In case you missed it

Thanks to reader Robert for passing along this comprehensive video compilation of the historic events yesterday at Wrigley. Compelling stuff. Here’s hoping the Rangers are indeed on deck for next year’s game at Yankee Stadium.

In other news, Zipay stole my thunder with “his mid-season Rangers report card”:http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/hockey/rangers/blog/2009/01/the_soul_of_a_new_yearand_grad.html. He’s not far off from my own views, but I’ll chime in with some more complete thoughts later.

I’m thinking Boston and Montreal up at Fenway would be an ideal matchup followed by NYR and Boston at either Fenway or the new Yankee Stadium.

  2. According to Toronto radio heads…if Montreol gets another game outdoors before the Leafs…Ontario will begin secession proceedings…..

    Rangers VS Devils…

    At the Polo Grounds…

Ralph Branca and Bobby Thompson drop the pucks…

    NY dignataries in attendance:

    Rudy
    Nameth
    Simms
    Seifeld
    and any living Ramone

    Hey-Ho!
    Lets go!

  3. Having read Zippers grades i agree with most, although i think Hank, Zherdev, Naslund, Mara, Betts and Staal have been our best performers so far. Dawes has started to play up to his potential in the last few weeks, as have Korpedo and Girardi. Cally has been consistent with his effort but not so much his scoring, Orr has been OK, Vally has been good. Prucha needs a proper chance, but seems to be grabbing his opportunity based on the last couple of games.

Our problem is getting our other players: Dru, Gomez, Redden, Dubi, Voros, Roszi, Sjo performing consistently well and getting rid of Kalinin and Fritsche.

Renney is doing OK, but i would like to see a few stars benched as his faithful approach has not yet yielded rewards and Slats gets kudos for Z and Nas, but big black marks for Rissmiller & Kalinin. For me jury is still out on Roszi and Redden as players, but their contracts are handcuffing any involvement in trades or signings (Sundin).

All in all, we’re in a good position but maybe a couple of pieces short of a Stanley Pie.

If these outdoor games become an annual event they will lose their luster real fast.
Kings Vs Sharks in LA, fl vs tampa , ans so on , you can’t keep the new teams out if the games are making money,
but I don’t care to see this thing become an annual event because eventually all the teams will want their turn.
And what is the big deal anyway?

  5. I disagree onecup…I think an annual Winter Classic does alot for hockey, and the NHL. I’d like to see Mike DingleBerry replaced cause he’s just a moron but its nice to see our game on a national stage.
On another note I’d like to add that if our beloved New York Rangers are trying to be like the Redwings, we are so far from them its laughable.

I agree with Zipay. esp. on Staal and Callahan…who by the way should be referred to as O’Callahan. (see Jack O’Callahan)
    Can anyone guess why?

  6. onecupin67years on

I agree with the hallucintory thinking that the Rangers are a Detroit clone to be .
Stall is one of those players who always gets a free pass, for a highly touted player , he need to hit more , be more offensive and be nasty, he’s very cautious under the Renney regime, I’d like to see what he really has.

  7. Kaspar

If Nameth does the NYR Winter Classic do you think he will say to Darren Pang “Come here and gimma a kiss?” LOL

  8. It’s spelled NAMATH, it’s spelled STAAL, and the Polo Grounds were demolished, circa 1960. Looks like I am not the only one who enjoys watching “Twilight Zone” reruns.

  9. Take it easy Cake, its the New Year LOL We are all still feeling the effects of NYE LOL

Pang is a pang in the @ss. You would think they would have better ppl representing the NHL ;) Where was Messier? LOL

  10. Agreed Zip was VERY generous.

How is it that not one player gets and all out F for not showing up!? (Kalinen/Redden)

Although the argument could be made that if Kalinen didn’t show up he should get an A… we’d be a much better hockey club with him playing hookey instead of hockey.

MY first bad joke of the year! YAY

  11. Kaspar,

my post should be hooky then (not hookey).

    There’s a spellcheck for ya.

    Wanna dress for Kalinen?

  12. “Wanna dress for Kalinen?”

    Riche..
On my most hungover, homesick, battlescarred, gluesniffing day…

I could beat that waste of space hitting, shooting, skating ( well maybe not skating)

  13. thank God the world is coming round. Think there is any other coach in the NHL with the positive record the Rangers have who would get a C at mid-season? if that doesn’t tell you how little respect Renny commands (and deserves…) nothing will.

  14. “F” is too good a grade for Sather, Renney, and Kalinen. I give them a “TZ,” for “Twilight Zone.”

