Superstition or system?

Tom Renney has again opted against tinkering with his lineup, other than Marek Malik missing his second consecutive game with what is now a slight shoulder sprain.

This also means Henrik Lundqvist is back in net, which makes sense: Florida has won five straight, so the Rangers are better off having their No. 1 guy tonight.

All this “courtesy of my fantasy league co-owner Zipay”:http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/hockey/rangers/blog/ (under whose stewardship we are losing ground in the standings. And to Dellapina, no less!). Sadly I am not in Florida, which would be even more painful if not for the first signs of spring appearing here. Instead, it will be Sam and Joe on the TV and my 2 1/2 year-old bouncing on the couch wondering why the Rangers are wearing white (he refers to them as the “Blue Rangers,” so this is all very confusing).

In other news, my colleague Rick Carpiniello chimes in with a “buzzkill observation here”:http://carp.lohudblogs.com/.

haha – newman. As I was reading that, I was like ‘I guess this is where I come in’. lol

I’ll be glad to help, but it’s really no use. I can’t try to change their minds anymore. If people don’t want to enjoy this team, they don’t have to. The people who doubt their team and bitch to other Ranger fans about this guy sux, that guy sux, are the same one’s who turn around and bash the other local teams to their fans.

It’s easier for them to say “I told you so” when their team doesn’t win a championship b/c the odds are in their favor to be correct. I DO think that positive fans are better fans. There’s nothing physical to prove that. It’s an emotional connection to something that you love. Win or lose, I love the Rangers.

Pavel – good thing it’s not pre-2004 anymore huh? It’s 2008 and we’re a few points out of the conference lead.

We’ve earned the most points over any 13 game stretch that any other team in the NHL has this year. This team does not suck. To the contrary, we’re playing our best hockey at THE most important time of the regular season.

The playoffs are anyone’s. Detroit is going to hobble in with injuries to some of their top players. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them exit in round 1 … again. Haven’t we learned anything from seeing them win the Pres trophy year after year? I actually think it’ll be Ana or CGY in the finals from the west. (I picked cgy at the start of the season, so I have to stick with it).

The East is ABSOLUTELY any (of the top 6)team’s for the taking right now. Regular season and playoffs.

Salty: 17-5-4 is not a ‘streak’. It’s 1/3 of the F’n season dude. 38 out of 52 possible points.

  2. From the previous post…
Newman and Beer me, I don’t want to be lumped in with all the negative haters…
For the most part this season I have stayed very postive.
I was pretty bummed right when we had that last 5 day break, where I felt I also needed a break but I think this team can do very well in the post season…
    Hank is playing well…
For the most part this team plays team defense very well…
We seem to have 3 very balanced lines that all pose a threat… and a 4th line that with the addition of Sjostrom has really come together.
I honestly don’t care who we play in the post season…when this team is playing the system as a whole we can beat anyone.

    REPOST:

“Doodie you said you would not want to play Boston right now. They are like 4-4-2 and in their last 10 and we beat them while playing bad hockey. They lost 6 of their last 7 (2 in OT but still) and would have lost 7 of 7 if Donald Brashear wasn’t a dumbass.”

True, but we always seem to play like absolute “Sugar Honey Iced Tea” against them. That’s my only motivation in wanting to avoid them.

As for Ottawa, they slumped for a while, but on any given night are the most dangerous team in the East. Their biggest weakness remains in between the pipes, but I think that’s why they would match well against us, since the Rangers have a habit of making B level goaltenders look like Vezina winners.

You mention Carolina, and while I would agree because they’ve been good, I think that they are too weak defensively to compete effectively in the playoffs. I also think that even our lame PP would be able to destroy their even lamer PK.

I’m not quite as negative as Salty here. I think the Rangers stand a very real chance of making the finals, but I also accept that they will have a tough series against a few teams.

But I really think that if any of the Pacific Division teams come out of the west (as one should), the cup is theirs for the taking.

  4. REPOST:

Newman – You truly have a selective memory. I had valid reasons for Prucha playing.

    1. Shanahan has 7 goals in his last 20 games.
    2. Straka has 2.
    3. They are both 35+ years old and have played PP, PK and ES minutes, which takes a toll.
    4. If there’s an injury, do you want a player inserted into a playoff lineup that hasn’t seen any game action for 1+ months? I don’t.

You riff and rant and whine about other people’s realistic arguments and insert your own wild innuendo as if we should all bow to your fountain of knowledge.

You can be a blind faith fan if you want, it doesn’t mean you have to knock those who have worries about the team based on fact. WANTING the team to win is one thing…Believing they CAN win is something entirely different. If you watch games and think this team, playing as it is now, can make a DEEP playoff run, then you don’t really know anything about the sport.

  5. So no Prucha still huh?

Sorry prucha27. Better get some Kleenex.

The lack of changes to the lineup tells me that this team is really going full-speed ahead at trying to get home-ice advantage. I like it. When was the last time we even had the chance to even consider it!?

  6. Beer Me: Clown, clown, clown, clown, clown. Another internet tough guy with no real points behind his spouting.

  7. In all fairness, we are not the hottest team in the league. In the east, yes. But SJ is 10-0 in their last ten. That’s nasty.

hey, where the hell is nasty? I guess he’s working on his best Billy Madison bender.

  8. Adam and his Apple on

    hatin all this negative energy

were all rangers fans and the funny thing is if we were all in the same room wed be like brothers

this is the most important time of the year and while the hockey rodent and inferno think that while we may be winning games, we are not playing our best hockey

now while they might be right i think it was just a case of us being worn down a bit, we needed this 3 day rest and youll see were gonna sweep the florida teams this weekend

renney knows how to get us focused

  9. Beer Me, I know it’s 2008, but I’m just saying I’m used to disappointment. To be honest, I’ve been biatching about special teams since game 1!

