The Caps win and pull into a tie with Carolina with 90 points.

More importantly, the Rangers will most likely have to wait until Thursday against the Islanders for a chance to clinch a playoff spot.

This is the way it should be, in my book.

Until tomorrow….

  1. Win one game of three and they’re in. Win three out of three (and honestly, the way both the Devils and Isles and Ottawa look, there’s not much excuse for not winning all three. Hell, Drew Fata is taking a regular shift in front of Wade Dubkliewicz and Joey MacDonald right now. And the Devild barely beat them), and they’ve got home ice in round one.

I agree, I like the Rangers having something to play for here.

  2. If im looking at this right they can clinch tomorrow if Carolina loses also. The clinch if either Washington or Carolina lose on regulation or of course a win

  3. Rob, good call on Carolina tomorrow if they lose…I am a PHD in mathematics @ MIT and couldnt figure that out….hehe

  4. Ottowa may not make the playoffs…..

they are a disaster, they should give the backup goalie 1 last chance..

can’t watch a Devil fishy game, so damn boring..

  5. Devils tix on sale at 9am.
Let’s get many and make sure Rangers are well supported in away games in playoffs!

  6. Problem is, if the Rangers match up with someone else you’ll be stuck with a whole slew of tickets that you can’t get rid of.

  7. stuart – I’ve been thinking for a while now that Emery should get another go at it. But at this point, he should realize that Murray is never giving him a chance. I really believe in this case, that this is not about Ray Emery the hockey player, rather Ray Emery the poor excuse for a teammate. Paddock lost his job b/c he let Emery decide on his own rules. It may be my imagination, but it looks like Murray is saying to Paddock…”this is how you woulda saved your job”.

  8. I saw Laviolette’s(sp) tantrum last night. I just turned it on as he was freakin out(never saw the call). I thought he was going to blow a F’n gasket.

I don’t know. I understand when a bad call is made you should put some pressure on the officials. Make sure they know, that you know, they’re screwing you. But wasn’t it 2-1 or 3-1 washington at that point? Focussing that energy into getting your team back in it seems more important to me. Abusing the officals will NOT make them change a call. Never has. At the end of the day, you can only hope it gets evens out. One day the league will get it right and either institue more replays, fine/suspend officials for bad calls, converse with the officiating crew like the NFL, or let linesmen call blatent penalties.

Lord knows in my playing/coaching days I had my fair share of run-ins with officals. Made threats, accidently sent a dump-in directly at a ref (oops). But that was when I was 17/18 and had all that angst. As a professional, you shouldn’t be acting like that. Especially if you want to grow your sport.

Still wondering if Vally is a possibility for tomorrow night.

Should I buy Devils tickets? Someone who is good with numbers should come up with the statistical probability that the Rangers will play them.

At the same time, part of me is thinking, no matter who the Devils get matched up with, it’ll be fun to watch them beat the Devils… I think the more relevant inquiry for me now is whather I know any Devils fans who would take the tickets off of my hands.

  11. Doodie,

At this point it would be about a 80% chance the Rangers open against NJ. I say this for a few reasons:

    1) The Rangers are still fighting for a spot and they should overwhelm the Islanders in the next 2 games. I only see the Isles putting up a fight on the Island, when it comes to the Garden, they may just pack it in.

    2) Ottawa doesn’t look like it has the horses to finish the regular season, let alone pass the Rangers in the standings now. The Rangers still have a game at hand and Ottawa closes the season against Toronto and Boston, both teams have owned the Senators lately, especially Toronto who has out scored them 9-4 in their last 2 games including a 5-0 shutout.

    3) It would be a great boost for the Rangers to finish and play NJ in the first round. We owe them.

Vally won’t play as long as there is a chance for home ice.

I wasn’t asked, but my opinion is that Murray is the next guy to get fired if they don’t make the playoffs, or if they have a quick exit from the playoffs. Emery should have been suspended from the team.

So, I was looking at the schedules of the other teams, and I’ve decided that Boston is the only team that could potentially dislodge us from 5th. They play the Devs, Sens, and Sabres in their last three.

