Put away the passport

Posted by: Sam Weinman - Posted in Uncategorized on Apr 22, 2008

Pittsburgh it is, thanks to the Flyers win in OT moments ago.

If the Rangers are going to Montreal, it wouldn’t be until the Eastern Conference finals.

Game 1 in Pittsburgh is scheduled for Friday, with Game 2 to be played Sunday afternoon on NBC. I don’t have a full schedule yet, but I would imagine Games 3 and 4 at the Garden would be Tuesday and Thursday. But I’ll confirm when I have it.

Whether this is the match-up you wanted or not, you have to admit: Rangers-Pens is going to be a blast.

More from the practice rink tomorrow…

    hmmmm… here we go!

  3. davidc

bring on Pit and the Cry Baby Crosby’s…

    4-1, 12 to go, LGR!!!

  4. Agravaine

    LIQUID,

we will see but Jo and I will probably go to the Garden for both games, even if we are watching the game at Molly Wee’s aorund the cornere (or for JO she might be getting text messages form me if they play on Thurs since she will be in class) but we try to get autographs and wish the players luck (I know, its silly but in the first round the only game they lost was the one we dind’t see them before hand… hipefully that means nothing since we can’t get to Pitts…)

anyway so we will try to be there. If you don’t have your camera I will bring mine, we are going to try to win tickets by riding the playoff buses anyway, if we won I would need my camera, means I will bring my zoom lens to, so you could check that out.. its great for sports… when you are far away (like I often am)

  5. Timay!

Thanks to none other than Tom Poti’s penalty in OT-worthless Piece of sheit. Mr. Crosby, get ready to smell Avery’s smelly glove.

  6. Doodie Machetto

They should get Strudwick in for one game, and give him one, and only one assignment: Break Crosby’s leg. If he goes through with it, he gets resigned.

    I think it’s worth it.

  7. Agravaine

watching San Jose and Calgary… don’t know who I care to see win… I guess San Jose, go for the American team..

  8. GoCaptClutch!

“They should get Strudwick in for one game, and give him one, and only one assignment: Break Crosby’s leg. If he goes through with it, he gets resigned.

    haha without a doubt!

I’m psyched it’s the pens. it’ll be a great series. check out the pens message board—their fans are terrified to be playing ny!

  9. TrueBlue

    Puck the Fenguins

  10. Agravaine

they’re afraid to play us?!? well thats some comfort, I hope Jagr reacts against the Pens fans even better then GOmez did with the Devs fans…

  11. Brandon

Bring on Cindy! Highly confident and by no means disillusioned. Rangers in 6 or less.

  12. Jorek

I hope they don’t play on a Thursday! I don’t think I can sit in class with a playoff game taking place 30 blocks away!

  13. Jorek

Rangers in 6- I like that!

  14. LI Joe

in west got to root for Calgary since they and Colorado have less pts than us.

  15. Brandon

I’m pretty sure the first two games are Fri-Sun, which makes sense b/c NBC and Crosby have a more than plutonic relationship

  16. Jeff L.

    Rangers in 6.

The Penguins have NO idea what’s coming their way.

  17. Sissy Crosby

Great, now we have to deal with refs and the penguins. As we all know Sissy Crosby gets all the calls and can cross check anyone he wants to at any time….

  18. mhurley

I love it. The Rangers will hammer Mary Crosby.

I bet Bettman is pissed he didn’t get his Ovechkin/Crosby matchup, thanks to Tom Poti. Poti for hooking. Big Surprise.

