Nolan out as Islanders coach

July
14

Don’t know the whole story yet, but it’s no secret there was friction between Ted Nolan and GM Garth Snow last year. Here’s the official release:

TED NOLAN WILL NOT RETURN AS ISLANDERS HEAD COACH IN 2008-09

Snow to Begin Search for New Head Coach Immediately

(July 14, 2008 – Long Island, NY) New York Islanders General Manager Garth Snow announced today that Ted Nolan will not return next season as the team’s head coach. Nolan had one season remaining on his contract.

“Ted has helped us achieve some success over the last two seasons, however it has become clear that we have philosophical differences and have decided together to part ways,” said Snow. “Since last season and continuing into the summer, I have realized we do not share the same philosophies. I would like to thank Ted for his two years with the team and wish him the best.

“I have a list of several qualified candidates. After a thorough process, we will hire the very best coach to lead the Islanders on the ice.”

Added Nolan: “While I am disappointed I will not be coaching the Islanders next season, there have been philosophical differences and we’ve agreed it’s a good time for me to move on. I want to thank the Islanders organization for giving me a chance to coach in the NHL again. I have tremendous respect for what the team is trying to do and I wish them well.”

Snow will be available to the media at 2:00 PM at the Nassau Coliseum. Media should use the NY Islanders Executive Offices entrance on the west side of the building.

    1st!!!!!!!

Ahh…the west side of the building. I’ve been going to the east side.

  3. Brandon

Ted Nolan was the best thing to happen to the Islanders since they got rid of the “fishstick” jerseys. I guess his philosophy wasn’t in line with Snow’s, which apparently is to sign as many old players as possible and let all the young ones go.

    What a bizarre organization.

I would say the Islanders actually over achieved the last two years with Nolan at the helm.

I’ll be absolutely shocked if they don’t finish in the basement next season. They could be the worst team in the East.

  4. RangerFan

that team is such a mess… just in the last year or two they’ve had some crazy stuff going on

The whole Neil Smith fiasco, Lafontaine quitting an honorary position, Simon trying to kill people, Wang making the backup goalie the GM, trading down down down down at the draft over and over and now this? who is going to take that coaching job now? Their fans must be fed up by now

not to mention their team’s biggest signing was Doug Weight who’s been useless for about 3 year running now

  5. ORR...The Pop Sensation Known As KOlton Douglas Orr !! (He Strikes Back !! Just Like In The Movies) !!!

    Yeah !!!

I hate that stupid son on a beach.

Every time he called Hollweg classless, but didn’t have the balls to call Simon classless. What an asshole. Im glad i don’t have to see his stupid ugly face 6 or 8 times a year.

Hopefully the Kings pass on him, and sign Torts. I need to see Torts flip out every season, its magical. I wish he was with Nyr again, but eh.

Anyway, when the frack are the new Rangers gonna get introduced. It seems like Campbell was the only new player to get introduced so far. Whats the wait for ?

Stupid MSGNY keeps having the pathetic Knicks, every day, i want Rangers. I don’t wanna see a bunch of losers like the Knicks.

There biggest signing was Mark Streit. Thats a decent signing. Now they have a PP D man that can hit the net, unlike Bergeron.

They suck, but trading down was smart. If they wanted someone who wasn’t getting picked by the next teamm, you mine as well trade down and get 4th, or 5th round picks from other teams.

They still suck, and i hate them, and Mike Comrie, and those morons who do jack sheet for Team USA, DiPietro, and Guerin.

    They have fans?

  8. Kirill

Teddy probably screwed Garth’s wife. lol!

  9. Agravaine

    wizard,

yea they do, but I’m trying to convert some of them….

I hear differnet things. DId Nolan want young guys or Snow, becuase some say Nolan would like a young team, and hten others say Nolan po’d Snow by playing Satan instead of someone younger… which philosophy was whose?

  10. donsausage

don’t forget the 35 yr dipietro deal

  11. Ethan

Man, they must really want John Tavares.

  12. Rob

Except when Tavares gets chosen by the fishsticks I bet u he goes over to the CHL.

  13. Rob

No one wants to play for a mickey mouse GM and a wacko owner, especially in that beat up place out in LI.

  14. Beer Me!

Oh man…that division is theirs to lose…

  15. Salty SMILES

Wow, I didn’t realize NYI had bad blood with Nolan. What idiots, Brandon simply nailed it.
Nolan was the best thing to happen to that organization in a very, very, very long time. Wow, they are more done than ever.

  16. Beer Me!

Has NYI become the front-runners in the Tavares Sweepstakes?

  17. The Baumer

I am so happy that the Isle fired Nolan. Their organization takes a step back, and that douche is unemployed. The only thing that could make this whole situation better is if Hasek gets some Czech gangsters to blow up the Nassau Mausoleum while Nolan is leaving and the Isles conference is happening..

  18. True Fans Bleed RW&B

    blow up the Nassau Mausoleum
    ...........

Isn’t time taking care of this already?

