News and insight about the New York Rangers

Jagr dragging his feet

July
3

Update, 3:30 p.m.: Couple more things brewing, according to the Rangers, and there will be another conference call at 4:30. I’ll check in then.

Update, 2:33 p.m.: Brisson responded in an e-mail that Jagr has not been presented with a deadline from the Rangers.

Earlier: The plot thickens….sort of.

According to Pat Brisson, No. 68’s agent, Jaromir Jagr will take his time reviewing his options for next season. The TSN reports confirms what we already know, that the Rangers, Edmonton, and Pittsburgh all in the running for the Big Fella, with the only known offer a one year, $7 million contract from Edmonton.

This report conflicts at least a little with the notion that the Rangers have presented Jagr with some sort of deadline to make his decision on their offer, something Glen Sather hinted at last night when he said he expected to hear from the captain at least by today. But a Rangers spokesman said he is unaware of any deadline.

Personally, I’m torn on this since I have a long-planned family barbecue tonight that I would like to be able to sneak out to for a few hours. So in other words, my hope is that there are no earth-shattering developments between the hours of say, 4 and 7. And if there is, well, that’s why they invented cell phones and wireless internet.

    Satan to Penguins.

  2. bob

Do we really want a player like Jagr who sulks and takes games off around Zherdev? Doesn’t sound like a great idea. Perhaps that is what Sather is thinking as well.

  3. Doodie Machetto

Enjoy your BBQ. Must be a welcome change from all of the sandwiches!

  4. Todd

Do we really want a player in Jagr who sulks and takes games off around Zherdev? Might not be a good idea.

  5. Doom and Gloom

That’s because nobody wants jagr, jags you helped turn the rangers around and I thank you but it is time to go. I know you thought you would get big offers to combat sather’s offer but it isn’t going to happen. Go to russia and be happy.

  6. CML

    Penguins aqquired Satan and Fedotenko.

    Satan 3.5 mill
    Fedotenko 2.25 mill

I think it would have been so funny to see Satan on the Devils. Seriously.

  7. Blue Face

Sam, please be careful. I can just see you turning the ribs on an open fire while your phone rings and you learn the Rangers sign Malik and Kasparitus.

  8. Doodie Machetto

Edmonton stands no chance of signing him. The only thing that is really keeping him tied to NY (and by proxy, the NHL) is his girlfriend. Pittsburgh is close enough, location wise, that they stand a chance. But Edmonton? No way. Their only chance would be if they offered him the 2 year deal he wants.

I don’t expect him to sign with any of these teams. He will either sign with Omsk or go to another team that hasn’t already made him an offer.

  9. hockeymanrangers

Ok it’s official he just want’s to drive us hockey fans crazier than we already are. You wonder if Sather will get the craps of this and just sign someone else. Ok, if there is any one else???

  10. Matt

I would have defiantly bought a Satan-Devils jersey.

  11. Matt

I say sign jagr, then trade him to Dallas for Avery lol.

  12. Doodie Machetto

“I think it would have been so funny to see Satan on the Devils.”

I’ve been saying that since he was in Buffalo. He came really close at one point, too.

I wonder what Fedotenko’s contract is. He had a surprisingly good season base, even though he was GROSSLY overpaid based on his season before that. I imagine the contract value will be fairly similar, close to 3 million.

But I think both of these signings kind of say that the Penguins are passing on Jagr.

  13. Doodie Machetto

Nevermind my bit about Fedotenko’s contract. I’m an idiot. 2.25 million for him is actually a really good deal. His numbers are similar to Avery’s, and avery got almost 4. Granted Avery has more intangibles, but not 1.5 million worth.

  14. Jonny D

    REPOST:

“With jagr and Sundin “deciding” there future, Sather better give Shanny a call and tell him to come back.”

Dear god no, please no. haha. I love Shanny but we’re trying to get faster, not as slow as a tortoise.

And guys, not all FAs will be signed immediately. Or people being traded either. We have plenty of time to make a deal (until September). So relax if Sather doesn’t do anything yet.

  15. 22figure8

    Jagr dragging his feet….

What does he think, it’s the middle of the regular season?

    Satan should wear #66.

  16. blurt

If Jagr is willing to go to Siberia he’s probably also willing to go to Edm. Hemsky would probably like that, too.

I think he ends up there and with a huge chip on his shoulder he makes everybody remember the old Jagr. For at least 20 games per year.

  17. The Heterodox Economist

    Also repost:

    Dear Mr. Sather,

I think it’s quite silly that the two sides are basically off by 1.5 mil per year. Mr. Sather, are you aware of the current US inflation rate and the short-term prospectus for ‘09? Are you also aware of the weak dollar that is eroding the real value of these players salaries vis-a-vis the Euro, CSD, and the Russian Rouble?

Of course you do, or else you wouldn’t have signed Wade Redden for 6.5 million per year, or Rozy at 5 million. From Jagr’s 07-08 salary of 8.4 million (? not 100% sure), try deducting exactly 4.18%, which is the official US inflation rate derived from April’s Consumer Price Index (CPI). It comes to $8,048,880. Now you tell me Mr. Sather, has Jagr digressed enough that he should eat up the cost of inflation (nevermind the Euro/USD exchange rate, or the grossly understated ‘official’ rate of inflation) and take a wage cut of another 1.5 million while at it?

It doesn’t sound like you want him back, sir; are you worried that Jagr’s reign of 70 points-plus statistics are a thing of the past? Are you worried that you have stripped Jagr of all his Czech buddies and so would not arrive to that consistent result we witnessed in the past two years?

