Is Valiquette the answer?

111

Once again, the Rangers will be relying on the old standby “Our goalie isn’t exactly an All-Star so hopefully he won’t see any shots” philosophy tonight against the Flyers.

Stephen Valiquette gets the start, and Marek Malik takes Paul Mara’s place for his first game since Handshake-gate. More in a bit…

Wow, it sounds like they are doing everything in their power to ice a lineup that will bring home a W, huh?

Is Renney deliberately trying to get this team to tank? I mean, it’s not like Henrik played yesterday and the day before.

And this would be a bad game to ‘showcase’ Malik for a trade, if showcasing him is even the word to use…

I don’t think Valiquette is that bad, but the Rangers need to be in the position to win tonight. This doesn’t help.

    I don’t get it. I just don’t get it.

  2. Let’s say you HAVE to dress Malik b/c scouts will be in the bldg to see him play, and it comes from Slats that he MUST dress. I think I’d rather have Struds in the lineup vs. a physical philly team than Mara. I like Mara, but given the circumstances, he takes a seat. Think he’ll still shake Tom’s hand?

This artcile is a few days old, but its the comments on the bottom that I’d direct your attention to.

  3. “but the Rangers need to be in the position to win tonight”

comments like this absolutely crack me up

    some more:

    “some dogs are brown”

    “jets are fast”

  4. tuesday’s game started a stretch of 7 games in 12 nights. to think valiquette wasn’t going to play one of those games is pure idiocy.

  5. ROB Z, All the best to you are your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Tonight should be interesting.

  6. malik and valley cat in? i think i’ll skip this one.

we should just lose the next 6 games and get it over with. trade jagr, trade shanny, trade anyone that wont be back next year and then plan for the future. i’m talking fire-sale.

straka, jagr, shanny, any of our d men outside of toots, staal and girardi = get the hell out of town.

this team is nothing but a bunch of under achievers and a joke.

and sam, david vyborny? how the hell is that going to help the team. he couldnt play on a line with rick nash and put up points. how the hell is he going to do so with jagr? bringing in david vyborny is the equivalent to having matt cullen last year. a third line center forced to play on the second line and can’t get the job done. no thanks. i already have enough deja vu from the rangers playing as rotten as they are. i dont need to revisit the matt cullen disaster / experiment.

oh yeah, someone needs to kick tom renney in the ass because he has no ability to motivate this team.

    bring on the hate.

  7. By the way: I’m *officially* turning tonight. It’s actually been since November that I knew this team was going no where, but after tonight, *when* they lose, I will officially have turned for the season and will honestly be cheering for them to lose the rest of thier games. I will finally be able to consistantly enjoy them drowning, and hopefully falling way short of a playoff spot. In a certain pathetic way, it will validify my thoughts and opinions of the team, at the very least making me feel like I’ve known all along that there is nothing there. But more importantly, tanking the rest of the year only puts more pressure on Sather to make some serious changes and go in a different direction of some sort, although I think we are seriously just f*cked for years and years.

  8. Salty, if I was 40 years younger I’d kick your ass.
Why don’t you get on the Long Island Railroad & become a fishsticks fan.
    ASSHOLE !

  9. I agree with Tony, but with less harsh language. No matter how bad, I would never turn on my team. We’ll see tonight what happens though.

  10. It´s always nice to read some of those posts. They are so insightful and pasionate and you guys on here can be very proud to have those kind of statements..

Sam, you can be very proud of a lot of that stuff which is written here….

  11. It’s not easy to accept, but Salty actually has the best interests of the Rangers’ future in mind when he says he wants them to lose. Tony and Agravaine, what good will come if they sneak into the playoffs and in the process acquire more veterans (for young players or picks)? It is never fun to see your team lose, but if the losing serves a purpose it is tolerable.

Bottom line this team needs to ditch Renney, Jagr, Shanny, Malik and I’d say Rosival as well. The sooner the better in my opinion.

  12. Bring back Lohan on

I think Salty was kidding guys, settle down! I mean I was offered tickets to tonights game, 5th row. I passed. Its not worth getting home at 12:30 for those guys. Granted I will go home and watch the game from beginning to end, but I am not about to go 2 hours out of my way for the NYR right now.

