Best case/worst case scenarios

The best case scenario with Stephen Valiquette getting his third start in net tonight looks something like this:

The Rangers realize they can’t be lax in front of him, clamp down defensively, and let Valiquette build on two already impressive performances in Toronto and Florida, respectively.

The worst case scenario?

Take a guess. Actually, take a look at the video of the past two games.

If nothing else, the King will be rested for the Debbies…

  1. For Time Warner in NYC it’s TV Guide Channel, #51. Go to nyoverflow.com to check for your local channel; it should be on everywhere that gets MSG.

I was just gonna type what are the chances of getting another 3-2 shootout, but then Drury scored. Great shift by the Gomez line to lead to Hossa’s goal. I like how Billy Jaffe put it when we played the Islanders, having the chronological line of 23, 24, 25 with Drury, Callahan, Prucha, although I don’t think chronological is necessarily the right word.

  2. I don’t even know why Jimmy Kimmel Live would be on TVG. I find it funny that they don’t change the infoboxes, maybe to do it on the sly so the network doesn’t know, but you gotta figure they do. Probably just TWC’s lazyness.

  3. Doodie Machetto on

    cardinally is the right word.

I live in a coop with a TV plan and the plan doesn’t get MSG 2. It’s dish network based, and sucks.

No where on the internet to watch the game for free?

  4. Doodie – Look in the alternate sports channels. At my grandparents’ house, we get DirecTV (becuase Dish sucks; had that before) and MSG2 and FSNNY2 games are on the “sports alternates.” For DirecTV, those are just above all the regular sports channels. I hope you can find it!

  5. Stupid NY Overflow says the game is on channel 60 for Time Warner in NYC and it is not! Missed a whole damn period figuring out it is on 51. Morons!

  6. Doodie Machetto on

SP: I don’t have a Dish network box. Dish network serves the building. Think like college dorm room service, except for adults. It sucks, and is the only thing I hate about my place. Otherwise it’s amazing.

  7. Looks like they mixed up the links to the Devils and Rangers. Although last year I remember the Rangers were on 60 when there was an FSNNY2 game. It’s a total guessing game. I guessed 51 first and was right; I imagine the Devils are on 60 then. I suppose, Doodie, that means you might find the Rangers on 445.

I can’t believe Renney actually went back to what was working and had the big cajones to sit Malik, unlike last year, after sweeping Atlanta and taking Pöck out for Rachunek, and never switching it back.

  8. I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying, DM. How do you actually get to change the channels without a box? I’m not following here.

  9. stupid question, but wouldn’t you think MSG, for the sake of its advertisers, would want potential viewers to actually know what channel the game is on? Call me crazy…

  10. Nobody said Cablevision was run by geniuses. How they got to that point (besides the ones who got there by lineage) is anybody’s guess. If someone knows how the Dolans made enough money to buy these things or create this company, let me know, seriously.

  11. As it happens all too often, it seems the first generation of the family in the business was the smartest, and it has gone downhill with the son. I didn’t realize a Dolan owned the Indians, but he’s first generation, as well, so that explains their success.

  12. I think Staal and Roszival were on the ice way too long there. They were on for two straight shifts, with both Gomez’s and Dubinsky’s lines.

  13. Doodie Machetto on

I spent all day bashing Renney, but I have to give him credit where it’s due. He benched Malik and reunited Rozsi and Staal. That takes some moxy.

  14. True Fans Bleed RW&B on

Will all the Roszival supporters who were writing about Malik being the problem please explain tonight because, from my television, it looked like Roszival was on for every goal against…plus another he gave away and was lucky the referee’s whistled off.

Rozy’s the problem – open your eyes people.

  15. Everyone else just LOSE the MSG2 Feed????? It just went to the default screen it shows when no game is on at 10pm exactly

  16. just another brilliant effort by the rangers tonight. FIRE RENNEY ASAP! This team is playing with their heads up their ***** and have done it way too much this season. Having worthless marcel hossa on the 2nd line deserves his firing RIGHT NOW.

  17. oh and valiquette stinks. That 3rd goal was ridiculously awful. No way should that have gone in. the way this offense has performed all year, you score 3 goals against them, it’s an automatic win.

  18. onecupin67years on

FA signings are really paying off as usual for the Rangers.I think a trade needs to be done for wing mate for Jagr.