  10. How anyone would say we’re “hot” when we’re barely scoring, and winning in shootouts, is beyond me.

  11. Prucha27,
the only valid point is to bring Prucha in to rest Shanny or Straka. However the fact that Straka only has 2 goals in 20 games means nothing…Prucha has 7 in 56 games. Straka has 12 in 53 games, not that much better but Straka is a more round complete player who does not get his bell rung on a daily basis.

  12. If you watch games and think this team, playing as it is now, can make a DEEP playoff run, then you don’t really know anything about the sport.

    ….

Ehhhh I wouldn’t go that far…. I just think that it you think the comptetition in the playoffs is going to be similar to what we’ve been up against lately…you’re blind.

And the Rangers will not be able to adjust quick enough to keep up with the pack. I’ll put it this way, this team does not look like they are after a Stanley Cup. MOre importantly, Jagr seems to have forgotten all about it.

  13. Beer Me! (THE Internet Tough Guy) on

prucha27 – up until the boston game on sunday, we had scored 3+ goals in 10 straight games. Are we really “barely scoring”??

    pavel – fair enough.

  14. “I just think that if you think the comptetition in the playoffs is going to be similar to what we’ve been up against lately…you’re blind.”

I think that’s very true. I don’t think that’s being overlooked though. Maybe by a few, but not the majority.

  15. Doodie Machetto on

“1. Shanahan has 7 goals in his last 20 games.”

Uhh, that’s pretty good. If he had that pace all season, he’d lead our team in goals.

You’re onto something with Straka, but the team is winning without Prucha or Hollweg in the lineup. I say leave it until they lose in regulation. Then swap Prucha and Straka.

  16. “jagr has already won two cups but I think he wants to see guys like straka and some others finally win one.

    …….

what kind of disney cartoon do you think this is? are you xxcking kidding?”

I never said anything about them winning. I just said he wants to see those guys win. He stated that last year and thats why he was so disappointed. Everyone knows Straka is one of his good friends and he’d love to see him in a cup.

  17. Sam I think Carp is an ass!

What I don’t miss is when he would do his NHL awards and he would write Lady Byng = Who Cares?

Can someone explain our system to me at least what it is supposed to be?

  18. Beer – You’re only as good as what you’ve done in the last week. We have scored 3 goals in our last 2 games, against teams with weakened defenses. That just isn’t good enough.

Doodie – How can anyone keep referencing anything with the sentence “would lead our team in goals”? We haven’t been scoring all year. Leading our team in goals is no major feat.

  19. Prucha – the team has been a tired group with this really strange schedule. A lot of games lumped together, followed by breaks, followed by more lumped together games. Somehow, with 12 games remaining, the Rangers still have 4 sets of back-to-back games left! That’s absurd. It doesn’t allow you to get in normal hockey rhythm, even if it does provide valuable rest.

Anyway, generally, I’m an extremely positive fan. I try to see the good side of everything. Am I critical? Absolutely. Everyone here deserves some right to be critical, especially because we invest valuable time (and those of us who have bought tickets, MONEY) in this hockey team. But honestly, the constant bashing of Renney, Jagr, Avery, Lundqvist et. al. is just unbearable to read. These guys have all contributed in some way to not only turning this season around, but the entire FRANCHISE around. Do you remember how AWFUL things were just a few short years ago? Remember Anson Carter? Remember Rich Pilon? Remember Andreas Johanssen? How god awful were those hockey teams???

Point is, this is a really likeable, skilled, hard-working hockey team. Yes, it has flaws. My main pet peeve is the Power Play, which must be fixed come playoff time. But every team has flaws. If they didn’t, they’d win every game 10-0 (which is what some people on message boards/blogs seem to expect…ludicrous). Anyway, this team is playing really well. I’m excited about the stretch drive and the playoffs.

  20. “You’re only as good as what you’ve done in the last week.
    1) says who?

“We have scored 3 goals in our last 2 games, against teams with weakened defenses. That just isn’t good enough.”
    2) and shut one of them out. Is that good enough?

  21. A long time ago I was at work and listening to Mike and the Mad Dog when a guy walked in and said “I hate these guys!” I asked him why and he said because they take the fun out of sports by their analysis. That nothing is ever good enough. Many years later, I now see his point.

  22. And…
“You can be a blind faith fan if you want, it doesn’t mean you have to knock those who have worries about the team based on fact. WANTING the team to win is one thing…Believing they CAN win is something entirely different. If you watch games and think this team, playing as it is now, can make a DEEP playoff run, then you don’t really know anything about the sport.”

First of all every team has worries, thats why we watch, because the NHL landscape changes every night. If there is a team with out any worries I’d stop watching because we all know the outcome…
As far a WANTING and BELIEVING, I don’t know what that statement means. If you are a fan of the NYR you obviously want them to win, but if you don’t believe they can win then why be a fan in the first place…
Which team in the east could make that DEEP run…is it the team without any worries?

  23. I’ll say it again, just because Straka isn’t scoring doesn’t mean hes not doing anything. Callahan and Drury are getting points and hes one of the reasons why. hes fighting hard in the tough spots and freeing up ice for the other two. Also hes still a threat to score if he gets a chance so he can’t be left completely open. Lastly, you don’t change the chemistry with that line since its working and they are playing well together. I think we would all like to see Prucha do well as a Ranger, but for now there isn’t room for him in the lineup since we’re rolling.

  24. “You’re only as good as what you’ve done in the last week.
    1) says who?
Says anyone who lives in the real world.

“We have scored 3 goals in our last 2 games, against teams with weakened defenses. That just isn’t good enough.”
    2) and shut one of them out. Is that good enough?
No, not when they are missing 3 top-6 defensemen and playing their backup goaie, no, it isn’t good enough.

  25. So in an hour there’s a raffle here at my office for 4 tix to tuesday nights game. Somewhere in the 200’s. $20 for 10 tickets. It’d be nice!

  26. Beer me, if you win you could take the 10 “positive” people from this blog…if there is 10

  27. “only as good as the last week”…

So then florida is the best team in the east? I don’t get it.

I wonder what world I live in. Do you guys have to do the whole 9-5 thing in yours?