  13. Pete, high five for completely “getting it”. Drinks on me next time ; )

I’m not kidding Lowhands! I’m ready to see them self destruct, the worse, the better IMO.

Tony, et al, I won’t be “turning my back” at all. I’ll be watching them circle around in the bowl until I no longer have to, cheering for the future, not for the 2008 version of the Rangers. I’ll be here daily, keeping up with it all. But I’m honestly a little sorry for anyone who is still waiting for that one little tweak that is going to turn this team into what we all expected. Or for them to just “turn it on”. This team is in a constant three way tug o’war, it really should be no surprise that are where they are.

  14. Pete, people said the same thing about the Giants, they don’t stand a chance in the playoffs.
We’re in the Super Bowl baby !
    Hey, you never know !!

  15. If Tom Renney can do as complete an about face as Tom Coughlin then this team does has a chance. But Renney has not yet shown he is willing to change his style. And the Giants don’t have a primadona like Jagr old vets like Shanny who can’t keep up with the game.

tho I would say Sam Madison/McQuarters are comparable to Malik/Mara

  16. I think this is actually a normal coaching decision. We’re starting a tough stretch where we play alot of games in little time. Vally was bound to start at least 1 of them.

  17. if they lose the next 3 this week, then anyone who __doesn’t__ want a firesale is hurting the longterm future of the NYR team.

  18. Bring back Lohan on

Fact is Vali is not good. He is good for at least a three spot against. who feels confident that the NYR will score three tonight

  19. “is valiquette the answer?”

depends on the question. I’ll take backup goalies for $100 Alex

  20. Why not sit Girardi or Tuitin, whose blunders cost the game in Carolina!

I am writing this season off–I really do hope they self-destruct tonight–very likey–that way we can focus on getting rid of the garbage–Jagr mainly

  21. IMO at this point I don’t think it matters who is in net for the rangers…..

I’m really praying that sather doesn’t make a stupid trade and mortgage the future just to try and sneak in to the playoffs. That’s the only thing left that I’m hoping for in this season.
I don’t care what anybody thinks, a fire sale is the way to go
if any ranger fans want a chance to win the cup in the next 5 years.

  22. Yes.

*the Rangers have traded Tom Renney to the Peoria Schmucks for a jockstrap to be named later – ejk*
ejk gets the award for funniest thing I have ever read on this blog, then he comes back strong on this thread!

Pavel – Drury has also recently been playing wih Straka, played with Gomez and Jagr for a couple games, and probably has played on a line with Dawes this season, leaving the only players he hasn’t played with being Dubinsky and the HBO trident.

For now, I’m still with Tony from AZ and Beer Me!, but I don’t want the Rangers to sneak in and lose in the first round. I would have to say I will be happy if they win a round because that’s how I usually feel, but it obviously wouldn’t be much of a success for the team. Salty – there’s still much time to catch the Devils for second place in the conference, starting on Friday, so squeaking is not the only option, but I’m definitely overly-optimistic.

4-3 game tonight. I don’t predict the winner because that’s stupid in hockey without a spread, but if the Rangers win at that score, it will probably have to be in a shootout or the result of a 5 on 3, major penalty, or Gagne and Briere being thrown out of the game.

  23. haha, pig – you’re still keeping track of who’s not giving up? good, and you know i’m not done till the #’s prove so. There’s not only time to catch the devils, but OTT could fall too. They’re missing some guys, and they’re headed in the wrong direction over the last month too.

There’s too many divisional games left, and we all know they mean more than usual with us all being so close in pts. Tonight is a big game. I have frequent doubts about Jagr’s game these days, and this is a huge opportunity to show that he’s capable. We’ll see in a short time.

    OH YEA – ejk…hilarious.

  24. Thank you Richard, appreciate that. I dont know Valiquette maybe fired up to get the Rangers on the winning teack again, We’ll see. Go Rangers!

  25. I notice Avery is back on the second line, with Straka on the first, so I assume Dawes is on the third, which is totally not justified. The *genius hyena* is at it again. Valiquette making some good saves so far, but let’s see how this power play goes. Girardi is trying to give it away again – terrible turnover.

  26. Watching from the Flyers’ viewing area, I appreciate CSN’s use of the behind-the-goal camera during the power play and focusing on a hit while the puck leaves the zone, then still looking at action away from the puck as the puck is not in an area of importance. They do a really good job, and I find the announcers pretty good, too, as I know many of you do not.

