Valiquette to start in place of ill Lundqvist

292

The last time the Rangers faced the Capitals, it was Washington that was saddled with a sick goaltender, with Jose Theodore forced to start in place of a flu-stricken Brent Johnson (Johnson did come in briefly after the Rangers pounced on Theodore to start, but he didn’t last — nor did the Rangers lead).

Now it’s Henrik Lundqvist who has taken ill and “who will be replaced tonight by Stephen Valiquette.”:http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/hockey/rangers/blog/. Valiquette has won his last two starts, both in overtime, and has allowed just two goals each time.

LI Joe, for the money we paid for Valliquette we could’ve gotten Ty Conklin, currently spliting duties in Det. Or we could’ve paid a little more (.275k) and gotten Alex Auld. Valli does OK once every 6 games, but those guys have similar numbers with larger duties. We don’t know how Vali does if Hank misses any time. With either Conklin or Auld, I’d feel safer.

ford, I never pegged Voros as a replacement for Avery, only for Hollweg. The guy was a career AHLer who had played only 55 career games in a 4th line role. That says Hollweg to me, not Avery. And as I said, the grades were per MY expectations.

Repost #2, which preceded repost #1 chronologically:

My report card (grades based on performance against my personal expectations and contracts):

    A: Betts, Callahan
    A-: Staal, Mara
    B+: Hank, Naslund, Zherdev
    B: Girardi, Valiquette, Voros
    B-: Dubinsky
    C+: Dawes, Sjostrom
    C: Drury, Orr
    D: Gomez, Korpedo, Rozsival
    F: Redden, Kalinin.

    Fritsche/Prucha/Potter incomplete.

    Some explanations:

Betts: Plays his role well and even has chipped in some offense.

Callahan: I expected very little of him and he has really impressed me with his fire.

Staal: Our best defenseman. The only reason he isn’t an A is because I had expected him to work on his shot during the offseason, but it’s still terrible.

Mara: I’d give him an A but his play lately has been tailing off.

Hank: Started the season out of control good, but has proven yet again that he doesn’t have a full season of great play in him.

Naslund: I thought we would be getting 15-20 goals from out of him in a terrible signing. Instead, we’re getting goal scoring at about an equal pace as Shanahan’s first season in NY, at the same dollar amount. Let’s see if he is better than Shanny down the stretch.

Zherdev: can disappear at times, but he’s leading the team in points, and is on pace to have career high totals in assists and points.

Girardi: Slipping away at times from the basic solid defensive play that earned him a contract extension. But he’s shown he can handle the big minutes and get involved offensively. Definitely still a work in progress.

Vally: overpaid for what he brings to the table.

Voros: Started well above what anyone, including him, could ever have expected. Now he can get back to the role he was brought he for, an upgrade for Hollweg. That’s what he should focus on.

Dubinsky: Needs a dynamic wing in order to excel. He has the talent, but he needs someone there to give him the confidence. I said it during the offseason and I’ll say it again now: the number 1 reason I wanted them to resign Jagr was for Dubinsky’s sake. When he had Zherdev to start the season he did incredibly well. Now with a rotating cast of dregs, not so much. He’s still 5th on the team in points despite being on the 3rd line. But, he also has the 2nd lowest shooting % for forwards at 5.4%. So, hard to say.

Dawes: I expected a lot from him and he just hasn’t brought it. He has been better defensively, but his offensive game has suffered greatly as a result. He’s a better playmaker than finisher, I wish he would concentrate on that instead of the goals.

Sjostrom: Didn’t expect much and I’m not being disappointed… except when they play him on a line other than the 4th. Lowest shooting % of all the forwards.

Drury: 7 million for 5 years for 25 points.

Orr: His skating has greatly improved, as has his overall hockey skill. But we don;t need him to skate well and play well, we need him to fight. Only 8 fights this season. Also, took a beating from Mike Rupp.

Gomez: 7.35 million for 7 years for 25 points. Granted, he missed time for injuries, but he gets to play with the better wings, and we expect him to score many more points. Also, his whopping 5.8 shooting % despite leading the team in shots isn’t helping.

Korpedo: 1 goal, 2 assists. I expected more from him.

Rozsival: Defensively, a nightmare. Offensively, he’s starting to put it together. But still a long way to go.

Redden: Not as bad as Kalinin, but will kill our cap for the next half of a decade.

Kalinin: I would rank Kalinin lower than an F if I could because not only is he just the worst, but I expected a lot of him. I thought Sather did a good job when he signed him. Man, has he proven me wrong. Just, the worst defenseman I’ve seen in NY since the lockout. I’d say before the lockout too, but we’ve had some pretty bad players.

Fristche: Hasn’t had enough time to really show me something, but from what I’ve seen, I’m not impressed.

Prucha: Bad to start the season, his confidence shattered by 2 years of Renney jerking him around. But there is no doubt that in the last two games he got to play that he wasn’t one of, if not the best player on the ice for the Rangers (especially against the Islanders).

Potter: Is worlds better than Kalinin. Better than Redden? Probably not, but he is paid a lot less.

  3. Fran – I just don’t think the coaching staff is the biggest problem that this team has right now. I look at this team and a lot of guys could/should be playing better. I’m not a believer in benching guys like Drury/Gomez/Redden as they will be here for a while and I don’t actually think there is anyone better to play. Other than Kalinin, I don’t see who should sit.

I also don’t look at this team and say this lineup should coast into the Cup finals. This team will be lucky to have one 30 goal scorer, not due to style of play but rather personnel. Nothing the coaching staff can do about that.