  19. callahan is a young guy who shouldn’t be on the first line and starka blows. I’m still mind boggled as to why marcel hossa is on the 2nd line. I could care less if he scored tonight. He’s a joke.

  20. Pathetic.

Im not bashing Renney for no reason, but he’s a moron for not STARTING the 2nd PP unit, when they do a hell of alot more then Jags unit that killed there own PP.

Pathetic loss, its sickening, and now we go against a team that wants there 10th straight. This is ridiculous.

This team is serioulsy the dumbest team in the entire history of the NHL if they actually need Avery to get some wins. I hate that excuse and its a bunch of BS.

  21. Another night with 2 terrible goals against.

You have to marvel at this Rangers group, though. Three straight games with high-school quality goaltending, and you still have to say that the offensive work has been the worst part of their game.

Is there a SINGLE player on this team who could hit the net from 5 feet away? I’m serious. Is there a SINGLE guy who could consistently get a pass and hit the net from 5 feet away? I bet there’s not.

  22. My MSG2 feed was fine. TWC in NYC. Just a stunning game, since the second line did so well, and the forechecking was much better. I think the referee was right in blowing his whistle on the waved-off goal since the puck was underneath Vali. Aside from that, I don’t clearly remember the other Atlanta goals, since I kinda blocked them out of my mind, haha, so I’ll focus on the positives. Staal played a solid game and Mara and Strudwick seemed to work well again. I just fear what would happen if Tyutin or Girardi went down, but Staal would probably be put with the other one.

I think it’s time we stop looking for jagr to play with someone and have jagr just shut his mouth and play the game.

  24. Sam – with regard to what was said above re Rozy what’s the story with his knee. I understand it was really bothering him a few weeks ago and I think still is. what do you see at practices and in the lockerroom.

  25. Doodie – the attached article has that provision talked about re being in compliance for next yrs cap as well as this yrs when Niedermeyer comes back. I did not know this provision existed.

Interesting that if the Rangers sign Henrik in January and make a deadline deal for a guy with huge money left for next yr maybe this could affect us as well – especially if JJ is deemed to make his incentives to renew his contract. I’d guess it wouldn’t affect us though with some of the d men salaries ending this yr.

  30. Not only did this loss put the Rangers into a spiraling web of soul searching and disarray, it put the fans into pandemonium.

  31. im not to worried that the rangers lost there third in a row
last year around the same time the rangers went on a 7 game losing streak and still ended up fine, but i do think that some changes are needed, i dont know if they are players or coaches but a little shakeup wouldnt hurt

    are you fucking kidding me?

  33. This is wayyyyyyyyy worse than anything we’ve seen in the past few years!!!! This team SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Call me out in 4 months. I dare you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. brain surgeons the rangers lost like 7 in a row last yr..

the 3rd goal was weak. 19 games with 2 or less goals scored for the Rangers.. Yeah that 4th line had a another great night, they check =ed some guys, blah blah blah..

hopefully dawes got another hat trick in the minors since Hollwegg and the other brick layers are more valuable to the team!!!!!!!!!!!

Valiquette is at best a 2nd goalie.. rangers at least had many good scoring opportunities….another game which they should have gotten points…

the insanity on this blog is scary….

  35. im not looking forward to seeing Devil fans in the garden tomorrow. they cant even sell out there home games when there on a 9 game winning streak but for some reason they will but on there old RED AND GREEN jerseys and come to the garden. message to devil fans rangers fans are going to be pissed off tomorrow we are going to throw things at u so stay home..

  36. Check out Dellapina’s article this morning to see Malik mouthing off at his benching. Can we ship this guy out of town already? I would be happy with a 4th round draft pick. Prucha was asked to take a seat last year and two years ago Nylander was benched and you didn’t hear them running their mouths in the press. Enough of Malik. Staal is the future of this team and he makes the pairing with Rozival stronger and gives us a real #1 D pair. If Malik can’t function without anyone other than Rozival than what kind of player is he? Send him back to Vancover or Carolina so he can continue to his fantastic plus/minus trend.

  37. I myself have had it with jagr and his buddies, Malik, hossa, straka. I can’t wait the day when they are off the team.

  38. Sorry about that 1:45 am post… a little over-served last night.

The frustration is really kicking in though. I know Renney is a good coach but I’m sooooooo sick of hearing him say “I don’t know… It’s a bit of a headscratcher… well it works for the others on the team why not him?” blah blah blah.