Now I can’t tell what the lines are. I think Renney is just picking names out of a hat.

  27. Wow, what a surprise, one of the kids scoring a goal. Do ranger fans still want sather to make a trade for a rental player? GM’s want the rangers kids so watch what you wish for.

  28. tomg – I know nobody here wants them to trade for a rental player if it means giving up a kid (besides Prucha, though I personally would keep him)

  29. I hear you but from what I’ve been reading on different websites that is what gm’s are asking for. Either sather should just go with this team the rest of the way and what ever happens, happens.

  30. well, so far so good but remember the rangers looked good in the first period the other night so lets see if this team can play 60 minutes or will they fall apart?

  31. Wow, so Drury’s line has scored two goals. Now it’s Drury’s turn. I don’t believe I saw him on the power play either. Was he injured or getting equipment fixed before that because Betts was in his place to draw the penalty?

  32. what was nice is the Rangers kind of weathered the Flyers attack for the first 10 min. and then started to come on.
Hopefully they can sustain this effort.
I’m not even going to get excited, its burned me many times so far this season.

  33. spiderpig,
do me a favor and go through the rangers whole lineup, cuz u said drury and he scored right after…maybe we can put up a 20 spot? except for malik i’m sure, so maybe 19…finally playing a decent game and vally looks good!

  34. Just throwing this out there but somebody on this blog mentioned that they read renney went crazy after the carolina game and was screaming at the players and in practice the next
dat. Maybe renney has to to soft on these players.

  35. All I can say is there is one thing the rangers don’t need and that is a back up goalie, Vali has been great tonight. Renney should play him more often.

  36. Are we in black tonight?

    Dawes great game.

I say Vally gets the start tomorrow. Team feels more urgent, smarter playing in front of him.

Would have like to see Orr kick someone’s a$$ tonight, but solid effort all around.

We have a one game winning streak. Woohoo!

  37. Bring back Lohan

“Fact is Vali is not good. He is good for at least a three spot against. who feels confident that the NYR will score three tonight”

I think Vali read your comment. He has been good tonight

    BIG WIN

  38. I think another “the answer to below is yes” post is in order from Sam! Valiquette is hot; any chance he starts again tomorrow? I would guess not based on knowing Renney, but maybe on Sunday. I really hope he gets right back out there tomorrow because of the shutout. He made some great saves during tonight’s game, not just luck.

  39. Interesting way to showcase Malik tonight. Put Stall and Strudwick out together on a defensive pairing, and Malik looks alot less like a trafic cone. . . . .there should be a rule that either Malik sits, or Struds sits. Mara is nothing more than Tom Poti with a really large head, but at least he can skate.

  40. I don’t know about anyone else but jagr was a non factor in tonights game. If I was sather I still would throw out to GM’s that jagr could be available for the right price and see what offers he gets.

  41. I dont get why people want to trade Jagr? I mean it took him a season to click with Nylander when they were in Washington and its about the same with him and Gomez. He was a factor and got chances. Just because he doesn’t score doesn’t mean he didn’t play well. He was in front of the net and crashing there doing the dirty work, something he wasn’t doing a month ago.

And about Vally, if you take out that Phoenix game, which was completely not his fault, hes got a 1.79 GAA, .930 Save %, and is 3-2-1 with a shutout. The guy is a quality backup that probably had the most important start of the year last year against St. Louis and came up huge in that game which pretty much turned out season around. I just love coming on here though and see people swaying from saying certain guys suck, then saying they dont when they have a good game, then they’ll be back to asking to trade them immediately if they dont score a goal or give up one. haha.

  42. Very good 60 minute game tonight, Lets keep it up tomorrow. Thank you all again for your thoughts and prayers. But it was good to see the Rangers suffocating team D again. Relentless pressure, good to see.

  43. Good for Vally. Good teammate, good backup, and first shutout to boot. Terrific all around. And, Sam, as a professional editor and writer myself, I am delighted with how your prose, humor, and insight improve with every post. You work has rapidly become essential to every thinking NYR fan. Well done to the Rangers and well done to you! (See, I don’t just bitch!)

That being said – I am currently chewing on my shoe.

  45. Oldtyme ,Salty and shesends…

ha ha ha you should feel stupid now !