  4. This is good. Lundqvist has been terrible, and still has not gotten out of his slump. Valliquette needs to have a big game, and Orr needs to make sure Brashear doesn’t play dirty. Also Semin is back, so gotta watch him. We cant have Kalinin giveaway’s like the last game., especially with Ovechkin.

Lundqvist needs to get out of this slump. He’s probably so high on coke that he couldn’t play tonight. At least Hank can tell when he’s too drugged up to play, unlike Redden.

  5. Valiquette in: “D” needs to step it up, big time! – you hear that Redden-you swine!!

  6. Doodie after the year Conklin had last year he sure isn’t signing with a team that would only starting his 10-12 games a year.

  7. lobstah, what did you call me?? I resemble that remark!lol

jjp, what really summed it up for me was renny the other night on VS. telling the guy with the mic that you had to be “patient” against the islanders. I mean come on, if you can;t attack the worst team in the league, if you’re laying back feeling out the 30th place team in the league, you have the wrong guy coaching.

Hey Sam you gonna grow a spine and ban bob already? This is getting beyond absurd.

  9. Dubi or not Dubi on

Haha, Hank probably told Renney that he’s not in the mood to get run tonight by a team that goes hard to the net because of the Mr. Softee defense.

  10. Dubi or not Dubi on

bob you are the fucking man I worship at your altar. bob, bob , bob , bob!!!!!!!

  11. Dubi or not Dubi on

(Real Dubi), funny thing is that I actually think Bob adds a certain element, but I am honored that someone faked my name!

  12. Why do they always look like they’re in each others way? It’s not enough that they have to play the other team… they have to fight each other for space and the puck.

Clear sign of a team not being on the same page.

  13. i mean so far not a disaster but joe m just said they look really sharp! to me they have been hanging on

  14. Wow! I’m honored that some asshole imposter decided to post as me. Cheers! I’m opening a nice bottle of Chimay Red Ale right now, this first sip is for you.

  15. Watching on Center Ice… so it’s the Caps feed. They’re just laughing at this team. “their stars aren’t playing like it… they must have liked the nightlife in Prauge, that’s why they came out hot at the start of the season…” blah blah blah

  16. Another good shift by Prucha. Renney wasnts him to have sustanability though. Thank God he won’t get pp time.

  17. cardinals played to win the game. others could learn a thing or 2 like the jets and rangers

  18. Doodie Machetto on

I’m watching the game on the Washingotn feed. The announcers just went on about how the Rangers are the only team in the league that carry only 6 defensemen, thus not putting any pressure on the top 6 guys.

When even Washington’s broadcast crew know that it’s a problem, you know you’re making a mistake. Way to go Tom.

  19. I wasn’t to happy with that period overall. But at least its 0-0. Renney needs to put Dawes with Gomez, and Naslund, in my opinion.

Did anyone see Crosby sucker punch that Panther player? He thinks he’s a tough guy all of a sudden, but he dropped the gloves off the faceoff and never gave the Panther a shot. Im sure he wont get suspended though, cause he is Crosby.

He looked cool though, i wish he was a Ranger. I wish these guys had the guts to do that.

  20. Pearn ” I think we played a good period of hockey ” hey asshole did ya notice ya didnt score!!!! Typical Renny and company theoligy, lets wait and see how the other team plays. MAKE ME PUKE !!!!! FIRE THEM ALL

  21. Imagine if Ovechkin was on the Rangers! Then we would have 3 players that play with balls (Callahan, Staal)

Ovechkin is the best overall player in the league…hands down!

  22. If AO was on the Rangers Renny would ruin him too, although me`s thinks the caveman would had Renny his balls on his stick LOL

  23. I would trade my wife and one of my kids for Ovechkin. The guy is just the most complete player I have ever seen. He is the best player in the world. 235 pounds and just pure intensity.

    Shutup bob.

  25. Doodie Machetto on

Nasty, I’m sure they would both love to know that. At least it is for Ovechkin. Better than say, for a sandwich or something.

  26. Did you see Redden nonchalantly give up the puck to the Cap in the neutral zone? You cannot imagine how someone can be this bad at hockey!

Drury has been awful too! I can’t stand him!!

  27. Fine Doodie, I would trade just my wife and neither kid. Does that make it better? Ha. If Pru scored on that play before I would have gooooooed myself.

  28. How’s that for sustainable, Coach? Bench Prucha again – I need an excuse to kick your dog and take dump in your pretty petunia garden.

  29. Sorry for the double, but nice right Wade. Now how bout you show that heart for the rest of ’09?

  30. Micheletti ” Tom is preaching a defensive game he said we are a 2-1 team, you may go into Washingtons arena and lose but if ya play a good defensive game thats OK UGHHHHHHHH What a A–Hole is the disease that contagious I HATE THEM ALL

  31. Maybe offsides, but prucha is the man.

Still cannot believe I saw Redden just drop that guy.

  32. If Prucha is not on the next power play opportunity this team gets, I defy anyone to tell me that would not constitute coaching malpractice.

  33. Now Renney puts Prucha on the pp. Whatever. 12 shorties against ten away from tying the record.

  34. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s actually funny at this point. Getting a PP is a curse.

  35. ford
    January 3rd, 2009 at 8:34 pm
Yes, Prucha gets the minus for jumping on the ice for the last thirty seconds of the PP.

Renney is gonna scratch him again and Weinman and Gross will point to him being on for a shortie.

  36. onecupin67years on

The rangers continue to find ways to beat themselves.you don’t win Cups with crappy special team play, PK,PP, that’s the coaches and the players not being on the same page!!!

  37. Valiquette was pretty deep in the crease, and then the puck was deflected off Redden’s stick. but not a good goal.

drury has been awful, terrible, invisible.