  28. Great post by Staal Wart.

Listen, I have no problem with people criticizing based on fact. But the other thing is that if you tell me Jagr doesn’t care about winning, that’s an example of something that IS NOT based on fact and just one’s personal observation.

If you give me Lundqvist’s stats from December-February (which were rather ugly), I can’t argue that. but don’t use a 3 month stretch to say “he’s not a #1 goalie” and “isn’t worth the contract.” Look at the whole body of work, please. And don’t discount Swedish league championships and the Olympic Gold Medal either. They prove he’s a winner. I know Valiquette is a nice backup, but put down the crack pipe if you think he should play over Hank on a daily basis. THIS is an example of the type of thing that irks me to no end on this and other Ranger blogs.

    Root for your team, please.

And oh yeah, I’d like to see everyone here do Tom Renney’s job. Somehow I don’t think you’d be climbing the list of all-time winningest Rangers coaches as fast as he is. Just a hunch.

  29. Staal – The difference is I WANT to have a millions deposited in my bank account for no reason whatsoever. Do I BELIEVE it? No.

Every team has worries, yes, but some teams have more than others and I think we all know what teams they are, so why list them?

  30. staal – 4tix to game. 10 raffle tix for $20. sorry.

I would take salty & prucha27. And watch them tell everyone that has earned a paycheck from the Rangers or NHL that they are wrong. Sounds like fun, right?

  31. It’s just that people are soooo negative. I don’t get how anyone can find anything bad about the Rangers’ streak right now. What Carpinello has to find something to write about? But he always comes from a negative angle. Do something positive for once. But what Carpinello will then do is he’ll go to the other extreme and write about how Messier went and visited a children’s hospital, which is great. But it somes there is no middle ground with the guy.

  32. yeah, I could be a hater for one game though, I’ve read their posts enough to know what to say.

  33. Swedish league championships – Normally I may not consider them too impressive. But given the fact that it was the lockout season, the league was a bit tougher. So it IS an accomplishement.

“And oh yeah, I’d like to see everyone here do Tom Renney’s job. Somehow I don’t think you’d be climbing the list of all-time winningest Rangers coaches as fast as he is. Just a hunch.”

HELL YEAH BROTHA! You can come to the game RobC.

  34. Oh Beer me, I do the 10-7 thing…and leave a vapor trail on the way home to watch the games

  35. Doodie Machetto on

“Doodie – How can anyone keep referencing anything with the sentence “would lead our team in goals”? We haven’t been scoring all year. Leading our team in goals is no major feat.”

While it isn’t a major feat, you certainly wouldn’t sit your top goalscorerfor “lack of production.” Especially for a guy who has 7 in 56 compared to the 7 in 20.

And by the way, 7 in 20 is a 28 goal pace. He had 29 last season. Was anyone expecting that many more goals out of Shanny this season? I figured he was good for 25, tops, considering being a year older and his concussion last year.

I’m sorry, but I don’t think there is any way that you can justify sitting Shanny for Prucha. It doesn’t follow.

Again, when you bring up Straka, you have a stronger point. But There’s just no way Shanny sits for Prucha unless he is hurt.

  36. robC – watch. Now they’ll say “yeah, but other coaches didn’t have this guy or that guy”.

  37. Haha, thanks Beer Me.

I think the only reason I brought up the Elitserien Championship was because it proves he’s a winner. In sports, winners have intangible qualities. Now, I’ll probably get flamed for this cause there are no stats to back it up, but I believe in stuff like this. A guy like Drury…he’s just a winner (at several leves in multiple sports, mind you). Teams he is a part of just seem to win. Same goes for, as much as I hate it, the core Devils guys like Brodeur, Madden, etc. Derek Jeter, a winner.

Want a counterexample? Stephon Marbury…everywhere he goes, his teams lose. These aren’t just coincidences to me.

Anyway, Hank has proven he’s a winning goaltender. Nothing bothers me more on a Rangers blog than Hank bashing. Seriously, it needs to stop.

  38. Doodie,
I also don’t think there is any way Straka sits for Prucha.
Whether Straka is scoring or not he is a valuable asset, but I do wish Renney would take him off the PP, or at least off the point.

  39. Haha, yeah, I know. But it makes no sense. Renney, post-lockout, has done nothing short of fabulous work with 3 rosters that had varying degrees of talent. I thought other than Jagr, the 05-06 team was decidedly average. Renney got SO MUCH out of those guys. Now, two years in a row, he’s managed to turn his teams from mid-season mediocrity to late-season contenders. He should be commended in perpetuity.

  40. I just don’t know what people want exactly?

The New York media and SOME of their fans for that matter always seem to say that the Rangers are underachievers. But maybe the Rangers are constantly over hyped. It seems like that every year Messier would say that he believed the Rangers could win the Cup and then they wouldn’t make the playoffs.

He definitely used to overestimate the Rangers and maybe the team carried that arrogance onto the ice and that’s why they came out flat so much. I like this team and I’m really happy right now because a: I know that soon it will be summer and there won’t be any Rangers so I am appreciating it right now and B: I’m just glad they are in the playoffs with a realistic shot of making some noise.

1997-2004 were some very dark years with a lot of false promises.

I gotta be honest also and just say that I think that Carpinello is a miserable bastard.

  41. Doodie Machetto on

    “Doodie,
I also don’t think there is any way Straka sits for Prucha.
Whether Straka is scoring or not he is a valuable asset, but I do wish Renney would take him off the PP, or at least off the point.”

I agree with you, I was just saying the case for Prucha is a lot stronger when talking Straka. Which it is. But it doesn’t mean they should switch.

  42. RobC,
    We’ve already gone over this.
Drury, with his great defensive play, great PK abilities, good shot, 22 goals and 26 assists, great team player, Mr. Clutch with 6 GW goals and a phemoninal post season play and oh fighting skills…just sucks!

  43. Prucha27….42 goals in the last 11 games…..3.8 goals per game. Yeah, that offense sucks. Ottawa has the most goals this season and average only about 3.19 per game. Try harder with your bashing.