    Rangers win !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Great game !

  46. what happened to malik?? call up callahan….

they dominated tonight, there handling the puck in there own zone was real strong..

    nice win.

  47. I guess everyone was just speechless for a while based on such a strong effort.

It’s weird that I haven’t really noticed Dubinsky’s hitting until this month (well now last month, January), but he leads rookies in hits. He threw about four really solid ones in this game.

I really hope Renney doesn’t change anything for the next game, including the goalie. Let Hank ride pine for a second game in a row for the first time this season. Big whoop.

Dare I say, Malik actually looked good! He kinda pushed someone once and fell in line with the rest of the team being very comfortable and patient with the puck in their own zone. I almost can’t believe how different a team we just saw.

  48. “ha ha ha you should feel stupid now!”

I flipped on the game and it was 4-0 early in the 2nd and all I could do was laugh about it. Of course after my big official “dissent” post. Complete comedy, and yes, some of you absolutely deserve to chide me in the morning. However, I’m not eating my foot or my words by any means.

I *might* feel stupid if the Rangers somehow play the rest of the season like they did tonight. However, I still want them to tank. Bottom line is Jagr’s gotta go, at the very least. As much potential as he has to contribute at any given moment, he commands way to much revolve around him for him to be an overall positive force on the bench.

I’m not a chaunce, and I’m not afraid to admit I’m wrong, *when* I’m wrong. We’ve seen them play well before, and I’ll *admit* that tonight could have been the most convincing game I’ve seen them play this season. But this is not an overall healthy or good team. In order to be a good team for the next several years, big changes do need to be made. We are better off tanking in the long run. Haven’t you guys ever heard of a sacrifice? Not that they should try to tank, but that happening in not necessarily bad. *At all.*

    Good for Drury tonight.
    Good for Valli.
Nice give and go tween Shanny/Aves, those guys speak the same language, they need to stay together.
    Dubinsky is awesome.

  49. This is not abig deal, but did anyone see the flyer on the bench hold onto drurys arm on the Prucha goal ???

  50. OldTymeHockey14 on

I on the otherhand can be humble and eat my shoe.

Great job last night. The Flyers weren’t great, but they didn’t suck either. Very few mistakes, and they covered most of them.

  51. Great win, great performance, great effort, great line combos. Credit due for preparing the team, getting them focused, creating the right line combos, playing your backup appropriately (thanks coach, go ahead guys you can admit it ONCE). Good to see certain players pick up some goals. Looks like breaking up the DDP line worked, huh?

I’m going to try real hard not to hit my head on the ceiling after that game, b/c we just made tonights game even more important. A win tonight would put us 3 points out of the div lead. And headed in the right direction. Jersey’s lost 2 in a row.

Hank has to play tonight, THAT is the pressure that he needs. If watching your backup shut out one of the best offenses in the league doesn’t motivate you…you need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

Salty – It’s so hard not to talk trash right now, believe me. But I’m saving it for when we’re in 1st next weekend. ;)

    LET’S GO RANGERS!!!

  52. Ovechkin with 4 goals last night. Any short of the Heart Trophy is a disrespect. That guy is nasty(no, not you nasty). I’d almost like to see them make the playoffs to ensure the right person wins.

  53. salty, the problem with your ‘i want them to tank’ theory is that we’re too close to the deadline. if this were december you might have an issue, but the team is 5 points out of FIRST PLACE in the atlantic division and only 25 days from the trade deadline. there isn’t going to be a fire sale because we’re probably going to be very much in it come february 25.

  54. As a die hard ranger fan it was sweet to see the rangers shutout and beat the flyers because I can’t stand the flyers or there fan base. I would think by now that fellow ranger fans would have learned not to get to giddy over a win because we have seen this before where they look like a team that we thought they would be and than they play a bunch of stinkers in a row. Can we see this team play like this consistently before we all get GAH GAH!!!!

  55. “This is not abig deal, but did anyone see the flyer on the bench hold onto drurys arm on the Prucha goal ???”

Someone on the Flyers bench grabbed Drury’s glove. The ref’s should watch out for that kind of stuff.

  56. One question for anyone. Other than NHL.com, Where can I find Ranger highlights on the web? NHL.com’s video portal doesn’t work on my comp, and not all highlights can be found on youtube.