  38. I love the Rangers PP unit with Gomez and Drury. Drury just sits in front of the net, without trying to add any creativity to the PP. I realize he’s screening and hoping for a rebound/deflection, but he just stands there the entire time. What makes it worse is that Callahan is on that PP line and many times both are doing the same thing. Talk about predictable and useless. I mean, Gomez is considered a playmaker…but who is he going to set up when both Cally and Drury are at the net, because it surely isnt for Gomez’s killer shot.

  39. The Tom Renney Hat Trick:

    1) A shortie against

    2) A bench minor for two many men on the ice

    3) Three post-game “quite honestlys” in the postgame press conference

  40. this is a very tough week. after wash, then pitt, montreal, and at buff. could be very borderline playoff team after this week

  41. I think the shorty is on the players. It’s in their heads… has been since like number 5… including Valley.

    Keep pissing away games though…

    Eventually somethings GOTTA CHANGE!!!

    RIGHT!!?

    FOR CHRIST’S SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!

    CHANGE SOMETHING!!!!!!!!

  42. lmao at Semin’s punches. I see idiot bob continues to try to pose as me. What a loser.

  43. Semin was just thrown out for hitting with his purse. Unbelievable. Won’t matter though, this team has nothing going on. Wait till Pitts and the Habs drop em this week….8th place and dropping.

  44. Things that never change:

    – Sun always comes up
    – Time waits for no man
    – Rangers give up shorties
    – Rangers can’t win if their goalie doesn’t pitch shutout

  45. How they can sit behind the net and do that… ughhhh.

No team in this league respects these guys. Why would you? They go after them at every chance.

  46. You know what the Rangers need? They need a large, dominating forward who has the ability to take over the game at any time. Someone who’s experienced, someone who can take the puck and just flat out play.

Oh yeah, that’s right, we had Jagr and told him to get lost.

  47. Chris,

Any sustained pressure from the Rangers since OCT? (3rd period against the Sharks I guess)

  48. if rennys and pern are still behind the bench after the allstar break you can forget making the playoffs

  49. Riche i agree with both posts…

WTF was practice about that I kept hearing about from sam and joe, more defense? why they scored too many goals against washington last week and against the islanders???

  50. Now we’ll hear how they played solid defensive hockey… only gave up 2 goals… and they were off for too long. This after a week of hearing how good practices and time to rest were needed.

They sure played great. Those practices were really helpful.

  51. Dubi or not Dubi on

Why the hell is Gomez out there right now, same with Naslund. Put the players who have been playing well out there. Oh great here comes Drury! Captain Invisible!

  52. Dubi or not Dubi on

Prucha has been the best player for the Rangers. Drury and Gomez have been appalling. Gomez has turned the puck over more than anyone on either team today.

  53. yeah lol… Im the other chris I knw another one posts here as Chris S maybe???

I always forget to identify myself, im chris “D”

  54. Dubi or not Dubi on

Drury was also supposed to be a faceoff wizard, so much for that…

I really can’t stand so many coaches/players on this team. They are testing my inner fanhood. I just have to remind myself that it’s all about what’s on the front of the jersey.

  55. FIRE. TOM. RENNEY.

THE ONLY PERSON WHO PROVIDED US A BRIGHT SPOT IS A GUY THE COACH DEEMED WORTHLESS! THIS IS RIDICULOUS!

FIRE PERRY PEARN! THE PP IS HORRENOUS!

    This is a DISGRACE!

  56. Sad part is this will be a victory in Rennys eyes The a-hole called it 2-1 Like he told micheletti we are a 2-1 team What a piece of dog shit

  57. drury should not be on the powerplay at all, nor should cally in reality but he looks like he is trying

  58. yeah his shit must have been in a knot becuase the scored 9 goals in the last two games before this one

must get back to 2-1 hockey

  59. Also- can someone tell me why it seems like Zerdev misses a shift here in there??

Is Z falling in to Pruchas boat with the genius???

If it was up t ome both would be on the same line

  60. lobstah, i agree with you that drury and gomez are horrible. your six-month old child can see it. then why oh why does you boy Renny keep throwing them out there when the game is on the line??

  61. graves – dubinsky? he has 5 goals i think. he is having an even worse season than gomez and drury

  62. This team has too much potential for this stupid coach. Sounds like the San Jose Sharks, 2nd round just isnt enough boys. We have too many good players that arent getting time.

Dubinsky, where are you? Hi. I’m Scott. You should score.

This is getting ridiculous. Really. Why do we give the young guys ice time if they arent doing shit? Prucha played just as well as the other night.

1st line should be PRUCHA-BETTS-KORPIKOSKI because NOBODY ELSE PLAYS LIKE THEY CARE!

  63. butch goring said in post game this team is heading towards not making the playoffs the way they’re playing. what can i say he’s right.

  64. pete I think your right, but please tell me that Im not crazy and I think that he sits Zerdev for a few shifts here and there, why I dnt know

  65. Only saw the last 15 minutes. heard the usual shorty on XM.

This team is groundhog day, do the same things wrong over and over.

The offense appears to be click par the course.

Great Kalinan back in the lineup since his play has been so stellar and he can improve after all he is only like a 7 yr vet.

Korpi is like Dubi doing everything well except there shots SUCK..

Staal is the only d man that hits. Ovechkin get s 7 shots a game against the Rangers that is obscene….

  66. Sjustrom sucks he needs to sit along with ORr and put Voros in the lineup. He can skate and no matter how he gets it done he has 8 goals, sjustrom has 2…………………

Orr needs to only play when a real enforcer is needed.

Nah I am wrong the rangers already have plenty of scoring in the lineup, my mistake. Keep in the 2 goal all skate no hand sjustrom and no skate ORR..

