    re: Renney

At the same time no-one on here (myself included) praised Renney for having Zherdev out there down one against Pitt in the last minute… or Nylander against Boston or Sjoestrom (a fourth liner… who’s line was arguably the best that night) out there against Ottawa in the third period. The last one being a move most people would chastise… “WHY would Renney have that 4th line out there down 1 in the 3rd!!!?”

It’s a team effort… they all win or lose.

    Including the coach.

Gomez must be borrowing the no-contact jersey from Redden as I haven’t seen that guy throw one decent body check all season.

  5. Adam V

Good one, Rob L. I think we can all agree that Redden has been a huge disappointment so far. Without even looking at the stats, but just watching the games, I’m not sure what he’s added to warrant that type of contract.

  6. Pavel

Rob, that reminds me of something.

I was talking to a few Ottawa fans last year who were basically saying “OMG I can’t wait until the Rangers overpay for Redden in the summer.”.. lol

Anyway, I asked them what they didn’t like about him and they said the following:
1.) Inconsistent defending and glaring mistakes since Chara left
    2.) Hesitates to shoot
    3.) Doesn’t hit
4.) If the other team hits him all game he starts playing scared and is rendered even more useless

Now, I don’t mind Redden. I think the contract is 2 years too long and 3m too much per year, but what’s done is done. I’d take him over Rozsival any day.

This team needs to acquire a 7th d-man immediately.. even if he’s just going to be benched. While Girardi and Kalinin have their share of mistakes, they have been far more consistent than Rozsival.. he should be benched a couple games and get a message.

Didn’t he play injured last year? He started out the 07/08 season very solid.. was a points leader and sound defensively.. then he started playing like crap in January.. which we learned was due to a hip injury? The guy is obviously still hurt or was just hoping for a contract year in the first 30 games of the 07/08 season.

Whenever this team loses, it’s because of the SAME ailments:
    1.) SHG
2.) aggressive forechecking leading to defensive blunders
    3.) NO PP
4.) Not trying until there is 5 min left in the third
5.) Betts’ line is on the ice when it should be anyone who can score – anyone who can center – Zherdev.

“Gomez must be borrowing the no-contact jersey from Redden as I haven’t seen that guy throw one decent body check all season.”

    OUCH!

The 6.5 million dollar poke-checking defenseman who can barely QB a powerplay.

6 years of this. And the salary cap isn’t likely to rise.

  8. Rob L.

It appears as if the Roszival and Redden contracts were both bad signings. I’m not willing to write both guys off completely but they seem tentative on both ends of the ice.
Given Roszivals play so far I would have rather the Rangers gone out and traded for McCabe. At least for his bad defensive play McCabe would have helped this god awful powerplay. He’s putting up points with the Panthers. With Roszival you get bad play on both ends.

  9. Pavel

I’m starting to think we should’ve signed Streit instead of Rozsival (or Redden).

    Streit has 4g/8a in 18 games and a -2.

Rozsival has 2g/7a in 22 games and is a MINUS 9!

Redden has 2g/7a in 22 games and is a 0.

  10. Rob L.

...and Streit would have been much cheaper than Redden…

  11. Brandon

I think Wade has played much better of late, save for a bad outing against Van. Is he worth the 6.5? Definitely not yet, but he didn’t create the contract, he just signed it.

If I give him a clean slate and say would I rather have him or Christian Back and Marek Malik, I’m taking Redden. While less physical than Tuytin, he’s a much better passer.

I think he’ll get more comfortable and improve as the season goes on.

He’ll never max out the 6.5, so you’re wasting your time hoping for him to.

  12. what the HECK

    Pavel…
2 great posts in a row on this blog. That is a rarity. I wholeheartedly agree with both of your statements.

    Sam,
I dont really understand your live chat yesterday. You kept saying that the Rangers shouldn’t blame Lundqvist because he is getting bombarded with opportunities and shots from in close. Then you go ahead and say that Redden and Rozsival and Kalinin are great defensemen but make too much money. You say that they deserve to be on this team and they are not the reason for the mistakes. Whats the reason then? Girardi, Mara, and Staal? I’m pretty sure they have been the most solid D-men. I just don’t like the fact that you are just making sure nothing is said to hurt one party or the other. Is the D solid or crappy?

  13. Brandon

    Pavel,

Do you consider this an ailment?

“2.) aggressive forechecking leading to defensive blunders”

I’ll risk that any day of the week. An aggressive forecheck leads to entirely more scoring for than it does against.

  14. Pavel

Oh and given the tanking economy, thanks to Comrade Hussein scaring investors, driving businesses overseas and rapidly increasing unemployment, the cap will either not go up, or it will go down.

