That’s what “Coyotes broadcaster Darren Pang is suggesting”:http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?blogger_id=100 seeing how the Rangers didn’t do much to acknowledge Wayne Gretzky’s return to the Garden yesterday.
I’ll admit, in hindsight I find it odd that the Rangers didn’t do anything, either, especially when you consider the Garden has been known to rattle off one video tribute after another (Messier! Longtime season ticket holder! Some guy eating nachos!).
But if you’re looking for a conspiracy, the Rangers say there wasn’t one. Their thinking—and there was thinking here—was this:
A) They didn’t know how to offer a tribute to Gretzky and not to Don Maloney.
B) If they gave a tribute to both, they didn’t want to be in a situation where one was inadvertently longer than the other.
C) They thought Gretzky would want the focus to be on his team.
With that in mind, I’ll throw in…
D) The Rangers were getting smoked, so they clearly have bigger things to worry about than putting the right highlights to the right Michael Bolton soundtrack.
All kidding aside, the Rangers pointed out that they gave the Coyotes a suite for the game, and they gave a plug for Gretzky’s new wine label on TV.
It’s not Michael Bolton, but it’s something….