Whatever that’s irking you, you better make decisions fast sir. Sit on your hand complaining ala Brian Burke and all it does is reveal what a buffoon you’ve become. Burke still thinks the Oilers are the culprit of these sudden ‘wage-pulls’ when clearly, all signals point toward something else: the real economy and exchange rates. I suppose in Burke’s ideal world, Edmonton will never have enough revenues and profits and therefore should never spend their money to attract a player they like, and should instead pile up on spare parts that big cities like New York dump when convenient. Clearly, he’s not aware how well Alberta is doing lately with their oil pumps.

This is a new world sir. I suggest you snap to action because if you signal that Jagr is not worth the price, you better also have a good plan B.

    Sincerely,

    The Heterodox Economist

PS if that difference of 1.5 million goes straight to Rozy’s new pay, you may have already bust.

  18. noonan

DO YOUR JOB AND REPORT, SAM! I’M HERE TIL 330 TODAY BUT WHAT GIVES I WANT TO CHECK THE INTERNETS

  19. Doodie Machetto

Jonny, while that may be true, all of the premier offensive talent on the FA market is gone.

Here are a few FAs left for everyone to discuss:

    1) Pavol Demitra
    2) Jason Williams
    3) Dmitri Kalinin

All three have injury trouble, but great upside (especially Williams). Thoughts?

  20. bob

I think economist needs to get a life. I read one line and then decided that post was a waste of time.

  21. Jonny D

Williams is a center who could play wing. He played great in Chicago last year so I’d love to have him as long as we have the right guys just based on his potential. Demitra I think is going to the Nucks but thats not confirmed yet, and Kalinin is nice on the backline for the right price. However he doesn’t help in the sense of being a physical presence on the back line.

  22. The Heterodox Economist

    Bob,

That’s great; as long as you’re willing to play the nanny role reporting about Jagr’s emotions and sulkiness and such, I’ll stick to my job of economic analysis, thanks.

  23. vogs

    Avery

“I woke up this morning and I had a new team and I have to think about that now and not why they didn’t want me back in New York.”

He is so full of it… Rangers didn’t want him back, HA! No Sean, not at $4 million per.

Don’t pee down my back and tell me it’s raining.

Ya know, some honesty every now and then woudl go a long way. If a player said to me, “Hey, I wanted a certain amount of money and the Rangers didn’t feel I was worth that so I went to where I felt I was wanted and where they were willing to pay what I thought I was worth.”

Instead of this Rangers didn’t want me back, crap.

  24. joejoe315

Marc Andre Fleury 7 years 35 mil

  25. CML

The Satan and Fedotenko contracts were both only one year contracts.

  26. joejoe315

    Satan, Fedotenko to Penguins

  27. donsausage

    i wouldn’t have minded satan for that money..he’s a sniper..had a down yr..and the isles lick

  28. Doodie Machetto

Kukla’s corner reporting the lightning have asked Boyle to waive his NTC.

I imagine San Jose will be the destination.

  29. CML

Wow is TSN slow, I called the Penguins signing over an hour before TSN posted it. I guess it’s an off day for everyone.

  30. Cooler

    Dr. Mr. Homodox Economist,

Your nonsense posts are too long. You are making me scroll down too much on my computer. Also, stop crunching numbers and get laid.

    Sincerely,

    Someone a whole lot cooler

  31. Blue404Seats

    CML,

    what site do you use?

  32. joejoe315

tsn is down i cant get on

  33. The Heterodox Economist

Oh, I’m so sorry that I couldn’t care enough about your computer and its scrolling problems; hurts the old wrists and eyes eh?

Don’t let that pain get to your head now with numbers and such.

  34. Doodie Machetto

Trading Boyle to clear his salary is the biggest admission that they f-ed up in their FA spending. They are probably going to do a 3 dimes for a quarter deal, so they can get two defensemen to round out their mediocre defense corps.

Maybe if they had signed a defenseman instead of every forward they could get their hands on, this wouldn’t have been a problem. OOPS!

  35. CML

RDS.CA … but I put it through Babel translation since I can’t read French.

  36. Rif

    sam,

is there any talk of the rangers giving pavol demitra an offer?

  37. Doodie Machetto

Hale to the ‘Yotes. Not really a big signing for Donny.

  38. CML

Penguins had also resigned Fluery, I forgot to mention that, even though that news isn’t tha big of a deal.

  39. DB Cooper

  41. donsausage

espn really is a hackshow.. what a joke.. and economist..take your slide rule outta yo ass

  42. CML

No DB COOPER, notice the pictures are different? The top one is Kristian Huselius. The name written is wrong.

  43. mookie

doodie- here’s the tampa article kukla quotes about Boyle’s NTC:

    http://blogs.tampabay.com/lightning/2008/07/lightning-asks.html

  44. DB Cooper

Yeah CML..i was aware of that when I posted it. I didn’t really think there were 2 doug weights..That was the joke.

  45. MikeyNJ

    So Straka is gone -DONE

Jagr is most likely NOT coming back – 90/10

    Avery to Dallas – DONE

Malik will end up in no man’s land – DONE

    Mara -gone/Staying?

Backman & Toots gone – DONE

Struds – Ottowa maybe? Def not coming back right?

Shanny, if Jagr is a def no, Sather will resign to be the Captain, for veteran presence, and for dimished role/minutes
(You know Sather WILL sign one, so we’d better get used to it, even though Im a Shanny fan he prob shouldnt, jsut saying what he’ll probably do)

Does anyone else think more guys are on the chopping block to be traded, as Sather is probably done with new signings at least?