If you don’t know… fine. Don’t tell the media that though. Jeez. At least appear to be able to fix things beyond putting Drury in between Jagr and Straka for the last few minutes of the third or benching Malik. Pretend to have some answers beyond the center swaping panic that any person off the street would do in that position.

The team is playing some horrendous hockey right now…

I feel it’s up to the coach to get them back on track.

Call someone up, bench someone, make ‘em skate till they puke in practice (oh wait… that didn’t work)…

    DO SOMETHING!!!

Here’s an idea… bench Jagr. Why not? I know… we’ll really miss his -7 on the ice right? How can anyone think we’re better without him right?

    Well, let’s see.

Let’s see what happens when and entire 1st line can play “hockey” as opposed to the oh so enjoyable game of “get the puck to Jagr”.

    I dunno… Maybe I’m just frustrated.

    >> You’re both right. I wish everyone would see that. Maybe we don’t need to trade jags. maybe we just need him to get hurt. yeah, i said it.

Its a painful loss for sure. What helped me last night was being at a 50th bday party where I could really hear the tv, and had people walking in front of it all night. At first I was getting pissed. Then I was like – “go ahead” who give a sh-t.

I wanna go find that malik article someone ref. up there somewhere. Screw that doosh.

  40. Here’s the part of the Dellapina article.

MALIK RIPS SCRATCH: For the second time this season, Renney chose to scratch D Marek Malik against the explosive Thrashers. That surprised and upset the veteran defenseman, who had never before been scratched in two-plus seasons as a top-pair defenseman with the Rangers.

“Yeah, I’m surprised I was benched,” Malik said. “But obviously, I was the reason why we lost those two games, I guess. Right now, I don’t have any explanation. Nobody talked to me.

“So you asked me why? Probably because I was the reason we lost those games – because I didn’t help to score some goals, I guess.”

Rookie Marc Staal took Malik’s place as Michal Rozsival’s partner last night, with Paul Mara rounding out the six-man defense corps by returning from missing three games with a sprained shoulder.

Renney did not commit to Malik sitting out tomorrow vs. the Devils. Asked if Malik had lost his status as Rozsival’s partner to the impressive Staal, Renney replied: “I’ll have to watch the game over again and see what I can. I don’t know that we should say that just yet.”

  41. You are all wrong, Jagr & Lundqvist are the guys that make or break this season. Renney’s job 1 is Jagr, anything else is not the priority. Anyone that doesn’t understand that, should stop watching, or at least stop looking any further. There is nothing else to discuss, the rest is all SMALL stuff.

this is from todays daily news. This piece of crap even has the nerve to call out the forwards on the team for not scoring. He really is a great teammate huh? Of all the people to complain after all the garbage. This turd has poluted the ice at msg long enough. It is long past the time to unload him for some used jock straps.

  43. As for the small stuff, Staal does not belong with Rozival. Renney has to get back to the concept, one offensive & one defensive D man to each pair. Rozival can’t and doesn’t cover when Staal goes to offense. Each pair needs a ‘stay at home’ D man, or know how & when to switch and cover for the other. If they both go on offense, they’ll usually get burnt. Otherwise one of the forwards better know to get back.

  44. I thought the Rangers actually outplayed Atlanta for most of the game. Can not believe
how many great chances did not even hit the net. How did Prucha forget how to shoot? As usual of late horrible coverage in front of our net, & no bodies in front of opposition goalie, allowing great saves to be made & no rebound goals. AVERY MAKES our team. PERIOD.We are SOFT again without him.
He’s our best, most important player besides King H. Others need to step up & show his heart & courage.

  45. Ken Avery is a big part of this TEAM’S heart, but read again what I said about Jagr & Lundqvist. Jagr is the problem & the answer to their failure or success.

  46. Doodie Machetto on

bklynblue, you’re absolutely right. He’s the only horse.

Also, you said “Rozival can’t and doesn’t cover when Staal goes to offense,” but I think you’ve got it backwards. Rozsi is supposed to be the offensive D-man. Staal should stay at home, occassionally pinching in. Rozsi scores goals. I mean, when he shoots, like really shoots, he scores.

