Christian Backman, wearing 55, and Fred Sjostrom, wearing his countryman Jan Erixon’s old No. 20, are here and are on the ice.
Josh Gratton and David LeNeveu are headed to Hartford.
More in a bit…
Welcome to the NY RANGERS BOYS!!!!!
Now lets play some hockey.
Well, I guess since Orr is still injured, I hope to hear later today, “Sjostrom is skating on a line with Betts and Prucha.” I really don’t think Hollweg gives us much defense, despite being on that line. It’s all about Orr and Betts and the defensemen.
IMO: This is going to be very good for Henry. Having some country mates on the team will be a good thing to ease his mind and make him feel at home.
Ante – I know FSNNY is owned by Cablevision, but the article I read didn’t mention if FOX is dropping their part ownership, but I imagine they are. I guess it will be like places that have CSN, still airing some games from FSN nationally along with shows like Best Damn.
Nothing against Shanny, but I’d like to see Sjostrom – Gomez – Dawes/Callahan at least attempted
Pavel, why would you break up chemistry. Are you Tom Renney??
Any chance you can fill us in on what line Sjostrom is playing on and the defensive pairings we’ll be seeing. Hope these moves pan out for a strong push into the post season.
backman will be with staal, its the only combo that makes sense
Good point. Newsflash, our franchise player is being comforted by management aquiring some of his former team mates and countrymen. Lets see if the rabble can manage to not complain about it this time around.
The last time, it was Czechs this and Czechs that, whine whine whine.
(mean while) The Rangers do incredably will out of the lockout, and even better the year after, Czechs and all.
When do we just shut it and enjoy?
zg, good post.
“When do we just shut it and enjoy?”
I like it.
Let’s just enjoy the run, boys.
Let’s Go Rangers!!
Salty – That’s what I thought of too when I saw him on Phoenix the first time. His nickname should be fries.
In case anybody didn’t see my post yesterday, it’s SHOO-strom according to what I’ve heard on previous broadcasts.
“There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.” —President George W. Bush, Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002
Sjostrom is fast, and so is Gomez.. how about Sjostrom – Gomez – Shanny!
I know he’ll start off on the 3rd or 4th, but nothing wrong with trying it for a game.
What I meant to say was “There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.” —President George W. Bush, Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002
yeah, Pavel, not a good idea to change anything but the checking line.
richard s – Careful. If it’s renney that can ruin the chemistry, then it has to be renney that created it. It’s not both ways.
Sjostrom is going to be good for the Rangers. I have high hopes about this kid. A checking line of Sjostrom, Betts and Orr will really help this team out right now.
Not only will it be able to play good defense now but it will have some offense as well. Finally a player to compliment Blair Betts.
I’m a nerd and uh I’m pretty proud of it!
Q: “When do we just shut it and enjoy?”
A: When the Rangers are consistantly good.
“I really don’t think Hollweg gives us much defense, despite being on that line. It’s all about Orr and Betts and the defensemen.”
What a crock…Do you watch them in the defensive zone or in transition?..Orr provides absolutley ZERO in the defensive zone and transition zone (becasue he’s too slow—-Orr’s worth is when we have the puck in the offensive zone)...Hollweg’s forechecking (MUCH better then Orr), skating (ditto) and, especially, solid defensive coverage/positioning (ditto) are a big key to how well that line plays defense….
Thank God, Orr will be an afterthoiugh come the POs…
Adam Hall called.
I’m a nerd too. I just found that out tonight. We have news for the beautiful people there’s a lot more of us than there are of you.
Louis, next year we’re going to be able to take over the Greek Council.
Sjostrom is not cracking the top 3 lines. Just when we have 3 lines clicking after 2 years of mixing and matching people want to throw a 4th liner like Sjostrom onto the 2nd line. This kid has some upside but he’s a role player, nothing else.
We finally have 3 lines that have been scoring and playing effectively. Let’s not tinker with this chemistry. Sjostrom should be playing on the 4th line with Betts and Prucha/Hollweg.
You just got your asses whipped by a bunch of goddam nerds, nerds! Well if I was you I would do something about it. I would get up and redeem myself in the eyes of my maker, my father and my coach.
