Rangers have signed forward Patrick Rissmiller from San Jose

143

Update, 7:09 p.m: The Rangers have signed Wade Redden. This merits its own post.

Update, 7:07 p.m.: Voros signed for three years, $3 year million ($1 million per). Still no word on Rissmiller or Jamtn’s terms.

Update, 6:48 p.m.: Rozsival clocks in at four years, $20 million.

Update, 6:15 p.m.: Too many Swedes! In addition to announcing the Rissmiller signing (who is not a Swede), the team also has signed forward Andreas Jamtn from the Swedish Elite League. Maybe Sundin and Naslund really are next.

In other news, Brian Rolston is again a Devil, cashing in at four years, $20 million per.

Update, 5:59 p.m.: The Rangers have also confirmed Michal Rozsival’s deal is imminent.

The 29-year-old Rissmiller is another big body wing. He had eight goals and nine assists in 79 games for the Sharks last year. He is coming off a sports hernia surgery that he played through in the postseason.

The natural conclusion one could draw from the Rangers signing two edgy left wings today is they’re preparing for life without Sean Avery.

  1. Well, really it is a rumor scale of his. is a rumor, and is “omg ekland says it is a sure thing”

I still stick to my first statement though.

  2. Who??? I have to say that I am kind of scratching my head today. The only thing I can think of is that we are going to be signing someone and also trading some folks for someone else. Anyone else care to chime in here?

  3. Doodie Machetto on

Or they are just thinking of how they can field a Wolf Pack team after pillaging of its players

  4. This is a disaster. Disaster.

    Voros
    Rissmiller
    Roszival

    Rolston just signed with NJ.

    Disaster.

  5. I’m glad sather is earning his money today. With those two additions to the team we are sure to be hoisting the cup this year

  6. It might look like a disaster, but its not. You don’t build a team overnight. We want a tough defensive team, this is a start. The offensive players will come, whether it be this offseason or next. I guess I’m one of the few that are satisfied so far. Pretty much this offseason is a bunch of teams overpaying for a bunch of B-level free agents just because they are FAs. Usually this is where we step in and outbid everyone and end up regretting it later. So far we haven’t made one of those mistakes.

  7. I really wanted Commodore to be on the Rangers. I’m sad :(

On a side note, when I went to the Rangers/Sharks game, Rissmiller had like a whole section there for him, well, now they can be there 41 times a year.

  8. Rolston is 34 and is signing a 4-year deal. And we’re supposed to be upset that he’s not a Ranger?

  9. Doodie Machetto on

    ” You don’t build a team overnight”

Ha, tell that to Tampa. Or the Flyers last year.

  10. Maybe this means we will finally trade worthless Betts. As far as Rolston goes. Don’t want him. He’s ancient and one dimensional offensively.

I’d rather have Slats trade for some guys. It’s cheaper.

  11. Doodie Machetto on

Adam, 5 year deal. That’s why he is signing for less than his value.

He could have probably gotten 5 million per, but only for 2-3 years.

  12. Lou Perrotta on

In other news, Brian Rolston is again a Devil, cashing in at four years, $20 million per.

OK, Rolston is good, but I doubt his contract is actually $80 Million.

  13. I just think its funny that people complained about how we overpaid for guys for years, now they are asking where our big name FA signing is? I have a feeling its either A) coming much later or B) not coming at all. I’m actually OK with that this year.

  14. A team with scoring woes adds two 4th liners on the first day of free agency. Funny thing is, the 4th line might have been our most consistent line all 07-08, albeit overused.
Well, at least we’ll have the best 4th line in hockey next year.

  15. Do we need these guys??? Should we not build from within ??

We need scorers and defense not 3-4rth line LW’s

  16. I’m not sure why people are so upset that we just signed two gritty left wings with size who each scored 15-20 points last year. Each of them easily outscored our entire fourth line, and probably that’s where they’ll wind up being slotted in.

The defense needed an upgrade, remember? Stop worrying about Sundin, Jagr, Avery, Shanny, and Rolston. The team had zero chemistry last year, and next year with the same corps of aging forwards would not even make the playoffs. Let Gomez and Drury center the top 2 lines, let Dubi center the third or move to wing, let Callahan and Prucha and Dawes show what they really have. Its all about the defense and a PP PP quarterback. We need maybe one forward to replace Jagr. That’s it up front.

  17. Doodie Machetto on

Adam, 4 years 20 million was Nylander last year. Rolston is 5 years 20 million.

    Check out spector’s trade rumors.

  18. Rissmiller is a 3rd liner btw. Not a 4th liner. Hes another gritty guy who has offensive talents. Before you guys jump to conclusions, actually do some HW. I’ve watched these guys play and trust me, they are much much better than you all are giving them credit for. Once again, not 1st/2nd liners or difference makers, but they play hard, play physical, and add some size and some scoring to the bottom two lines.

