Avery fined $2,500

49

Sean Avery was fined $2,500 and the Rangers were tabbed for $25,000 as a result of the left wing’s water bottle throwing incident on Sunday. This news came courtesy not of the league or the Rangers, but of Avery himself.

I won’t detail the attire he was sporting when he announced as much. Let’s just say it wasn’t pretty.
In other news, everyone practiced today, although Marek Malik and Paul Mara were each still in non-contact green jerseys. Malik is day-to-day, and Mara said he’s about a week away.

More in a bit, including Jaromir Jagr’s response to Glen Sather’s statement in Prague that he wants to re-sign the captain at season’s end….

    REPOST:

Parros and Prucha, my comment has sparked some discussion between you both, and I think you’re both at the extreemes, meanwhile, I meant to be somewhere in the middle.

I said Shanny as PP/SO specialist, but I would want him compensated as such. So Prucha, your argument that Prucha would be paid 3/4 million less fails, because I would only want him if he were being paid 3/4 million less than he is now. As for Prucha being money in the shootout, that’s just false. Prucha went 0 for 6 last year. He is 1 for 3 this year and was 1 for 3 his rookie year. That makes him 2 for 12 lifetime. He officially sucks in the shootout.

That said, Shanahan can no longer play an effective even strength role over an entire season. And if the choice is between having Shanny at full cost (aka, his current salary or close to it) and not havibng him at all, I choose not having him at all, and spending the money to bolster our defensive corps.

Now, buckmeister has accused me of being in Sather’s pocket because I said that. Well, allow me to retort:

First, Baranka sucks. He is another middle to bottom pairing defenseman. We have 6 of them for 4 spots. I’m talking about a top guy. So forget Baranka.

You also mention Sanguinetti. Well, Two problems with him. First, he is going to spend at least one year in Hartford because he is lousy defensively. Second, he is an offensive defenseman, and the type of defenseman I think we should be trying to acquire is a hard hitting shutdown defenseman. Our defensive corps is too soft overall, and we lack a defenseman capable of individually shutting down star players.

So yes, spend the money to bolster our defensive corps.

As for bashing Valliquette, I will continue to do so. It’s nothing personal against the guy. I think he’s a good teammate and an adequate stand-in. But I still think we should get a veteran back up because I think it will make Lundqvist better. Do you think Hank can learn anything from Vally besides how to keep a bench warm? A solid veteran can teach Hank about maintaining composure, focus, and maybe a thing or two about the actual playing of the position (PUCKHANDLING!!!). So, no, I am not for bringing back Valliquette for another season.

Oh no, they fined him for less than he probably spent on his ridiculous looking glasses!

It’s a slap on the wrist. They didn’t even make it public. I’m OK with it.

  3. yeah. If Avery is resigned, this won’t be the last time he’s fined. I guess we should just get used to it. I’m sure slats will take $25k off his contract offer. haha

Sam – why do you have to tease us like that? tell us already!

Didn’t hear about Pronger last night(prev thread). That really, really sux. He’s on my fantasy team and we just started the playoffs.

  4. REPOST (w/Correction):

Doodie – He’s 3 for 14 and the actually all have been shootout winning goals. He’s 1 of only 4 players to have scored for the Rangers in the shootout this year.

I’d really like to hear your definition of “suck” though, because your standards must be pretty high.

Look, like I’ve been saying. Prucha isn’t going to replace Shanahan. Butl et’s be serious, who can? You can’t go into the summer thinking that you have to replace a 600+ goal scorer and future hall of famer. You go out thinking “Who’s going to be my #2 RW, or #3 RW” and I think if Prucha has a strong camp, he can be either.

Either way, to keep Shanahan on the roster for SO’s, which may or may not happen, or to contribute to a PP that he’s currently not really helping, doesn’t make any sense to me. You like him in the locker room, hire him as a coach.

