If you can’t make the most of this one…

I seriously doubt the NHL has consciously tried to sway the outcome of its playoff series to arrive at this outcome. That said, I doubt anyone in the league office is complaining “about a Detroit-Pittsburgh final”:http://scores.espn.go.com/nhl/recap?gameId=280519009.

Because let’s face it: with or without the Rangers, these playoffs have been good, but not great. Only three series have gone to a Game 7, and all of those were in the first round; and the only two Game 6s in the ensuing two rounds were the result of last-gasp efforts from teams rallying from 3-0 deficits.

Given the level both the Pens and Red Wings have played at, I can’t imagine one team running too far away from the other. And whereas I originally thought the Wings were the clear-cut favorite, I am now not so sure.

Either way, I’ll be watching. Hopefully, plenty of others will be, too….

  1. This is it. If Pittsburgh can stay with Detroit, they’re legit. If they can beat ’em, no one can label them lucky. Here’s to hoping it’s Hockeytown in 4.

  2. “Doodie, yeah man, that is a good story. Sounds like you have a good fiance on your hands there, don’t Fug it up,”

Ha, yeah, thanks for the advice.

forget Gaborik. No show in the playoffs, often injured, and small.

And the people clamoring about Valli: you’re right, we probably won’t get a backup like him for his price, but why not upgrade the position, and get a real vetern backup, and pay him a few extra dollars. Potential choices: Lalime, Hedberg, Boucher, Kolzig, and Conklin. Lalime and Kolzig will probably betoo expensive, but the other three are great choices.

  3. SAM,

youre post isnt clear. you Doubt the NHL has tried to effect the outcome of the playoffs, or you doubt they havent tried.

    p.

  4. Am I the only Rangers fan now hoping the Pens pull it out?? I’d rather lose to the team that proves best than one that gets humiliated, because if the Pens get humiliated, what does that say about the Rangers?

  5. doodie/nasty and other watch afficianados…

This is off topic on a rangers blog, but have you heard of a watch company called Ravo or Rado? My father passed a couple of years ago and left me one of their watches. It looks really nice, and I’m kinda afraid to touch/wear it, but if you’re experts, maybe you can tell me if I’m off base here…

    oh yeah… Wings in 6.

  6. I just want good hockey. I don’t judge my team based on the performances of others, nor do I harbor any hatred for teams that dispatch us do to our own shortcomings.

And for the record, that’s how I feel about about the Rangers against the Pens. We could have won, but for our own shortcomings.

Therefore, I just want the hockey to be good. The games have been good, even if the series have lacked drama. I want a long series full of great games. I don’t care who wins.

  7. Jeever, it is Rado, and they make some very nice looking watches. Very pricey as well. If you have a make and model number I would be happy to find out for you. I would say hold on to it from sentimental reasons, and definitely wear it. It is amazing how many conversations a watch can start.

  8. Nasty,

I have it at home, I’ll have to check it out and try to let you know…

See that’s the problem. I’m worried it might start a conversation along the lines of “Nice watch, now take it off and give it to me. Now lay down on the ground face down…”.

  9. I’m the first to admit that my attitude is a classic case of cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face, but I am solidly convinced the league conciously manipulates games. Why? Because the league did almost everything possible to skew games 3 and 4 towards the Rangers in the Rangers/Pens series. The fix was in for the Pitt win from the get-go – the league just didn’t realize how bad NY would stink it up and blow it so soon. I would give blood for Detroit to knock the Pen’s d!#^$ in the dirt, but given the Dallas spasm at the end, I’m convinced the league will give this one to Pitt in 5 or 6.

Card-carrying member of “The NHL is rigged” club.

  10. HAAAAAAA, yeah man. I hear you. Well maybe just wear it to a wedding or somewhere that you have to get dressed up. If you are just going to the mall or shopping leave that thing at home. I totally understand where you are coming from.

  11. Its going to be interesting to see how Pit fares against some shutdown defensemen in Lidstrom and Rafalski.

I’ve lived in Pittsburgh and hate the fans there. I don’t want to drink the Crosby/Malkin kool-aid. I’m praying for Detroit in 5!