  19. ORR...The Pop Sensation Known As KOlton Douglas Orr !! (He Strikes Back !! Just Like In The Movies) !!!

Enough of this BS already. The NHL needs to move these freaks out of Ny already. Call them the Long Island Islanders, im sick of sharing a city with 2 reject teams. One with retards who run there team, and another team who doesn’t have any fans.

Get NJD to Las Vegas, and NYI to Kansas City.

  20. New Newman

My gut tells me there is something way more significant to come out of this story. Like people have supposed already here about him shagging someone’s wife or something. Isn’t Nolan a recovering alcoholic too? Got to be more to this story….

Either way, we need some new Ranger news…..

Sam have you had any contact at all with the HBO line? Wondering if they are sweating at all, working harder this offseason, or spending their time in the bar, given their murky futures….

  21. LI Joe

Beer me – they have good competition. Toronto, Atl, Fla, LA to name a few. never want the Isles to be that bad – about 10 from the bottom is just right. I definitely don’t want future great players going there.

  22. Beer Me!

    I hear that Joe.

Zipay says the regular season sched is coming out on wed or thurs.

  23. onecupin67years

Awful organization ,what does Bettman care as long the team doesn’t violate any NHL rules, the NHL doesn’t care about the owners money or a franchises success unless your MARIO.

  24. Staal Wart

Nothing makes me happier other than seeing the Islanders continue to maker fools of themselves…
How bout everything they gave up to get Smyth in a fishsticks uni.?

  25. Doodie Machetto

The Islanders definitely should be contracted.

I think 4 teams should be contracted immediately, with 2 put on probation. This is based on how the organization is run, and by the fan support

    1) Islanders
    2) Florida
    3) Columbus
    4) Phoenix
    5) Atlanta (probation)
    6) St. Louis (probation – contract them immediately if the brewery closes since the whole city will go bankrupt)

  26. Doodie Machetto

Actually, swap Columbus and Atlanta. Columbus finally seems to be headed in the right direction ever since they fired Maclean as GMnd brought in Hitchcock to coach.

Atlanta meanwhile is just headed down the toilet.

  27. Rucchin

    Classless move by Snow.

  28. Cliff

Hope they didn’t sign Tortorella. He just might turn the fishsticks around.

  29. Chris

Hollywood to Leafs for Pitts 5th in 2009

  31. Doodie Machetto

    GOOD BYE HOLLWEG!!!!

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  32. Jonny D

I was just about to say, Hollweg is gone. We got a crap pick out of it, but who cares.

  33. Mike D

Hollweg just traded to the Leafs for a draft pick

  34. ORR...The Pop Sensation Known As KOlton Douglas Orr !! (He Strikes Back !! Just Like In The Movies) !!!

    Oh perfect we traded Hollweg.

Great job Slats, you could have put him in Hartford, but nooo, now he’s gonna get a shot at trying to kill one of the blueshirts !! Damn him.

Anyway, on a serious note, im glad to see him gone. He screwed us in game 3, after Jags brought us back to life. I hated him before that, along with all those times he put us down 5 mins cause he couldn’t swallow his pride.

Lol, Leafs trying to replace Tucker ?? You got someone who looks, and drinks like him. Lol, idiots they are.

I hope Betts is next to get dumped. Put Fritsche on 4th line center duty, along with Voros, and Orr.

    BTW

Anybody think Jamtin will make the team, someone said the other day that he cant go to Hartford without going on waviers or something. Any truth to that ?

  35. LI Joe

    very very good news

  36. eric

thank god hes gone. he screwed us in game 3. want orr next

  37. Derf

    hollweg gone…

listen yes he was a very energetic skater… and a very good hitter…

but the bottom line is like avery & kasper – penalties called % goes up due to the name on the back of the jersey..

and there are lots of guys who are “energetic” and can skate fast that can score more than 2 goals a year…

a good move in my eyes.

  38. Brandon

Hollweg is not Betts so don’t group the two together Orr. If you don’t see Betts’ value, then you probably don’t see much of what’s going on out there at all.

  39. Staal Wart

Hollywood is dancing to Toronto…bringin the show on the road if you will.

  40. Staal Wart

We have officially upgraded our 4th line!!!

  41. Staal Wart

    eric July 14th, 2008 at 5:20 pm

thank god hes gone. he screwed us in game 3. want orr next

why would you trade Orr? He is the only player left on the team who’ll drop the mitts…Who do you propose to put on the ice after Hollwegg railroads Gomez into the boards from behind? Don’t forget this team is still pretty soft. And Orr was definitely one of the most improved players last season…

  42. CCCP

Reney out to coach isles… Ted is in to coach rangers… lol

  43. Chief Raving Madd

White Man fires great coalh Nolan, after he takes loser team to playoffs. Chief say Snow All Wet.

  44. tomg

I just heard on the WFAN that the rangers signed fritche, no word on the length or money of the contract.

  45. tomg

I found the link to the signing.