As for Vally, Lundy isn’t a rookie anymore. He doesn’t need a backup to coach him. We have Benney Allaire for that. Was Healy coaching Richter? Was Brygalov coaching Giguere? YOu think Gerger was “coaching” Ward after he was so bad that he lost his job to Ward? Even if you think Gerber was giving Ward advice, if you’re Ward, do you listen to that? I don’t.

A veteran b/u is in no way necessary to have a Cup winning goalie.

  5. youtube is really failing me, the last few incidents that I have heard fines coming form I haven’t been able to find. This Pronger being the most recent…

  6. REPOST/RESPONSE

To pay Shanny $x millions to play on the 3rd or 4th line and be a PP/SO guy makes no sense.

If you get the PP actually *working*, it makes a FEATHERLOAD of sense. The Power Play should have been this teams bread and butter this year. Can you Imagine if it was actually half the threat it should have been? We’d be farting through silk.

Also, Shanahan is not meant to “go to the net” amymore. He’s a puck firing machine. He still has one of the best releases in the NHL. Look how well he’s been playing since he’s been rested. You use Shanahan sparingly, and you see better results. However Tom Renney’s got him running around on the 2nd line, PP and PK… no feathers he’s gonna get worn down.

Shanahan @ $3M w/ a couple of real incentives = no brainer. NO BRAINER!

  7. Salty: The PP isn’t working now, with Shanny on it. He has 7 goals in his last 20 games. 4at ES

  8. CORRECTED:

Salty: The PP isn’t working now, with Shanny on it. He has 7 goals in his last 20 games. 4 at ES, 3 on the PP.

Shanny is a guy who needs to be fed the puck. If no one is feeding him the puck on the PP, he’ useless.

  9. Can someone explain the term velocity to me? I know what speed is i.e. the train I was riding was going 60 mph. But why do they always say velocity?

  10. They’re just trying to sound intelligent.

Speed and direction make up velocity. If you’re traveling 60mph in a straight line, but then turn and continue at 60mph, you maintained speed, but changed velocity. Basically, any change in a moving object is a change in velocity.

  11. “Definition: Velocity is a vector measurement of the rate and direction of motion or, in other terms, the rate and direction of the change in the position of an object. The scalar (absolute value) magnitude of the velocity vector is the speed of the motion. In calculus terms, velocity is the first derivative of position with respect to time.”

    Duh…I thought everyone knew that.

  12. Actually saw the Avery incident. He threw the water bottle, it clipped off the top of the side-glass partition, and it twirled its way onto sections 41 and 42. Made a pretty nice splash landing because the top part broke off and everyone in those few rows, including a father and his kids, got wet. The man then took the now-empty bottle and raged his way to the side of the penalty box and started hitting the side partition to get Avery’s attention. Security guards swooped in to prevent the incident from further escalation. In between periods, a mop-and-bucket guy was cleaning up, and the father and his kids had left the game..
A bunch of buddies and I will be sitting in section 127 tomorrow at the BankAtlantic Center – if you’re there, feel free to swing by and say hello. If you’re watching on TV, listen for the “Lets Go Rangers” chants!

  13. Beer Me: Very funny, but I’ve been busy with Jill Nicolini who I dumped Betty Childs for.

OK So if Mike Mussina is throwing the ball 88 miles per hour, where does velocity come into play?

So then Al Iafrate used to shoot the puck in those competitions like 102 mph sometimes. How come they didn’t say velocity then?

  14. Louis: Does it really matter? People use the term speed and velocity interchangeably, even though they aren’t quite the same thing. It isn’t the worst butchering of words in the world. Who really cares?

  15. Salty: The PP isn’t working now, with Shanny on it. He has 7 goals in his last 20 games. 4 at ES, 3 on the PP.

Shanny is a guy who needs to be fed the puck. If no one is feeding him the puck on the PP, he’ useless.

    …..

Do I need to respond to this?

Prucha is not a guy who needs to be fed the puck? How many games has Shanahan been back since injury? How many points since he’s been back? I honestly don’t know, but the numbers seemed pretty good last time I caught them, I don’t think it’s a fluke.

