News and insight about the New York Rangers

Gomez an All-Star

January
11

So much for the awkward scenario of Henrik Lundqvist being announced as an All-Star the day after one of the worst games of his career.

Instead, Scott Gomez, who leads the Rangers with 40 points, will represent the Rangers in Atlanta later this month.

In other news, Martin Straka is on the ice wearing a teal no-contact jersey. We’ll know more about his availability later…

It is sad to see Dipi get the nod over Hank. Oh well.

  2. Rob L.

Jagr plays like he has a no contact jersey on all the time.

  3. Nasty 1

Ha, yes he does. Even when he is sticking up for a teammate it looks like he is just kind of there pretending to stick up for a teammate.

  4. stuart

the bottom line is Henrik has played bad for weeks.. Not 2 weeks but about 6 weeks that is not GOOD..

Now all the negative nancy’s come out.. No one is playing well but the goalie is key; Tyutin has made too many mistakes in the d zone, avery cannot hit the net, Jagr obviously needs to score more, and on and on… Mara is good for 1 lazy bad penalty almost every game, Dubinsky has alot of potential but has to improve his hockey IQ on when to pass or shoot, Hossa and callahan cannot hit the side of a barn etc.

right now this team is terrible and need to trade Malik(if you do not play him trade him for anything) and need to collectivley pick it up a ton…....

Shanahan last yr. no playoffs would be a utter disaster….

  5. Cliff

Congrats to Gomez. He’s been our best player for the last 2 months. Henriq did not deserve to go. Jagr does deserve to go – TRADE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Beer Me!

The all-star representation of the Rangers is correct. It is dissapointing to see DP go though.

stuart – to add to avery not hitting the net. If you had 2 bum hands/wrists, you’d miss to. If we re-sign him…1 yr. Hank…3yrs. IMO.

  7. tim

if every team didn’t have to have an all-star, we probably wouldn’t have any.

  8. Rob L.

you’re right Tim. They are other players more deserving than Gomez. DP wouldn’t be their either.

  9. Elliot

My guess is that the Rangers asked for Henrik not to be included in the all star game on compassionate grounds so that he could travel over to Sweden and visit his dad.

  10. Staal Wart

Gomez is the only one who deserves to go.
If JJ and Hank and others had gone…I’d protest.

  11. Staal Wart

If the Rangers asked for Henrik to not be included so he could visit with his day, I think that is a good move. Something is not right with Hank and he needs some down-time. I’d say give him leave for 2-3 weeks if thats even possible, bring up Montoya lets see what he’s got. At this point Hank isn’t helping the team anyway so some time away might be good.

This is not meant to be a knock on Henrik… I love ‘em but he’s struggling right now and clearly is not in the right frame of mind to deal with a struggling team that consistently hangs him out to dry.

  12. tim

nhlnumbers says we have 2.2m of cap space…is that accurate? because if so, montoya should be up and valiquette should go down as soon as possible.

  13. Beer Me!

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Toronto Maple Leafs claimed centre Dominic Moore off waivers from the Minnesota Wild on Friday.

  14. RobZ

Aside from 1 month, Gomer has been the best Ranger, I think He is well deserving. Congratulations to him.

  15. carli

montoya needs to be recalled and given a couple of legit starts, if just to motivate lundqvist.

  16. Mike D!!!

I am so tired of all these guys who post on here bitching and whining! Trade Jagr! Fire Renney! All this crap! Clearly none of you idiots who post this crap actually understand that teams go up and down during the course of a season. Stop trying to achieve short-term results without considering that the long-term is what’s important here.

We need to keep Jagr as long as we can. Same for Avery, same for Shanny, same for Tyutin, same for Renney, same for Lunqvist, same for Straka.

We also need to keep our young core of players, which is what our srong suit is and will be for years to come. That means not trading Nigel Dawes, Callahan, Dubinsky and Prucha.

To appease the masses, fine, trade Malik, but for the love of God, please stop booing him on home ice whenever he touches the puck. It makes us look like ignorant and dumb hockey fans.

Let’s stop criticizing, expecting too much and being bitchy. We have a great squad and will have a great squad for years to come. In fact, we have a whole half of a season left.

Stop being so damn gloomy goddamit! LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!

  17. Jeff

Gomez should decline and the team should do pukes every second of the days during the All-Star break.

  18. Nasty 1

Cheers to that! See you at the Blarney Stone. First rounds on me.

  19. New Newman

Gomez should do fine in the All-Star game because there is no contact. That is how he has been playing in all zones for us this year.

  20. Andrew

Hank didn’t deserve the nod. Instead he should go home to Sweden for a few days to see his Dad and get by this problem without any further issue. I can’t understand the fans killing Henrik over this. Haven’t they ever had anyone in their family be sick? Hank needs some family time and then he can refocus on the tasks at hand here in New York.

  21. Ruttster

We know Jagr will never be traded but…...............Washington is paying a good portion of his salary. Jagr-nylander-Ovechkin would be a hell of a draw for them. .hmmmm, can we sell it, probably not but it was fun to say.

  22. Karimack

I agree with Andrew, Henrik should go home and see his dad. All of us, no matter what our jobs, have let personal problems get in the way of job performance. Unfortunately for Henrik, he has to do it in front of 18,200 fans at the Garden! I think we should cut the guy some slack, he’ll snap out of it.

What if your team is mostly down. Is it OK then?
Other than one good streak, when has this team been up?
I know a few teams with one “down” streak but lots of “up” streaks with line-ups that can’t hold a candle to this Rangers line-up.
Face it this year JJ is not a leader his play has been terrible at least for the most part. Do you realize that Jagr (our leader) is on pace for about 24 goals?

I understand this is the team we have but somebody has to step up to the plate, cause if this continues the team and player bashing is only gonna get worse!

  24. Rucchin20

Henrik probably opted out so he could go to Sweden. Tim Thomas deserves to be in there, though.

Rosy should be in there instead of Kaberle, and Sundin instead of Gomez, and the Leafs and Rangers would still have 1 player each.

  25. Billy L

The only reason Gomez is even there is all the Devil fans that voted for him.

  26. LI Joe

tim – those cap numbers don’t count bonuses like the ones Shanny has already achieved totalling approx $ 3 mm. and since they will count vs either this yr (if room exists for at least some of it) or next yr it would be better for as much of his bonus to hit this yrs cap. especially since this season is going nowhere. no sense being $ 3 mm less for next yrs cap if we don’t have to be especially to fit in a backup goalie.