    Current Roster

New Blood: Redden, Rissmiller, Voros, Swedish Dude, Fristche, Zherdev

Last years boys: Drury, Gomer, Prucha, Dawes, Dubi, Cally, Sjoestrom, Betts, Hank, Valli, Girardi, Staal, Rosi, Orr, Hollweg

Wolfpack Prospects – korpi and the rest – maybe TWO make the team out of camp?

  46. stuart

what is the Ranger cap # presently??? Ho much cash do they have left??

How about signing Mara 1 yr. $1.5 and Jagr and calling it a day?

Prucha for Havlat would work, Havlat supreme talent but of course has his issues

    thanks for the cap info..

  47. Rangers6830

    Stay Jags!

  48. Derf

    DB – thats great…good job ESPN =P
    ——
Avery is such an ass…and no i’m not just turning my back on him because he left i’ve been mad at him all year i think he’s been a crybaby since the arbitration issue last summer… he’s a baby. Good job leaving NY so u can date a nice girl from texas sean…. he just threw away what could have been a great finish to his career in a place where people really liked him.

if he wanted to stay here, he would have taken the offer that was a million dollars more than he got the year before, and it makes me laugh how he thinks his value should have went that high when he has still yet to score more than like 15 goals in a season. Im sorry, its important to have a pest on the team but when you think you’re worth all that money and your highest point total on a season is 48…thats sad.

    goodbye sean

  49. dc

Pens sign 2 wingers. they don’t want Jagr either. no one wants him except Edm as plan B because they tried for Hossa, and their new owner wants to make a big splash.

but actions speak louder than words. and the actions of the NHL GMs have said plenty to confirm what guys like me have been saying all along about Jagr.

when teams don’t want you, it confirms that his baggage far overrides any bit of occasional talent still left.

  50. CML

Phoenix Coyotes sign UFA defencemen David Hale.

  51. joejoe315

i think everything is over till monday

  52. deja

    TRANSACTION
2:28PM Phoenix Coyotes sign UFA defencemen David Hale.
1:57PM Pittsburgh Penguins sign UFA forward Ruslan Fedotenko (1-year, $2.5 million).
1:57PM Pittsburgh Penguins sign UFA forward Miroslav Satan (1-year, $3.5 million).

  53. Rob C

    DC
Occasional talent? This guy has 600 goals. He had a bad year and scored 71 points last year. I think he’s got one or two 90-point seasons left.

You will all be crying for Jagr when this team is averaging 1.78 goals per game. UGGGGGHHGHHGHGHGHG I’m so PO’ed right now!

  54. Matt

Taking MikeNJ’s roster i’m going to put the lines together.

    Shanahan – Dubinsky – Prucha
Zherdev – Gomez – (Korpi, Jamtin)
    Callahan – Drury – Dawes
    (Rissmiller,Fritsche ) – Betts – (Voros, Orr, Sjostrom)

    Redden – Rozsival
    Staal – Girardi
Sanguinetti – Mara (I’m saying He Resigns)

    Henrik
    Valliquette

  55. donsausage

seriously derf..great points..do people in dallas even know what icing is? i think not.. every dallas team has a headcase and in some cases more than one.. TO, Pacman, i hate the nba but i’m sure someone.. milton bradley.. and now sean avery..i couldn’t hate dallas more if i tried..mostly bc of the cowboys

  56. The Heterodox Economist

Slide rule? My dear, even if we include what you call the ‘slide rule’ into the equation, what Jagr’s camp is proposing is 0.5 million less. But I suppose the Rangers operate with magic voodoo dollars that stay constant all the time and therefore $8 million = a lot of money, no matter what the circumstance? Yeah, I’m sure that’s why the Rangers signed Wade Redden at 6.5 million per season.

    Speaking of hackshows…

  57. Peter

    Malik to Detroit…

  58. stf

Stop putting these stupid lineups over and over again… WE’RE NOT DONE YET!

  59. stf

    You’re kidding me Peter, right?

  60. donsausage

get a clue economist..why don’t you go pump hawking

  61. blackhawks

what about a trade w the blackhawks for winger Havlat and dman Seabrooke.. they like prucha, what else would we need to throw in to get it done?

  62. Will

I still think that the Rangers will sign a veteran winger. So my view of line combinations are as follows:

    Veteran FA-Gomez-Zherdev
    Callahan-Drury-Dawes
    Korpiskoski-Dubinsky-Parenteau/Prucha/Cherepanov
    Fritsche-Anisimov-Orr

    Rosival-Staal
    Redden-Girardi
    Mara-Potter/Sanguinetti/Pock

  63. Matt

Will, that Veteran Winger will be Shanahan, they’ll sign him just to be Captain.

  64. The Heterodox Economist

Ooh, you’re adding insightful analysis to the topic there; don’t know how to respond to the hockey part, so stick it to the oil part, good idea. If I’m an economist, I must be speculating on oil. Right on.

And besides, if we get rid of Jagr, bring in Naslund or Demitra as his replacement and trade Prucha for Malkin, the Rangers will be set headed for the Cup, right guys?

    Dream on.

  65. CML

Will, I agree with having Gomez and Zherdev on the same line together, both have the same style of play, which consists of some amazing coast to coast rushes. But before anyone should sit down and lay out lines for opening game already, we need to see which players have chemistry because that was a big problem at the start of the last season. You also forgot some players like Voros and Resmiller. As well as Cherapenov might not be ready yet for the Rangers.