  19. Jorek

This year we were 5-3-0. Four of our wins came at the garden and have won five in a row going back to last year (march 19th)

  20. TrueBlue

Easy on these predictions, despite NYC being the media capital of the world and a large fan-base the NHL has chosen Crosby as its savior, meaning that refereeing will not be friendly to the Rangers. Adding in Avery’s less than admirable status with the league, we could see some interesting stuff. Also, something to watch out for is Jarkko Ruutu vs. Jagr. If I’m remembering my Ruutus correctly, he has run Jagr several times (including the Olympics). I’m pretty sure Colton Orr will be necessary this series (if healthy). Also, for those of age- it could be a great drinking game to take a shot of your favorite adult beverage every time a commentator on NBC mentions something overly flattering regarding how “great” Crosby is or how young players should emulate him…

  21. Hockeyman Rangers #2

SHUT UM DOWN BOYS!!!! WE KNOW YOU CAN DO IT, COOL THOSE HOT LITTLE BOYS DOWN. I GUESS YOU CAN CALL THEM HOT EVEN THOUGH THE SENS GAVE THEM THE SERIES.

ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS PLAY OUR GAME AND CONTINUE TO PLAY AS WELL AS WE HAVE BEEN, AND WE WILL BE SEEING MONTREAL NEXT. OOOPS GETTING AHEAD OF MYSELF. I KNOW I KNOW ONE SERIES AT A TIME.

    GO RANGERS.

  22. baby Cindy Crosby

Gee guys its an honor to play against an original six team, but you know since I am the greatest thing in hockey I, did I say I? I meant my team, the Penguins, will win, because Gary told me so. And Reebok wants to keep running all its commercials with me so I have to win I just have to. It’s not fair if I don’t. Gary you promised!

  23. JK1994

The Penguins had it tooo easy and toooo much rest in the first round. It reminds me of us and Atlanta last year. They have not had any test and no idea of what they are in for!!!

  24. Agravaine

I might just try that drinking game… o I will as long as I am not at a bar, it might get awfully expensive then…

  25. Who Needs Lohan

All right lady and gentlemen, to Pittsburgh we go! I actually think they will go Wed/Fri at the Garden and not Tues Thursday. Just makes more sense to me. Anyone confirm the schedule yet?

  26. Agravaine

Yes this is the Ruutu that hurt Jagr… the younger Ruutu is on Carolina, but I’m not sure if they are related or simply both Finnish.. I rmemeber hearing they are brothers, but they have differnet home towns listed on nhl.com

  27. LIQUID

I mentioned it before on this blog…Looking back during the regular season, one of the top three best games the Rangers played was against the Penguins….It was on Dec 18,2007 and the Blueshirts blanked them 4-0 @ MSG.

Interesting enough is the fact that the HBO line played their hearts out against the Penguins 1st line with Crosby and Co.

Furthermore, even Struds had a very solid game taking the body and being really physical in the Rangers zone…

It will be interesting to see who is on the 4th line….Will we see a reunited HBO? What would happen to Shoey? We shall see soon enough.

  33. Who Needs Lohan

No one is winning this in 5, this will be a battle. NYR in 7. Drury gets the GWG

  34. Who Needs Lohan

You can get Game 5 tix on Stubhub for 200 a pop in decent seats. I assume Game 5 will be next Sunday. Thinking of pullin the trigger!

  35. Jorek

Lets Go Rangers! We can do it!

  36. Jorek

Grrr I wish I could go to a game.

  37. joejoe315

im going again with rangers in 6

  38. Jorek

It won’t be less than six thats for sure.

  39. MikeA

I’m not worried about Ruutu; Callahan took care of him last time they played in NY. This is going to be a TOUGH series and I’ve been a Rangers fan since 1988 and the one team the Rangers never play well is Pitt esepcially in the Ilgoo; however; Peter Graves should follow around Blair Betts and give him one of those 30 second self destruction tapes with a profile on Crosby, and in the Worlds a few years ago, Staal shut down Malkin. They can do it! Let’s Go Rangers!

  40. Tim

Any other Rangers fans living in the ‘Burgh??? If you know of such a person or you fit this description, please contact me! I’m trying to generate a critical mass so we can crash a sports bar and turn it into MSG West. Email gtimothy@gmail.com

  41. Bathgate

How relieved are the Habs that they have the Flyers and not the NYR coming up?

I believe it will be a long series. I think the Rangers win in 7, with Hank ultimately outplaying Fleury as the difference. Though we fans will suffer enormously—- due to the officials, the giveaways in our own end, and the inability to slow the Penguins in the neutral zone.