Speaking of youtube, check out this clip of Drury getting his glove taken by a player on the Flyers bench. What a turd.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S68rhvrt5V4

The Rangers will have to decide if they want to make a push this season. I clearly do not think they are good enough to make a serious run at the Cup. Watching Alex Ovetchkin score 4 goals last night, watching Crosby and Malkin and watching Spezza and Heatley makes me wonder who our comparison’s are. I mean we don’t have a 20 goal scorer. So as optimistic as I tend to be, I am somewhat inclined to this team being sellers at the deadline in order for us to get younger and look towards the future.

  57. That was bush league but coming from the Flyers it doesn’t surprise me. The Flyers have no class just like there fans!!!!!!

  58. I saw the Flyer grab Drury’s glove. How about the call on Shanny in the 1st. The way games are called is disturbing. Rangers played great tonight, long way to go.

  59. if they wanna prove they can make a run at the playoffs today and sundays game has to be exactly like last night…. they beat the devils 4 times this season there is no reason for anything but a solid WIN tonight. im sick of this shit where they play like a team and then just collapse the next game. TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT FOR THEM TO PROVE THEY CAN MAKE A GOOD RUN.

  60. vogs – thanks for that link. Flyers are trash. Please refer to that city a PHILTHADELPHIA only.

joejoe – I don’t think you’ll find too many people to disagree with you on that. This is HUGE tonight. You’d think a 4-0 win over a 1st place team would be a statement game. But in our position, THIS game tonight is now bigger.

  61. salty, the problem with your ‘i want them to tank’ theory is that we’re too close to the deadline. if this were december you might have an issue, but the team is 5 points out of FIRST PLACE in the atlantic division and only 25 days from the trade deadline. there isn’t going to be a fire sale because we’re probably going to be very much in it come february 25.
    ………

This is *exactly* my point, Tim. Getting excited about “5 points of out first place” is polishing a turd and everyone here should at least recognize that it is a refelction of the division, not the Rangers. They very well may nipple themselves into the playoffs, but I’m beggiing they don’t. Actually, I mean I’ll be excited if they play well and look good going in, but I know deep down that it is not good for next year. Playoffs will once again paint this picture that everything is okay with the team. It’s not. I’m sorry if I come off as a jerk, I’m seething about this season though. I stand by my convictions, and I want to see a much different team next year.

So, do the Rangers need to be in a position to win tonight? Just curious ; )

  62. salty – know what? I admire your commitment. I wish you were on the other side of that 1/2 full (1/2 empty) glass though.

Like the div for example. Before the season started and through to current day you’ll find quite a few, possibly the majority say that it’s the toughest division in the league. The parity is either due to everyone being good or everyone being bad. Lots of people say ‘I wish we could be like the devils’, in other words of couse. But a win tonight puts us 1pt behind, so what’s the difference, ya know? Are they bad?

How have the flyers gone 12-2-1 and only be a few games ahead? I think this division is up for grabs. I think the healthiest team with the most solid goaltending is going to take it. just my opinion.

oh yeah, and to speak to your point of making the playoffs. If (when) we make it in, we’ll have to be one of the hotter teams at the time. Similar to last seasn where we toasted our 1st rnd opponent. And if not for Drury our fate in the 2nd rnd could have been quite different. Sure, a lot depends on what opponent we draw, but the 1st week of April will decide the 2nd week.

  63. If (when) we make it in, we’ll have to be one of the hotter teams at the time.
    …….

Absolutely, and that is what I find to be the “worst” part… it will be really bright paint painting Jagr back into the picture.

So just out of curiosity, where do you place the bulk of the credit for the win last night?

  64. Salty Hangdown,
I agree salty, the problem is though that the eastern conference has allot of parity and each week which ever team goes on a mini run jumps in to a playoff position and because of this the rangers are and will be in the playoff picture. Dolan and sather’s goal is to make the playoffs so sather will not trade the vets to build for the future. At this point the only thing I pray for is that sather doesn’t go back to his old way and think he can trade the future of this organization
for a rental player to make a run at the cup because that would be a major mistake. At this point I would be happy if Sather would just ride out the team for the rest of the season and whatever happens, happens.