  19. Wow, an 8 goal scorer. Those are hard to find — good thing Sather jumped all over him. And he’s minus 7 on the Sharks. A defensive specialist! Filling holes, one mediocre player at a time.

  20. rissmiller is american so not sure how he adds to the # of swedes on the team…

  21. Bob MacKenzie from TSN has just said that its down to San Jose and the Rangers for Wade Redden

  22. Doodie Machetto on

I’ve seen a lot of the Sharks. Rissmiller isn’t terrible. He is certainly an upgrade over Hollweg and Orr (although he doesn’t fight like Orr).

  23. unless these guys are going to the ahl, how many third and fourth line wingers do we need, as i see it we now have the following:

callahan (who is a good third liner)
dawes (who will probably never be anything other than a third liner)
    sjostrom
    betts
    hollweig
    orr
    new marcel hossa 1
    new marcel hossa 2
    koriposki
    byers
    moore
then the two swedish wingers who i know little about but i cant imagine they are more than third liners

not saying i want them to get hossa or jagr, but it seems like we are just signing more of the same exact player we already have. barring a trade, prucha is now our top offensive winger who we have abandoned in favor of old man shanahan the last two years

  24. Doodie Machetto on

Tim, he was talking about Andreas Jamtin.

I looked him up, 2nd in SEL in PIMs. Also chipped in 17 goals and 13 assists.

  25. I think Redden is underrated. Ottawa was a horrible team defensively. They didn’t play any system. All they wanted to do was score and rely on guys like Redden to bail them out. I think he would be a great partner for Staal.

  26. Doodie… yeah. I noticed you had it in the last post a couple of minutes before it popped up on TSN… wondering which sites you’re scanning/refreshing-constantly-like-me… lol

  27. Doodie Machetto on

“dawes (who will probably never be anything other than a third liner)”

I disagree. Dawes has the tools to be a 2nd liner eventually.

    “koriposki”

The guy has yet to play in a regular season NHL game. He played in one game for us in the playoffs and scored, a pretty sweet goal at that. He’s a first round draft pick, and could easily become a second, maybe even a first liner. It’s too early to tell.

  28. This shows how much of a well known player Voros is. The front page of the Rangers website reads: “Forward Aaron Vorosk, formerly of the Wild, also joins the team.” Notice the “k” on the end of Voros. They don’t even have a clue who this guy is!

  29. “is Johnny D Sather in Disguise??”

You got it. haha. nah im just trying to ask why people who have complained for years that we overpay for top FAs are now complaining that we haven’t overpaid for any of the FAs this year. Lets face it, this is an awful year for free agent signings. People are just signing these guys because they are there. When Brian Rolston is a top FA or Brian Campbell is the #1 top d-man out there, then its not worth spending more money than you have to in order to get some of these guys.

So pretty much I’m saying make up your mind. Either you want us to overpay for free agents that have a good chance of being busts or you want us to not do that and wait for either trades or next year. Pick one.

  30. I don’t think I’m going to be too happy if this is Jagr, Rosy, Sundin etc. this year. I just don’t get it.

  31. hey doodie, hopefully koriposki turns into more than a third liner, and i just dont see dawes doing that much, thought he was pretty invisible the entire playoffs, i certainly dont think he is better offensively than prucha

  32. Ag- I don’t think any of our signings have been released with actual $$ info. Almost all say undisclosed.

  33. MCL, yea I finally found the tsn list and saw it said undisclosed… I will be pissed if its much thats for certain…

besides tsn what other sites are people watching?

  34. jonny,

i agree this crop is not that good, but i am just sick of us continually signing/trading for players that so nearly resemble people we already have in our system before we give our own kids a chance.

i’ll be the first to admit i dont know that much about the two new guys we got, but i would rather see koriposki, byers, moore or even jessiman get a chance on the the third/fourth line before sjostrom and now these new guys

only player id go after in this market is orpik but even he may be overhyped because of one good playoff run

  35. “hey doodie, hopefully koriposki turns into more than a third liner, and i just dont see dawes doing that much, thought he was pretty invisible the entire playoffs, i certainly dont think he is better offensively than prucha”

he is. prucha is just a goal scorer. he just crashes the net hard and thats how he scores. Dawes can not only crash the net hard, he can snipe and can be a playmaker. He gives you the total offensive package while Prucha is just kinda a one style type of offensive player. The playoffs is tough because its only his 1st full playoff season. You can’t judge the guy based on that. I think as he matures overall and is given a bigger role, he’ll be a fine 2nd line winger just based on his natural abilities.

  36. kuklaskorner is pretty good for getting the info asap and from different sources

  37. Agr… I’m checking Spectors, Kuklas, watching a TSN feed… and also perusing Zip’s and Dellapina’s wee blogs.

Eklund can go shit in his hat.