They gave up 2 goals again and lost, they cannot score……….

  67. They just don’t have any offensive gamebreakers that can take over a game. Zheredev is a guy that’s noticable for 3-4 shifts a game. Gomez is a turnover machine. Drury has been dreadful on both sides of the ice. Naslund is no longer an elite player. Dubi at times looks lost. He isn’t close to being an elite player yet. Sjostrom and Korpikoski skate real fast and are great pkers but they couldn’t put the puck in an ocean. Callahan is a very nice complimentary player. Dawes is so up and down who knows about him. Prucha could be a really solid player and a real asset on the pp but the coach flat out doesn’t believe in him nor does he wanna give him a chance. Prucha was the Rangers most dynamic player all game long and he barely got any icetime in the third. Henrik is this teams only elite player. Staal is a beast and once his offense comes around he’lll be a star. Imo he and Prucha were the Rangers best players. Staal hit and was nasty all night long.

  68. Is it safe to say that Renney’s attempted destruction of Prucha’s career was, ahem, misguided? In other words, is there anybody out there who still thinks Prucha “sucks?”

  69. Great job tonight. This was amazing hockey. The worst part is, they’re gonna miss the playoffs by a point, and finish in 9th, and wont be able to have a shot at Tavares, and Sather will draft the only bust of the draft, or a kid that will eventually die. God forbid. It’s just ridiculous how much this team sucks.

Dreary couldn’t even win a face-off, and he’s supposed to be our “clutch player”. And Blowez cant even gain the zone anymore, he’s probably to drunk off Mexican tequila that he cant see straight. Im sure Renney wont get fired after this, so round and round we go.

  70. onecupin67years on

Prucha does indeed suck, one or two goals aint foolin me,but then again most of this team sucks too, the difference between prucha and the rest of team is minutes played, let prucha play the next 43 games and maybe you’ll 5 more goals ,not 20,25 or even 10.

  71. I also forgot to mention that Valliquette was one of the best players on the ice. The second goal was unfortunate, but it was flukey. He was better than Lundqvist would have been, and kept them in it, but his teammates left him for dead.

  72. Joe he isn’t being payed like an elite player is he? Drury and Gomez are. Yes he’s having a sophmore slump. So did Zajac last year and Richards and Carter in the 06-07 season.

Shut the hell up bob already. The second goal was a joke you retard. Lundvist is the only reason this team was in first place the first 3 months of the season

  74. onecupin67years on

Most of you whine when the rangers lose and cheer when they win. so what’s it going to be? I’d like to see them be winner , but this team just doesn’t have the horses that the good teams have. Sather tried to buy another good team this year and so far has failed big time, maybe the slide from 1st on downward is coming this week, whatever ground they lose will be real hard to make up, I don’t see them getting into first again this year.

  75. one cup he’ll get twenty goals this year if he’s given icetime the next 42 games. Sadly he won’t get that.

  76. graves – maybe but the way people were carrying on early in the season i thought he was going to hit lotto contract wise after this yr.

he will only do something decent if he stays with Z. i would rather try Z with naslund and drury again, they seemed to play well together. but who knows since tom likes to juggle lines all the time.

  77. I’m not copying you graves9. Maybe it’s your lover dr.house. I know she wants you like she wants Shanahan. Don’t flatter yourself, i have a life outside this blog. You don’t. That Stall fight was a riot!

  80. Yeah whatever bob. Clearly you’re obessed with me(I’m pretty interesting but not that interesting) all your post under the guise of my name. You usually post that stupid shit as bob.

  81. I like the way Semin fights, at least it’s some comedy during a boring game. Between him, and Crosby’s fights, they’re just plain funny. I love them, but prefer Ovechkin obviously.

  82. One Cup

With the lethargic play of this team Prucha is one of very few playing with FIRE and AMBITION give me a team of Pruchas and a coach who knows how to use them and this team would be highly improved

  85. Does anyone remember the 3rd period when we played the Sharks? We dominated the best team in hockey(at the time). Where is that team on a nightly basis?

    Why don’t the players care?

Why are the coaches held accountable?(imagine if any other coach told their team and the fans that “we need to play 2-1 games”. 2 GOALS??!!! That’s all the coaches are asking for? Lets set the bar a little lower…How about we score 1 goal, we’ll give up one goal(assuming that all the other offensively minded teams understand our game plan), play for the shootout, and hope our goalie can bail us out…Oh wait, thats been our season.

How the hell can the friggin Devils be so close to us in the standings?

I have ZERO confidence when I watch these games. That is what this team has done to me. It gets old watching this team collapse in front of me. Let us all hope that this team shows REAL improvement otherwise we will be done in April.

  86. one cup

Based upon Zipay’s Ranger report card this is what the Rangers report card costs per grade:

    player salary total
    A) Stall 765k,callahan 600k 1,365,000
    B-)Naslund 5mill,zherdev 3,250mil , Valli-765k = 9million

So ,it seems that the high payed star, HA HA , performs the worst .

  88. hey guys it was a 2-1 game remember. we gotta wrap our f’in heads around it. man this team is not only bad but boring and very predictable. i know renny sucks but how about those 7 million dollar superstars we got. is it me or does every single player that comes here that was awesome on another team just suck ass once they become a ranger? way to get off to a great start to the new year with the exact same crap that they left off with.

  89. I like the way Semin fights, at least it’s some comedy during a boring game. Between him, and Crosby’s fights, they’re just plain funny. I love them, but prefer Ovechkin obviously.
I wanna swallow all three of their loads at once.

  90. graves i’m a 50 year old virgin still living at home have some mercy oh me or dont i may like it lmao!!!!!!!