I thought I was looking at my mother’s old douche-bag, but that’s in Ohio.
:books flight to Ohio:
so now Prucha is a relegated to a fourth line rotation with orr, sjostrom and hollweig? That should help his offensive production.
And how bout we take the revenge of the nerds quotes to another blog
Pavel…Richard and Beer Me! and someone else above are right and you are wrong. Sorry dude. Sjostrom is a 4th liner. All of a sudden you want this guy who is known as a defensive player and a penalty killer to bust into any of the top 3 lines? Come on man. Our top 3 lines are starting to click. The first 2 are untouchable and the 3rd line has Dawes as its weakest link and he is not even that weak at all. I am just wondering if Prucha can crack into the line up? But it definitely isn’t going to be Sjostrom ahead of Prucha.
Sam, did Erixon seem bummed out that #20 wasn’t going to the rafters? I kid….
someone else = Rob L….sorry dude
PETE, because no one will every truly be free until nerd persecution ends!
ORR-HOLLWEG-BETTS are a collective -30 on the year. Sather should have dumped them ALL, long ago.
Beside HL, Vally and Wilkman, the new guy, Lenevue, may be good enough to push Wilkman for the Hartford job which will be good for both.
For those who think Sather didn’t help the team, let me put it this way.
You are the Rangers GM and another GM calls you and says I’ll give you Backman for a 4th rounder. Do you take it or leave it?
Then a second GM calls you and offers you Sjorstrom, Gratton and Lenevue for Hossa and Monyoya. Again, do you take it or leave it?
Me? I’d take both of them. Remember, Sather didn’t have many choips to bargain with. He had no Brian Campbell (wonder if anybody asked for Rozsival?), the wrong Hossa or players of that calibre. The team is minisculely better than before the deals.
No idea how long Orr is out, anybody know how he got hurt? Another thugzie type we can sure use, especially if he can skate and be at least good enough for 4th line duty.
Sjorstrom is the sleeper in the deal. A change of scenery may just work for him. Even if he doesn’t, can’t be any worse than Hossa. We’ll get our first look at him tomorrow.
Montoya was constantly getting injured and hopefully Lenevue will be more durable and like I said, push Wilkman.
Even a soft Backman should be better than Strudwick, Mara or Malik. Would have preferred a thumper but they were all sold out. For now, Backman is taking Mara’s place. When Mara comes back, Strudwick or Malik will sit.
Question: Do the Rangers get any picks from teams signing their UFA’s?
Next order of business, sign Avery, Vally and Dawes. Not sure if I want Rozi back. Depends on who’s available as a UFA after this season. Sather will have to look in his crystal ball and make a decision there.
The lines have been clicking, and they have been:
Avery, Dubinsky, Jagr
Dawes, Gomez, Shanahan
Straka, Drury, Callahan
Hollweg, Betts, Orr
Prucha has been hurt, and Hossa couldn’t crack the top 12 regularly.
He is now gone, by someone whom we believe can crack the top 12.
Prucha is now back (I think).
Orr we know is hurt to some degree.
Either there is a bit of tinkering with the top 9 (probably not), or there is a new fourth line of Whipersnapper, Gambling Problem, and Velcro.
Gilbert, classic and a very fitting reply.
no compensation for a team signing an unrestricted i dont think. Like I said yesterday Sjostrom could be fine, but I don’t get why Moore or Byers couldn’t be given an actual shot. I probably would have passed on both deals or at least ask for picks only from phoenix. I don’t like having a big soft defenseman locked up for next year (and St. Louis fans seemed thrilled to get rid of him), id rather see Pock get a chance or one of the other young guys.
if these new guys are better than the players in hartford than sather has done an even worse job drafting talent than I previously thought.
lenny – I don’t know if you were referring to a conv that I was having with Salty regarding Slats. But if you were, you missunderstood. We didn’t say that he ‘didn’t help the team’. Instead, saying that he is not capable of dealing with other GM’s in the league for players of a caliber higher than a 4th liner, depth dman, or draft picks.
pete – correct. On June 30th a UFA is yours. On 7/1…they’re history. No comp.
