Update, 7:30 a.m.: Zpay reports from the morning skate that “Petr Prucha will play after all”:http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/hockey/rangers/blog/. The right move in my eyes. It sounds like Dan Fritsche, Patrick Rissmiller and Fred Sjostrom will be the scratches.
Earlier: And just like that the 2008-09 season is upon us. I would jump up and scream but it’s 5 o’clock in the morning and people are still sleeping.
Regardless, I’m excited, as I’m sure you are as well. We’ll be doing live updates off of Game 1, so come back before noon for more.
In the meantime, here’s my Rangers season preview “looking at the team as it begins the post-Jagr era.”:http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081004/SPORTS01/810040378/-1/SPORTS&referrer=NEWSFRONTCAROUSEL
One of the story’s main points is that for all of the Rangers’ relative success since the lockout, it’s never been clear who deserves the most credit for the team’s resurgence. Some will say it’s Henrik Lundqvist. Some will say Tom Renney. Others Jaromir Jagr. If nothing else, this season might offer a clearer picture.
Finally, here’s Larry Brooks pointedly “taking the Rangers to task for possibly sitting Petr Prucha in his homeland”:http://www.nypost.com/seven/10042008/sports/rangers/prucha_snub_may_mar_rangers_opener_132034.htm. I don’t get it, either, and it strikes me as contrary to Tom Renney’s nature.
Yes, these are four valuable points this weekend, and at season’s end, it may come down to that. But really, is a spot on the fourth line for Prucha going to make that much of a difference?