  91. This team either scores 4 goals and gives up 5 or scores 1 goal and gives up 2. I’m not sure why the team can’t be good at both offense and defense in the same game. I can’t even remember the last time the Rangers had a convincing 5-1 win.

The Rangers used to thrive at winning low-scoring games last season and this is the second time they’ve lost 2-1 to the Caps. Something is wrong. The system no longer works. Aside from the atrocious PP and blowing leads, there is zero consistency from game to game in terms of defense and scoring. I think it’s time for Renney to go.

  92. bob punches like Semin on

this team is just terrible right now.
for a defensive system we are an embarrassment.
we have become the like the boring Devils of yore.
the devils have become the high scoring winning team. yuck!
Redden sucks, except for that punch.
Gomer has been useless. Drury, where are you?
we do have a few bright stars, Callahan, Staal, Prucha, and Dawes.
    Renney’s system is a joke.
I cringe when we get a PP.
For a “defense first” team, Renney better go back to his drawing board because if this is defense…we suck!

  93. im a virgin, lol. Quit flattering yourself, go get me a boyfriend, and pop my cherry. What a loser I am. I post here endlessly, and IM the only person who i see here posting every single second. I sit in MY SENILE parents basement, and click refresh ever 10-20 seconds ? I need a job you bum. Lol. Thanks for mentioning my name all the time, cause you’re flat out hilarious.

LMAO! Even ratface dr. house turns him down lol.

  96. Uhhh let’s get back to Hockey. Where is Sam with some quotes from Dreary and coach Tomfoolery?

  97. sam did not make the trip. usually doesn’t except for very close locals

BTW – this team is getting more and more boring

  98. What a joke. Washington is not far away. I think it’s a joke that his paper doesn’t send him on road trips. Yet Buttman continues to say the league is in great shape.

  99. well that is the way newspapers are operating more and more especially with regards to hockey. all about the allmighty $

  100. That was disgusting…the Rangers truly suck!

Renney – do you have any encouraging words, like “to a man” our team played hard. Hey maybe since we lost, it will give Renney another opportunity for him to bench Prucha since obviously he is the problem.

Hey Sather, thanks for handcuffing us into not being able to make ANY moves by signing Redden and Rosival for millions this summer -real smart.

  101. At some point, Sather’s interests will diverge from the coach’s, and if this slide toward 9th place continues, Renney will probably face the axe before Glennie will face the music about his misuse of 2008 UFA dollars. In other words, as much as Sather loves having a lapdog as his coach, he will gas that critter if he starts to feel the heat coming directly at him.

  102. I missed the game, but looks like it was another snoozefest.

    Again this team can’t score
Again they give up a shorthanded goal
Again Prucha makes Renney look like an idiot that he is

  103. onecupin67years on

I don’t see any hope for this team, they can’t seem to get a grip on playing 60 minutes of winning hockey and I have to give Renney credit ,he’s used the shootout win thing to get points after being nice and giving one to the opposition too.
Other than those bogus shootout wins this team is dismal, you have to be an idiot to think otherwise.
    Dolan you’re an Idiot!

  104. If Staal & Henrik were not on this team, I would not bother tuning into the games. Watching the Rangers play is like slowing down on the Southern State Pkwy to rubberneck a car crash…

Capt Dreary was horrible tonight again….He cant even stand on his skates and his face off skills are long gone.

Gomez is a pile of crap as well. When he is on the off wing he has zero moves to cut to the middle of the ice when he has the puck.

Staalsy is def. ahead of the learning curve at his age. I love seeing him go head 2 head with AO. Its nice to see his flash of offensive skills but the only thing I wish for is that he was a better closer and starts putting the puck in the net. He somewhat reminds me of James Patrick in that respect with making nice moves and not finishing. I think his total game will come around within 2 years and be top 5 in the league.

In regard to Dubinsky…did his offensive skills get abducted by aliens. He looks like a lost puppy on the ice now. WTF happened?

  105. I wonder who’s balls are pinker, Ovechkin, or Semin? Interesting.

    Dr.House

You know you love me, you love it when im always teasing you, it secretly turns you on. Im not a moron, that much i do know. Lol.

  106. Zherdev looked shitty tonite…He made some poor decisions with the puck in the offensive zone….

As far as moves/trades this year, I think that the Rangers will try to get an energy type forward and a mobile hard hitting Dman to replace Kalinin. Heck..I wouldnt mind a guy like Christian Ehrhoff from San Jose…Trade Rozy straight up for him.

  107. Whats with all the gay references and posts on this blog now? This is a NY Rangers forum, keep the posts on topic please.

  108. liquid, u wanna know what happened? reality happened. this team was put together by an idiot. the guy responsible for the coaching duties is way over his head now that the best thing that has happened to the rangers this decade has left, and now the supposed leaders of this team are total spuds

  109. liquid u gotta skip over the bobs n graves posts. they are probably the same person with split personality. they’d rather talk about hockey players nads than hockey

  110. mike, correct me if I am wrong…The majority of Rangers fans wanted Jags gone last season and the talk was giving the team over to Drury & Gomez….Quite ironic, eh?

Now us Rangers fans want gomez and drury shipped on the next jet blue flight out of JFK.

U know what I was wondering tonight during the game…..Does Sather actually watch the games live? In other words, where is he when the team is playing? Does he DVR the games and watch them during his free time?

  111. i watched the whole game tonight and i actually thought they played better defensively than in the last few games but i think they concentrated so much on stoppin ao n company from scoring that they let the game slip away. they dont get nearly enough chances and quality shots on the other teams goalie. theres maybe 2-3 a game. very boring n uninspired. only a few guys make it worth watchin n thats staal, doobs, prucha, cally, and zherdev. by the way, zherdev sucked bad tonight. but usually hes the only creative and fun one to watch when this crappy system isnt stifling him.