  15. From terry frei’s ESPN column (a kind of 2008 round-up)…

“A U.S. team’s broadcaster was allowed to sharply criticize his “own” team. Once. But many U.S. fans continued to believe they were getting objective, straight and uncensored views from “their” broadcasters”

  16. I’m going to say Zipay’s a little harsh on Lundqvist and generous to Naslund, Renney, and Drury.

How Drury doesn’t earn the same as Redden is beyond me. Both are as big a failures as the other and because Drury’s the mindless captain who settles for mediocrity, he should probably get an F. Renney should get a D-minus too. I think lumping guys like Sjoestrom and Voros into similar grades as Drury and Gomez is a huge disservice because they were never expected to be all-stars. Drury and Gomez are/were. So much for that…

  17. I just bought a pink Rangers jersey off the Rangers website. I cant believe this, i was supposed to buy a regular home Rangers jersey, but i clicked the wrong one. Unbelievable.

If anyone’s interested in buying a pink Rangers jersey, tell me. Ill sell it to you for $110.00. It’s a Large, and doesn’t have any stains on it.

Yeah well its Kalinin not Kalinen…so you fail too

    LMAO!

Cakewalk, before you start handing out spelling corrections, read what you’re typing, you idiot. Lol, wannabe smart ass.

  19. How come no grade for Renney????
That grade is a F-FOR FIRE RENNEY-
Cause if ihs grade is higher so is EVERYONE else.
    WITHOUT A DOUBT–FIRE RENNEY

  20. The Rangers seem a lot like the Mangini-Favre situation the Jets went through. Sure Mangini sucked and made some seriously terrible decisions, but Mangini wasn’t the one throwing 22 interceptions. Renney is not an effective coach for this team, and that so far is the understatement of the new year. But when you have so many bonehead plays going on, its obviously not just the coach. Like in the Islanders game, I don’t think Renney told Kalinin and Drury to skate on top of each other so Trent Hunter could take them both out with a single push. I totally agree that Renney should be canned, but just dumping him isn’t going to solve this team’s problems.

  21. onecupin67years on

I like how Zipay doo dah gave Hank a b -,w/o Hank we all where the Rangers would be, maybe Hank should pull a groin and let the star B+ goalie lead to team for a while.

  22. UpstateRanger on

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota Wild star Marian Gaborik will have surgery on his injured left hip on Monday and is expected to be out for about 10 weeks.

Gaborik’s injury is a “deficiency” in his hip that has caused his chronic left groin pain, the team said on Friday.

The last original member of the Wild has missed 30 of 36 games this season. Since the league lockout in 2005, the winger has missed 86 games because of upper-leg injuries.
Gaborik had a similar procedure on his right hip last summer, and then had what the team thought were more groin problems at the start of this year. He met on Dec. 24 with the same doctor who performed the right hip surgery and elected to have the procedure done on his left side. (AP)

  23. Bobby Thomson is an icon of mine. Dating myself, yes. That blundering D-man for the Rangers may not be an icon of mine. LOL. Happy New Year.

  24. Say no to Gaborik1 always injured. It would be funny next year if the Rangers could get him for like $2 million; THAT’d be worth a gamble hehe.

Sather has to get Komisarek. He’s great, and the perfect bruiser we need. He’ll stick up for his teammates. That is exactly what this team needs.

I wouldn’t mind signing Ozolinsch either, im sure he’ll do a better job than Rozsival, and Redden, and Kalinin.

  27. So, my girlfriend and I went to the Winter Classic on Thursday. Flew to Chicago just to go b/c it looked so cool last year. We wore our rangers jerseys for the game (me: Messier; her: Avery), and I can’t believe how much sh*t we got from d-bag Red Wings fans. Hawks fans were pretty cool and welcoming, but Wings fans: total d-bags. If I had a dollar for every time someone shouted: “F-you rangers!” or “Rangers?!? Are you guys lost?”, I’d be a rich man. I thought the atmosphere would be cooler–more like a celebration of the sport. Oh well. It was still a fun event though, and I did get a lot of Hawks fans who randomly came up to me to compliment me on the Messier jersey. Guess even if you hate the Rangers, you can’t argue with Mess. If the Rangers get the Classic next year at Yankee stadium, and someone shows up in a Wings jersey, I’m going to be merciless.

  29. Just checked out the ip address on the graves imposter indeed it’s bob. bob this is your last warning stop with the games or else I’m gonna have to ban you. I rather not do it but if you continue with the nonsense you’ll have to find a new place to call Renney a hyena and impersonate other posters.

  31. “impersonate other posters”

i think bob always wanted to be in show-business… but being cross-eyed with triangle-shaped head…… and car-wheel like legs made it impossible for bob to realize his dream of becoming “show-bob-boy”…

  32. Anybody watch the Islanders, Coyotes game? Doug Weight got his 1,000 career point. Good for him, he’s a good guy. Its a real shame Weight, along with Guerin are playing there. I would much rather have those two or one of the two over Chris Dreary.

  33. so honestly if we waive both redden and rosival in the off-season wouldnt it be like paying one only neither has to see the ice????