  66. CML

Will, and I think Dubinsky is better than a 3rd liner, eh? He proved himself last season to be on the 1st or 2nd lines.

  67. eric

we need jagr back end of story. this team right now is not close to a playoff team

  68. Peter

Of course the Malik thing was a joke.

In the real world, reports have the Rangers with offers out to both Naslund and Demitra. So as much as Jagr would like to drag his feet, with Pittsburgh now out, he may be forced into deciding sooner if these other players opt in to the Rangers. Or maybe he’s deciding between Omsk and Edmonton.

I guess he can’t believe nobody wants to give him 2 years. But face it, he was awesome in the playoffs for a month. Beyond that he looked near done for large chunks of the year. The market is what it is. It is showing him his value – monetarily at least – and it looks like he needs to decide where he’d like to play and accept that the market has dictated the terms.

  69. eric

www.theinsideronpittsburghsports.com follow this i have for 2 days now. lots of rumors

  70. Rangers6830

Some team will give him two years if they feel he’s really interested, one of them I believe Edmonton. :(

  71. Andrew

Jagr’s options are drying up honestly unless Vancouver comes in with a big offer late as they are known to do. Why Jagr would want to go play up in Edmonton with no shot at the postseason is beyond me. The Rangers could and should match the one year, $7m offer that Edmonton gave him, re-sign Paul Mara and move on.

If they don’t then I’m all for moving Prucha and either Tom Pyatt or Brodie Dupont to Chicago for Martin Havlat. I know Havlat has injury issues but say he does get hurt his salary does not count against the cap for every day that he is on the IR. So that would leave the Rangers in a position to make a trade if they needed to next year.

  72. sved

In more important news (than wondering if Beer Titty Jags will sign with NYR), I hereby declare my braciole is sole property of Mrs. Alex Rodriquez….Sorry fellas

  74. Reeck

Naslund makes sense as a first-line winger. World-class sniper, plays defense, team captain, and after Vancouver, needs to get onto a line that can play some real offense. Much cheaper than the other Mats.

  75. eric

Actually Naslund’s first name is Markus.

  77. The Heterodox Economist

    Sved,

You’re right about the buyouts, but I wouldn’t worry about the salary cap dwindling any time soon. With the economy the way it is, people are gonna at least try to make the same amount (in the real value) as they’ve in the past and as inflation accelerates, it will translate to more nominal dollars. Shortening cap space in completely counter-intuitive in that sense.

    Rismiller-Betts-Voros/Sjostrom (if hes not traded)

    Redden-Staal
    Rosival-Girardi
Mara- (someone from Hartford- pock, sanguetti?)

    Lundqvist
    Valliquette

    thats a pretty solid team

    feasable?

  82. what if

    so its essentially-

OUT: Jagr, Shanahan, Prucha, Straka, Avery
IN: Zherdev, Naslund, Havlat, Fritsche, Rismiller (all pretty young minus Naslund)

    OUT: Malik, Tyutin
    IN: Redden, Hartford player

  83. Steve

Sam, any word on when Redden or Zherdev might be in town?

  84. Jonny D

We are going to have to put Nikki with either Dru or Dubi. He can’t play with Gomez. He loves to rush the puck. Only way it’ll work is if they both alternate when they are going to take it.

  85. Agravaine

Since people keep making lineups (me included but anyway) keep in mind that with Shanny and possibly Jagr gone PRucha can finally return to the right wing, which he played his sensational rookie year… he was switched to left wing and lost pp time thanks to Shanny (who was worth it) but now that the two are gone (possibly) ut him back at his better side…

  86. Rocha

A lot of people here seem unaware as to Fritsche’s abilities. He’s the same age as Dubinsky and is almost on his level of talent. He’s not fodder for the Wolfpack, he’s got decent upside and he’s still young enough to reach it. He scored 10 goals last season playing with Malhotra and Chimera, and 12 the season before. Meanwhile, everyone’s boyfriend Sean Avery scored 15 playing with a combination of Gomez, Drury, Jagr and Shanahan. That trade yesterday was an old fashioned New York mugging, best deal since Carter for Jagr.

  87. Will

Well CML, I agree with you whole-heartedly than Dubinsky is a 1st or 2nd liner, however, Drury and Gomez are the top 2 centers on this team. “What if”, I’d be hard pressed to move Dubinsky to a wing role as he operates better in the center of the ice. Fritsche projects to be a good winger as he does not have a great face off percentage. If any of you were to recall, Tom Renney, over the past 2 off seasons, has labeled a person in the system (Hartford) as “deserving a long look” for playing time, Artem Anisimov is that person this year. I believe with the emergence of Drury and Callahan as top tier penalty killers, Betts no longer serves a purpose on the team. Just my opinion, feel free to criticize.

  93. Conference call leaked!!!!

    This just in!

    Ranger trade:

Wingers Petr Prucha, Ryan Hollweg, and Alexei Cherepanov have been invovled in a three way trade.

The Rangers will receive Martin Havlat and defenceman Brent Seabrook.

Havlat will then be sent to the Pittsburgh Penguins in return for winger Miroslav Satan.

  94. joey status quo

zherdev is a f’in dangler kid is d nasty

  95. Agravaine

eric is that for sure, or just on the rumor site

  96. NASLUND

    did we just sign NASLUND???

also, if we traded cherepanov id be so f’in pissed

  97. stf

    Don’t joke like that…

  98. Will

I highly doubt that trade as the Rangers won’t deal to Pitt.