“if these new guys are better than the players in hartford than sather has done an even worse job drafting talent than I previously thought.”
Yes, your original thought was wrong.
I’ve voiced my opinion which is fairly easy to defend. The short version: We had crap youth for a long time. Now we have decent youth and think they’re all Gretzky. In comparison to other teams, our youth is average. No top-tier players there…yet. It takes time.
Hospo – My biggest thing with Orr is that I don’t see him doing anything wrong. He has to be in the line-up for his fights, too. When Hollweg forechecks, he hits people a couple seconds after they get rid of the puck, and other times he takes stupid penalties. There’s no use for him. Something must be working for that line to be good enough defensively, so I’m gonna say it’s Betts and Orr. For argument’s sake, taking the average, thier ”-30” means that they have given up 10 more goals than they have scored (probably about 15 given up overall), which I’ll take from a line that Renney tries to play against top lines.
lennynyr – Thank God there is someone else who is sane and wants Valiquette to be re-signed. That’s a very good post outta you, except Strudwick is already sitting. I actually think Backman will sit when Mara comes back, but we’ll have to see how he plays. Malik has been playing well enough recently to stay in.
Beer Me! – Well, Montoya was #7 on the Hockey’s Future list at the beginning of this year. They took his name off of the list now for some reason, but I think that’s where he was. And Staal is #13, Cherpanov #18. Obviously, they’re not the only source for prospects, but they’re pretty good.
pig – I’m not sure I read that the way you intended. But I’m pretty sure they took his name off the list cause they realized they were wrong ;)
As far as the others…Chery, at this point, could turn into anything. I guess my point was missed also. The long version explains that guys on the nhl roster I don’t deem as ‘prospects’. And to just use Dawes as an example….he’s not a top-tier.
Overall sather did sh-t. He got rid of a lousy hossa and a bad draft pick in montoya. If Sjorstrom shows anything he will be better than hossa, the goalie is a Benoit project. I did like getting Geatton and I think they should play them both and drop Hollywood. It seems we just got a younger malick how wonderful is that two big dman who are wusses. Bravo glenn you are showing just how great you are. No wonder you are a legend in your own mind!!!!!!! Bad move sending Gratton to Hartford. We play the cryers on sun and they now have 2 fighters since bowlofshit just came back from his suspension. No wonder i hate sather!!!!!!!!!!!
Why does it matter if we aquire a Sjostrom to perhapse play in the top 12 instead of a Moore or other AHLer? The only thing that matters is that we didn’t give UP a Moore to get a Sjostrom. As long as you have both, they compete and we win. Saying you want Moore to play instead of Sjostrom, when both are in the organization, is playing coach instead of GM.
The Swede is less than a year older, and has played in 261 NHL games. Moore has less then 10.
Hossa, by the way, is two years older than Sjostrom, and has played in 223 NHL games. Sjostrom is an RFA who may succeed in the Ranger’s system of play, Hossa is an RFA who may succeed in the Scavenger’s system of play.
Spiderpig – You don’t see Orr do too much wrong becasue too often he is way out of the play becasue of his lack of speed..Add on how he often overstays his shifts because he is too slow and immobile to get to the bench…And that’s a bunch of Bull about Hollweg hitting late and taking stupid peanlties on the forecheck…He’s the best forechecker on the 4th line and is constantly passsing up attempts to hit so that he can reamin in the right postion..
And Hollweg being in the right position almost all the time is a big reason why the line works defensively…it has NOTHING to do with Orr….And even if I don’t think Orr adds much, I still keep the line together becasue as a UNIT it has been doing a GREAT job defensively…
does that clarify where I was going?
I think it depends on the definition of ‘prospect’. Which is why I chose the word ‘youth’.
Prucha, Dawes, Cally, Moore, toots, girardi, none are top-tier. The only way I could even think to refer to Dubi as ‘top-tier’ is that he was selected to play in the young stars game. Staal as well, of course. But we know that the process with dmen is a bit different. And MUCH harder to define.
‘Top-tier’ youth will receive Calder Trophy nominations. IMO.