And it annoys me that you said, “You riff and rant and whine about other people’s realistic arguments and insert your own wild innuendo as if we should all bow to your fountain of knowledge.”

“….we should all bow to your fountain of knowledge!!!”

“….we should all bow to your fountain of knowledge!!!”

You had to repost so that it was there 2x? Jeez….

First of all, my fountain ain’t that deep and ain’t filled with that much knowledge. Please.

Second, the only thing I want is the haters to chill out and look at the facts, not shoot from the hip and not think it through.

Third, I can’t believe you are still pushing for Prucha. Tell me the truth, are you really Prucha himself?

Fourth, I resent your comment about being a blind faith fan. I call it like I see it. I have been going to games longer than you have been alive (I am guessing but I’d bet you were not alive in 1975.) So I have battled with this team through thick and thin. I have seen A LOT. Don’t give me this blind faith BS.

When they stink, I say they stink. Equally when they are playing good hockey and getting the job done, I give them props. They are playing good hockey at the right time of the year.

We should enjoy it while it is happening. My aim was to get everyone to stop, smell the roses, and say, “Hey, this team has a chance.”

Is that such a bad thing?

  44. No one ever said MSG had good ice. But to compare it to a one-time use outdoor rink (I’m judging by the game in buffalo this year) is retarded. If you watched the game, you know it had awful gameplay. Complete novelty act, geared for people that normally don’t care about the sport. But the reality is its still new enough to still be kinda cool.

    rangers @ yankee stadium…. unreal.

    ———————————–

One thing about the ice condition in buffalo…I read somewhere (probably here) that they only had a few days to set up the ice in Buffalo because of a Bills game, but for Yankee stadium they would have as much time as needed to create the ice. That extra time would would allow them to get it right…

  45. Amen New Newman. Good thing is most people are on board with you. The Garden has been in good spirits lately and will only get louder and more imposing as the weather warms. Can’t wait!

  46. Newman as I read thru your post I actually choked and spit up water all over my freaking keyboard as I read these words…

“Third, I can’t believe you are still pushing for Prucha. Tell me the truth, are you really Prucha himself?”

    ROFLMAO!!!

  47. Shanny has personally given the Rangers about 5 extra pts in shootouts alone. they would be on the playoff bubble ledge if not for that

  48. Jonas – I’m afraid you were mis-informed on the ’08 winter classic.

The bills played their last home game the 1st week of december. Obviously the game was a month later. I am actually well-informed when it comes to that event. Really, b/c I was was going(went) and wanted to know exactly what I would see.

They had plenty of time to set up, but with the lake effect snow, they couldn’t get too far ahead of themselves, and face digging themselves out every day.

  49. Staal – Relax, it wasn’t that funny. I know there cliques of people who blow each other, but calm down.

I can’t believe how many people on this blog put words n other people’s mouths.

I won’t even bother correcting all the bullshit you morons incorrectly quoted.

It’s just a shame that you’re all bandwagon fans. I can’t wait until Dawes goes a few games without scoring, then we’ll see you all saying that he sucks, too.

And for the idiots comparing Shanny’s production with Prucha…You’re a moron if you want to compare a guy who plays on the 2nd line, 1st PP unit and gets 20 minutes a night with a 3rd liner who rarely gets PP time. Brilliant. Well played.

  50. Doodie Machetto on

“And for the idiots comparing Shanny’s production with Prucha…You’re a moron if you want to compare a guy who plays on the 2nd line, 1st PP unit and gets 20 minutes a night with a 3rd liner who rarely gets PP time. Brilliant. Well played.”

DUDE! you’re the one saying they should be swapped!

  51. Doodie Machetto on

It’s not like I dislike Prucha or I’m in love with Shanny. I was one of the people saying Shanny shouldn’t have been resigned so that Prucha could fill his spot. But Prucha hasn’t played well this season, and right now there isn’t a spot in the lineup for him. He’ll get his chance next year or if someone gets injured.

But for getting him in right now? Forget it, there’s no way.

  52. It was funny but after you last post…even funnier…I agree it is Prucha

Hey Prucha, if you were producing you’d be moved up to the 2nd line and maybe the first PP unit
    Bandwagon fans…?
Last time I checked, the only NHL team I’ve liked is the Rangers.
Your just jealous of Dawes…aren’t you
Don’t be a distraction please…the team is on a roll

  53. Yo, Prucha, chillax.

I’m a HUGGGEEEEE Prucha fan. I think he’s gonna make it back into the lineup sooner rather than later, honestly. I really think he would be a big help on the Power Play, which needs to begin improving.

however, it’s really hard at the current moment, with the team on a run that comes along once per decade (even counting extra points via OTLs) to justify pulling Shanahan, Straka, Dawes, Callahan or anyone else out of the lineup for Prucha.

Again, I love the guy. I love his effort and his heart. I think he’s been snakebitten in terms of goal scoring this year…he could probably have 12 or 13 if not for some near misses, great saves and goalposts. Still, even though I’m a huge fan and want to see him succeed, he can’t be put in the lineup tonight. You me see him as soon as tomorrow, though.

  54. Adam and his Apple on

i think some people on this blog would only be happy if everybody on their roster had 50 goals and henrik had a shutout in every game XD

  55. Doodie Machetto on

Rob C., I agree with you on that 100%, which is surprising since I usually disagree with you.

But, since I have to go, please see Rob re: my Prucha opinions.

haha, have a good night everyone and LET’S GO RANGERS!!

  56. Really dude. If you have to try that hard to defend your points. maybe you should rethink them.

Don’t worry Salty will be back soon to help you out I’m sure.

  57. When Prucha does get back in he’s gonna have something major to prove and alot of motivation…which will be a good thing.

  58. Only a few more minutes till I find out if I wasted 20 bucks on raffle tix, or if I have 4 tix in the 200’s for the next home game.

  59. It’s hard to be calm when fucking morons can’t ‘seem to make a valid point without throwing an insult.

So Staal, he’s a big fuck you, because you’re clearly the 2nd biggest fuckin jerk off here besides Newman.