  38. Doodie Machetto on

Pete, I actually think Sjostrom is much better then you’re giving him credit for.

  39. I need links please! I had one but I lost it when I closed my computer.. I was cleaning up a message board so the other site moved to far back in my history and I can’t find it…

honestly I just want to know asap when/if Rozi resigns

I think he is a good pick right now, especially if he will take less since he apparently wants to be here… Just for a couple of years, rather then giving big money to a guy. In a few years our own kids wil be ready to be the veterans…

  40. Worthless Betts? Have you ever watched the penalty kill without him? Did you see the team at the end of the 05-06 season without him? They fell apart and the penalty kill was awful. Yeah don’t knock betts….

BTW Sam stop drinking too many mistakes today!

  41. From that site full of over-sensitive, skirt wearing mods… HFBoards…

Some poster just said the Fan590 is reporting the Rangers are offering 5 years/$30 million.

And NHL Home Ice reporting Rozy gets 4 years, 20 million.

  42. “jonny,

i agree this crop is not that good, but i am just sick of us continually signing/trading for players that so nearly resemble people we already have in our system before we give our own kids a chance.

valid point, but at the same time Sjoie, Korp, Dawes, and those guys are 3rd/4th liners NOW. In a year or two maybe they can play at the top level. Some guys take longer to develop and don’t grow into those roles until later, especially when you look at when we drafted these guys. Remember we haven’t had a top 5 pick in a long time plus we’ve had guys that were good enough vets to play in the top roles while the other guys could sit back on 3rd and 4th lines.

Its actually cool to think that these guys might be challenged to step up and play in bigger roles than they had to last year. We won’t really know for sure if they can do it, but teams like Pittsburgh and Chicago and LA have done that with their players because they had to. It really shows what the young guys have when they have to play more minutes and more is expected of them.

Voros and Rissmiller can also turn into those guys, but at the same time have proven in a tougher conference that they can play 4th line as well. I’d ideally like to see us make one big signing, but at the same time I don’t mind seeing our young kids each stand out so we can 100% actually see what they bring to the table. We are saying that everyone is the same player, but its because we haven’t seen them in a different role. Give the kids a chance first.

  43. Doodie Machetto on

It’s all because of the boneheaded contract he gave Tyutin. It threw off his salary schedule on defense.

    I think I might puke.

  44. Oh god. What a mistake. What a terrible, terrible mistake.

Doodie, do you meant he Rozi signing?

  45. just wondering does anyone know how much Rozy made per season on his previous contract?

  46. and 4 years 20 mil is too much…unless we are getting Redden. I’m not so concerned with the money, but 4 years? Wow. OK NOW we can rip Sather for this one.

  47. Doodie Machetto on

WTF! Toronto signs Hagman for four years at 3m per! Why ot sign him instead of Voros and Rissmiller! DAMN IT!

Why is our GM so inept?

  48. Maybe Rosi won’t be so bad without Malik to cripple him on defense and without Jags to cripple him on offense. Maybe.

  49. Doodie Machetto on

Jonny, see, I’m more concerned with the money than the term. Rozsi is only 31. But to handcuff us with that salary, even just for this year is terrible. I can’ believe how much he is geting paid.

I threw up a little in my mouth.

  50. Ok, so in three years when the cap is pushing $70 million, will Rozsival at $5 mil be so bad?

  51. I had thought that Rozi was going to take some sort of ‘hometown’ discount. Why can’t our players take hometown discounts. Hossa is apparently going to ‘sleep’ on his offers. and Sather is apparently going to ‘sleep’ while every other team eats up the UFAs.

Seriously, Jersey is taking Holik and Rolston–their own, and we are getting guys who are far too similar to..wait for it..guys already on the team..just the new ones are taller.

    I’m nauseous.

Seriously, if this about Jagr getting $1.00 more than Gomez.. I’m just be beyond livid.

  52. Wait… so Rozi gets 5M for 4 years…

But Avery wants 4M and we can’t get that done.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Am I missing something? How is Rozi worth anythign more than 3M – 3.5

  53. So Rozi is worth 5 million over 4 years but Avery (who has done more in a half season than Rozi has in 3 seasons) isnt worth 4 mill over 2 years?

Don’t get it. Waste of money and time.

  54. Doodie Machetto on

“Am I missing something? How is Rozi worth anythign more than 3M – 3.5″

Bad salary scheduling. They gave Tyutin too much money. Also, the fact that he had almost as many goals and 5 more points than Avery did helps. And don’t give me Avery was hurt because Rozsi is a defenseman. He shouldn’t be anywhere near a $4million forward in either goals or points unless he is an elite defenseman, which he most certainly is not.

Agra, you’re right, he’s 29, but he’ll be 30 before the season starts.