Say goodbye to one of Dawes, Cally, Dubi, Zherdev, and possibly more.

  15. Pavel

Brandon, I meant that any time we play a team that has an aggressive forecheck, they exploit our defense and end up scoring with their 3rd and 4th liners.

Our forecheck needs to be more aggressive.

  16. Brandon

Oh ok. I misread it. I thought you meant our forecheck was too agressive, which lead to transitional turnovers, etc.

    In that case, agreed.

Gomez has played 10 games with a stress fracture. I hope they will make sure he’s completely healed before they let him play. If Gomez can not fly up & down the ice he is of no value. The season is too young to have him finish it without being healthy, or in & out of the lineup & under performing the whole time.
On another note, we’ve been hanging Hank out to dry all year with far too many odd-man rushes, breakaways, & uncovered men in the crease & the slot in this alleged “defensive” system we employ. How can we possibly do any worse by employing a more aggressive forechecking style with the potential to force mistakes & score more goals & take the pressure off playing in our own end. We are very good & even dominant when we play with urgency & forecheck, & pretty much suck when we don’t. That is what has fueled our comebacks all year. We are not using the speed & players we have to our best advantage, IMO.

  18. Pavel

Dubi has been awful since I bought his jersey. Damn superstitions!

  19. Nasty 1

Sam, I just finished watching the live chat. I thought you made a lot of good points. I have a question that is non hockey related. What kind of watch are you wearing? I can’t tell if it is an Oris Frank Sinatra edition.
Yeah yeah, I know this is a hockey blog, but I am a huge watch collector and am just curious.

    “Lighten up house (francis)”

Nice one Jay. “I don’t like nobody touchin ME, or my stuff. Any’a you …..”

Staal – reminds me of something that happened a few years back. I went to VT (kaspar..holla!) with a group of freinds. Actually it was during the olympics and the dude that owned the house had msg and was a huge ranger fan. Anyway, there was a devils fan on the trip. There was a huge buck head mounted above the front door, and this jackoff decided to put a devils hat on it as we were leaving. So the next time the owner went to the house, the head had fallen off the wall and broke one side of the antlers off. Make of it what you will.

  22. Jay

I’m starting to feel like the win/loss record early in the season was due to a schedule that included some weak teams. This MAY have provided a sense of security that was unjustified.

I still think (as many have said) that this team is way better than its record and way better than they played against NYI, OTT, VAN…

So the question is, does this team need to assess and re-define their identity and if so – how should they do that?

  23. noonan

“Oh and given the tanking economy, thanks to Comrade Hussein scaring investors, driving businesses overseas and rapidly increasing unemployment, the cap will either not go up, or it will go down.”

Hey now. Taxing bussinesses for being successful and capital gains in the midst of the recession = GREAT IDEA TO STIMULATE ECONOMY!

  24. noonan

Isn’t it crazy our best defenseman are Staal, Mara, and Girardi. How are we going to re-sign them with Rosi and Redden making that much loot? HOW!?

  25. True Fans Bleed RW&B

Oh, one of my favorite posts in awhile:
“I’m starting to feel like the win/loss record early in the season was due to a schedule that included some weak teams. This MAY have provided a sense of security that was unjustified.” ...and so, although this reader is SLOW, he seems to be getting it!

But then…”I still think (as many have said) that this team is way better than its record and way better than they played against NYI, OTT, VAN…”
...And I realize he’s just another one.

The “team” is 14-6-2. The “team” isn’t actually that good, Lundqvist is!!! 14-6-2 is awesome, too bad it was won on smoke and mirrors and a Swedish prince…this team’s problems stem from terrible defensive coverage (which isn’t new, it’s been there since 2 years ago). Now the problem extends to Renney’s mismanagement of playes including over-playing Rozsival (when he clearly needs a breather) and alienating Zherdev and Dubinsky.

I hope the Rangers tank it for about 10 games…Renney gets fired…and then someone comes in who actually understands his players (and who doesn’t give a sh!t where he “has” the veterans) so this team can really work hard every night.

I’m sick of seeing Colton Orr, Shjoe, Callahan, and Betts as the 4 hardest working players on this team. I’m sick of seeing Paul Mara and Marc Staal as the only defense that aren’t afraid to receive or offer a body check. Time for Renney to hold EVERYONE accountable, not just the under-25s.

  26. Rob L.

True Fans….remember when Keenan sat Leetch and Kovalev during the Devils series in 94. I don’t think Renney has the balls to sit the high profile guys.

  27. Speed Ranger

Noonan – how about trade Rozy??? That would free up a little space, provided someone will take him…