  12. as much as I hate to admit it (it goes against my blinding love for my team), Pittsburgh and Detroit are probably 2 of the most purely talented teams in the league right now. It should be a fun and exciting series. I hope it is, because I need to get my hockey fix in for the LONG summer, without any real sports.

for the watch, yeah its definitely a special occasion type thing. I’m too clumsy/clueless to wear it on a regular basis and not damage or lose it.

  13. Gaborik is a playoff gamer. He disappeared this year, but that was a blip, if you look at his historical numbers, about a ppg pace.

  14. “And the people clamoring about Valli: you’re right, we probably won’t get a backup like him for his price, but why not upgrade the position, and get a real vetern backup, and pay him a few extra dollars. I want Vally back, but if not then I say we go that way or see what LeNeveu’s got (we have to sign him first I believe). I’m not sure Wiikman is an NHL calibre goalie, but maybe see what he’s got too. LeNeveu was a top goalie prospect if I’m not mistaken and him and Allaire have a history. If Vally walks, which we should never let happen, then try those guys out. If that doesn’t work then sign a vet backup.

  15. “Gaborik is a playoff gamer. He disappeared this year, but that was a blip, if you look at his historical numbers, about a ppg pace.”

He had a major hip injury. Thats why he didn’t do anything this year. It wasn’t revealed until after the playoffs.

  16. “I want Vally back, but if not then I say we go that way or see what LeNeveu’s got (we have to sign him first I believe). I’m not sure Wiikman is an NHL calibre goalie, but maybe see what he’s got too. LeNeveu was a top goalie prospect if I’m not mistaken and him and Allaire have a history. Comments like this show that they misunderstand why I want a veteran backup. I don’t care about the skill quality of the backup netminder – Hank plays 65+ games. I care about Henrik’s growth and improvement as a goaltender. Rookies and AHL lifers can’t teach him a thing, they don’t push him, they don’t have any advice or tips to help him continue to grow. None of our guys in Hartford are going to take Hank’s job. Therefore, our focus should be making Hank as good as possible. A veteran backup can help him, ESPECIALLY with his consistency issues.

  17. I’m really interested to see how Crosby/Malkin/Fleury would respond to being put on the ropes, down a few games. Say what you will, I don’t think they’ve faced any stiff competition yet at all…But we saw Crosby and Malkin get riled up pretty good when we won our game. I’d love to see them break down emotionally. I’d love to see Fluery that pirahna faced tw4t get completely shelled in the first game. I hope I get to see that deer in the headlights look in Crosby’s eyes when Pens are down by a couple of goals with a minute left in what will ulitmately be their final game. Crosby will grow up and be one of the best ever probably… but, I don’t want to see him get a cup yet.

  18. I know what you were getting at, I just feel no matter who the backup is, they should play more. Henke is being treated like Brodeur now and it bothers me. I’d rather see him play 60-65 consistently solid games then play 75 where hes hit or miss depending on the night.

  19. Also, can we talk about teams that could potentially lure Jagr away from NY? Teams that need him more than us and will have much more money to spen than us?

    -San Jose?
-DET or PIT, whoever loses takes Jagr for the run next year?

    Ugh.

Also, I know I’m late on this but is anyone else really surprised that the Ranger game at Yankee Stadium is going to fall through? Of course something that cool could never really happen to Ranger fans. Of course not.

  20. How much do you think it would be to get Kolzig for a backup up Valli falls through. I just like the guy.

  21. reginald dunlop on

these playoffs have been boring……still trying to figure out the officiating and the selection of some of these clowns into the semifinals…..constantly they have an input into the game when they shouldnt….well at least the league is happy, theyve got cindy in the finals, now Im rooting for drake, maltby , cleary to rip his head off…

  22. I might be mistaken, but I think Kolzig might be looking for a starting or platooning role. I hope I’m wrong, I think he could be an awesome back-up for Henrik, and teach him how to hang tough. Kolzig’s gotta be one of the most long-suffering goalies, who’s made the best of his time in the NHL, even though he was surrounded by little/no talent.

I just hope he has no grudges with Jagr.

  23. True, very true. If he is willing to be a back up, and would accept that role, I think he could be a really good one. The guy was a very good goalie for years, and even went to a cup final. I have always enjoyed his interviews and respected him as a player. Does a lot of charities. I think he could be a great fit if we need a back up and the money is right.