  60. Western Canada Survivor on

Prucha would look good on the Bourret line in Hartford. It has honestly been quite refreshing not watching him get annihilated game in and game out.

It’s hard not to love a guy like Prucha, but as I’ve stated a million times this year, now that hooking, holding, etc… are allowed again, it is more difficult for Prucha to compete. He’s tiny and his shots don’t get through. It was easy in ’05-’06 to stand in front of the net and score because if you were touched, it would be penalized.

Not to say we don’t have problems and that it might not be worth putting Prucha in down the stretch if we run into some issues, but why mess with what’s working. We need home ice-I don’t want to even think about having to play in the Bell Centre or Scotiabank Place in the first round of the playoffs.

    Big weekend for us.

  61. We all root for the Rangers, right? We all hope they win the Cup this year, right?

    Good, good. Just making sure.

    Jeez.

  62. NAd Doodie is the third, because he thinks if your opinion is the minority, you’re just wrong…HA ha…what a fucking clown. You just buy into whatever the trend is…What a dick.

  63. here’s an interesting item, Elisha Cuthbert is currently dating Dion Phanuef of the Calgary Flames, thereby confirming that her same-sex relations with Ovary were nothing more than experimental dalliances

  64. I’d say you’re pretty close newman.

Sam the Boss Man will be around to discipline him soon enough.

  65. Bskul…good stuff bringing us back to HOCKEY talk on the HOCKEY blog. Thank you very much.

Florida is due to lose. This poor excuse for an NHL team is 5-0-0 recenetly? And Jokinen isn’t even scoring? A fresh Ranger team should beat them, yes.

Also…raise your hand if you wanna see a Power Play Goal tonight

    ::Raises Hand::

  66. How about a nice LETS GO RANGERS from ALL of us on here, as NYR fans? hmmmmmmmm?
Pruca27, Salty: That goes for you two angry cry babies as well!!

  67. Yes Lets for the love of God see a PP goal this evening.
One of the main problems I think we ALL can agree with the Rangers all season

  68. What I am going to do tonight is make some nice Salmon with asparagus and then my girlfriend is bringing over some pecan pie with chocolate chocolate chip ice cream. After we eat, she’s going out with her friends and I am gonna watch the game with my dog!

  69. Adam and his Apple on

it really takes a “special” kind of person to lose their cool on a blog/message board lol, people really need to just take a chill pill and let the love flow, i know the city does crazy things to us all but really learn to control your anger or else it will end up controlling you, or buy a punching bag or get a girlfriend for that JK!

what do you tell your girlfriend with 2 black eyes?

nothing you already told her twice =D

oh cmon i love the ladies they really rev my engines but there is no room for them in a news room/ its anchorman not anchor lady!

  70. I bet Beer has a Prucha jersey in his closet that he bought during the 05-06 season, and now he’s just pissed because he’ll have to spend money on a Dawes or a Dubinsky one. After all, he’s just a front running douchebag anyway.

  71. Is Prucha in the lineup tonight. Many I hope so. It will give Prucha27 something to cheer for.

  72. Agreed…today’s topic allowed for bitching: the Power Play. between 16-17% = just not good enough. They have to figure this out before the playoffs.

Even in the old NHL, the Power Play was huge. I was young in ’94, so I remember only the big picture details but not minute specific things. One thing I did not realize until recently: In Game 7 vs. Vancouver, 2 of the 3 Ranger goals were Power Play Goals. That alone proves the importance of the power play!

  73. Shark Boy:

How funny alot of Ranger fans have similar plans this evening
My girlfriend is making filet mignon with a side of string benas and a nice salad, then heading out with her friends as I wathc the Rnager game with my dog.

IF we win tonight, I go out to meet them for drinks, if we lose, I also go out to meet them for drinks.

Happy Friday all , and here’s toasting to hopefully four points by Monday!

  74. “Beer ME: Continuing to be a bl*w job, until his dying day.”

Hey, if you’re gonna do something, may as well dedicate yourself.

“I bet Beer has a Prucha jersey in his closet that he bought during the 05-06 season, and now he’s just pissed because he’ll have to spend money on a Dawes or a Dubinsky one. After all, he’s just a front running douchebag anyway.”

Yeah, I love Justin Dawes. he’s my favorite islander…oops, it’s rangers this week. sorry.

    later all!

  75. formerly formerlyjagrforgovernor on

    Adam and his Apple

Uh…ok, I’ll go kick all those anchor ladies out of my newsroom.

By the way, it’s hu(man) not huwoman, so in my opinion there’s really not enough room for them in this world.

Also, there are no women Rangers, so we’d be fine.

  76. Pruchs tone down the lingo huh? We’ve all adjusted as per Sam’s request… see how cleverly you can slip stuff in, thats half the fun.

Sorry to rub everyone the wrong way today phans. I’m just a realistic view in a sea of good hearted believers.

Here’s to a dominant, Jagr-free power play explosion tonight and hopefully something to continue to build on. Truthfully I’ve been blowing Gomez all year but I’d like to see a little more out of him lately.

  77. “The bills played their last home game the 1st week of december. Obviously the game was a month later. I am actually well-informed when it comes to that event. Really, b/c I was was going(went) and wanted to know exactly what I would see.

They had plenty of time to set up, but with the lake effect snow, they couldn’t get too far ahead of themselves, and face digging themselves out every day.”

You clearly weren’t that informed. haha. Bills played the Giants in Buffalo on December 23rd. That was their last home game. So they did have only a week to prepare.

  78. I’m about to leave work

I’m bringin these dudes gf’s to the game tonight while their bf’s sit at home sit at home and watch tonight after dinner.

    Salmon for them

    “tuna melt” for me

    ;)

  79. it must be nap time for everyone.

jeez, i just skimmed through the posts. it reminds me of rfc a few years ago with all the personal bashing but with not as much flair as they used to do it over at rfc. keep it to the sport, boys. there’s enough to talk about just keeping it to the rangers.

