Did the Rangers snub the Great One?

34

That’s what “Coyotes broadcaster Darren Pang is suggesting”:http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?blogger_id=100 seeing how the Rangers didn’t do much to acknowledge Wayne Gretzky’s return to the Garden yesterday.

I’ll admit, in hindsight I find it odd that the Rangers didn’t do anything, either, especially when you consider the Garden has been known to rattle off one video tribute after another (Messier! Longtime season ticket holder! Some guy eating nachos!).

But if you’re looking for a conspiracy, the Rangers say there wasn’t one. Their thinking — and there was thinking here — was this:

A) They didn’t know how to offer a tribute to Gretzky and not to Don Maloney.

B) If they gave a tribute to both, they didn’t want to be in a situation where one was inadvertently longer than the other.

and…

C) They thought Gretzky would want the focus to be on his team.

With that in mind, I’ll throw in…

D) The Rangers were getting smoked, so they clearly have bigger things to worry about than putting the right highlights to the right Michael Bolton soundtrack.

All kidding aside, the Rangers pointed out that they gave the Coyotes a suite for the game, and they gave a plug for Gretzky’s new wine label on TV.

It’s not Michael Bolton, but it’s something….

  1. Right now this season is becoming a horror. Even though we will still most likely make the playoffs, its still a horrific season. Last year we needed centermen for Jags and Shanny, now this season we need scoring. Every year we need something else. But if Jagr continues to not put up points, then seriously, this should be his last year, at least in NY.

Ive been a Jags fan my whole life. I hate saying this, and i went crazy when NYR brought him over, and thought it was the best move. But he isnt bringing his game, and if he’s playing good, he’s not putting up points like we expect him too.

I will never say bringing Drury, and Gomez in was the wrong move. It was the right one, for the future. But maybe trading Jags for another goal scorer, or dumping him at the end of the year to sign a goal scorer might be the best move. Im not the kind of fan who boo’s players because of the way they play, the reason i dont like Malik is for his whiny comments in the paper, but thats a story for another time, but like i said, i really really hate saying this about Jagr.

All of you will probably burn the hell out of me for saying this, but if Jags doesnt end the season well, or the playoffs well, and if Sather has any shot at getting Hossa, then id make the switch. Although there’s no way that would happen, cause Hoss will stay with ATL. Anyway enough about that.

If anything, the good thing to come out of yesterdays game is, Jovo probably got freaked out by the way they played, and probably decided right there that he wouldnt waive his NTC for them.

Also the Isles gave Simon “Time away from the team” for counceling or some crap, does this mean he’s not getting suspended??

  2. I lost all respect for Darren Pang when he let in that overtime goal against the devils that knocked us out of a playoff spot on the last day on the season back in 1988.

  3. I find this kerfuffle rather bizarre. Gretzky was given a tribute at MSG when he retired; now he’s just another opposition coach. I don’t recall any tributes to long-time, Hall-of-Fame Ranger Brad Park when he came in as coach of the Wings. Do they throw roses at Gretzky’s feet every time the Coyotes play in Los Angeles?
I certainly saw enough of him on TV last night to admire the skillful dye job he’s clearly had done. I guess the Great One has become the Gray One.

  4. Dubinsky may not be on fire but he looks more like a 1st liner than Jagr does when he moves with the puck. He’s also not afraid to play bang around hockey while Jagr can’t even make contact without losing teeth.

  5. I certainly saw enough of him on TV last night to admire the skillful dye job he’s clearly had done. I guess the Great One has become the Gray One.

you know somethings up when someones hair goes from a lifetime of blonde to light brown at 45yrs old.

  6. I agree NYCEditor. It’s so stupid, tit for tat. Screw the tributes. I don’t want to celebrate anyone’s career right now. I want my team to get on track and start playing like a professional hockey team and not a bunch of pee-wees

  7. The Rangers made a HUGE deal out of Gretzky’s last game. Why should they feel obliged to do anything else? Messier, Leetch, Richter… they won a Cup for the Rangers. Gretzky had one good playoff series one year. He’s the greatest hockey player ever, but he’s way down the list of greatest Rangers ever.

Pang should shut his mouth and go back to wallowing in obscurity in Phoenix along with that entire organization. From what I understand, the Coyotes only have a portion of their games shown on TV in Arizona. Maybe Pang and his groups should pay respect to THEIR OWN team before criticizing other teams.

Garbage goaltender, garbage ESPN analyst, garbage Coyotes analyst.

  8. by the way can’t we keep talking about options for captains, lines (puke), and other stuff. as far as I’m concerned this is a non-issue once again blow out of proportion by a rabid media man looking to get noticed.