  55. czechthemout!!!! on

It’s amazing how many of you guys were giving Sather the benefit of the doubt on what he would do this off season when the only thing he’s been able to do since he came to the Rangers is take a pouting primdona off of the hands of a team that wanted to rid the self off of a lockeroom cancer so badly, that they offered to pay half of his salary just to get rid of him.I agree with every one here who is pissed off today. We have now added the updated version of Jason Ward,Adam Hall, and Brad shitsbister to our team at the expense of space for kids like Byers,Moore,Anisimov, and yes even Jessiman. Can the next Jason Krog be far behind?

And Rozy for 5million? Glennie must be smoking those funny little cigars again.Who’s gonna play wing with Gomez?

  56. GuitarWizard on

    This proves it.

Glen Sather has been dead for years and Martin Brodeur is running the team while dangling a Sather-looking marionette in front of us…

  57. Blue404Seats on

I must be worth at least a few hundred thousand with these prices…. lets be honest sundin is well past his prime for a 10 mil/year contract

  58. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

Sather was doing, what I thought was, a smart job managing his cap and waiting for the more fiscally wise signings and then he goes and does this?! God, terrible. I’m so angry over 4 more years of Bumzival. Awful!!!!

    FUCK us all!!!
    ….that’s what Sather did today.

  59. Rosi sucks. he is soft, has no emotion and is easily over powered. WTF Sather?

    I hate Sather

  60. Roszival @ $5M/year?!? And they wouldn’t sign Avery for less?????? Thanks a lot Sather, you F…ing moron!

  61. Doodie Machetto on

“Glen Sather has been dead for years and Martin Brodeur is running the team while dangling a Sather-looking marionette in front of us…”

HA, that is definitely what is going on.

  62. Blue404Seats on

“lets bring back 1994 team since the Devs are doing the same with ‘95″…..

hah i was thinking the same, nice observation…. another reason why the devs are going downhill. Wouldnt be surprised if they signed Ken “DUI” Daneyko to a 1 year contract and pay him with beer.

  63. Doodie Machetto on

We could drop 5 million on Rozsi, a million on Vorros, but nothing on Kaspar?

  64. Man. 5 mill per for Rozsival? Sather got had IMO.

That Jamtin deal had been reported for a couple of weeks in Sweden.

  65. Perhaps we could think uber positive and thing next year will be quiet but next years free agency will be the splash? The amount of good talent free next year is much better than this years crop.

  66. Cliff-I believe we are one of MANY teams making offers to Orpik.

Jason-where are you getting the $1m # from?

  67. Sather was doing a good job until the Rosy signing. And I just though about it, yeah I’m more pissed at the money now. 5 mil is way too much for this guy. 1 mil for Voros is a good deal considering he played 1st or 2nd line for a bit last year and did pretty well.

  68. The more I think about it,even though I was upset at first, I dont get the entire Rozsival contract crying game. Look at the market. The market dictates the value of each player. When Bryce Salvador gets 2.9 Mill over 4 years, what do you expect them to give Rozsival?

  69. “The more I think about it,even though I was upset at first, I dont get the entire Rozsival contract crying game. Look at the market. The market dictates the value of each player. When Bryce Salvador gets 2.9 Mill over 4 years, what do you expect them to give Rozsival?”

Thats a valid point. I still would’ve rather seen it at 4 mil. Doodie said it earlier, we shot outselves in the foot with the Toots signing.

  70. Some perspective…

    are thes comparable numbers?

    games 411
    goals 35
    assists 160
    points 195
    pp goals 11
    sh goals 0
    gw goals 7

    vs.

    games 479
    goals 46
    assists 127
    points 173
    pp goals 22
    sh goals 2
    gw goals 11

    are they?

  71. Rangers just signed Redden. Redden will get 6.5 mill over 6 years. Don’t like it.

  72. New York Rangers sign UFA defenceman Wade Redden to a six-year contract worth $6.5 million

  73. Cancelled czechs on

screw sather. 20 mill for Rosival and now 6.5 mill per year for washed up Redden, who was TERRIBLE and slow the last half of last season.

next he’ll sign that pos jagr again.

  74. REDDEN IS AT LEAST A REAL PLAYER! GO FOR ORPIK! Give us Jagr Slats and we may have a team next year.

  75. i hate the rosie signing.i would much rather pay up for orpik or campbell than rosie.. looks like we signed redden not sure on terms

  76. We overpaid, but not by that much compared to what other people were asking for. Other teams I heard were giving a little under what the Rangers asked for. So it was either pay Redden that money or lose out on him.

  77. Devils had a good day. Rolston will help big time with the offense.Holik is still a good checker. Don’t get the Salvador deal though. Too many years too much money.

  78. Ruchin – at least quit posting your link on every post. it’s already in your name for those interested. very obnoxious