Freddie Sjorstrom was very well liked in Phoenix.
Hope he can produce & put the puck in the net.
LET’S Go SWEDES !!!
What does the Ranger’s organizational Defensive Depth Chart look like now?
Micheal Rozsival is clearly #1.
“Saying you want Moore to play instead of Sjostrom, when both are in the organization, is playing coach instead of GM.”
Not when Slats is the GM. And Shoney is the Asst. They make the decisions. The coach can make a suggestion, and adjust the lines when the GM/Asst GM make the decision to add/remove players.
I dont get why people think that we needed to make a huge deal yesterday. People complain when we went out and got high priced players and trade the young talent we had. Well this year we kept the young talent and signed some role guys that we needed. Plus Sjostrom can turn into more than that in the near future I think if we can help develop his offensive game, something we never really accomplished well with Marcel. Backman is another guy that is pretty good, despite what Blues fans say. Hes more of an offensive guy, which is not something we necessarily need, but I can see him doing fine in NY if he stays healthy.
The team is playing pretty well lately, although they need to prove it against top competition. I think they will because unlike earlier in the year where they were shooting too much and from crappy angles, they are being patient and crashing the net getting shots from the slot. When you do that you win games.
And btw, I have to laugh when people say that the team is NOW shooting the puck yet forget the fact that we were way up there in the league in shots and had the worst shooting percentage. Its not the quantity, but that quality of the shots that has changed the Rangers game around. They need to keep it up though in order to be taken seriously in the playoffs.
Come on gang I swear you wouldn’t be happy with Sather no mater what he did. And we have no idea how it is going to pan out for awhile yet. Give Sather a break I think he did ok for what he gave up and for what is out there and what we got.
Sjostrom has 10 goals this year, meanwhile Marcel tried-on-the-1st-line-but-he’s-a-bust Blowssa has ONE. Sjostrom is definitely an upgrade on the fourth line over Hollweg or Hossa, but nothing wrong with trying him on the PP with some of the top guys!
“You don’t see Orr do too much wrong becasue too often he is way out of the play becasue of his lack of speed..Add on how he often overstays his shifts because he is too slow and immobile to get to the bench…And that’s a bunch of Bull about Hollweg hitting late and taking stupid peanlties on the forecheck…He’s the best forechecker on the 4th line and is constantly passsing up attempts to hit so that he can reamin in the right postion..

You sure you watching the same Ryan Hollweg? Orr’s job is to be the top man on the 1-2-2 forecheck. Thats why you might think hes not back in the play. The only reason why that line works defensively is Betts. Hollweg is not in the right position, actually gets caught out of position a lot because he goes out of his way to throw checks that he probably shouldn’t. Orr hits pretty hard, not like Hollweg though, but knows when to throw a check and when not to. Overall Hollweg does more bad than good because he takes himself out of the play and usually takes an awful penalty at times that we don’t need them.
And I didn’t know a combined -30 is doing a great job defensively.
I hope our 4th line stays intact. For those of you who call for Sjostrom to take Orr’s place – you will be the ones whining about teams toughness once Carolina will all over Rangers physically. Hollweg and Orr should be in the line up every night!
Vincea…........relax there toe blake…......last time I checked, Hartford was an hour and half up the road….and flyers game is sunday???? which according to my math means gratton can be called early on sunday and make it to ny for the pregame skate????? What did Glen steal your cookies in high school or something??? Relax
“Blowssa” LOL. Where was that for the last 3 years dude!?!?
hockeyman2 – The ‘slats bashing’ isn’t about the moves yesterday. It’s about his 8 years of not being able to properly negotiate trades. Or draft players. IMO, yesterday was one of his better deadlines.
this team has enough toughness to withstand Carolina without Orr or Hollweg in the lineup.
...because he DIDN’T do anything stupid.
Sjostrom has 10 goals this year and the most in his breif NHL career. LAst year he had I think 9 and the year before 7.
So he is obviously rising in the offensive production
I agree with a few posts above, being in NYC and the swede connection could give him a boost for some more goals.