  47. The team no question misses Avery and all the things he adds. This team is fairly small and mostly finesse oriented up front. I thought they played a fine first period. They controlled the play most of the period. The third line was fantastic driving to the net drawing penalties. Hossa scoring against a team his brother plays for? Shocking! Sadly it was his only good shift. The thing was he wasn’t the worst player on the line last night it was Shanny. Shanny is playing more minutes than he did ten years ago when he was in his prime. He’s on the pp pk and on the second line. They need to manage his minutes better. He looked slower than usual. Let’s not forget he was fading late in the year before his collison with Knuble. The Jagr line had a quiet first but got stronger as the game went on. I thought Dubinsky played a good power type game, he did blow a great scoring chance late. The second period was ugly. It was a turnover show led mostly by Rozsival. The Thrashers had to have 4-5 odd man rushes. The defense was just very lax that period. Valiquette had a very very good period after a shaky first. I thought he made a half dozen great saves mostly with the glove. Valiquette did give up a horrid goal in the third though you can’t get bet short side there. Staal was fine he made a beauty of a pass on Drury’s goal. Rozsival seems to be getting worse and worse. Prucha and Callahan again played their hearts out. You would like to see them get rewarde4d with goals. Next up is the hotest team in the world. I would bet White shuts down Jagr so the Rangers need someone anyone to step up.

  48. bklyblue,

What’s this team gonna do next year (or the year after) without Jags? Is the whole season totally lost already?

As I stated above… I’m frustrated and I know benching him isn’t the answer… but it’s become clear to me (and every team in the NHL) that he’s not that tough to play against anymore. Be it age, or linemates, or the “NEW” NHL. Whatever. He’s only showed up in a few games this entire season!!! In those games the teams he “outplayed” were tired (read Ottawa) or didn’t watch game films of other foes COMPLETELY SHUTTING HIM DOWN.

Like i said… benching Jagr is not the answer but at some point the Rangers will play a game without him… next year, the year after, sometime.

Just thought I’d point that out. (knowing that he’s not the only problem on this squad)

  49. Malik should shut his effin trap or he won’t find his a$$ in the lineup again.

This team pisses me off because I saw plenty of Rangers get run last night by that coward Exelby, Prucha, Hossa and even Shanny and there is no response.

This team is too soft, no umph to their game, nothing. Callahan, Straka, Hossa, Betts, Drury, Gomez, Prucha…there is no banging, there is no size and no speed. the Rangers never get breakways, never get 2 on 1 rushes, never! PLay some frieking hockey and stop playing not to lose!

I’m sorry, I’m not trading Scott Gomez to Washngton for Nylander because Jagr can’t play with anyone else. I let Jagr’s contract expire and let him go or I trade him now.

Start playing hockey Jagr. Do something other than stay on the far boards, back in and get off a wrist shot. I mean can you be any more predictable?

  50. I like how some of you rip Jagr and Hollweg, but say nothing about how horrible Prucha is. This guy does not belong on the team along with Malik. Please don’t tell me Prucha works hard. He has one shift where you notice him again. Drury should be put with Jagr and Strake, he is a better two was player than Dubinsky. Lose Prucha and Malik and get Baranka and Moore or Parenteau up here

  51. I like how some of you rip Jagr and Hollweg, but say nothing about how horrible Prucha is. This guy does not belong on the team along with Malik. Please don’t tell me Prucha works hard. He has one shift where you notice him a game. Drury should be put with Jagr and Straka, he is a better two way player than Dubinsky. Lose Prucha and Malik and get Baranka and Moore or Parenteau up here

  52. Doodie have a HAPPY!. All I was saying whichever D man goes on O, the other needs to stay back with a forward covering. Rozival hasn’t been covering. …RICHE I don’t give much of a damn about next season. If the NYR are to be in the thick of it this season, Jagr & Lundqvist are the keys.

  53. Bklynblue,

I think we’re agreeing actually. Jagr is obviously vital, I never said he wasn’t. However, nobody can argue that he’s been pathetic this year. His lack of production completely shuts down his ENTIRE line (and may have infected the rest of the squad) inlcuding the PP.

My point was… I wonder what happens with WHOEVER on that line when they don’t have to bow down to his ego and play Jagr-ball.

If the key is Jagr (which along with Hank, I do agree with) then it’s looking like we won’t be getting in the door.

I’ve played hockey but don’t pretend to be an expert… if I can figure out that every time anyone gets the puck and Jagr’s on the ice… they immediately look to pass to him then every team in the NHL can.

If I can see that once he has it, he’ll cycle around in the corner until he gives it up to one of his linemates… fully expecting, no DEMADING to get it right back, then making a weak attempt to shrug off any defender(s) and cut to the slot, then every team in the NHL can & has.