  80. Beer me…

Here is what I was referring to about the outdoor game in Buffalo (from DELLAPINA):

“Staging the next outdoor game in a baseball stadium also is attractive to NHL ice guru Dan Craig. It will give him at least two months to build the rink and prepare the ice – far more time than the NHL had in Buffalo, where the NFL’s Bills didn’t play their final home game until eight days before the Winter Classic.”
    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2008/03/09/2008-03-09_yankee_stadium_game_likely_for_rangers.html

  81. Dawes is more of a pure goal scorer than Prucha. Sorry to tell you.

    LETS GO RANGERS!!!!

    -bandwagon fan

  82. johnny D – I apologize. They were eliminated from the playoffs the first week of December, thus no need for the stadium on January 1st.

“Sorry to rub everyone the wrong way today phans. I’m just a realistic view in a sea of good hearted believers.”

I’d say that’s a pretty fair assessment, and an example of what an apology should look like too.

I’ll be back to read the rests of the posts after that later tonight.

    LET’S GO RANGERS! FLA STYLE.

  83. I had beef stew two nights ago and man, it still has not completely made its way out of my system. I have such bad gas. Not 3 minutes goes by that I don’t light one up. My daughter was so excited that I am off for Spring Break, but I think she runs the other way when she sees me coming now. I crop dust around the house and leave a lethal trail wherever I go.

I say the Rangers win 4-1 tonight.

    Let’s Go Rangers!

  84. These intermissions are driving me nuts. Seeing Gomez cook (who gives a flying f*k), that rusty trio who’s voice sound like nails scraping a blackboard, Sam with his Ed McMahon guffows, Micheletti with his simple non-funny comments and Giannone with his Bruce Beck imitation.

Wish I could fast forward right through it.

    Then there’s Stan and Al….baaaarf!!!!

  85. Backman and Strudwick together? Whose genius move was that? A goal against is only a matter of time with those 2 7th defensemen on the ice.

  86. Unfortunately my prediction just came true, albeit on a Florida power play. How in the world does Renney put those 2 idiots on the ice to kill a penalty? They can’t hold their own at even strength.

  87. Craig The Weatherman on

Here’s hoping for “captain clutch” Chris Drury to work his magic.

  88. Backman can’t skate to save his life. The Rangers are just plain flat tonight. They’ve been outplayed since midway thru the 1st. I wish Renney would call a TO and light someone up. We all know that won’t happen. Backman chokes on open net. (sigh).

  89. Rozi has been terrible tonight. He’s banged up or something because he has been stationary all game. He just hit somebody for the first time all night. What’s with all these Panthers diving everytime they get hit?

  90. LOL, didn’t we read something about Backman being a good skater when that trade came down? He is slow as u know what. Nice, PP for Strangers. Let’s get 1!!!!!!!

  91. Refs are terrible as usual. 3rd time tonight the refs stopped play when puck is in front of net.

  92. get ready the know it all’s will be posoting tonight.. the world is coming to an end etc..

game could have gone either way.. ref’s with the quick whistle on loose pucks is ridiculous also they keep on getting in the way….

the PP is the usual.. Straka should listen to tapes on shooting. The guy refuses to shoot. Dawes lacked pep tonight.overall they played decent did not forecheck that great. obviously strud and backman were weak in there own zone…

if tyutin and backman could hit the net with there shot that would help…

  93. Unreal. The Strangers still think they are the Oilers of the 80’s. Why have Straks at the top when he wouldn’t shoot the puck if he had a gun to his head. I’m not rolling with company line that we’ll hear after this game from Renney. “We were right there at then end, blah, blah, blah”. They came out flat and I put that on the players in the beginning. After the 1st period though, Renney has to start letting these guys know what time of year it is. Struds is a liability(I can’t believe I’m pining for Malik) and Backman is slow. Argggh. I’m done ranting. I’m grabbing a beer. Go Rangers and go Valli tomorrow. I hope the Rangers realize how important the game is in lovely Tampa.

  94. longtimerangersfan on

The Rangers had their chances…McCreary is still against them though.

lenny, I had to put up with Denise Potvin all night, whatta you bitchin about!

  95. longtimerangersfan on

Nasty, um, that prediction didn’t turn out quite like you wanted, did it.

  96. any team with backstroke, mageek, and dudwick on D ain’t goin’ to win no cup nohow.

  97. No, my prediction did not come true. And my beef stew problem is still hanging around as well.

I am not going to cry about this. We lost. I am not happy at all. But there were periods of time during the game that the panthers completely owned us. Their puck pursuit was pretty damn impressive in that second period. We had our chances but we didn’t capitalize. Vokoun was ok, but we made him look good. I thought Hank played great, but the D didn’t help him too much tonight. We can’t have Backman and Struds together out there.

I see Valli in net tomorrow night and let’s hope we can put a few in for him.

    Let’s go Rangers!

  98. Good job Renney and bloggers …. “Keep the same lineup things are rosy” bloggers are saying (Stall Wart) ….

Well, as I predicted = Rangers lose … they kept the same lineup — got NOTHING from 3rd and 4rth line and to make it worse Renney has BACKMAN AND AVERY killing a penalty !! .. what the #($& … BACKMAN and Avery should never kill a penalty …. Good Job Renney …

  99. longtimerangersfan on

lenny, no but he kept naming the wrong team or the wrong player several times. I long for Jim Gordon and Bill Chadwick.

Gomez was the BEST Ranger on the ice tonight, IMHO.

  100. koffy nice post, you expect them to go undefeated the last 25????

classic clown….they should have changed the lineup because you had a hunch!!!!!sounds smart…

  101. So, after 3 days of rest, they had seemingly less energy than the Panthers. Nice. Even better, Drury’s line contributes almost nothing lately. Callahan looks like a shadow of himself of a month ago. Strudwick…ok, it’s not his foul that he looks worse than AHLer.
No coaching whatsoever – this is the biggest problem.

  102. Yeah, Chadwick and Gordon were good. At times I thought Gordon would shill, but not 100% of the time like Sam, JD and Micheletti.