  24. It definitely made me like him more. Ha. How could you not like a guy after a comment like that.

  25. Speed Ranger on

Kolzig….. I like him too, but did I miss something, is Valiquette gone, or are you guys thinking he’s headed out? (He is ready to be somebody’s #1…)

  26. Ham Hands Bill on

Please…..no Kolzig. Sign Valiquette to a 2 year deal and then go get some defenseman.

  27. “Kolzig….. I like him too, but did I miss something, is Valiquette gone, or are you guys thinking he’s headed out? (He is ready to be somebody’s #1…)”

Vally is not a #1. He’s 30 and was a career backup/AHLer. Hes not going to out of nowhere become a #1 when he only played a handful of games this year. Playing 12 games is different than playing 65. I think he serves the purpose as a backup because he’s always ready when called on, but its a different story when it comes to getting that kind of play every night from the guy.

Also I think these playoffs have been awesome so far (except for the Rangers not still playing…but they really didn’t deserve it). I don’t know if you guys watch the Western Conference games, but they have all been really exciting with lots of big hits and great goals. Also the goaltending has been pretty amazing as well.

  28. Will they push Henrik though? Probably not. But at the same time Renney and the coaches let Henke run the show instead of pulling him when he is playing shitty and not giving it his all.

  29. Valli is 30 and is mature enough to take a #1 spot. PLus he’s had one of the best goalie coaches in the league tutoring him the past 2-3 years, so is he worthy of a starting spot, Yes. Not in NYC, but on another team that had horrible goaltending all yaer, and there are definitely a few teams out there that are looking for a guy like him.

And why wouldnt he walk if he was offered 1.5, and a starting spot? you guys are crazy thinking Kolzig wants to be Hanks backup. Maybe he would go for it, but with huge bucks involved, and bucks we do not have for a back up goaltender.

And the other thing to remember is this: He had a stellar “back-up Goalie” Year, he is goign to be 31, and no matter what he says about playing with and behind Hank, he wants to be a starting goaltender, period, as they all do.

PLus he’s a monster of a guy, 6’4 and will throw punches no less. SO unless his family is against a move, or he has some odd happiness being a lifetime back up, if he gets an offer, ANY offer from another club to be a #1, he’s gone, and then WE are up shits creak looking for a “veteran” backup costing up to 1 mil or more vs the 750 we pay Valli now, who plays 5-10 games all year.

I’ll say it again, THIS is goign to be a very sticky situation to deal with come July 1st.

  30. actually he’s 6’7″. haha. I think Vally should get 15-20 games a year at least. I don’t care about Henrik and how many he wants to play, at the end of the year he’s broken down (hurt his knees in the World Champs), so rest him up during the year. Maybe rest him in the 1st half then play him more down the stretch. It would help his inconsistency as well if he felt the pressure of knowing Vally could take the spot.

  31. Olie the goalie is a very good veteran goalie and one of the few goalies ever spoken of as a great team player. Not only will he push Hank to be better, he could actually come and play for a long stretch if, go forbid, Hank has a problem. There is no doubt we should get him or someone like him if he is willing to be behind Hank and we can afford him.

  32. Dan – you’re close to the only one who wants the pens to win. I will never root for a divisional rival to win it. with the negative pecking order of teams Idon’t want to win being

    Isles
    Devs
    Philly
    Pitt

I won’t watch games between them especially in playoffs. I fully expect the pens to win but hope I’m wrong. Still remember the fans in early 90’s with the 1940 chants and signs. I think they’ll win this year and at least 2 more in near future.

    Go Wings

  33. Nasty who was the other youth in the trade you talked about in previous thread. girardi? the deal would involve lots of picks as well. And didn’t Gaborik have a hip problem.

  34. I Hate Crybabies on

I’ll pass on this series. I’ve had my fill of the crybaby for one season thanks. Go wings

  35. I don’t really know that much about Kolzig but there must be something with the guy if mgmt was willing to let him retire after being a fan favorite forever.

No one here has mentioned Hank getting pulled in the third period of the Sweden semifinal game or that he didn’t start the bronze medal game……

  36. put me in the nhl is slightly fixed column. It’s going to be hard for Detroit to beat the babies & the blind biased zebras. But I’m hoping to see the babies cry real tears when they lose this upcoming series. That sight will last a lifetime, and buttman will have his usual egg on his face for trying to slant the playoffs to the playpen babies. And it way past time for colon campbell to resign. Let him try coaching again in this disaster he has helped create. He should apply for the panthers job so he can be with his son.