But in the end, all will be well…..

  42. Jorek

I say go with a fourth line of Sjostrum- Betts – Orr

Orr will give the phsyical presence we need. Betts does a good job forechecking and Sjo will give a little bit of a scoring threat.

  43. Jorek

Avery is gonna have to bug the hell out of the Penguins- we know he bothers Hossa and Jagr is gonna have to play the strong game he has been playing recently.
Henrik has been great and yeah I think he can put play Fleury.

  44. Rucchin

If they meet the Flyers in Round 3, does Renney put in Valiquette?

    http://www.nyhockeyrivalry.blogspot.com

  45. Ante

Definitely think it’ll be Tues/Thurs at MSG. Jay-Z concert next Friday night.

  46. Bathgate

Jagr’s play must not be inhibited by the booing, as it has been in recent visits to the Igloo.

Up the Prozac prescription, JJ, if that’s what it takes for you to be free and confident and positive. Pittsburgh can be beaten, but Jaromir must be a factor.

  47. DB Cooper

My best friend is a pens fan…I just called him to tell him I would talk to him in 2 weeks cause we can’t be friends right now.

    Let’s do this…I’m pretty excited

  48. LI Joe

Rucchin -why do you have to show the link to your blog every time you post. we all have enough to read.

anyway Let’s Go Rangers lets beat the pens dry

  49. GoaliePG

I’m a Rangers fan in Pennsylvania, north of Pittsburgh, but definitely Penguin territory. Some of my friends are penguin fans. I was kind of hoping if the Rangers faced the penguins it would be in the conference finals, but I don’t really care. At least I should get to see some of the games.

  50. Spiderpig

Salty – I forgot to mention earlier that the Flames’ “A” still exists as their Alternate Captain letter. :) It is sick.

    Croskin’s going down…on Fleury!!

  51. Doodie Machetto

Jeremy Roenick, you wiley old bastard!

  52. Peter

    Brandon –

I think you mean platonic. No need to drag the whole solar system into this. But I see your point and agree.

  53. Peter

Rucchin -why do you have to show the link to your blog every time you post. we all have enough to read.

Never mind that, I like the link and enjoy the blog, but what gives with the name, dude? A 3rd-line-center-turned second-line-center-on-a-one-line-team-that-got back-to-the-playoffs-and-got-their-butts-beat? Why not call yourself Gomer or Drury23? Hell, if you wanna wax nostalgic for a center who wasn’t great in the talent department but had loads of heart, how about Kisio11?

  54. LEETCH2

RANGERS IN 6 SOUNDS JUST RIGHT

  55. Beer Me!

    “Puck the Fenguins” LOVE that.

Doodie – Struds also had that OT winner in Pitt early on in the year.

Sux that the Flames lost. Oh well.

Poti Sux. Incase someone wasn’t sure.

We desperately need to stay out of the box vs Pitt. Their PP has one them many a game.

I haven’t done the research. But I was advised that the Rangers have never beaten the Pens in a playoff round. In fact, we’ve haven’t even beat them a total of 4 times. So if anyone wants to throw around #’s for this one…include that one. These are 2 completely different teams, and it’s gonna be one hell of a series. Is it Friday yet?

  56. Peter

    Beer Me –

That would be correct. The teams have met 3 times, in 1989 (Pens 4-1), 1992 (Pens 4-2) and 1996 (Pens 4-0). Suffice to say that as Jagr and Straka are the only ones around from those days and they’re now on the other team, it probably doesn’t mean a whole lot. But if it can be turned into bulletin board fodder as in “It’s time the Rangers beat the Penguins in the playoffs”, I’m all over it.

  57. cmumarc

Can someone please tell me one aspect of the game where the Rags outmatch the Pens? Yeah, “Puck the Fenguins” and “It’s time that the Rags beat the Penguins in the playoffs” sound nice, but when you look at the teams, do you seriously think you can win? Anyone?
