So it goes without saying that this should be the night that the Devils finally shake loose of the Rangers recent stranglehold over them.
The stars are aligned for New Jersey, right? The Devils have won eight of nine. The Rangers, despite their squeaker in Atlanta, are still struggling. All of it points to a potential new chapter in this rivalry. Then again, the Rangers have always said their meetings with the Devils are the games in which they’re most able to pay attention to detail, and given the team’s “newfound success in driving to the net”:http://www.lohud.com/article/20081212/SPORTS01/812120368/-1/SPORTS, this game could be coming at the right time.
I don’t know. What I do know is—wait for the cliche, here it comes— they play the games for a reason.

Optional skate today at the Rock. My expectation is the lineup and the lines stay the same as Wednesday night, although Henrik Lundqvist will of course be back in net.

SAM and if they lose what’s the excuse? The NYR top to bottom can’t have it both ways, no one is accountable. The corporate culture needs an adjustment. There is no urgency, it’s like a retirement home. Let Drury & Gomez know they are going to get much more rope from the fans. It’s time for them to wake up or go somewhere else, and take Redden & Rozival with them.
I like sjo and dubi. For the same reasons Mako stated. To add to it, sjo is in a spot now that he’s been fighting for, really for the last 4+ years. He wants to be more than a 4th line forchecker, who doesn’t? And he plays a very responsible game on top of getting in deep and forechecking. Hopefully that strength along the boards and in the corners will pay off.
Staal – I’m looking foward to seeing Sjo with Dubi tonight. I didn’t get a chance to catch any of the last game besides the highlights. Sjo is a little too dynamic to be a fourth liner.
It seems that no matter what, whenever these two teams play eachother, the Rangers seem to get their act together. Hank locks into these rivalries, and the team seems to play with more jump and tend to be more physical against the Devs, or any divisional team for that matter. Has Clemenson been starting most of the recent Devils games? My guess is that the Rangers will make him look like a Vezina finalist tonight, however, I also belive the Rangers will squeeze out another tight win tonight. No OT, no shootout. This game will probably go down to the wire.
Kalinin will be -20 by the end of tonight.
Beer –
Yeah I defend Sjostrom all the time because the kid does have talent. Its just always burried on a bad line. Oh and he was on Phoenix, that isnt saying much (but he was a fan favorite there). He and Dubi are power skaters and make room for themselves WHEN they skate. If Renney does in fact keep them together, they could be good together.
We really need our STAR players to actually play like stars.
Gomez-has been really pretty good latley
Drury-needs to step it up and socre points, yea he does a lot of other things for us but he need to score or assist
Nausland- could step it up as well, Yes he is one of the better newbies but I expected more.
Redden-is a joke, when a rookie like Potter comes in and looks better than a veteran you really need to look at your game.
Zherdev- He needs to do something with his talent, there is so much there but he doesn’t follow through with goals.
I think all the other players have played like average players. Some of the top money guys really need to earn their paychecks. I have no idea what team will show up tonight, lets just hope it’s the defensive team that can score a few.

Redden came back after being injured and posted a +3 with 3 assists. If he plays like that for the rest of the season. You wont hear another peep out of me about him.
Redden has been very inconsistent. He was great the first few games, then disappeared, then came back with solid play, then messed up, then did well, then etc etc etc…
Overall I’m happy with Redden, I just wished he played a bit more sound defensively and actually GOT OPEN on the PP! He was signed to be a PP QB but I rarely see him get open for a quality shot (it’s always blocked).

With Kalinen on the ice it can be all but guaranteed that we wont get a shutout
I didn’t notice the Redden had some assist last game, well now if he can keep it up that would be good.
What do we have to do to get Zherduv to score??? I think he has done quite well for us but there is more there.
Kaspars girlfriend is big Senators fan…watched Redden for last few years and, though I was shocked at length of contract, I was one person who was all for him being here…
its hard to back up that feeling now, like Phalanx said, it was weak +3 the other night..to me he broke even during the game…
The most impressive part of Reddens game during Sens years was as a component of a dynamic PP..of course with that big three its easier; we have no one like any of them-no one. the other part of his game that was very good was his passing from near center ice to a breaking ( 2 man attack)...now lets be honest the rangers do not play that way…whether its the guys not doing it (like renney accused them of) or Renny likes 1-2-2 attack I cant say
What I can say is Ottawa basically chose between he and Chara and chose Redden..(laugh all you want)he was never flashy or conspicous with big hits on dee; more of a positional guy and even that was a mixed success, he made up for it by carrying/passing puck out of his own end very well and on the PP

I said if he plays like he did the game after his injury where he was a +3 and either way primary or secondary he was productive and was on the ice when a goal was scored. Would you rather him a -3? Come on. All I ask is that he not play as awful as he has been. So if he has a good night, then Im happy for the guy.
What are the chances that we will have the same lines tonight that we did on Wednesday? Seriously though, even if the lines are not our best potential combinations you just HAVE to keep them together…
For such a smart guy I just dont understand how Renney doesnt comprehend this simple fact of life. Think about work. When you start a new job at first things are a bit new and different, but over time you start to know what your coworkers are thinking, you even begin to know what they will likely say or do. New relationship, at first you are finding out things about each other good or bad, but eventually you start to know them, etc.