  37. Gaborik? I go away for three days to recover from “bad hockey” nausea of conference finals and I come back to people wanting the guy who hasn’t ever shown up in a playoff series yet????

I was one of the “get rid of Jags and move in another direction” faction…..

    BUT NOT IN THAT DIRECTION!!!!!

  38. onecupin67years on

Spring is here,,nice weather this weekend, stay home and watch hockey when its 70-80 degrees outside? No thanks.it works for the NFL but not the NHL.Wake up Bettman. And I have had enough of Doc emmrick’s high pitched voice.

  39. last night in vacation had an argument with a guy in a
pens tshirt jersey and told him his Crosby shirt fit right in in Disney with all the babies. Then i went on to tell him if he was such a big fan he would not be on vacation during the cup. He did not like me too much

  40. SeamusORiley on

Sam, could you say with absolute certainty that the officiating did not favor the Pens in their series v the Rangers and/or v the Flyers?

  41. IF Valli leaves for a starting position somewhere, what does everyone think about Ty Conklin? HE’s free after this series is over, and the pens more than likely will not have the cash to sing him? Thoughts? Just a thought

  42. there isnt a single excuse for any ranger fan to be cheering for pittsburgh in the finals. the talk about wanting the team that beat your team to win the cup so you don’t look bad is completely retarded. the penguins are in your division, they knocked you out of the playoffs, you cannot cheer for them as a ranger fan. what if the isles were in the same place as the pens right now? would you be cheering for them too? gimme a break. cheering for rival divisional teams after your team has been knocked out is a joke.

I’ve got a hard time thinking pitt can win in detroit. that said, im hoping detroit blasts pitt in 5 or 6.

  43. Sam, could you say with absolute certainty that the officiating did not favor the Pens in their series v the Rangers and/or v the Flyers?

    ……..

What is the point of this question?

  44. Where are you guys getting your facts about Gaborik not showing up in the playoffs? Oh wait you don’t look at the facts. If you did you’d see that before this year he had 17 points (9 goals) in 18 games in the 03 playoffs and 4 points (3 goals) in 5 games last year. This year he sucked because he was playing with a injured hip. He had surgery to repair a torn labrum and relieve pressure on the hip. He says it didn’t affect his play, but down the stretch I think you could see it was catching up to him.

  45. It was Prucha, Callahan, a dman from hartford and a pick, for Gaborik, another roster player, and a pick.

  46. And also I still don’t get how some of you guys think Vally could be a number one, or moreso that teams will pay him to be. I think he could potentially be a #1, but the fact is he’s 30 and hasn’t seen much NHL action in his career yet. That alone sets off a warning flag for teams. Not to mention they would want to pay him all that much because they can’t judge how he might do based on the 12 games he played this year. He never really played in a string of games in a row. He’d make a start here and there and that was it. You can’t predict how that will turn out over a full season so I don’t see other teams taking the chance of looking at him to fight for a #1 spot, but rather just look at him as a #2 that can play 15 or maybe 20 games a year.

  47. I don’t know how I feel about Prucha and Callahan for Gaborik. That is pretty much the trade, forgetting about picks and minor league players. How do other people feel about this? Also, it is not a definite thing, but something I heard from an insider.

  48. I’d do it. Callahan is a 3rd line wing at best and Prucha could turn into a decent scorer, but neither is as explosive as Gaborik. Hes a 1st line winger that is relatively young and despite some injury problems, he could be a 100 pt/50 goal guy when put with the right guy (Gomez). I’d jump on that in a heartbeat.

  49. I’m not just making stuff up either, like people do on here sometimes when they are bored or whatever. It is something I legitimately heard. It is not too far fetched either.

  50. It doesnt matter what WE think of Valli’s performance, fact is he had a great Backup goalie season. And a team who had horrible goaltending last year, may want to bring in two #2’s and let them fight it out who starts in camp and pre-season. Im just saying, Valli for 1.5 to a team in need: he’s going to take the offer. And you know Sather isnt going to pony up that much for him.

Cally and Prucha for Gaborik? I honestly would hate to give either of them up as there’s potential in both of them to do great things, but potential only goes so far. Maybe Callahan and someone else for GAborik, plus the other incentives? MAybe hang on to Prucha til early/mid season, if he’s not performing, trade him away?