  99. donsausage

eric that site is garbage what you got?

  100. eric

    there are 98 percent right

  101. stf

Cherepanov is going NOWHERE! If so, I’m done being Rangers fan.

  102. Parros

i just heard it too. we just naslund done. not on tsn yet

  103. The Heterodox Economist

Oh, so now we should talk about financials? I didn’t know you cared so much but sure thing, ehhhhhhh ohhhhhhhhhh!

If you must know, I’m having one helluva time playing FX and as long as Trichet increases ECB rates while Bernanke does nothing with the Federal Funds rates, I sell part of my exchanged Euros to US banks and make a nice profit. And with a few assets in my hand and CDOs expiring soon, I’m pretty much set.

Thanks for asking though, nice retard soundbites by the way Chewie.

  104. eric

    1 year 4.5

  105. joey status quo

ehhhhhhhhh ohhhhhhhhhhh..ya da man heterodox..go give bernanke a blumpkin

  106. Jeff

they better not have traded cherapanov. god damn you sather.

  107. Oh Boy

    oh boy

    oh boy

    oh boy

  108. The Heterodox Economist

ROFL You wanna stick to one topic, i.e. hockey, financials, or whatever? What’s wrong, forgot to take ADD pills in the morning there Chewie? Ehhhhhhh ohhhhhhh!

  109. stf

Better Naslund than Demitra. Naslund is 35, 25 goals, 30 assists, not bad for a crap team.

  110. Conference call leaked!!!!

    j/k

The New York Rangers traded Artem Anisimov not Ryan Hollweg.

  111. MikeyNJ

    The Heterodox Economist:

    GET OFF THE BOARDS!

No gives a shit about you arguing with joey bag of donuts

  112. Agravaine

    can anyone confirm Naslund???

  113. stf

    Any link for Naslund?

  114. Agravaine

I wouldn’t mind Naslund Dubi Jagr…. if Jagr would take a 4 mil deal now… well six I guess actually is our cap space….

  115. frohli

why would anyone give any credibility to that cherapanov satan trade satan just signed there first they cant even trade him today and second sather is just not that dumb ignore it but Naslund does seem like he is onboard with a 1 year deal pretty superb stop gap

  116. Matt

Don’t worry guys Conference Call’s being a troll, he’s making everyone worried by saying stupid trades. Kid..Do us a favor.Get some friends, or a life. Maybe even a girlfriend if your straight, because i know right now you have no life by doing this.

  117. Parros

not yet – its on some pitt website. seems legit though

  118. Agravaine

stf all I have is tsn and they have been behind at times…. I’m looking….

  119. eric

THAT PITT SITE HAS BEEN DEAD ON

  120. stf

Why the heck Naslund trade to NYR would be on Pittsburgh site???

  121. Matt

Edmonton’s claiming they signed Naslund, kind of like they claimed they signed Nylander, idk but pretty sure WE signed Naslund.

  122. Blue404Seats

cherepanov – the first real star we could have homegrown since kovalev

we trade him we better get crosby, ovechkin, malkin or 1st pick next year (tavares)

dont give me havlat aka glass

  123. Agravaine

yea eric, I know but I still want to find it on a news site not a rumor one…

  124. Parros

    its on theinsideronpittsburghsports.com

  125. Agravaine

    stf,

becuase Pitts was trying to get him as well, its basically there to tell Pitts fans they missed him…

  126. Matt

    What Pitt site?

  127. Rocha

You guys can’t be that gullible. We traded Cherepanov for Havlat and then traded him for Satan?

By the way, I have a nice bridge for sale. Good location, connects Manhattan to Brooklyn. $100 or best offer.

  128. Blue404Seats

by the way.. is it me or are Markus Naslund’s best years behind him?

  129. Agravaine

Zipay posted it, but acknowledged no confirmation…

  130. stf

Here is what the rumour says:
3:51 p.m. I’m hearing Markus Naslund has signed with the New York Rangers. I’m being told 1yr – 4.5 million per season. Nothing confirmed yet. They had offers on the table to Demitra and Naslund.

  131. The Heterodox Economist

That’s funny, I don’t remember writing anywhere for you to “give a shit” about what I write, do you?

But hey, you’re the owner of this website right? Sure thing boss.

It’s pathetic enough that fellow Ranger fans can’t even properly communicate with other Ranger fans in a blog that covers the Rangers, so no problem, I’ll just show myself out.

And Sam, your blog is still excellent and my primary source of Rangers news. Keep up the great work.

  132. Agravaine

    here is Zipay

    Is it Markus Naslund?

That’s what one source tells me….but no confirmation

  133. Rangers6830

huh? Naslund? Should I be happy?

  134. dc

here it is folks, from KUKLA

Rumor: Markus Naslund to the Rangers
by Alanah on 07/03/08 at 04:28 PM
    Comments (0)

Steve Zippy at Blue Notes in Newsday notes that the Rangers are hosting a conference call at 4:30pm ET with “deals/signings imminent.”

    Now this:

    Is it Markus Naslund?
That’s what one source tells me….but no confirmation

  135. IceKnight

Hey Naslund scored as many goals as Jagr last year and we have two assist guys in Gomez and Drury, so not too shabby. I’d say Naslund is our younger snappier replacement for Shanny. We still need a hard hitting defender though!

  136. Rocha

Naslund’s still a great player, hopefully it’s just 1 year, though. 2 at most.