I feel like the issue with Zherdev is a mixture of a few things. Generally, I think hes played pretty damn well… especially defensively. I was worried about him being a defensive liability, but hes been solid for the most part.
In Columbus, besides Nash… he had no one to work with. So he had to ‘do it by himself’. When he came to the Rangers, he was still used to that.
That is why, early on, we saw his flashes of brilliance but then didnt know what to do with it and he wasnt using his teammates.
Then, right before the team went ‘downhill’ he started to ‘figure it out’ and it started clicking and he was looking amazing.
... but then the rest of the team forgot how to play. Because now we see his flashes of brilliance and see him looking for a teammate… but there is no-one there with him.
Z just needs to keep doing what hes doing… and as the team rebounds from its recent failure, he will put up some more points.

for the life of me I don’t see how you are happy with Reddens play…but, maybe I see it differently, a 6.5 million dollar man, who isn’t physical and plays with little or no urgency. I don’t doubt that the talent is there, I just have rarely seen it emerge this season.
i have no confidence in this team and based on the way they’ve been playing lately, i shouldn’t. unless weekes is in net, we’re going to make clemmensen look like the second coming of patrick roy.

We need a power forward that can score. Drury is not getting it done. Trade him to Minnesota, they are looking for something in exchange for Gaborik. I just don’t think Drury is going to live up to his contract.

I was going crazy.. I wish I had the card on me now or else I would recite the back of it to you all.. it said something like “this big defense has an all-star future a head of him” and i couldn’t stop laughing..

Last week when we beat the pens, everybody was going crazy on this forum and was predicting the rangers to beat the habs. I never found the time to post my thoughts before tht game but I “knew” tht the rangers would lose, bad. I was right. Almost the same thing with the atlanta game the other night, I knew it they would give a halfass effort and piss us all off, I was right. Tonight, I hope im wrong, I really do, but im calling it like this: 1st pd, devils up 2-0 .. 2nd pd, 3-0 and then 3-1 .. final score, 4-2 devils, seal it with an empty net. Remember this post!

Elias has played his best stretch since the ‘06 playoffs ditto for Gionta. Parise has become a top line two way forward. Clemmesen has been rather remarkable. I don’t have a good feeling about this one the Devs have a big time top line and Rolston is back plus Renney will play Kalinin more than usual to show everyone how much he believes in him.
Only two more hours and then I’m done with friggin’ school for a month and half.. then I can sit back, crack open a beer and watch the rangers destroy the devils.

Wow Rodents Rant was pretty intense, but honestly over the last 2 weeks or so I’m starting to agree.
I’ve had a few discussions with my brother in law Devils fan about the Rangers style of play. I always say its boring but at least they were winning games…but to be honest most games are pretty tough to watch…my brother in law is jealous because he’s all “defense first” and “I like winning games 2-1. I think it sucks! I’d rather see the Rangers loose a game 7-6 than 2-1…in fact my wife thinks that after the post lock out season the Rangers have plummeted in the excitement department and she won’t watch the games anymore.
I feel bad for Prucha…but I have to ask this question. What is Renney’s type of player? And if Dawes is a play maker we are F’ed !

I usually don’t read The Rodent. Mainly because you can just change the dates on his entries, they’re always the same.
But after reading that, it adds to something I’ve mentioned here and there, but never really brought to ‘full light’.
That is, that he (the rodent, amongst many followers here) 9 times out of 10, states/believes that it’s Renney’s full discretion of who is in the lineup. I can’t say with 100% certainty that that’s not the case. But allow me to introduce my theory.
Slats took an absolute fan (and media to a FAR lesser extent) beating after we had missed the 7th consecutive season. After that…slats became a ghost. Unless you’re on the 6th floor entrance of Tower A @ msg…you can catch him there entering the elevator up to his ‘perch’ before games.
And if his face wasn’t in the Media Guide, you’d never know Shoenfeld was even employed by the NYR.
A lot of the coaches that were shuffled through the home bench at msg through that 7 year span were…’knuckleheads’ if you will. Forcing Slats to step in from time to time as personel matters were discussed with the press. With the thought that said ‘knuckleheads’ couldn’t get the ‘PC’ answers to the media that he wanted.
Now, he’s got someone behind the bench, and though most don’t like it, can give the press an “answer” that IS (intentional) double-talk, or whatever you’d like to call it. But it’s been a growing trend in the NYR PR dept the last few years.
If it weren’t the head coach answering those questions, which its NOT in most cities, it’s my strong belief that there would be a lot less critics of Tom Renney. He’s in the position to not only to receive criticisms for on-ice/ behind the bench happenings, but personel issues as well. Whether it’s by choice or job-description, it doesn’t really matter who’s relaying the message.
If anyone follows other teams closesly enough, I’ll use OTT as an example. I see Melnyk quoted as often as I do Murray or I DID Paddock (but a little more often now with Hartsburg). So there are different methods of communication throughout the league. I haven’t really seen another organization that utilizes their head coach so much as a media liason as we do.
And I think that has a lot of bearing on the ‘heat’ that he faces for personel decisions…to be clear about this.
Sure, that’s a defense of Renney. But not from a coaching perspective. From a “get your head out of your ass and think for yourself fans” perspective.

Ive stopped at the one on 95 a few times on my way home from New England Dragway in Epping, NH.