I’m on the fence about it. But then again, with everything we specualte about, SAther will prob throw a wrench in the machine and do trades for people were not even thinking about.

  51. I’m sure the pick would be a number 1. key is would he be healthy with the hip. thnk Bure and his knee. that is a lot of cap $ he’ll be costing and if he is not healthy ….

  52. Also if we got Gaborik in that deal, I’d consider looking at Ladislav Nagy to fill a 2nd line winger role. He’s probably come at a cheaper price (something around 3 mil maybe) due to his injury from last year, but he was really turning into quite the winger who could provide playmaking abilities and a scoring touch on the 2nd line wing, maybe even 1st. Not many people talk about him because of the teams he’s played on the last few years, but hes a pretty good player for the price.

  53. I can see Valley getting an offer from a team that wants 30 or so games from him where their goalie is either not as settled in as number1 or has an injury history.

  54. I honestly haven’t been watching much playoff hockey at all…for the first time in a real long time…
I’m just sick of the league, especially the officials. I won’t tune in for much of the since I’ll be in St. John for most of it…I really just need a break…

  55. Drury Gomez Gaborik
    Straka Nylander Jagr
    Dawes Dubi Korpi
    Sjostrom Betts Orr

Ha, too bad that couldn’t happen.

  56. For 1 year. That last lineup I posted for 1 year. Actually, I forgot about Avery. hmmmm.

    Drury Gomez Gaborik
    Avery Nylander Jagr
    Dawes Dubi Korpi
    Sjostrom Betts Orr

    Staal Orpik/Redden
    Girardi Tyutin
    Sanguinetti Mara

  57. Now, before people start jumping down my throat, I know it wouldn’t happen, but I was just saying. Have Nylander and Jagr be the second line, could be one of the best second lines in hockey.

  58. I don’t know how I feel about Prucha and Callahan for Gaborik……Also, it is not a definite thing, but something I heard from an insider.

    …..

I really doubt that is on the table. A 3rd liner and a guy who can’t crack the lineup… where do I sign?

No way thats even a chance in hell, unless that “Dman” in Hartford is Bobby.

  59. OK,I’m a Rangers fan first and a hockey fan 2nd.So like most people I can give a shit who wins or who’s in the finals.Unlike football where as most football fans watch the superbowl wheather their team is in it or not.Basketball same thing who cares, baseball….well baseball is just to boring and losing fans everyday, just check the ratings and attendence(except for those few MAJOR baseball cities.
I’ll watch some of it from time to time, but really who cares?
All that said I’d love to see Detroit sweep the (crybabies).

  60. why do we want nylander back for another 3 years, there is a reason he wasn’t signed long term.

id love to have gaborik but gonna have to give up better players for him

and while everyone is always all over prucha, what has dawes done that has shown that he is a better player than prucha. you put prucha on gomez’s wing and let him play on the pp he will get you 25-30 goals

  61. Mikey, Valli is nobody’s #1. Anywhere. There are too many guys that are better than him. WAY too many.

I know Kolzig wouldn’t be a backup, I was just listing a pipedream on him. Lalime will probably have a starting job somewhere next season too.

But why not drop an extra 500k on a better, veteran backup. Conklin, Hedberg, Thibeault even. But Valliquette is just a placeholder for when Hank gets a night off. He adds nothing else.

  62. If we only sign jagr, and we don’t get any other forwards on the free agent market or trade, what does our roster look like for next year, assuming we resign Avery.

If we let straka and shanny go.

  63. What Dawes has done to show he is more valuable than Prucha:

    1) has shown that he has a much more solid game defensively
    2) can actually get hit without getting knocked off the puck
    3) can actually knock guys off the puck when he hits them, instead of bouncing off of them
    4) is a MUCH better passer of the puck
    5) can score goals at even strength
    6) meshes better with more linemates.

    To name a few.

  64. Avery Dubi Jagr
    Prucha Gomez Dawes
    Callahan Drury Korpi
    Sjostrom Betts Orr

no particular order of importance there, just throwing out some names. Definitely not cup contender material right there. We need a scoring winger that can net 40-50 playing with Gomez, and we need a physical forward as well.

  65. Doodie I am with you on that about Dawes. I want so badly for Prucha to be what we thought he was going to be. I say he gets one more chance with legitimate ice time. After that, he gots to go.

