Rangers and Jagr still talking; Sundin in Sweden

47

As I mentioned before, it’s highly unlikely that any of the Rangers’ major free agents re-sign with the team before noon tomorrow. But there at least seems to be some dialogue.

J.P. Barry, who along with Pat Brisson represents Jaromir Jagr, said in an e-mail this afternoon that the Rangers and the captain are still talking — with length of a contract and bonus clauses presumably being a major part of the conversation (if you haven’t read Bob McKenzie’s piece on the new rules for 35-and-over contracts, you can “read it here”:http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/bob_mckenzie/?id=242079. A brief summary: the Rangers won’t have the luxury of creative salary cap accounting that they had with Brendan Shanahan).

Meanwhile, Barry also noted Mats Sundin is in Sweden, which is important only in that it means the Rangers don’t have an elaborate recruiting trip planned for the free agent center anytime soon.

I had been told otherwise at one point today,  but the Rangers replied that it wasn’t true, saying a) they aren’t bringing Sundin in for a recruiting trip; and b) if Sundin was coming in on his own, he’d at least let them know so he could have a look at practice facility.

That’s not to say that Sundin is off the Rangers’ radar (nor does it mean someone else might not be on a scouting mission for him). But my understanding is the center is still contemplating his future, and might not make a decision one way or the other for some time.

Obviously if I hear evidence to the contrary, I’ll let you know.

Meanwhile, at the risk of Bob McKenzie overexposure, “the TSN analyst also floats the possibility”:http://watch.tsn.ca/nhl/clip63718#clip63718of teams like the Rangers acquiring a defenseman not through free agency, but via a trade. Among the backliners salary-heavy teams might be looking to move: Mathieu Schneider out of Anaheim, Edmonton’s Joni Pitkanen, and Tampa Bay’s Dan Boyle.

If nothing else, something to keep an eye on…

Based on Tsn’s story,PASS!!! on Jagr for any contract over 5mill per year.NHL radio said earlier today that Sundin may not decide what he wants to do until after the season has already started.Kind of like Neidermeyer and Salane did last year,so another PASS!!!!. I still say, bring in Ryder,Hagman to play the wings and add korpi and Byers to that mix.On the defense, sign Hainsey,Orpik,or Commodore and lets get it on!

Almost forgot,Avery is a must! He is a much better valur than Malone at 4.5million.

  2. Yes, bring on Hainsey, Commodore and Orpik!

On a side note, can you imagine if the Rangers ever had a deep playoff run with both Paul Mara and Mike Commodore? It would be a beard fest.

  3. I saw this over on hfboards, seems like some fun for tomorrow. If you had to choose 3 free agents to sign, including Rangers fa’s who would you pick? I am sure the Rangers will be signing more than three, but what the heck.

I got Jagr, Avery, and Orpik.

  4. Avery orpik streit.

I can’t wait to see what happens thats for sure. I have mixed feelings about jager. I feel like if he comes back you have to get a good big centermen for him. If he doesn’t then you can go in a totally different direction with the young players. I dont know its a make or break year. We will either be right in it again or this could set us back a few years. Avery and orpik are musts.

  5. Jagr, Avery, Streit… since Malone is off the table, those are my 3.

Anyway, say the words “Joni Pitkanen” and people think “PP QB,” meanwhile he scored 1 all of last year and 12 in his life. He is a waste of ice time, and Marek Malik looks incredible next to him.

Every single person so far has said Avery, and so will I.

My wishlist 3 would be Avery, Naslund, and Orpik. My realistic 3 are probably Ryder, Rolston, and Orpik.

  7. If we’re going to trade for any Tampa Bay D, it should be Paul Ranger, just on general principle.

Boyle would be a nice addition, though.

  8. Why did I sign here again? aka Staal Wart on

    my vote is…
    Darius Kasperitis
    Bobby Holik
    oh…and
    Karel Rachunek

    haha

  9. Suspect that Campbell is in Slat’s crosshairs but the Boyle thing would be better IMO. TB needs to back peddle on some salary commitments. Maybe they take Sister Christian back from us. Sonds like Orpik is going to Buffalo.

  10. Why did I sign here again? aka Staal Wart on

when does this frenzy actually begin…
    12 am EST or 12 Pacific…
    When…?
    Do I stay up?

I just got done checking Eklund…so that I know what definitely will not happen…(e13)

T’was the night before Free Agency and all through the NHL not a phone was silent for very long.
The Rangers will be looking to add some defense, while trying to figure out if Jagr still has enough offense.
With me by my computer, holding my breath with each rumor in thehopes that St. Avery will be signed and bring his humor.
I dashed to the Rangers Report, TSN and the like in hopes to see who Slats has i his sights.
As I cicked refresh on my browser to get the latest updates, I could hear Slats say, on Staal, on Rozi, on Avery and Shanny, on Hank & Valli and Gomer & Drury.
And I heard Slats exclaim as he hung up the phone…Happy Free Aency to all and to NY a Stanley Cup!!