  103. Looks like the world is falling again! Oh no! What are we gonna do. I knew at some point this had to end.
Koffy I’m happy you wanted the lines changed, I wouldn’t want anyone to think that we think alike. Your post suggests that it is the bloggers fault that we lost tonight…moron.
Koffy please blame Renney…thats good…the team went 13 in a row without a loss and now Renney is at fault.
    Laughable…just funny stuff!
…the Rangers should have been 71 – 0 tonight if it wasn’t for Renney, Malik, Backman, Straka, Jagr, Rozi, Struds, Blah blah blah blah…

  104. Prucha27, where are you…looks like you might get your wish for tomorrow, Prucha in Callahan out
But you should probably run it by Koffy cause he knows best, and predicted the devastating loss that we suffered tonight. LOL

  105. “In a feat unsurpassed by any athlete in any sport, Gordie Howe finished in the top five in scoring for 20 straight seasons.”

    the real Mr. Hockey

pussy-chin jagr couldn’t carry his jockstrap

  106. we knew they were not going to win every game at the end of the season. they were flat last night they need to come out tonight and get right back into it..

    Vally tonight??????

  107. longtimerangersfan on

This, from the “Rodent” and I couldn’t agree more:

‘Tween you ‘n’ me, I’m skating Stephen Valiquette on Saturday evening. And if Petr Prucha is game-ready, I’m sitting Straka in favor of Kid Kourageous, if for no other reason than Marty could do with some game-watching from a different vantage point. In the last quarter-season (21 games) Stracena has but three tallies. Prucha gets roasted when he scores as few and plays half the minutes. But somehow Straka gets a bye.

  108. There are two ways of looking at it, obviously rodent thinks the rangers need to score more goals and that’s fine. I’m not sure adding Prucha is going to change that and be careful what you wish for, Straka is a good two way player where prucha is not. I stated yesterday on this blog that the rangers d-men are to soft and they showed it right on cue last night. That will be the rangers down fall going in to the playoffs.

NHL reviews Pronger stomp after getting clearer video of incident Canadian Press Mar 14, 2008, 7:00 PM EDT
    Pronger

    Kesler

TORONTO – Anaheim Ducks defenceman Chris Pronger faces a possible suspension for his apparent stomp on Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler.

The incident occured on Wednesday night but the NHL didn’t originally have proper video evidence to suspend Pronger. Then on Thursday night the NHL saw a new angle that gave a better view of the incident.

Pronger is slated to have a phone hearing with the NHL on Saturday.

“He stomped on me,” Kesler told the Vancouver Sun after the game. “He got me on the calf.”

Pronger has been suspended seven previous times in his career, including during last June’s Stanley Cup final with Ottawa when he elbowed Dean McAmmond in the head and was forced to sit out one game.

  110. longtimerangersfan on

Incidentally, and I’ve said it before too as someone pointed out, if you deliberately injure someone you should sit out as long as the person injured, HOWEVER LONG THAT IS!

  111. I saw that play where Chris Pronger stomped on the guy’s leg. Chris Pronger should get at least the same amount of games that simon got and it should include the playoffs.

  112. longtimerangersfan,
yea, that was beer me yesterday that made that suggestion but
that has been mentioned before, I don’t see the league going in that direction.

  113. longtimerangersfan on

tomg, I realize that it is a fact of life that sometimes when you get injured you lose your place in the lineup if the team plays well in your absence but Prucha is a scorer and if used CORRECTLY, ahem, Mr. Renney, on the PP, he could be effective. As Rodent pointed out…couldn’t be any worse than Straka now.

  114. Doodie Machetto on

A couple of smaller things (I’ll let everyone else disect the larger problems of the team):

    1) Backman’s penalty was not a penalty. The stick was on the legs, and it never came above the waste. If the standard is above the waste, that’s not a hook, especially since the Florida player didn’t go down. So, I can’t really blame that one on him.

    2) Jokinen’s goal was triggered by Hank playing the puck poorly. We’re the second most profitable franchise in the league. Hank is the second highest paid goaltender in the league. You mean to tell me that we can’t get a coach purely to show him how and when to play the puck?

    3) The hilariousness of my girlfriend watching Rangers games with me continues. Last night’s comments:

    a) (Upon seeing Straka) “AGH! What’s wrong with his face?!”

    b) (After I told her the guy in the purple shirt was Ron Duguay) “Did you just say his name was ‘Too Gay?'”

  115. Doodie Machetto on

They gave Prucha top PP time for like a month and he scored a total of ZERO goals.

Prucha isn’t the answer for the PP. It’s getting rid of Straka on the point, and getting Rozsival away from Jagr. No shots from the point=no goals for the unit.

  116. Doodie Machetto on

Oh, I’m sorry, he had 2 in one game against Toronto back in December in a 5 PPG night for the team. CLEARLY a fluke since nothing like it was ever repeated, particularly for Prucha, who had gone 17 games without a goal.

  117. longtimerangersfan on

Boy, I must have missed a lot of games as I don’t remember Prucha on the PP that much. Perhaps he was on the last 15 seconds after Jagr and co. finally left the ice?

  118. The writing was on the wall … 5 of the last 6 games the Rangers opponents have gotten at least 1 point … obviously staal mart, stuart and others ignore that … they lose to Tampa then lose to Pitt … then they have to play Philly …. Sure Staal … keep the same lineup … play Backman 30 minutes … Renney is a reactor not pro-active and as I predicted (Rodent also) Rangers lose.

  119. Hockeyman Rangers #2 on

Settle down folks this is one game, maybe we needed a loss for a realality check. THEY WILL COME ON STRONG TONIGHT, THEY WILL.

  120. Duguay made a great analysis on MSG last night. Might be too candid for the brass so who knows if we see him again.

  121. That’s it. I’m done. If Koffy doesn’t coach the rest of the season we’re going to miss the playoffs a la ’07 Mets. Koffy … If you check on the rangers website, there’s a mailing address. I’m pretty sure they’d take your resume for the head coaching job. Give it a shot.