  66. I don’t know why people are so down on Prucha… Its not exactly his fault he got thrown out of the line-up. Renney’s notoriously loyal/stubborn with his line-ups, and Prucha was the odd man out. You put him on a line with somebody fast and decent, he could ring up points. Or at least have the opportunity for it.

  67. Dawes has not had an offensive season like Prucha had in his first two season and this year Prucha was totally misused. Prucha would be a lot better player if we had never gotten shanny. hopefully this year he gets a shot intsead of bringing in another over the hill player who wants second line ice time and money when he no longer deserves it

  68. I don’t think it is so much that we are down on Prucha, but I feel like Dawes really made more of his time this year. He played well to start the season, then he kind of tailed off and was sent down to Hartford, but when he came back he was pretty much noticeable for the rest of the season, only to kind of disappear in the playoffs. Even with the ups and downs, he still made more of his time than Prucha did.

  69. If Prucha was a little better on the other side of the puck I would really not want to see him moved. I think he deserves one more fair chance on one of the top 2 lines. If he doesn’t produce on a line with Gomez then he needs to be moved. He is the exact kind of player that should be able to play well with Gomez.

  70. Dawes also wasn’t given the PP time that Prucha was his first year.

Prucha also spent a large portion of alst year on the 2nd line and did nothing then either.

  71. I like th idea of maybe going for Conklin? Maybe.
Hedberg too isnt so bad. Again I would keep Valli but we’ll see what he’s asking and what he awnts come July 1st

I know Valli aint a #1 in our division, but other teams looking to split the duties or who are unsure of who is going ot be #1, he may get the pay raise with 30+ games.

My whole point about Valli being, Sather and Renney better not Fuck this one up. Casue it’s an easy fix (keep Valli with a smalle raise, or have two goalies your DEFINITELY goign to go after and make a point to sign)

  72. “I don’t think it is so much that we are down on Prucha, but I feel like Dawes really made more of his time this year. He played well to start the season, then he kind of tailed off and was sent down to Hartford, but when he came back he was pretty much noticeable for the rest of the season, only to kind of disappear in the playoffs. Even with the ups and downs, he still made more of his time than Prucha did.”

    Bingo.

I love Prucha. But there is no denying that he just didn’t have it this season. Period. If we can deal him, I’m all for it.

  73. If we can deal Prucha I am all for it, but it has to be in a package to land a definite 40 goal or more scorer. It can’t be for another Prucha type player. If he was part of a package to land Gaborik I would do it.

  74. I like Drury a lot. I think as the season went on he definitely got better and more comfortable. I wonder though, if the organization knew how fast Dubi would fit in, if they would have signed both Drury and Gomez? On the defensive side of the puck, Drury is one of the, if not the best player we have. I am just throwing that out there.

  75. Yeah, I agree with that as well. For a defender, that would work. But I don’t think we are going to get a great defender for just Prucha. That would have to be part of a package as well.

  76. HOCKEYMANRANGERS on

As far as early talk about Pitt and the Wings. I guess I am a true hockey fan when I say. I don’t care who wins I just hope it goes 7 games so I have more hockey to watch.

  77. Zip mentions Rolston, Ryder, and Vermette on his site as possible replacements for Straka and Shanny. Rolston is getting up there in age although he can put some goals in the net. I’d be more for getting Ryder or Vermette because they are younger and on the upside of their careers.

  78. F the Shittburgh Stankuins!

detroit in 4, get this season over with already.

I’m actually quite impressed with The Wings play this postseason. ANd hte ULTIMATe humiliation to Cindy, Lurch, and Fag Boy bettman would be to have the Pens wiped out in 4 or 5 games (4-0, 4-1) Give them a taste of there own medicine.

PS did anyone else read that 12 of Shittsburgh 26 player roster this year will be UFA, RFA or gone? I read it this monring. So at the very least, Pitts will so far only have 3 Players definitely returning next season Crosby, Malkin, and MA fleury. Good luck trying to play a season with half your cap money spent on 3 players.

  79. “As far as early talk about Pitt and the Wings. I guess I am a true hockey fan when I say. I don’t care who wins I just hope it goes 7 games so I have more hockey to watch.”

That’s what I’m saying. Exciting games too.

I’d consider Ryder, and Vermette is an interesting choice.