  9. Rangers gave Gretz the best tribute he could hope for—an easy victory over a lame-ass bunch of floating pansies.

  10. Do you guys really think that the Rangers are go after a big name goal scorer. Don’t we have a Wolfpacker that could be brought up. Why get a Hossa etc.
    We already have a Hossa

  11. Panger should be more worried about the Yotes not showing the game back in Phoeniz and also should be hammered for writing for the Fraud Eklund!

  12. Doodie Machetto on

“and they gave a plug for Gretzky’s new wine label on TV.”

Too bad you can’t legally order wine to a New York address.

  13. “Gomez Alternate
    Drury Alternate”

wtf is wrong with you? seriously, do you watch these games? Gomez still looks star struck around Jagr and Shanny and Drury is NOT A CAPTAIN. NOT EVEN AN ALTERNATE/ASSISTANT YET. HE WON A SINGLE CUP BEHIND SAKIC/FORSBERG/ROY & CO. HE’S DONE NOTHING SINCE AND EVEN LESS IN NY.

  14. DM – Are you sure about that? My mom gave my dad a monthly two-wine mailing service thingy for his birthday, and whether it’s delivered to an office or home, it’s in NYC.

  15. your boy malik on

Who cares if Gretz dyes his hair or gained a few pounds…he is the greatest. Let’s get the Rangers going and root for them – not boo them…

  16. your boy malik on

See you tomorrow Sam, with the Rangers’ good luck charm…..probably be leaving early…..

  17. The organization owes Gretzky no more than he received already, which is a ton. I don’t remember the 4 cups he won in Manhattan.

And Rob L., dead on. I listened to that on the radio and I’m still pissed at Lil’ Panger.

  18. Honestly who cares that the Rangers did not honor Gretzky upon his return? What did he do in a Rangers uniform that was so fantastic? The Rangers made the playoffs once in his time here and that’s because Messier was on the 96-97 team. Sure he may be the greatest player of all-time but let’s leave the honors at MSG for the greatest Rangers of all-time and that means Messier, Leetch, Richter, etc, etc. I’m glad the Rangers didn’t do anything, it would cheapen what they have planned for a true Rangers hero like Brian Leetch.

  19. Screw Gretzky. Who really cares that he played for NYR for a short period of time in which the team won nothing.
Management needs to spend time on righting this sinking ship, not putting together a tribute for someone who has had more that his share of accolades here and in every other NHL city many times over.

  20. Pang’s just starting drama to try and get some more interest in a team that unfortunately has little interest regardless of whether they’re in Winnipeg or Phoenix. Nostalgia is a funny thing because the Jets were never really that good back in the day. I wish them luck and all, but this is overblown.

the problem with cally is that he got hurt this year and is trying to get his game back.

cally should be playing on a line with shanny, many here should remember how well they palyed together.

on a side note, many will also recall that cally played well with prucha and cullen last year as well.
clueless tom renney couldn’t figure out how to use cullen so he was dealt. Now he can’t figure out how to use drury and gomez accept this time he has run out of excuses and i have a hunch that sather is not at all happy that the team is basically a .500 hockey team almost half a season into the 2007-08 campiagn.

It would be nice to see montoya get a game in but in all fairness to vally he should be the one playing again based not on the last game but on the previous games that he played.

I think th e tinm has come to bench one of my favorite players, oeter prucha.Renney has completed destroyed the kids confidence and now every time he has the puck he becomes a nervous wreck out there. It is starting to hurt the team.

Let me be the first to start a lobbying effort on blueshirt bulletin to get Pat Burns to replace the clueless hyeena himself,he the one who does not take any responsibility for his inept coaching.

And lastly, can someone here explain to me what exactly is the rangers system and or team concept when all you here from Jagr is how he has to have someone on his line who plays his style or his way,I thought this was a team! And Renney’s style seems to be relying on the king to make saves on 98% of the shots against and clean up all the many mistakes made by the defense and hope that the team scores one or two goals and pulls out a win.Or he plays for the shootout because he has the best shootout goalie in the game.Problem is that there is no shootout in the playoffs.Renney needs to go!!!!!!!!!

  23. I saw Mike Pelino last night at the rink up in Katonah. I had gone to his camps for a few summers and Mike “dealt” with me on several occasions, so one of the older guys I skate with reintroduced us and Mike soon remembered me. He was coaching his kids team so I made it quick, but I did tell him “CMON GET YOUR GUYS GOIN!” and he gave me this look of “I can’t believe it anymore than you can”

    Play Monty.

  24. I think as former great Rangers both Don Maloney and Wayne Gretzky should have received more than a plug for Wayne’s wine lable, for nothing more than repect’s sake and the Rangers organization can sashay their way out of it any way they want, but I think it was disrespectful. Wayne Gretzky is the greatest player in hockey and he should be treated as such especially when he walks into a building where he played his heart out for a team that gave him little or no support over the years he played. And he looks just fine!!!! ;)