You dolt, they wont trade Ehroff for a guy that is a soft, wimp of a defensemen who gives the puck up every shift. Sather would have to throw in a 2nd round pick at least.

  113. yea liquid ya know i was kinda on board with lettin gomer n dru take over but obviously they arent what u build a team around. their more complementary to a jagr but yea man jags is missed by me. i dont care if he goes half speed he still outplays these 2 fools.i like dru n gomer, but yea theyve been a letdown and now we have hank to look up to to save this team fast. hes all we got left as far as a chance at goin anywhere this year

  114. Mike, I miss Jags as well…I used to look forward to hearing him talk in the post game interviews…He always had a way with words….On the flip side, I loathe hearing what comes out of Drury’s mouth…For $7MM a year, he should be skating through the boards for this team.

In regard to the game tonight, I think Renney preached a tight man coverage defensive game plan and look for opportunities when the Caps make a mistake. Unfortunately, and as u mentioned, this stifles the flow of the game on the offensive side.

  115. yea either way liquid, if we go full attack on them we probably lose 6-3 or 6-4. on the other hand id rather them get chances and score some goals because this team has a hard time doin that, so i think they should at least start the game off lookin to get 2 or 3 first before slowing the game down and basically trying not to lose instead of playing for the win. and even the caps announcer saidthat the teams that go far are the teams that score. u cant score 1 or 2 and try to hold down ovehkin and semin. and man green has got as many goals as dru n more than gomer n doobie. wtf????

  116. reginald dunlop on

jagr, shanahan, straka, avery……a lot of goals to give up with the HOPE that dawes, cally, z and naslund make up for it…….NOT WORKING……..TOO MUCH HOPE…..MAKE A DEAL SOON OR WILL BE LUCKY TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS………

  117. I post only about Hockey on this site the last three posts with my name were by bob. The guy has mental problems. I dunno why this clown is obessed with me but he is.

  118. reggie, id take shanny back in a heartbeat right now. hes got snarl to his game and so what if he aint fast. so far the speed on this team is not gettin us anything. he could be great playing half a season. and maybe his passion and leadership skills are being overlooked. remember when the sundin saga was comin to an end? thats when dru and rozy started playin better. if shanny was here i bet u they come out n play hard. im tired of mr drury n senor gomez. u cant shine shit and theres a heaping helping on this team

I never said that it was bob impersonating me. The guy is retarded.

  120. Am I the only person who is actually watching these games?
In the previous posts, Prucha is incomplete. blah blah blah.
Yeah, thats why he’s scored twice in two games.
Renney is doing everything he can to NOT have prucha in there.
I believe we need a coaching change.
    Our defense is horrible.
It’s getting to the point where I don’t wanna watch the games because either we blow a lead, and can’t score to save our lives.
Prucha has been the best player we’ve got lately.

PUT HIM ON THE FRIGGIN’ POWERPLAY.
    geezus.
the kids goals from his rookie season were almost ALL powerplay goals. He is great on the powerplay, and believe me, its not like our powerplay can get much worse.

    ALSO:
I just loved the fact that Renney put the best players out there for the last minute. Naslund, Gomez, Drury cause they are just lighten up the goalies nowadays…oh wait, THEY AREN’T DOING ANYTHING. They can barely hit the net when they shoot.

  121. thats what i mean. prucha already established himself and is a proven goal scorer.half the guys on the roster have yet to get even half of what prucha got his first season. so in my eyes, prucha should be getting more ice time and let the rest of the youngins earn it.

  123. Rangers took Korpikoski over Mike Green in 2004. Who the fugg does that scouting for us? Meanwhile, some peeps are already talking about Bobby Sags and that he may be a bust already.

  124. Renney years ago made veteran players accountable the last few years he cowtows to them. Renney doesn’t seem to like or believe in Prucha.

  125. Actually it was Montaya I believe. IIRC Green was drafted before Korpikoski. Imagine if they drafted Green they would have a top d pair in Staal-Green for the next 10-12 years at least.

  126. The real Graves9 , I figured it wasnt you who would call me a dolt. I don’t understand why people on here try to impersonate other posters.

  127. the caps announcers were even saying that prucha shouldve been playing a long time ago. they say the things that sam n joe n stan and all the rest of the asslickers wont

  128. In 2004, Rangers had 2 first round picks….they took Montbusta #6 overall and Korpi #19. The Caps selected M Green @ #29

  129. sags is a bust huh? wouldnt surprise me. even korpedo has been. i thought he could have a good year but of course nooo. why should any ranger draft ever be good

  130. All Hail King Henrik on

Aside from the shitty shorthanded goal against (12 against is a complete joke at this point) if this team consistently played the same defense in front of Henke the way they play in front Valli, they’d actually be a “good” team.

Add a goal-scoring winger, swap Potter for Kalinin, and maybe another move on D, and they’d be a semi-legitimate contender (would at least have the abiliity to make some noise in the playofs, especially if Lundqvist gets hot).

Sure, they’d be a 2-1, 1-0 team, but at least they’d win; Henke stops both of those goals if he’s playing in top form as he was the beginning of this season.

  131. Sam & Joe were real fuggin annoying tonight talking constantly about AO. Obviously AO is the best that the NHL has right now, but they go a little too far in regard to licking his ass on every thing he does…..Micheletti and his OCD was talking about how AO sits at the end of the bench with his ass half off of it and looking to get back on the ice.

I used to think that Sam & MSG were the gold standard for announcing a good game but it is getting a bit old how they try to be straight and down the middle as far as how they call the games. I dont want a chico resch homer type deek, but I am sorta digging the guy who calls the bruins games.