Rolston is too old. I’d take him for one year only, if only to hold a place for Cherepanov or ::drools:: Kovalchuk.

  80. Mikey, I have been saying that for a while, that when the bill came due, they were dead.

I think that’s why they went for it this year with Hossa.

  81. 07-08 Stats GP G A Pts.

    Rolston, 35 years old- 81 31 28 59

    Ryder, 28 years old – 70 14 17 31

    Vermette,24 years old- 81 24 29 53

  82. “But Valliquette is just a placeholder for when Hank gets a night off. He adds nothing else.”

Thats if Renney lets Henke run the show. I think if Renney would step up and tell Henke when he plays and when he doesn’t, then this won’t be an issue. And Vally could only be a #1 in TB or LA, both have young goalies that are soon to come up to start though. Ramo is almost ready and Ersberg really impressed me and a lot of others (similar to Lundqvist since he also kinda came outta nowhere). outside of that I dont see him better than anyone elses #1.

as for Dawes, he’s much better defensively and sees the ice so much better than Prucha. I love Petr, but every time he has the puck hes full steam ahead down the ice. Dawes slows down a bit when he has to and looks to open up the ice with a cross ice pass. I really think Prucha jumped on to the scene for 2 reasons. First nobody knew about him and he was on the PP where people didnt expect much. Second, the game was a lot more open and softer back then. Now even with the new rules, players have adjusted and the game is now more physical than it was back then so he can’t get open in the slot like he used to. I want to see him do well, but I think maybe giving him a different place to go to, especially out west, might help his game since he’ll get more playing time.

  83. Is it true that Glen Anderson is a blue ribbon prize winner in bobbing for bragiole? Not bashing it, but I was just remembering a conversation on here a while back. If that is the reason he is not in the Hall of Fame, it is pretty Fugged up.

  84. Doodie Machetto are you serious? Why spend more money when the Rangers already have the best backup in the league? You’re joking right? Or did you refuse to watch the games he played in?

  85. And I mentioned Ladislav Nagy. Whats your guys opinion on him? He had 56 points in like 50 games 2 years ago.

  86. Nagy looks pretty good. He needs a supporting cast though. Maybe a change of scenery would do him some good.

  87. Ok so I did a quick look at what would happen if A) we re-sign Jagr and B) the Gaborik trade happens (which is like a 1% chance). Now this is also involving re-signing Avery and Mara for amounts that might not be accurate. I figure Avery would get 3.5 even though he wants me and Mara would take 1.75.

Pretty much if Jagr signs for 6, which is unlikely, then we’ll have about 4 mil to spend on a D-man. Now this is where it gets tricky, do we sign a checking d-man and hope Tyutin picks up his offensive game as well as Staal or Pock, or do we sign a puck moving D man. Or option #3 which is what I would like is to not bother signing Jagr and try to sign both with the 7+ million you save.

This is 100% not going to happen since we aren’t getting Gaborik and Jagr would never take 6 million, not to mention a few other things, but I tried. haha.

  88. blueshirt bulletin is talking about rumors of big money offer for Jagr to go to Russia

  89. Ham Hands Bill on

agreed salty…no need for Rolston on this team. How about giving guys like Dawes, Prucha, & Callahan a real shot at stepping up.

  90. I can’t believe people are listing him on their want lists! I thought the guy was 33 and still considered that *way* too old for our movement. Nothing against Ralston, but No Thanks.

  91. Tony from AZ on

Dubi at Blueshirt Bulletin is saying that Russia offered Jagr 20 million.
    Hope he likes Vodka !

  92. “And Vally could only be a #1 in TB or LA, both have young goalies that are soon to come up to start though”

Tampa traded for Mike Smith, who is much better than Valliquette. LA can sign Kolzig, Theodore, Emery, or any other starting goaltender that will be looking for work: all of whom are better than Valliquette.

Noonan, Valliquette isn’t the best backup in the league. Osgood is clearly the best backup. Even if he is the starter, then Hasek is the best backup. Other backups who are better: Conklin, Hedberg, Mason (Ellis wrestled the starting job from Mason, who is still a good goaltender), Budaj, Nittymaki, Thomas, and Lalime. And don’t forget the guys who were backups at the start of the season, like Bryzgalov and Smith.