  65. and in regards to the division, I’m sorry I do think its a relatively weak division…you can make a long case either way, and I understand yours…

but tightest division does not = best

(tightest ****** does = best though)

  66. It wasn’t jagr that’s for sure. Dawes, prucha and dubinsky played well for starts. The defense played much better in there own zone. It was for the most part a team effort.

  67. tomg I know…

I’m saying if we lose every game for the rest of the year much better chance of having a different coach, and a different captain here next year.

  68. I hereby change my mind on something.
    The Forsberg situation.

I think someone here may have mentioned it, but I know I read it in an article today for sure too.

If brought in, and utilized in a particular way, I think it could be a good idea. If Drury moved to the wing on the 2nd line, with Foppa in the middle and Dubi went back to the 3rd unit. The wingers I’m not sure of, and you can never tell these days with our combos anyway.

Then, on the PP you’d have Foppa & Jagr. At that point, I don’t think you can really design any type of PP, just let’em play!

The best part about the aquistion is that it costs you nothing. Only problem would be if he wants more than just this season on his deal…keep looking.

  69. Believe me, I’m with you, I don’t want to see jagr and his buddies here next year. The past two season they were good for the rangers but now with the future slowly coming up sather needs to go in a different direction and build around drury and gomez IMO.

  70. okay okay okay okay i deserve all the hate i get.

last night was a good game. they played super well and i have to tip my hat to valley cat.
tonight is another “must win” game. This time, unfortunately, I will have to miss it due to traveling.

  71. Beer Me,
I agree, that would be the only thing i would do if I was sather because your not giving up anything. The only problem is I don’t think Forsberg would play for the rangers. From things I have read Forsberg seems to have a relationship with the flyers. I think Henrik needs to get on the phone and talk to his fellow countrymen.

  72. salty – “but tightest division does not = best”
I guess it’s a matter of perception and definition of ‘best’. At this point, speaking to the standings alone, I’d say its a toss up of the Northwest and the Atlantic. All 6 div’s have 1 ‘clunker’ that is simply overachieving.

Bulk of the credit? On the effort, and the legs being there. Honestly, without being in that lockerroom, or at practices, it’s hard to point to an individual or know who was responsible for it. I would point to the leadership and preperation. Wherever, or from whomever it came from. Though I’m sure it was by committee.

And certainly not ‘bulk’ by any means, but Vally was the right call last night. Though skeptical at first, 50/50 hindsight proves it to be correct.

  73. It seems to have worked.

I was thinking the same thing mid way through Period 1. Are the Rangers playing tighter defense skating hard to the puck in their own zone, and being more aggressive towards the net in the oppositions zone because they feel like they can’t rely on Valiquette? I don’t want the answer to be “Yes”, but it sure felt this way.

Granted, Steve did make a few graceful saves where the defense did slip up a bit. And the team wasn’t perfect. There were a few turnovers and mis cues, but they skated better, with a unified goal, and made us eat a few of our words.

I was impressed. Or, rather, I was happy to see the players before to how we’d been expecting them to play all season long.

I have been a Ranger fan for over 30 years and bleed Ranger blue but I have to agree with you that if we squeek into the playoffs with another rental player and the euro posse everyone will think alls’ well.
I’m looking at my photo of my kids and me at the Hockey Hall of Fame standing by the Stanley Cup, my photo of Adam Graves and me shaking hands at Rye Playland in ’94 (he had a lot of hair then), my Stanley Cup banner hanging on the wall, etc. etc. What’s the point? The point is rember the quote from “Miracle”…I’m not looking for the BEST players, Craig, I’m looking for the RIGHT ones. That’s what the Rangers should be doing now!!!!!!!

  75. Salty

    It is spelled *****

At least we are having a meaningful game versus the team that now plays in Newark tonight. That is something.

  76. Well sure, I’d pat him on the back. But I wouldn’t give him 100% of the credit. Just like I’d never blame him 100%. When the players step on the ice, they have to execute. Putting the right players there is his job. It’s easier to execute when you have the motivation to do so, and you’re prepared to do so. I don’t think you’d find anyone that doesn’t think that was a complete team win.

So we all saw with our own eyes that the combos worked last night. So let’s say the same combos are used tonight, and they don’t produce…then who’s ‘fault’ is it?