It’s 1 loss. ok, so now we’re 17-6-4 in our last 27. Too bad the trade deadline already passed. We should have traded everyone and brought in new guys, a new coach, jagr should change his sticks again, straka should watch from the press box b/c he obviously doesn’t understand how to play hockey after 35 years.

If Prucha is the answer to the PP, then we have MUCH bigger problems than we thought.

You want the biggest positive to come out of last night? Well, we were clearly not going to go undefeated the rest of the way, so if you’re going to give up points, why not give them to a team that’s way behind you and outside of your division? It’s not the end of the world, and I’m glad it was the Panthers that we lost to and not pitt or nj.

Thankfully I get to watch tonights game on a huge HD screen. Isn’t it odd that my mom has an 50″ hdtv and I watch on a 36″ old-skool picture tube tv? Something ain’t right.

    We’ll win tonight. (and Tuesday)

  122. “Might be too candid for the brass so who knows if we see him again.”
You know lenny, I kinda had the same thought. Dolan will have him kidnapped, and brainwashed like Trautwig and Fishler soon.

  123. I think Backman played pretty well last night and Jokinen’s goal was completely due to Hank’s inability to use his glove hand. The shot from the point was going over the net. Hank took a swipe and missed and there was the Joke to put the puck away. Besides puckhandling, Hank has other flaws in his game, but let’s be real, they cannot win them all. I think Renney should have let them all lay out on the beach for 2 days, though. Shanahan looked better last night, Gomer was flying, the d was pretty tight in the neutral zone, but one bad goal by Hank.

  124. Western Canada Survivor on

While I think the real reason we lost is that we probably we’re a little cocky and didn’t throw enough at the net, the powerplay could sure use a shakeup.

I remember in February ’07, our power play was failing miserably and Renney then took Shanahan off Jagrs Power Play line. I’m a little surprised they have played so much together this year considering it clearly didn’t work last year. I also don’t think it would hurt just using our first and second lines as the power play lines-there is already chemistry there-why not give it a shot? Lots of teams just throw out their top two lines on the power play-Montreal does it and look what they can do.

  125. longtimerangersfan on

Beer said: “If Prucha is the answer to the PP, then we have MUCH bigger problems than we thought.”

Beer, no one said Prucha is the answer to the PP but why not try something, ANYTHING different!!!! If a team can’t find a PP with the PROVEN scoreres that the Rangers have then whose fault is it? Can’t be the coaches fault.

  126. longtimerangersfan on

Guys, if you want to keep your jobs you can’t talk bad about your employer…it cost Chadwick his job years ago. Go to your CEO and say something bad, deserved or not, and see how long you last. BTW, I don’t like it either but it’s a fact of life…get over it!

  127. LTRF, generally, talked about how being good enough wasn’t good enough. Duguay said that against a team like Florida, one with inferior talent, the Rangers had to come out and exert themselves. Instead, he saw complacency and that the Panthers were playing with much more desire. He had a line that was something like, “It’s not just making the playoffs, it’s how you make the playoffs.”

Also, said our power play was too fancy, that we need to get a guy with “a big butt” in front of the net. They can’t be afraid of being hit by the puck.

  128. Hey Everybody,

Maybe we should ease of on the Straka talk…
First off, I agree he needs to shoot the puck more…
Beyond that, I didn’t hear anybody complaining about him playing the point the past two seasons when he had 76 and 70 points. Why don’t you look at his linemates… Drury and Callahan… totally different mentality of the way the game should be played… Straka needs to be played with players who see the game the same way… he played his best with Nylander and Jagr in NY and Kovalev and Lang in Pittsburgh… and why swap Straka for Prucha… Prucha is useless… can’t play D and get knocked around like a rag doll… Straka hustles, plays PK… it’s obvious that line with Drury and Callahan can’t make 2 passes in one shift… How many times does Callahan fumble that puck… I feel embarassed for him… Callahan has 8 pts in 41 games? Give me a break… Straka is a world class player.

  129. Hank did give Jokinen that 3rd goal. Someone needs to teach the guy how to play the puck. Also, why the hell was Straka on the PP in the final minute? That goes to show you how dumb Renney is. He should have had Avery in there, a guy who always parks himself in front of the net. Its pathetic that Nyr has split the series the 4 of the 5 shitty south east teams. Hopefully tonight they dont do the same thing.

    BTW

Please tell me you all saw when Joe Michaletti accidentally drew the Penis and Balls on the Panther player when he was trying to show the viewers where the puck was. He said “sorry for that” or something like that, cause he knew exactly what people would think it was. Lol of all the luck the guy has, he didnt draw it on his face or his stomach, it had to be down there where it belongs. This guy is so fuggin funny, he is the perfect replacement for JD, especially last season when a Ranger broke his stick, and he said “he broke his shit” by accident.

  130. BTW

Im hoping Straka retires next season, so we can either give Prucha that spot, or give Cherepanov a big shot next season, if he has what it takes. He sucks on the point on the PP, if he isn’t playing with Jagr then he’s pretty much not there offensively. He’s a good player, but i think he should call it a career after this season.

  131. If we get outplayed and lose to Tampa tonight then I would say we can worry a little bit, but I don’t really think that is going to happen. We have answered back during this streak we had going after bad games. I think we are going to come out really hard tonight and take the lead and not give it away for the rest of the game.

  132. Hank in nets again tonight per Dellapina.

Bottom line for the loss last night is the same as it always is…

Our defense is too slow and can’t handle speed well… therefore the forwards have to come back and help more than other teams’ forwards do… when the’re not effective at that… we lose.

If our PP could just be mediocre it would erase some of those issues but it’s not mediocre… it’s abyssmal.

  133. Cherepanov ain’t coming over next season, he has one more year of serfdom for his Russian team.

  134. Riche’,
I agree 100%, the rangers D-men are to slow and to soft, this will be the rangers down fall in the playoffs IMO, especially against teams like carolina, ottawa, montreal.