  14. Yeah, letting Schneider go was a bad move HOWEVER, he was being pretty greedy if I remember correctly, although it would have been better to pay him than Tin Man Malakhov. Ok, enough of those days.

  15. Boy all you have to do is look at you tube clips on what avery brings to the table and there is no replacing that. With that extra cap room sign him. Hes 28 its not like hes 35. It makes more and more sense. You cant replace grit and toughness and if you can play like that, theres no stopping you.

Sign avery and orpik. Get a tough partner for orpik. Maybe center avery with duby because they worked so well with jagar but have someone else. I dont know just throwing it out there. But man it would be a mistake not signing avery.

  16. Orpik and Staal would be dynamite together, keep Tyutin/Girardi together, and get Hainsey and have him play with Commodore and/or Potter.

I liked the effort of the Avery/Dubi/Cally line last year. What a pain to play against.

  18. Thanks for responding to my question regarding McCabe yesterday. Interesting takes. Whoever suggested Backman and a pick…pass that ‘stuff’ this way pal.

Well, happy 7/1 everybody. Today..today..today..We are the luckiest fans in the world..world..world. Today..Marek Malik.ik..ik, is officially no longer a NY Ranger..er..er. Hip hip horrayyyyy!

Anyone wanna pick HIS destination today? I’m sayin that JD gives him a shot in STL on the cheap.

The 3 I’d sign… Hossa, Campbell, Avery. May as well pick all 3 guys that will be the most overpaid in the league eh?

I disagree w/ those who say we shouldn’t have let schneider walk. My oh my how we forget how many times he’d be on the ice for goals against. He was soft in his own end… and if memory serves, his bomb from the point was similiar to that of Maras… always hitting more board then net.

  20. I won’t cheer for anyone in a devils uni. I won’t boo him either. Maybe I’ll just skip NYR/NJD games this season.

Looks to me like we don’t have to worry about overpaying campbell. Orpik’s going to be well overpaid also if you factor in he’s looking for a NTC on a 5/6yr deal. That’s dangerous to say the least.

Streit @ $3mil isn’t a bad idea. Orpik & Streit or Orpik and Redden. The 1st is probably the better bet. But if Slats has a chubby for Redden…meet your newest Blueshirt.

Avery’s gonna get his 4yr/$16mil. Not from NYR though. He’ll be the most hated & overpaid. Whatever.

If Sundin’s choices are really between DET and NYR, that’s a REALLY tough decision eh? Best team or best city?

  21. Cheers Beer – beng in the UK i’ve been up for several hours and read them. Sounds like Uncle Larry and his cronies have been busy at their typewriters this morning.

I use the following website to monitor the news, it occasionally picks up some Texas Rangers news stories but is generally quite good:

    http://www.newsnow.co.uk/h/Sport/NHL/New+York+Rangers

  22. Thanks for links Beer. Wouldn’t be exciting to see Sundin & Jagr playing in the same line at Broadway (I don’t think it’s such a bad idea to sign both for one year)? It would. From the D’s I like Redden & Streit. Campbell is a no I guess. Say goodbye to Rozi as well, $20M/4y? Come on. I’d hate to see Avery in other than Blueshirt uniform and I just hope I won’t see Shanny in Devs jersey. GO ON SATHER!

  23. you bet fella’s. UK, you’re lucky man. You can get the news first!

Big surprise you say? The only thing that would surprise me is if Hank, Gomer, Dru, or Staal were traded. Anyone else, I wouldn’t be surprised. That includes Dubi and anyone in htfd btw.

This is one of the greatest days of the year. And on top of it, my boss in on vacation.

    Jagr signs a 3 year 24million deal…SURPRISE!

Beer, interresting your ‘pick 3′ are hossa, Campbell, and Avery. I just think they need more presence on defense and Campbell’s a great puck mover but his defense has gotten worse over the years (although his destructive hit on Umberger shows what he’s capable of). I would take Naslund over Hossa because they have similar skill sets and Nazz will be less sought after. Avery’s surprising because you talk about keeping and letting him go both so not sure where you actually stand.

  25. I was hearing Hossa to Boston, 12 yrs, $100mm.

BTW, Sam mentioned something above about “a scouting mission for Sundin.” Is that for real? The guy has been in the league like 15yrs and someone needs to scout him? I don’t get that.

Damn I hope Jagr is sent packing, Shanny too, and Avery stays. Would much rather have an Orpik, Campbell-type than Rozy as my go to D-man, btw.
