Byers called up

February
5

Dane Byers is on the ice at the morning skate to take Ryan Hollweg’s place at left wing tonight.

This presumably means Brendan Shanahan, Marcel Hossa, and Marek Malik are all still out tonight.

I’ll confirm in a bit…

Sam – I love your coverage dude, really. But your fantasy co-owner reported that about 13 hours ago. Maybe if you didn’t have chicken nuggets on the brain you woulda seen that! ;)

salty r u retarded? Drury is exactly on par for what he is: a 55 point player. Trade him, aint gonna happen, he’s here long term. ANd why do you and everyone else expect that because he puts on our blue sweater he’s going to be a huge goal scorer. He’s here to kill penalties, make plays and be MR. CLUTCH, which he is. Nough Said
    ....

yeah, I actually am retarded, watch your step. Also, thanks for pointing out those intricate details about Drury, we haven’t heard that aspect of it yet… do me a favor mugsy and reread my post (re: you’re not the only one who figured out that Drury signed for 5 years , wow, thank you for pointing out that latent detail), and pay attention to the games when theyre on, and recognize that Drury is only now starting to pick up his game. He’s been bad this year, in all three zones, and his goals/points total this year paint a generous picture of what he’s actually done here. That said, he has absolutely kicked into some next gearshift/phase now that things are actually getting tight, and he’s playing like the $5M player he is, and maybe if things pick up he’ll actually earn his full $7M in the remainder of the season… excuse me for not being a starry eyed fanboy and actually criticizing a multimillionaire athlete and expecting him to not be an ineffective loaf for the first 40someodd games of the year

How many of you are elated over this callup? I only hope this kid doesn’t disappoint tonight. I’m hoping for a Gordie Howe hatrick.

  4. Hospo

he deserves the cup of coffee..Let him play a game and send his ass back down for 15-20 mins a night in Hartford..No reason to break up the HBO line…If he provides solid defense and a few hits, I’ll be happy..

  5. Beer Me!

haha – salty, I was sooo waiting for your retort.

Reason to break up the HBO line – The H. Useless.

    BBO line all the way.

  7. Salty Hangdown

No reason to break up the HBO line

    .........

yah there is, Hollweg is a nickle a dozen hockey player. The only thing he’s got going for him is his conditioning. Aside from that, he’s got no discretion, puck talent, or sensibility. If Byers can deliver hits 80% as effectively and contribute in other areas AND stay out of the box (tall order? perhaps) then that is plenty of reason to break up the 4th line.

  8. Ryan

how bout the BOB line or ByOB…

  9. Beer Me!

    I like the ByOB line!!!!

Ya know what stinks about tonights game? Is that even a win doesn’t change our spot in the standings. BUT, it will officially make the Atlantic division the most…competitive. It will put 4 teams 1 point apart.

A case could be made for the southeast, but who the hell cares about being the best of the worst?

  10. True Fans Bleed RW&B

I’m not sure why Hollweg ran out there and board Kostitsyn (?) pretty much knowing he’d get a major and kicked from the game. I’m happy it didn’t adversely affect the team, but I lost respect for HOllweg putting his own vendetta over the team’s success.

Either Hollweg or Orr are expendable—certainly both aren’t necessary. Nevertheless, they still aren’t the reason the Rangers lose (or fall into losing streaks).

  11. Salty Hangdown

Also, Hollwegg has been on the NHL’s wanted list all season. That has completely thrown a wrench into his gears. If he avoids playing his edgy physical game, he is literally useless. If he plays his physical game, not only does he lack 100% integrity in his hitting, but he is also watched like a HAWK because of his reputation. This Catch 22 = lose the Geico rep.

Looking forward to seeing Byers play. Hopefully he can be the to the Rangers down the line what Darren McCarthy was to the Red Wings in the 90’s.

  13. alfHamilton

oh man, we REALLY missed out on cujo. looks like he’s the veteran stalwart we need to back up hank if we’re going to bring home the cup!

    5-0!

thank god some of the geniuses on this blog aren’t tapped for advice by rangers upper management.

MAYBE, but not on the Rangers..If Byers can, hit, skate, forecheck and playe defense at the NHL the way Hollweg has over the past 25 games, then fine..And, oh yeah, lets break up a line that has worked hard every night, shown great chemisty and been on the ice for, what, 3 goals against in the lst 25 games?...yeah, who needs defense when we can play kids just for the sake of playing kids…

  15. GoCaptainClutch!

why is the argument always: Orr or Hollweg—we don’t need both.

When was the last time you saw Hollweg win a fight? We need Orr for that reason. We also need Hollweg for his grit, hitting, and energy. That’s what the 4th line is for.

They’re very different plays, not at all interchangable in my opinion.

Regardless, I’m psyched to see Byers—love watching the kids play!