  77. This is exactly my point, Tim.

Just curious ; )

first off, the atlantic is a pretty good division. to be an underachieving team 5 points out is a good thing.

and though nobody’s excited about being 5 points out of first, i think its pure idiocy to go into tank mode now. i mean, when the jets were 2-8, it was legitimate for me to want them to tank because a.) the playoffs were out and b.) i wanted darren mcfadden.

the thing about this season is that YOU DONT KNOW WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN IN APRIL yet. the playoffs are about momentum and the momentum built going in. the real key to nhl postseason prowess is a team’s play in march and april. i say this every year, and in 07 it was especially evident in our case.

  78. So we all saw with our own eyes that the combos worked last night. So let’s say the same combos are used tonight, and they don’t produce…then who’s ‘fault’ is it?

    ……..

Depends on what happens. Does he bother to adjust to the game? Or does he leave them as is?

I make the point because the big news story yesterday was “Renney yelling at the team, etc, etc.”

Then they go out and blow out the top team in the div. Just makes me wonder why Renney didn’t decide to “yell” in December. I thikn the guy finally got desperate and did some real coaching and it showed.

  79. tim – so true. We all know the cliche that the playoffs are another season and yada yada yada. Though true, the last 6 weeks or so prior to that can change A LOT. We’re just about to that point. And with the last 10 games vs. teams that matter, and we know we can contend with (and our record vs them shows), anything is possible.

longtimefan – I like your post about the ‘right’ players. Its a valid point and applies to every sport. But only 1 team out of 30 gets that right each year.

  80. With the Rangers this season, you have to understand one thing…last night wasn’t us…it could be us…but we’ve shown that every once in a while we can play…until playing like we played last night is the norm, it will be the exception

  81. OMG! I don’t know if you meant that the way I read it, but you almost gave him a compliment! haha watch it!

  82. the thing about this season is that YOU DONT KNOW WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN IN APRIL yet. the playoffs are about momentum and the momentum built going in. the real key to nhl postseason prowess is a team’s play in march and april. i say this every year, and in 07 it was especially evident in our case.

    …….

    Tim

I recognize this, beleive me. However, that is a piss poor way to be going about your seasons, dont you think? Hanging on for dear life with the gun to your head everynight in March? Although you do have a very gooid point, there is way more hockey left than I’m making it out to be. I keep glancing over at my schedule and keep getting surprised theres over 2 full months left. It just feels very late very early this year.

  83. Beer Me,
I hate to disagree with you but I hope Forsberg goes elsewhere. We don’t need another injured “washed up superstar”
The guy is one slash away from disability.
I would rather Sather go for another Dman
but thats only my opinion, if it counts for anything

  84. staaly – I’m still kinda torn with the idea to be honest. I hate the idea of the washedup vet thing too. but this team AS IS, is not a cup team. It needs that one spark. Wherever it is. Like I said, the main reason I like it is b/c we don’t have to give anything up. ya know?

  85. salty & tim – sorry to butt in on your conv.

But going 7 seasons with 0 playoffs takes some time to get over. Maybe just visiting the postseason, no matter how you get there, can be an achievement. At least in comparison to a 7-year drought. St. Louis fans had/have a reason to be distraught over crawling in … for 23 consecutive seasons without any success. But in our case, we can only try to build on our prior years success(in the post season).

At least if you get in and don’t get very far, you can identify the reasons. If you don’t make it, you have no idea how the players on your team will react. right? I don’t know.

  86. Renney got a really backhanded compliment from me. Translation = If he shook his reccessive testicle out back into the coinpurse earlier we might not be in this ugly situation.

  87. OldTymeHockey14 on

Signing Forsberg will not put this team in Cup contention.

And Salty – it will not put them in a position to win.

It’s just a dumb idea. This isn’t the Forsberg from his Avalanche days. The Rangers should be done with the era of signing aging veterans and hoping it pans out.

Anyway, before he signed with the Flyers he said he didn’t want to play in NYC, so screw him. I doubt he’s changed his mind. Why does anyone even bother reading Eklund? So they can complain about him? Skip him and his ‘blog’.

  88. “Getting excited about “5 points of out first place” is polishing a turd and everyone here should at least recognize that it is a refelction of the division, not the Rangers.”