  137. Agravaine

crap… on Zipays blog htey are saying Bertuzzi is coming, I can’t root for him I hope this is untrue…

  138. Agravaine

by that I mean posters saying it not Zipay himself…

  139. stf

Nothing’s confirmed yet but I wouldn’t mind. Better than $15M for two years of Jagr.

  140. eric

I WOULDNT LIE THAT SITE IS DAMN GOOD

  141. dc

I pray it’s true. get Naslund, yes. ‘cause that means the end of the Jagr diva era. good riddance.

  142. Agravaine

    I wouldn’t mind Naslund… I DON’T want Bertuzzi

  143. Parros

kind of agree Ags but if he brings his A game to the Rangers then I will look past his… past.

  144. Jonny D

nah its about the Boyle trade. Boyle for Prucha, Sjoie, and a first rounder….E5!!!!!!!!

  145. stf

But a NO NO to Bertuzzi. I hope Sather is not going to such a mistake. I hate the guy.

  146. CML

Bertuzzi is a disgraceful hockey player, I’ll be furiuos if he’s a Ranger.

  147. IceKnight

    From Zipay:

Kalinin and Naslund are newest Rangers

Swedish left wing Markus Naslund, who played in Vancouver for 12 years is the newest Ranger, inking a one year, $4.5-million deal. They also added defenseman Dmitri Kalinin from Buffalo.

Naslund, who turns 35 on July 30, was 25-30-55 last season, and had four goals in a dozen playoff games for the Canucks.

  148. Agravaine

    Parros,

I can’t that hit on Moore was attmepted murder… I blame his coach as well for maybe ordering some sort of action, but I can’t ignore that it happened… I mean I have not liked players on teams I rooted for before but this would be the worst…. Like when Clemens hit Piazza in the head… and we were supposed to have forgtotten that Clemens drilled and hurt Jeter, Knoblauch and Tino…. and Pedro on the Mets… but Bertuzzi I can’t even try to ignore that…

  149. Agravaine

    Baslund and Kalinin??

  150. Matt

Naslund is almost like Jagr, not quite as good as him, but doesn’t take plays off. Naslund is a fragile guy like Jagr, but then again thats why we have Voros and Orr.

  151. Parros

Beer missing all the fun again…. poor bastiche!

  152. Ryan

    via wikipedia….

Markus Näslund (born July 30, 1973, in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden) is a Swedish professional ice hockey player with the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League, where he serves as team captain.

  153. 22figure8

    From Zipay

Swedish left wing Markus Naslund, who played in Vancouver for 12 years is the newest Ranger, inking a one year, $4.5-million deal. They also added defenseman Dmitri Kalinin from Buffalo.

Naslund, who turns 35 on July 30, was 25-30-55 last season, and had four goals in a dozen playoff games for the Canucks.

  154. Derf

    naslund

  155. Matt

I like Kalinin, good young player, doesn’t rack up points, but gets alot of assists, Sather’s doing good today.

  156. Jeff

I’m fine with Naslund/Kalinin, but weren’t both of them not UFA? who did we give up for them is of more importance…

  157. 22figure8

Those Pittsburgh guys were all over this 45 minutes ago.

  158. Parros

I hear ya Ags… I hated when we traded for Lindros… but somehow made it work. Was glad he was on the team when we svcked. Bertuzzi hit on Moore was criminal… no two ways about it.

  159. Matt

Naslund was a free agent, and so was Kalinin, Vancouver, and Buffalo couldn’t sign either of them, (Why Vancouver wanted Sundin)

  160. Jim

    tsn says naslund 2 years?

  161. SpeedSkatOrr

Breaking news on TSN, Naslund for 2 years. No details yet!

  162. dc

    both are UFAs

    good signings

  163. martyd

Is it a surprise guys from pittsburgh are so close to the actual events of the NHL. They run the league and the pittsburgh team.

Bettman aka commisioner, aka penguins partial owner :)

  164. Agravaine

they were ufa’s we signed them…

I’m done then… defintely on the defense, we have room for two rookies…

done on forwards done on defense…

If Jagr signs its gravy now…

  165. matt

yea tsn is saying 2 years

  166. MCL0912

Naslund confirmed that he’s signed a 2-year deal. He said he’s received offers from other teams for longer terms, but wanted to go to the Rangers. He said, “I wanted to be signing with a Cup contender. I think we’ve all seen how tight it is, the race, and it’s very difficult to pick a winner before the playoffs start. I believe that just looking at the history, the Rangers are going in the right direction and I want to be a part of that.”

  167. eric

LISTEN ALL USE THAT PITTSITE TO GET INFO. THEY ARE 45 MINS AHEAD OF TIME USUALLY. TRUST ME HERE

  168. felicia

we got marcus naslund for 2 yrs.

  169. MCL0912

I just realized, Renney coached Naslund before…and Redden had Perin before..go figure.

  170. 22figure8

Zippy says 1 year, more from Naslund

Naslund, who turns 35 on July 30, was 25-30-55 last season, and had four goals in a dozen playoff games for the Canucks. He had been the captain there for eight years. “I wanted to be signing with a Cup contender,” he said.

“Right from noon on July 1, my eye was on the Rangers, it took a little longer than I thought,” said Naslund, who said he spoke with former coach Tom Renney several times. “Having Henrik back there was a big selling point for me. I think that’s where you have to start building a team….”