NOTICE: How I said *if* you can get the PP working?
Wait, are you implying that Brendan Shanahan is hurting our Power Play?

  16. Doodie Machetto on

    “Was Healy coaching Richter?”

Yes. Yes he was. No doubt about it. Just like Vanbiesbrouck did before him.

I had him 2 for 12 from stats I got on sportsnet.ca, but I’ll bite your 3 for 14. Still sucks.

What is my definition of sucks? Less than 25%. He is barely even 20. Either way, he is far from “money,” as you put it.

He might be only 1 of 4 who have scored in the shootout, but that doesn’t mean he’s good. It just shows how much the rest of the team sucks.

  17. Who Needs Lohan on

For some reason I envisioned Avery wearing nothing but a jockstrap with 25 $100 bills sticking out of it……

  18. doodie-

the report on sanguinetti is that his defensive game was lacking until he spent some time in hartford last year, where he retooled his game a bit and came back as a very solid defensive player for the brampton batallion. while he’s not a defensive specialist, he’s got a ton of offensive talent to offset that.

and if you’re going to tell me that we don’t need a puck moving PP point man (which is exactly how sanguinetti is described) then i say you’re crazy – rozsival is an average pp quarterback at best, and while staal may fit the billing one day, sanguinetti is constructed that way already. he may not make the big club right away for 08-09 but he will definitely get a shot.

  19. “He might be only 1 of 4 who have scored in the shootout, but that doesn’t mean he’s good. It just shows how much the rest of the team sucks.”

And to further that…Marcel Hossa was a shootout contributor too. Do we want him back to take over the PP?

  20. Where did I say Shanny hurt the PP? I Said he isn’t helping it either right now.

And yes, Prucha can puck up garbage goals and score on deflections, he doesn’t need to be fed the puck.

Either way, we’ll agree to disagree. Either way, I’m not into re-signing a 40 year old who can’t skate for their leadership, I don’t care who it is. It didn’t work with Messier, and he could still skate.

Doesn’t mean I hate Shanny, or that I don’t respect what he’s doen in his time here, but in the wards or Brett Favre “All good things must come to an end.”

  21. Doodie….I am starting to think Prucha27 might actually be Peter Prucha the way he fights for him on this blog.

I 100% agree with you that we need a banging, slam em around defenseman. We need the 2nd coming of Beukeboom. You see the way Rosy stepped around that guy coming down on him the other night? Laughable. A guy like Colin White or Scott Stevens would step up and remove the guy from the puck and just crush! And clearing the wood from in front of the net? That NEVER happens by any of our D-men. That is a problem. In my view, it’s our biggest weakness heading into the postseason.

Yes a puck moving offensive D-man would be nice, but that is our 2nd choice. We need a D-man that people fear. It CANNOT be a Euro guy. Rosy, Malik, Backman are all soft when it comes to hitting people. Toots has that nice hip check, but not much else. Staal needs to go on the Girardi off season workout regimen. Struds tries but he is too slow. And Mara, who the heck knows.

I think our D does a decent job. But their physicality remains our #1 problem.

  22. Doodie Machetto on

Oh and by the way, Marcel Hossa had scored in the shootout for the team earlier this year, so Prucha is one of 5 (granted, one of four current players to have scored this year).

I like Prucha and all, but you have to accept the guy’s limitations.

  23. Doodie – No one is saying the guy is Superman, just that he has something to bring to the table. With the way Straka is currrently playing, and Shanahan’s ineptness at ES, why not let the kid play a few games?

  24. Doodie Machetto on

“It CANNOT be a Euro guy” I don’t think it’s being European that’s the issue. It’s just being soft. Tyutin is European and our hardest hitter, just like Kaspar was before him.

And I don’t think anyone will confuse Mara with a tough guy anytime soon, and he’s American. Girardi isn’t really a banger either. And as for Staal and Strudwick “if” arguments (if he were bigger, if he were faster): If the queen had balls she’d be the king.