Yes and no. Only Ottawa is really out of reach in terms of their point totals, and even they’ve faltered recently. Not to mention the Southeast Division is MUCH weaker than the Atlantic – the Rangers position despite their mediocre play speaks more to the parity of the league than anything else. The fact is, if the Rangers decide to show up every night and play hard and stick to their system they are very difficult to beat. That’s why this team is so frustrating – even though there’s parity, the Rangers pretty clearly have more talent than so many of the other teams. And I also son’t think they need any outside help. Would I be happy for them to give up nothing but cap space for Forsberg and in the process also keep the guy away from Philthy? Yes. But the big key for this team,in my mind, is not whether or not they have the talent or evcen necessarily the system to compete – it’s just whether or not they actually do it. And that last part is why Renney may be let go if they don’t – because it will be seen as his failure to get them to play hard every night.

I agree we DO NOT NEED Forsburg, we have enough trouble trying to get this team to gel already. We still are not gelling yet and have palyed half the season. I have good feeling for us tonight against NJ. We can do it. Go Rangers.

  90. Good for Vally, he looked great.
I was touched by the Uncle “Wheels” thing.
One game does not make a season, but, it’s a start.
2 points is 2 points & we needed it.
GO RANGERS & GO BIG BLUE !!

  91. salty – funny.

peter – good explanation on the parity. I’d like to expand if I may, with a question. How have the Rangers obviously played poorly and remain in contention with teams that are deemed to have played well?

I think that is shows that the Rangers are capable of being a top tier team. And if they catch fire, they could climb the standings in a hurry. IT’S NOT TOO LATE!! LET’S DO IT!!!!!!

    HAHA I’m doin it again…..

    What? “Over”?
    Did you say “over”?
Nothing’s over until we decide it is!
Was it over when the Germans
    bombed Pearl Harbor?
    Hell, no!
    And it ain’t over now.
‘Cause when the going gets tough…
    (Patriotic instrumental music)
the tough get going! Who’s with me?
    Let’s go! Come on! oooooooooo!
    (RIP Jim)

  92. I think it is evident the west is the stronger conference based on the fact we don’t beat any west coast teams, for the most part we beat only atlantic division teams.

Phoenix destroyed us, as did Calgary, Edmonton, Columbus, Dallas and Colorado.

Until we beat these teams, we’ll just be a middle of the road team.

Right now it looks as if the best teams in the east are Ottawa, Boston, Washington and Pittsburgh. I don’t expect Washington to continue and expect Boston to slide, but they have been playing hard all season long and with the right pickup at the deadline have a legit shot at making a run this season.

The Rangers are a small team up front and are slow on defense. At least that’s what I see game in and game out.

  93. At least if you get in and don’t get very far, you can identify the reasons. If you don’t make it, you have no idea how the players on your team will react. right? I don’t know.

    ……..

Prime example of this not working = Picking up Drury/Gomez and thinking that was “the missing pieces” to a cup. I don’t know how to explain it any further, I mean it’s so blatantly obvious in my mind, it pains me to see people either not getting it or in denial of it. You (I) don’t want to get into the playoffs just for the hell of it with a team like this. Suppose we go in, Jagr plays “decent enough” suddenly the move continues to be “how do we make Jagr happy for next year”? “How do we add more pieces to this squad? We COULD HAVE GONE A LITTLE FURTHER IF WE JUST HAD XYZ…” Thats what Gomez and Drury were supposed to be, and we’re now worse and we’re still trying to revolve around Jaromir Jagr.

I’ve nearly lost my mind here. I feel like I’m having a bad psychedelic trip and I’m the only one seeing the uncomfortable truth around me and everyone else is buying into the illusions. More Ranger fans ready to embrace Peter “the cripple” Forsburg…. I mean, that says it all about the state of the union right there. Desperate. Is it friday yet? I need to sleep.

    *I MISS YENNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*

    jk

  94. We don’t need Forsberg, we need a d-man. Someone who’s either going to run the powerplay or someone physical who’s going to try and shutdown the opponents top line.
When this team is on its game there’s no stopping it. Last night we scored 4 very different goals, but all created because we out-hustled the opponents.
Dawes – good pick-off and vision by Drury and excellent deke by Dawes.
Prucha – drove to the net looking for rebound from Girardi’s shot and got his reward
Drury – good puck movement, good screen, good early shot
    Shanny – 2 team-mates in perfect harmony.
If they play like that for the remainder of the season they’ll be tough to beat (even with Malik and the back-up goalie in there!)