Oh man, I could totally buy the Devils tickets…. Damn it!

  13. salty – That’s what I was thinking when I read your 1st post! haha

I could go into more details, but I think that my take on it is summed up with that. When Emery was hurt at the beginning of the year they were on fire. One could make a case that other injuries and plain old coincidence could have contributed to their downfall, which is not out of the question. And every city picks their scapegoat/whipping boy. Ott is no different, ya know?

Plus I think he’s a scumbag anyway. I don’t think that Paddock was doing that great of a job, but Emery openly admitted that he felt guilty in Paddocks firing.

I would love to see them miss the playoffs.

  14. VERY tempting to buy those tix right now.

I don’t think that Melnyk will fire his GM/coach. I don’t really have anything to back it up, it’s just a gut-feeling.

  15. Doodie the problem is if you buy Devil PO tix and they play someone else you’d probably have a tough time selling them…HaHa

  16. Billy,
the Fishsticks never pack it in against the Rangers…Don’t forget this is there opportunity to make a mark before they hit the golf courses…

  17. I wouldn’t wish to meet the Devils in the playoffs, especially right away. Brodeur is a playoff goaltender and the Devils will tighten up defensively even more so. Since the Rangers are having trouble scoring that isn’t the way they want to open a Cup run.

  18. Doodie Machetto on

I’m going for it. I found some upper level seats in the middle, and I’ve kinda wanted to see their arena anyway.

Besides, it’s the playoffs, and whatever team they play will play a more entertaining style of play than the Rangers or Devils anyway!

  19. Doodie Machetto on

oh should I just get insurance? 6 bucks a ticket, and then I can get my money back?

  20. Beer FWIW I was interested mostly on your take with how to handle “stubborn talent”… I’m not up to date on the soap opera in OTT but it was my impression that Emery is generally a shtdck of a teammate, however, a potentially very good goalie when stroked the right way. I might see *similarities* between this situation and what we’ve seen with a certain player here. Just stirring conversation, not trying to “start” or “bash” or anything like that… for every similarity, I see twice as many differences…

At what point do you sacrifice “team” for “individual talent”….. not that that’s neccessarily the case in OTT or NYR… just an interesting question.

  21. Doodie Machetto on

I did it. I bought the Devils tickets, no insurance. I figure if worse comes to worst, I can always just go to the game. I hear the arena is pretty nice.

  22. I wouldn’t wish to meet the Devils in the playoffs, especially right away. Brodeur is a playoff goaltender and the Devils will tighten up defensively even more so. Since the Rangers are having trouble scoring that isn’t the way they want to open a Cup run.

    Couldn’t disagree more.

You take the Devil’s out early (which we obviously “can”), suddenly anything seems possible.

Not to mention there is absolutely nothing like a RANGERS/DEVILS playoffs. We owe them. So badly.
Rangers in 6. Nigel Dawes. Got that Black Magic.

  23. “I might see similarities between this situation and what we’ve seen with a certain player here.”

Salty, are you referring to Avery?
    Cause I don’t think he’s a “shtdck” of a teammate…though I guess he could be…
And I’m not sure who you are refering to…

  24. I wouldn’t wish to meet the Devils in the playoffs, especially right away. Brodeur is a playoff goaltender and the Devils will tighten up defensively even more so. Since the Rangers are having trouble scoring that isn’t the way they want to open a Cup run.

Rmant…the Devils can’t score either, you think we have problems…they couldn’t hit an empty net…
And I think just like last season they are burning out Brodeur by playing him so much…he sucked last season in the playoffs and I expect the same this season…

  25. No, I wasn’t refering to Avery although that’s another very good example. I don’t consider Avery to hold the level of “talent” I was kind of talking about. But more importantly, I don’t think anyone on the Rangers is a real “shtdck” teammate at all. I do think that “real team play” has sometimes been sabotaged in efforts to revolve around someone though….

Just very vague similarities, no parallels by anymeans. Does it need to be spelled out? lol