  132. I hope this post isn’t too late at night that no one reads it. Not to pat the collective wisdom of the bloggers on this site on the back too much and granted that the folks at MSG have to tow the party line, but it started to sound tonight like many on the MSG crew were frustrated by the Rangers play- and started making points that were mentioned here a while back.

Joe even called out Gomez for shooting from mid-ice on the powerplay. The post game guys stated the Rangers lacked urgency- heck, even Fischler- who I don’t think even knows much about how the game is played (yes, he knows guys from hockey’s history- but that’s not the same)- said Renney has stop changing the lines. And I forgot who said this on the broadcast- but someone finally called the team out and said (roughly) “why do they pass up shots out front, instead passing to the side / worse angles?”

For my part, I think the Rangers get dictated to way to much. They don’t have any discernible style and certainly shouldn’t be a “2 to 1″ type team- and they don’t even play that way in the first place. In fact, wasn’t all the buzz at the beginning of the season how we wanted to play like Pitt and Detroit by puck possession and O starting from mobile D-men? They are not overly defensive minded (Redden seems to take the five in the picture system to heart, but unfortunately he’s in the picture a lot standing right next to Hank after the other team has scored and covering absolutely no one).

Their offense lacks any consistency in its content or production. But I think guys like Z are being held back (I won’t even mention Prucha- you’ve all read it before).

Whoever mentioned they were going to tally when the Rangers passed up good shots etc.- please continue to do so….

    Im gay

Running out of things to say eh bob? I think you impersonating me suggests a homoerotic obession on your part.

  134. Dave Maloney imo is by far the best Ranger announcer. He calls it like it is and is never afraid to criticize players or question the coaching staff.

  135. All Hail King Henrik on

As terrible as our drafting has been…at least we’ve got what looks to be a steal in Grachev. At this point, I’m more excited at our 3rd round pick than our 1st( DZ did look good in camp, though).

I didn’t watch the Canada game tonight, but Grachev looked great vs. the Czechs the other night. His 5 on 3 shorthanded goal was a great display of his talents.

With the cap staying stagnant, we will probably be seeing him sooner rather than later. With the progress he’s made in just a short time with the NA style game, it wouldn’t be a stretch that he could make the team with a great camp next season. A BIG goal scoring power forward is something this team desperately needs. If not next year, definitely the following.

  136. True Blue, You hit the nail on the head. It is as obvious as the balls on a tall dog that the Rangers coaches are trying to take 3 styles of play (from previous Cup winners) and roll it into a ball and call it their game plan.

First u have the goalie backstop trap hockey of the devils from 1995+, the puck possession north south red wing hockey, and the pounding in your face hockey from the ducks a few years ago. The only problem is that aside from Henrik and Staalsy, this Rangers team could not emulate even the same team from 3 years ago that go blown out of the 1st round of playoffs vs the devils.

Renney is in way over his head. He is too methodical to the technical thinking of playing championship hockey. He would probably be good at fantasy hockey. But when it comes down to making in game decisions as well as handling the players on the team to line combos , the braniac BS will only get u so far.

  137. This is my name. You don’t even like Graves, i am a bigger fan, so i will use this name from now on. It’s only fair, so you’re gonna have to change your name. I know you have about 5 other names you post as, so you’ll have to use those. Sorry.

  141. “In regard to Dubinsky…did his offensive skills get abducted by aliens. He looks like a lost puppy on the ice now. WTF happened?”

it is called the Renney Factor or the Hyena Effect.

  142. This is a team that cannot make a single mistake without it costing them the game. Just one.

This team is going nowhere, and all of the postulating will not change that fact. Any other coach in this league could be behind the Ranger bench, and with this lineup would be an improvement on Renney. That’s because they don’t play his “system.”

Last summer when the player trades were announced I wrote that the Rangers would regret the signing of Kallinin. (Anyone who watched him on ice for Buffalo would have made that same statement…evidently Sather never watched him.)

This team not only will not make the playoffs, but they will not be in a good position to pick up on the drafts. ( Has anyone watched those two kids in the Jrs..Eberle ( who looks twelve) and Tavares? ONe or the other will probably go to the Isles.

That breakaway start was largely the result of Lundqvist, and now he’s reached his sound barrier. The mask is pulled away – this is the REAL Rangers.

  143. 1. I never wanted Jagr or Drury or Gomez
    2. I never thought of Gomez as a leader in any way.
    3. Do Gomez and Drury suck? or does the system suck? or did insane contracts that run all the way to retirement kill some of their drive and simply made them not care too much? Or is it all of the above?

  144. my mid season grades:

    A- Zherdev
    D Gomez
    D Drury
    B Naslund
    D Redden
    B Callahan
    B Dawes
    C- Betts
    D Sjostrom
    C- Orr
    C Fritsche
    B Prucha
    C- Kalinin
    B Mara
    B- Staal
    C Korpikoski
    B- Dubinsky
    B- Voros
    B- Girardi
    A- Potter
    C Rozsival
    C+ Lundqvist
    B Valiquette

Players with C- and lower I want to be gone.

  145. The myth of Betts being good on faceoffs is fading fast– he is 46.6% on the season

The myth of Betts being an amazing shot blocker is fading fast with only 22 blocked shots this season.

The myth of Sjostrom being anything better than Rico Fata is fading fast with his 4 points in 39 games, all legs and zero brains.

The myth of Hyena Renney being a good coach fades as soon as the goalie stops standing on his head.