  93. The biggest thing about that 12 million is that it’s tax free. That is like 20 million here.

  94. “Tampa traded for Mike Smith, who is much better than Valliquette. LA can sign Kolzig, Theodore, Emery, or any other starting goaltender that will be looking for work: all of whom are better than Valliquette.

I knew that but they were still saying that the job was up for anyone. Smith is a very good goalie though that wasn’t allowed to shine behind Turco. LA can get others and just have them split with Ersberg. Pretty much my point was the same as yours, just because we saw Vally do great, doesn’t mean A) he’s a #1 in the NHL or B) he is the best backup in the league. He’s a solid backup, but theres a reason he is 30 and has only played maybe 30 NHL games in his career.

  95. hey, at least if we finish last in the league we’ll have a good shot at tavares…

  96. Come on, folks. Vally turned out way better than I, for one, would have thought, but come on.

And, wow, that is a big money offer — um, rumor.

  97. Yesterday on Montreal radio they interviewed an official of a new league set to kick off this fall in Europe. Its called the “Continental Hockey league” This is what they had on Blue Shirt Bulletin (otherwise known as Blue Shirt Thought Police)

I caught last part of the interview; it sounds like it will be heavily Russian at least at first; $750,000 entrance fee; $25 Million salary cap (also a minimum which I didn’t take note of); $7 million “star cap” this is the total you can pay for 1 to 4 players (ie Jagr for $7 mil or 4 stars that add up to $7 mil)

  98. czechthemout!!!! on

This is actually a good thing if Jagr indeed takes the money from Dynamo Moskow. It will stop Sather from giving Jagr more than the 5million or so that he deserves. It will also allow Drury and Gomez to assume the main leadeship position on the team.It will also force the rangers to continue to develope the youth and also force them to sign some mid level forward to plug in with Gomez who can replace Jagr’s feeble regular season numbers.Bringing back most of the czech posse in my opinion would be a major step backwards and almost assure this team of missing the playoffs.

  99. “Bringing back most of the czech posse in my opinion would be a major step backwards and almost assure this team of missing the playoffs.”
    czechthemout!!!!

CTM I agree. Although I respect Jags alot, I think he really got off lightly with his comments about “conserving energy” for most of the year…nobody took him to task and asked “But you got paid fully this year shouldn’t you PLAY all year?” also….If you are “conserving yourself” shouldn’t you play less minutes per game? Why have someone out there playing at 60% for 20-25 minutes??

I am glad NYR had Jags to help them become a post season team again…”thank you’s” are in order but now I think they need a new direction….If Jags is a part of it then it must be different…he cannot be key man….I don’t think he’ll ever go for it though like Modano did in Dallas….

  100. One last thing about Jags and then I promise to let it go for a while….I think if you really want to be honest the difference between where the Rangers finished this year and where we all THOUGHT THEY’D FINISH after signing goofy Gomez and Drury is the sub-par year Jags had….we all thought they’d be in top 3 at least( and that included Ottawa who sunk like a brick)

Everyone preformed to their level of expectation Henrik, Renney, Shanahan, Avery, the kids and Gomer and Dru had “their average career type seasons….Only Jags ( and Straka both due to injury and Jags conservation of energy)seemed to slip

This led to another mad scramble to just make the playoffs…maybe the Pens beat them anyway but maybe if Rangers finished 1st or 2nd (and lets face it they were only; what? 6-7 points from there)it would have been in conference finals and not another QF round exit…maybe then we look at season as a step forward instead of status quo

    just rambling thoughts

  101. For those who figure that because Pittsburgh beat the Rangers, and now Detroit is handling the Pens with ease, that it would be twice as easy for the Wings to beat the Rangers, I say you are wrong. It is actually pretty illogical. Doesn’t work that way in sports. Maybe the Rangers would look way worse than Pittsburgh, or maybe they would look marginally better, or…whatever.

This figuring it out on paper thing, you can’t be serious.

  102. Can’t wait for another year of Jagr sometimes going hard, sometimes…”yawn…don’t feel like back-checking tonight…think I’ll stay out too long and dog it back to the bench…hey, it’s a long long season….got to …conserve…en…er….g…y……”

    Let him walk

  103. it’s a crock what Jagr does. this prima donna thing is disgusting and hurts the Rangers. Is there a blog where I can find out colour of socks he wore today? He is THAT important, apparently.