  171. SpeedSkatOrr

Naslund 2 years and Kalinin for 1 year per TSN

  172. bye bye princess

hissy-fit Jagr is still picking his nose and trying to decide

    Edmonton or Omsk

    either way, bring your parka

  173. Tony from AZ

Scott Gomez, come get the STANLEY CUP !

  174. Jim

i like it. jagr must be pissed at himself now…

  175. Spike

    We got Naslund

  176. stuart

    IS Kalinin any good??/

2 yrs for naslund, 1 would have been better his production has been going down alot..

  177. 22figure8

    Easy! Tony from AZ.

You guys think Sam is enjoying a couple of cold ones at his BBQ and said screw the updates?

  178. Rif

whats the word on our cap space now??

i mean jags could still come back

  179. Blue404Seats

    Matt July 3rd, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Naslund is almost like Jagr, not quite as good as him, but doesn’t take plays off. Naslund is a fragile guy like Jagr, but then again thats why we have Voros and Orr.

Jagr and Naslund shouldnt be mentioned even in the same breath.

  180. walshspw

    Naslund-Gomez-Zherdev??? sounds good to me

  181. Blue404Seats

you can compare a top scorer ever to play the game of hockey to a player who had a few decent years in his career… c’mon matt

  182. Tamp Fan

    From Tampa Sports Station WEIN….

Boyle Traded to NYR for Prucha , Mara and 1st Round Pick

  183. Matt

Tamp Fan, MARA ISNT EVEN ON OUR TEAM ANYMORE

  184. SpeedSkatOrr

All these signings are starting to give me the feel of the 05-06 season. It’s almost all Europeans that they are signing! Let’s hope they are doing the right thing!

  185. donsausage

i dig on naslund.. guy is smooth.. don’t know too much about kalinin

  186. eric

DO I GET ANY PROPS FROM U GUYS ON HERE FOR BREAKING THIS CRAPPY SIGNING

  187. UKRanger

Love the signings, both of them. Gomez must be licking his lips at the thought of Naslund and Zherdev on his wings..!!

All my maths has gone to pot now – but i reckon there must be 5-6m left. Maybe there’s still enough left for Jagr..?

  188. bye bye princess

    Naslund-Gomez-Zherdev

    Dawes-Dubi-Drury

    Prucha-Fritsche-Callahan

    Rissmiller-Betts-Voros-Sjostrom-Orr etc

  189. Matt

Hmm, i’m gonna say theres like, 5-6 mill left in the pot.

  190. MikeyNJ

    props to you eric!

  191. Blue404Seats

what if jagr signed…. oh boy would we have offense

    salivating at the thought

  192. Ryan

tfp… 4:56pm ET – More updates on the Rangers. Sather said he has money to sign another defenseman, and he indicated that he won’t be signing Martin Straka and that Straka will be signing and playing in Europe next season.

4:54pm ET – Sather about Jagr: “I talked to Jaromir today and waited for a call for the last couple of days and nothing happened, so we decided they were going to move on.”

4:53pm ET – Jagr will not be signing with the Rangers, Rangers GM Glen Sather just confirmed.

4:45pm ET – Naslund also confirmed he hasn’t spoke to Mats Sundin. Thought I needed to share that, too.

  193. Matt

Buy Buy Princess, Drury doesn’t play right wing, and Frische isnt a center

  194. bye bye princess

no, you have other minor signings, and you have to leave some room to make deals at the deadline.

  195. Ryan

5:02pm ET – Interesting note here, as the Rangers haven’t closed the doors on re-signing Brendan Shanahan. Says Sather, “I left Brendan a message. I wouldn’t say the door is closed there. There’s still some ongoing things to be done here. He’s told me he wants to play in New York. He’s not out of the equation.”

  196. Clive Diggs

So let me get this right, Sather replaced Jagr with Naslund? If Jagr wasn’t worth the money because he is “on the decline”, why would he choose Naslund? He certainly looks to be on the decline but on top of that, but unlike Jagr, has not proven the ability to play at a high level in NYC.

Jagr was a proven NY-caliber player. Naslund’s scoring dropped dramatically in the 3 seasons post-lockout – it should be the opposite.

Hopefully I’m proven wrong by midway thru the season, but I’m currently disappointed with this strategy.

  197. eric

thanks mikey. too bad i hate the moves. i live for this team and they are not doing this right at all. jagr should be here.

    once again www.theinsideronpittsburghsports.com

  198. Matt

nvm Fritsche did play some center last year

  199. Parros

yeah props Eric – now go get yer shine box!! :)

  200. Matt

Naslund’s gonna try to get Sundin to sign with us, w00t go Nazzy

  201. Agravaine

bull!!!! If we gave Naslund two years that is crud… that is what Jagr wanted two frickin years and Sather didn’t budge… if anyone was going to get two years it should have been Jagr!!!!!!!

  202. dcloutier39

“During a conference call, general manager GLen Sather said that the Naslund signing means that Jaromir Jagr will not be back with the Rangers next season.”

  203. bye bye princess

I was not trying to put them in positions, I just was trying to list them all

  204. Ryan

tfp … 5:05pm ET – On the defensive front, the Rangers have an offer for Paul Mara and are waiting to hear back from him. Sather said “there’s lots of opportunities.”

  205. eric

jagr should be back. naslund at 2 years is awful. hes too soft

  206. walshspw

He may have given Naslund two years, but at 2-3 million less per year than the cost of Jagr, leaving some more room for other possible additions

  207. Matt

I like Mara, but mostly for his beard, wish i could grow one that bushy lmao.