  146. Its just amazing though isnt it? Its always the players fault that this team can not score goals.
3 years ago, Jagr goes bonkers, Prucha explodes out of nowhere, we still only finish at 14th (3.05G/G) in the NHL in offense. Clearly we dont have the players…

We add a 40 goal scorer from the previous year in Shanahan to help fix the problem.

so 2 years ago we had more or less the same team, added Shanahan, and our offense dropped from 14th in the NHL to 18th in the NHL (2.84G/G). Damn! I guess we still have too many round holes and square pegs! How about we have more or less the same team, subtract Nylander and add Chris Drury (a 37 goal scorer the year before) and Scott Gomez (a steady 60-75 point getter) and im sure that will bring in more offense right?

We drop from 18th in the NHL in offense to 25th (2.5 G/G).

Ok, it must all be Jagr and the Czech connections fault, you know because we have all these square pegs and round holes, so lets dismantle that team, get rid of Jagr, Shanahan, Straka, Avery, etc, and try a more or less completely different group of players. Lets put together a team that Tom Renney has more or less either drafted, or has been here since before they arrived (IE, he must have had some hand in picking what players he wants, but will have to deal with whatever players are there before he gets here)

So this year we go from 25th in the NHL to 26th in the NHL (2.5 G/G)

lots of variables, but the main constants are the coaching staff and the GM.

  147. Quote:
Semin’s not exactly known for fighting but this debut left people with plenty to talk about, especially his punches to Staal’s back at the end of the scrum which were described as everything from playing the bongos to the Energizer Bunny playing his drum.

Staal had two small scratches under his right eye from the encounter and here’s his account of the fight.

“I grabbed (Semin) and he didn’t have his tie down on, so when I grabbed him all his gear fell off. I tripped over it and was on the ice,” Staal said. Semin’s rapid punching that followed “was kind of weird. I’m not sure what that was and he scratched me some.”

David Steckel said Semin had “flawless technique” and added “he’s even a fighter at heart. He didn’t even strap down.”

    On the Rangers’ ineptitude:

    Quote:
“He just sees the ice so well,” Green said. “He wasn’t even looking at me and he passed it right on my tape….Usually (the back-door play) is not that wide open… Semin took advantage of it and made a great pass to myself. We don’t really get a chance to work on it too much because teams are so cautious of it but tonight it was wide open.”

    More on the Rangers’ ineptitude:

    Quote:
You may have noticed that Alex Ovechkin got quite a bit of penalty killing time tonight, 2:15 to be exact. Well that was in the Caps’ plan against the Rangers.

“We put both Alexes on the penalty kill,” Boudreau said. The Rangers have “given up now 12 short handed goals which is the most in the league…. So we thought if we can get some offensive guys out there a little bit more we might get an opportunity to get a goal.”

  148. Islanders Fan on

Well, it was a hockey night for this Islander fan. Watched both NY teams, paid close attention to the better one.

Wade Redden sucks. I mean, really, I have to be honest. For supposedly a number one defenseman with that contract, he needs a serious reality check. ****ing guy doesn’t hit, his passes are never on target and he is quite often out of position. I paid close attention to him in particular tonight because I felt he was on the end of some undeserved criticism. He is just unable to shoulder a large load, my .02 anyways.

Your team has talent, your team has goaltending, the ability to win is there. I have to say, however, that this system you guys play is just not a system your team should be playing. If collapsing around Lundqvist is the plan, fine, but there are multiple systems that can be played so that your offensive guns(quite a few) are able to create some havoc in the offensive zone. You almost get the feeling that your top 2 lines are harnessed by a long rope held by Tom Renney. They are afraid to make mistakes, and when you’re afraid to make mistakes your unable to play the game you know you can play. There is too much tension out there.. something needs to be done before 4th place becomes 8th place.

I still think your team will find a groove before all is lost, but I’ve got to say.. the elite team I swore was cup material and sure April hell for myself, is becoming a fading memory at this point.

  149. onecupin67years on

islander fan, I am a ranger fan and I never saw this team as cup material, too many soft over paid has been players, gm president and coach, they have to get a real hockey mind then start cleaning house.

  150. ISLANDERS FAN –

Why are these players afraid to make mistakes when there is zero accounting, from the top down in this organizaiton for poor performance. Kalamazoo is the worst D in the NHL, yet no accounting, Potter is just another Pock Hartford Shuttle redux; Redden has a contract and knowing he has no accountability to answer for, brings nothing to the game, night after night. Renney may be the worst “strategist” and most demoralizing juggler of player’s roles and the most moronic “mastermind” of PP ice tme anywhere, but his job is secure. Sather signed Gomez and Drury and Redden and Kalinin, and his response is no response, he does not publicly have to answer for anything – and the fans and media can go to hell if they don’t like it.

This is what we get when we support an organization which just wants the team to “make the playoffs” every year, to justify ticket prices being raised.

The on-ice losses piling up now are really organizational philosophical losses. This team is a lot closer to the Islanders right now, when it comes to mismangagement, than it is closer to the real competition in the division, on the ice.

  151. Can’t wait til we drop out of playoff contention,THEN MAYBE RENNEY WILL BE FIRED LIKE I’VE BEEN SAYING FOR OVER 2 SEASONS NOW.
FIRE HIM NOW— Then let the new guy make what ever moves he wants Sather lost this team long ago.

  152. There is absolutely nobody who wanted Renney fired longer than me.

I saw hyena through his human disguise way back when Prucha had his first training camp and pre-season in which he was simply stunning, yet the idiot healthy scratched him the first several games of that season, and then I knew this guy is a pure moron.

  153. bob – dawes, prucha, voros, dubi and potter are all too high. i mean how much did potter and prucha play – can;’t give those grades to players who barely played. and dubinsky has been worse than gomez and drury so his grade is way out of line.
