometimes gets inside info. It would be Doan, Jovo, and another younger NHL player for 2 NHL players from our team and one from Hartford.

  108. ehhh…not interested anymore. Not because of eklund. But Jovo has seen FAR better days. Do we need another ‘change of scenery’ guy?

Funny though that slats REALLY can’t find anyone to deal with other than phx, edm, etc.

  109. tony… for the fishsticks just wait till you are here and then go to the coliseum… they will have tix available right up until two days or so before the game… Isles fans don’t sell… but have you been on LI before? There is little to no public transport its a mess of buses and trains to get to the coliseum (as I understand it… its only one bus for me because I will just walk the mile to get to that stop or I can take a car)

For the Rangers v Bruins maybe you should just bite the bullet and go for ticketmaster. I know folks who use stub hub and they’ve never been burned…

  110. howyagonnatellme on

    Beer Me!

“Which is it? GM or coach?”

Both. One or the other. I’m not sure. I’m not in on the inner workings of the organization.

I DO know that Sather probably expects his summer work to reflect in the line up come October. (I’m not sure why he’d rather not see his drafting there… but hey.) At the same time, as far as I’m aware Renney makes the final say on who’s riding pine and who’s getting 20 minutes a night.

The GM, again, this season, signed too many forwards while we had not enough spots. That screams to me that he was expecting something different. Someone on the team that shouldn’t have been. (Read: Prucha.) Why would he go out and sign Rissmiller after getting Fritsche and having been in on Sundin since the summer? He was expecting a different look to the team.

Remember, this is the GM who refused the youth movement until it forced upon him with the oncoming lockout and the potential salary cap everyone knew was coming.

Coach, on the other hand, doles out the ice time. I’m not sure if he’s getting messages from above, but he’s making the final determination of ice time. Shanahan, although signed by Sather, did not HAVE to get 18 minutes of work a night. He COULD have been used as a PP guy, a third line guy. However, he wasn’t.

  111. tony – actually, I think if you ask, you can sit on the bench out in LI. Sometimes they’ll even let you drive the zamboni!