  208. Agravaine

Pissed off, if anyone got two years it ought to have been Jagr…

  209. Tamp Fan

Sorry never mind, no first round draft pick, just prucha and mara.

    Good luck guys.

  210. Agravaine

We have enough D! Rozsival, Mara, and Kalinin are all the same age… its enough…

  211. MCL0912

Ag—I’m thinking it’s b/c Naslund took less…but since the # isn’t out, I’m not sure. Also, Naslund, I believe, is fast.

With Jagr I give him all my respect for bringing this organization back to respectable. However, I think it came down to he wasn’t happy Glen didn’t roll out the red carpet and Glen wasn’t going to wait for him to decide now.

I think he was amazing against the Pens..but waiting all season long for the light to come on. The risk is, if we did/do sign Jags and he’s not happy about all of this, 10 to 1 says he plays the petulant child on the ice.

Also, heard they gave Mara an offer and are waiting to hear from him.

  212. 22figure8

    Parros- toooooooo funny

  213. Rangers6830

Nasland gets two years but Jagr doesn’t? Sather is such a joke.

  214. Ryan

Naslund wanted to come year, Jagr didn’t or else he’d be here…

  215. Ryan

    year=here

  216. bye bye princess

eff Jagr and his clique. that kind of undue influence by a player over the running of the team has to end.

the PP has to be run the basic way, not the fancy-crap way.

  217. Agravaine

Kalinin played 50 games last year before haiving surgery on a hernia… hws he doing?

  218. dcloutier39

    Naslund $4mill/year
    Jagr @ least $7mill/year…

  219. tomg

don’t understand why sather gave rosival 5 mil a year and I’m not sure redden making 6.5 is any better. The only thing I like what sather did was trading Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman for the two young kids. Don’t know much about Kalinin
and signing Naslund doesn’t make much sense because he is old
and his skills are declining rapidly.

  220. deja

aggy calm down it was for a lot less money
and cant you see whats happening
sather caught on the sweedish hockey team one the red wings won with the sweeds
its not the cheq rangers anymore its the sweedish rangers kid

    hop aboard the sweed train

  221. Agravaine

we first saw 1 yr 4.5

if Nas has 2 yrs 9 I’m still pissed….even if Jagr would have been 2 yrs 12 I say it should be Jagr not Nas…

  222. Matt

I guess the Czechs got cancelled LMAO corny joke.

  223. Agravaine

no no no two years to an older declining player, I say bring back Jagr

  224. 22figure8

I like it. Naslund wants to be here. JJ wanted to dictate terms to be here. Thanks for the 4 years Jagr, it was a good ride. good luck.

    Hello new team:>

  225. MCL0912

Ag I saw 2 years 8m. Jagr wanted more money than Gomez..we couldn’t do that. Besides Zip says Jagr is considering the insane Russian contract

  226. Brian

The problem with the idea of bringing Jagr back is that he couldn’t play with any of the centers other than Dubisnky. Gomez and Drury are the players to be built around now. Unless one of them were traded it didn’t make sense to bring Jagr back and have centers that should be #1 and #2 playing on the 2nd and 3rd lines.

  227. Agravaine

    2 yrs 4 mil

his ast three seasons worth of points are

    79
    60
    55

    Jagr’s last seasons are

    123
    96
    71

    I would have taken Jagr

  228. dcloutier39

Definitely.. Naslund wants to be here and has for a while.. Jagr is a chick who can’t make up her mind

  229. eric

read blue notes. on that note i will miss jagr. thanks for all u done. jagr should still be here.

  230. Agravaine

    >:^(

    whatever… at least we don’t have Bertuzzi…

  231. deja

when people look at stats you really need to take the team they played with into account the nucks only had a few good passers in the sedins and linden that aint saying much

  232. Agravaine

    new post

  233. MCL0912

Ag—-at least your thinking positively..I would have just been disgusted if it was Bertuzzi.

  234. bye bye princess

    you snooze, you lose

the early bird gets the contract

    money skates, and bullshit waits

  235. Bryan

Markus Naslund is off the available list for free agents, as the Swedish winger has signed a 2-year contract with the New York Rangers worth $8 million.

The unrestricted free agent, who turns 35 on July 30, finished the final campaign of a three-year, $18 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks, where played the last 12 seasons.

Acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1996, Naslund bloomed into one the Canucks’ most celebrated players in franchise history. In 1,035 career NHL games, he has 371 goals and 823 points.

Drafted by the Penguins in 1991, Naslund won the Lester B. Pearson Award as the NHL’s most outstanding player – as voted by his peers – in 2002-03 after finishing second in league scoring with 104 points, including 48 goals.

The Rangers also announced the signing of defencemen Dmitri Kalinin to a one-year contract.

The 27-year old played 46 games for the Buffalo Sabres and marked one goal and seven assists. In eight seasons with the Sabres, Kalinin has 145 points in 466 games.

Interesting how sooooo many people last year when Jagr disappeared for the first 3/4 of the season wanted him gone and now he’s gone and everyone wants him back ! Time to move on and away from the prima donna’s. Did you happen to notice that Detroit doesn’t have any of them and won ? All gritty hard working guys. For those of you complaining why don’t you wait until the puck drops and then send out your “I told you so’s” if it doesn’t work out but I tend to think Gomez/Naslund or works out better then Jagr/Dubinsky any day of the week !

  236. stf

You’re the man, Eric! Thanks. I like the signing, less than for Jags and he didn’t even call back Sather so I’m glad we’re moving forward.