It doesn’t change the need, but to say “not European” is pretty meaningless.

  25. “…just that he has something to bring to the table.”

Yes, he does. But not as much as the guys that have taken his spot.

  26. TSN – Anaheim Ducks defenceman Chris Pronger will not face any disciplinary action from the National Hockey League for stomping on Vancouver Canucks centre Ryan Kesler on Wednesday night.

  27. Ok agreed – 5.3m is too much to resign him (Shanny) next year. I’d have him back for 2.5-3.5m though… As for this season and last – I think he has done a great job. And I bet he continues to do a great job in the playoffs for us.

Otherwise – New Newman… I think you are right – he is the real Prucha! And you are also right about the D… they are a decent bunch… but we need a dman other teams fear. Who doesn’t though!

  28. Newman: It’s becoming apparent that you’re just a bit anti-Euro. To say that we need a hard hitting defenseman that can’t be Euro is another mind-boggling concept. Let’s see…Kasparaitis, Lithuanian…Vishnevski, Russian…Chara, Czech…Salei, Belarussian…Tolefsson, Norwegian…All hard nosed defenseman. And let’s not even list the forwards from Europe that can play with an edge…

  29. Doodie Machetto on

The only player I would be amenable to him replacing is Straka, but since Prucha doesn’t kill penalties, I wouldn’t make the switch.

Prucha should go to Hartford for conditioning if he wants games. All three lines are clicking too much to swap him out.

  30. Doodie – I’m not even sure that Straka is on the PK anymore. Last game I noticed 3 sets of forwards: Drury/Shanny, Gomez/Cally, Avery/Betts.

On an unrelated note, I’d like to see Sjostrom take Shanny’s place on the PK, just to rest Shanny. I also love Sjostrom’s speed.

  31. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

I think that Shanny’s cap hit is actually $4.5million, $2.5million base + $2million incentive (for playing 10 games) and he has another bonus of $.8million contingent on the Rangers winning the first round of the playoffs.

However, I believe the bonus structure somehow delays the cap hit. The bonuses (worth up to $3.3million) may actually be a hit against the 08-09 team cap, I’m pretty sure it’s something bizarre like that.

  32. Ante- “If you’re watching on TV, listen for the “Lets Go Rangers” chants!”

    I’ll be listening

    Let’s go Rangers!

I was away and didnt see the game, is this really what happened? Talk about way over reacting to a simple accident. I am surprised the father would try to provoke an incident when his children were there. There are a lot of assumptions that can be made about Sean Avery and while most of them would probably ring true, throwing a water bottle at children does not sound like something any human(especially a hockey player because it’s such a family sport) would do on purpose and I doubt highy there was any bad intentions on Avery’s part. I am saddened that the father would not take his apology at face value and wound up leaving the game. Its water, it will dry, why leave in such a snit? It sounds like he set such a bad example for his kids.

That being said, will those kids benefit in any way from that $25K fine?

  34. I was at the game when Avery threw the bottle and clearly saw it happen from beginning to end. Avery got into the box and went bizerk. He threw 2 bottles, the first didn’t make it out of the box, the second landed in the stands. The truth is thank god Avery is a good hockey player because he would make a lousy quarterback. He was clearly throwing the bottle onto the ice but he throws so much like a girl that the bottle flew unintentionally into the stands. My first thought was, damn, Avery can’t throw. And then the guy completely over reacted, he’s a typical corporate ticket guy, not a true Ranger fan.

  35. Last thing I heard about the water bottle incident was that the father and his kids were taken aside, given souvenir sticks and such, and went away happy.

What an example to set for your kids! Rant and rave and get something you don’t really deserve in the first place. If more people treated accidents like accidents, there’d be a lot less tension. That’s why they’re called “accidents” right?

  36. Why the frick were the Rangers fined for Avery’s hissy fit? They had nothing to do with it.