I liek the trade, and hope he stays a Ranger next year. We will have to see how he plays tomorrow, as well as Backman, but I dont think Backman will be playing alot once Mara and Orr come back full time.
I think the question those who are complaining about yesterday’s deals should ask is this: which player who was traded yesterday do you think the Rangers should have gone after? Then you should ask: was the price worth it? I don’t think any of them were. Not as rentals.
Beer me, just meant that comment in general, not directed specifically at you.
ok, wasn’t sure.
No way am I reading all of these posts that I’ve missed. In scrolling down it looked like the discussion is what to do with Sjostrom? Answer: plug him in Hollweg’s spot.
Sjostrom is 6’1” 217, Hollweg 5’11” 210. Let Sjostrom show if he can hit and provide energy, because we already know he has Hollweg beat in the skill category. If he can do what Hollweg does about half as good, send Hollweg packing, as he’ll be COMPLETELY useless.
Prucha is a little bit trickier to work in. I think best choise is to send him on a 2 week trip to Hartford. If someone gets injured or things start to fall apart, work him back in. Otherwise, don’t mess with the chemistry.
zg, that defense chart is terrible. How you could possibly have Staal 5th is beyond me.
The team probably sees it as:
Rozsi, Staal, Tyutin, Girardi, Mara, Backman/Malik, Strudwick.
I think they like Malik better but he’s definitely gone at season’s end, so they’ll give Backman the 6 spot.
As for how I view them, switch Tyutin and Girardi.
doodie – you should have read them all. We were discussing that we think you’re a cool dude. sorry you missed it.
To look away from the trades…. Carolina has won 3 in a row and are 7-2-1 in their last 10. A bit hot if you ask me. Tough one tomorrow.
Hollweg is bad. And, as an intimidator, he’s a joke.
Carolina is all of a sudden pretty tough. They have Brookbank and that kid Conroy in the lineup along with Rutuu who is every bit the cheapshotting dirtbag as his brother. Walker is a nice middleweight. If Orr is healthy you almost have to have him in the lineup against them. Dubi right now is a punching bag and Avery is a lightheavyweight who rarely fights.
You are right, I was wrong.
The actual order according to time on ice is:
Now, Rozsival’s minutes are at an elite level, like it or not. And saying that Staal is our #2 defenseman is just silly. He will be (or #1) but is not now and probably shouldn’t be.
Now, Backman clocks in at 19.37 minutes per game. Right off the bat that puts him fourth. What it also does is give the Rangers six defensemen who have played over 18 minutes a game this season, the true number is probably closer to 7 because Mara’s ice time was decreased when playing with Strudwick.
Anyone doubt that the Rangers needed a defensive replacement for Jason Strudwick before getting to the playoffs?
I think we established Orr has to be in the lineup just to protect the players. Hollweg on the other hand does not.
“You sure you watching the same Ryan Hollweg? Orr’s job is to be the top man on the 1-2-2 forecheck. Thats why you might think hes not back in the play. Are you sure you are watching at all.??..Hollweg is always in the right postion in the defesnive zone while Orr usually has his head up his ass…And DOn’t give me this crap about Hollweg going out of his way to throw checks and taking himself out of position…Last year, yes, not this year.It just hasn’t been happening….He’s becvome a very good positional defensive player..
“I think we established Orr has to be in the lineup just to protect the players. Hollweg on the other hand does not.”
You mean the Orr ass-kissers have decided that
Orr does very little protection or preventiuon…But he does fight other good…Big Freakin Whoop…
And Thank God Renney doesn’t think like some of the clueless people on here..Yeah, send a guy packing who bleeds Ranger blue, give 110% every night, is top 10 in the league in hits (for Forwards), is a good forechecker, is a good skater and ahs been playing very good defense this year as par of a line that often does a great job shutting down top lines… Not to mention a big part of the overall team chemistry…Yeah, just get rid of him…
Both defenseman Christian Backman (who skated with Marc Staal) and forward Fred Sjostrom (who skated with Betts and Hollweg) appear to be playing tomorrow night against the Hurricanes.
Ah, number 20. My Steve Rucchin jersey lives again!
